Good for breakfast or a quick lunch
Excellent breakfast in morning. Also a great place to have a quick lunch. They serve local and European food.
Afternoon Tea
A lovely colonial building with traditional decor. We enjoyed an extremely good high tea in stylish surroundings. A great contrast to the rest of The city.
Lidt kedelig high tea
Nice fixed price menu
Decent choice in this cafe / bistro in a recently renovated Strand Hotel. Large room, with high ceiling, full of colonial charm
Poor service and uninspiring food
Booked for High Tea as a treat on the final day of our holiday (our honeymoon). After we were seated it took an hour for the food to be brought, by which time we'd finished drinking the tea. The cakes were not very nice: lacking in flavour. I was disappointed as I'd hoped for something special. The bill included an item we hadn't ordered, so it had to be amended. Service charge was included automatically, but the service was dreadful. I do not recommend this restaurant.
Independence Day Treat
Ironically, we had High Tea on Independence Day - Burma's 72nd - at the elegant and gracious Strand Cafe in the Strand Hotel. There are two choices - you can have Burmese High Tea or English. We chose the former and it duly appeared in a large laquered tiffin carrier lined with fresh banana leaves and contained multiple Burmese treats ending with divine sticky, coconutty sweets in the last tray. It was so fun opening each tray to reveal the surprise inside. The English Tea came on tiered plates, of course, and looked equally delicious. There is a large range of teas to choose from and ours came in a capacious teapot which was regularly refilled with hot water, at our request. The Cafe itself is just beautiful, with traditional Toile de Jouy wallpapaer, opulent upholstery, wicker and dark laquered woodwork. I felt soooo glamourous and rather memshahib, which may have been totally infradig, depending on your point of view! It goes without saying that the staff were gracious and attentive and they make a mean gin and tonic - as you might expect! I loved this and it was a great way to end our visit to Burma.
Excellent service, delicious food and well priced
Excellent service by a young French male waiter was the beginning of our experience for both dinner and breakfast. The 3 course meal for dinner was very well priced and breakfast consisting of truffled artichokes and eggs one of the best I have ever eaten. The atmosphere was enhanced by the beautiful fresh flowers.
Refurbished since my last visit
I used to have the set lunch here every day on my previous visit to Rangoon. The Strand has been refurbished since then and it's looking like its more famous sibling Raffles so I was pleased that the set lunch is still available, still affordable and probably even better than before.
A colonial style cafe in Yangon
Thank you Mr. Than Hlike for introducing the afternoon tea set to us! We enjoyed so the tea set, the value is good with enjoyable food. The cafe is with colonial style which is very relaxing and beautiful.
Lunch
One of the best restaurants in Yangon, nice atmosphere and Tasty food and excellent service... Especially Thet Kyaw Hein, Min Thiha, Ms Khaing Khaing Win and Ms Tin Zar Kyi...
Old world charm and style
I wanted to experience a bit of colonial grandeur in Yangon and had read that The Strand Hotel is well worth visiting. The hotel is full of old world charm and style - the decor is stunning. We really enjoyed having a drink at The Strand Cafe - delicious fresh fruit juices, a salted caramel milkshake and a long black. And we were really surprised to be given some excellent macarons to have with our drinks. A lovely spot to enjoy a look into the past.
Personalised Service and Unique Afternoon Tea e
For my sister's final afternoon in Myanmar, I booked this special venue and we both reflect so positively on it being such a special visit. We have been fortunate to enjoy afternoon tea in some really cool venues both in the UK and abroad, but the Myanmar High Tea is just so unique. The venue harks back to colonial times and irrespective of your views on that era, The Strand has embraced the architecture and design to transport you back to 1901 when the hotel opened. Whilst the 'Classic' (Western) afternoon tea looked amazing, the amazing use of local produce made our choice the right one in our view. The staff are simply exceptional and we were served by William, who was delightful. However, it was Than Htike who really went the extra mile to make this a visit we wouldn't forget. He explained the food in detail and talked about the importance of certain produce in local cuisine. He proudly described the story of The Strand and did everything possible to make it a memorable experience. He is such an asset to The Strand Cafe. I can't wait to take other people during the remainder of my own stay in the country.
Delightful Atmosphere!
The Strand Cafe has a delightful atmosphere resplendent of the British colonial period with charming gentlemen waiters donned in Burmese longyis. For me it was also nostalgic. I had been here before on a previous trip some 30 years ago! The service was immaculate. We had lunch, I was pleased to be able to have gin to which is a Burmese ginger salad, which they were kind enough to prepare off menu. Overall the food was above average, but not particularly special for a place with this pedigree. But this place oozes with style if you like the olde and the grand and not too big!!
