The perfect place in Mauritius!

This property has to be the best place I have ever stepped foot in, let alone stayed in! The whole grounds were gorgeous and unique in decor and characteristics. But what made our stay so special was the staff - they were above and beyond in every aspect - a true 5*+ experience - there was nothing too much to ask. We had the luxury pool villa was enhanced our stay and the privacy made it so special. Thank you Oberoi team!

Pastry by Ruben

Ruben was amazing in making the best pastry. We really enjoyed the various cakes he made. He was really professional and asked for feedback to each table. We highly recommend visiting his restaurant. Well done!

You won't regret your stay at The Oberoi

We stayed at the Oberoi at the beginning of December as part of our honeymoon. From the moment we booked, we knew that our stay would be special. Nishi contacted us to make arrangements and was helpful in organising transfers, activities and reservations at the restaurants. On arrival we were greeted by Natasha and Nishi who were both very welcoming. There was a slight issue with our transfer from the airport to the hotel (no fault of the hotel) and the hotel dealt with the situation well. They upgraded our room to a garden room (which was a pleasant surprise) and allowed us to use the chauffeur service for one day - both incentives added to our stay being extra special. The room itself was spacious and had all required amenities. The sunken bath being the highlight. Housekeeping was of a good quality and we particularly enjoyed returning from dinner to see that they had organised a rose petal bath for us. All meals were of a high quality. We ate once at On The Rocks, and wish we had the opportunity to eat more often there. A special thank you to Mevin for making a special drink for us and Shaan for ensuring that we were looked after. Prashant at the Main Restaurant was always welcoming and accommodating. Highly recommend dining at The Gunpowder Room, it was quite an experience and the portion sizes are huge! My only feedback would be that all of the dining options (except for The Gunpowder Room) are outdoor, and whilst I understand the appeal of al fresco dining when you have such wonderful views, I personally would welcome the opportunity to dine indoors and get some respite from the heat. This is more of a personal preference rather than a criticism. We were fortunate to take part in a number of activities being offered by the hotel, and again only wish that we could have stayed longer to enjoy more of them. The painting class was relaxing and we were left with a souvenir to take home. We both enjoyed interacting with the magician and illusionist on one of the evenings. I can't write this review without giving a huge thanks to Henrio. We attended a yoga and tai chi class run by him and both left feeling highly relaxed. I would also like to mention Rachna at the spa front desk who was always cheerful and helpful. We enjoyed the signature Oberoi massage and both therapists were really good. The resort itself is sophisticated, and you often feel like you are the only ones there. Highly recommended!

Outstanding service on every level

The thing that stood out more than anything else at this hotel was the service. Right from our arrival until our departure and drop-off at the airport we received the most outstanding service from every level of staff. This was our first stay at this hotel group and we were wowed on every level. The people are what makes an organisation - and in this case - what makes a stay at a hotel / resort memorable. The Oberoi Group knows how to select their staff- who in turn provide outstanding service to their guests. Everything was possible. The great leadership at this hotel is evident in every department. Special mention of staff: Guest relations, reception and restaurant - Ayushi, Leila, Dorian, Danav, Gabi, Harry, Krisna, Rabin, Jay, Aum, Amanda, Amrish, Mervin, Avinash, Yoshna, Luv, Anoop, Akshay, Chris, Ruby, Kaleem, Ritesh, Vinay, Piritam, Jason. Housekeeping - Kushal, Razia, Preetish, Vinod, Ashvin. Watersports - Brian, Silvestre and Danny. Chefs- Igor, Singh Gunsham, Daman, Brandon, Jash Managers - Smita Dey, Prakash, Sonah, Rossan The Resort - it is situated in a beautiful location amongst the ruins. The flora is lush and abundant - beautiful, huge trees strewn all over the resort. I loved the frangipanis growing all over. That is my favourite island accessory. The rooms are well proportion with lots of privacy in the villas. The decor blends in perfectly with the location. The entire establishment exudes refinement, privacy, luxury, comfort, and world class service Our Villa -We were upgraded to a 2 bedroom pool villa. The second bedroom was housed in a separate building which we did not have access to. But we had access the rest of the 600 square meters of the exclusive villa property. There is a private pool, 2 dining areas, a pavilion with a hammock. - simply stunning. The room is decorated in beautiful neutral toned fabrics. Mineral water and fruit are replenished daily. The bathroom has a sunken bath and the most luxurious toiletries. There is a sitting area and a walk in storage / luggage room with a safe. There are two types of gowns per person and special woven slippers. We had a look at the Royal Villa - it is simply spectacular. The main restaurant - breakfast is served here. A few items -fresh fruit, pastries, breads, yogurts, dried fruit and nuts, cold meats and cheeses, some salad items - are served on the buffet. The rest of the scrumptious menu is a la carte. The best part is that you can request a degustation menu of your favourites. The cherry on the top is the breakfast dessert menu - simply decadent.. Between my husband and I we sampled almost all the dishes on the breakfast menu. Everything was delicious but the Mauritian and Indian dishes were outstanding We also loved the local Mauritian drink called Alooda - a milk based drink with basil seeds and also served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream if you are up for it. Dinner - can be had at the main restaurant, the Gun Powder Room and On The Rocks. I will mention just the special dinners. We did Omakaze in the Gun Powder Room, which is served only on a Tues and Thurs. It is a Japanese inspired meal. Chef Brandon prepared the meal - the most exquisite pieces of sushi for our starters- 12 pieces with 6 different dipping sauces, The main consisted of - a bowl of the most delicious clam miso, veg tempura, lobster and a piece of wagyu beef fillet. This was surf and turf on another level. Dessert was green tea panacotta. My husband had arranged a special dinner on the beach for our last night. Unfortunately, the rain came down so heavily that it damaged the set up. But we still had the most fabulous menu that was crafted by Chef Singh Gunsham. Starters - I had prawn kataiffi and my husband had prawns wrapped in taro. Mains - seafood platter consisting of linefish, scallops, prawns and calamari. Sorbet - the most refreshing flavours of curry leaf, tamarind and mango. Dessert - chocolate decadence We also had a chocolate mousse cake for my husband's birthday celebrations- more chocolate decadence. The Spa - tranquil, relaxing space. We had a 60 min massage each It was perfectly executed by our therapists. There is a fitness center and yoga suite with daily activities. Daily activities- various complimentary activities are arranged for the guests. I attended the henna session, the Hindu temple visit and the star gazing activity. The lady doing the henna is very skilled in what she does. The star gazing was an absolute treat with the knowledgeable Mr Basker. The priest at the temple took us around and explained what was on site and also did a specia prayer for all of us. Water sports - if you love the water, there is a lot to do. The staff at the center are helpful and friendly. Beach - carry your water shoes if you have tender feet. Lots of sea life around. We missed the dolphins who showed up in the bay on one morning. Fruit is served on the beach and at the pools around 12:00 every day and on the weekends you get ice-cream around 14:30. Complimentary mineral water is available at the beach and pools. Gifts - Thank you for the fabulous candle and to Smita for the book, Dare To Dream -. MS Oberoi's vision of service surpasses all expectations. Thank you to everyone at the Oberoi Mauritius for a most memorable stay. Your hospitality, professionalism and service goes beyond excellence. You have each touched our hearts and enriched our lives. Until our next visit......

A touch of an authentic experience

From a hotelier background, touring Mauritius's 5stars resorts is to be able to experience all the unique services the resorts give and differentiate them from another. The Oberoi resort is located in Balaclava, north of Mauritius. The resort is located by the beach and is located a bit further away from the main nightlife street of Grand Baie (20-30min by car) and capital city of Port Luis (20-30min by car). It would not be convenient if you don't have a car as pubic transport in Mauritius is quite a hassle and complicated if you do not speak the language. Hotel limousine and taxis are around the corner but that is only if you are willing to pay more money. Our visit to Oberoi Resort was welcomed by a security check at the gate, security was quite happy to report arrival of walk in " outsiders " wanting for a drink at the bar to the in house team. After a confirmation, the security pointed where the parking and reception is. The property is quite big and maze-like. We got lost looking for the reception when we first arrived but a friendly butler who was passing by guided us in the right direction and called upon a colleague at reception to assist us. The Bar was right beside the beach so it is definitely possible to watch the sunset from here. The bartender was very friendly and attentive, he explained the bar menu and gave good beverages recommendations. There was a happy hour of buy 2 get the third drink free (per person) and had many types of different drinks with good prices. A Phoenix beer would cost Rs230, you would also have various type of hard liquors, cocktails and wines. The classic Pina Colada cocktail was bit strong but the coconut touch was refreshing. The Godfather cocktail consisting whiskey (Chivas Regal 12y) and amaretto was good and quite sweet. The snack menu doesn't have many varieties of food so we ordered a tapas to snack on and presentation of the tapas was nice. Although the spring roll, shrimps, meatballs and feta cheese was satisfying. But the taste of the chorizo (mixed with balsamic vinegar), parma ham were not really nice. The price for the tapas was quite expensive as well about Rs900ish, perhaps it might have been better to try the Mauritian platter (chili cake, Taro cake, samosa). Overall experience from a visitor was good, service was expected from the Oberoi international hotel chain and prices was quite normal for a resortHopefully next time we will have the opportunity to review this property from an in-house guest's perspective (rooms & facilities). Thank you to the team at Oberoi Mauritius for giving us a good short experience :)

Excellent lunch meal

I was at Oberoi Mauritius for a lunch and would like to share the exceptional experience i have had. Welcome by Jenny and Lorenzo made us feel like we are valued, lunch service by Mervin and co was perfect. Food had lots of creativity. I ate more with the eyes as they reflected the research and chef d'oeuvre of the chef. A special thanks to Sonah the food and beverage manager for his humbleness. If possible, we would like to revisit Oberoi and spend a week-end in this prestigious hotel

Where do we go from here

What an amazing place, we have stayed at the best of the best, not to mention any names, but Dhiren and his team (everyone was amazing, but to mention a few, Natasha, Daman, bahbo) great service, great food, great resort, we checked out 4 other resorts and they do not compare hence, where do we go from here?

Maravilloso

What an amazing Experience! Definitely a family AND a couples proprerty

THE NEGATIVE . The hotel does not offer a fully inclusive pricing which is something that would make it more attractive to the South African and International Markets. . The extras, even though quoted in Rupees are still crazy… You're looking at MUR 1 750 for a bottle of Boschendal La Bouquet white wine. A Phoenix beer would knock you back MUR 200… . There aren't enough photographs on your website showing the layout and setup of your different room types. . The hotel is quite close to Port Louis in an area called Baklava. Thus, as it was over a long weekend, you could see the tankers and container ships queuing up across the bay for the harbour… THE POSITIVE . We had to go to Port Louis first so I could apply for my spousal visa / residence permit before carrying on to the Oberoi. My kids just couldn't wait to get to the " fancy " hotel and kept on asking me when we are going… . Upon arrival, Natasha, the duty manager on Friday, met myself and my family. The concierge met me at my car and took my luggage straight to the room. . Amanda, the relationships lady, took us through what the hotel had to offer, overlooking a manmade waterfall with a dam below and an amazing view!!! We were offered homemade lemonade which was DELICIOUS!! . We were then taken to our rooms. WOW!!! The rooms were absolutely AMAZING!! We had two Pavilion rooms (the lowest room type) that were connected with a passage. . Attention to detail was FANTASTIC. The children's room had three sets of bath robes and slippers for the children. Each child also got a really cool bag with an activity book and pencils - why is this only for children??? . The amenities in the rooms were amazing - when last did you stay in a hotel where they actually had shampoo and conditioner in two separate containers? Even a loafer for those that like them and a foot brush. The only thing that was missing was bubble bath for the sunken bath big enough for an entire family of five - we tested it… . There is a swimming pool for adults and children as well as a separate swimming pool where children are normally not permitted - this is particularly for those guests that don't like having splashing and screaming kids around. . The meals were amazing. We went to dinner at the same restaurant two nights in a row. The menu was different on both nights and was absolutely incredible. A great spot for " foodies " who like the experimental chef who enjoys exposing his clientele to a combination of the strangest and delicious tastes one has to offer. The kids Spaghetti Bolognaise was amazing and definitely something I'd like the recipe for. The burgers are a bit on the dry side though and a bit more 'experimentation " is recommended here. The home-made iced teas are also delicious. . We requested that breakfast be served in our room the Saturday morning… Oh my! We'd requested cereal, fresh fruit and pastries… There enough to feed an army! The hot chocolate was exceptional! . Bottled water is free and you can pretty much drink as much as you can. . It's a good idea to advise your clients that if they want to experience the Rock Pool (I think) restaurant, which is not as formal, they need to book the night before. . The kiddies club was also fantastic. Nothing is too much for the staff and the personal touch makes one feel really special and appreciated. They did things like feeding the ducks (there is a couple of Egyptian Geese at the main restaurant) and fish in the " pond ", make your own bracelet, face painting etc. One of the kiddies club ladies, Anna, accompanied Danielle on the " banana " which is a tube dragged behind a speedboat. Needless to say, Danielle didn't enjoy it too much and Didier took her spot half way through - of course, the skipper thought it was free for all and Didier had an absolute blast! . They have free DVD's for kids to choose from. It's the latest movies and my kids loved it. . On the day we arrived, Danielle cut her toe open (nothing serious) on one of the slates at the bottom of the swimming pool. I took her to reception with the twins in toe to see if they had a first aid kit handy. Once I cleaned up the wound, I could see that it really wasn't too serious. So, a bit of antiseptic cream (I really must get a first aid kit in my car…) and a plaster, all was good again. However, Natasha, the duty manager, rewarded Danielle for her bravery with a box of chocolates… The maintenance guy came to see me later on to try and establish exactly where Danielle had cut her toe so he could fix it immediately and avoid further injuries. . The property is perfect for both couples and families.

Kjempeflott, men ingen strand

Zimmer: Sehr geschmackvolle Villen in Naturtönen eingerichtet.

Simply one word for this hotel: Excellent

The location and the setting, the architecture, the service quality and the staff are simply excellent. The hotel offers programs for all members of the family. The Oberoi Mauritius is an experience not to be missed. The magnificent sunset can be watched from the hotel.

