Golf course experience
I would like to write a review on the golf course as certain questions have been asked. As I have been to the Maritim numerous times it is really a nice attraction to have as it runs parallel to the beach and will take just over an hour to play. The layout is excellent the condition could be improved and having chatted with the management they are looking to invest by improving pruning foliage and extra cutting, this would make it more enjoyable. I think it is advisable to take your own clubs if possible Air Mauritius certainly are free of charge and it is nice to play with what you are used to. You can hire clubs there if you don't want to take your own and the standard is fine. The real bonus though is the professional Sachin. he is a relaxed and charming person. He provides lessons in a group or individually and if you want a playing lesson this can also be arranged. On a personal basis when he is quiet he will come and play with me competitively which is what I really enjoy It is a highlight of the holiday and is very good fun.
Had money stolen from my room, but otherwise the hotel is nice, this incident spoiled an otherwise nice holiday
Maritim resort and spa Pros: Well manicured gardens and grounds, very pretty Staff at the la maree and filaos bbq restaurant and bar, in particular Fabrice is great La maree is a fabulous restaurant in that it has amazing views, always seems fairly quiet, you can listen to the sound of waves breaking on the shore in the background Pretty decent value for money on the all inclusive for what it is (it is definitely nothing like a 5* in Europe / US by the way) Cons: Money stolen from my room, pretty poor follow up, management did not come back to me, had to chase them on it, no resolution in the end Despite being a German company most of the guests I spoke to had little to no clue on activities available, should maybe have printed schedule on check in or something of the sort I partially chose this resort for the included sailing on offer, however it's worth noting the poor state of the dinghies, they are so old they need to be replaced, probably too far to try to fix them Recommendations for the hotel: Single travelers event or mixed table dining, etc Recommendations for Guests: If you like fishing I would highly recommend Pryamide fishing charters they collected me from the hotel, had a great time on the trips I did and caught loads of great fish
Consider alternatives first
We are on our last night of a 12 night stay at the Maratim Resort and Spa, and the final 2 days have just ruined the entire experience that was, until now, verging on exceptional. The resort is beautiful, lush, and expansive. It covers a huge area and everything is kept near immaculate. There is a private beach - disappointingly the best part of it and sunbeds are reserved for (full) Suite residents only - and multiple pools - just don't expect much from them, as they are very shallow (1.3m at their deepest) The local waters are clean and clear, providing fantastic snorkelling opportunities. There is an on-site animal farm - several giant tortoises, a handful of rabbits, a few goats, some Cockerels and a few ducks - and stables with a few reasonably healthy looking horses. The location of the resort is both it's selling point, and it's Achilles heel. It is a beautiful cove surrounded by wildlife. There are very few other resorts nearby so you do not compete for space or have droves of hawkers harassing you. But it is also so far away from civilization that you have to get a very expensive taxi (2200 MUR / £35 approx for a round trip) to nearby shopping areas, or pay the most ridiculous prices in their on-site boutique - we are talking over £2 for a FUN size bag of M & Ms, just under £7 for a 250ml Red Bull Can, £27 for a beach bag my wife found for £9 elsewhere and £38 for a Mauritius T-shirt i bought for £7 at a shop in Grand Bais. We also pre-booked tickets for Casela safari, but to get us there cost £75 for a return taxi! But, most importantly...... DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A JUNIOR SUITE! We had room 569, Ground Floor Junior Suite. A Junior Suite is a lovely and spacious room, with all the conveniences you can possibly desire - multiple plugs, Usb sockets, drinks, fridge, huge bed and so on. You even get both a shower AND a huge bath, walk in wardrobe, and loads of storage spaces. There is a dedicated swimming pool just for the Junior Suites too - they kind of have to for a simple reason that will become clear in a moment. BUT..... They are located some distance from all amenities on site, including the restaurants. I walk briskly, and it took me a full 10mins to do the round trip from reception to the room and back when I forgot something. And the restaurants are further than reception, the bars further still, the main pools yet further, and finally the beach beyond all that. They do offer buggies to get around, but we found that the one time we really needed them due to torrential rain, we were left waiting for over half an hour before we gave up and ran through the rain to eat our dinner soaked to the skin - at which point we found the buggies still parked at reception preparing to ferry some very loud and very dry German guests around the site, presumably before they even considered coming to collect us and bring us to the restaurant. The buggies are also a menace. The paths are barely wide enough for the buggy, meaning when one comes speeding towards you, you're forced off the path to let them pass. Also, the Junior Suites back on to an area used to host events in a vast marquee. When they get going, there's nothing you can do to stop the noise penetrating your room, your head, and your soul. I am an old school raver, and in have stood directly besides gigantic speakers with less Bass and volume than is currently being pumped out. The glass bottles in our fridge are literally vibrating together at this very moment, and they are only doing " sound checks " for what we imagine is going to be a final night of hell and zero sleep before our 20+ hour journey back to the UK tomorrow. With the small nuances up until yesterday, we were still very happy with our time here and felt we were being overly critical about things - the food, for example that is very limited in options each day, but that's because it appears to be freshly cooked and is still hot when served. However, having my wife break down in tears because her dress is soaked through to her underwear whilst she tries to eat dinner because we were left stranded at our room was simply unacceptable. Not that my complaint had much impact on the receptionist who merely asserted that she HAD requested a buggy for us, and just promised us one to take us back to our room after dinner. The " event " that is setting up for tonight - for which we have had no notification and over which we have no control - is just going to be the final nail in the coffin for us about this resort. It will be our enduring memory as we leave this beautiful island, ruining what was supposed to be a romantic and peaceful exotic getaway for our 10th wedding anniversary. We will not consider returning to Maratim, and we would urge others to consider alternative options before committing to the cost of coming here.
Imparfait
Such a bad experience never again
Disappointing Experience at Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius
I recently stayed at the Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius and was deeply disappointed with my experience. The resort boasted of a luxury experience with gourmet dining; however, the food was mediocre at best. Each meal seemed like a repetitive array of uninspired dishes, lacking in flavor and certainly not what you would expect from a resort claiming to offer a superior culinary journey. Equally frustrating was the poor service. The staff appeared disinterested and unattentive, which was surprising for a resort of this caliber. Getting a simple request addressed felt like a cumbersome task, as it was often met with a lackluster response or ignored entirely. For a hospitality establishment that prides itself on customer satisfaction, the service I received was below par, adding to the overall unsatisfactory experience. Unfortunately, this was not the dream vacation I had hoped for, and I cannot recommend Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius to others looking for quality service and culinary delights.
Sein, what would you like to drink? " oder, Now, I think, it's time for a...
On s'y ennuie.
" Dommage..
Lovely, elegant, and warm - fantastic location and welcoming, memorable staff!!!
Thank you for the lovely stay !!!What a nice 5 star Resort! We had an amazing stay at the Maritim Resort and Spa! We were in room 270 (big group of 21 pax from Romania and Ireland) The food was great, and the bar was even better. We loved the atmosphere and the decor. It's in the perfect location. Everyone is quite accommodating! I highly recommend staying at this Resort! The staff exceeded my expectations, thank you to the guest relation lady, and thank you to a lovely concierge guy (a young man with a moustache, the Indian lovely bar guy from the infinity pool (a fairly tall young man with a moustache, sorry I didn't remember his name) This young man was exceptional, he saw you and knew exactly what you wanted to drink:) His hair was a bit long with a parting on one side. Please sent him a Big Thank you from me and also to the Team!
B. Wasserskifahren) muss man bar beim Bootshaus bezahlen.
Relaxing holiday and lovely hotel
My partner and I stayed in June 2022 and loved this hotel. The staff were accommodating and friendly. Having a'la carte breakfast on the beach every day was a real highlight. The room was beautifully clean. At times the buffet restaurant could get a little crowded but with so many different restaurants on site at busier times we often dined elsewhere eg the weekend. Paying additional to go to chateau mon desir was well worth it and almost Michelin standard. The hotel grounds are capacious and wandering around to visit the waterfalls and seeing the tortoises was a real point of difference.
Family Holiday
Our third visit to this resort - a family favourite. Recently renovated and did not disappoint. Although still distressed, the coral reef appeared to have recovered since our last visit 5 years ago. Looking forward to returning again sometime soon. Need I say more?
Service with a Smile

Time spent at maritim resort and spa mauritius
Aggressive monkey came into our room, spoiling our balcony. Bad experience. Room service came into our room. Surprisingly they just stood there and watched the monkey. They left without helping. We stood outside our room for safety for a good period of time for safety. After quite sometimes and after dealing with the problem on our own, we got a call from the reception asking us if the monkey was still there instead of asking if we are okay. Lack of customer service and customer safety. Had we wished for this experience, we would have paid for a safari at casela instead of coming to Maritim resort and spa.
Stunning place / views just needs to get its act together
We were stunned on arrival in the main reception to the sunset and view of the pool / bar (Quarter Deck) area which we found welcoming and relaxing. Drinks service in the bar was good with a large menu for cocktails / drinks and with a sunset every night to look forward to. We did however, have to lay our own table for breakfast the following morning (!) as there was no meet and greet to which we complained and following that meeting with management staff became more attentive and accommodating. My wife and I both overall enjoyed the buffet however, some of the food was over cooked being of course it was prepared for multiple guests. We then embarked on visiting all the available restaurants on the premises reports as follows:- Chateau Mon Desir - wonderful ambiance, service and food albeit well overpriced. 4 / 5 Belle Vue Buffet - Good choice and varied albeit the quality is questionable. 3 / 5 Le Banyan - Asian Fusion. Service was good albeit the food was average. 3 / 5 Lakaz Kreol - This was unusual in that you join a mixed party of max 12 people from all corners of the world which inspires great conversation. The staff were attentive and offered local Rum along with local delicacies - one of the best experiences we had. 4 / 5 La Maree - located on the beach front in our opinion was the best value for money and second on the premises to " CMD " mentioned above. 5 / 5 Les Filaos - billed as a BBQ experience inspired by the German beer Gardens was a total failure for so many reasons that we stormed off back to Bellevue given the lateness. Salda bar and main course side dishes weren't replenished despite asking. The Grilled fish was utter rubbish being very over cooked and then a piece of steak that was fit for a dog. To cap it all I asked the wine waiter for a top up and he added a different brand to my glass mixing thishonestly almost the worst experience 0 / 5, but no. Anno 1743 takes the biscuit.. So we joined another couple who had visited 7 times previously and swore this place was great but it was far from the truth. So they and us ordered separately. Their starters arrived and my wife's soup arrived after they had finished, despite them having soup too!!!!!!!!! Anyway, moving on after the table was cleared and grace period of about 10 minutes another waiter arrived and said I quote, " Did you enjoy your dinner and would you like me to clear the table ", well yes ordinarily but our friends said " well that would be nice, but could we have our main course first " !!! The five main courses then arrived but my steak was akin to a Dunlop flip flop, and this was their signature dish. Sadly at this stage we have all had enough and I called the waiter over to complain, then fetched the Chef who doubled as the " manager " who apologised and removed my wife's and my items from the bill, as they should have. It was utter rubbish and a definite 0 / 5. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the beach and its drinks service being a sun-worshipper whereas I disappeared nearly every morning to avail myself of the PADI dive shop on sight which was excellent, well run and attentive. Equipment was good and dive sights variable for the non-experienced and a great place wo either take a PADI or complete as diving was stable. We saw usual fish but also including turtles, Ray, Eels, Lobster - well the list goes on. I can't thank these guys enough for my 10 dives. Great fun. The Spa was excellent and great value for money. In conclusion however, we had met other couples that had been here multiple times and all added that staff were lacking and indeed service / attention overall was not as good as it had been pre-covid. Our experience apart from my restaurant comments above was that most staff were approachable, keen, polite and willing to assist. Some however simply did not embrace your presence or had a clue. We came here because my friend had been here 15 times previously and still swears to it today... This place is stunning, great location facing west for sunset every night whilst supping cocktails in the Quarter Deck Bar with a fine beach, great facilities, relaxing in a quiet location. Rooms well cleaned albeit mid-afternoon, but just needs to get its act together in respect of staff's greetings, pleasantness and lets not forget the Management who should be sorting these issues out. Would we come back.... for sure
" Pas Geométriques Act' violation
I'm sure this is a very good hotel. However the works being performed at the North End of the beach have made the tideline completely innaccesible which appears to be a clear breach of the " Pas Geométriques Act' allowing the public to walk rhe beach freely up to the high tideline.

Terrible food
This was our third visit to this hotel and I would go as far as to say it was our favourite hotel in the world but this visit was a big disappointment we paid for a five star hotel but the food was two star at best. It was cold uninspiring greasy and as far as the salad was concerned covered in flies. Definitely not what you would expect from a five star hotel. There are other restaurants but they carry a surcharge which is the whole bill amount in some cases and they are not open often and you are limited to the once a week in some I work hard for my money and don't appreciate being ripped off in this way. I have complained since my return but the hotel seem happy to have ripped me off suffice to say I won't be returning which is a shame because the hotel is in wonderful grounds
Mr
Very bad welcoming, Bellboy not present, reception not polite and didn't gave much information about hotel but thankfully Mr. Bavish at restaurant was very kind and helpful. After check-out no thanks and unpleasant.
disappointing not a five star!!
We stayed in the Maritim resort having been recommended by friends. Initially it appeared to be ok, We had booked a junior suite which unfortunately was at the the other end of the complex which had its own pool & bar which was not open? room looked out onto man made hard standing (sand) with two sun loungers. We were the only people at that end of the complex. We had booked all the suggested restaurants at a cost but started in the Buffet which was included all i can say was very poor standard. beach BBQ once again standard not good & left most of the food, A few people had complained. Anno fine dining restaurant lovely setting couldnt eat food sent wine back two other tables had complained also. After speaking to the management on two occasions regarding the issues & also after they had moved us to a superior suite the food was no better. So decided to move to another Hotel for the remainder of our holiday. I really hope they manage to sort the issues out and would be happy for any feed back from the Hotel.
Horrible!
This hotel does not live up to its 5 -star rating. The bad experience started right from the entrance of the main gate. The guard at the entrance gate was very rude and had such a bad tone of voice while " requesting " for our ID cards etc. At the reception, no proper welcome and intro (as is the norm in hotels). The reception staff barely attended us and seemed irritated by the questions we had regarding the stay. As soon as we stepped in our room, we were hit in the face by some kind of stale odor. Called the reception thrice and each time we got the response " we are sending someone to check ". After waiting for a long time for someone to come, I had to personally go to the reception to request that they have someone check the issue. And that someone showed up after more than 2 hours that I had registered my 4th complaint at the reception! The staffs are all rude, impolite, unwelcoming with no conversation etiquette. Just to cite a few: We approached one staff at the main bar, facing away from us and he coldly asked us to wait by doing the " wait " hand gesture with his back still facing us. Another staff at the same bar just shouted " wear your mask! " at one person who had not worn her mask. No proper way of talking to people. One of the bar guy got my order completely wrong and when I informed him about same, I was given a death stare and he turned his back without saying a word. After some time he came back asking " in gagner la boisson la? " (in creole) which means " did you get the drink? ". We went for lunch at the beach restaurant (to note the restaurant closes around 14h30) and ordered only 2 main courses only. We were having a conversation while having our lunch and at that moment, the staff comes to clear our table without even asking whether we have finished. When we informed him that we have not finished, he responded that the restaurant will be closing soon and there will be no staff to attend to us. However other tables were occupied as well by tourists but they were not given this type of treatment! Is it a thing at Maritim to treat locals differently from tourists? We understand that once the restaurant closes, we cannot order anything (which we would not anyway) but are we supposed to leave our lunch in the middle just because the restaurant is closing? The food at the main restaurant is tasteless, inedible and cold. The cocktails are disappointing. No great choice during tea time as well. Overall cheap quality food and drinks. Cherry on the cake, we went swimming in the evening and left our belongings on the pool deck chair. Actually left my dress on the pool chair and went back to my room. When I came back to look for my dress, it was not there. Asked around in the main bar, the towel counter and reception and no one had anything registered on " lost and found " for that day. I was asked to wait and they will get back to me if ever they find something. Obviously did not hear anything back, so I went to the reception on the next day to find out. Still " no we have not found any lost dress ". I asked them to check the cameras near the pool and after some hesitation they finally agreed. After a lot of waiting, one of the reception staff comes back saying " yes we saw you coming to the pool wearing the dress but when you went back. the dress was not there. " Okay, so I ask the staff: " did I wear the dress on my way back? " - Answer is no. " did I carry the dress with me on my way back? ". - Answer is again no. " was the dress on the pool chair while I was going back? " - once more, no. " did someone come by and took the dress while I was in the pool? " - still no. So did my dress vanish in thin air or did it walk itself somewhere??? While I understand that it was totally my responsibility to ensure my belongings are safe where I leave them, all I expected from the staff was some genuine help to find my lost dress!! Overall, worst experience ever with a " 5-star hotel ". I had been to 4-star hotels around the island with much better service and staff. Will not return to Maritim nor recommend to someone!
Definitely to avoid
We stayed at the hotel this weekend (2nd to 3rd April), and I normally do not like to give bad reviews but this hotel along with its staffs deserve a big -0. To start with; 1. No welcome when we came (not even a Greeting) 2. No welcome drink at arrival 3. Staff at reception talk super well with tourists but with locals, they don't feel the need to do so 4. Staffs at the main restaurant, are they trained to work in hotels? Because it seems that we came at their snacks and they were talking to us as if they own that place and ofcourse not talking with respect. 5. The woman at the egg counter, please someone teach her to smile and say Goodmorning to clients coming her counter. Seeing someone who look angry and annoyed while doing someone food def bring on negativity. 6. It was raining heavily on Saturday and we were at the pool near the junior suits and we saw a buggy, and kindly requested him if he can take us to the reception as we were staying in the Deluxe room, and that person bluntly replied that " No he cannot as he is waiting for a client. " He didn't even propose to drop the client and come back to take us back. He repeatedly said that no he cannot. We had to walk back in the rain and not to mention that not all lights were on. And the corridor where we were staying, all lights were off for idk what reason. So had to walk in the dark to go for dinner. And yes, i forgot to mention that we were told (by the guy who refused to bring us back at the reception) that the hotel have only two buggy and on that day, one broke down and the other one " he cannot bring us back one " 7. Food, well, disappointed with the buffet, it was boff! 8. And yes, the room was def not clean properly, plus no body lotion provided, and when we called at the reception, the lady there mention that Maritim never provide body lotion (which i know is false as i confirmed same with a friend who stayed there previously). Plus only one small shampoo, shower gel provided for two person. I am not new to Maritim as I came for brunch at the château several times as the food there and the service is very good at the château and this time we decided for a family stay to experience the hotel as a whole (we were 22 pax) and all of us were extremely disappointed with the service / food, waiting time to get a buggy to go near the Ruins. It's definitely a hotel that I will never stay again and will discourage pple I know to spend their money to book a stay there as they will regret for sure. 👎
Very Disappointing
We have visited this hotel twice before and, on both occasions I would have rated this resort with 5 stars. Our last visit was some 12 years ago. On our recent visit we stayed in a Suite. The suits we tastefully decorated spacious with large balcony overlooking the sea and gardens. We were on an all inclusive package which sadly meant that we received all the cheapest food and drink the hotel could get its hands on. The standard of food and beverages was what I would call canteen / prison food. It was just awful and in many cases chewy, tough and inedible. The only decent food served at this hotel was in the Chateau Mon Desire and Anno. Both these restaurants are only open once per week. This meant we were at the mercy of the other restaurants for most of the time. We even thought of checking out and into another hotel because of the poor standard of the all inclusive food and beverages. We did complain and the drinks improved to some premium brands. They do not serve champagne here but some cheap bubbly alternative which is again on the all inclusive list and not good. All in all apart from the food the hotel location is wonderful but the beach is slowly being eaten away by constant typhoons over the years and you now have inland water run off taking up much of the main beach. The staff at this hotel are its saving and an inspiration. Jay went above and beyond to make us happy he is in my view wasted at this hotel and should be Managing at a far superior resort. Bob the barman did his best also to make us happy by providing some premium drinks with our all inclusive package. The room cleaning staff were also exceptional. Sadly we will not be returning to this hotel. The food experience was so bad that we will not risk coming again. I am aware that a number of other customers also complained about the food during our stay. I do wish the hotel well in the future and can only hope that someone will take note of the comments concerning the food and make the necessary improvements.
Rude arrogant management, long service, big let down
By some distance the worst hotel experience we have had in Mauritius. The booking was a nightmare, with lots of unclear communication, the hotel agreeing to requests in advance and then refusing them on arrival. Examples include: can our third child stay in our room for the same price, if not no problem she can stay with her aunt who is also coming to the hotel at the same time - the hotel said yes and then charged us a surcharge for it; we asked if we could have lunch on the day of arrival rather than the day of check out, the hotel said yes and then charged us for lunch on the day of arrival. When we raised these issues to management we were meet with a defensive, legalistic, aggressive response which was very disappointing. The stay itself was a little better. The rooms were decent, the setting was good, the pool was well designed, and some individual staff members were fantastically nice and helpful. However, this was undermined a little by ridiculous queues - caused by bad planning and not nearly enough serving stations per guest; mediocre food, and abysmal, overly sweet and weak cocktails. Will never return to this or other Maritim hotels again
1 week break
Just returned from our 1 week break at ambre resort. Absolute bargain. The hotel is so nice and a relaxed atmosphere. The food amazing. The beach and pool area absolute heaven. But the best part has got to be the staff, they make the experience so much better. If you're looking for a nice holiday, look no further, promise.
First and last stay at this Hotel. HORRIBLE!!