Innovative breakfast menu, perfectly executed
Like most people, I approach most breakfast menus expecting little culinary imagination. Eggs benedict, and the usual continental fare, plus a standard Asian selection are the norm. Little did I know, Chef Périé, was ready for me. (A well traveled chef, if there ever was one!) Imagine my surprise, when I spotted not one, but multiple breakfast dishes that I had never seen on a menu before- waffles with ratatouille, cloud eggs, Cardinal eggs- egg, artichokes, truffles, not to mention fried banana spring rolls and more. We had the spring rolls, cloud eggs, and Cardinal eggs. Delightful. The service and location are as you would expect at a grand yet intimate hotel, beautiful and like stepping onto the stage of a play, in which you have been lucky to have been cast in the role of weary traveler. Down to the wooden xylophone being played in the lobby, wafting it's tropical notes throughout. Kudos to the hotel management for encouraging a thoughtful and exciting menu, and to Chef Périé for the thoughtfulness to provide it for these travelers.
Absolutely exquisite cuisine
I am a vegetarian, and this restaurant made the most awesome vegetarian food. A fantastic fusion of Asian spices with French craftwork. Their creations were absolutely unique. Probably the finest Asian fare I have eaten was at this restaurant
It could be perfect, if.
I won't talk about the good things, as they are pretty obvious from the ratings here. It is lovely, classy, high ceilings and great food, whether local or international, good service, very fluent in English. Here is where I had my best mohinga ever, 5 years ago. OK, the first problem is that the mohinga is not on the menu anymore. Second problem is the ridiculous waiting times. Even with only 4 tables with customers, our quick lunch took us just short of 2 hours. One just needs to check here how often the term " slow " occurs on the reviews. And with so much criticism they seem to be ok with that dragging pace. Not cool. Be prepared to waste time waiting. Third is the creditcard machine that only works in US dollars, even when the local currency is kyat and my own currency back home is NOT US$. And finally the 4th problem is the exorbitant prices. No more mohinga, sluggish service, time wasted and not a decent card machine that will charge in local currency, these prices are much more than the real value of a meal here.
nice atmosphere
we loved the great service and the nice meals during our stay. the afternoon tea was fantastic, too. they are very childfriendly as well.
Food
The best foie gras ever, well worth it for the experience in a famous hotel with all the ambience that goes with it.
Beautiful and delicious
Stopped here for high tea as a cool break while exploring downtown yangon. A nice place to write sone post cards and used the free WiFi. I ordered the myanmar high tea, and it was very yummy. Definitely read up in the history of the place! A very cool place
Brilliant Breakfast
We stayed in the hotel and loved the breakfasts here. The staff was very attentive and the food (especially the amazing bread basket) just perfect.
Step back in time
Excellent value for money and impeccable service, although expensive by local standards. We visited mid-week and it was quiet so I'd probably save the visit for a weekend evening.
genteel postcolonial charm
and nice food to boot. i heard afterwards from a friend that the mohinga is exceptional. wish i'd ordered that. i ordered a two course set meal which was okay - not bad, not great. but the reason we went to the strand cafe wasn't for the food. it was for the old world, genteel, elegant interior. and we weren't disappointed. it made for a lovely interlude in a hot sight-seeing and shopping day. if i were going to be a frequent tourist to yangon i'd probably visit the strand cafe each time.
Could Spend All Day In Here
^ And that we did... having spent one of our days in Yangon eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Strand Cafe. Delicious range of both western and Burmese food, at decent prices. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room is so beautifully decorated and seemed very popular for people having high tea too! Definitely worth a visit if in Yangon.
Pleasant coffee house
We were touring n it was a rainy day. Stopped over for Tea in their coffee house. Desserts / Cakes were really unique & awesome. Tea & Hot chocolate was good. Atmosphere put us back to the colonial times. Enjoyed our meal. Lobby was beautiful with lovely decor & flowers. Location is opposite the port but not too far from main sights
good food
Good food and very reasonable proces, most staff except one are very nice and friendly. Beakfast is enjoyable there as well as for coffee or tea
Wonderful food and service - like going back in time
We enjoyed a wonderful lunch and breakfast here with fantastic service and great food. Lunch was excellent and the hotel breakfast served here amazing. Great service really stands out. Highly recommend for staying guests or drop in meal.