Paradis (ou presque)

Lieu exceptionnel. Service impeccable. Spa splendide.

Bediening is eersteklas.

just on the top

Da Beef tenderloin aus Australien: Out of this world!

Fazit: Das Oberoi gehört unserer Ansicht nach definitiv zu den " Leading Hotels of the World " !

Amazing... amazing... amazing

Totally blown away with The Oberio... what to say that others haven't said - well that's not a lot, so let me list all the amazing things about this hotel: - The staff : Amazing service and always with a smile, where nothing is too much trouble - The accommodation : Beautiful rooms, sunken bath big enough for 2, spotlessly clean, fresh milk and espresso coffee, 4 poster bed, fluffy towels, pavilion for private dining (stayed in garden villa) - The food : 5 star all the way and again i requested some prawns which were not on the menu that night and this was no trouble (steak, fish, lamb, seafood and vegetarian menu are some off the choice and much much more) - Facilities : Unusual pools, which made our trip even more special as this was not the bog standard 'normal' pools. Beach immaculate with fresh fruit, water and iced drinks and beach boys to make sure you are extremely comfortable. - The Spa : We used the spa on several occasions and enjoyed 2 couple massages in the amazing outdoor suite.... all I can say one of the best massages I have ever had and have never been so relaxed - Housekeeping : Polite, helpful and left our room and garden so spotlessly clean we could have eaten dinner on the floor! - Gardens : Beautifully kept gardens, we even were lucky enough to have some coconuts cut by the gardeners to allow us to drink fresh coconut water (there is no member of staff who will not go over and above to make your stay wonderful) I had a bet with my husband that I could find fault with the hotel, food or staff and I promise I fought to win this bet.... but I have to say I lost... there is nothing negative I can say about this hotel. It genuinely is the best hotel I have ever visited with genuinely wonderful and welcoming staff. I never return to the same hotels (always like to look for something new), but for the first time I cannot wait for our return- even requested in the hotel comment card they create a loyalty card - that's how good it was! If you are in doubt don't be this hotel will not disappoint even the fussiest of travellers!

Intimate Luxury - they make you feel like royalty

We were totally relaxed as soon as the taxi dropped us off at the gate, and I'm not the kind of person who relaxes quickly. Every member of staff drops what they are doing to smile and greet throughout your stay. The staff are very relaxed, warm and welcoming, which makes you feel like you have been there for years. The entire hotel feels like a private Bali. We had a luxury pavillion, which was amazing! Sunken bath, open air shower, a frangipani garden, a huge bed with perfect pillows, a light and breezy sitting area and lovely views really made us want to stay indefinately. The food in both restaurants was delicious (especially the aloo breakfasts). The pools are interesting and have fires burning in the evenings for romantic dinners. There is a continuous supply of iced water and fresh fruit during the day, and lovely beaches. The complimentary " Touching Senses " activities really add to your stay with sculpture classes, star gazing, painting, hindu ceremonies and a variety of other enrichment outings. There is also a great spa, gym and steam room which can be used at leasure. The quality of everything was the best possible. This really is the best hotel in Mauritius.

Absolutely Wonderful

We stayed in the Oberoi Mauritius last June and I'm ashamed to only be posting the review now, such was the fantastic nature of our stay. Indeed we've just booked a stay at their hotels in Bali and Lombok because nowhere else comes close to mirroring their levels of service. We had a room with a sea view, although this was not requested, and it was a great addition to our stay - I'd certainly recommend this for the small premium it commands. Even the smallest rooms are of generous proportions with a small seating area, patio and beautiful bathroom with sunken bath and indoor / outdoor shower. The housekeeping staff went beyond the call of duty and the different towel animals (see pictures) that appear in your room nearly every day are a fantastic touch, indeed the days when these did not appear were a slight disappointment! The service throughout our stay was exemplary, nothing was too much for the staff. On one occasion we remarked how good the strawberry spice mojitos were in the bar so the staff arranged our own lesson to teach us how to make them! There are a vast number of programmed activities which are very relaxed and fit in well with your stay, the vast majority of these were complimentary at the time of our stay (though looking at the Bali and Lombok Hotels there is now a charge at those locations) and ranged from cooking lessons, morning jogs, painting classes, trips to a Hindu Temple to henna painting, nature walks and star gazing. I'd recommend all of these. There can be no complaint about the location of the Oberoi Mauritius, indeed I get somewhat frustrated with travellers who complain a hotel is isolated as though they have no access to maps, travel guides or indeed this website. The hotel is slightly remote but within easy reach by car of all notable areas, much of the joy of the hotel is founded in the fact it is in a largely unspoilt area away from the busy capital city. The grounds of the hotel area maintained to an exemplary standard and are a joy to wander around. In terms of dining things can get expensive, if possible I would immediately opt for half board (we did so at the start of our second week) as eating outside the hotel is a challenge due to its location and doing so without half board becomes rather expensive. To put this in perspective, although we may not be the norm, we ate all but one of our meals in the hotel (a lunch out during a long drive) and the cost of food and drink during the stay, despite switching to half board midway through, was nearly as great as the hotel stay itself. This isn't a complaint but it is a word of warning that costs can mount up. Breakfast is more than ample and often a large meal then meant only a small lunch was required. We had three spa treatments between us during the stay and again these were without fault - the service was excellent and the indoor / outdoor rooms a real charm. All in all I cannot recommend the Oberoi Mauritius highly enough, the only regret we had was that the shift patterns meant we didn't get to thank many of the exceptional staff in person as they were not working at the end of our two week stay.

L'EXCELLENCE à un nom: THE OBEROÏ MAURITIUS

Welcome to Paradise

We are just coming back from one week at The Oberoi in Mauritius and had a wonderful time in this little paradise. We had a luxury pavillion with private garden and were able to check in right at our arrival around 9 am. Where to start: The hotel is located in a wonderful garden full a flowers, the individual pavillions are located all over the hotel, reception, bar and restaurant are open buildings. The staff is amazing: friedly, attentive, always smiling and helpful. The second morning I asked if they had mangos and they organized them for me. The beach has white sand, the water is crystal clear and as soon as you lie on your comfy sunbed in the shade, the staff brings you a bottle of water, fruitssticks or little cocktails. Dinner is served in the Restaurants and it is not a buffet which we loved. You eat à la carte every evening and they change the menu every four days. Food is delicious and ranges from local to international, it was really great. Also breakfast is individual. They only have a small buffet the rest can be ordered from their large breakfast menu. The staff is amazing, always smiling and helpful and making everyone feeling at home. I forgot my sons cuddly toy and they are sending it back home. They also served us a private full breakfast before our departure at 06:30. The hotel is located on the North West and you can reach the rest of the island easily. All rooms have free wifi and we had a Nespresso machine, iPod station, DVD player and a huge and comfortable bed. The Spas was also perfect and they organize free activities such as Yoga, Thai Chi every morning. We really had a wonderful vacation and hope to come back to Mauritius soon. We can only highly recommend The Oberoi and its staff which made our stay really special. Thank you very much!

Perfection - again!

We have just returned from our third visit to the Oberoi in Mauritius, which lived up to all of the expectations built up from our previous visits. From the moment we arrived and were warmly greeted like old friends, to the moment we left, waved away by the General Manager and some of our friends from the Spa, the service was as excellent as ever. It would be nice to highlight individuals who excelled, but do do so would be a disservice to their colleagues, as there was a uniformly high standard from the bars & restaurants, to the spa, to the housekeeping, gardening, beach staff etc. What especially impresses is the genuine friendliness of everyone - the staff all appear to share a passion and enthusiasm for customer service. The complex is a haven of peace and tranquility in a glorious setting. At times we felt slightly guilty that we should have been getting out and about a bit more to explore the island, but we went to relax and re-charge the batteries, and the Oberoi was the perfect setting in which to do this. Our one excursion was to hire a yacht to go sailing for the day, a trip that I would thoroughly recommend. Our two crew members made the trip so enjoyable and memorable, not least for the incredible lunch that they whipped up on the on-board barbeque! We have already made plans for other holidays in 2014, but have worked these to enable us to squeeze in another return here next year, confident that we will get exactly what we expect.

Amazing hotel

The Oberoi is a very special place - my husband still thinks the food there was the best he ever had. Breakfast was excellent - waffles, banana pancakes, eggs benedict, fresh fruit - all delicious. Lunch and dinner was great as well - and there was enough choice not to get bored as well. We didn't have a single meal that wasn't great. We stayed in a private garden villa which was lovely. The gardens of the hotel are amazing as well - there are also a lot of birds around that we had never seen before. The beach is not huge but kept very well. Beach service was great. In general, the service here was the best we ever experienced - everyone is genuinely friendly and greets you with a smile. Snorkelling is possible, but can't be compared to the Maldives for example. We rented a speed boat for a day cruise and further afield the snorkelling is OK. Overall - if you love food, privacy and great service - book now.

The Best of the Best

We returned to the UK from this amazing island and even more amazing hotel a couple of days ago. The 13 hour flight is worth every second from the moment that you enter the drive to the Oberoi. We were warmly greeted with cold towels and mojitos, taken to our room immediately and checked in there. No sitting around in reception. This set the standard for the rest of our stay at a hotel which Marc Denton, the General manager and every member of his staff deliver with genuine friendliness and sincerity. We have stayed in many superior hotels, but the Oberoi tops them all. From day one, we were treated to a level of service that we have never experienced before by every member of staff we encountered, including the gardeners of which there are many. The grounds of this ' sanctuary' are kept immaculate. The two pools one of which is adult only, are beautiful, and the beaches of which there are three separate areas with lots of sun beds are sandy / coral and spotlessly clean. The beach bar service was really good with complimentary ice and water given out regularly along with surprising other treats during the day. Thank you especially to Keesh and the team. The hotel beach activity team were really helpful, and there are lots of complimentary water sports. Whilst we were there, the hotel hosted a Presidential state visit, and when speaking to Sonah the restaurant manager if he and his staff were busier because of it, he said Yes, but the guests always came first. This was evident. The food and service in both restaurants in the hotel was wonderful. We were accommodated in a luxury pavillion with fabulous views of both sea and mountains, which was absolutely beautiful. We lost each other in the massive bed which was so comfortable! You must visit the spa and where we had the best couples massage from Preety and Isabelle in beautifully calm surroundings. Do participate in the Touching Senses programme provided at no extra cost. We watched Ravi, a sous chef create a delicious fish curry, were taken around the grounds by a world famous conservationist, who explained the many trees, plants and animals, and went star gazing with another expert. There are many others too, but we ran out of time. We now understand why guests return repeatedly, and we look forward to joining this list. Finally to Marc, thank you and congratulations to you and all your staff, too many to mention by name for providing us with an experience which will never be forgotten.

Five star paradise

Our two week holiday started with The Residence, we were worried to leave there because we had such a wonderful stay and always a concern may be that you move on and things may not have been better. Fortunately we were proved wrong and should not have worried. For me the key reasons for describing this hotel as above five star for the overall experience was for the personal touch, individualised care and real concern that you were having the best holiday. Examples include, they knew our names, our villa number, what we liked for breakfast, lunch and dinner, when the menu changed mid week, they were delighted to put on a dish from the prior menu, just because my husband mentioned it. During our stay an African President arrived for 3 days, the staff went out of their way to ensure all guests weren't upset by the additional security arrangements and kept checking this point. Both restaurants were excellent although our preference was The main restaurant preferring The Rocks for our lunchtime salad and beer. The food was beautifully presented, small portion size of fine fining was appreciated and service all round excellent. I was particularly grateful to Sonah, one of the team leaders in the restaurant, who was very kind to me when I developed a bad cold. Without hesitation the ginger and lemon grass infusion was offered together with lavender cloth which really helped. We stayed in villa 106 which I think had one of the best views are really good privacy in the pool. The sun set was immediately in front of our villa. The villa was beautifully clean and looked like it had recently been refurbished, a very comfortable bed and pillow! There are so many waterspouts you can keep yourself occupied all day, we tried sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, there was also scuba, catamaran, parasailing and water skiing. We found the reef provided real shelter for the beach and snorkelling was therefore very calm, we have never seen such crustal clear water. The water temperature was between 28 and 30 inside the reef, a little collier outside but comfortable enough for snorkelling, be sure to ask the team for the best snorkelling areas, mew found some location were better than others, there was also some great snorkelling inside the reef off the beach although care needs to taken with all the passing boats. The watersports guys will give you a buoy to keep you safe. Wi Fi access excellent. We did not turn the tv on or watch any of the films which were available. All in all a wonderful stay and although we try new places we will definitely come back again, every box was ticked and we had the most brilliant time. Our very grateful thanks to the General Manager, Marc Denton, for leading a team of staff that really do want to ensure you have a fabulous holiday.

Spectacular hotel and unforgettable wedding

I had to write a review for our fantastic and truly amazing stay at The Oberoi Hotel. My husband and I got married at this wonderful resort on 3 July 2013, with our ceremony taking place on the jetty on the beach - a time in our lives that we will never forget. When we first arrived at our villa I was in awe!! Though we had seen pictures of the hotel and some of the rooms previously, nothing prepared us for how truly amazing and immaculate our villa was. We booked a luxury villa with private pool. We arrived at the resort at 7am, but even so our room was ready for us. The food was superb, with a mix of Indian, traditional Mauritian, French and modern British dishes. I'm convinced I gained half a stone, but I didn't care! Great wine list that my husband was impressed with (he knows more about wine than I do). The service was impeccable - the staff are so friendly and can't do enough for you. We booked our Weddingmoon through Kuoni, so all the wedding arrangements were taken care of before we arrived. If you're thinking about getting married in Mauritus don't worry too much about the formalities (paperwork, affidavit, oaths etc.). It sounded really complicated, but all the legal bits and bobs were done in a couple of hours the day before we got married. Amanda - our wedding co-ordinator at The Oberoi - was really lovely, as was our Kuoni rep - Stefanie. I had part of the Oberoi spa all to myself on the day of our wedding where Preeti did a superb job with my hair and makeup. She even helped lacing up my wedding dress corset. I was really well looked after on the day of our wedding - so I felt completely relaxed, happy and excited. More Bridechilla than Bridezilla! The General Manager - Marc Denton - had been on holiday and arrived back on the day of our wedding and made a point of coming to see us right after our ceremony to congratulate us. We used the spa several times before and after we got married (it's fantastic.... make sure you try the lemongrass tea!), had dinner on the beach the evening of our wedding (seven courses!!) and took an amazing helicopter ride around the island. The Oberoi arranged several other excursions for us including deep sea fishing for my husband, a visit to the Casela Nature Park (book a lion walk!!) and dinner at 20 Degrees Sud in Grand Baie (amazing cocktails!!). A truly wonderful hotel in a truly beautiful place. We definitely made the right choice.