First and last stay at this Hotel. It's definitely not worth wasting your hard-earned money nor time there. I wonder how this hotel earn this 5-star title. Totally ruined the weekend of my family. The hotel is understaffed which led to poor service and everything was very slow even at restaurants to serve ourselves. The staff are ok however they lack empathy towards Mauritian guests and does not show enthusiasm in their job, but you will see them happily talking, smiling and greeting the tourists and talk to them with so much energy. Seriously?? Why such double standard?? Mauritian have also paid for their stay; we are not staying for free!! The afternoon tea was the worst, it did not reflect the standard of a 5-star hotel, there were only samosas and carrot cakes. It took 1 hour for the food to come out without any sauces (tomato, sweet chilli etc). They don't bother to refill. Very poor service. For all inclusive it is not worth it at all... they don't have coffee / tea (except the infusion one) at the bar. And have to wait for more than 30 mins to get a drink!!!! I can't imagine that in a 5 star hotel, people have to make a queue to get seated during dinner times. We had to wait for 30 mins to get a table. The food was so scarce for a 5-star hotel. (Please go and see how large varieties are being served in a 4 stars) Almost all platters were empty, and you had to keep asking for them to replenish. They don't even check the platters. I don't think it deserves to be a 5-star hotel. Even 2 stars am sure are more customer orientated. The food options weren't great. Usually, you get so many varieties in hotels and specially at this time of the year. Totally disappointed. There were bees in the room. For the deluxe room, please consider investing more in it. It looks like a normal simple room like a 2 star. There were also lots of little spiders on the dining table. Poor night entertainment, guests were getting bored. Clubcar are only for tourists to benefit it. Mauritians we have to wait for 'hours' to get same. Delayed housekeeping service for room cleaning. Had to ask several time to come to clean the room. They don't even refill water bottle in the room. Coming back to our room from the pool, to our great surprise, there was a food order made on our name, and its bill. And we have not order anything. We had to go to the reception (Sunday afternoon) and tell them that we have not order anything, so that they can take the food out of the room to prevent smell, and to write off the amount from our bill. The lady said needful will be done. The food has been in the room till we check out Monday afternoon. They didn't bother to come and remove it nor has any respect for the food getting wasted. Even while check out, another lady told me that there is a food order bill on our name, and I had to again narrate the whole story. It seems there is no proper coordination among the staffs at the reception. We were extremely looking forward to this trip to enjoy the most of the long weekend holidays, we often stay in hotels around Mauritius for long weekend. Knowing it was a 5-star hotel we were expecting good customer service, food and entertainment. Unfortunately, really regretted for ruining our stay and spending the money there.
Utterly disappointing
The hotel itself, structurally speaking, is nice, rooms are comfortable and clean, and the view from the restaurant is outstanding. However, the staff disappoints big time. From a 5 star hotel, I would have expected more professionalism from the staff. 1. To begin, I had to wait 2 hours+ before being granted the keys to my room. To note that I arrived 1 hour prior to check in time, and that most of the guests that arrived afterwards got access to their rooms in a short delay. Management was unable to come up with any explanation, except that the hotel was fully booked. Should that be my concern? Should management not be able to plan a proper roster and put adequate manpower on duty to cater for this? Should the rooms not have been ready by 3.30pm? Please give your staff more training. When we were about to be given our access cards, we were being asked for our names for the 100th time. Seriously, should you not have our details already on your system? especially after you took our ID cards for a scan, and not to mention you had the check-in forms filled in? -- Myself and a group of friends booked a total of 6 rooms, separately. However, we were overlooked as coming in as a group, and we all had delayed access to our rooms. -- 2. We were being offered coffee / tea only after we were finished with breakfast. We had the same issue for lunch. Again, put additional staff on duty during peak season. 3. Water from the shower was barely lukewarm, after putting the tap fully on hot, and waiting for 5 minutes under cold water. 4. Food was definitely not up to the standards of a 5 star hotel. Variety was on par with that of a 3 star hotel. Seriously disappointing. DO BETTER! 5. Extremely lonnng waiting time at the bar. 6. Lots of wasps nests everywhere in the corridors leading to our rooms, on the balconies and near the pool.
Do not go for special occasions - you won't feel special!
Not worth it. Staff stressed me out for my birthday. I couldn't enjoy it. Food was not as per standard. The room: not all lights were working, no bottle opener (I had to request at midnight!), I had requested for the alcoholic drinks to be switched to soft drinks and there was no feedback, different policies and versions from front office. The aim is to make profit at every moment - I had a guest coming 1 hr earlier for lunchtime. I was asked to pay for his 1 hr or to ask him to come later (when he was almost there). Then the front office told me they would have to ask the Manager for permission and I would have to wait (on my birthday). I had requested for my friend, photographer to come for a photoshoot as I am comfortable only with him: i was asked to pay the hotel the same rate I would be paying an in-house photographer and only then they could let someone else take pictures of me. I had to be scared taking photos of myself everywhere. I got late (10 minutes- I had informed beforehand) for my cutting of cake at the restaurant for lunch. I'm grateful the restaurant waited for me. But I was asked to be seated at the designated plate, and reproached for being late. My dad, who couldn't walk quickly, had to be rushed to come to the table so as to take our last minute order. During my birthday lunch, staff were busy cleaning, utensils falling, staff shouting. I couldn't have a proper birthday lunch. Even when the birthday cake was coming, it was like a normal dish as the staff was so much in a rush. Regarding the cake, I wasn't even informed that it would be a gift for me. The reservation never mentioned it. I was asked to put Do not disturb on my door so that even room cleaning would not come. Despite it, maids came. All my jewelries, belongings were on my bed as I had to rush for breakfast. It was such a stressful birthday. The only peaceful moment I had was during the dinner due to the atmosphere and nicely decorated table (upon my request). Only to thank: Veema, Wassim, Guru, Amrita ??
Cordialement Mme Souba.
Horrible Hotel & Staff
Horrible staff and Horrible hotel.. Not worth to waste your hard earned money.. Hopeless 5 star.. Nothing to write more.. So bloody disgusted with this place.. Just wait for everything.. Waited more than 1 hour for check in.. Q for dinner table.. Below the standard food..
Big disappointment
Went there to celebrate my sister's birthday during the weekend.. it was such a bad experience.. to begin with, we reached there at around 15h15 but it they took more than an hour to complete the formalities as such we were able to access the room at around 16h30.. we started walking to the room when suddenly the lady realised that she forgot to put tags on our bags on which it was supposed to write our room numbers.. so we had to go back to the reception to complete this formality.. by the time we walked to the bar for tea time, it was already 16h45 and they informed us that we have only 5 mins to order something to eat… we ordered chicken burger which was supposed to be chicken patty but what we got was those in packets which are sold in supermarkets.. and they took almost an hour to bring the burgers.. when we complained about the burger, we were told that chicken patty was over so instead of informing us they gave us fried burgers.. the worst part was that i made a cake for my sister which i requested them to put in the fridge as soon as we reached the hotel.. i called at the restaurant and and requested them to bring the cake in our room.. after waiting for an hour, i called at the reception and told them that i will be coming to take the cake as it was already late.. after dinner when i bought the cake in the room i was surprised to see that the cake was collapsing as the cream was melting.. the cake was not put in the fridge.. had they told me that they won't be able to put it in the fridge i would have taken it to an airconditioned room.. you people don't know how much effort one takes to bake a cake… this completely ruined the surprise party.. also we negotiated to have a small birthday cake to be served at the restaurant during the dinner on Saturday but to our surprise they did not make any arrangements and instead, we they were about to bring the cake which i brought from home.. went to other hotels to celebrate birthdays and they always made it special.. this was the only hotel in which nothing was done to make the birthday special.. instead they only ruined it moreover, when we went for dinner, the food was almost over but nobody bothered to cook some more food.. pasta was over so they suggested to take rice which would not at all suit the food we were eating.. the variety of food was limited.. there was only two type of deserts We also spotted mosquitoes on the deserts while going for lunch on Sunday.. so unhygienic for a five star hotel Cherry on the cake was the alarm which started to ring on sunday at 6am.. went there to relax, not to wake up early to have a day same as the usual.. This stay was such a great disappointment.. i personally do not recommend this hotel to anyone.. services provided by a 3-star hotel is by far much better than that in this " so called " five star hotel.. it's not worth the price at all
Bad experience
We were there this weekend for a birthday and our experience was not good. We entered thr hotel at around 3.15 but it took us at least one good hour to complete check in formalities and we had our home baked cake which had to be kept in fridge. We gave them the cake witj utmost care trusting they would keep the cake as requested. By the time we went to our room and settled the tea time was almost over. So we hurried to the resto and ordered burgers and drinks. We had to go after them to see where was our food n drinks. Finally after some 20 min we got our drinks but still no food. On asking them why they are taking so long they said it was taking time since we were a large group and therefore it was time consuming. Finally after more than 1 hr of wait we got our burgers and to our surprise it was only a bun with a big chicken nuggets. We complained about it and the responsible person told us that the burger patty was over therefore they gave us this instead. Around 20.30 we wanted to do our cake cutting since we planned a surprise in the room. We called to ask fr our cake but we waited for more than 30 min still the cake didnt come. We had no choice than go dinner since restaurants close at 22.00. The food range was limited and some was over and they did nt replenish it. We had to eat substitutes lik instead of tagliatelle which was over we got macaroni. Around 21.45 someone came n told us the restaurant will close in 15 min so if we have to take anything, we should go now. So we left to take our dessert and a friend who was eating left his food to take the dessert. When we came back his plate with food was gone and all he was left with was dessert. The hotel told us they will give us a cake after dinner we were waiting for the cake they were supposed to give instead they came with our cake which we brought from home. We told them that no this cake was supposed to be cut in the room n we were waiting for the cake they would offer. They said they did not have any cake order so tomorrow we will get thr cake after lunch. We took our cake with us and headed to the room. There to our surprise we found that the cake was not in the fridge as requested and our cake was broken. We were disapointed. We called the receptiom to complain they said the cake was just removed from the fridge. The cake was not chilled at all. Our surprise was ruined and everyones mood was off. Around 23.00 we went to the bar and there the responsible said the bar was closed. We had to literally beg for 2 drinks. Later we found out that the bar closes at 23.30. We were more upset. We came to our room and slept. The next morning an alarm broke waking all of us up. We went to complain for our bad stay and they offered us a late check out though everything wasclosed and they gave us a cake which was already promised the night before. We were very much disapointed since we came with family and friends and we had sych a poor service. However the place is very nice and beautiful and staffs are friendly. The hotel was understaffed which led to poor service and everything was very slow even at restaurants to serve ourselves. Some food was tasty even if there was a poor selection. But the purpose for which we went to the hotel was a total disapointment.
Not 5 star service & amenities
The hotel will be undergoing renovation end of January. Hopefully it will reflect a 5 star hotel upon re opening. The staff are ok however they lack empathy towards guest and does not show enthusiasm in their job. The food is not great, stayed for 2 nights got the same kind of food there was not any theme buffet. The afternoon tea was the worst, it did not reflect the standard of a 5 star hotel, there were oily onion rings ons day and the other day gummy squid ring with some pancakes. It took 1 hour for the food to come out without any sauces (tomato, sweet chilli etc). When asked with the staff if we can order from the menu they were not sure if we can order and was not interested or keen to assist. The bar is ok however staff lack the smile and hospitality with guest. The standard room that I booked was not great definitely need some renovation and new amenities did not really matter though as I spent most of my time outside by the beach & pool. The hotel is quite big and has a lot of potential in terms of location and activities onsite. It has a horse stable, a colonial house or as they call it Chateau which is also an a la carte restaurant and a nature area with a waterfall. This could be a great asset if promoted rightly with inhouse guests. Overall the hotel need a good renovation and maybe more training for staff to offer a high quality service to reflect the 5 star.
Disappointing experience with dismal housekeeping standards
Stayed in Maritim resort with the family to spend New Year Eve using an All Inclusive package. The check in experience was good with the staff receiving properly at a late chave in and explaining the facilities and the inclusions and exclusions. The hotel also has a good pool, entertainment at night and sport activities. The breakfast is the same every day and not very well made. The wine and drinks provided are undrinkable mixtures of the lowest quality (I recommend that you stick with beer). The worst part is the cleaning and housekeeping standards (they clean very late, do not clean the glasses and cutlery used in the room, sometimes towels are not replaced, dirty glasses are placed back in the cupboards, etc). They do not have vacuum cleaners to use in rooms, rooms are dirty. It is very much a 2 star experience paying 5 star prices. The convergir service is also not helpful and it looks that the staff is not sufficient or management does not pay attention to the standards. It is my worst hotel experience so far, especially in relation to cleaning, quality of drinks and support. The food is acceptable.
Very welcoming
We spent nine nights during November in a premium spa room with the all inclusive package. The spa room is basically a premier room but with the added bonus of a daily treatment from a select menu at the spa for both of us. The resort had a small and select feel, and felt reasonably compact despite the extensive grounds. The Belle Vue buffet restaurant offered a daily variety of international foods, although lunch was more basic. There were a range of other pleasant restaurants including a beach barbecue, Asian fusion and seafood. There is fine dining available. The " inclusive " menu options here were limited (you could pay extra for the wider menu choices) but all of the food was good quality, and well prepared. Thanks to all the staff, particularly Ansa on spa reception for sorting out our daily choices. The spa was a short walk across the resort, with a yoga centre, large jacuzzi and steam room and sauna as well as loungers to relax after treatments. Treatments were good value, but personally I found once was enough for the aqua massage.
Also kein Problem.
Beautiful location, Fabulous Hotel and Amazing People!
Other than the obvious quality the people make this hotel a destination worth a revisit. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, nothing was too much trouble. With a good selection of restaurants (although we'd advise booking tables on arrival) we were never short of fabulous food to eat, Although there are a few menu items that require a small additional payment these were few and far between and we managed without! Even though there were lots of people staying a the hotel it still felt quiet, we had a good choice of sunbeds every day (no need to rush!) and there's always a great view seat at the bar in the evenings.... and what a sunset to watch. Personally we we would like to thank the bar staff, especially Dave, for the great service, never too early for a Rum and Coke. Also it was my birthday whilst away and so a special mention to Kavita from the Guest Communication team who called me and sung happy Birthday! Plus arranged a fabulous special table at the La Maree restaurant, on the beach, flowers, candles and even a cake!! There's a birthday I'll never forget. We only stayed for a week, what a mistake! So much to do, from the spa, boat trips to a whole array of water sports. Never a dull moment, unless of course you choose to relax by the amazing pool. Yes, it was cold when you first got in but nice to get out of the sun! Thank you to all...
Godny polecenia.
Beautiful Hotel
We stayed at the Maritim in October 2015, travelling to Mauritius to spend a week after a short break in Dubai. From the welcome, where we were offered towels and a refreshing drink, we new we had arrived somewhere special. The Maritim is set over beautiful grounds, we spent a day just walking around to see the ruins and wildlife, the beach was clean and beautiful. The pool area was also clean and well managed with a pool " warden " keeping an eye our for those leaving towels / deck chairs unattended, as one who likes fairness I loved this, and must say we could always find a seat by the pool on the rare occassion we sat there instead of on the stunning beach. The food at the Maritim was great, with a fantastic choice for all meal times, the pancakes with vanilla honey at breakfast became a fast favourite of mine. We also dined in Chateau Mon Desir as we had this included in our package through Virgin, we would have paid to come here if we hadn't been offered this as it was the most wonderful experience; the food was incredible, particularly the beef wellington for main and the souffle dessert, definitely worth the experience as the building is beautiful too. We also ate at the restaurant on the beachfront, with our feet in the sand, it was such a romantic meal with the noise of the ocean in the background. One night we ate at the " family style " restaurant where you share a table with other guests, my only criticism here is that they don't check languages when you book this and we were sat with 3 couples from Germany who were lovely but with our broken language skills it was a little awkward at times, whereas the rest of them could converse naturally. Overall we had a wonderful trip and we would not hesitate to stay again and recommend to friends.
Wedding
My husband and I got married here in May 2016 and it was simply amazing. The rooms where beautiful, the food was out of this world. For our wedding meal we ate in chateau mon desir and we had never tasted anything more delicious. The grounds are lovely and so well kept. The staff are so nice and would do anything for you. The wedding team where amazing and made our day go so smoothly and made it completely perfect. The hotel makes their own flavoured rums and all of them are lovely the vanilla rum is so good!I hope some day we can return to this beautiful place.
Very happy holiday in a great resort on the Beautiful Island of Mauritious
From the moment your car pulls up to the gates, and you are driven down the tree lined drive, you realise what a fabulous hotel this is. As others have said check in is on a sofa with a cool towel and refreshing drink. We chose the premium all inclusive and were shown to our well appointed room close to the beach. Its a little walk from the pool, however we soon discovered that the beach rather than pool was for us. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left the staff were courteous, friendly and helpful, always saying hello with a smile. It is difficult to pick out any particular staff member Yavheer on the bar was a total star, remembering our name and drinks from day one. Service at all the restaurants was great as indeed at the watersports centre and spa. However we came with our 9 year old daughter and we cannot thank the four girls at the Children's club enough, who looked after all the children so well, kept them busy, active with a varied daily programme and happy! Other than the daily buffet the resort offers three other restaurants within the all inclusive package, however as we soon discovered spaces are limited at each and the one downside to our stay was having to pre book restaurants for 5 days to a week in advance to ensure that we could eat where we wished to. This was not something we wanted to be tied to and indeed despite our best efforts were only able to visit the beach BBQ once in our two week stay due to prior bookings! The other beach restaurant La Maree also proved very popular and my main word of advise to other travellers is to book a week in advance as soon as you arrive so as not to be disappointed. This is the one area I feel the management should work on to ensure that there is better capacity. There is a 5th restaurant called " The Chateau " which is a high class dining restaurant which is not included within the all inclusive. Quality of the food is excellent however be prepared to pay London, New York or Paris prices! The hotel also offers a variety of water sports some within some payable from pedal boating to scuba diving and snorkelling. As with all staff they are helpful and friendly. We didn't utilise the pool much, mainly because most sunbeds appeared reserved by others guest from early morning until late, even though many were clearly not being used for long. However there are plenty of sunbeds on the beach and the sea was warmer than the pool when we visited, with good snorkelling just off the beach. Recommend however bringing swim shoes with you as there is coral in the sea. Overall we had a fabulous relaxing holiday, our daughter loved the kids club which gave us a great break too. We will hopefully return again one day Thank you to the staff
Family Holiday and 10 Year Anniversary
We spent a wonderful week at Maritim for our 10 year anniversary and first overseas trip for our 2 year old daughter. The staff were fantastic, always smiling and friendly. Everyone from the front door, reception, cleaning crew and waiters - always greeted us and asked how we are. They played with our daughter and made us laugh. Facilities are great, food was excellent and resort just spectacular. I highly recommend this resort.
Just perfect
We went there on honeymoon for 9 lovely nights. Staff is very friendly and helpful although sometimes their English is a bit hard to understand. Room was very nice, big enough and very clean. Food was good and you had plenty too choose from. The Quarter-Deck bar is very nicely decorated and drinks are good too. The a la carte restaurants are nice, we like Los Filaos the most. The fine dinning from Chateau Mon Desir is something else, really exquisite and high-class. The pool was nice but a bit cold. The beach is great and you can do some snorkeling too. We also enjoyed the free pedalo and kayak rides, and the payable tube ride. Overall it was a great experience for us and would love to come back.
Perfect Wedding & Honeymoon
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Maritim Mauritius Resort and cannot praise this Hotel highly enough. From the first moment we arrived we were warmly greeted by the staff and " welcomed to paradise ". We were provided with a refreshing cocktail and warm towels to freshen up after our long journey. We were given a very informative and detailed explanation of the Hotel and a tour of the amenities and Restaurants etc. which we found to be very helpful. We stayed in a privilege room, which was very clean, spacious, tidy and nicely furnished. The bathroom was large with 2 sinks, a bath, large shower and seperate toilet. The room had a plasma TV, air con, a dehumidifier, a comfy armchair and foot rest, and a balcony with a table and 2 comfy chairs - here we were able to enjoy the breathtaking view over the bay and beautiful sunset. The mini-bar was filled with beer, juice, water and coke etc on a daily basis. There was also an evening turn-down service, where towels could be exchanged (twice daily if wished) and an additional 1L bottle of water was left in the room. We booked the AI option and it was well worth it - The Food and drink was great! We ate most meals in the " Belle Vue " buffet restaturant and there was always so much to choose from. Every evening there was a different theme e. g. Seafood, Mauritian etc. The Food was always well prepared and there was always enough variety. We spent most days at the pool which is large and spacious - it never felt over-crowded. There were enough sunbeds and bean bags etc. The infinity pool is amazing, with a great view over the bay and here you can enjoy drinks at the " swim-up " pool bar. There is also the option to order snacks at the pool bar - Club Sandwiches, Fish and Chips etc. Our wedding day was an unforgettable experience, from day one Madhavi and Hansini took care of everything and accompanied us to St Louis to complete the necessary formalities there. On the wedding day, everything went so smoothly, it was totally stress-free and we were so impressed with everything - the photographer also did an amazing Job! We were so happy with the service provided and everything is arranged on your behalf - you literally just have to turn-up!!! After our photos, we had our wedding dinner at the " La Maree ", we had a table on the beach surrounded by candles and it was really romantic - absolutley more than we ever could have imagined. You can pick your own wedding menu and the food was lovely and you are well looked after by the staff - it was an unforgettable evening. We also did an excursion to swim with the Dolphins - this was a great experience. We booked this via our tour rep " Connections ". However, we later found out that the Hotel / Boathouse offers the same trip at a muich better price! We wished that we were made aware of this and would recommend them to promote the excursions more!!! We definitely would have booked this trip via them, alone saving the hour Long bus journey to the Harbour etc. All in all, we had an amazing 2 week stay at the Resort and could not have wished anymore. All of the staff are great so friendly, helpful and always accomodating, no matter what the issue or matter is, they will do all they can to help. A few Special mentions to " Adeela " at reception, she is a real gem, always smiling and always willing to assist. " Dave " for serving us drinks at the pool all day, " Vinaljy " (Hope I spelt your Name right), " Daryl " and all the staff at the Quarterdeck bar for serving and taking care of us!!! " Veena " who cleaned our room - she is a lovely Lady and did such a great job and to " Abishek and Pankaj " the front of house porters and 2 of the most friendliest lads we have ever met - These guys are a credit to the Hotel and " First impressions " really do Count. Be sure to take trip around the hotel grounds in the golf buggy to visit the tortoises, waterfall etc - These guys will take care of you and show you the sights! Again, thank you to all the staff at the Hotel for making our stay and our " special day " so unforgettably amazing! We will definitely be returning!!!
Beautiful and perfect.... Almost!