Excellent
This morning we went on a walking tour of colonial Yangon. We ended the walk, appropriately, with refreshments at The Strand Café in the Strand Hotel. Inside this Leading Hotel of the World all was tasteful, colonial style elegance. Our tea and refreshments - a coconut and black bean rice pudding served with moist, tasty cakes - were not only excellent but beautifully presented and served. This was a wonderful experience of a bygone age and a total contrast to the hustle and bustle, heat and somewhat dilapidated buildings outside.
Great Breakfast
We had breakfast several times in The Strand Cafe. It was excellent each time and the service was consistently good.
A very nice place but little expensive
Obviously seating there will have a price that is justified by the quality of products and the quality of the service. Waitress and waiter are highly professional and make a great work. If you want to imagine the colonial experience or just spend a really nice time in a nice place, I invite you to take a cup of tea there. You can also have some great food. From westernised local food to more western foods. Great place and great service
Birthday dinner for 1
I was giving myself a solo Birthday treat, i decided to come to the Strand hotel for a meal. I was concerned that i couldn't finished the food. I had ordered samosas, seaweed salad, Chicked briyani and dessert. food were nicely presented. They have western and local menu. I wanted to see how well they did the local food. Tastes just as good and looked more refined. Surprised they served hot bread with butter prior to the meal. My rave for this meal is the dessert (last picture). The English description is " coconut and peanut sphere with pineapple slices and passion fruit sorbet. " It has a local name, I think its Ohn Hway Lone. The sorbet offsets the sweetness of the sphere and also balances the dessert nicely. The pineapple slices are so thin for a reason. When you combine the sorbet, coconut-peanut sphere and pineapple slices, the dessert is raised to a very nice combination altogether. Service was good and staff were attentive.
Such a disappointment
I first stayed at the Strand Hotel in 1986 (when dinner was memorably interrupted by a large rat scuttling across the black and white marble floor of the dining room! I then stayed again in 2000 following a major renovation by the Aman group when it had become very sophisticated again. So, naturally, even though I was not staying this time, I wanted to return to have cocktails in the Sarkies' bar, followed by dinner. The main restaurant only serves French haute cuisine (not what we wanted on a trip to Asia) so we opted for the Strand Cafe instead. It is nicely decorated with stylish red wicker chairs and the service is impeccable as one might expect. However, the food was a real disappointment (even though it was the most expensive menu we'd seen in Myanmar!) The salads we chose were quite nice, but the " curry " of steamed barramundi in banana leaf was awful. Not a 'curry' at all - just steamed fish. Bland and tasteless. Moreover, the entire experience was spoiled by the hotel's total lack of dress code for guests - there were tourists in 'beachwear', wearing large rucksacks on their backs in the restaurant. No style, nothing sophisticated. I won't return for a third visit.
LOVELY PLACE TO ESCAPE THE HEAT
I stumbled across the Strand whilst I was walking around old Colonial Yangon. Although a bit expensive I reckoned that a treat of a high tea would be a good idea. Sadly, the menu choices for the high tea for a vegetarian just didn't work. I had no choice but to just order some vegetable samosas from the main menu. They were very tasty but not quite a 'high tea'. The surroundings were very pleasant & the staff were very attentive without being overly fussy.
Classic and charming cafe
Enjoyed the decor and the Burmese afternoon tea at this charming cafe. Suggest to make a reservation before you go and to spend time slowly to enjoy the food. It is an escape from the busy Yangon streets outside. Unfortunately on the day I visited the cafe, the service was fair only.
Very colonial Cafe to get some drinks
The cafe is very western oriented and has good Wifi. Took a Myanmar beer, some crackers and a Cocktail. Very friendly staff. Recommended for all who have enough dollars left for some drinks.
Wonderful afternoon tea!
I really enjoyed the afternoon tea at this heritage hotel. The service was friendly and professional. The food was delicious. Excellent choice of premium teas, Mariage Freres.
Colonial charm!
Visited with my husband for afternoon tea. We hadn't made a reservation, but were quickly found a table. The staff were very professional, polite and friendly. We both opted for the classic (Western) option which was lovely. There was a selection of tea and coffee varieties included in the price too. The decor and ambience were very relaxing. Would recommend a visit when in Yangon.
Nice ambiance
The entree was delicious, salad with sesame tuna. The second dish the fish had a mud taste but vegetables really good and crunchy. Dessert scones ok but not great. Waitress very nice and smiling.
Old School cool
Went to have dinner here on V Day as the main restaurant was packed. It did not disappoint. Had the foie gras for appetizers and the beef for my main. Both were good although the beef was a bit tougher than I wanted for medium cook. Got whisky from their bar so happy with that. Had sorbet for dessert and it capped off a lovely meal nicely. Ambience is great, mood is relaxed and it was quiet not like other hotel cafés. Price was commensurate with the quality of the place and service. Recommended.