Best managed hotel ever visited !!

I have spent 5 days there with family and friends and I can only say that I have never ever stayed in the such a property where the entire staff knows what exactly you want as if they were given lessons to read a guest's body language. There is nothing we can complain about as everything is perfect like the way staff greets you while you are walking around the resort, the ambiance, rooms, location and the food. I would like to thank the entire staff and the General Manager to make our holidays so special with their amazing services.

Place to spent 16 days

If You will decide to go to Mauritius You will have to know: Oberoi side of the island is very good for summer months (April - August) - less wind less rains / 4 Seasons side is more suitable for, Mauritius " summer (October - March) - strong winds during hot weather. We traveled in April-May - so we were lucky for our choice of the hotel. After rains in the South and in the middle of the island we saw a lot of rainbows in the sky. So let's talk about the hotel. Pros: 1) Extremely clean garden and paths (daily wash from birds spots) 2) Rooms are like on the photos. A little bit small but cosy. 3) Personnel are very welcomed (sometimes it's annoying) 4) FREE water sports: water ski, snorkeling within domain reef / Three beaches!!!! 5) SPA - try treatments by Lek and Maya - hope You will like)))) 6) We had a problem with food variety - we accept only app.1 / 3 of the meals offered in menu. After a week of talking we found a brilliant solution - the chef offered to make the dishes upon our requests (NOT included in the menu). This special touch is very appreciated from our side - but I don't understand why other people accept such menu. (may be we were very naughty - but for me it was strange). As for dining outside (not in the hotel) - the food at the same quality cost the same money as in hotel restaurants, plus You will waste the time to get in / return. In general I was disappointed with seafood on the island. Maybe I do not accept creole style? 7) The shop - Home textile is very VERY good quality with authentic stylish. Lack of sun screen creams - buy in advance or other places. 8) Trip to NORTHERN island by PREDATOR boat is obligatory - it's expensive (around 1, 000 USD) - but You will be dropped to the island before other catamarans (at low season it was, only " 15!!! With 20-30 people each) arrive and You will get may be the best snorkeling on Mauritius - we saw tuna at cleaning factory, yellow pipe-fish and a lot of other creatures never seen before. We asked the staff - they said boat rent is working ONLY through hotels reservations - company policy. Contras: 1) Air-conditioning: in our rooms the system was fine. But in the room of my mum it was too stale air - it usually appears with old, non-proper maintained system. 2) A lot of flies and other different insects. They didn't bite us - but annoying. In the evening all around the gardens and restaurant ares the staff put aroma sticks and lamps - but it didn't work. 3) Birds in the morning - be aware from the rooms situated near the tallest trees - other way You will be awaken at 5 o'clock 4) Food and beverages - I didn't like almost nothing from th menu list (we got twice lists as we stayed 16 days). Only the Chef helped - but it is NOT proper services for this hotel level in general. Also I tried 5-7 several cocktails - no one was good - so I switched to wine. The wine list is not very long with mostly wines from SOuth Africa. European wines are too expensive. They do NOT offer dinner at sunset - for me it's very strange. All restaurant for dinner open at 7 o'clock only (it's all around the island - exception only for fast-food) 5) Lack of fruits variety - but it's general problem described in deferent topics before. 6) A lot of people NOT from hotel are going hither and thither - as they built a pier where they fish. You will be lucky to make a picture at sunset without other people. 7) NO music channels on TV - but they have DVD and book libraries Recommendation: 1) Restaurant reservation in advance is highly recommended - CAUTION You cannot choose a table - If You want a table waterfront / or near the pool - come at 7 o'clock 2) Dinner time is cool (especially if windy) - don't forget jacket / sweater 3) You can order a private dinner on the beach - for extra fees - not very impressed - but You will be a little bit remoted from other people (while locals will be going along the beach). 4) At Casela do NOT take Safary tour You will see only zebras, ostrich, pea-cocks, deers and pigs. The view from the hills is not very impressive. - Cats interaction is much more interesting. 5) If You rent a car - the road is VERY narrow 30 cm from the wheels - NO shoulders - just 1m drop (we saw several cars drop down from the road) - it's a specific cased by sugar-corn growing // go around Floreal - if You do not need go exactly in Floreal (and if You don't have GPS navigator) - very complex orientation - we go through 3 times and 3 times were lost - of course locals helped (but once even policemen (there were a group of 4) couldn't read the map given in the hotel!!!!) // CAUTION night-time - lots of bikes without reflectors - dark men on the black bikes -)))) - BTW GPS navigator didn't show correct turn on the map before hotel - check the road signs!!!! 6) We were disappointed by visiting L'Avenue du sucre - NO production - it's ONLY museum. But tea-factory visiting we liked except tea-tasting - we tasted 10-12 varieties but for sale were only 4 - Q - why did they give us tea sorts which we couldn't buy??? Anyway the hotel stay You will like I'm sure - just be ready for several moments))))) Have a great unforgettable holiday!!!!!!!

Outstanding!

We decided to spend 5 nights in Mauritius after a holiday in the Seychelles. After much reading and deliberating we decided to stay at The Oberoi. We stayed in a luxury pavilion which was very well appointed and had a wonderful flow to it. I did initially feel the bathroom and closet was small but we managed just fine. We were given a room overlooking turtle bay and and close to the adult swimming pool which was perfect for us. Their property is stunning. Walking anywhere was such a pleasure because the gardens are so well kept and is a feast for your eyes. The service is beyond excellent and everyone knows your name from day one and you are greeted whenever you pass a member of staff. While lying on the beach, we had a few special requests for our drinks and not only were they perfect, all the staff that worked at the bar and restaurant were informed of how we liked it and we didn't have to remind new staff that served us. We greatly appreciated that. My husband need some medication and they gladly called around to find the correct meds for us. Our air-conditioner failed to work on one evening after dinner and they speedily sent a technician to fix it. They then delivered a flower arrangement and a card the next day to apologise for the inconvenience caused. Nothing was too much of an effort for them and was always done with a smile. The beach isn't very large but it was perfect for relaxing and swimming. There are two pools to enjoy - the structure and and design of the pool areas is artwork in itself. The food from breakfast, through to lunch, snacks and dinner was outstanding - Michelin star standards for sure! Be sure to make a booking at " on the rocks " in advance as it is small and you want to enjoy dinner here as well. (The grilled lobster with Madagascan vanilla sauce is not to be missed) The main restaurant is fine dining while " on the rocks " is a little more relaxed. We also thoroughly enjoyed dining at the Gunpowder room on one of the seafood evenings. There is always light live music playing during dinner which adds to your evening and creates a wonderful ambience in which to enjoy your meals. A drink at the bar during sunset is a must! They also have a fantastic senses program with sculptor classes, astronomy lessons, cooking lessons, yoga lessons which are all complimentary. Also make sure you take advantage of the free watersports. The spa was very good and we enjoyed many treatments. The gym is also very well appointed. It rained on the first night but the weather was wonderful the rest of the time. We hired a boat to go dolphin watching (and we later swam with them) It was our best experience yet. Too many people to thank - because the service from all the staff and management is exceptional and really impressed us. Keep it up!

Holiday Heaven!

After staying at The Oberoi in Bali on 3 occasions we have become great fans of the Oberoi group and looked for another destination where we could enjoy their great customer service. We weren't disappointed with the Oberoi in Mauritius. We stayed in a pool villa for 2 weeks in September. Although our villa and pool wasn't quite as large or as private as the one in Bali it had everything we could wish for. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and very well maintained by the gardening team and we thoroughly enjoyed the free guided nature walk around the grounds by a very knowledgeable and informative guide (sorry, can't remember his name but a really nice chap!). We had booked 7 nights on DBB and 7 nights on BB. In retrospect we wish we had booked DBB for the whole fortnight, as although we hired a car for the other 7 nights the hotel is quite secluded and there are no other restaurants close by. The food in the main restaurant was absolutely sublime, and the service matched it. The staff could not have been more attentive or couteous. It seems a shame to mention names as there were no exceptions and I didn't take a note of other names, but a special mention for Raj (driver), Depak, Head of Housekeeping and Pritam the Head Concierge (I apologie if the names are spelt incorrectly). Mark Denton, the General Manager, runs a tight ship and all the staff had obviously been very well trained in customer service and I commend him highly for this. Like all Oberois, the hotel is small enough to ensure staff give a personal touch in all departments - from remembering our names within a day of arrival to ensuring we had absolutely everying we needed - and more. If you want to get away from the large, corporate hotels where you are just a room number, and enjoy exceptional service and hospitality then you can do no better than stay in an Oberoi hotel. We look forward to our return.

Paradise island, paradise resort, paradise staff!!

It was fantastic, we went for honeymoon!! The staff are great, the resort is beautiful, it was amazing tohave a private pool in our back garden! But most of all we had to mention Gunness the food and beverage manager who went over and above all expectations for us. He helped us ship in kosher food from south africa and although they ahd never catered for kosher guests before they dealt with it as though they had been doing it for years. They even took the liberty of buying us extra meals when they saw the portion size might not be enough for us and they bought us brand new crockery and cutlery. And i had no idea it was even possible to present packaged food in the way they managed to!! It was all fantastic and the staff are so polite and friendly and will do absolutely anything to make your stay perfect - which it was!!

Lifetime experience !

We decided to spend two weeks at the Oberoi hotel, Mauritius. Since it was our honeymoon we expected to be special. Well, what can we say... Every detail exceeded our expectations !!! Let's begin with the service. Extraordinary. The room ? Better than perfect. The hotel ? Beauty at its best. We just can't find something on the negative side. We'll try to describe some details here. When we arrived we were greeted with smiles and mojitos at the greeting pavillion. What an experience, what a view, what an atmosphere. And those mojitos were great... Afterwards we were guided to our room. The grounds : perfect ten ! The gardens were very fine and taken care of every detail. The lighting outside (but also inside) was adding to the atmosphere. Then we got inside our room. The hotel had two beautiful presents for us and our honeymoon. Every detail of the decoration was adding something to our impression, which was already the finest. And the staff, always kind and smiling. After some relaxing in our room we went to the restaurant for dinner. Now, that was an experience ! Best quality of service and food... unforgettable (everyone should try the smoked scallops and the curry, but everything on the menu was really very fine). We should mention that we stayed at the hotel for fourteen nights. We had dinner outside the hotel just once. Well, it was nice too, but we were really enjoying our dinner at the hotel's restaurant (we should have gone full-board...). The staff helped us for that (not only the quality of the meals). At this point, we'd like to express our thanks to some members of the staff. Our friend Mr. Shaan (not shown on the photo), you made us feel like home and you gave us one more reason to remember our honeymoon forever. Mr. Mamed (the best football player in Mauritius, shown on the left of the photo) you really pleased us, thank you and keep up the good work. Mr. Anesh (shown on the right of the photo), thank you for your kindness, the pieces of advice you were always giving us and that very interesting conversation we had the other night. Mr. Marco (not shown on the photo), thank you for those tasty mojitos and our dog sends greetings to yours. Of course every member of the staff was very helpful and kind. We appreciated that. As a conclusion, our honeymoon at The Oberoi Hotel, Mauritius, will always be remembered from us, thanks to the quality and beauty of the hotel and the five-plus star efforts and service of the staff (a remarkable combination). Fourteen tempting days of relaxation, fitted for our honeymoon. Thank you all !!!

WAHNSINN!!!

Was soll man da noch sagen!?

Where do I start..

Stayed at the Oberoi, Mauritius for a week in April to relax after a wonderful safari in Botswana. Relax we did not. Travelled with my wife and 12 year old daughter. Car transfer was great, the problems started on arrival at hotel. My daughter was treated with indifference, welcome drinks for my wife and I, but daughter not expected ! Bed provided in room, which was fine, but when anything extra was requested, the waits or failure to provide were incredible. Most staff were very inexperienced. i would add the manager in this category. The chain obviously benefits from employing cheap, unmotivated staff. The only good one were the boys on the beach, who provided towels, drinks etc with great enthusiasm. The restaurant service was the worst I have experienced at a luxury hotel. The menu changed rarely. The service delay huge. On our last night we ordered our first course, to be told 30 minutes later that one of the dishes was unavailable, so could we reorder. My wife orderdd the curry dish available and after a few mouthfuls bit on a piece of glass !. We were told that this had come from one of the small accompanying glass pots. my wife was asked if she would like to go to hospital. Seeing as she had a cut mouth, I do not think this was entirely neccesary. 24 hours after our return home, my daughter became quite ill. Sickness, fevere etc. I took her to the hospital for tests, as we had been in a malarial region, i thought it could be that. However, after tests, we were told she had contacted Salmonella food poisoning. This could only have come from the hotel, as she started to feel unwell on the plane home. I recall seeing a few reports of food poisoning at this hotel last year on this website. I complained to my travel agent, who took up my complaint with the hotel. A letter was received with many denials, and accusations of lies. They did admit the glass incident, but felt that there offer to call an ambulance was sufficient. We were offerd a complimentary 3 night stay at the resort. I will not be taking up their offer, in fact i would probably pay a few thousand pounds NOT to stay at this hotel.