We stayed at Maritim in the last week of May / first week of June 2016. On on arrival met with a refreshing towel and a drink. Booked in by a member of staff who then took us to our room. We were in room 337 which is very near to reception but far enough away not to get noisy. A beautiful colonial prestige room which had a balcony overlooking the gardens and bay. The first number of your room is the floor number. We were on the third floor but due to the way the buildings are built on a hill we were actually only one floor up. As the room numbers get lower (second two numbers) the room gets higher off the ground. The room was beautiful and previous reviews have highlighted this. Extra things though are there is one British plug socket in the room under the tv. There is also one African plug socket (three pin like British but big round holes) under the tv. All the other plugs are European sockets. (See pictures) There is a dehumidifier in the room. You will need to keep this on as much as you can. If you think the room is too humid then change the percentage down. We kept it about 60%. It's fills up the tank in about a day. Easy to pull out the tank from the unit by just sliding it out of the bottom holding one hand each side. (See picture) Then empty in bath and slide back in. It tells you when full as well as an error code will come up and it will stop working. The room mini bar has mostly free drinks. I have included photo of room list which shows free products. Phoenix beer is good. Soft drinks and a half bottle of white wine. We thought the white wine was ok. If you leave a note of anything extra you need the staff will leave it. We'd always asked for extra bottles of water. You can use the tap water for coffee / tea if you boil it but it is not drinkable without boiling it. Very good air con in room although we did not use much as temp about 20 degrees at night. There is a ceiling fan which kept us cool enough. Plenty of wardrobe space / drawer space. NB There is no iron in room so we bought a travel one with us. I just used a large bath towel on top of desk under TV to iron clothes as we needed them. There is a pull out wash line in the shower for hanging rinsed swimwear. However you can not get stuff dry so we were using backs of chairs on balcony. Stuff dries quick in day. There was an electric mossy killer in room so we used our own as well. Did not see hardly any mosses though throughout our entire stay. The hotel do smoke out the grounds every few days. We were told it's worse in Mauritian summer (British winter) we also used mossy spray on ourselves every night except one when we forgot. Did not get bitten that night though so could not have been many around. Great maid service to room with turn down in evening. Beaches are great. There is the private beach but I don't think this is worth paying 20euros extra for. If it comes with your room great but would not bother otherwise. Waiters on main beach bring you drinks (incl beer if you want it) and there is a selection of food. The drink and food are included in all incl (see picture of beach and pool menu and basket meals). Very good food if you don't want to get off your sun bed. I really think people are over complicating the all inclusive. If you ask at reception or at the restaurants themselves they will show you a menu and all incl items are marked. Such as la Maree about 80-90% of the evening menu and lunch menu are included (starters, mains and deserts) we ate at la Maree 5 times in two weeks and I had a different meal every night. The food is very good here as well. On the theme nights you do not have to have the theme ie lobster or steak. When you book at reception tell them you want the a la carte menu (this is the menu With all incl items) and you can change to the theme on the night when you arrive if you wish. We hardly spent anything extra at all in two weeks. It really is simple. There are also drinks menus with all incl marked. Again loads of choice and night a problem to avoid extra choices. Water sports great with massive choice and more than I have seen anywhere else. There are other sports and activities but the nice thing is the staff are not pushy or even asking you to go to them. If you want to go its your choice and there are daily activity sheets in reception and by the towel hut as well as on your TV in the room. The towel hut is by the pool and you can get as many towels as you want against you room number. You then take them back there and exchange them daily if you wish or take them back and get new ones the following day.... simples! You do not need a token. Horse riding is from the stables and you can go along beach if you wish. About £19 for 45 mins. Lovely walk up to stables / giant tortoises from water sports kiosk. Along river, past ruins, mon desire to the animals. Be warned there are some mossies up there! In the evening there are the two bars. The quarterdeck and la Maree. La Maree is more adult orientated being by the restaurants and has the beach bonfire each evening. Nice and relaxing. At la Maree they usually have a singer (light touch) At quarter deck they have more shows etc. There are weddings at the hotel so you sometimes get small parties of people of up to 25 people. This is not he hotels fault but yes some of the people (always British) are chavy!! Shame but at least the resort is big enough to get away from them. When ever there was a kid out of control or a loud mouthed slightly drunk idiot at the bar they were always British. There are many Brits, French and German at this hotel and I hope the French and German do not think we Brits are all like that. It is a very very small minority and they will know who they are. But in this day and age even the chavs have money I am afraid!!! Did a trip with Vic from the bike hire to Pamplemoose park. A great time out and Vic is a great guide around the park. Only cost £9 each incl the bikes. £4 each extra to get into the park. We also did the hotel Spa which was lovely and really relaxing. WIFI we did not find a problem in the room. We were close to the golf club so used that wifi. There are a number of Maritim wifi so you may have to keep changing it. It's good enough to stream video and FaceTime on. On the beach I used the Ravanela hotel wifi (this is the hotel next door) as it was better. Not great but ok. As mentioned before the dogs do need sorting out. They do beg at restaurants at times. They do also fight and bark at night outside rooms so can interrupt your sleep. Have ventured out though onto the island and there are stray dogs all over the place. Looks like the Mauritian gov need to sort out the bigger picture to start with. There are lots without collars about the resort and beach. They chase the hotel dogs (ones with collars) as well. I can not stand dogs but they would not stop me going back to the Maritim so they are not that bad! All in all a fantastic hotel in a real relaxing sense. Not pushy or OTT in any way. Perfect place to do as much or as little as you wish and we will be going back. We found the service second to none.
Wonderful holiday, hotel not bad too! (With some inconsistencies)
Overall review: On our first ever visit to the island of Mauritius we have fallen in love with this idyllic island, so much so we cannot wait to return, hopefully later this year when there is less rain! It is a beautiful green and lush island with so much to see and do; we had a great experience, some days lazing by the beach, other days getting out and about exploring this fascinating island. Travelling to the island - oh dear! Let me get the only real negative out of the way first. We flew with Emirates (our first time with them, we were looking forward to a positive experience) on an overnight flight from Manchester to Mauritius via Dubai. As scheduled we would have had a couple of hours at Dubai airport to stretch our legs before flying onto Mauritius. Well, that's how it should have been in theory. In practice we left Manchester 2.5 hours late and then had 30 minutes to catch our connecting flight. We had to run through the airport and reached the departure gate with minutes to spare. We then boarded only to find that a technical fault and then a missed slot resulting in us not leaving for another 1.5 hours! We finally arrived late in the evening at the Maritim, sadly without our luggage which was still at Dubai. After much chasing we were finally reunited with our luggage 24 hours later. Lesson for us next time, pack some spare clothes in our hand luggage for such an eventuality. As for Emirates, well their customer care and standard of service leaves a lot to be desired, but that's another story. The Maritim Hotel: Let me straight away start by saying that on the whole we had a fantastic time staying at this hotel. The facilities, the location, the free activities, the beautiful grounds, the chateau, etc... all make for a great self contained holiday venue. At times we felt like royalty and this is all down to the majority of the staff who make you feel valued, not just as a guest but as a personal friend. I have to make special mention of the staff at the quarter deck bar and those who provide the beach service; they were superb, we didn't want for anything. When we said our goodbyes to certain individuals we were in tears, such was the warmth of the friendship that had developed between us over the course of our stay. Before I forget, I must also make special mention to the young lady at the towel hut, what a lovely smile you used to give us every day we came to see you, and what a lovely hug you gave us both on our last day! If I was to therefore single out the unique selling point of this hotel then it has to be the staff. Our room / departure lounge: We had a second floor privilege room. It was fine. Plenty of storage space and we loved the standalone bath. It was nice to have the choice of a good soak at the end of the day, rather than a shower. The turn down service in the evening was also a nice touch. We also made use of the excellent air conditioned departure lounge on our last day as we were not leaving until late in the evening. It meant that we could have a full day on the beach before freshening up for our journey home. The dining experience: Apart from one bad occasion and some service issues the overall experience was good and at times excellent. The all inclusive menu at the beach La Maree restaurant offered a good choice and there was always a wide range of dishes available at breakfast, lunch and dinner at the main buffet. A nice touch at breakfast time was the hotel produced daily newspaper. As has been mentioned on many other reviews not everything is included in the AI package. This is however explained to you on arrival and also detailed in the useful pocket sized booklet provided. If an item on the menu has a star against it then it is included within the AI package, otherwise you will pay extra, the same goes for certain non AI items in the mini fridge, e. g. Twix bars. We paid a supplement to experience: Fine dining at the chateau (the 3 course meal itself was covered by our complimentary Virgin Tours voucher) we had to pay for the drinks, as they were not included, and in such a venue, expensive!!! Sunday brunch at the chateau - this was our culinary highlight, well worth the supplement of around about £9 each and a great way to spend a few hours, especially as it was raining that day! Steak night at the La Maree - our steaks were cooked to perfection. Again well worth the supplement As we also had a 4000rs credit, (again courtesy of Virgin to spend at the hotel) our venture away from the AI package only cost about £30 between us for our 2 weeks stay. I have mentioned that we had one bad dining experience. This happened at the La Maree beach restaurant during our second week. On the previous occasions we had dined at this venue it had been an enjoyable experience, the service, the meal, everything had been faultless. However on this occasion we felt very badly let down. We are not ones to make any sort of fuss but by chance one of the nice customer service ladies came to our table to ask us if everything was ok, we were honest and said that that it had not been a good experience. Sadly I wished we had not bothered saying anything as shortly after we were confronted at our table by the restaurant manager whose aggressive manner left a lot to be desired and tested our patience even further. Not surprisingly we cancelled our remaining bookings for this restaurant. What we also observed was that the standard of service in certain areas was very inconsistent, especially so at breakfast time. On one occasion it would be exemplary but then on the next it would fall well short of expectations. What we also found when we went down to breakfast early was that routinely not all breakfast items were available, you had to ask for things, for example there was no milk for cereal, no hot water for tea, the egg station was not open. This inconsistency, the lack of attention to detail was something that we found perplexing and frustrating at times. The PAWS initiative: The hotel has four adopted hotel dogs as part of this island initiative. There is a leaflet in the room giving more details about this initiative. Please go and visit them, they are so affectionate and love the attention. I even helped to take them for a walk on a number of occasions, even when it was absolutely pouring it down. Conclusion: We have returned home with some great memories and we are already planning to return later in the year to this hotel so that we may discover more of this delightful island.
Brilliant honeymoon
My wife and I stayed at the Maritim in October 2014 for our honeymoon. It's hard to explain how brilliant this place is in such a short space, but I will attempt to do so. Unlike others posting reviews on here (and the impression given by our travel agent), we were not offered a complementary room upgrade, so don't be under any expectation that you'll get one if you're on your honeymoon (but we did get a voucher for the Chateau, and a free foot massage and 50% off spa treatments). As it happens, our room (a privilege room) was stunning, clean and equipped with everything we needed during our stay. These rooms seem to be closer to the pool, whereas the prestige rooms seem to be closer to the beach. All rooms seem to have a sea view. The resort is made up of 5 restaurants. Of those 5, only 1 is entirely AI based - the Belle Vue restaurant. We dined there for breakfast, which we found superb every day, offering a very wide continental and cooked selection. However, the restaurant's offering at lunch and dinner was largely disappointing. Whilst there was a wide selection at lunch and dinner, on the two different days we dined there, we found the same selection to be on offer. It was also difficult to select items that collectively amounted to a 'meal' - so if you fancy roast beef with salad, rice or chips, you're in luck. As a result, we spent the bulk of our dinners in the other 4 restaurants. Of these, we found the Chinese (Le Banyan) absolutely superb. The selection is excellent, food cooked to perfection, and my wife's nut allergy was treated in the most professional manner we've ever seen in a restaurant: the waiter (Kumar) ensuring that everything arriving at our table was freshly cooked to order without any nuts (or nut oil) used in the cooking process. Huge complements to Kumar, who is a credit to the hotel and made our meals in this restaurant extra special. The beach restaurant (La Maree) was also very nice, particularly given its picturesque setting: we enjoyed possibly the nicest steak we've ever eaten during the hotel's Steak festival. Not only were the steaks the nicest we've eaten, but also the biggest we've eaten! And once again, cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed two meals Les Filaos beer garden, a buffet restaurant with delicious spare ribs on their " Route 66 " night. The staff quite simply couldn't do enough for us and the supervisor in particular went out of his way on each occasion we were there to ensure we had a great meal. We used the voucher for the Chateau on our last night: this clearly is fine dining and didn't disappoint. Again, the chef altered our set menu so my wife's nut allergy was accommodated. This was delicious food but the wine was very expensive (their cheapest bottle was about £36). Although others have posted reviews on here citing difficulties with booking the restaurants, we didn't have any problems. We actually managed to book one restaurant on the same morning, and the hotel seemed pretty full when we were there. We spent all of our time round by the pool - I generally found that you could catch some sun beds if you got to the pool by about 9ish; any later and you won't have a chance until early afternoon. However, there are plenty of beds on the beach and it seemed like you could get a bed there any time of the day. The hotel has a " pool warden " (wears mirrored sunglasses and has a particular 'strut'), he seemed to time how long people left their beds unattended, and if left for more than 90 minutes, remove their belongings. A great idea and nice to see a hotel finally enforce this policy. The staff at the pool bar, and specifically Mo, are an absolute credit to the hotel. Mo made sure our glasses were full at all times, knowing our drink preferences and bringing us a drink without even asking. Absolutely superb service which really made our stay as relaxing and as enjoyable as our honeymoon should be. Also note that you can order food from your sun lounger (burgers, club sandwiches), which are included in your AI package. Because of this, we took lunch besides the pool every day, which was great! The bar area is picturesque, note that there are several different wines available in the AI package (ask for a menu) ; as well as plenty of cocktails and spirits. We also enjoyed a foot massage and a ylang ylang full body massage in the outside spa treatment area. This was probably the most relaxing and stunning spa we've visited (and we've been to a few...) The only criticism I would have of this hotel relates to the credit system in operation in the 4 " non-AI " restaurants. In short, you are give a credit of between 500-1000 rupees (between £10-20) depending on the restaurant, which is deducted from the final bill. My criticism is this: I don't want to be thinking and calculating how much I've spent or need to spend on an AI holiday. I understand why the hotel may want to restrict access to these other restaurants, but I'm sure there must be better ways of doing this. Notwithstanding the above, this is a superb hotel set in immaculate grounds, staffed by some of the most attentive, pleasant staff we have encountered. With the exception of the Belle Vue restaurant, we found the food on offer to be some of the nicest, and most delicious selection we have ever enjoyed. The hotel comes highly recommended and we'd love to return.
Outstanding!
Due to the vast majority of previous reviews recommending the Maritim, we took the plunge and stayed for 9 days mid February. From our arrival after a long trip - Belfast, London, Dubai, Mauritius to the end of our stay, the staff were outstanding in their friendliness and couldn't have been more helpful, to such a degree that it would be unfair to single out individuals. Rooms - with two teenage kids, we stayed in adjoining 'prestige' rooms on the ground floor with a sea view. I know a few reviewers have recommended an upgrade, personally the prestige rooms are very well laid out and were more than adequate. Food / drinks - some previous reviewers have complained about the 'buffet food' in the Belle Vue restaurant and having to pay extra to dine in the other restaurants. Our experience of the restaurant was, yes, you had to go up and serve yourself. However the food was all freshly prepared, was of the highest quality and with a different selection each day. The problem was trying not to eat too much! I have a gluten intolerance and every day the staff would make fresh 'gluten free' pancakes for me at breakfast - well recommended! There are a good variety of drinks included in the AI deal, including great cocktails (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) and lovely liquor coffees as a nightcap Facilities / activities - the facilities / sports available are excellent and there is always something to do if you do not want to chill out by the pool / beach. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the spa area (free on AI) where there is a steam room, sauna and plunge pool - quiet and hardly used for some reason. All in all, a fantastic relaxing holiday. Hopefully we will get the chance to return to Mauritius in the future and would have no hesitation in staying at the Maritim again. PS - If you have a choice, fly with Emirates, like the Maritim, the service was exceptional.
Simply wonderful
We have just returned from the Maritim Mauritius after a 10 day stay having booked the all inclusive package. Travelling on Air Mauritius from Heathrow was a surprisingly pleasant experience, particularly given the number of negative reviews to be found on various travel forums. The aircraft (A340) was old but in good condition and the seats felt marginally larger than the BA 747 we travelled in to LHR. In addition the staff were attentive and the meals pleasant. Arrival at the hotel followed a one hour transfer from the airport by minibus and we were greeted with enthusiasm and warmth that exceeded any expectations. Immediately upon arrival we were taken to a seating area and offered cool face towels and fruit juice, very welcome after a long journey. A member of staff completed our registration cards and explained the many dining options to us before showing us to our rooms. We travelled with our 2 boys, 8 and 10, and had booked 2 interconnecting rooms. The rooms were large, well lit and spotlessly clean and contained the largest bed I have ever slept on. It was approximately twice the size of a double bed and infinitely comfortable. The rooms had patios to the rear (balconies on higher floors), flat screen tv, air con and dehumidifier and free, if painfully slow, wifi across the hotel. Our rooms looked out over a garden area which led down to the boat house and beach area. The beach is stunning and the water, even in winter, was pleasant to swim in. Be wary of the coral sand which is sharp to walk on and footwear is needed to swim. The all inclusive package included most water sports with water skiing, dinghy sailing, snorkelling and glass bottom boat trips included. Also included were most alcoholic and soft drinks throughout the hotel. The staff were superb and made every effort to provide a personal and friendly service. We found the boat house staff to be exceptional and the bar staff likewise. Catering was good for mass scale buffet catering but the belle vue food was good rather than great. I am sure that some of the optional eateries were of a higher standard but the main restaurant sufficed for our needs with kids accompanying. If pressed to find fault then it would be the speed of service during busy periods. I don't know if a reduced staff compliment is employed in off season but it was occasionally impossible to get service at the bar. The only point that I found disappointing was the porters attitude upon our arrival. The hotel has a clear and emphasised policy asking that guests do not tip individual staff. When our bags were delivered the porter stood expectantly, his hand almost outstretched, in expectation of a tip. Tipping is not something I have an issue with but the hotel was so emphatic in this area I found his attitude to be poor. Overall an incredible trip made exceptional by the fabulous staff. The cycle tour is well worth the effort and exploring the ruins of the Balaclava mill is great with kids.
So blieben uns 5 weitere Stunden Wartezeit erspart.
Couldn't of dreamed of a better Wedding & Honeymoon!
I miss the Maritim so much! Me and my now husband decided to get married here after hearing such wonderful things from my Mum and Dad who had previously visited the Maritim. This place couldn't of been anymore perfect. I could tell you how amazing the resort is but everyone has pretty much covered it! It is an amazingly beautiful place and we WILL be going back for our 5 year anniversary. So I will talk about our wedding day. I get chills still thinking about how perfect our wedding day was. On the Monday we met with our wedding co-ordinator Madvi (unsure how to spell her name!) she was INCREDIBLE. Nothing was a problem. We went through flowers, how I'd like my hair, songs and all the other extras. We opted for a wedding DVD and the horse and carriage ride. We did went to Port Lois and did all the paper work, it didn't take us long at all. We were straight in and out. We got married on a Thursday. At 11am I was picked up by a golf buggy to go to the spa to get ready! My dress was there waiting for me, all steamed and hung up. It was such a relaxing morning, I wasn't stressed at all. Me and my Mum had our hair and make up done. They did such an amazing job! I was due to get married at 3:30, I was ready in perfect time and they came to pick me up by golf buggy again to take me to get married on the beach! (Must say I did like that method of transportation!) The ceremony was incredible, everything was perfect. There was a lady singer, she sang 5 songs that me and my husband picked, she tied everything in perfectly. Needless to say I cried my eyes out during the ceremony! After the ceremony had our photos taken (we had a family friend as the photographer) and went to Mon Desir for our reception dinner! The food at Mon Desir was perfect, highly recommend going there for dinner to end your perfect day. The following day we had dinner on the beach at La Maree, they had decorated the table beautifully for us! They even drew a heart in the sand with tea lights dotted around it. The manager of the restaurant (who's name I have forgotten) came and introduced himself to us and told us to ask for him if there were any problems. There was not one problem. The food was delicious. (So delicious in fact that we kept going back for lunch and dinner! the manager remembered us each time we went and he was excellent at entertaining my son with his origami!) We asked Madvi if we were able to be upgraded for a night in the honeymoon suite, we were told that the honeymoon suite was fully booked but management would work on doing something special for us during our stay. Management definitely did something special alright! For the last 2 days of our trip we were upgraded to the presidential suite, it was incredible! We had our own private sauna & jacuzzi along with a second floor with an office! (Yeah we didn't use it but still it was amazing! Could of played a good game of hide and seek in that room!) Would 100% recommend getting married at the Maritim, I would not change one thing about the day. (Photo's that I post are by Red Wellie Photography)
A beautiful holiday
My wife and I stayed at the Maritim Hotel, Mauritius, for ten nights in early Feb and it certainly lived up to the billing. The management of the hotel 5 days in to our stay upgraded our room. For the remaining 5 nights of our stay we were given a luxury family villa with its own infinity pool. Just an amazing gesture from the management. As a result of the hospitality shown to us we spent the remainder of our stay living in absolute paradise. The food was good with a wide choice but the main restaurant could do with better organisation of staff. Being shown to a table could be an issue sometimes. The grounds of the hotel are extensive and a joy with some lovely walks along the beach and also up the Citron River to the ruins, Disree Restaurant and equestrian centre. If you are going to the Maritim be sure to buy some reef shoes as the sea bed just offshore is uncomfortable under foot. The snorkeling was ok visibility good but the coral is quite damaged. There was not a problem with mosquitos but take a repellent just incase and there is always plenty of bottled water on hand. The staff are all friendly, you soon have your favourites, and greet you with a hand on their heart, a lovely Mauritian custom. The water skiing, kayaks and sailing were all free with our all inclusive package. Also the golf course is free though there is a cost for the hire of clubs. The Quarter Deck bar is just a perfect place to come off the beach and wind down with an iced coffee and brandy and watch the sun go down. The entertainment is good and one of the groups that perform are quality. 3 guys 2 of which are father and son and a guy on acoustic guitar. Very worth a mention. All in all the best holiday we have ever been on and thank you Maritim.
fabulous honeymoon
We were on our honeymoon at Mauritian Maritim hotel in November and had a great time. Everything was good organized and we did not have to worry about anything. All we did was enjoy! Hotel is beautiful, spread out and beautiful designed. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. But thing that we loved the best is service. Service is excellent, everyone is so friendly and helpful. It is great that all staff speak at least two languages so we had no problem with comunication. We had a great wedding and wonderful time at Maritim hotel. We will surely come back in a few years to celebrate one of our anniversary.
Nice Place
Hotel was nice and decent. The rooms were comfortable and overlooked the beach. There was greenery. Breakfast buffet was sumptous. There was entertainment in the evenings and we spend nice evenings on the bar on the waterfront. There are activities like bike tour into the sunset, free glass bottm boat trip etc.