Bistrot gradevole per una cena senza impegno
Scelta obbligata perché il ristorante gourmet è chiuso. Personale gentile, professionale, discreto inglese.
Cheerful and Yummy!
The Strand Cafe has a delightful staff with impeccable service. We stayed four nights at the hotel, and our servers remembered our orders from the day before each time. The fruit and produce was fresh and delicious. The club sandwich was a comforting taste of Home. The spring rolls with spicy mint sauce was a treat. Cappuccino in the morning was perfection as was the Bircher muesli. We look forward to coming back to the cafe and the hotel!
Fabulous - the old city at its best
The Strand was once the place to visit and stay, and the cafe retains the same grandeur of the hotel's storied past. The food was a delight - we had a wonderful dinner, good food, service and ambience. The only downside is the location - adjacent to busy road and the riverfront - not the best part of town!
good service and not so good food
While we stayed at this hotel, we went down to the bar, most illustrious as it was the meeting place of several British Burma's luminaries like Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham etc, and ordered whisky with room temperature soda. The lady came back with a reply that they did not have room temp soda. Hence, I mixed the whisky with cold soda and they provided a snack of peanuts and tofu fry? which was good. Like their rooms, this place was also dimly lit. Not sure, whether the old British hotels and buildings were always dimly lit. Then we moved to the restaurant and ordered veg dishes (very few options) and the food was not that great. Anyway, elegance, opulence, history and old world charms, all in one place! Visit or even better stay at this place, if you have few tons of money for that one time experience!,
Nice break
Had a nice break during our touring to enjoy a drink in this beautiful hotel. The bar was very comfortable. They have a great selection of scotches as well. The hotel is a great example of old colonial England.
High Tea is a speciality
Enjoyed a traditional High Tea here with impeccable service and quality food and drinks. 'lovely traditional surroundings.
High tea - lots of sweets!
I've heard many people talking about The Strand Hotel and its high tea. I came here in a Saturday afternoon and had the The Strand High Tea. It comes enough food for 1 person, one plate of savories and 2 plates of sweets. Personally, I like savories better than sweets, so I would enjoy more of it. The menu said that this set had fois gras and caviar. There was one little bite with fois gras and I could not find or taste the caviar in the dish. Believe me, the best sandwich was the one made with turkey ham! For me, it worth the experience. It is a classy and elegant café, with very well trained crew, they pay attention to each movement that you make. Next time I will try the Myanmar High Tea.
Awesome afternoon tea experience!
Such a nostalgic feeling when stepping into this well decorated colonial hotel. A must visit for the experience when in Yangon! Worthwhile to try the local Myanmar High Tea Set, worth every penny!
High Praise For High Tea
We booked in for afternoon tea at The Strand on the last day of our trip to Myanmar and we we're not disappointed. The hotel has recently been renovated and has a very colonial feel to it and the service there was exceptional. We ordered a Classic High Tea and a more traditional Myanmar High Tea and shared them between us. Tip. We asked in advance about the dress code and we're told that before 6pm it's okay to wear shorts rather than trousers.
Excellent!
The Strand Cafe and Restaurant is always a MUST when in Yangon. The food and the service is excellent! It's a special place that you want to enjoy as long as possible.
We ate breakfast & dinner
Newly redecorated and air conditioned we enjoyed the food and service. On the left on entering the hotel. The Myanmar chicken curry breakfast soup was a stand out treat with its condiments. Our dinner was fun, the Italian chef has a good mix of Italian and French dishes.
A very disappointed place
Even if the building is nice and rather well located this place has no real interest! Quality is poor prices are expensive and it's not a worthy place to go
High tea ! And dinner!
We came here for high tea - and it was very nice. They have two choices classical and maynmar - we had one of each. And both are not disappointing. The dinner menu also caught our eye - highly recommend in coming back for dinner. Great service and food is very tasty, the chef came out to check and see if we had any questions.. They do fine dinning as well, however that has a different price bracket and strict dress code. We really wanted to try however as our last night I didn't even pack any high heels : (
Old world charm with delicious food
We went several times for cocktails to the strand and once for dinner, the old Strand Hotel is beautifully renovated maintaining it's quaint Victorian charm. We always feel like Rudyard Kippling while having cocktails at the bar and the food is always delicious and even improved since my last visit 5 years ago
A good place to try Myanmar food for first timer
Skeptical about mohinga and tea leaf salad and to be proven wrong in this cafe. The fish broth in mohinga is excellent and the tea leaf salad is very tasty. Not cheap but worth a visit if you would like to try the local dish for the first time.