Food poisoning and disappointing customer service

We have just returned from a 14 night stay at the Oberoi Mauritius, where we and several other guests as it turned out, contracted food poisoning from the hotel restaurant food. We were hospitalised because of it and placed on IV drips in a local clinic. The hotel denied all responsibility and acted insensitively to the whole episode, inspite of the fact that neither us nor the other sick guests had eaten or drunk anything outside of the hotel, and 3 different doctors' diagnoses were clear. FOOD POISONING! All in all, for a hotel that prides itself on supposed top quality customer service, discretion and sensistivity (according to its website) it failed on all counts in our opinion. We would never go back to this, or any other Oberoi hotel again. It was a pleasure to get home - not something I would have expected to have said after spending £8, 000 on a holiday. If we overlook the food poisoning episode, the food is mediocre (the restaurant menu repeated itself on average every 3 days) and overpriced (a meal for two averaging around £120 per night, including one bottle of wine). There are far better places to stay in our opinion.

Not really for Honeymooners

It's hard to review our 2 hotels we stayed at without a comparison in class. We stayed at the One & Only Le St Geran for the first week and the Oberoi for the second week so I'll copy and paste the same review. O & O - Upon arrival greeted with a big " bong " like you see in the movies followed by a refreshing drink and towel. Oberoi - Greeted by a receptionist and although acknowledged it was our honeymoon got our names wrongthis happened all the way through O & O - taken to our room via all the facilities the hotel has to offer Oberoi - Taken to our room and asked if we wanted to know where anything is... erm, that'll be nice O & O - our room on arrival had gifts for myself and my new wife and a chilled bottle of Champagne awaiting. Our Butler came up shortly after to let us know he's around for anything we need and opened the Bottle. Lovely start and everything addressed as Mr & Mrs xxx Oberoi - Taken to our room and receptionist stated they need a credit card. We only had debit cards which wasn't acceptable to them. She called 2 mins later and stated she needs to take 3, 000 rupees each per day, or 25, 000 down payment immediately but will then charge us 5%.. huh ??? O & O - Had breakfast on the beach, Dinner on Jetty and a romantic bath arranged by our butler courtesy of the Hotel. Also £60 vouchers to spend in the spa.. Oberoi - Had a romantic bath run for us on last night. We actually went out on the last night to Grand Bay so the bath was stone cold when we got back. O & O - Amazing beach and a great band for nightlife named the Famous 9 Oberoi - Nice gardens but no real beach and nightlife non existant really. O & O - Food was expensive but the 3 restaurants were amazing and in room dining a little treat Oberoi - Had food in the restaurant 1st night with a cat around our table first night and a dying bird next morning. Didn't eat at the restaurant again as the menu didn't give many options and wasn't that great. Had in room dining twice also and once they didn't even turn up. We tried calling to find out what has happened but always engaged. No apologies ever came. O & O - Upon check out asked if we'd like a glass of Champers or spritzer Oberoi - Upon check out our bags were 15 mins late for our cab. Maybe we would have appreciated the Oberoi more if we'd gone the first week, but after a day was wishing we'd stayed 2 weeks at the One and Only, the difference in class and service is immense which is surprising as they were the same price. The staff at One and Only were always at hand whereas the Oberoi some staff were nice and some were not really bothered about being there. I was surprised as obviously read reviews of both hotels but unless you do both wouldn't understadn the gulf in class. In all honesty if it's a honeymoon you're on go to the One and Only as the service levels are far far greater. We didn't go to Mauritius for loads of freebies but one hotel looked after us and one couldn't have cared less..... There was a lot more in difference but won't go on too much as you get the picture. Although the Oberoi was picturesque and had lovely gardens it just missed the main ingrediant for a honeymoon Shame

Great - but with some gripes

We stayed for two weeks at the Oberoi Mauritius at the end of September. The hotel itself is beautiful - the grounds are lush and attractive and the rooms were of a very high standard. The hotel has two swimming pools - if I was being fussy I'd say they could be a little bigger, but they're pretty and not too busy. Breakfasts were absolutely excellent - best of all they're generously served until 11am so there's no rushing you in and out of your seats as we've found in other hotels. Also excellent is the fact that water sports are free, as is tennis and the gym. The beach is pleasant, although it's not the biggest or widest and has stones / coral mixed with the sand so not the easiest to walk on, and there tends to be an omnipresent container ship or two sitting nearby on the horizon most of the time. However I'm afraid I do have some gripes. Not massive issues but I do think they'd be useful for those thinking of booking this hotel to know about. First of all (and perhaps the most major issue) is that the hotel only has one restaurant, where both breakfast and evening meal are served. This actually didn't bother us as we're not the type to eat in a hotel every night and we'd deliberately chosen the Oberoi on a B'n'B basis as it was near to the tourist resort of Grand Baie (more later). But if we'd booked half board I think I'd be fairly disappointed to be eating in the same place morning and evening regardless of how good the food was. Also I don't think the ambience and appearance of the restaurant was *special* enough for the evening - it's an L shape, has no music, and seems more fitting for breakfast - considering the hotel is 5 star I feel they really could do so much more. Secondly I felt the bar facilities were pretty poor - whilst it's a lovely setting the evening entertainment (which wasn't the best anyways) finished at 10pm, and the barmen started clearing the bottles set out behind the bar and the lamps at the entrance at 11pm. Don't get me wrong - we're not clubbers and would loathe a brash noisy tacky bar. But I've never been to a hotel with such an underused bar - if I was the manager I'd be seriously concerned to find only 2 or 3 people sitting in a silent bar at 10.30! I also take the earlier reviewer's point that in a 5* hotel you expect 5* prices - but £9 for a glass wine??? If I was recommending the hotel to others I'd suggest going half board and making the trip into Grand Baie for food / entertainment at night. It's not as close as some brochures might suggest - a good 15 minute taxi journey - and it's not a bustling tourist mecca as others suggest but it does offer some good options for eating out. This leads me on to a further gripe - on a number of occasions the reception staff were actually fairly pushy about us *needing* to book a restaurant when we tried to book a taxi. The implication they give is that you can't just go into Grand Baie and find a restaurant - you MUST book one (at which point they bring out a book with a list of their recommended restaurants in it). Sorry, but this is rubbish - there are at least 10 or 12 restaurants along the main strip (including a fantastic Mexican - next to the petrol station - well worth a try!) and two bars. Presumably the list that the Oberoi has is for restaurants that they work on commission with, whatever the reason I found it very annoying. Taxis aren't cheap - about £20 for a round trip but food and drink is much cheaper than the hotel. The nearby Victoria hotel (we walked along the beach - I'd recommend taking a torch!) has exceptionally friendly staff and a fantastic Italian restaurant. Another tip is don't bother with Port Louis for an evening meal during the week - we went on a Wednesday to the Waterfront area and it was absolutely deserted with shut bars (and I felt a little unsafe - our taxi driver told us to wait outside the police station at 11pm when we'd arranged for him to come back!!) - it's pretty grim. Apparently it only comes alive at weekends - however our experience was bad enough for us not to go back to see if that was correct! Finally a quick mention of the weather. It was hot (about 29C) and sunny most days, although fairly cool at night - best to take a jumper or light jacket if you're planning on going at that time. Most Mauritians we spoke to said we had picked the best time to go - June to August is actually pretty cool whilst January to February can be very hot (up to about 40C). The North West and West of the island generally has better weather than the East. Overall I enjoyed the holiday but Mauritius is very much geared up for the tourist that stays in their hotel for the entire trip. If that's what you like, then it's probably a very nice option. If you prefer a bit more atmosphere and choice then I can't help think there are better options for the same price (or less!) in countries such as India or Thailand. As a final point however we filled in the little *tell us what you thought* slip that was in our room with some of the above comments - we often do although I'm dubious whether they are ever read. However in this case a couple of months later we received a personal letter from the General Manager in response! Pretty impressive!

Great but a bit overpriced

We chose this hotel as we have been to other Oberoi hotels in Asia and India and loved them. It is a lovely hotel and we really enjoyed our 12 nights (for the price of 7!) at the end of November. Couple of tips- the hotel restaurant is extortionately priced but the food is great. We only ate there 3 nights out of the 12, partly because of the prices and also because it is very rich food and it had a limited menu. We walked along the beach to the Maritim Hotel's beach side restaurant 3 times where the food was great and nearly half the price and the setting lovely. Once they found out we were from the Oberoi we were treated to free aperitifs, specially set up table on the beach etc. They couldn't have been more attentive. I don't think many Oberoi guests walk there but although it was a bit rocky if the tide was out and a bit of an adventure when dark it only took 5 minutes. They have a huge bar here too. There is also a bit of evening 'entertainment' which is a change from the very quite Oberoi. (bit naff but quite funny). We also walked the other way to the Victoria Hotel and had dinner at the Italian restaurant there which was good too. We were told they were full but, again, when we said we were from the Oberoi there was suddenly room and we were treated really well again! We hired a car for 2 days for half the price the hotel quoted. There are lots of small operators around. (We also got a dent which they did not charge us for...). In the car we went to Trou en Biches (the nearest village) a couple of times to a really cheap and cheerful Seychelle's restaurant where the food was GREAT. I can't remember what it was called (Coco something I think) but if you are driving through the village it is quite a long way up on the right and brightly coloured. We tried Crevache D'Or too, which was recommended by the hotel- OK but again, a bit formal and pricey. The shops in the other hotels are also good for toiletries, cheaper gifts etc than the Oberoi, which tends to sell things you don't really want or need (eg cashmere overcoats). (We also stocked up on beer and snacks in the supermarket-a can of beer was 20p compared to £2 in the hotel). The hotel was full when we were there but there was always enough sunbeds to go round (see previous posts), and we felt that the staff at the pool, beach etc were attentive anough without being over the top. We stayed in a Pavillion room which we loved and had a good open view of the gardens and the sea. Yes, you could see other guests around you sometimes, but we felt that some of the villas were miles back from the sea and with a big wall around you, you wouldn't be able to appreciate the surroundings. If you haven't been to Mauritius before it is lovely but it is fairly built up so although the Oberoi is fabulous it doen't feel as exclusive as others we have been to eg Lombok where you feel you are the only hotel for miles. There are 5 along the same stretch of beach. However fab hotel, great staff, lots of watersports (free sailing, waterskiing etc etc), lovely breakfast (have in room). There were some people there who looked that they had money to burn (mainly French) but I think we were pretty average- ie don't mind paying if it's worth it but not willing to pay £40 for scampi at dinner!). I realise the above makes us sound really penny pinching which we're not, it was just nice to escape the hotel sometimes and not totally bankrupt ourselves!

Another case of foodpoisoning

Returned from MAuritius after a short (thankfully) visit in early December 2005. My husband contracted food poisoning the first dinner we had in the hotel. Red mullet, or crab probably to blame. Shocked to find staff and management showed no interest in finding out his state of health for three or four days, although they were informed within hours of him being sick. He was confined to dishes of steamed rice and could not partake of anything else for the whole of our vacation, despite the fact we had already prepaid for HAlf board. Eventually the manageress let slip that some other guests were also ill- but was very keen for us to believe that they all had a bug.... funny that I didn't catch it also. She was obviously trying to cover her back. The hotel never admitted responsibility. Now we see from this website that there had been other cases of (More serious) food poisoning a month earlier. Doctor eventually called and his prescription for food poisoning did work. We left the hotel extremely disgusted at their lack of concern and attention. They were very keen for us to settle our extras, including the cost of the bowls of rice and extra bottles of water and fizzy drinks to ward off dehydration. Eventually after uneasy conversations with management they did offer a token discount for the dinners my husband had missed, which amounted to £200, token conpared to the £2800 we paid for the accommodation and food (5nights), Never mind the £££ for the business class flights there nad back. He was not in a fit state to sunbathe, swim, certainly not play tennis, use the watersports facilities, make full use of the spa etc. Had previously enjoyed a SUPERB holiday at ST. Geran, on the opposite coast whiich in terms of service was truly the best you could get anywhere in the world. My advice, Dont go near the Oberoi. The cats at dinner scrounging and begging for food nad the ducks waddling about and messing the footpaths should put anyone off- This is NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM A FIRST CLASS RESORT. Oberoi sit up and take notice !!!

Nice, but not as amazing as it should be

We stayed at the Oberoi Mauritius in Sep 2004 for our honeymoon. It was a nice place, but for the cost, I expect a higher level of service and attention to detail. The resort is beautiful - the grounds are so well done, it seems unreal. It is peaceful and quiet and a lovely setting for a honeymoon. The photos on the Oberoi web site are accurate - it really does look that amazing. Where things fell a bit short: 1) We purchased a honeymoon package directly from the hotel, which included a complimentary upgrade to the next room level, based on availability. We did not receive the upgrade, even though the resort was only 60% booked. 2) With our honeymoon package, we also received a complimentary dinner. Upon arrival, we received a note from the chef stating that he would " personally meet " with us to discuss our dinner options. What a wonderful touch! But that personal meeting never happened and we had to ask twice about our complimentary dinner. 3) The resort is very quiet, there is only one dinner restaurant and we were getting a little stir crazy, so one night we decided to head up to Grand Baie (nearby tourist / resort area) for dinner. We asked the hotel to call a taxi and they insisted that we have dinner at one of their " approved " restaurants. We just wanted to take a taxi up to the area and walk around and explore on our own, but the concierge insisted that we would have a hard time finding restaurants that were open on a Sunday night. So we were driven to one of the hotel's approved restaurants (there were about 10 to choose from) and then the hotel taxi driver waited in the parking lot for us to finish dinner and then took us back to the hotel. I felt like we had a chaperone. I don't know if this was their idea of providing a high level of service, but it was very annoying. And we saw that there were DOZENS of open restaurants in the Grand Baie area that we would have loved to check out. 4) The staff is inconsistently trained. We asked one person at the front desk for some mosquito bite lotion and he said he was sorry, but had nothing for us, good luck. Later we asked someone else who said he would send someone out to purchase some for us. 5) The room was nice, but not as clean as it should be. Our bed had a ledge on it that clearly had not been dusted in some time (covered in hairs, dust and other debris). Also, the bed pillows are kept in a storage trunk at the foot of your bed during the day and they take them out at night during the turndown service and place them on the bed for sleeping. Unfortunately, the storage trunk has a musty smell, which of course ends up on your pillows. A little disappointing. Now I realize that none of the above issues were major problems, but when you are spending $700 USD a night for a hotel room (and that is the least expensive room they offer), your expectations are higher. I have stayed at Four Seasons, Ritz Carltons and Peninsulas for much less money and better service. Yes, the place is beautiful, but atmosphere is only a part of the experience - the service level needs to be elevated.