Indian Ocean Heaven
We visited this hotel in for almost 3 weeks in September 2004 and had a wonderful holiday. The hotel itself is very beautiful with extensive grounds well worth exploring, river, waterfalls, ruins, giant tortosies. Re the latter you can hold the tiny babies which are very endearing. On arrival the view down from reception is breathtaking. Virgin did us a great deal with almost 3 weeks and a room upgrade (I am a fierce negotiator!). The upgrade room was worth having, both bathroom & bedroom larger, better appointed. Also situation, with its own garden in front, a few steps from beach. Some honeymooners there did not get their expected free upgrade because there were so many of them. I was glad we secured ours in the UK, & we were not on honeymoon. Food - it was lovely to start the day with a fresh made-for-me omlette and glass of Buck's Fizz (I don't do this at home!). I enjoyed the lunch options and found one course on offer quite adequate as I always eat too much on an All Inclusive holiday. The buffet dinner was fine, the Indian night was excellent with food equal only to the Indian cuisine in Kenya. We loved the beach restaurant (La Maree) for dinner, so romantic with excellent food & although not included in AI good value. The gourmet restaurant is more expensive, a fine dining experience but more European in style. If you are used to top-end All Inclusives in the Caribbean where A La Carte restaurants are included you may feel disappointed but this seems to be the arrangement around the Indian Ocean. Drink - local beer is very, very drinkable. We are red wine drinkers & found the AI offering to be undrinkable. There is a good list of New World wines at inflated prices but wine is expensive in Mauritius, even in supermarkets. Bar drinks - again, if you are used to AI with all premium brands included you won't find that here but there is a good overall choice. They do a wonderful Kir Royale but my husband's Brandy Alexanders ran out after the first few days, we could never find out why! A great way to see the island is a helicopter flight. You are up for a full hour & excellent value compared to costs in Europe. If you're up for a challenge a brilliant day out is Reef Fishing. A great guy called Dominique collects & takes you to the south of the island where you cast into the reef for Kingfish etc, in competition with the sharks who wold like to get the fish first, surrounded by the amazing scenery of Morne Brabant. The hotel can arrange this for you or EMail domtevno@intnet. mu. I thought the beach was beautiful. Yes it does have small 'sharp bits' as mentioned by another reviewer but bear in mind the Indian Ocean is full of coral, it does break off & wash onto the beach (nature!). The sunsets from the beach are amazing. I loved being served a cold beer to my lounger & the cold towels brought to me when I was lazing there. Pampered! I agree with the reviewer that the flies are no worse that in UK, Europe & many places. Remember you are in the tropics. I love to eat outside in such places & I know there may be other creatures joining me (nature again!) I found the service to be excellent but discrete - no 'Have a Nice Day!' The people I found to be genuine. On leaving we were approached by one of the senior Managers to see if we enjoyed our stay - we certainly did & would recommended the hotel. Sad to see negative reviewing. I think it is wrong to compare with hotels in the Americas or Europe. Each continent is different. This is Africa, it is very different & those differences are what makes it special. Any qs, welcome to EMail me.
A serious warning regarding dogs!
I had very much hoped that this review would not be necessary but, in view of the serious public safety issues involved, which sadly remain outstanding, feel a duty to make people aware of our experience. My sole motivation is to encourage a change of attitude and procedures by management, so that risks, in particular to children, are minimised. My family and I recently spent a holiday at Hotel Maritim, a German-owned property that is popular with Brits and which features with the major tour companies, most notably Virgin. We chose this hotel because of the positive reviews and, indeed, found the facilities pleasant and of a good 4 Star standard. My only reservation from initial impressions related to the almost total lack of use of the hand-sanitiser in the main, buffet restaurant. After a day or two we became aware of three dogs that patrolled the hotel's beach and adjacent public areas. However, there were no warning notices and the hotel staff seemed not in the least concerned; and it appeared the dogs belonged to the hotel or had been adopted by Maritim and were not a potential danger. That assumption proved to be very much unsafe when my grandaughter, age 8, was attacked by one of the dogs and bitten! The attack was totally unprovoked and, indeed, when the child had her back to the dog. I learnt subsequently that it was well-known that such dogs could potentially be aggressive. After some brief confusion regarding the presence or otherwise of a nurse, the hotel's initial response was both prompt and caring, and my grandaughter was rushed to a local clinic where the wound was dressed and antibiotic administered. The subsequent response of Maritim was less reassuring and raised serious questions as to the hotel's priorites, particularly as these related to customer safety. Initially, the manager shrugged off my request that the dog be detained with the words " This is Mauritius, not Europe ". And she maintained that there were no means available for dealing with the dog although, when it became clear that I would not relent, this position changed and action was taken, albeit somewhat randomly. Similarly, there was an unwillingness to warn other customers as to the potential danger from this dog. Following the incident, a letter was delivered to each room commenting generally on the " alarming " problem of stray dogs and their " unpredictable " behaviour. But at no stage were guests made aware of any specific danger and that a child had actually been attacked, and nor was any description of the dog provided so that it could be avoided. I was so concerned at the complacency and inadequacy displayed by Maritim that I put in a call to the CEO in Germany, a Mr Prochaska; and, having heard the circumstances behind my concern, he assured me that an investigation by an independent manager would be undertaken. It took four days for Maritim to deal with this dog, four days in which it became painfully clear that the hotel had no established, efficent procedure for dealing with a dangerous dog. And over those four days the dog was sighted strolling within the hotel's grounds and resting on sunloungers unhindered. Indeed, on two mornings it was on the grassed area immediately outside our rooms, and this was despite the manager's assurance that the dog was under " continuous challenge " ! Following my return to the UK, I emailed Mr Prochaska for sight of his investigation's findings, specifically on the three issues most directly relevant to customer safety: 1. Whether Maritim's laissez-faire policy in regard to stray dogs is acceptable, as it places its guests at risk? What we now understand to be Maritim's " animal-friendly " credentials appear to be in direct conflict with its primary duty of care to its guests. 2. Whether its procedure for dealing with a known, aggressive dog is of an acceptable standard? I would suggest that a dangerous dog on the loose within the hotel grounds for four days is totally unacceptable. 3. Whether Maritim should warn guests far more prominently as to the danger from dogs? And when an attack has occurred, surely such warning should include a description of the animal concerned, so that guests may take appropriate action to avoid it? I have received no response from Mr Prochaska and it has become clear that, in fact, no independent investigation has been undertaken, despite what I took to be his sincere assurance. Instead, the matter has been left in the hands of the General Manager at the hotel, a Mr Peter Edler. Despite repeated requests, he has proven unwilling to address the three specific issues that I have raised; preferring simply to make general assertions such as " we all know what and how to manage guests, staff members and the daily operation " and " we have the experience and knowledge how to operate a hotel with our standards ". I must beg to differ on the subject of dogs. It is, perhaps, predictable that Mr Edler is uncomfortable with the issues raised at his hotel and one must question whether he is the right person to form an open and dispassionate view. That was the very purpose of the promised, independent investigation. Revealingly, Mr Edler has also chosen not to respond on an issue of hygiene relating to his own dog, which appeared to have free run of the hotel and was seen urinating on the back of two chairs in the bar area and annoying guests, us included, for food. Mr Edler has made it clear that Maritim consider the matter closed or, in his words, " wish to end now the correspondence ". Accordingly, it seems clear that Maritim have no intention of reviewing their animal-friendly policy and associated procedures. I believe this to be complacent and an on-going risk to guests, particularly those with young children. Readers and tour companies will form their own views. At least I feel I am making some effort to make the public aware, as far as I can, so that prospective guests may be forewarned, as I wish we had been.
Maritim Hotel, Mauritius
We travelled to Mauritius with some friends who were getting married at The Maritim Hotel. We thought we had arrived at the wrong hotel becuase it was so elegant. The view from reception was just breathtaking. Our room was big enough considering we were only planning to sleep there. The grounds were very well kept, lots of flowers and trees. The food was just fantastic, We tried so many new things that we would not even have considered trying at home. We ate crocodile and so many different types of fish, we can't even rember them. The service was excellent, all the staff were really friendly. The wedding ceremony was out of this world. The organisers could not do enough, from planning where the service was being held, to booking the hairdresser. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
5 Star Maritim
We spent 2 weeks at the Maritim between 24 Sep - 9 Oct. We had not visited Mauritius before and were very impressed with the friendliness of the people and the fantastic scenery and beaches. As far as the Hotel is concerned we thought that it was excellent value for money: fantastic service, great food, very good facilities and loads of room on the beach. The Marie Restaurant on the beach was the best but the main one was almost as good, especially on al a carte nights. The gourmet restaurant was expensive and you have to pay for your drinks - wine is only really available by the bottle, and it is pricey. Quite odd when you can get an 'all inclusive' drink for free just a few yards away but you are not allowed to order your 'free' drinks from the bar during your meal. A pity that the hotel do not impose the dress standards at night and allow shorts / tee shirts to be worn. There must have been at least 2 weddings a day but the Hotel grounds are so big you hardly notice. Water sports are excellent, although snorkelling is not as good as expected as the coral reef is dying away in some places. The views and sunsets are brilliant, the beach vendors are not very persistent and the cocktails are great, especially at sundown. The resort is a little cut off from civilisation but this is great if you want peace and quiet. There are loads of excursions available, the Hotel offers a boat trip to Port Louis, the capital, which is a much better way of travelling there as the traffic around the city is horrendous. Overall a wonderful holiday in a superb hotel with very friendly and efficient staff. We will be back!
Amazing place
My husband and I stayed at the Maritim from 1st Feb for 10 nights. This was our first visit to Mauritius and I'm hoping not our last, it's a beautiful Island and lived up to my expectations. First things first, we flew from England with Emirates and had a short stopover in Dubai, this was my husbands idea and although I was not too keen on not flying direct I'm glad we did the break. Emirates were brilliant and the flights suburb. We arrived in Mauritius at approx 10 am and after a fairly speedy process of immigration etc we were in the taxi and on our way. The resort is approx 1 hour by road, we had the most marvellous driver who gave us a brief history of the Island and it's people, this really helped the time pass and before we're knew it we were at the resort. First impressions were very good and the lobby and reception area are large and airy. We could see the India Ocean through the balcony area where we sat drinking our welcome cocktail while we were checked in. A young lady took our paperwork and passports, this whole process took no more than 30 minutes and we were given a briefing about the resort, dinner times, and how the AI worked. As we were both very tired some of this did fall on deaf ears but over the next day or two we soon worked out what was what, this was helped by the staff who were always ready to point you in the right direction? We were told that normally we would not be able to check into our room until 3pm, but because the hotel was not fully booked we could go directly to our room. We were in room 216 and it was fabulous. Large bed, huge bath, lovely shower, 2 sinks and the most amazing view from the balcony. I was very impressed with the space and the facilities. During our stay we had no problems at all with the standard of the service in respect of our room, it was cleaned every day we had plenty of towels, which seemed to be constantly changed along with the bedsheets. The mini bar is checked every day and re stocked if need be, plenty of bottled water and milk for tea and coffee. The service is very discrete and some days we didn't see them coming or going, but if we were in the room they always had a chat and were polite and cheerful. The food was amazing, as were the cocktails and drinks from the bars and beach service. We always managed to find something we liked and I was very happy with the choices available. Breakfast was yummy and the fresh fruit was something else. The beach was great and the sun loungers were the most comfortable ones that I've ever experienced on holiday. You get a card for your beach towel and can change them whenever you require, but they do stress that if you don't get the card back at the end of your stay you don't get your deposit back. The service on the beach was good and once the guys get to know you they make sure you don't ever wait too long when your glass is empty. There are guys on the beach selling trinkets etc but they are not a bother and can be fun to talk to and pass the time of day with. The watersports are very well organised and my husband made use of the waterskiing which appeared to be very popular but if you wanted a turn they made sure you got one. Take a walk along the river to the ruins and the equestrian centre, it's well worth it and the ruins are beautiful and well kept. In fact the grounds of the resort are very well maintained and very pretty. We always managed to get a sun lounger each day, but I think it was perhaps slightly out of season and in general the Hotel appeared to be very quiet, which was lovely, but I can imagine when it's full to capacity it might be a different story. The staff were always on hand to ensure that your stay is enjoyable and the service was fantastic, this was the case no matter where you were, from the beach guys, house keeping staff and bartenders, there is always a smile and bonjour. In my experience if you are nice to people they are nice back, I did see some guests being very rude to the staff and maybe they are the ones who write negative reports. We were very happy with the level of service and never experienced any problems with any of the staff. If you expect somebody to come running when you snap your fingers perhaps you may not always get your service with a smile. I would not hesitate to recommend this Hotel to anybody and would be more than happy to return one day. We loved Mauritius and its people, perhaps when we come next time we will get to see more of the place and what it has to offer. We felt very chiled by the time we left and I will always smile now when I hear the word " Mauritius ".
A great place to stay
We stayed at the Maritim for 10 days in February 2011. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds; after following the long drive through the grounds, you see the sea through the open reception area. Beautiful. Check-in was quick and easy: we received cold towels and a non-alcoholic cocktail. The card system was briefly explained to us: you have your all-inclusive meal card, which you need to present when ordering a drink or having food; your room keys, and the towel cards. They make a big deal out of the towel cards - you have to pay if you cannot present them on leaving. So never discard of your used beach towel without asking back for it. After receiving some information about the hotel, we were taken to our room. The room was beautiful, on the ground floor, with direct beach access. This was fantastic; the only downside was that as it was a Priviledge room you could not unlock the patio door from the outside. This meant either not making the most of the access, or leaving the door unlocked. We left the door unlocked, and did not have any problems; but I think this is a missed opportunity to make the room even greater. The room was very clean, the bed big and comfortable, the minibar well stocked, and the bathroom was amazing, with sliding walls to either open up or close the bathroom. The toilet was separate, the bath free-standing, the shower big, and there were two sinks. Room service provided fresh towels twice a day. Bathrobes and slippers, shampoo, shower-gel and moisturiser were provided. The hotel also provides free bottled water in the room and bars, which was great. Aircon was fine, not too loud, and very efficient. We only ate in the belle vue restaurant. There was a hotel orientation speach the next day after our arrival, but it did not cover such things as where to look for menues for the day for the other restaurants, or prices. Breakfast is provided from 7.30 - 10.30 buffet style, with life cooking stations for eggs. It also covered everything else from full English to German breakfast. Lunch from 12.30 - 15.00. Ususally, enough food to find something to eat, although probably very restricted choice for kids or vegetarians (or anyone not eating sea-food or red meat). Dinner from 6.30 - 10.00. The hotel has a menu that is the same every week - if you stay longer than a week you get the feeling that you have already eaten everything on the menu. Desert choice at lunch limited, more at dinner. Service was mixed. Sometimes the service was absolutly fantastic, very attentive and quick. Other times they tended to ignore you, you had to wait for a long time to be seated and then again to order drinks; which sometimes did not arrive until desert. However, staff were always very friendly, and when the service was good, it was very good. I think there are also snacks served in the Quarterdeck bar, and possibly the beach restaurant, but that was not that clear to us. The beach is not the smoothest, but nice enough. It is divided into three sections: the watersports section to the righ to the jetty, the first beach section between the jetty and the beach restaurant, and to the left of the beach restaurant. We usually spent time in the middle section (as this was were we had access to from our room). Plenty of very comfortable sunbeds (with very thick cushions). No problem getting a sun-bed (and the hotel discourages reservations). Fantastic service from the beach guys, who really looked after us. Although it started off slow with the drinks orders, once we had been there a couple of days they would come round quite often to take orders. Some sunloungers also have flags. You have to sign every time you order something, but this did not bother us. We liked the no-tipping policy, which made the stay very relaxed. Tipping is done afterwards into a box that benefits all staff. Generally, the standard of food and drink was very good; I certainly enjoyed the wine and cocktails included in the All Inclusive option. The hotel has its own reef (about five meters into the sea), which means the sea does not look that nice light green colour. But it does make for great snorkeling. Either borrow gear from the watersports guys, or bring your own. Very relaxing just to float and watch the fish. The watersports centre has pedalos, waterskiing, doughnut rides, sailboats and kajaks. We took out a hobie cat, but the wind in the bay was difficult to sail to. We also took out the kajaks, and instead of taking them out to sea, we took them up the small river that divides the hotel from the next. stunning, and well worth doing. The hotel grounds offer a nature walk to the waterfalls. You walk along the river, get to the ruins (well worth visiting), and follow the path through the forrest to the waterfall. Very exciting, and you don't even have to leave the hotel grounds. We then wondererd over to have a look at the giant turtels, the petting zoo, and the equestrian centre. The animals looked well looked after, the horses were stunning, and the turtels fantastic. Well worth the effort (and there is also a shuttle that takes you to that end of the property if you don't want to walk). What especially stood out was the staff during the cyclone. Although the cyclone in the end bypassed Mauritius, the hotel staff were calm in taking the preparations. The beach was evacuated, the windows taped up, the patio furniture brought into the room, water and candles left in the room. Dinner that night was in a meeting room. You were seated 10 to a table (randomly), but staff still managed to put on a buffet, and serve drinks with a smile (despite the fact that they would have families and houses to look after as well). Breakfast the next day was served in the rooms, and lunch was a set affair in the meeting room again. When we did not like any of the two options (no vegetarian option), the cook made up something for us. Quite a boring day, but staff tried hard: a dart board and small crazy golf challenge was set up in reception. For dinner that day, everything was back to normal. All in all, calm and collected response, and they seemed to know what they were doing. There are a number of small shops in the hotel, and one offered custom made shirts for men. We had one done, and although the first try did not turn out perfect, the second one did. Well worth the money. We had wifi in the room, and on the beach. Possibly not the most wheelchair-friendly place (quite a few stairs). Guests consisted of pensioners (a lot of German and French, some English), some honeymooners, some families with small kids, and other couples. This is not a party place, so if that is what you are after, this is not the place for you. However, it is a very relaxing place perfect to recharge your batteries, set in amazing grounds. Overall a fantastic hotel, and I would go again, knowing what I know now. Why not five stars? The buffet was somewhat repetitive, and some of the service was rather slow, and it would have been fantastic to unlock the door from the outside (once the cleaner locked us out, and it took forever until reception sent us someone to let us back inside). For some reason, sometimes over breakfast they played rather loud dance music. Mauritius is a beautiful place, and staying here, you will not be dissappointed.
What a Great Holiday!
A group of 9 of us stayed at the Maritim for 12 nights in October 2005. Our group included my parents (who had visited the Maritim twice before), my husband and me and our five year old son, and my brother, his wife and their two children aged 3 and 1. What a fantastic holiday, and what a great hotel! A measure of our enjoyment is the fact that we are going back next year - the first time I have ever wanted to go back to a holiday destination again! We had prestige rooms, very close to the beach. Ground floor rooms are best as you can use the patio doors to go in and out - if you have 1st or 2nd floor rooms, you need to go around the 'back' of the building to reach the stairs. The rooms themselves are very spacious with plenty of cupboard and drawer space, a settee, a huge double bed and an extra single bed for our son. The bathrooms are the nicest I have EVER been in - walk in shower, separate room with WC and bidet, two basins and lovely big bath. We tended to use the beach rather than the pool as the kids enjoyed the beach more (and the pool was quite chilly at the beginning of our stay, though it warmed up towards the end). The beach is quite spacious with plenty of loungers and parasols (if you tip the beach attendant, they will reserve your chairs for you first thing in the morning). People reserving seats around the pool was a problem, as has been mentioned in other reviews - on the morning we left, we department from the hotel at 6.20 am, and several chairs were already reserved!!! The pool itself is a lovely big infinity pool, very nice indeed, and has a swim up bar. Food - overall standard of food excellent. We had breakfast in La Maree (the beach restaurant) each morning, which you can use for breakfast when staying in the prestige rooms. Lunch options include a la carte in La Maree, bar snacks in the main bar, and a la carte / buffet (alternate days) in the main restaurant. We tried all three options, but enjoyed La Maree best. Evening meals are mainly buffet style in the main restaurant with plenty of choice and a good variety of themes. Twice a week it is waiter service, rather than buffet, again with a choice of menu. We also tried both the a la carte restaurants in the evening - Mon Desir and La Maree. We enjoyed both, though the service was quite slow, the standard of food, particularly in Mon Desir, was excellent. I would highly recommend having an evening meal in La Maree on the beach - the atmosphere is just lovely. Drinks - we particularly enjoyed the cocktails - you can't beat a pina colada at 11.30 am on the beach (!) - and there was a good choice of these on the all inclusive menu. House wine, both red and white, was very good. The kids loved Orangina and drank it by the gallon! Drink service in the main bar was sometimes very slow pre-dinner, even though it didn't seem very busy. Beach drink service excellent - and they also bring round cool flannels - what luxury! Kids Club - run by Ghislaine & Sophia - both very friendly. Our 5 and 3 year olds enjoyed going to the club, and there was a weekly programme of activities including outings, pony rides, face painting, DVDs, etc etc. There weren't any other children in the kids club during our stay which was quite disappointing (and surprising as it's such a great facility, and there were quite a few children staying in the hotel). There is also a little playground outside the kids club. We had a babysitter for the 3 kids every night - Sophia and Ghislaine took it in turns. Cost of this was £2 per hour, plus £8 transport cost each night. Definitely worth it to have an enjoyable evening! Staff - all the staff (with the very occasional exception) were pleasant, friendly and efficient, and went out of their way to be helpful. Tortoises - near the main gate is the 'farm', which has an enclosure with giant tortoises - they are 250 years old!! Well worth seeing - and the kids can ride them (arrange through the kids club). Actitivies - water skiing, snorkeling, glass bottom boat all free of charge, and well worth a go. My husband did a PADI diving qualification while he was there, the diving staff seemed very efficient and professional. Golf - nine hole golf course on site at the hotel - my father and brother played a couple of times - cost about £8 including clubs and balls. Entertainment - evening entertainment was low key - bands, occasional dancers etc. Quite pleasant but nothing special. Overall, we all had a fantastic holiday, and I would highly recommend the Maritim. It is a very popular hotel for weddings (at least one a day!) and honeymoons, but we found it a great family destination as well. I can't wait to go back next year!