Pricey but worth the feel of heritage
We had a lunch at Strand Cafe in the famous The Strand hotel for the purpose of the heritage atmosphere. While we were highly impressed with the decoration that reflects its long century old heritage history we also live its food particularly the Burmese ribs with rice which is very tasty. However its steak was substandard for both texture and taste at a hefty price tag. Overall it is worth as an experience for a meal of Myanmar heritage feeling.
Good but not excellent
We ordered a table a week before and I was dissapointed to get a small table somewhere in a dark corner. The staff is friendly but they should have more attention for the people in the dark corner.. we had to make lipssounds all the time to get any attention. But the food we got was very good. The steak tartare was fantastic, the creme brulee is large and was made good. Wines nice. Bill was high, but that's normal for such a place and the quality.. so all in all: nice food, friendly staff, but some more attention for details to really become a great restaurant.
Great foods, not so good service
I must say the foods is really good for Myanmar it's expected as the price is western price too. But the service is all over the place, no one assisted us to sit, we decided to walked in and help our self, then a server came to the rescue, they brought wrong bill twice, we thought it was just funny for a hotel this standard. The ambiance of the resto so so.. the foods was the only great things here.
Strand
Really great experience, service could use some training
I would say this is something really everyone should try when they visit Yangon. The Hotel has a really great ambiance and is a great historical remnant of the colonial period when Myanmar was Burma. My fiance and I went there for high-tea, and we were really impressed by the architecture, as well as the food / drinks offered in their set. You can choose between an English or Myanma Set, for $17 per person. Absolutely wonderful petite chicken brioche, lemon tarts, fudge brownies, madeleines, scones, and sorbets / ice creams. REALLY DELICIOUS. It was such a charming and lovely experience to spend the afternoon after a sweaty day shopping and walking around Yangon, chatting in this romantic hotel, sipping tea, eating the snacks, and using the very fast wi-fi. Would recommend for anyone visiting Yangon to take the splurge and give it a try! The only con I can say about this place is, for the price, the service really ought to be much better. We were expecting something more along the lines of Western standards of service but we largely seemed to be ignored. The service doesn't match a 3 star hotel in general in Asia. If you go to many boutique hotels in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos, you will get very excellent service for a fraction of the price we paid at the Strand. As I said, it really is just a small issue and it is the only reason why I have given it a " very good " rating instead of an " excellent " rating.
English high tea at the Strand
We actually had a very good experience at the Strand, unlike some of the other reviewers….. Obviously it is expensive, however the waiter offered one high tea between 2 with extra tea (which they did not charge for!) wand this was more than enough! And made the bill a lot less. It was what one expects, and the tea was excellent.
NY Times.
So so
The ambience is nice, old colonial building and setting and all. However, the food is nothing to write home about. Had afternoon tea there and thought the food was only so so.
High Tea at the Strand: Yummmmm!
US$15.00 for the " Classic " and the " Myanmar " presentations alike, you can't go wrong! The hotel has managed to keep the price fairly reasonable for the value. The appetizers are tasty and there are just the right amount to accompany your servings of tea or coffee. Get there fairly early and plan to have a leisurely stay because motor vehicle traffic in the area can border on the ridiculous (the Strand is across the street from the river with its associated trade going on's.) I hadn't been there for several years, so it was good to be back and to see that quality and the Strand's historically good reputation hasn't gone down hill.
Old-world elegance; very good food
We went to the Strand for tea and liked it so much we went back for dinner. Its old-world colonial charm remains, and the food is excellent. We had the set menu, which was $55 for 5 courses and though expensive by Yangon standards it was good value for the quality of the food and setting. The crab cakes were outstanding!
Dreadful
Easily the worst food and service I've had in three weeks in Myanmar. First I was put behind a pillar and forgotten about so had to look for someone to take my order. Then the person who took the order was sullen and unsmiling (unheard of here). The noodle soup dish was claggy and cloying and the whole meal was overpriced. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
Definite feel of the bygone era
Not a lavish place, but if you like to pretend it is 1930, you will not have to struggle too much to be transported. Food is very good, not exceptional. If you like gin and tonic, know that tonic is hard to find in all of Myanmar. Gin and Sprite work.
A lovely experience
We came here to finish our holiday in Myanmar and it was a perfect ending! US$15 for a grand, luxuriant experience. We moved on to a bottle of wine and then adjourned to the bar after looking through the lovely souvineer shop. We were a group of 6 from different backgrounds and counties - each one of us rated this amongst the top highlights of an amazing holiday!