A remarkable hotel: one of the best anywhere

Mauritius is a fascinating island, previously a colony of the Dutch, the French, and until the latter part of the 20th Century, the British. It is a popular destination for Europeans seeking winter sun in generally up-market hotels. There are probably more 5-star hotels per square mile on this relatively small island (about the size of Tenerife, bigger than Madeira) than anywhere except Hong Kong and Singapore. Competition among hotels is fierce. In my opinion, The Oberoi shines in this company. In the 5-star bracket there are two ways to go in Mauritius: the glitz-and-glamour luxury hotel which, apart from the beach outside, could be anywhere in the world, or the more low-profile but superbly comfortable establishments, with an absence of vulgarity, of which The Oberoi is a stella example. The Oberoi, Mauritius, is part of an Indian-owned and managed chain that is famous for its standards of service, and those standards are at their highest here. Never have we encountered such smiling, helpful yet unobtrusive service as we experienced here -- not obsequious, but genuinely wanting to help and be helpful, from senior management down to the houseman or housemaid, from the time of making a reservation to waving goodbye. The hotel is laid out in " village " style right on the beachfront, set around a large tropical pool stocked with koi fish. Three or four larger buildings, all with steeply-raked thatched roofs, are set aside for reception, the restaurant, bar and tea pavilion. There is a large swimming pool and terrace bar / restaurant. The " rooms " are all suites of varying size built into a series of thatched " pavilions " or villas set around the koi pool and on the beach front, all amid lush tropical gardens. All are very private. Inside, the spacious rooms are finished in natural tones, with a generous sitting area, a huge bathroom with a decadent, vast, sunken bath, and a dressing room. Meals in the restaurant are superb, featuring both local and more international cuisine, though with a distinct Asian touch. Breakfast is a la carte -- included in room rate -- and delicious. Evening meals can be wonderfully romantic, thanks to the architecture and setting of the restaurant pavilion. We enjoyed every aspect of our week at The Oberoi, and can't think of a single thing to criticise... except possibly the prices of items in the hotel shop. Otherwise, it was a wonderful place to relax, unwind, and to enjoy the ambiance the hotel creates. If your idea of luxury is a Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons then perhaps The Oberoi isn't for you. If on the other hand you like the Aman resort style, but are terrified of Aman prices, then The Oberoi is the place to go. It's one of the best hotels I've experienced anywhere. Highly recommended.

Stunning Silver Wedding Celebration at the Oberoi Mauritius

We have just returned from 8 days at the stunning Oberoi Mauritius where we celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary on the 29th September. Hotels seldom live up to glossy brochure promises, and as a couple we have experienced many let downs over the years, but the Oberoi exceeded our expectations. It is a beautiful, serenely peaceful oasis with attentive, respectful staff who could not do enough for us. We found the atmosphere truly magical from the moment we arrived, when welcomed like royalty in a specially constructed greeting pavilion with incredible views of the immaculate grounds and turquiose Indian Ocean. We were pampered by smiling staff throughout the hotel, including being served complimentary ice cold water and fruits and handed cooling towels by the Oberoi beach boys as we lay on our sun loungers. The view from our room was idyllic, a garden of tropical blooms, overlooking a turqoiuse bay, backed by a dramatic mountain range. We were so relaxed by the time we left for the airport we had to be virtually poured into the car! We found the Oberoi a lovely place to celebrate 25 years of marriage and were made to feel like the only guests staying there, it was very special. However, after reading a recent review from the Chicago Honeymooners who incidently must have been there at the same time as us, I must both disagree and concede with some of his points. We also benefitted from what I understood was a complimentary package for Honeymoon and Special Aniversary guests and also did not recieve a room upgrade, but our room was beautiful so this was not a problem for us. The complimentary massage for two at the idyllic spa was a dream, and definately not to be missed! We also recieved a note from the chef to say he would meet with us to discuss our special complimentary dinner, which he did not do in person, however, our requests were forwarded on to him and he produced a wonderful menu especially for us. This was served by attentive staff, surrounded by candles on the beach just yards from the lapping waves, and followed with a Anniversary cake. Just how much more could one ask for? I concede that the hotel was a little isolated but many coastal hotels in Mauritius are much more so, Grand Baie and Port Louis were just 15mins away by cab. The hotel did seem to influence taxi drivers, i. e prices and waiting to take you back to the hotel, but when we went out for dinner we were not told where we could go, indeed our driver recommended many cheap and excellent places in Grand Baie. I find it inconcievable that anyone (let alone Americans !) would allow themselves to be dictated to when they were paying the taxi fare, c'mon fellas! We had no problems with cleanliness of rooms, which were gorgeous, but we did have the cleaning staff store house next door which occasionally disturbed the otherwise peacefull privacy of our terrace breakfasts, which we did regretably had to complain about. Overall, I could not fault service or standard of accomadation, however I felt the beach did let the hotel down. Although immaculately maintained by the hotel, it was man-made and rocky, and to be honest not the soft powder fine, dream beach one might expect of Mauritius. Great snokelling from the hotels complimentary glass bottom boat, but swimming from the beach was not of the abandoned frolicking kind, very sharp coral and rocks lurked beneath to snag the unwary, so I preferred the unbelievably unique and lovely pools. These caveats aside, I would not hesitate to go again and recommend the Oberoi Mauritius for a romantic, peaceful and thouroughly pampered holiday in trully beautiiful surroundings.

FABULOUS HOTEL, SUPERB SERVICE, UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY

My wife and I have just returned from a 9-night holiday at the Oberoi, Mauritius. It was our first visit to the island, and the fact that it won't be our last is entirely due to the fabulous welcome, superb service and unforgettable experience associated with the Oberoi. It begins when you arrive at the hotel (a 50-minute journey from the airport, admittedly), because you are greeted by a small team of elegant reception staff who immediately whisk your luggage away to your room whilst you have some refreshing iced tea. There is none of the bureaucratic rigmarole that you get when you have to queue at 'Reception' in most hotels: the Oberoi has taken all that away, and replaced it with personal attention which delights all but, I suspect, the most jaded of customer palates. The Oberoi has virtually no special facilities for children, so it has few children and families staying there. This is excellent news, given that the majority of children nowadays are ill-behaved and rude, frequently ignored by their parents (on one of the occasions we had dinner in the Oberoi restaurant the beauty of the evening was undermined by a noisy three-generation family - English, naturally - who were fortunately some distance away from us, though their children considered it necessary to run round our table a couple of times). There are two swimming pools, both near the beach: one is for families, and the other is reserved for adults only, so the latter is peaceful, restful and delightful. The Oberoi's beach boys bring you flannels, iced water and slices of melon every so often, and can be persuaded to supply you with wine and 'beach bites' at lunchtime. The restaurant is expensive, as I see other guests have pointed out, but let's face it, the food is remarkably good and the ambience is spectacular. There is an excellent wine list, and although the wine prices are boosted by, I'm told, a 100% import duty (except for South African wines), they're not any higher than those typically found in a decent London restaurant. We went out a few times (the Oberoi seemingly has its own fleet of taxies which can cart you anywhere you want, and if it's to a restaurant then they will wait for you), and had some memorable dinners nearby, sometimes at a lower cost (but not always) ; the food was invariably gorgeous and the attentiveness of the staff just right. Customer service in some parts of Asia can be too cloying, too 'humble', but in Mauritius it's just right. The Oberoi rooms are wonderful. We had a Luxury Pavilion [I see that another reviewer disparagingly says this is nothing more than an ordinary room - but be assured, it is not like any ordinary room I've ever had elsewhere] : our own patio with sun loungers, a four-poster bed, plenty of seating space, elegant bathroom with sunken bath, and a separate room for our luggage. Lots of memorable touches, too. For instance, every day we received a collection of fresh fruit, presented on a dish with a piece of paper beneath containing some information about, say, apples, or oranges, or pears, or plums. The rooms are serviced twice a day. The Oberoi is perfect for discerning guests (like ourselves, naturally!). Whilst we were there they didn't put a foot wrong. I should add that I'm the Chairman of the Institute of Customer Service in the UK, and so am sensitive to service excellence, and service excellence is definitely what we received at the Oberoi - all the time, every day, and from everyone on the staff. My advice is: don't take any notice of some of the more negative reports elsewhere on this website! The above report was written by Dr Ted Johns (Odiham, Hampshire, UK)

Beautiful but boring

From a physical perspective, this is a sumptuous hotel in delightful grounds but being limited to a single restaurant, and so far away from civilisation, is not for everyone. Great as the gourmet food was, it gets a bit much for ten days in a row, and on one night we got a cab into town and bought the ingredients to make a picnic on our terrace. Made a trip into Grand Baie and had a reasonable Italian meal there one night, but I read somewhere that this place is supposed to be the San Tropez of Mauritius. Clearly written by someone who has never been to San Tropez! Grand Baie is, I'm afraid, pretty grim. Drinks in the hotel bar were overpriced, which meant that the bar was consistently deserted. Overall, the hotel lacks atmosphere. Would not return.

great hotel... great gardens... so-so location

The Oberoi hotel as a 5 star establishment cannot be faulted... The villa with a pool was beautiful and was spacious enough for us and our child (6 years)... any older though and you would probably have to book 2 adjoining rooms. The Pool and garden in our villa were stunning... a slate pool with verdant plants surrounding... total privacy and shielded from the wind which blew almost constantly for 5 of our 10 days. The hotel gardens were gorgeous and lush, awash with colour and tropical plants. The food and service were amazing.. and the small kids club was like an Enid Blyton adventure camp for 6 or 7 similar aged kids.. run by an amazing guy who was enthusiastic and seemed to really love his job. Although The Oberoi is more of a couples destination over the christmas break there were enough kids to make it really fun for them... and give us parents a chance to relax, sunbathe nude in our garden and eat amazing food. The hotel is small by Mauritian scales... but was still definately a " resort " with 2 pools and beautifully styled bar and dining area. The spa was good and you can take yoga and tai chai classes as well as tibetan humming and stargazing! Now to the downside... well really this has nothing to do with the Oberoi! It is the actual island of Mauritius! the beach was OK... nothing like the beautiful beaches of the Caribbean or Seychelles and the sea... well I can't really say much positive here! It was boring... the snorkiling was OK... nothing special and the pools were more inviting than the ocean which was rough and reminded me more of the English Channel! Go the the Oberoi for pampering, first class service, beautiful rooms, a great kids club and food. Do not go for the view (there is a hideous new Meridian Hotel built on the area of trees shown on all Oberoi brochures) or the location which is hemmed in between 4 other resorts.... Do not go for a tropical island beach... as Mauritius is both overdeveloped and does not have the beauty or ruggedness of other destinations.

Beautiful but now value for money

The Good - beautiful beach - very friendly non-intrusive staff - room service food (eg steak) was excellent - breakfast was fantastic (3 courses - eg fruit, bacon & eggs and finished off with banana pancakes) - our room was beautiful (2nd band from the top) - abundance of beach activities The Bad - during the complimentary meal we were offered 2 x glasses of champagne that turned out to be €16 each. We are not sure if it was intentional but it came across as deceitful - isolated - although taxis are cheap - the food in the restaraunt was good but not excellent. The reason I would only give it 3 * is not because it was an average hotel but I believe a rating should take into account the price of the room. Our room cost €800 / night and there is no way that the room we had was worth that amount of money. In fact we were actually upgraded so our " original " room would have been no way near worth that amount of money. Extra Notes: 1. Mauritius Airlines - is serves the absolute worst food I have ever eaten on any airline. 2. Mauritius Airport - has 1 small food shop that sells cold sandwiches and not much else. Based on points 1 & 2 eat before you check in and spend all your M currency before departing 3. The taxis from the hotel proved very honest and good value for money. It is not worth trying to save money by booking your own taxi BUT if you find a good driver / taxi and want to do a day-tour INSIST on that driver / taxi. We asked for a driver we had used before and the hotel said that we had to take the next driver on the rota who spoke not-great English and his car was below par. If the hotel won't let you book the driver you want then contact the driver yourself and arrange a private deal (we took every drivers details when we got in) 4. Grand Baie is a badly lit town and seems to be not much more than 4 restaraunts and a bunch of duty-free shops BUT there is a really good cajun seafood restaraunt (name forgotten) on the main corner. The restaraunt is on the T-intersection of the main road into town and the esplanade and over looks the water - but ask them to take it easy on the ENORMOUS seafood grill.

Honeymoon at the Oberoi

My wife and I spent a week at the Oberoi during our honeymoon in September 2003. The gounds were fantastic and the staff were the nicest we have ever encountered. The rooms are very nicely appointed and the pools are quiet and relaxing. Be sure to eat everything on the menu as the food from breakfast all the way through dinner is fantastic. We left the hotel one night for dinner and almost wished we didn't. Be sure to visit the spa as it is great and relaxing. One caveat, if ou need a plush sandy beach, the Oberoi is not the best place to be. The pools are great and you have access to the water for swimming and snorkeling, but the beach was rocky. We would still certainly go back.

Think twice

If you're reading this because you have booked a stay here, don't worry, there are positives to this hotel. The pools and beach are really nice, quiet and very clean, it's good for watersports, but we had a number of issues during our stay. We've been lucky enough to stay in 5+star accommodation on many other occasions but this just did not live up to it's rating, no matter how many times the staff reminded us of that fact. Our first room had a strong damp, musty, unclean smell, and we felt the staff were unfriendly, rude and on the verge of being argumentative when we raised our grievances - even with just a query we were made to feel as if we were complaining, when we were not - definitely not the way to be treated at a 5 star hotel. A few members of staff were nice, but overall, the customer service just did not feel sincere or genuine. We were moved to another room, in which the a / c broke, but it took 4 days of telling them about it for them to finally do something - again, we were made to feel in the wrong with the staff trying to fob us off. Eventually, they did help, which was welcomed, but it just took such an effort on our part to get to the stage where the staff did what, to be honest, is the minimum for a 5 star hotel. The menu didn't change whilst we were there and yes, as other guests have mentioned it is expensive, but the biggest thing was if you are a vegetarian or have any dietary requirements, the hotel didn't tell us this can be catered for - we didn't find out until the last day. All in all, this hotel just did not live up to the many other 5 stars we have stayed in. Maybe the absolute top end villas are nice, but the rest of this hotel needs to modernised and rooms updated, as it seemed tired and jaded. You won't have a terrible time here, but there must be better quality places to stay in Mauritius.