Excellent hotel, but do take the all-inclusive option
From the moment we entered the reception of the hotel (following a long overnight journey from the UK), we were made to feel totally at home and relaxed. The lovely Navada from Customer Services sat us down to take care of the registration formalities, and explained over a welcome drink what the various options and facilities were, and also that we had been upgraded to a prestige room (210), which was a nice surprise. There was also a free 30-minute couples massage in the spa. I suspect that all the rooms are more than comfortable, but the one we were given was on the first floor, and overlooked a small river that runs underneath the Southern part of the hotel, and opens up into a small lagoon before running into the sea (next to La Maree beach restaurant). This was the view from our balcony which was fantastic, with visible small fish, and a variety of colourful birds. The room was large and airy with TV, wi-fi, sitting areas, and a separate bathroom with large bath, 2 wash baisins, doored toilet, and walk-in shower. The room was kept very clean and tidy, the towels were changed regularly, and the mini-bar was always replenished I think the all-inclusive options have been extended and improved both from what Navada explained to us, and from what we had read in previous reviews, so this is what was included:- All food in the Belle-Vue buffet restaurant, which has a different theme each day, repeating weekly. There is also " Sushi Corner " on the lower level which operates every night. The AI offerings on the wine list are marked with an asterix, and typically would cost you around 1000 Mauritian rupees (c. £24) per bottle if you were paying directly. There is a good selection with four S. A. sparkling wines, incl. a rose, plus 4 each of white, rose, and red still wines. Most of these are very drinkable, and much better than most wines I've experienced in other forms of inclusive deals (incl. Mark Warner). The same asterix system is used in the bars, and as well as some local brands, includes cocktails, and the likes of Gilbey's gin and Courvoissier cognac (which can't be bad). The mini-bar works in the same way (you only have to pay for the snacks, and the sparkling wine which is not one of the standard AI offerings) You can also have both lunch and / or dinner in La Maree. The lunch menu uses the same asterix system, which is about 80% of what is available, and includes 3 or 4 starters, and similar numbers of salads, mains, pizzas, and desserts. Lunch is a particularly pleasant experience here, with suitably laid-back entertainment, and particularly friendly staff (thanks guys). In the evening, they have a set menu for AI, with a couple of options for each course. You can also opt to eat off the a la carte using a 750rps pp credit (we did not do this, as the standard options more than suited our taste). The credit in the " fine dining " Chateau Mon Desir " is 1000rps pp, but this would probably only cover about 20% of the high prices, particularly as all drinks are additional. On the positive side, CMD did appear to be a very nice up-market restaurant, and did get very good reviews from the people we met who used it. We would probably have been tempted by the Valentine's Day menu if the food in the other 2 restaurants had not been so good and varied. Pretty much all the activities are included except for (as you would expect), SCUBA diving, and horse riding. This includes 2 trips daily to snorkel in the marine park that starts on the north side of the bay, golf green fees (bring you own clubs to avoid hire charges - a couple of clubs and a putter should do), tennis (just bring your own balls), and water skiing. The best snorkelling from the hotel beach is to the left (South) of La Maree. You do need to be fairly competent to get out to the best coral and fish, towards (and beyond) where the waves break on the reef. Be particularly alert at low tide as there are some very shallow parts with many sea urchins. In terms of the beach, I noticed some previous reviews complaining about the " rocks ". This is a volcanic island in the middle of a tropical coral sea!! You may of course get a few pieces of smashed coral, but it was never a problem to walk bare footed. There is also an exposed shelf of rock that runs up the shallows in the middle part of the beach, which becomes exposed at low tide. Most people just seemed to splash around inside this, but it is easy enough to go round, or swim over when there is enough tide, so no probelm really. If you have never been to Mauritius before, I would recommend hiring a taxi to the South-West of the island, which can be arranged through Customer Services (3, 500 rps - I was quoted the same figure from an external cab, so this seems to be the going rate). You effectively have the cab for the day, and can specify what you want to see (although the driver will know all the haunts), and can stop off for an hour or two maybe for lunch (just agree this with the driver before you leave). Finally, I would just like to say a word about the staff. I have not mentioned anyone by name as this would give the impression that those not named were somehow inferior. All I would say is that all the staff were exceedingly friendly, helpful, and made our stay an absolute pleasure. We were also there when cyclone Giovanna narrowly missed the island (200km North). There was a fear for 48 hours or so, that it might change course and hit us. The staff (despite probably being worried about their own homes and families) coped with this tremendously well, and brought in all the gear from the beaches and bars, secured the windows, and rearranged one evening and one lunch time meal in the conference centre (plus brought breakfast to our rooms). All the staff, including senior managers, worked shoulder to shoulder with no panic or complaint. Very impressive. In summary, this was a terrific experience and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone visiting Mauritius.
Outstanding
Just returned from 2 weeks at the Maritim, but before I start my review I feel I must respond to the comments of Anita and Nickandtash below as I think they must have been at a different hotel. Anita - The hotel is in one of the closest areas to the Island capital Port Louis. Airport pick-up can be arranged as we did. No credit card swipe was made until the end of our stay. Island and resort maps are readily available. Food seems to be on a 10 day turnaround including Indian, Mauritian and African, as well as European with lots of taste, flavour and variety. The number of stairs, like any hotel, is entirely dependant on which floor your room is on but if you are disabled then you can get from reception to the beach and pools without having to use any stairs and the porter picked up our luggage at the required time. No towel deposit was taken. Water is freely available throughout the day. Cannot comment on the WIFI or the business centre as we didn't use them, because we were on HOLIDAY. Restaurant service was very good. Nickandtash - Grounds are extensive and well kept. The beach is real with extensive soft-ish sand for which the hawkers say is one of the best in the area, certainly better than the Grand Mauritian and the Plantation which are either side of the Maritim. The sea is clear with about 20 feet visibility most of the time unless weather dictates otherwise, the rocks - why would you want to walk on the rocks, not that there are many, or do you mean the coral, which you shouldn't be walking on anyway and if you do have to walk on the rocks then what do you expect, wear shoes, no-brainer! The pools are available to be used 24hrs, apart from one morning when someone had thrown some soil in the pool, so it was being cleaned, you could always use the other pool or the spa pool or the sea, again no-brainer! The rooms are spacious and well equipped and very clean. The food is good and on a 10 day turnaround in the buffet, all inclusive options are available in the other beach restaurant, the bar also does all inclusive snacks, the none all inclusive restaurant is expensive, but why bother when there's so much other choice. Entertainment is always a matter of taste and in this case I would say it is not cheesy; the dancers can actually dance the singers can actually sing and they can also play their instruments very well. Can't really comment on you forgetting to ask for your chain back, but I think if I had a massage from someone who removed my chain I'd have asked for it as soon as it was removed and I'd have been able to identify the person who removed it. My review of the hotel - friendly greeting on arrival with a cold towel and a fruit cocktail, 10am arrival meant room wasn't ready but by 11am it was. Reception staff very informative and eager to please, porters readily available, upgraded room very spacious and clean, cleaned daily and with turndown / extra towel / extra water service, mini-bar is included in all inclusive apart from snacks and sparkling wine (strange as sparkling wine and snacks are included as all inclusive at the main bar which you can take back to your room). Main buffet restaurant has plenty of choice, Indian, French, Italian, African, Spanish, Mauritian, BBQ, Chinese, Fish, are just a few of the themed foods but on each of these nights there were others to choose from including beef, chicken, pork, rice, pasta, potato and other vegetable dishes, soups and an extensive range of salad dishes, along with starters and desserts, something for everyone, all to a good buffet standard. One thing that I hadn't read anywhere on tripadvisor or at the website is that in the evening the restaurants only allow trousers / jeans for the men, shorts or longs are strictly not allowed and they turn you away, however their policy of also not allowing sleeveless t-shirts or normal t-shirts was not adhered to - a bit of a double-standard there, either have the policy and stick to it or just don't have the policy at all. Early breakfast is available from 04:30am. Beach restaurant is waiter service and has all inclusive options, the Chateau-mon-Desir restaurant is expensive and not all inclusive, we didn't feel the need to try it. The main bar, the Quarterdeck, was very well stocked and the service from Anusha was outstanding. The beach service was also very good from Deepak, where food and drink can also be ordered all inclusive. There are a few licensed hawkers, but if you don't want anything then they don't pressure you. The sea is warm and clear with plenty of sea life and lots of live coral. There are plenty of free watersports with good instruction from the staff. The 9 hole golf course could do with some maintenance attention on the greens and is a bit pricey at 650 rupees to hire a set of clubs, so if you intend to play everyday then its probably worth paying to take your own clubs and balls, as the green fees are free for all inclusive. The star rating, which in the UK is all based on the range of facilities available (not level of service) is probably under-rated for this hotel, especially when you consider it has all the above as well as pools, bars, restaurants, shops, cycles and mopeds, a horse riding centre, giant turtles, an old sugar mill ruin, tennis courts, gym, games room, archery, spa with pool, steam room and jacuzzi, a couple of heli-pads, a water sports centre and a dive centre as well as a children's play area and mini-golf - again the mini-golf could do with some maintenance attention. I would say that the hotel is more couple-friendly than family-friendly, as other than the limited play area there isn't that much for young kids to do. We had 2 days of cloudy weather which we spent touring the island, the rest was 30-35 degrees at the beach. (Don't do the submarine trip as you can see much more snorkelling off the beach, instead get a private taxi and tour the island, we also heard the catamaran trip wasn't worth the money, but these opinions are obviously not related to this hotel review.) Despite my previous concerns, we didn't see a single mosquito. We had a couple of midge bites but this was due to an early evening and un-deeted visit to the bar whilst still in beach wear, but the ammonia stick sorted those out. No other insect related issues. Mainly attracts English, German and French. All in all a great holiday, my compliments and thanks to the hotel and staff and we will definitely be returning.
Still a marvellous hotel!
We never go anywhere twice - we have just returned from our 3rd visit to this hotel! (admittedly interspersed with trips to other countries over a period of 6 years). The Maritim is a small'ish hotel - it feels personal and people know your name (and your children's names). The pool is nice and clean, with plenty of sunbeds and towels. The beach is white sand, one or two polite hawkers, and also has lots of sunbeds and bar service available. We only had 10 days available for our holiday in December and I asked the family (active husband, 2 active boys - 16 and 12) where they wanted to go. The requirements were sunshine, lovely hotel and food and plenty to keep everybody happy - they all said The Maritim and I had to agree. The first thing to say is that you must go 'All Inclusive' (AI) if possible. It is the only way to relax and enjoy your holiday without worry. What was even better was that the quality of the service throughout the hotel has moved up a notch or two since we were last there. From the welcome we received on arrival to the manner in which we were given tables at dinner - it was all very good. They have certainly endeavoured to gear up to their 5 star rating. The food is very good. Our family enjoyed the buffet in the main restaurant for most meals - the 2 boys like to be able to pick and choose on what they see. The breakfasts and lunches were good - all of the usual and with fresh eggs and omelettes cooked to order. Dinner always included a grilled dish (steak, lobster, fish, chicken), roast meats, curries, pasta dishes etc, as well as starters such as sushi, salads, cold meats and huge variety of desserts if you could fit them in. The curries were wonderful - a selection every night. The beach restaurant is smaller and more intimate with nicely presented individual dishes. It is great for breakfast and lunch - sitting by beach and watching the birds. It is less good for AI for dinner as the menu is very limited - I guess they want you to use the buffet - but the food was still lovely. There are snacks available throughout the day - cakes, tea / coffee etc. There are two other restaurants which we didn't try - mainly because you have to pay quite a bit more (even with your AI allowance). But reports were good. Wines are South African in the main and mainly good. The fizzy Rose was very good. The spirits were known labels and all of the usual cocktails were covered. Only the liquers weren't really catered for (for somebody who likes cointreau after dinner). But they weren't overly expensive (about £4?). Lots of beer etc. The reason my boys enjoy it so much is because there is so much on offer and included in the price - windsurfing, kayaking, catamarans and most of all - the waterskiing is included and is available all day - you have a go at waterskiing, get out of the water and put your name down on the sheet for another go. If there is nobody waiting then you just go back out again. My 16 year old mastered wakeboarding - with the marvellous help and patience of the friendly waterski guys. Our 12 year old managed to get up on the waterskis and stay up, after a go on the fixed arm - he loved it. The PADI dive centre on the beach by the hotel is manned by wonderful people - Judax took our 12 year old through his PADI Open Water course with such patience. This is a lovely place to take your diving certificate. The Spa is lovely (but expensive) - similar to top UK hotels for treatments. But remember that you can make use of the Spa facilities without booking a treatment so do wander in for the Sauna, Steam Room, daybeds under the waterfall and some really painful treatment involving walking on stones through a stream! The towels are provided. The Bedrooms are lovely and spacious - we just had standard rooms - our boys next door and interconnecting. Every room faces the sea. We requested a quiet room and it was great - close to the dive centre. We didn't use room service. Much of the mini bar is included in AI and there are delicious treats delivered daily to your room (chocs, savoury bites etc) and the usual turn down and towel replacement service. Entertainment wise, there is something happening every night and some lunchtimes too - whether full on dancers and bands in the evening or solo musicians at the beach restaurant. Never too loud or intrusive. This is not Las Vegas but it is entertaining and just enough after a tough day of enjoying yourself. We dont play golf so we can only tell you that the golfers seemed to be having a great time. Horse riding on the beach looked great and you can visit the stables, the goats and, most spectacularly, the giant tortoises. There is crazy golf which was a laugh and table tennis on the beach. This is also an historical site (Balaclava) and worth a wander around. A lot of weddings going on too. Seemed to be very well run and beautiful setting. But it never interrupted our holiday apart from admiring the gorgeous outfits. We used the gym every other day - it has most things and there is certainly no reason why you can't exercise whilst at the hotel! There are morning jogs, power walks etc if you want to do that stuff too. The transfer time from airport to hotel is about 1 hour.
Amazing!
After a lot of research, my husband and I visited the Maritim in May 2005. We read the reviews and were hopeful that it would meet expectations. We were not disappointed! We arrived after a long flight to a gorgeous setting. We were greeted with a cocktail and cool towels. Check in was quick and easy, and we were driven round to our room. It was ground floor with lovely views of the well kept gardens. The room was lovely - spacious and with welcome fruit basket etc. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The beach was lovely, although the snorkelling was not fantastic. This really was an all inclusive - we couldn't get through the cocktail list - and the food was absolutely fantastic! We were never disappointed, and we are food lovers! We visited Mon Desir twice - it was fantastic. It does cost extra but it is such a romantic setting it was worth it - especially the scallops and chateaux briande! We really can not say enough about the service and general attention to detail here. Everything was catered for. The gym and sauna / plunge pool / steam room were all great - we used them every day and they were never busy. The massages are also a great way to relax. Watersports are also included and were never busy. We tried deep sea fishing and caught some large tuna but we were so sea sick we were past caring at that stage! In sum, this is a fantastic hotel - there were lots of weddings but this wasn't a problem. The evenings were very quiet. and the holiday would probably suit couples looking for a quiet, relaxing break. There isn't much to do outside the resort except odd days shopping etc. It was mainly Brits and Australians, with a few South Africans.
Relaxing and pampered
Arriving at the hotel after an overnight flight, the welcome set the standard for our holiday. The cool refreshing towel and glass of fruit cocktail was presented whilst our registration details were confirmed. Our room, a junior suite, was avaialble despite a 11.00am arrival and we were transported together with luggage to our room. What a room it was, certainly had the wow factor. Roomy, airy, well furbished and extremely comfortable, even had a de-humidifier already working which together with the air con made the room pleasant and cool. A nice surprise was the bottle of champagne on ice waiting to greet us!. We had a variety of daily chocolates and canapees delivered to our room every afternoon. Throughout our holiday the staff, there are no adjectives really to describe them, apart from very helpful and friendly with nothing too much trouble for them, were fantastic. If you want fast service this is not the place to visit, for the hotels concept is for you to relax and enjoy without wanting to, or feeling rushed. We cannot rate the levels of service highly enough. In the Belle View resurant the tables were laid out in such a manner that there was never a feeling of overcrowding, so nice when you consider how some other hotel resturants are often laid out. Food is varied at the main Belle View resturant, some evenings Al a carte others buffet with occasional theme nights when the staff dressed to the theme. At all times the food was very well presented, especially on the Al a Carte evenings. Having taken a junior suite we were able to take breakfast at the La Maree beachside resturant, the breakfast, being freshly cooked, overlooking the beach and lapping sea was a superb experience. Lunch again was taken at the beachside La Maree where again the food was freshly cooked, nicely presented with excellent service. The beach was cleaned daily and the beach loungers were large and comfortable again being cleaned daily. The beach team came round regularly to enquire if drinks were required and again the service was excellent. One very nice touch was the cool hand towel that was offered by the beach team about 1.15 pm. The beach towels were available to be changed daily and were of a high quality and very clean. Evening entertainment is low key, there is a regular band with singers, who enjoy nothing better than guests dancing on the dance floor and appreciate guests requesting special songs to dance to. Some eveings there were special events, local dancers and a jazz band suplimenting the regualr band We requested and were able to have a late check out (6.00pm) which ensured we could shower and change ready for the long journey home. All in all this was one hotel and location we did not want to leave and is certainly very high on a must revisit list. All I can say here is a very big thank you to everone at the hotel who made us feel special, with superb service and dedication.
Great place to stay!
My husband and I have just returned from a week's stay at the Maritim and what a great hotel! The hotel's set on vast grounds and there's so much for you to explore and do. (Having read all the good reviews beforehand, we kinda had high expectations and we were not disappointed one bit!). In general the hotel is immaculate and the service is second to none. The staff were all very friendly and always keen to help, which is what makes this place so good. Yes, the view in reception is fantastic, so is the little touches like a cool tropical drink and towel on arrival. We even had a complimentary fruit basket in our room! We stayed in a comfort room with a seaview, which was very nice indeed. The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. It was definitely adequate. We stayed on a half-borad basis which really suited us as we don't drink very often so we couldn't justify paying double per person in supplements for the all-inc!!! (Different people will have different needs). The drinks and snacks at the quarter-deck bar were all reasonably priced for a hotel. (It was really nice to sit there for a relaxing drink and what a view!). Ok food: The buffet breakfast were fantastic because they had so much to choose from and having such a large meal in the mornings, it really lasted throughout the day! We probably only managed 2 lunches out of our week's stay!!! So again glad we went half-board, if we did all-inc, we would have felt we had to eat and drink what we paid! As for dinner, we only ate at the main restaurant which was mainly buffets. However they do provide an a la carte menu 3 times a week so that was nice. There were always so much to choose from and not once did we get bored with the food. It was definitely not repetitive! They even had theme nights for the buffets i. e. Indian, Mediterranean etc. Nice. To eat at the other 2 restaurants you had to pre-book at reception and the prices seem again, reasonable. The hotel provided a list of activities (sent to your room), which you could join both free and paying ones. I thought this was really good as you could plan ahead for the week what things you wanted to do. Some of the activities included a sunset bike trip along the beach, information walk around the hotel grounds, archery, free golf lessons, scuba diving etc etc. If like us you had a late night flight back, it is worth requesting late check-out at the time of checking-in. The hotel will confirm whether it is ok 24hrs before and they will charge around 20 pounds if you request 6pm check-out. Although we stayed during their low season, on the day we were due to leave they had a function where most of the rooms were taken. So we paid 25 pounds to stay in a prestige room unitl 6pm. This was def worth it. If you don't fancy paying then the hotel can keep your luggage for you and you can book a shower room to use. This way you can still sunbathe or whatever, wash and then leave. You get to use the shower room for about 20mins or so. The only thing we were disappointed with, was the beach as it wasn't that nice. It's not a white sandy beach, it's actually very corally and sharp. The sea wasn't that clear either so hence we stayed around the pool most of the time. Another thing we definitely recommend is the sea-bed walk, that was a fantastic experience! You wear a heavy breathing helmet and then go to the bottom of the sea, about 3m deep. Then you get to feed the fishes and walk around!!! (Don't forget the under-water camera, a must!). All in all we had a very good stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. We stayed in the Oberoi last year, although a very luxury hotel, it was a bit too quiet for us. So this year we chose a good quality hotel with lots to do. We wanted a chill-out week so we never did much apart from sunbathing around the pool. Oh and the pool IS cold but nice when it gets too hot. Enjoy!
Made my wedding better than a dream!