High Tea and coffee Tea in this old building
You feel time did stop going forward Around 50 years ago.... You sit and wonder about the British officer's that frequently enjoyed breakfast or coffee years ago This month It's special month 10 Dollars per person for high tea from 2.30 pm to 5 pm Treat your self and you family freind or your sweet heart for nice hight tea. However something in the air in this cafe.... Could be the Ghosts of the. Past... The spirits wonder around this hotel. and defently in this cafe......
High tea at the Strand was a joke
The hotel has just been renovated and lost all its colonial charm, and is now just a modernish hotel. Anyway, went for the famous high tea, and it was a joke. An unhelpful waitress ignored us then said they were full (which they weren't) until I pointed out that I had booked. Then she reluctantly took us to a table where we waited for an hour for the first two of our group of six to get their cake trays. Then a couple more were brought out. Then finally one more. By then the tea was cold. Waitress then chased us out of the restaurant claiming we hadn't paid (when we had.) No apologies, no smiles, charmless and inept. The tea itself wasn't at all bad, but the staff and management are clueless. Avoid!
Last minute indulgence
We were aware of the amazing reviews, however our busy schedule and timing to indulge in a high tea was next to impossible. Not to stop us, we walked 1.5 hrs in the mid-day heat to The Strand to spend our last kyats. The atmosphere and Colonial buildings along the way added to our experience. We were at first uncertain to enter due to now hot and slightly untidy appearance, however were beautifully greeted and quickly seated with great views. We appreciated the detailed decor and freshly starched & stiff serviettes, silverware and fresh roses. We ordered tea, juices, desserts and a cocktail. Surprised by our order, with no main meal, a giggle and smile was soon shared with our story. A generous pot of tea arrived, all beautiful however I was surprised to find tea bags. The juice was also very delicious and both deserts were amazing. The cocktail did not arrive before we had to leave however this was of no upset to ourselves. A quick visit to the impressive ladies room to freshen up for the second time signed off our " bucket list " of must visits, as it is always very nice to have such beautiful luxury experience.
Poor service
High tea was not as expected service very poot the pride of the waiters is legendary, best to skip this place don
Classy Dining Ambience
We ate lunch at the Strand Cafe and then returned at a later date for conversation in the Bar. The photos on the wall capture interesting snippets of life and scenery in Burma in the early heyday of the Strand. The renovation has kept the classy ambiance of the original hotel. Our food was really delicious in the Cafe. Service was top rate. The bar didn't have some of the drinks my friends ordered, but everyone ended up getting something they liked.
Disappointing
Having been told that the Strand Hotel was the best in Yangon, and in the same group as Raffles in Singapore, we were somewhat disappointed. The decor was lovely, but the food was average, not very hot, and though they had been told in advance that one of us is gluten-free, they seemed very confused about gluten-free food, and kept trying to serve food that was unacceptable. On our table of four people several incorrect dishes were served. This was our first day in Myanmar - hope things improve.
Disappointing
I was disappointed when I was unable to secure a reservation at the Strand and had to stay elsewhere. That said, I looked forward to at least going to the Strand for a meal and a drink in the bar. I was let down. The lobby is drab, furniture is second-rate. It reminded me of how the old E & O Hotel in Penang looked prior to its renovation - truly! I don't consider it to be worthy of a 5 star rating. The restaurant was deserted and appeared unappealing. No one appeared to ask if I wanted a table, and only two people were there eating at 7:00 PM. The shops on the lobby level were okay, but the same things could be found in Scotts Market. There is an ATM on the premises. I left the Strand feeling that it truly could do with a careful make-over.
charmless
We were staying elsewhere but came here for coffee / cold drinks and nibbles and to see what all the fuss was about. Yes the wicker chairs are comfortable and its a nice relief from the heat and noise of the street. However staff were indifferent, some items we wanted were not available - fresh juice. I thought they may have gone to the market to buy the fruit the waiter took so long to return. Our plates / glasses were not cleared the entire time, when it was clear we were finished. We were both reading books so must have stayed for 1.5hrs. Whether the staff see the ++ from the bill who knows, in this instance it was not deserved.
Average Afternoon Tea and lunch - nice historical hotel
On a recent visit to Yangon we had two dining experiences at the famous Strand. Yangon is not a city known for fine dining so this is probably as best as you will get and it's just average. Loved the building itself and service was good. Food was only mediocre, nothing to rave about. We tried the tea one day, I ordered one style (English / Burmese) and my friend the other. Presentation was good and to tell you the truth the tea was noticeably better than the lunch. However I still don't know how it made the list for the Worlds Best High Teas!