Mauritius Honeymoon

We just returned from our honeymoon. Since we moved around a bit, our game was to see what each hotel did for us as honeymooners. As indicated by the honeymooners in the other review, the hotel comped a couples massage and dinner on the beach. We did not receive an upgrade, and they were not at capacity. Our villa was closest to the spa, so there was more traffic outside our door than elsewhere on the resort. The room was immaculate and well serviced. We especially appreciated the honeymoon turndown which had flower petals all over the bed and a candlelit bubble bath one evening. Although no one met with us to discuss our beach dinner, we were able to order whatever we desired from the regular dinner menu, which was really nice. We expected a set menu, and were pleased to enjoy whatever we chose. Since the food was much more expensive at the hotel, having a free dinner thrown into the rate leveled things for us. We had appetizers in the $20-$30 USD range. The staff was very friendly and obliging. We had a dishonest bartender offer to let us pay him cash in American dollars " under the table " instead of our bar tab in Rupee one afternoon. We were surprised by that at this type of resort and felt pressured to comply since we saw him at the pool daily and wondered if we didn't if he would mess with our food or drinks. We also were surprised at the difference between a taxi and the hotel car. Don't let them insist on having their driver take you into town or the airport. Make them call a cheaper taxi. Also, don't allow the driver to wait since it bumps up the price. I had a bad experience with a waxing at the spa, but they waived the charge. The massage was decent. Don't expect much from getting your hair or nails done. It's not that fancy.

Excellence - again!

We have experienced a number of excellent hotels on Mauritius. The overall Oberoi experience first time round had us quickly booking up for a return visit in December 2011. A thoroughly relaxing break in beautiful surroundings, lovely rooms and excellent cuisine. The gardens at this time of year are gorgeous - a great credit to the hard working gardeners who tend them and we never see! The staff were very professional, friendly and helpful, prepared to chat and give you helpful tips on visits, yet recognising when you wanted to be left alone. Nothing was too much trouble. We requested a particular room this time if possible and were delighted that the staff were able to accomodate our wishes. The little touches of being welcomed back by staff by name is appreciated - demonstrating a committment to good customer relations. We thoroughly enjoyed the excellent guided tour round the grounds and the various other aspects to the 'sensing' programme. We hire a car and get out and about the island - something I would recommend others do. What the Oberoi offers for us is just what we are looking for in terms of rest, relaxation and battery re-charging in wonderful surroundings. We aim to return again later in the year!

Dreams becoming reality

Having been to the Banyan Tree (Maldives) last year my wife and I wanted to see if we could have an even better holiday this summer. The Banyan Tree was fantastic and the Oberoi has to be on the same par. Full thanks go to all the staff especially the manager Dhiren who was there to welcome us on arrival and had even arranged for us to have an upgrade to a deluxe villa with private gardens and pool. The room was magnificent and the bathroom out of this world. As with all the other reviews we do agree that the restaurant was slightly pricey but at the end of the day the food was fantastic and you pay for what you get - pure perfection. For a few nights they even asked us if we would like anything especially made and the resulting meals were outstanding. As an exercise we went to the Meriden next door for dinner one night and we hated the whole experience of being treated like cattle and the food was so poor. The bar was fantastic and the poolside restaurant serves some of the best wine and light meals. The weather in July isnt the best and so we didnt spend too much time on the beach but when we did the staff were extremely attentive. The resort also has a Spa run by the Banyan Tree which was almost as good as the ones run in the BT hotels. They also have a full sized gym and tennis courts. Somehow they found out it was our anniversary and on the last night they had filled our sunken bath with rose petals and oils. Great touch. In short a great experience thanks mainly to the staff. On our return we received a letter from the manager asking for feedback which we duly did. A week letter he replied thanking us for our comments and also informing us that two of the suggestions he had actually implemented - now thats customer service. Great vacation, great people - just go and do it.

Honeymoon heaven

After hectic wedding activity, we were looking for a relaxed honeymoon where we didn't feel like we had to do anything - but the options were there if we felt the need. The Oberoi matched those requirements prefectly. We chose this hotel after a fantastic experience at the Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra soon after it opened. For us the Oberoi Mauritius had the best location on the island - close to Port Louis and Grand Baie for venturing out. The Oberoi is understated luxury - simple but special. The rooms are set is amazing gardens, full of colour. We stayed in a Luxury Pavillion and were lucky enough to be at the far end of the resort so rarely saw anyone. We were planning on upgrading our room but after seeing the private villas with pool decided that we preferred our room - the wall around the villa made is feel very enclosed and you lost the sea view. In our room you could lay in bed and watch the sea - what a prefect way to wake up! The pools are masterpieces of design and always seemed empty so great places to cool down and relax. Theres lots of watersports free of charge. All our good intentions of trying these got lost in sleep and sun lounging! The spa offered good treatments but needed to be booked well in advance. Staff at the hotel were incredibly friendly. From the first day everyone seemed to remember our names and were there to offer advice or just chat - if you wanted to. Overall the hotel service was slightly sporadic - sometimes very efficient - sometimes needed reminding. The food in the restaurant was undeniably good, as was the couple of times we had private dining in our room, the attention to detail was great. However, it would have been good to have more choice in the evening. There is only one restaurant and it is fine dining. The alternative was to get a taxi out and through this we discovered some fantastic restaurants (indian / chinese / seafood) and the hotel are happy to advise. Your taxi driver is yours for the night so you have total flexibility on where you go and times. Hassle free and fun to explore. Definately recommend this. We hired a car for the day and drove round most of the island - it really isn't that big. They drive on the same side as the UK, but you have to watch out for bad drivers and stray things suddenly appearing the road - dogs, scooters, granny.. One tip - take your own music / cds - you can borrow dvds but not music. We have travelled a lot and stayed at some amazing hotels - and the Oberoi Maurtius is up there amongst the top for overall experience. A fantastic honeymoon - and a great holiday location. Definately somewhere that everyone should experience at least once! :-) Mr & Mrs B, Berkshire, UK

Just amazing.

I should declare up front that I have a bias as we got married there. I say that as that could potentially make us more likely to overlook the negatives but, put frankly, I enjoy complaining. Even then, this was just the most amazing resort. There are small negatives which I will come to but these are just complete 'postscripts' and didn't take away from things at all. People obviously want different things from their holiday and our top priorities were relaxation and good food. It met what we wanted perfectly. Firstly, the positives: FOOD! - Breakfast is incredible. It is the first hotel I've stayed in where breakfast is really a relaxing affair. There is a small buffet of breads and juices and meats / cheeses, etc. However, the real star is that there is a fantastic menu of freshly prepared treats: pancakes, waffles (amazing!), and the usual bacon and eggs, etc, as well as Mauritian fare too. I've never had a three course breakfast but here made it a daily ritual. - Lunch is also good. We were on half board so this wasn't included. As other reviews have said, it is expensive but I found that it was still good value if that makes sense. For example, it normally cost us around £10-£15 each for lunch for, say, a freshly prepared spicy prawn salad type thing. These were delicious, good quality and also is in a proper restaurant with table service and nice bread on the side, etc, so we didn't feel short-changed at all. Obviously though it can add up, which is something to be wary of. - Dinner. We went to On the Rocks a couple of times which is beautiful and romantic and has a simpler barbecued menu, made right next to the sea. Beautiful sea food and, surprisingly, a lovely meat platter too. The main restaurant is also lovely. I am going to be honest and say it isn't a mind-blowing 3-Michelin starred standard but I wouldn't want that for an entire week. It is however a mix of inventive and traditional dishes beautifully cooked and served, with a nudge towards local recipes, definitely worth 1 star as it was so consistently tasty. For example, a beautiful lamb shank cooked with rum and onions, or a kind of lightly smoked scallops (I think...?) - we loved it all. And dessert... don't even get me started on how nice the pistachio ice cream was. - We both liked the layout of the pools and beach. Others have commented on the beach not being perfect but, again, for us it was lovely. The pools were infinity pools so you could look out over the sea from the them, or hop back and forth from the beach, with ample sun-loungers available at each and towels always quickly available - the villa was absolutely incredible. We were lucky enough to have a pool villa and it was just stunning. It was cleaned quickly and efficiently (they got to know what kind of time we would be out, so they could clean it, turn down service was nice) and also well thought out. A lovely outdoor terrace to eat at, a couple of sun loungers, a massive bathroom and beautiful sunken bath, a proper coffee machine, etc. Negatives (mostly really tiny things) - Obviously it is very expensive. It is worth it but, hey, it isn't nice to not be able to afford to go back for so long! - Perhaps a couple of evening activities could be more than once a week e. g. star-gazing could be more than once a week as we missed it and would have loved to have done it. - I could see how some people wouldn't be happy with the sea as there is a lot of dead coral underneath it, but we just bought cheap diving shoes and it wasn't a problem for us at all. WEDDING (just in case anyone else is looking at this hotel for that) : - Do it. We had a beautiful private ceremony on their quiet beach followed by a lovely candelit dinner on the beach and a Mauritian feast. We were made to feel really looked after and relaxed, my wife had a wonderful day getting ready in the spa, the cake the hotel made was beautiful, and it was just a brilliant day. I could go on forever but I better wrap up the positives by saying that it is the ambience of the place that makes it a winner. The staff seem to have real pride in what they do. Obviously I don't know if they are paid more or just given more ownership and freedom over it, but they really make the difference and what could seem like a gimmick at another hotel just seems genuine here: staff say hello and remember your name, they can't get over quick enough if you need a towel on a beach chair, they will happily make sure you leave dinner completely full, they will clean your sunglasses by the pool (!) : it goes on and on... this sounds all invasive but I should say that they are also quite happy to just let you get on with it and we didn't feel like it was in-your-face at any time. The hotel also offers free activities as part of their 'Senses' programme. Things like star-gazing, or wine tasting, etc. I know the hotel is expensive but we've stayed at other 5 star hotels that charge for things like this and here they are offered free and delivered really nicely. We watched the chef cook a fish curry and then we all sat down to eat it for lunch and it completely filled us up and was free. Another time, at wine-tasting Baboo wanted us to try a wine with some salted chocolate that he couldn't find so he hunted us down at dinner that evening and gave us a glass of dessert wine just so we could try the chocolate he had found. Just a couple of examples. Too often you go on holiday and spend a lot of money on a hotel and then everything ends up costing so much when you're there that you resent it. Go half-board and enjoy the 'Senses' activities and the ambience and you will just feel spoiled and not regret it.

Perfect Honeymoon - Faultless

After a busy and stressful time leading up to the wedding this was a PERFECT HONEYMOON!. Thanks to Ultimate honeymoons for their help in recommending such a fantatsic hotel and country. As particularly 'difficult' guests we were a little apprehensive if the Oberoi could indeed cater for all our needs. As a couple with fatal food allergies to all nuts, eggs, sesame we are obviously a little apprehensive to eat anywhere other than our home. The Oberoi however put our mind at rest from the moment we got there. It appeared every member of staff had been briefed. On arrival the food manager met with us to assure us preperation would be done in a seperate part of the kitchen. As for the food it is spectacular. We went on a HB basis which is definately more economical if you are likely to want 3 courses each night. We ate half the time in our room and half in the restaurant. Either way the service was spot on. It is nice to be able to come in from the beach or a massage, indulge in your sunken bath (with lights dimmed and music in the bathroom) then put on robes and slippers and be served food in your room watching something from their large collection of dvds. Breakfast could also be served in the room but would recommend it to be taken in the restaurant as there is a bigger selection - the banana pancakes are great and for my partner they were happy to make pastries without any eggs / nuts each morning. Feel free to request something NOT on the menu for lunch or dinner. With a bit of notice they were happy to create a carbonara or seafood salad ! The rooms are beautiful. We were in a pavillion and had a beautiful view. Lying from our bed we could see the sea and mountains. we were pleased we had not upgraded as we would not have got this. As for privacy we rarerly saw anyone. In fact you see more staff than visitors, it never feels busy. This is however a place for couples and definately NOT for children The complex itself is utterly stunning. Both pools are quiet freshwater pools with lovely features. The beaches are neatly kept and never feel busy. The water is calm and beautiful. The beach boys are always on hand with water and to help move those sunbeds. The restaturant is laid out beautifully with water around and is so tranquil at night with the lights. The night lights and flames around the complex at night are indeed very romantic and dinner on the beach should be done at least once (however pretty expensive at and extra £80) We would recommend in taking advantage of the complimentary activities. the painting class was womderfuly therapeutic as is the sound meditation. There is also sculpture, nature walks, tai chi. As for the spa the couples oberoi massage is pure bliss. They are also happy to arrange private classes of yoga, meditation or breathing excercises for you. As for the service it is the best we have ever encountered anywhere in the world. It was like they had read our minds on many occasions. Not only is the service faultless but they are genuinely friendly and keen to chat so the environment is not stuffy. Deep sea fishing is a popular pasttime. This is not for those with any form of motion sickness even on a calm day. Otherwise its a great experience. I would highly recommend however a visit to Le Morne to swim with dolphins- it is a must and the beach is absolutely fantastic- the nearby lagoon is like water in Maldives. We organised a car drive to Le Morne then out on the boat all morning. We swm with 7 dolphins (within touching distance) for over 2 hours. This is extremently exhilarating and dont be put off if you cant swim- float jackets are available. We booked through Solis (only £120 for both of us) for a once in a lifetime opportunity. MUST BE DONE. As for the weather it was very comfortable. Warm enough to sunbathe and cooler at night (need cardi). Lovely time of year. About 27 degrees and no mosquito bites! Really cannot recommend the Oberoi highly enough especially as a honeymoon or anniversary. They make you feel special from the start and the tranquil environment could not be more relaxing.