We went to the Maritim, Mauritius from 22nd August 2005 - 5th September 2005. We took 19 adults and 4 children with us to celebrate our wedding abroad! The hotel was amazing, very clean, the staff over friendly, the drinks cold and the food very varied and delicious. It amazed me how quick they were at serving you, we would finish a drink and the waiter would be there to re-fill it! We as a group began counting how long it took them to remove a finished plate from the table and the average was 30 seconds! The beach was very corally, but so smooth you barely noticed, and the fish were amazing to snorkel with. If you fancy a lesson with the watersports - go fot it, they only cost £6 for an hour and the instructors are very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a Prestige room which was amazing we had the biggest bathroom you could imgaine with a seated shower and twin sinks. The bed itself could have slept three people with space! The views are all out to the sea / gardens, but our view had mainly gardens. Our guests stayed in the comfort rooms, we did noticed that the sizes seemed to vary in them, my brother with a wife and two kids had a small room whilst two single friends had a room which was lots bigger! If you have kids, there is a great turtle club which is great for the kids, but I recommend you upgrade your room, the comfort rooms are too small for more than two adults! My wedding was out of this world, the entire event was incredible. The wedding planners acted as though it was their wedding and were very precise at detail! They didn't miss a single thing out! The Mon Desir restaurant is amazing, I had a 5 star ala'carte dinner with a pianoist in the background! The entertainment is on every night, but on my wedding night, they gave us a real good party, we all were singing in the microphones and dancing to all the music we requested - it was better than having it in England! The photographer was incredible - he had our prints to us within 2 days and they looked great. They again put lots of effort into how the photos looked and made sure my dress and hair was right. The minister whom married us gave us lovely vowels and all together they made our wedding 'heavenly'. My only very small gripes: The rooms all face the outside, so when its raining (which it did most nights meaning it was clear and hot for the next day) you can get quite wet walking to the restaurant (or when its stopped raining - your feet in your sandals). The cocktails had a big vary between who made them, they could taste really nice, but also really strong. A few of my guests asked to have stuff without the cream (which suprisingly tasted really nice). The evenings are very self entertaining with a show on, but after a while they became samey, but hey we had some interesting card and trivial pursuit games. The corals made it hard to do some sports i. e windsurfing as I experienced falling on them whilst learning and cutting my foot. There are a few stray dogs around, so if your scared of dogs be wary. And finally - we didn't stay longer than 2 weeks!!! We don't ususally go back to the same place twice in fact its against my ruling, but we WILL return to Mauritius and go to the maritim if not before for our 10 year anniversary (and yes we'll be asking all 19 guests and the 4 children to join us). If your looking for a good agency to book through Mauritius.com (part of travel centre clapham) were incredible! They didn't mess a single thing up (and for 19 very fussy adults that was impressive)
Wonderful Resort, Superb staff
We stayed here 26th May for 11 nights in a Prestige room on the top floor (Rm430). All rooms have some sea view, and ours was wonderful with views of the wedding gazebo, gardens & sea. The room itself was excellent, with a great feature of sliding bathroom doors so you can have it open-plan, and a walk-in wardrobe to hide the cases. The AI package includes SOME of the mini-bar, but not the sparkling wine (£30!) nor snacks (oh how that Twix looked tempting), so don't get caught out. If you want one particular type of item more than another just leave a note and they will do this (we asked for 4x diet Pepsi instead of the orange and regular Pepsi; this was remembered daily). The white wine was vile, and no red wine which is a shame. Food - there are so many options and choices of packages and restaurants it is no wonder people are confused. Firstly men need long trousers at night in all restaurants (and closed-toe shoes plus collared shirt / polo at The Chateau) so pack appropriately. We spoke to at least two who had to go out and buy some. Main buffet (Belle Vue) for all meals and 6 days a week serves a buffet for dinner, 1 evening it has a set-menu served at your table (soup and salad still from buffet). We enjoyed this evening although of course the choices are limited. La Maree (beach restaurant) - Prestige rooms and suites / villas can eat breakfast here (served rather than buffet). We did this twice but preferred to be able to choose the hot items, and as they bring you juices, jams, breads and you choose a hot item if you want so some items went unused and presume wasted. Lunch - AI can eat here on a 'set' menu with choice of starter, main & dessert. Dinner - again AI can book here, and it's a set-menu although they also do a la carte and a set-price menu so a little confusing. You can also buy the Gourmet Pass and choose items with a chef's hat off the a la carte. This restaurant also does special nights (steak / lobster night) at an extra cost. There is also a 'German' BBQ just behind La Maree, not marked on the map they give you. Good choice of meat / seafood here, plus some items you can pay for (ribs / steaks). The Gourmet Pass (GP) - costs 2, 950MUR (5, 900 per couple=£125 @ the hotel rate of 47MUR to £1GBP) for 3 vouchers, plus you can purchase extras for 1, 000 per couple, or you can buy 6 for either 9, 500 / 9, 900 (I forget which) - either way if my math is correct you would find it cheaper to buy the pack of 3, then buy 3 extra vouchers total 8, 900? The cost of 6 would therefore be about £35 per meal per couple. If you then use these at the Chateau Môn Desir, this provides fantastic value for money as some of the menu dishes are quite expensive (£30 some main courses). Also it provides you access to your AI drinks so you can choose a bottle of wine from the AI menu at no extra cost (I believe their own wine list is very expensive). We have read reviews of people complaining that they paid £200 a head at the Chateau, and cannot understand why they didn't just buy the GP? We ate there 3 times and it was fantastic each time; the service, ambiance and food are all First Class. You can also use the GP at the Chinese (La Banyan), the Creole (?) & La Maree but the value is obviously less but still better than what you would pay if choosing from the a la carte menu (the Creole is a set menu with a cost of I think 1, 100 so it's marginally cheaper to use the GP, but still better to save them for the Chateau). At La Maree, La Banyan and The Chateau you choose items with a chef's hat (90% of the menu). If you choose to go to any restaurant without the GP then there is a contribution towards the bill or a charge for a set-menu. OK now onto non-food matters; The beaches are wide with plenty of beds in the sun or shade; there is also the option of the 'posh' beach which you get to go on if you are in a suite or if you pay €20 per person per day! We thought this expensive, but I suppose it depends on your POV; you get white towels, sparkling wine, proper glasses, tables and bespoke waiter service, plus lunch at your beds, and it is more centrally located. On the other beaches you have a blue flag that you place in your parasol to ask for waiter service, and they are very quick to respond with beers, soft drinks, and some snacks (there are small wooden menus dotted about). The staff here are all very friendly and efficient. There are beach sellers selling jewellery, sarongs, shells etc, and from what we heard their prices were not as cheap as the shops we saw in Port Louis. Watersports - the hotel provides glass-bottom boat trips, snorkelling trips (with free equipment), and pedalloes / kayaks all part of the AI, plus you can pay for jet-ski's for example, but we never saw anyone using these as they charge a ridiculous amount (£60 was mentioned; tip for hotel, charge half as much and people may actually use them, false economy charging so much). Bars / drinks - The main bar is the Quarter Deck (actually there is just this bar and the beach-bar at La Maree, there is no lobby bar). There is a large menu of AI drinks, but in the main it's not top-shelf brands (Smirnoff Red and Martini are the main well-known brands included). But still the drinks are OK, with plenty of cocktails, and coffees etc on offer. They also have 3 lovely bar-snacks (Banana chips, curried sticks, and nuts). The Quarter deck bar has great views for sunsets, as does the beach bar, and both are highly recommended. The staff are nice here too. Piano music is played and the atmosphere is relaxed. Staff - perhaps the high point of the hotel. They are all very friendly, and will help you with anything you need. Too many examples to name one person only, but we really liked the young smiley-guy on the main door who drove us in the buggy to the Chateau, he really shows he enjoys his work, and is a great ambassador for the Hotel. Excursions - The Summertimes rep provided some useful information and showed us the trips they had to offer, but when we spoke with people on the beach we found them to be twice as much as those you could get by approaching one of the beach sellers (e. g. Nicolas 'Clarke' roams about the beach two or three times a day when security don't kick him off!). We paid £47 a head for an east-coast catamaran trip including Isle des Cerfs (7.30am start, 5.30pm back at hotel) with drinks and BBQ lunch provided, and found this to be excellent VFM; the same trip with Summertimes was £87 each. It's obviously not sanctioned by the hotel, but the trip is exactly the same - everyone we spoke to who had been on one of these trips had no complaints (although don't let them have you get picked up at the end of the beach, far too much of a hassle). We also hired a car (off the internet with Maki Cars) and this was cheap at £56 for 2 days (petrol cost us about £20) for a decent car. They can provide a sat-nav for about €3 a day, highly recommended as whilst the roads are good, the free map you can get at reception just doesn't cut it for driving. We had a couple of 'moments' getting lost in Port Louis rush-hour was not much fun at all. There is plenty to see on this island so you really do need to either go on organised excursions or hire a car and do-it-yourself; the other option is to hire a private taxi driver for the day for about £80 (the hotel will arrange this for you) - we saw several of these 'trips' going on and they seemed to be very good at showing people the sights. You can also order a packed lunch from the hotel 24 hours in advance to take with you. Tip - the coloured sands of Chamarel / Waterfalls (same attraction place) is well worth a visit (strangely odd that there is quite a drive from the entrance but bear with it the road only goes one way) ; the cost is only about £4 a head and I'd also suggest that the little outside café they have provides some very cheap food and looks new and very clean, and would make a nice lunch / snack opportunity.
Exceptional in every way !!!
Recently returned from a 7 night stay (9 January 2012) at the Maritim and can honestly say it was trully wonderful. Everything about the Hotel is fantastic and i will try to detail as much as i can. FIRST IMPRESSION- Very secure premises, Locked Gates with security who check everyone entering the hotel, lovely 1 minute drive to the Hotel where you are greeted by a lovely entrance, you get a great feeling when you arrive (like you have made the perfect decision) CHECK IN- Greeted as soon as you step off from Taxi, car etc from very smiley attentive staff who take care of your luggage give you a refreshing cold towel and show you into the hotel lobby where you will immediatly see the the beutiful Indian ocean in the distance calling you (time dependant of course) !! Check in was pleasant and efficent and all the better for the ice cold cocktail given to you while the staff take care of the checking in. ROOM- We had booked a Prestige Room and though slightly more expensive definatly worth the extra. Large Room decorated in a very nice manner, Beutiful bathroom with a walk in shower and a free standing very deep bath, double vanity area stocked with good quality shower gels, soaps etc. Hairdryer provided and socked for electric shaver, seperate toilet room with bidet, There is a partition sliding door that can be closed for privesy or open it up and the room seems like a small studio apartment. Very Fluffy large towels (changed daily) Walk in wardrobe with plenty of storage space and a good sizes electronic safe. Huge Bed very comftable with lots of pillows (had the best sleep) Television i think 40 " with a couple of english speaking movie channels as well as bbc world news and several french and german channels. Mini Bar in room which is stocked with soft drinks (coke, fanta sprite and juices as well as Beer, Wine. (This is part of the all inclusive and replenished daily!!!!) Huge Balconey with sliding doors which has a table and 2 chairs. You have full length shutters on the inside which give you complete privacy and let in no light if you like sleep in a very dark room. I would think most rooms have a very good veiw towards the ocean though some may have the odd palm tree obscuring it a little which was the case with ours, still beutiful though. HOTEL PREMISSES- Immaculetly presented and very clean a few little souvenir shops, jewellers and shop where you can buy toiletries (of course a little more expensive than normal but not horrendous and to be expected in a hotel like this) Wifi though out most of the hotel and all rooms, very reasonable speed and more than adequate for general catching up wih things and emails. Tennis courts, Golf Course, Archery feild, all very well kept. Swimming pool very nice free form with a small infinty area over looking the ocean, maintained very well. Lots of greenery all again very well kept all paths well lit and maintaned, fresh flowers in all guest arears. RESTURANTS- We had opted for the all inclusive and were very happy we did. Breakfast served at the main resturant had everything you could possibly want. Cerials, cooked meats (Bacon, Sausage) Eggs (fried, boiled and scrammbled) Cold meats and cheeses, fresh bread, croissants and an assortment of bread rolls. Fresh fruit (everything imaginable) particulerly Passion fruit and coconut. Fresh Coffee and tea and fruit juices as well good quality Cava. Every day they have specials like waffles or crepes as an added bonus. Breakfast can be arranged at the beach restuarant also. Evening meals at the main resturant brings varierty with local dishes mixed with international cuisine and i would say there is something for everyone. Beach restaurant has a stunning location on the beach and has some great meals on the menu, again a lot of the dishes are availble on the AI these are clearly labeled and you do get a dining credit in the evening. The Chatueu Restarant is amazing with beutiful food served in a stunning location, again you get a dining credit in this eatery though drinks are not included, can be a little pricey but well worth a treat, you should be able to have a stunning meal for 2 with a bottle of wine for £100 / £150 based on a 2 course meal with a decent bootle of wine. The main Bar area is lovely overlooking the ocean and great place to watch the sun set (trully stunning sunsets) Again the AI has lots of drinks to choose from including my wifes Favourite (Kia Royal) and mine which was a very good local larger as well as Bannana Rum!!! All coktails i had were very nice and they are very generous with there measures, i would ask for a rum and if i ordered it again they would simply fill the glass!! STAFF- Very, very attentive without being overbearing. Always smiling and always helpful. Everyone greets you so nicely with the customary Maurituan Hand on hart gesture which is beutiful, never stayed anywere were the hotel staff were this nice!! BEACH- Beutiful kept beach with a lovely white sand and warm sea which is very gentle, a range of water sports offered by the hotel like water skiing wind surfing (included) again very attemtive staff to talk to you about whats on offer. SPA- Heaven on earth with a lots of treaments on offer, coplimentary use of facilites like Sauna, Steam room and plunge pool, very tranquil and a nice place to unwind, immaculate. TOP TIPS- There are no irons in the rooms though if you speak with reception they will show you to a room where you can access an iron (i did not find this out till the last day and used the hotel ironing service which was very reasoable and efficient All inclusive very good value considering everything you that get. SUMMARY- Wonderful Hotel and would definatly return again, service was perfect and if you wanted to be spoilt to not hesitate to book a stay
10 Days in Paradise - Not Long Enough
Having read the numerous mixed reviews of this hotel, I shall try to give as fair and accurate a review as possible. Travelled as a couple, Stayed 10 nights 11 days in December. The Review shall be broken down in to key areas making it easier for potential guests to understand what they should expect. Arrival We flew overnight with BA and arrived 2pm local time, were greeted with a cold towel and lemongrass tea to refresh after flight, room was not ready yet and had to wait until 3pm to get into the room. This was ok as we have been to other resorts (Ravenala, Zilwa) on the island and this seems to be the normal procedure. I can understand that this may frustrate other guests but we were fine, by the time we had finished a coffee at the main bar the room was ready to go. Room We booked a prestige AI room and stayed in room 330. It was a lovely location with view of sunset on the palm trees and lush gardens each night, I am aware other rooms have a direct view of the beach, we did not, but this didn't bother us as the room was very well located.... close to central hub of hotel where most restaurants and the main bar is located. The room itself was very spacious with a very large bed (I am 6ft 4 and could lie horizontal on the bed and still have space). Bathroom was fitted with large stand alone bath and separate shower with high quality marble throughout. As mentioned we have been to other resorts on the island that are newer, I feel that the room in the Maritim despite being slightly older looking was much more spacious and suited us better. I feel that the room whilst being slightly older looking than other newer resorts we have visited, (Ravenala and Zilwa) has been the best yet. It offered the most amount of space and luxuries that you would expect when coming to a 5star resort. The only minor fault with the room was the poor quality of WIFI signal, I often found I would have to reconnect several times to get online. However, throughout other areas on the resort the wifi is strong. However, for us the majority of the time spent on holiday is outside of the room therefore amenities and activities on offer are more important. Food Coming to the resort I had read more than a few mixed reviews regarding food. I have to disagree with those who say the AI packages are confusing or that there is a lack of choice. We would eat most evenings around 8pm after sunset, this seemed to be slightly after the busy period, it suited us as we could take our time and there was no problem booking restaurants for this time. Having read that it would be difficult to book restaurants, we booked all of our dining choices on the morning of the 2nd day of the visit, again no issues at all in securing bookings. We visited Belle Vue (the main buffet), La Maree, Le Banyan, Les filaos and Chatau Mon Desir. Quarter Deck Beach bar was our spot to sit with a drink and watch the sunset at 6pm. Again prior to arrival I was unsure about what options were included on our AI package, It is very simple and clear on each menu what options are included and those that are not. We also found the choice of the options included in the AI to be varied enough, a couple times we did make the decision to pay extra, and were not disappointed, the prices were very reasonable when comparing them to what you would pay back home for such quality and flavour. Each restaurant is broken down as follows: Main Buffet There is a theme each night, plenty of choices available and a good mix of food, I am not a particularly fussy eater and was happy to try most food on offer each night. During the day we ate here often as an alternative to beach food or sandwiches on offer at the quarter deck bar. There wasn't as much choice here as there was in evenings, options were alternated every 2 / 3 days so it became slightly repetitive, however there still was an extensive choice, it was good to get out the sun for an hour and make your own salad or have some burgers / hot dogs with a cool drink. La Maree There is an A la Carte menu as well as themed nights. We went on Wednesday on the " fish market " themed evening. Opted for sea bass and snapper which was not included in AI package, but worked out at about £20 in total for both of us. Can not praise the food and staff enough, was sensational.. a must for anyone visiting the resort, evening was made even better by fantastic singer going round tables playing requests, a truly nice touch. Le banyan Visited twice, both times having AI options, lovely freshly prepared Asian food. Staff were very nice and ensured drinks were topped up. We had chicken curry and fresh tuna, was lovely and made us return for a second time. Les Filaos We ate here twice, there was the option for steaks included in the AI package, was cooked perfectly and the service was fantastic, will go on to discuss this later on, had the highlight of the holiday due to Eric and Nawah... truly exceptional members of staff who could not do enough for both of us. Very casual dining, feet in the sand and benches instead of table, this was a nice change from the formal settings of other restaurants. Chateau Mon Desir A visually stunning restaurant located away from the main hotel near the ancient ruins and equestrian centre. We booked for 8pm on sat and were driven by buggy from reception to the restaurant, this was a nice touch as the grounds and entrance were lit up and looked fantastic. The food was exceptional, truly fine dining. We ordered a chateaubriand which was prepared at the table and was one of the best I have ate. Meat was tender and was cooked perfectly. The dining was not included in AI, I had chose here to celebrate a birthday for my partner, whilst it was expensive, we were both happy and again the food and the service was extremely good value for money when comparing it to what we would get back home. Quarter Deck Bar Perfect place to relax and get out of the sun or have a drink after a meal in the evening, there was an extensive choice of drinks available on offer, staff would ask what you preferred and make recommendations based on your preferences. Planters punch, Bamboo surprise and café creole were particular favourites of ours. I am a smoker and there was a good selection of cigarettes on offer, separate smoking area to enjoy a drink and a cig after a good meal! Staff here were on the whole great, at points service was slow however this did not bother us as the setting was nice and staff were friendly. Hotel Activities and Grounds The number of activities and things to do that are included in the AI package is truly amazing, we struggled to do everything within the 10 day holiday.. It is here that the hotel really stands out. The highlight for us is the number of watersports available, we had chosen the hotel because these were included in the package, we used the wakeboard and waterski facilities maybe 3 / 4 times a day each and were coached and encouraged by all the boat house staff to improve and get better. By the end of the holiday we were both comfortable trying tricks and jumps and were made to feel like friends with anyone who was on the jetty. There was a party atmosphere each day on the jetty and waiting for your turn was just as much fun as being out on the water. I would like to thank Fabiano, Alvin, Ruddy and Alex in particular who looked after us and were exceptional at teaching us out on the water. The hotel must ensure these guys are rewarded for their exceptional service and friendliness. We also used the spa facilities which offered daily Yoga and Pilates sessions free of charge, classes were a nice mix of challenging positions and relaxing positions. The sauna and steam room were also available free of charge and provided a nice place to unwind after a day in the sun. The spa is a short walk away from the reception and is located in a beautiful garden. We also visited the Equestrian centre and were able to visit the horses, and see giant tortoises. This was amazing and was great to have all on the one resort. On previous years we had made trips to see giant tortoises at the national park, I felt that the experience at the Maritim was better as you could get closer to the animals and were able to feed them at 11 and 3 each day. There is also a 9hole golf course on site, we did not use this however I had heard from other guests it was a great course, with a good mix of challenging holes within well kept grounds. The pool areas were kept clean and had a good number of sun beds, however I would recommend getting up earlier to pick the bed you want, as these are often gone by 9:30. The staff make regular visits to make sure each guest has enough water or drinks, this was welcomed and after a few days staff would recognise you and remember your order without even asking, a nice touch again. We spent the majority of the holiday either by the pool or out wakeboarding, we did go for walks along the beach at sunset. However as I am someone who cant stand sand getting into everything, therefore we preferred to be based around the pool area. There are so many things to do and see at this resort that makes it great value for money, I believe that the hotel has endless amounts of activities on offer, it is truly hard to keep up with everything that is going on. I also made use of gym facilities that had everything needed, it was quiet early in the morning, perfect to get a workout done then head out to the sun. Staff Throughout the resort staff are friendly and will do their utmost to make your stay as best as it possibly can be. After our 3rd visit to the island it is this friendly nature and relaxed attitude that has us returning each year. Visiting, we are made to feel most welcome and this feeling is the same at the Maritim. Finally I would like to make a special mention to Eric and Nawah who are based at the Les Filaos Restaurant. We dined there twice, on the first night the two of them had us well looked after ensuring the food was good and the drinks were flowing. They kept us laughing all night and could not do anything more for us. Whilst chatting we had discussed a Mauritian lychee wine that we had tried a couple of years ago on our first visit to the island. The two of them took it upon themselves to go and get the wine for us from the local supermarket on their day off. We were then invited to the restaurant on our last night where they presented us with the bottle. We were astounded by this act of kindness and generosity. It truly went a long way and made the entire holiday, moments like that shall stay with us for a lifetime. Top class from two young men who could have not been better at their jobs. Again showing us how kind and generous the Mauritian people are. Animals There are a small number of dogs and cats who are around the resort, they were not intrusive at all. As animal lovers, we were relieved to find out that the animals are fed and looked after by the staff at night time. You are able to arrange to take the dogs for a walk in the morning if you contact the equestrian centre. Weather It unfortunately rained for 1 of the days, however it quickly passed and we were met with the perfect sunshine and blue skies that have kept us returning to Mauritius for the previous 3 years. Location The hotel is located in a stunning bay, perfect for watching sunsets and enjoying water activities. The hotel is a short boat ride from a protected coral reef that was home to 8 or 9 sea turtles, well worth a trip which can be arranged through the boathouse. We were able to swim with them unrestricted and also feed them... another experience that will last a life time. As the title of the review says, 10 days was not enough. We were truly made to feel like we were part of a bigger family on the resort, and wished we could have had a few more days to enjoy it all. I appreciate this is a lengthy review however I hope this helps clear up any confusion or questions you may have about the resort. If you have the chance, book this resort. It may need a little refurbishment and modernisation in some departments but what is on offer from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave truly makes up for this. We will be returning next year for 2 weeks instead of the 10 days!!
Experience is the best teacher
As Members of the Maritim Partner card scheme and having holidayed in numerous Maritim hotels, when it came to booking our 3 weeks on Mauritius we insisted with the travel agent that we would only stay in a Maritim hotel. You never get a second chance at first empressions. After our 24 hour flight and 1 hour drive to the hotel we were looking forward to cool drink, quick hotel arrival brief then room, shower, unpack and relax ready for the holiday to start. At the arrival brief we were told there was a 4 hour delay on getting into our room. Fair enough busy hotel so chill in the arrival / departure room. Eventually in the room there was a constant smell of urine, the reception staff assured us it was the aircon and would clear up after a couple of hours. It never did. Betwèen the 30 Dec 14 & 4 Jan 15 our room was not cleaned which resulted in myself having to walk round looking on other floors for cleaning trollies in order i could aquire clean bath towels. I reported this repeatedly to reception to which the generic reply came back yes it will be done immediately (never happened). On one occasion we came back from the beach to collect our sun tan lotion to discover the cleaner in our room cleaning, what a surprise. We stood and watched in awe as the cleaner washed the toilet bowel then our cups, glasses and bench tops all with the same cloth. At the pool 1730hrs a pool attendant closed the parasol umbrella above our deck chairs. I asked him to leave it as the sun is at its hottest at this time of day he said no from management all to come down. On the 01st Jan 15 after eating in the Château Mon Desir the night before, bang. vomiting & diarrhea. I called the reception and asked what was the medical procedure for reporting sick. I then had to walk to reception as again immediately never happened. The reception called the Doctor. Upon his arrival he ask what is the problem and do you have cash on you. I went to the reception the next evening and reported all this to the duty manager after i waited 1 hour for the duty manager to speak to me. We lay in our room without eating for 4 days only drinking water that i was going to the resturant to collect and take back to our room. After speaking with Maritim management we were told we must have caught a bug from some were else. We only eat and drank on the hotel premises thats why we booked all inclusive, which is not as it is advertised because 50% of the all inclusive menu we had to pay for which to me is not what we paid for. (IE) paying twice. On the check out bill was 1 phone calls billed to my room although i never called no one. We called our travel assistant and asked for an immediate hotel transfer to hopefully try and get our holiday back on track. As we waited for the transfer we stripped the bed and disvovered to our horror we had been sleeping on a urine stained mattress, hench the smell of the room. The whole Maritim Hotel Mauritius experience for us we believe is tantamount to dishonesty, false advertising and exstonate rates for the experience. We travel frequently and have never stayed in such an unhygienic dirty filthy hotel in our lives. The German standard promised we discovered was only the price of our stay. Upon our return home we will cancell the Maritim Partner card and our association with Maritim hotel chain as we have now learned from Experience just because it says manager as your job titel it does not mean you are a manager.