Lovely
This is a grand old hotel from years go by. No, we selected not to stay here, but my husband and I did have dinner one night. The dinning room is grand, the food of the old fashion era, ie. lobster thermodor, fish cakes etc. It really was delicious. The service was excellent, but apart from three other people, we were the only ones there and this was a Fri night. There was a classical guitarist playing and I have to say, he was fantastic. If it wasn't for him, I would have to say, it would have been very quite with so few people. Over all, a lovely experience.
Lovely, but left with a sour taste
We popped in here right after they reopened. I'm an artist and my husband is an architect, so we were quite curious. It was beautiful. The snacks and tea and wine we had were lovely. But, the man who seemed to be the maitre d was rather snobbish and condescending, especially to our dear Burmese friend who accompanied us.
Great place to experience history
I'm addicted to British Colonial history. Of all the 4 major hotels in Asia tied to this period of Britain (the Raffles, the E & O, and the Peninsula), the Strand is the most affordable. I stayed and dined in the hotel. The high tea is the same as what you'd get in all the other 3 hotels, except it's cheaper here. So are the hotel rooms.
A place to recall Rangoon!
It " s a right place to have drink and recall about the Rangoon ! Good place for meeting someone with your business and quiet cozy as well as high end services. Highly recommend !
Incredible, excellent food in a classy setting. Worth the splurge!

Watch your dollars!
Dropped in there on the first morning in Yangon for decent coffee and Danish and left $30 US lighter! Coffee was good, but not that good. Great place with lots of history near the waterfront and full of colonial grandeur and a decent loo (hard to find on a walk round the city!). There was the usual Myanmar problem not accepting some of our dollars as they were not brand new. See my blog entry " wonga worries " at gill35. blogspot.com for a solution to this.... Having sorted our dollar situation during the rest of our time in Myanmar, we returned here for afternoon tea. In contrast to the coffee and Danish, this was amazing value and a great, if calorific, way to spend an afternoon. Recommended. They also have free wifi, like everywhere else in Burma, not that good, but whilst you can't seem to get hotmail, twitter and facebook connect easily.
Prachtig gerestaureerd
High Tea - great treat and value
If it's 2PM and you are near the Strand, do not miss High Tea. We ordered both traditional / English and asian / Burmese. It was perfect! At US$15 it was a bargain too! Service is not terrific so go when you are not rushed. Check out the art gallery on the first floor.
Slightly gloomy imperial splendour
The Strand has all the plusses - history, location [on Strand Road by the harbour and the river, next to the magnificent British Embassy building], tradition. But it charges highish prices for food that is good, but not outstanding. Service was a little slow, and not always attentive - a distinct step down from the better-value Traders Hotel.
Great hotel but the Strand Restaurant was not a very good standard
We stayed at the Strand Hotel which is in a great position. It has enormous rooms excellent butler service and friendly staff. Unfortunately the Strand Grill was a big let down.
Despite the grand colonial atmosphere its not grand
The Strand Cafe is on the ground floor of the historic Strand Hotel in central Yangon (Rangoon). It has fabulous high ceilings and is decorated in a British colonial manner. What must have been a very pleasant place to sit in a bygone era across the road from the port. Now its only metres from a very busy road with trucks lumbering by constantly. The service is slow even by Burmese standards. The food is at best average and the prices incredibly high for what it is and in Yangon. The saving grace dish is the selection of 3 Burmese salads. Almost worth puting up with all the other problems
Snob myanmar?? Possibly there!
Really, I love myanmar people! Always so smily and welcoming and kind... So Is hard to accept that " snobbish " would be the word to describe that staff of this restaurant. I have been there a few times and some of them I had a smile or another but generally they are so " robotic " and borderline rude. I was just there a few days ago and again the same uncomfortable feeling. What happens?? How can a GM, Manager not see that their staff don't greed the guest properly. It took 25min for the bill to come and handed over to me with not a :thank you, here you are, a smily, sorry to keep you waiting... nothing! During order taking (4pax) we had our orders repeated to us but no one got eye contact with the waitress. So really weird. Yet, the food is nice and the restaurant takes you back in time, almost. I just wish the management would take a look at what goes on because they have so much potential.
High Tea
My husband and I ended our 6-hour walking tour with Yangon Walking Tours at the Strand Hotel. The last part of our tour included the highlights of the Strand. The hotel was so cool and inviting that we decided to stay and enjoy high tea before heading back to our own hotel. While we have had better high tea in places like London, we had nothing to complain about the tea service at the Strand. The food was good and what you'd expect to see at any other tea service. There were little sandwiches, scones and pastries, and a nice selection of tea. The service was good and unobtrusive. The price, while high for Myanmar, was less expensive than in first world cities. High tea at the Strand was a nice way to relax on a hot afternoon after a day of sightseeing in Yangon.