Seeing things, make up your own mind

I chose to take my fiancee to The Oberoi and we were both glad we did. The Oberoi describes itself proudly as the only 6* hotel on the Island. Its a place detached from the reality of life and dedicated to us jaded europeans facing months of greyness and cold. In this respect it scores a mighty 5 for sheer beauty, brightness of colour and peace of mind. The hotel is set out like a lost Mayan village with a 60ft waterfall, a lake of huge golden carp and strange mythical stone creatures. Private Villas and Pavillions are hidden away inside a landscape of flowering bushes, palms, and grasses. You are unlikely to ever meet more than 1 or 2 loving couples wandering lost in the impossibly beautiful grounds. We had a beautiful Pavillion looking out over gardens full of flowers. A huge 4 poster bed in a room of maybe 500 sq ft full of hardwoods, creamy fabrics and glass - total luxury no quibble! You want the best then here it is and yes the patio does have ants just like at home but they are really tiny critters, who dont mind us sharing their garden at all. The restaurant is again set out like a Mayan Longhouse with bamboo blinds for walls, which maybe get used during a monsoon? Otherwise, you sit staring across the surrounding moat, towards the sea which is maybe 100yds across the the white sand. Some guests have their meals on the beach eating by lantern light. Theres no hurry, no noise, nothing but you and your partner. The meals are beautifully prepared and if its not immediately on the menu, the chef will cook you something special. If you're kept waiting, you might just receive a complimentary glas of Krugg to muse over. It has to be said this hotel prides itsef on keeping the peace, so if you want the pulse to race ever so slightly faster, you should go to the Gym. " Tim of the Gym " will train you sensibly, on really state of the art equipment. Yes, even machines come with built in air conditioning!! In a week, we spent about £500 on wine beer and mineral water. Taking half board is really the best option, given that restaurant prices are 6* high and it might be easy to get an upset stomach when settling the bill. Finally, we also used the Spa, receiving several massages both head and full body lying next to each other quietly, with incense burning. Well, I imagine that this treatment works on several levels and we deffinetly unwound, as we began to picture things through the " third eye ". Now where did I leave that thing now? Go there, try it and see for yourself maybe?!

You will want to stay forever

My husband and I have been lucky enough to have stayed in 4 Oberoi hotels previously but only for short periods when we have been touring in India. As we wanted to have the Oberoi experience for a longer period of time we chose this hotel for our 20th wedding anniversary. From the moment we were welcomed with a 'Happy Anniversary' to the moment we were waved off by a number of staff it was truly magical. The property is gorgeous. Our first room was 511 which was a Pavillion. It was light and airy with its own little terrace complete with sun beds and table and chairs for private dining. It had stunning views and easy access to the adults only pool. When we arrived we had a cake, wine, balloons, flowers, a card and towelling swans! We couldn't have been made to feel more special. Our second room was 302 directly opposite the spa and was a villa. It was slightly larger but the most impressive thing was the large private walled garden. What was also impressive was the way in which the staff moved our belongings. In the wink of an eye it was done and everything was laid out exactly as it had been in our old room. What stays with me about this place is the fragrance both from the wonderful gardens and the oils which were burning everywhere. Everything here seems so seamless but I am sure takes an enormous amount of effort and organisation. Do take the walk around the gardens with the botanist, visit the Botanical Gardens where they actually have lotus flowers in bloom and if you can go to the races. That is so much fun. The food at the hotel is fabulous and the chef is always visible and happy to discuss special dishes he can make for you. One night at his suggestion we had prawn and avocado risotto! And then there is the staff. There are no words to describe how wonderful they all are lead of course by the incredibly stylish Mr Marc Denton. We named all those we came into contact with in our hotel comments form but really it is impossible to heap enough praise on this team. From front of house, the boys who look after your rooms, the staff on the beach, those in the dining rooms and the gardeners no one passes you without speaking. This place truly is paradise on earth (and don't miss out on the spa either!) Would love to return but so many more Oberois to try and not enough time.

Doesn't get better and with kids!

The reviews here are accurate so I'm not gonna repeat. Excellent service etc, it's all true, can't rave enough about this place.... I want to give you a few tid bits about travelling with a family. if your kids are well travelled and well behaved, you will love this place. The staff could not do enough for us, we have a 3 and 6 year old. Whilst we were there there was one baby and one other 3 yr old boy, we all made friends!! And we didn't disturb the honeymooners as there was enough space / privacy to get away when we had too. And to be honest we had lovely people during our visit. Anyway, a few pointers for parents: 1. Upon arrival the kids (and us) were greeted by name with a handshake, taken to the lovely pre reception place by the waterfall for virgin mohitos, as soon as the kids were bored, we were on our way to our room for checking in... Didn't see the bags until our room, and had a nice little ride in the buggy! No reception thing, much appreciated after a long flight. 2. Mini robes and mini (very cute) slippers awaited for the kids. 3. Every day at the beach, the guys brought down sand / sea toys, every single day. 4. The restaurant was great, the kids sometimes wanted something very simple and got it. There is a kids menu which is fine, but hey, if you want rice / cucumber / peas (as mine did) - no problem. 5. Every day, the beach guys greeted the kids and never got impatient, they were just amazing. 6. We stayed in the most basic of rooms with the 2 kids in our very large room, with made up sofa beds. This worked fine, the room is large and the beds are comfy.... The sea views were great. To be honest we didn't want the worry of the pool villa with the kiddies 7. there is a kids club / coordinator!!!!! Something we hadn't realised. Sohwannee was great and came to see what the kids were up to every morning. She took them to the local aquarium, henna tattoo painting, and a learn to paint class - get this, all included if your child is over 4. If under 4 you need an adult to supervise for which you need to pay an entrance fee to the aquarium. The hotel classes / activities are free for everyone. 8. We hired a babysitter twice and she was lovely and worked with Sohwannee well. our kids loved the sitter, who played 'discos' and ordered them snacks when they got hungry, all appreciated by us. Of course she would of done what you asked. The kids club thing has great painting / games etc facilities and we came back from our dive to find the kids as happy as larry with Sohwannee and the sitter there with them, I had to leave the husband there closing the playroom door whilst I went for a treatment!!!! OK I could rave on forever, this place is heaven with or without kids. best place I've been to in a while, and there's much more I could say which I shouldn't as to be honest I felt like we were being favoured, We no doubt were not but that's how special this place was. go, don't hesitate. We're going back for sure, my. Daughter and I want to live there....

Fabulous wedding, holiday and honeymoon

I have just returned from 2 weeks at 'the Oberoi' Mauritius and we did not want to come home. The hotel is a perfect peaceful getaway and is a little piece of heaven on earth. We went to the oberoi to get married and we couldn't have picked a better venue. The hotel is so well planned that it is private and quiet and perfect for couples. It is a class above any other big hotels as it never felt overcrowded or busy. We had booked a private villa wth garden and we got this for the first week but then we were upgraded to a villa with private pool for the second week and it was out of this world. The private garden was excellent for privacy and your own space but the private pool just made it perfect. It was even heated so night swims under the stars were just idyllic. The hotel remembers little details about their guests which just proves it is a class above anywhere else. I had my birthday whilst out there and all the staff I met wished me happy birthday. I also got delivered a lovely flower arrangement, birthday card and then in the restaurant that evening the band played happy birthday and they delivered a free chocolate mousse cake. It was such a lovely gesture and really made a difference to my day. We got married in the second week and Deepa the Customer relations manager arranged everything to perfection. She was so organised and only one word to her and it was done. The beach cove where we chose to get married was perfect for anyone wanting a sandy patch of beach with perfect blue sea behind them. Again all the staff knew it was our wedding day and wished us congratulations. We were given a second room to use for the groom on the day and everything went to plan. The photographers were excellent and good fun. The meal in the restaurant was gorgeous and then they prepared a candle lit bubblebath and rose petal bath for us in our room. You couldn't ask for more from a hotel. Yes, it is pricey but it is worth it. If you want a good deal like all inclusive then go to one of the other big hotels with hundreds of rooms and feel like you are one of several hundred visitors. If you want to feel individual then go to the Oberoi and feel special. The spa was excellent too. As part of the wedding package you get an hour treament for the bride and groom and as my groom didn't want his treatment it meant I got 2 hours for free! The ylang ylang aroma body massage is to die for. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who appreciates quality rather than quantity.

One of the best hotels in the world

Myself and my wife stayed at The Oberoi in Mauritius in November and cannot speak highly enough about the place. If you want a luxurious, relaxing holiday, where your every whim is catered for, then this is the place for you. The food, the service, the beach, the pools, the villas, the spa, the staff - all are 5* plus. We took the hotel car, with private chauffeur to Grand Baie to an incredible fish restaurant (Cafe De La Plage) which came recommended from the Hotel's Concierge. Wow! The only problem with staying at The Oberoi in Mauritius is that it sets a standard that could be rather difficult to beat. Admittedly, there will be hotels in the world that will match or even exceed our experience of The Oberoi, but it does show a lot of other 5* hotels how it's done ! The reviewer from Chicago who only awarded a 3 / 5 rating puzzles me slightly. Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have never stayed anywhere in the world (yet) that provides such a high level of service AND attention to detail. If they only awarded the Oberoi 3 / 5, I would be fascinated to see what they think is a 5 / 5 hotel. Writing that the hotel insisted on where they had dinner is the same as saying that they had no choice, or were forced into where they ate. As mentioned above, the hotel recommended several restaurants to us and we took them up on their recommendation, but I could not imagine them insisting on where we had dinner. They are incredibly friendly, helpful and polite. The Oberoi's strap line of Luxury. Redefined. was not only a flash of marketing inspiration but is without doubt the best and only way to describe this incredible, incredible hotel.

Bref on sent l'amateurisme à plein nez. Disappointing

We stayed at the Oberoi for the first week of our honeymoon. We had high hopes after reading so many good reviews on tripadvisor, but unfortunately we felt a bit let down. We've stayed at many 5 star hotels all over the world, and my wife and I are very easygoing but several issues left us feeling annoyed and frustrated. Firstly the good points: the hotel grounds and reception are fantastic and very well maintained. The whole site is very clean and tidy. Our room was exceptionally clean (if a little smaller than we had expected). The bathroom was great, with a sunken bath and almost outdoor shower. The turn-down service was very good. The beaches were good, very clean and with very efficient service, bringing cold towels, water and fruit on demand. The reception staff were efficient - they resolved a problem related to our travel agent quickly and effectively. The gym and the spa were excellent - my wife reckons the oberoi facial was the best she's ever had. Now, the things that were less good. The hotel obviously has a policy for the staff to smile and say hello to all the guests they meet. It was irritating to us both that even when we were together, my wife was always completely ignored by the staff - they would always say " Hello Sir " to me, and direct all conversation to me, even when she was asking the questions! The main restaurant was also disappointing. We don't mind paying for good food and good service where we feel it is warranted. Although the food was of good quality, we felt the service fell short of the prices charged. I don't expect to have to ask twice for anything during a meal costing £100 a head. This lack of attention to detail was a consistent theme during our evening dining experiences. We had a meal at the nearby Le Meridian hotel and experienced better service and a cheaper meal. The weather during the first few days was not brilliant (obviously not the hotel's fault). We decided to explore the island. The hotel's concierge outlined a series of car tours. They offered the same tour either with a new Toyota or new BMW for 90 or 250 euros respectively. When we decided to go for the 90 euro option, we were then subjected to a barrage of " hard sell " which culminated in the concierge asking what cars we drive at home, as if a trip in BMW would be some sort of special treat for us! Very patronising. They were also very reluctant to book us a table at any other hotel for dinner, and would not give me the phone numbers of any nearby 5 star hotels. I ended up getting these from the internet myself. Very poor. We also felt that as the weather was bad, the hotel could have been proactive and increased the number of activites (for example cookery classes or gym classes that were scheduled once a week) as most guests were holed up in their rooms. We went on from the Oberoi to Le Touessrok, which was an amazing experience and truly a 5 star hotel. We felt that the Oberoi did not compare to Le Touessrok or any of the other 5 star hotels we have stayed in in other parts of the world. We wished that we had stayed at Le Touessrok for the whole trip as the location, food and service there were exceptional. All in all, a bit of a let-down. We would definately go back to Mauritius, but we won't be staying here.

Still room for improvement

Having heard so many wonderful things about the Oberoi, we arrived with rather high expectations. The hotel itself architecturally is interesting, although greatly resembling Balinese villas. We personally would have prefered to have viewed this in Bali and not Mauritius. The actual rooms are pretty but rather small, and end up in a patio overlooking lawns and gardens which, are exposed to everyone passing by. Please ensure your blinds are drawn during the evening. The food is of a higher standard than what else the hotel has to offer, and definetely worth going there on an HB basis otherwise be prepared to pay a fortune. It can get rather boring as the menu is not drastically changeable and after a week one might have difficulty choosing a dish. The quality of the food however, is great. The pools are beautiful and the beach is better than expected. Despite reports claiming it is not a nice beach, we found it to be very clean, very neat and the water is clear, not hazy like elsewhere! The water sports staff are indeed very helpful! The Oberoi still has plenty of room for service improvement and staff handling the guests need to become more proffessional. At a hotel of this standard one wants to be aided at the beach with a sunbed and towels. This is not the case, as we had to run every morning before breakfast, reserve the sunbeds we found to be free, and place towels and fix them all by ourselves. Not very nice having to chase a sunbed. Otheriwise it is a very chill out ambience hotel and suitable for those who seek this type of a break. Lastly be careful with your valuables as anything might go missing and the hotel brings no responsibility to this. Everything must be locked in the safe and you must be on edge always that nothing can be left lying about unattended! A serious setback.

You will make your way! Danke!