We got married at the Maritim in September 2005 and were amazed by the hospitality and beauty of this wonderfull hotel and island. Our wedding was well planned and exactly as my dreams imagined. Ourselves and our twelve guests would all agree this was complete perfection of a holiday from arrival to departure. Yes there is not much in the way of entertainment on an evening, but we're not into full on cabaret or quiz nghts like you get in some places. Just a bit of live music was fine or a quiet night down at the beach bar supping cocktails - what more could you ask. As for daytime activities there's plenty at the hotel or hire a taxi for the day. Get out and see the tea plantations or the waterfalls. Take a trip to Grande Baie shopping or the boat to Port Louis for an exciting time in the market. Or go up in the helicopter for an hour.. expensive but well worth it for the views. We even went to the botanical gardens (not normally my thing) but a great day. Hire a guide here - they know everything and bring the place to life. As for the food. I can't believe some reviews say there is not enough! You can eat as much as you want at the buffet. The food is first class in all three restuarants but I would agree that sometimes the service is slow... never mind, you're on holiday! PLEASE wear reef shoes into the sea. My father stood on a sea urchin! Ouch.. very painfull but the on-site nurse was brilliant. One last thing.... when you visit, take some fruit from breakfast and walk up to the turtles near the main gate and feed them for us. They are huge and so comical. Take time to look at the old fort too with the waterfall running by. Lastly, go and enjoy. You won't regret it.
Perfect wedding
We have just returned from our dream wedding at the Maritim Hotel in Mauritius. We could not have asked for a better location and it is definately one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed. We could not find fault with anything, from the check in to the rooms, the beach, the food. We stayed for a week along with some friends who also found the place a dream. The wedding went exactly to plan and we can highly recommend getting married there. The hairdresser and florist were both great. The wedding co-ordinators ensured the whole day went without a hitch. The beach location was fantastic, a wooden pergoda with white linen drapes and a live band playing (they chose the songs but I am sure if you wanted a specific song they would play it). But best of all was the photographer (Abbinash) who captured the whole wedding perfectly and gave us the best wedding photo's I have ever seen, including some great sunset shots. The swimming pools are lovely with the best sun loungers I have found anywhere!! The food was lovely, a mix of buffet and set menu nights. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard and high quality fixtures and fittings. All in all we could not have asked for more and we will definately return for our wedding anniversary in the coming years.
fantastic wedding
In november 2000 i was married at the Maritim, we travelled there with two friends our bridesmaid and best man, what a fantastic hotel, they made us feel like royalty!! We chose the maritim because it only had one wedding a day at 4pm, so it felt like it was your day, and not shared with 15 other couples like a cattle market!! The day itself was magical, we had a horse and carriage, and a guitarist it was so romantic, myself and my husband have never cried so much!! the ceramony was lovely the minister said such lovely things, after the wedding we walked in the grounds of the hotel along the swimming pool then along the beach for our video and pictures, all the guests stood and clapped and congratulated us, by then it was 6pm and the sun was setting, what pictures to finish the day off, they were magical!! we had a great a la carte meal included in the wedding package, tshirts, wine, flowers, wedding cake, on the whole it was a fantastic day the maritm did us proud!! And we even got a fantastic wedding breakfast in bed the next morning!! The hotel was A1 no faults whatsoever. The hotel, food, staff, beach, everything 10 out of 10!! we would definately go back!! thankyou maritim for making our wedding and honeymoon truly memorable xxx By the way our bridesmaid and best man concieved our god daughter while here!!!!
Total Relaxation Carole from Milton Keynes
Having read the previour review I felt compelled to write and reassure anybody who is thinking of going to the Maritim. When I was booking the holiday to return the Travel Agent asked if I had been before. When I confirmed that we had, she said that she had so many enquiries for this particular hotel she was curious to find out more about it and was desperate to go herself. The fact that it is in the top 100 luxury hotels of the world as rated by Conde also tells you something. We visited in February last year for 11 days, it was heaven and when I arrived home I was so relaxed I felt I was floating on air. As many, many people have written, the staff were wonderful, we felt that we hardly lifted a finger the whole time we were there. My husband was recovering from an op and used a walking stick, many times a waiter was by his side to carry his plate of food. We thought the buffet was good, the Indian evening wonderful, but no way did all the food taste of curry. I enjoyed the fresh fish, salads and many other dishes. We dined at the restaurant on the beach many evenings, it was so romantic with the water lapping round our feet. The food here was excellent and beautifully presented. The wine was included in the all inclusive package, so it was only a few pounds extra, worth every penny. We visited the fine dining restaurant twice and were delighted with the food. Everything about that restaurant was really special and yes we paid for it but we were amazed to find that it was about £60, you would pay double that for a meal of that calibre in England. We have lived in Europe where we have dined at the finest restaurants, have travelled extensively so feel very qualified to make a judgement on the hotel. We are off to the Maritim again next week, and I can't wait to be there, the vision of dining on the beach keeps me going through these cold, dark winter days!!!
Holiday of a lifetime
I cannot begin to decribe how fantastic my holiday in Mauritius was. The Maritim hotel is far the best hotel I have ever been to, and don't get me wrong, I have been to some beautiful hotels. The pure fact that the Maritim is so fantastic is the staff. Never have I experienced such a welcoming nature, and a constant freewill to make your holiday as relaxing and pleasurable as possible. From the moment you drive through those front gates, and see the hotels beauty, flowers, trees, perfectly groomed gardens, you realise you are in for a great holiday. My family and I stayed from 23rd July-7th August 2004, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. This is one place that I would definately return to, and I have not found that with many hotels. I will recommend the Maritim hotel to anyone. The Bar is far the best attraction, followed by the amazing spa. The food is fantastic and hosts a number of cuisines, from Mexican to Chinese and hotel activities are packed full of different things for everyone. The golf course is also fantastic, and I would defintately recommend the helicopter ride, although I did not actually go on it, but I heard that it was a great experience. We made some great friends thanks to our stay in the Maritim hotel, and we have kept in very good contact with all of them. The entertainment at night even let us get up and have a sing. There is so much for the family to do, and something for all ages. I am 15, and I had plenty to do, as did my parents and the capital, Port Louis, is a great place to go and visit. Watersports are brilliant, many to do, and many to go unmissed. My only complaint is in the summer, the pool was freezing! However with all that sunbathing (and drinking!), there wasn't much time for a swin! The sauna simply MUST be visited too, there are many different things you can go and experience for pure relaxation! xxxMuch love to all the staff at Maritim, you are the essence of the hotel. Love Gemma xxx
Money stolen from locked safe
Really enjoyed our stay at this all inclusive resort up until we noticed that some money was missing from our safe. As we were all inclusive we had spent very little money and could account for every penny and were puzzled why a significant sum of money was missing. After lots of double checking we reported it to the security manager who did investigate and ran through a routine check on when the safe was opened, which showed nothing out of the ordinary but we were adamant that this money had been taken so we pressed for it to be reported to the police. The police did attend and took statements from us and additional evidence was collected that proved an unauthorised entry to our room and the safe being opened immediately after this entry. Our stay was in early November last year and we have waited until now to post this review because we thought we'd give the hotel and police time to investigate but as yet we have heard NOTHNG from either the police or the hotel which is extremely disappointing. We've travelled extensively around the world staying in an assortment of hotels over the years and have never been stolen from, so our luxury trip to Mauritius was totally spoilt by this event and we won't be going back to this hotel and would warn all others to select their hotel with care.
5 star hotel 3 star food
We stayed at the maritim in may. the hotel is beautifully laid out with its gardens, pool and bar / restuaurant areas. The bedrooms are large and well appointed (we had a de luxe) but the bathrooms are a little tired looking and in need of a makeover. The staff however are five star and wonderful, they change the towels twice a day for you if you wish. The food is not 5 star however. it is adequate but we have been to mauritius before and the food at our previous hotel was absolutely wonderful. We were all inclusive and the Ai's only get to use one of the 3 restaurants. The AI restaurant provides a decent breakfast, we are not big lunchers but the lunch menu was fine, but the dinners lacked variety and there was little or no seafood of any note. (no prawns at all for the fortnight), Mauritian food is noted for being exoticand from different cultures, they have an Indian culture yet the Maritim chefs cannot cook a decent curry! Similarly on their 'Spanish' theme night they failed to deliver a decent paella. The starters are Ok but nothing special and the sweets are poor. Its not as if the food is bad, its just nothing to write home about - and this is not a cheap hotel! The other 2 a la carte restaurants are very pricey and the drinks, ruinously priced. You are given a credit to set against the price of your meal if you are AI but the credit would hardly buy you your starter! The newpaper service is poor (3 days late) with no online newpapers at all. The internet rates in the business centre are 10 times the price of the internet cafes at Grande Baye, and worst of all - bottled water is not provided in your room, you have to buy it from the mini bar - and you are not allowed to take it up from the bar! These are not holiday destroying problems, they are mostly irritating. Our stay at the the Maritim was a good one, the staff are great, the service is 1st class and we met good company but its the layout of the hotel which makes it, its one of the prettiest we have ever stayed in. If the management get their act together and improve the food and cut out the irritating bits this could be a real 5 star hotel- it isn't right now.
Excellent hotel - thoroughly recommended
We have just reteurned from a week at the Maratim (20th - 28th April). I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting to visit Mauritius - we found it an excellent hotel in every way. Perhaps the most memorable part of our stay was the staff - who were all remarkably (and genuinely) friendly. The room was really good (we booked a Prestige Room) which was very spacious and had a huge bathroom. The other advantage of the Prestige Room was that we got a pass to eat breakfast in the Maree beach restuarant. Breakfast by the Indian Ocean takes some beating ! People in previous posts havent mentioned the snorkelling - but it was world class. There is a big expanse of coral in front of the beach restaurant which was easy to swim out to and explore - the coral itself was spectacular, let alone all the tropical fish. The boat house runs free twice daily trips to another reef further out. When we stayed the hotel was empty barely half full - possibly the mosquito scare (but I dont think that people need to be unduly worried about this in the hotels - its more an issue in the towns and villages). On the other hand, its getting near the end of their season. Our experience was that this was a definite advantage - super service everywhere ! People have mentioned that the food had got worse recently. We didn't find that, so maybe they've got past their wobble ! We would especially recommend the Indian and Italian evenings. We ate our lunch in the Maree (the a la carte restuarant on the beach) - again we'd recommend this, as you got their A la Carte cooking standard for your All inclusive lunch. Our one challenge was to find a drinkable wine for dinner on AI. The red was close to undrinkable; the white not much better; the rose was OK if you'd had a couple of cocktails beforehand. We moved on to Sparkling wine, end ended up asking for Kir Royales (and then we could pretend it was pink Champagne). Failing that, buy a bottle - but these were expensive (£20+) Finally, the rep and the hotel warn you not to buy anything from the traders on the beach (cloths, shells, necklaces etc) - but if you ran a hotel shop, I guess thats what you'd say too ! Dont let it put you off, we ended up buying quite a few things from them. The intial " price " was usually about 2 or 3 times what we ended up payiing, but haggling was was always good natured - and thats part of the fun, isnt it ! All in all, very happy to recommend the Maritim very highly
Not A Hotel For Celebrations Or Anniversaries !
The reason this review is overdue is because I was awaiting a reply to an official complaint I made to the hotel management. I have now received a reply which is basically very dismissive of my complaint. Save yourself the disappointment if you are thinking of splashing out for some 5* luxury to celebrate a personal milestone in your life at this hotel. My wife and I spent our hard earned money to come here to celebrate my birthday and our wedding anniversary but we were very badly let down in an appalling manner by the management and ill trained staff at this hotel. A 5* Hotel with Appalling 3* Service by Poorly Trained Staff. We came here on a All inclusive package to celebrate my 60th birthday and our 35th wedding anniversary. Upon arrival the check in was quick and efficient and the staff already knew of my birthday and our wedding anniversary which impressed us straight away. However the good impression soon ended as even though we were extremely tired from a long flight the communications staff made us book reservations at 4 restaurants of the hotel instead of asking us to do that the next day when we were more rested. It seems they try and catch you out when you have just arrived tired and you are unaware in order to try and get you to buy food and services not included in the AI package. The staff member gave us the impression that otherwise the restaurants would get fully booked. We soon realised this was not true as the hotel only had 55% occupancy. We felt that although we were All inclusive the staff are very eager to get you to book meals and other facilities that are not included in your AI package which is not only very disappointing and annoying but also unfair. The staff are polite and friendly to your face but their nice words are not put into action. My wife had to almost beg for everyday room toiletries on a daily basis. The hotel itself is set on a great location however the rating might be 5 star but we felt the staff training is more like 3 star hotel. The Prestige Room we stayed in did not even have any bed decor nor any fresh flowers not even complimentary biscuits or snacks. We had booked a restaurant meal at the La Maree (they even made us pay for our table decor) to celebrate my 60th birthday and our 35th wedding anniversary however on arrival at the restaurant they had nothing set up in fact they weren't even expecting us ! There was no table booked nor any decor and the restaurant manager wasn't even expecting us. My wife and I were all dressed up for our special day hoping to celebrate our memorable occasion in style however we left without food and my wife was in tears and cried all night. We did not even get a little cake or some flowers in the room not even a simple bed decor. We were so angry, annoyed and disappointed that we felt like going back home again. The staff are so uncaring, false and insincere at the hotel. I am hoping that members of the family that own the Maritim brand will get in touch with us so we can give them first hand constructive feedback of the horrendous personal experience we have had during our stay at this hotel. Maybe after that they will take heed and re evaluate their staff training programs. We honestly wish that this horrible experience doesn't happen to any other guests at the Maritim. The hotel is set on 25 hectares of ground however we were not even offered a tour of the hotel grounds so we could find our way around the hotel with ease. We have nothing but pure bad memories of our stay at this hotel. It feels so totally unacceptable and unjust to be treated in such an appalling manner especially when you have spent thousands of pounds of your hard earned money to go half way across the world to enjoy a 5 star luxury in a exotic location. In fact I even hope the Prime Minister of Mauritius reads this review especially as tourism is a major source of national income but such horrible experiences are likely to put tourists off from coming to such a beautiful island ! I certainly would not recommend Mauritius to anyone least of all the Maritim hotel. The staff at this hotel should realise that they have jobs as a result of tourists coming to their island and staying at the hotel where they work and they should be good ambassadors of their country and hotel. There is a total lack of consistency in the staffing level of service offered on a daily basis. Either the staff are ill trained and lacking strong leadership or they simply do not possess the academic personal qualities to work in the hospitality industry. The All inclusive package is very confusing and will incur hefty charges if one is not vigilant. Naturally one expects a higher standard of service and room facilities in a 5 star hotel however my expectations were not met at this hotel. The day after our ruined celebration evening I was strolling along the beach where a hotel security staff started talking to me and asked me why I was looking unhappy so I explained how the incompetent staff had ruined our celebrations upon which he politely said to me " that's because you are Indian ". I was shocked because I live in a country that is multi cultural where discrimination of any nature is against the Laws of my beautiful country. He then requested that I write a review on TripAdvisor and praise him by naming him so that his employers will give him a bonus of 2000 rupees ! This sums up the low level of morale amongst the hotel staff. If you are staying here with children please be careful on the beach as they horse ride on the beach and the horses dung is covered up with beach sand by the horse guides. How dangerously unhygienic is that ! The food is extremely boring and more or less the same everyday so much so that I could recite the whole menu at the Belle Vue buffet restaurant. I feel we have wasted our money at this hotel where our stay was totally miserable and have nothing but bad memories at this hotel. We came here to celebrate important and memorable milestones our lives instead we became stressed, disappointed and unhappy. The management and the staff members responsible for ruining our stay at this hotel should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves and should not be employed within the hospitality sector.
Fantastic Honeymoon
We went on honeymoon to the Maritim in July 2005. We read reviews but none of them can truly describe how great this hotel is. The staff are fantastic, great service all the time. The food is excellent and lots of choice. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel - we are very particular about where we stay and this place had it all....
Total relaxation
This holiday was a special holiday celabrating a special Birthday, from the minute you go into the Maritim you are made to feel special, the staff make this place, everyone speaks to you with a smile, service is outstanding, we were all inclusive and there was some thing there for everyone. Guys must wear trousers in the evening. The place was imaculate. Fridge in the room filled every night, towels supplied for the beach and pool, shampoo, conditioner etc supplied in the room, there is a hairdryer too, but go on the balcony and your hair is dried in minutes. we were concerned the weather wasent going to be good looking at the forcasts before we left, it was fantastic, very very hot. It was a dream holiday and hope to go back. We did hire a car for 2 days but wouldnt reccomend it, just get a taxi from the hotel wherever you want to go. There is lots going on if you want to or just totally chill out which is what we did. Never had such a great holiday and we are very envious of those who are heading back there. No complaints whatsoever, top marks to the staff.
Important info for wedding planners!!
We have just returned from our wedding / honeymoon at the Maritim, Mauritius. There are no words to describe how fantastic the whole experience was for us. In the weeks running upto the wedding, we scanned the internet trying to find any info we could about how the Maritim dealt with weddings. Although we found fantastic reports about the hotel etc, nowhere answered our questions such as " what are the hairdressers / flowers / cake like? " and " Do they cater for family not staying in the hotel? " (plus many, many others!!). We met another couple getting married there and they felt this too!! I will try my best to put as much info in for people about to get married there, but if you can't be bothered to read it all PLEASE take it from us, it was truely outstanding! (and NOTHING like it was on GMTV). On your arrival you will be informed of your time to meet your rep (we went with Hayes and Jarvis / White Sand Tours). She will tell you when you need to go to Port Louis for all the formalities, which for us was the day before the wedding. All the planning for the wedding is done at the guest counter. You have to book an appointment with them to arrange all the details. We booked the appointment for four days before the wedding was to take place. The planning took about an hour or so. During the meeting you discuss:- Location - they take you to look at the 3 places you can get married. Food - If you are on your own, you can have a romantic meal at the mon desir. If you are with family / friends (which we were) they will organise a beautiful meal. 11 members of our family were staying at different hotels, they did not charge them for entry. They did have to pay for their drinks (which are VERY reasonably priced) and we paid for their meal which we chose to have it at La Maree and was £25 per head for four courses. They were great with the children and made them pizza and spag bol! The food was fantastic and the service was beyond excellence. The decoration of the table and the individual menus for everyone were much more than we ever dreamed. Flowers - the florist is situated in the hotel. She showed us pictures of what she could do and we chose exactly what we wanted. They were beautiful on the day and were delivered to the room 20 mins before getting married. Spa - i wasn't too sure about having my make-up done but went for it in the end and they made it so natural. I was over the moon. I had nail extensions done before going out there, which was a mistake as after one week of snorkling and swimming, they had chipped and looked awful. I was nearly in tears when i went to the spa to see if they could do anything with them. They assured me they could and on the morning of the wedding she worked wonders on them, they looked perfect (even my husband couldn't believe it and he's a bloke who doesnt normally even notice!!). The photographer - he was excellent. He worked SO hard at getting my dress right in every shot and took real pride in the right lighing and setting. The photos were given to us the next day and are breathtaking. The whole experience was fantastic. If i can answer any questions for anyone, please let me know.
Great Honeymoon
We stayed at the Maritim from 7-22 August 2005 for our honeymoon and were not dissapointed. The main problem we encountered was Air Mauritius, on departure from Heathrow we sat on the plane on the terminal for 2 hours, then finally took off, but 15 minutes before landing the captain announced " A few cases had been left in Heathrow! " Turned out it was 200! The airline compensated us £30 each and they turned up the next evening, there was nothing we could do, so didn't get stressed. The staff were great, but the aircraft was slightly worn, they could do with an update. Anyway, the hotel. It's about an hours transfer, you wonder where the hell your going, then it appears out of nowhere, hidden behind guarded gates. It's set in plush gardens and on arrival you get fruit juice cocktails. There's normally welcome drinks in the evening aswell, watch you don't get too drunk, it's very easy. The rooms are adequate, but they are clean and always tidy, they come with satellite TV and a safe which is free. The bathroom is an average size, but clean. We stayed in a comfort suite, it comes with a Queen size bed, which was massive. The views from the balcony are beautiful, they all seems to over look the gardens and the sea. The beach was nice, it wasn't quite what I expected, it was quite corally, but we never once got cut or grazed. The sea is cool at this time of year, but is a relief from the sun, it's so powerful, nothing like the med! The snorkelling is worth doing, there are some beautiful fish, although watch the sea erchins. There is a restaurant on the beach called Belle Vue, which is great for lunch on the beach, you just crawl off your sun bed and into the restaurant / bar. There's also service for drinks to your sunbed. It's also worth paying and having dinner there one night, we sat on the beach and were serenaded by singers, the food is very good. The evening restaurant was very good, usually 5 nights of the week it's a buffet (chinese, indian, italian, spanish, creole, BBQ) then the other two is a set menu, but you get a choice of 2 or three meals. I was never hungry, I usually gorged myself so much I never wanted and cocktails at the bar. You do have to sign for eveything, apart from breakfast, but it was never a problem for us, although from reading other reports about this hotel others have had problems. Aparently August is one of the quietest times for them, we were told it gets busy from around October as that is the start of their Summer, which they say is very hot. The other problems I read were flies! There were a few, but nothing as bad as they've mentioned. I could imagine that as it gets hotter and humid there may be more, plus mosquitos, I got bitten on the last night, which was humid as we had a thunder storm. The service was top class, we have never been on an expensive holiday and we found them fantastic. They will do anything for you, it was a shame when we saw people who were obviously used to expensive holidays ordering around the staff like they were worthless, as they work so hard. We frequently got told off for pouring our own wine and even dragging a sunbed a few feet, they really believe you are there to relax and should do nothing. If you do get a bit bored of the hotel there are a few trips, a sugar factory and botanic gardens about 20 minutes away. Another trip we went on was down in the south of the island for the day. The trips were alright, nothing wonderful to us, but it was good to get out and about and at least go home and say we saw some of the island. There are loads of boat trips and we were told il Aux Cerfs (island on east coast) was a must, but we never made, apparently that really is amazing. The weather in August was pleasant, about 25 most of the time, I got a very good tan. We had a few grey days with some rain and then it seemed to clear up for 3-4days, although it was never clear like the weather in the med. The clouds were a releif from the sun though! Don't take beach towel, they are provided everyday for you. If you have any questions send me an email.
From great to chaotic and back again..