Lovely afternoon tea
Dropped in for high tea on a rainy Yangon afternoon. Since I had had a large lunch, I opted out of the high tea and went for just tea and scones. The restaurant is beautiful. Very old world colonial with lovely whicker chairs. The scones and tea were great. The staff were delightful and very attentive. One of the waiters brought me a very crisp international newspaper to read, as well as the logon details for the wifi, for me to sit and relax. A truly 5 star setup, that I recommend highly. Hight tea i think was $17US which was very reasonable, as I saw them bring out the goods to other tables. My tea and scones came in at around $10US which I thought was great value. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon after day of sight seeing, when the heavens open.
No lunch!
I've been to most places to eat or drink in Yangon but not here, so I was looking forward to having lunch in the place that Rudyward Kipling had stayed. I arrived at 11.30 am but the lady at the door did not want to let me in and suggested several times I should go to the bar as lunch was not being served for another half an hour. The cafe restaurant had about 10 tables where people where having coffee. So I asked could I have coffee as I waited for lunch. Reluctantly she let me in. Note I am appropriately dressed with shoulders and knees covered. the coffee arrived- 5$. I noted how other tables were given biscuits with their coffee but not me. 5 fellow travellers arrived to sit beside me and they too, got no biscuits and commented on being ignored. I could hear them commenting on it. Over the course of 70 minutes, waiters and waitresses walked past me more than 40 times before I stopped counting. Not one met my eye. not one came and asked did I want anything else, the lady who knew I had wanted lunch walked by several times. I decided to leave but I wanted to give some customer service feedback. I asked to speak to the manager having written on my bill that included service charge that it was not appropriate as the service was bad. The manager listened and apologised for the inconvenience. He said they were very busy. 80% of the tables were empty, so I wouldn't like to see what would happen if they were busy. I declined his offer of free lunch. I'm sad that I didn't get the chance to have a lunch there, but I know I don't want to go back. The lobby is very pretty and the shops have beautiful and expensive things so that at least is worth a visit.
Afternoon Tea
If you want to experience a colonial feel in Yangon you can't miss English afternoon tea at The Strand hotel (from 2;30pm). Step in from the heat and dust and dirt and you are in a different world. The sandwiches and pastries were at least as good as the ones in UK and the room is just lovely. Do visit the amazing art gallery on your way out and if you don't want to spend 1000's of dollars buy the gorgeous drink coaster instead.
High tea at the Strand was wonderful!
As Yangon continues to become busier and the streets more choked, the Strand truly stands out as an oasis. We came here on our last day of a two-week trip through Myanmar. After fighting through the traffic, climbing out of our car and into the lobby of the hotel, we all felt an enormous sense of relief! My kids were thrilled with the free and FAST internet (compared to everywhere else in Myanmar) and my husband appreciated an ice-cold beer served efficiently in their clubby bar. We then moved to the cafe for the $17 high tea. After 14 days of eating mostly friend rices and noodles, curries and tea leaf salads, grilled fish, etc, we were all quite happy to fill up on the delicious tea sandwiches, scones and other sweets. They also make a fine club sandwich. We enjoyed ourselves and thought the atmosphere and service were first-rate. Would recommend.
A perfect retreat
We visited twice on our recent trip to Myanmar. The first, at the start of our holidays after a long and hot wander around the colonial parts of the city and on our final day as a celebration of a great trip. Both times the staff were fabulous - helpful, discrete and professional. We sampled the dessert menu first time round - absolutely gorgeous citrus soufflé and a deconstructed lemon tart - and for dinner we had chicken and fried rice. All were beautifully presented. The Stand works well in Yangon, but it would work equally well in Sydney, Bangkok or London. It's a great place for a treat.
Average at best
Expected so much more from this hotel and restaurant, Hotel very small and not renovated to the former glory that it could and should be. We had high tea in the lounge which is served between 2-30 & 4-30pm in the afternoon. Food good if a little pricey but service and atmosphere.
Just for the experience
We came here just to enjoy some " safe " food after having upset stomach eating at several street venders. It certainly is a nice little cafe. Staff members were super attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the free WiFi service for sure. We ordered the Burmese cuisine, both of our appetizers and entrees. The appetizers tasted way better than the entrees, although still not as good as the street venders. But knowing our stomachs are gonna be happy was a big plus. I would come here again for the service but not the food (well, maybe a drink) !