Beautiful hotel

The Oberoi is everything you expect of a top quality luxury hotel - beautiful grounds, professional service, great swimming pools, spa, fitness, watersport facilities, good ambiance and great food. The accommodation (we stayed in a deluxe room) is fine but not exceptional, but those who stayed in the villas (next grade up) raved about them. It's also got a lovely calm atmosphere; you won't find the usual after-dinner shows, loud bars or 'exercise-to-music' sessions in the pool. Small gripes were that you had to pay quite a bit of money for internet access (whereas in many cheaper hotels you get it free) ; and secondly, the menus were not varied enough throughout the week (especially lunchtime). It's true that the food is very expensive, but the quality and atmosphere is fantastic. I understand however that they will be trying out a second, more casual restaurant in December. On the whole, there was little to fault it - except that there's nothing that really differentiates it from any other hotel of this calibre. Did we enjoy the hotel? Yes. Would we rave about the hotel? No. Did we feel that it was really special? No. I guess when you're spending so much money on a holiday, you want the answer to all 3 questions to be 'yes'. As an aside, any visitor to Mauritius should be prepared for the sad condition of the numerous stray dogs that wonder along the beaches. For those who would like to help, there is a wonderful organisation called pawsmauritius which is trying to improve the welfare of these animals. They always welcome any interest from visitors to the island.

Complete Luxury

My Husband and I stayed at the Oberoi at the end of September 2007 we booked through Trailfinders in Cambridge Jan looked after us and she was fantastic she took care of everything for us. We simply turned up to the most incredible place we've ever seen, and were treated like royalty the whole time we were there. The Oberoi can only be described as faultless. I'm amazed anyone can write negative reviews about the Oberoi there really is nothing negative to say about this hotel. From start to finish, the attention to detail at the hotel, the levels of service and the standards of facilities and staff were perfect. The hotel was at full capacity when we were there but you would never know it. We stayed half board recommended by trailfinders and we would definitely recommend H / B, The quality of food was excellent. I think it's the best we've ever eaten. The half board option was definitely worth it. Drinks are not cheap but this is a 5* Luxury Hotel with 5* Luxury service at all times. We did go to one of the other hotels one evening and the drinks were cheaper and even though the other hotel was lovely it didn't compare to the Oberoi. This was our honeymoon and for that reason we wanted the very best, if you're looking for something very special or a holiday never to be forgotten why worry about the price of drinks just enjoy the luxury of the Oberoi. The beach boys at both pools and the beaches were excellent especially Vinnie who looked after the beach below the main bar and was always very friendly and attentive; bringing us iced water, and fruit, it was also very nice that most water sports, including water skiing, were free. We stayed in a Luxury Pavilion and it was wonderful, they even upgraded us to a villa with a private pool for no extra cost for the last 3 days of our stay. Usually they upgrade you if your on honeymoon to the next level accommodation; if they have availability, which for us would have been a villa with a garden, but as they were full when we arrived they upgraded us two levels as soon as they had a villa free. Villa 203 unlike some villa's we had the most amazing view of the sea. Both the Luxury Pavilion and Luxury villas are amazing with sunken marble baths, wonderful!! From a luxury Pavilion to a villa with pool the accommodation were pretty much identical. Our second villa did have slightly more room but there wasn't too much in it, just shows that the Oberoi believe in Luxury for every guest but the private pool and garden was really special. This is a really romantic, relaxing, stunning resort. If you are looking for the perfect hideaway and just want to completely unwind then this is the right place. It is absolutely incredible and we couldn't recommend it more.

Perfect quiet get-away for relaxation

Spent hours selecting a relaxing get away to Mauritius and finally picked the Oberoi, despite some bad reviews. This is the perfect relaxing get away if you are in a couple, want to eat good food, receive excellent service, stay in a smaller boutique hotel and a part from sunbathe, eat and use the water sport facilities, not do much. Excellent service, they knew us by name and couldn't fault them. We stayed in the standard room without the private pool and it was lovely - great views over the sea and superb amenities. Restaurant and food was superb - we've eaten in lots of top restaurants and we again couldn't really fault the food. Lots of variety - and some good local dishes (which I wanted). Swimming pools and beach are lovely - there is a quieter pool area which was almost deserted and the beach is a lot smaller than some of the hotels if you walk around the corner, but better groomed and plenty of room. Free use of boats, water skiing, snorkelling, glass bottom boat etc - boat boys really good and were there straight away in their motor boat when we pitch poled our Ccat in a sudden high wind!! This is an expensive trip - drinks are pricey (£10 + VAT for a glass of wine), but you get free water on the beach and Mauritius is not a cheap destination - go with this in mind and you won't be shocked. We did eat out in Grand Baie a couple of nights and ate a lot of fish - food was OK - not amazing but a lot cheaper and good local fare. We did get sent to a 'fine dining' fish restaurant that was recommened by the hotel on our first excursion out - very expensive and probably wasn't really our 'cup of tea' but if you want fancy fish and silver service then worth a try! Ate at one of the local Curry Houses though and had an excellent curry - better than the hotel. You are stuck out a bit on a limb - you have to book a taxi through the hotel and this is about £20 to take you there and back to Grand Baie which can be more than the meal - so you need to weigh up if you're happy to stay onsite. Overall though - I thought the Oberoi was excellent, we didn't want a large sprawling hotel with lots of children and we felt looked after and thought the setting was lovely. Walked along the whole of the beach either way from our hotel and looked at all the other hotels and definitely happiest with our choice - would definitely go back or try an Oberoi else where.

Fantastic hotel - faultless holiday

My boyfriend and I have returned from a couple of weeks at the Oberoi that can only be described as faultless. From start to finish, the attention to detail at the hotel, the levels of service and the standards of facilities and staff were perfect. The hotel is very cleverly designed to give a feeling of privacy and peace and quiet. Even towards the end of our stay, when the hotel was at nearly full capacity, it still feels like a hide away where you are more likely to see a member of staff than another guest. The rooms have a real 'wow' factor, especially the sunken marble baths and gardens outside the shower. The restaurant was fantastic, but too heavy (and expensive!) to eat at every night. This didn't matter at all, because the ever-helpful staff were very keen to make recommendations of local restaurants and would also organise hotel taxis, who wait for you while you have your meal or pick you up later. The local area, especially Grand Bai, is certainly worth a visit and has some great restaurants and bars. The pool restaurant, open at lunchtimes, was also good, although the fairly limited menu did get a bit repetitive in the second week. The beach boys at both pools and the beach were excellent, bringing us iced water, fruit and cold towels. It was also a very nice touch that most watersports, including water skiing, were free. The only other thing to say is that this is NOT a hotel to bring children to. As well as the slightly un-child friendly design of the place (which is stunning for those who haven't brought children with them!), there is nothing at all for them to do. A couple of other guests had children of about 7 or 8 years old, who quickly became bored and pestered other guests and the staff. Firstly, no one goes on holiday to look after other peoples bored children and secondly, while the staff were great and did their best to amuse the fed-up kids, this meant they were unable to properly do their actual job, so drinks orders etc took longer to arrive. While Mauritius is a lovely family-friendly place, there are other hotels that cater for children but the Oberoi is not one of them. The saving grace was that one of the two pools is designated a child-free zone, so you can have some peace from other peoples marauding brats! But otherwise, one of the best hotels either of us have stayed at

Proposal in paradise

Having visited this wonderful hotel in January 2012, I could not think of a lovelier place to pop the question to my partner. So here we are, day two of a ten day stay, now engaged and loving this perfect location to celebrate. Lovely, perfect, quiet, understated and I have to get dressed for dinner now!

Not worth the price, but a beautiful hotel

The hotel property itself is beautiful with only 76 rooms and a staff of about 250, but it is somewhat remote so we mainly just stayed on site. Unfortunately, we had issues from the time we arrived. First, despite several calls from our agent to the property to arrange a taxi and advising them that there were 4 adults arriving with baggage they sent a small car that didn't have enough space so we had to spend the 1 hour ride to the hotel with bags on laps and under feet. I wanted to surprise my wife with a romantic private dinner on the beach (there is setup surcharge to arrange this), so I met privately with the assistant manager, who spent about 30 minutes showing me the various menus for a few of the nights- quite impressive. I selected the menu, the time and day, and the place on the beach. I was excited to surprise my wife, but when we got there they had no reservation and nothing set up, which was disappointing and embarrassing. When you go to a hotel of this supposed caliber you expect to not have to deal with these kinds of mistakes. When we walked to some of the other nearby properties it appeared that there were some very competitive other properties that may be worth considering.

great holiday

My wife and I have just returned from a marvellous holiday at the Oberoi Mauritius. We were made welcome right from the first moment we stepped into the hotel until the moment we left. All the staff quickly knew our names and all staff were solicitous, kindly and charming always ever helpful. As to not being allowed out (previous review) we were offered the hotel car and given a list of restaurants and bars where we could go. The best value was The Bell at Grand Baie, with the Cafe On the Beach and The Capitaine at either Port Louis or Grand Baie excellent as was the Labourdonnais Hotel in Port Louis. It was really a marvellous holiday made all the better by the attentive staff. By the way make sure you take the FREE nature walk on the Sunday morning, it was close to heaven but as hot as the other place. Thank you Oberoi

Building works started next door

We have just come back from a 2 week stay at Oberoi. We had a great time, the hotel and staff were brilliant. As previous reviewers have said, the restaurant is very pricey but great food. We found the drinks to be over priced as well even comparing to other 5* Hotels. 2 Days before we were due to leave, Building Works started next door. The noise started at 7.30 am and went on until about 4.30pm. You could hear the noise even on the beach. There was nothing the hotel could do but I would not of been so understanding if I had just arrived. I hope they are informing people before you book. They were building Flats and only just started so I would imagine they will be continuing for some time.

Stunningly good service which constantly exceeded expectations

We have just returned from a week's stay at this hotel and it was absolutely fantastic. Beautiful rooms, amazing bathrooms, superb service, gorgeous grounds and setting, fabulous food, stunning bar, luxurious pool, great watersports, excellent childcare, the list is endless. Yes, it's expensive but that doesn't stop it providing value for money. The service on every count was exceptional - nothing was too much trouble and with lots of little, unexpected treats, from 'amuse bouche' cocktails when having a pre-dinner drink to welcome and farewell gifts for the children all made for an unforgettable experience. We stayed with our 3 children, 8, 11 and 14. Whilst they were the only children there, we were made to feel very welcome and they received masses of attention from the staff. There is a very beautiful adults only pool so our children were able to enjoy the main pool without worrying that we were disturbing other people. Very good childcare was available when we needed it and included trips outside of the hotel. A wide range of activities was also on offer from stargazing to cooking to henna painting, to bike hire at no additional charge. The general manager, Marc Denton, was very visible but in no way obtrusive - he and his staff are exceptional in their genuine desire to ensure that all guests have an unforgettable experience which we certainly did. A huge thank you to him and his team.

Amazing Service and wonderful hotel

We loved our stay as a family at the Oberoi Mauritius in August 2013. My husband and I have travelled a lot for business and holidays around the globe but nowhere have we ever encountered such an amazing and personable service. The Oberoi is really in a class of its own. Staff make you feel so welcome, everybody greets you with a smile and many remember your name after a few days. The lady who runs the kinds club (Suchani) greeted our daughter every morning, explained the activities for the day and asked her if they wanted to join in. She would also bring her back to us after the sessions were finished so we did not even have to collect her. All very effortlessly done which made us feel extremely relaxed. The hotel manager personally attended to us on several occasions and when we left after our wonderful stay the manager (Mr Denton) and 3 other members of staff were present to wave good buy. After we had returned home we received a letter from Mr Denton who thanked us again for our stay and the tips we had left for the staff and he confirmed that our positive mentioning of the names of several staff members in the Oberoi statisfaction survey had been passed on to them and thanked us on their behalf. Where else do you get this? So in our view the service alone is worth experiencing this amazing hotel! Apart from that we also loved our pavillion room which was spacious and beautifully furnished and kept very clean. The Pavillion rooms are of a sufficient size to fit in a child as well. The main swimming pool is so pretty with all the traditional sculptures and the uniquely designed showers. The beach is a bit on the small side with some rocks but still nice enough for a pleasant beach holiday. The food is not Michelin Star quality but very good and served in beautiful surroundings. We very much liked the bar and the drinks are excellent. We will surely be back and try some of the Oberoi hotels in India which are said to be equally amazing!

Absolute Serenity

After looking at numerous hotels in Mauritius, my husband and I decided on the The Oberoi, Mauritius, and it was a wonderful decision. First of all, the hotel is not large as compared to others on the island. Because of this, the hotel has a feeling of exclusivity, quiet and comfort. From the moment we exited our car from the airport, we were greeted warmly, and that warmth continued to grow over the course of 8 days. The grounds are FLAWLESS, and the rooms are STUNNING. We rented one of the private bungalows with a pool, and it was positively lovely inside and out. Beautiful design. Above all, however, was the customer service. Our visit truly felt " customized " in that every staff member knew our names, our room number, and the fact that I was largely a vegetarian. So, every night -- whether I had the same waiter or not -- I was always given the vegetarian menu with lots of choices. Another reviewer indicated that the restaurant did not have a lot of vegetarian picks. I completely disagree. Mind you, I am generally vegetarian (not 100% vegan) so I can't testify to options for pure vegans, but if you are largely vegetarian centered, you will have many, many holistic choices on the menu every night. On that note, the food FAR exceeding our wildest dreams. The chef's creations were creative, memorable, and we really looked forward to our dining " experience " every evening. Likewise, the mixed drinks served at The Oberoi were really note worthy. Some of the best cocktails I have EVER had were served by their bar team. To that end, I give a nod to the homemade lemonades, bloody marys, and mojitos. The Oberoi spa is also something worth mentioning. I've been at the top spas in New York and around the world, and this one really stands out. Incredible design and excellent service. My massage was one of the best I have ever received. As for its location on the island, it is closer to Port Louis so you can see some large cargo boat traffic in the distance when sitting on the hotel's beach, but it is not constant. More so, it's location makes Port Louis an easy destination for shopping and exploring historical buildings. I also understand that at this time of the year, the location of the hotel is drier than other parts of the island. That was definitely true as the island has varying microclimates so some parts of the island seemed to be covered in rain all the time -- with other parts fully sunny. Fortunately, we were on the sunny side. In summary, if you are looking for quiet, serenity, beauty, exceptional dining, a top tier holistic spa, and a customized vacation experience, stay here. It's worth the visit, without a doubt. I really can't say enough about this hotel; it far exceeded both my and my husband's expectations.