The many reviews here capture a lot of what is great about the Maritim - the location, the island itself and many elements of the facilities, the AI, watersports and service. We traveled here for 10 days of fly and flop and left with mixed feelings about the hotel. We arrived on an early morning flight from London knowing that our room probably wouldn't be ready - however we were told repeatedly that it would be 20 minutes, 20 minutes, 20 minutes...2 hours later we were falling asleep in the lobby in our crumpled clothes as the day got hotter and hotter. The staff were very friendly but seemingly clueless about what was going on. Not the best start. We had several issues around the booking of the beach restaurant (which the hotel insists on) - lost bookings, chaotic service, being told there were no tables free for AI guests but we could pay and go a la carte and get a table, waiting 15 minutes for a menu, drink etc. We spoke to the management about these problems and they were sorted out with good grace but together they added up to hassle we just didn't need. It's a shame because the beach restaurant La Maree is in a lovely setting and the food is good. We ate 3 times in the Chateau the fine dining restaurant which is excellent. The chefs are producing high quality food - but the prices are high end London restaurant. Your 1, 000 rupee credit from the AI will buy you one glass of champagne so be prepared! We had dinner there on the last night and it was about £100. The Maitre D is charming and bent over backwards to make it a lovely experience each time. The hotel sells day passes to tourists and locals and on one day we were there the hotel was totally over-run with non-residents. This meant the serene atmosphere by the pool was ruined, the resort rammed and sunbeds heaving. I can understand why they do this for additional revenue but I do think it's a bit cheap for a 5 star resort. There is no lifeguard on duty at the pool and I think this should be reviewed. Every day there were unsupervised kids jumping and diving into shallow water and whilst it's up to parents to manage their kids it's not too relaxing seeing this going on and wondering how long it will be before someone hurts themselves. The spa is lovely - beautifully designed with great facilities - sauna, plunge pool, relaxation area. I had 2 treatments - a 30 minute massage that was free for Virgin customers and it was good, and a further massage during which the therapist left her mobile on and resting on the bed next to me which started ringing and vibrating half way through the massage. I asked her to switch it off and she just sort of shrugged and moved it. Not the most relaxing of experiences! Again these are London prices - a full body massage treatment for an hour is about £65. So my review of this hotel is a bit like the girl with the curl - when it was good it was very good and when it was bad it was horrid. I think I would pay a bit more next time and try another Mauritian hotel. If there was a half star I would give it 3.5, it would be a 5 if these management issues were ironed out.
Wonderful stay at Maritim Hotel!
My boyfriend and I travelled to Mauritius for the first time in October 2010 along with his parents. We were advised by our travel agent to book all inclusive as the drinks are very expensive. I am so glad we did because there is nothing better than ordering drinks without having to worry about the cost of them. You do however have to pay for apple / grapetizers and South African wines. We landed late and got to the hotel at 9pm and the staff were very kind to usher us off to dinner - my boyfriend had to change into long pants though as no shorts are allowed at dinner. This is totally fine but just make sure you pack in a pair of jeans - as we had mostly packed in shorts, tshirts, costumes and dresses. The food at the hotel was great - yes there are some repetitions but there was always a great variety and something for everyone. The hotel itself was stunning - the rooms were large and well maintained. I couldn't have asked for a better view to wake up to in the morning - Turtle Bay is just exquisite! There is a large strip of beach and if you position yourself on the strip in front of the cocktail bar, you simply put up a flag for service and your choice of beverage is brought to you. The water sport variety is one of the best I have seen - you can water ski, canoe, paddle and learn how to sail! Truly great! There are beach hawkers but they are very friendly and if you don't want to purchase something - they don't bother you. On the last day of our stay, the hotel next to ours burnt down (The Grand Mauritian) which was quite a traumatic experience. Many of the guests from that hotel were accommodated at ours for the rest of their stay and the staff at Maritim rushed over to that hotel to offer assistance. I will definitely be back - the holiday was unforgettable! TIP - make sure you visit Grand Baie and go snorkeling to one of the island trips - you have to see the water to believe it! The market place at Port Louis is a must too!
Excellent
I have travelled the world & stayed in many hotels (5* & 1*), B & B's, youth hostels & camp grounds. Here are my views on the Maritim. My husband & I got married here August 2003. The wedding was wonderful, a truly memorable day. The wedding co-ordinators were so very helpful. The normal place to have the wedding ceremony was on the beach or in the gardens, but I asked if it would be possible to get married on the golf course (there is a small stream with a bridge & some lovely gardens & it is also very, very quiet). This was no problem at all (in fact the golf course manager was one of our witnesses). The food was fabulous in ALL three restaurants. Some comments about the buffet I think are unfair in my opinion. You don't have to eat all courses - I seldom did & I think the quality of the food is of a high standard & authentic. The spa area was great, I went nearly every day of our two week stay & on only one occasion, had to share the sauna & steam room with others. Comments about the sharp areas of sand somewhat bemuse me, as beaches are natural, sand being formed of coral etc. Do people expect the beaches to be combed for sharp bits? Wear reef shoes, as advised at the hotel - it's not a problem. Room service was 2nd to none & all staff were friendly, discreet & courteous, just what one would expect in such a hotel. The comfort rooms are more than adequate with a beautifully large bed. My room was spotless & cleaned everyday (most times to suit my convenience). Day trips are so very cheap by taxi - go to the other side of the island & look around. Take a trip to Port Louis market. Go to the sacred water. Don't just sit on a sunbed for your whole holiday - you'll be missing out. Phoenix beer - haven't found another beer that comes close.
A first class holiday from beginning to end
We have just returned from a 12 night trip staying at the Maritim Hotel in Mauritius. We have stayed at many hotels all over the world and the Maritim rates as one of the best. From our arrival to our departure we received a first class service from all of the Maritim staff. The staff are not only curtious but go out of their way to be helpful, We have never been so well looked after. We stayed in a Prestige room which was excellent. The variety of food was very good and cooked to a high standard. Whilst we were there we were also invited by guests to two weddings. A family member had also told us about their wedding at the Maritim but there's nothing like experiencing something first hand. Both of the couples received a very special wedding which was unique to them. Again the hotel handled the occasions with great care and consideration. If anybody is looking for a first class hotel I cannot recommend the Maritim highly enough.
Avoid
I'm unfortunately writing this review on our last day willing the hours away until I can actually leave this badly run disgustingly behaved he'll hole. Apart from less than average grounds, a fake beach that the beach boys joke to be the worst in Mauritius (and yes beach boys are allowed on the apparent private beach) the sea is murky and the rocks very painful to walk on. The pool is nice but if like me your a morning swimmer expect to be told not to swim until after the pool boys finish cleaning the pool as late as 10 some days. The rooms are average, we had to report the phone as not working the one night we actually wanted to stay in and get room service. The food is good, but quite repetitive and you are constantly aware that although all inclusive you have 1 buffet restaurant to eat at unless you pay even more to eat at the other numerous restaurants in the hotel which start at approx 50 euro extra per person and that is for the basic menu. The evening entertainment is a joke although I do feel sorry for the entertainers to force a smile while performing extremely cheesy poor shows. However to my huge disappointment the worse thing about this hotel is the alarmingly serious lack of customer care. I had a massage and during the treatment my chain was removed and not handed back to me, upon realising the day after I immediately went back to the spa and was told nothing has been handed in, the police were called and it is currently under investigation but what is the most upsetting thing is to be told by the senior manager that it's the weekend, she hasn't had time to read the report yet, this was nearly 12 hours after it was reported with the police and she can help and will send the security manager so I can have a copy and this will be good because I can then claim on my insurance at which I absolutely disagreed with, why should I have to claim on my insurance an expensive tiffanies chain that was taken from her employee during a massage at her hotel? At which point she held up her hands and said the police are dealing with it she can not get involved. This same lax attitude from a hotel that leaves your luggage hanging around in hallways, which happened both when we arrived at 8 in the morning until 3 pm when we were allowed in to the room and after checking out I had to specifically insist that our luggage be stored in the luggage room after seeing it in the hallway 2 hours after we had checked out given their is a police investigation being carried out into the loss of my property already. It is a very negative review to an extremely negative experience and o sincerely hope the hotels head office reads this and actually takes responsibility and action to better this hotel and its staff. I am used to travelling extensively with work and personal and have never received such bad customer care, I do hope for future visitors this is looked into and improved, in the meantime I have been told that I ca always mail them to find out what is happening with the police investigation...
Wow!
My new husband and i went to the maritim to get married (30 / 04 / 06 -15 / 05 / 06). The weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky. The hotel was luxurious, the staff were very beautiful people, helpful and kind, nothing was too much trouble. Our wedding was perfect. We were the only couple to get wed on that day, it started at 4pm and they finished with us at 6pm and that made us feel very special the fact that they didn't rush the service. The food was spectacular as was the service. Please go, i totally recommend going here, it's an amazing place, so much so that we have booked to go again next year!
Amazing holidays thanks to an amazing place
We had the most amazing holidays in this beautiful resort! I wonder if we have been in the same one as mentioned by the below reviewers?? Honestly, from the moment we arrived, we have been bluffed. We were taken to our room shortly after we arrived at the hotel, and then straight to the beach. A lovely one! White and fine sandy beach with comfortable sunbeds available for everyone. For a family, this place is perfect with countless activities, watersports, landsports and one place our daughter spent a lot of time in: the animal farm and giant turtles park! She even took horse riding lessons from the on-site equestrian centre (apparently the only hotel in Mauritius to have one), and is still showing the pictures to her friends! We took most of our meals in the main restaurant which is quite nice, especially the sushi corner where I was nearly everyday... Though, the food variety offered was remarkable! The beach restaurant really gives you the feeling of being like Robinson Crusoe with your feet in the sand. Our tip: during the stay, treat yourself to a romantic dinner in the " ancient-style " fine dining restaurant. Simply unbelievable!
You could not fault it
We have just returned from our stay at this excellent hotel. The staff are the friendliest we have ever come across and the most polite and helpful. We met a couple who have visited the hotel for the last 8yrs and say it feels like home as the staff never change which can only be a good thing. The choice of food and activities was very good. The weather is a bit unpredictable in June but it is their winter. We were informed by our tour operator that there was two new hotels being built either side of the Maritim but this did not seem to worry us.
Wow
Fantastic in every way. Fab service, accommodation, food, facilities, beaches etc. what more do you want. We went with our daughter and husband and 6 year old Grandaughter. We were all-inclusive and we wanted for nothing. Great
Enjoyable stay at the Maritim
We stayed here for 10 days as the last section of our 3 centre holiday with Virgin as we upgraded from the one suggested by them in the brochure. After a hair raising drive from the airport with a bit of a mad taxi driver, the sight of the Maritim's reception area was very welcome, although we arrived when it was dark and couldn't see the fabulous view until the following day. Our comfort room was fine if a little in need of some refurbishment and the bathroom was a bit small compared with the size of the bedroom. But it was clean and comfortable (the bed was enormous) and had everything you needed. We were on all the All Inclusive package which I would definitely recommend even if you don't think you would get the benefit from all the free drinks as the prices for food and drink on the non-all inclusive menu seemed very expensive. You are restricted on the all inclusive menus but there is still enough choice. You hand over your guest card each time you order something and then sign a slip when you have finished. We have been to other all inclusive hotels and the Maritim had some good points and some not so good. As has previously been mentioned, the minibar was not included, however at the Maritim you could have wine by the bottle and also bottles of water which you could take back to your room. We have stayed at hotels where you had to buy bottled water and you were only served wine by the glass so didn't know what you were drinking! The main restaurant is buffet service on 6 out of 7 evenings and the night when it was waiter service was the only time we had problems. Because it was taking longer for everyone to finish their meals, we had to wait for a table and then had to wait ages between courses as the staff were so busy. Having said that, the meal was excellent when we did get it. There are themed nights as well and there was always plenty of choice for the most fussy of eaters. Also, if you have a special diet the chefs will prepare something especially for you. For lunch, we would definitely recommend La Maree which you can use for lunch if you are on all inclusive. The setting is beautiful and the food very good. We also had dinner there a couple of evenings which we thought was worth the extra cost. We didn't use the other restaurant but a couple of people we spoke to said they didn't think it was worth the money. There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool and beach area whichever you prefer and you receive a towel card for your stay which you exchange each day for a beach towel from the desk on the beach. A nice touch is when cold towels are brought to you to cool you down while lying on your sunbed. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, however we did notice that towards the end of our stay a couple became extra friendly and stopped for a chat where they hadn't before. Call me cynical if you like but were they hoping for a tip as they had seen we were soon to be leaving? We left specific tips for those staff who we thought had looked after us well throughout our stay and also left some money in the general tip box at reception when we left. The hotel runs a taxi service into both Port Louis and Grand Baie on certain days of the week - the details are published in the weekly entertainments leaflet in the room. The taxi takes 4 people so you may share with others, you have about 2 hours when you get there and the taxi waits for you and brings you back. The driver charges a set amount so it's a good way of getting out and about for a short while rather than staying in the hotel all the time. However, we felt a little intimidated when we went into some of the local shops in Grand Baie (we have been to Turkey three times and some people find the shopkeepers there too over the top but we felt extremely uncomfortable in the market and shops in Mauritius). We were actually followed around the supermarket. On talking to others, we were not the only ones who felt this and unfortunately for the shopkeepers, they lost sales as we along with others simply left without buying anything. To finish off the trip, we would recommend upgrading to the new Premium Economy on Air Mauritius. Although called Premium Economy, it is business class by another name. You can go in the lounge at Mauritius Airport, you get a much larger seat on the plane with lots of legroom, an amenity kit and more attentive service and better food. For a 12 hour flight, it was excellent. We definitely enjoyed our stay at the Maritim but it is a very long way to go if you are planning to visit just the one place. As an add on to a trip to for example South Africa though, it was ideal.
Relaxing holiday
We returned from the Maritim on 23rd April 2006 having spent 12 nights there. The hotel was acceptable, but was in need of upgrading in certain areas especially around the pool area. However sunbeds really comfy and you did not have to fight for them. They also included a parasol per pair. We booked all inclusive and found the food really good with themed nights in the Belle Vue most nights. However the drinks service was a little slow. We ate in the Mon Desire one night for our anniversary. The food was nice, but very rich. It cost us around £75 including wine as this was not included. This included the discount from the hotel for being all inclusive. Most lunches were spent in the La Maree on the beach as the lunch menu in the quarterdeck was for smaller appetites. We enjoyed our holiday and found it very relaxing, however I would warn you that the evening entertainment is very repetative and we found ourselves dreading it by the end of the holiday. Unfortunately there is only one bar and no where else to go. We found the bar service a little slow, however after a 50p tip each evening it greatly improved! A few of the bar staff were excellent with great personalities, especially Muddoo!! The weather was hot, but it did rain every day. Apparently we hit the end of the Cyclone season. Although this did not ruin our holiday it is worth considering if you are a sun worshipper. We booked a trip with Summertimes, but subsequently found out that it was cheaper if you booked with the hotel. Great water sports at the hotel (which are included) and you must not miss the giant tortoises. Overall we would recommend this hotel, but not the entertainment!
wonderful, faultless!
we arrived to a welcome cocktail and this set the scene for the excellent way we were looked after for our entire stay. it is well worth paying the extra for the prestige room as not only do you get a beautiful room but you have breakfast each morning on the beach in La Maree restaurant, cooked to order and the level of service was first class. this has to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in, and there have been many. All inclusive really meant all inclusive, with lovely cocktails, yummy coffees and wonderful food. We decided to pay the little extra to eat most nights in La maree, where one night we had a wonderful table next to the sea surrounded by candles in the sand and flower petals on the table. Mon Desur restaurant had the edge with excellent food and is well worth the visit, however La Maree was so welcoming and the food was great. i couldn't fault this hotel, we had a fantastic holiday and WHEN we return to mauritius it will be to this hotel. the photos in the brochure dont do it justice.
Brilliant!!!
We have just returned from our third visit to this hotel, and once again it was a holiday to remember! The service, the food and the atmosphere are awesome and the hotel itself is impeccable. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, the rooms are immaculate and the grounds are kept very well. All staff work very hard to make your stay enjoyable. I would especially like to commend Jay (pool service) and Dave (beach service) as they go above and beyond! If I were to have one criticism it is that the bar area is a little small for all the guests when the hotel is full, often we struggled to find a seat after nine. My advice would be to eat earlier and then you may stand a chance. Service for drinks can be a little slow when the bar is full - although the staff work hard. Our son (aged 8) had a fabulous time as did we. There is a wide range of activities including water sports all included in the all inclusive package. I would recommend a trip to the Mon Desir restaurant as the food was stupendous. We visited three times, you have to pay a small amount extra (less than a meal at home) but it is well worth it. I absolutely love this hotel and can honestly say I have had the best holidays of my life here. Throroughly recommended.
Fabulous Wedding
8 of us stayed at the Maritim for 2 weeks on an all inclusive basis. The food was so good we have all put weight on. The purpose of our holiday was for my wedding. It couldnt have been any more perfect. The weather was fabulous, this was a relief as there had been quite a lot of rain during our stay. There is a florist at the hotel and they did my bridal bouquet & bridesmaid they were perfect. The photographer was brilliant and he basically guides you through all of the wedding process. The photos we had were once again perfect. Infact to sum up everything that the hotel did for us on the day PERFECT says it all. The hotels facilities were excellent, all of the water sports, golf course, spa etc were of a high standard. The scuba diving although it was extra was very reasonable. There was building on both sides of the hotel, but this didnt really ruin our holiday as the noise wasnt constant. It would have been nice to know about this before hand, but Thompson decided not to tell us! Not the hotels fault of course. We had a meal on our wedding night at Mon Desir courtesy of the management. This was fantastic, we had to pay for our drinks but that was ok. If anyone has any questions regarding the wedding or holiday please feel free to contact me. I love talking about the Maritim. We shall most probably go back in a few years time, on a special anniversary!
Wedding Paradise
Wow, what a place. The hotel itself is fantastic but the staff make it an experience you will never forget. We actually got married at the Maritim and from the moment we checked in, everything went to plan. We had booked 'all inclusive' and had read a number of negative reviews about the food before leaving. However, I can honestly say that there was nothing to fault. They catered for every taste. The staff were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. The Guest Service Team did a wonderful job of arranging the wedding for us. We had a fantastic day. The photographer was fantastic - far better than we could ever have imagined! So, if you are thinking of getting married there but are a bit apprehensive - don't be. We couldn't fault anything about the day. 1. The flowers were superb. 2. The service on the beach was lovely. 3. Photographs out of this world. 4. Video to capture the whole experience. 5. Fantastic meal following the ceremony. 6. Lovely decorated room. A very special thank you to the staff in the Quarter Deck - especially Deena and Quedo. They really made our holiday! The hotel itself was superb. We had booked a standard double room for the first week. The rooms are great. However, for the second we, we had upgraded to a Prestige Room and it was well worth the extra money!!! We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone!
Fantastic Honeymoon
We have jsut recently returned from staying at the Maritim for 2 weeks for our Honeymoon. Service in the hotel was fantastic and the food was excellent. The staff could not do enough for us. Although the hotel was fully booked on our second week, we did not notice. The hotel still felt nice and quiet. Its the perfect place for relaxing and chilling out for 2 weeks. Lots of sports activities which pleased my Husband, and there was a band on most nights and sometimes a show, which were nice as you could still sit and chat and relax. I would go back and would recommend it to anyone who wants to go somewhere that you dont have to lift a finger, everything is done for you.
Excellent Hotel with Excellent Service
We spent 12 days at the Maritim for an all inclusive holiday. We are in our sixties and were looking for a relaxing quality hotel with good facilities and service and we certainly found that. On arrival in the early morning we were greeted warmly and given a dring and a cold towel. We were shown the transit lounge facilties to use until our room was ready which were excellent. We then found we had been upgrded to a prestige room which was massive and superbly fitted out. The pool was spacious although not heated and the poolside service was excellent. There were plenty of sunbeds round the pool and on the beach and lots of activities, many of which were free unlike other places such as water skiing. There were three restaurants the main buffet area, the popular beach restaurant (book early it is popular) and the gourmet restaurant which we used once. All were very good with a wide choice. The range of drinks was extensive and we tried most of them. To us the main selling point is the service. All the staff are charming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. For example we had to move rooms because of a problem with the door lock. The issue was resolved promptly with a team of staff summoned to move our stuff. When I went to tell reception we only had one bathrobe in the new room they made a phone call and another one was there when I got back. Overall we would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Gets a lot of the basics wrong
You can forgive hotels a lot when you have the wonderful sun, sea and sand of Mauritius but a high end hotel needs to set itself some higher standards than this. It certainly isn't all bad, Jay at the pool is a top guy, attentive, funny and professional. Water skiing is free. The spa is good. Evening entertainment on the whole was ok. The sun beds are pretty plentiful, and it could not be any closer to the beach. However..... The main gripe is probably the food. 6 or 7 restaurants from the main buffet style place through a range of eateries dotted around the resort. We tried all of them bar one which we couldn't book as we had a baby. Get your bookings in early as the restaurants get booked up pretty quickly. And some have a (loose) dress code. But you'll be disappointed with the food. At best average, and often bland. Not one meal had us wowed. Really is a shame. Even if they get something right one day (a fish sandwich at lunch) the next day the same dish was inedible. One tip here. Make friends with the pool staff and ask them what food is good that day for lunch, then order that. It will be a pretty short list. Be really careful about the half board / all inclusive packages. They only entitle you to a 'credit' at a number of the restaurants of 750 Rps which gets you about half a main. Quite a con really. In some restaurants you are heavily restricted on the food which is included in the package. All inclusive is really only worth the extra money if you intend to hammer the bar. Otherwise you're better off keeping your cash. Some of the other 'benefits' of the all inclusive were not available to us that week. Finally, we had something stolen from our room and they really did nothing about it apart from tell us they would look into it. It's a high end resort. Looks the part. Needs to sharpen up its staff, stop charging for meals you think you've paid for in your package and please do something about the food. You'd then have a great hotel. As it is, great holiday because we don't let these things get to us, but so many black marks that you need to know about when making your choice.
Watch out for the flies!!!
We went to the Maritim for a family wedding at the end of August 04 on an All-Inclusive package. We have a one year old, who is regularly in his stroller - yet they put us on the top (3rd) floor of the hotel and it does not have a lift - not easy going down a number of flights of stairs carrying the little one, stroller and everything you need for the beach. The room was a lot smaller than we expected and on arrival the mini bar had leaked all over the floor. The crib they gave to us for our baby flaked paint & we had to constantly be careful he did not eat it. The restaurant is a further floor below reception and the food and service were excellent on some days but for the most part mediocre. For a number of evenings the choice in the main restaurant was somewhat limited and to eat in the alternative a la carte restaurants, whilst good, was rather costly on the occassions we tried it. Lunch, again whilst good, was limited to only one course, if you wanted more it was an additional cost. It was an annoyance having to wait & sign for everything you had, at busy times in the restaurant you could wait for up to 20 mins to sign for your food & drinks - you could not just up and go as they hold your card and you need this everytime you order food or drinks. The pool, which was yet another floor below, was so cold that there was hardly ever anyone in it. You expect the beach to be idyllic, like the Carribean, but the sand on the beach was extremely coarse - basically being crushed shells and there were often a number of cigarette ends around the sunbeds. And worst of all were the amount of flies, you laid on the beach and they constantly landed on you, the same by the pool and the same in the main restaurant, but obviously here they were more interested in your food. Forget eating in the beach restaurant at lunchtimes you were over-ran by flies! This hotel was supposed to be four and a half stars, but we have stayed in better three star hotels in the U. S. Overall for a cost of USD 8, 000 for two adults and an infant (and price excludes the cost of flying from the US to the UK) this hotel offers poor value for money and was not of a particularly high standard.
