Fantastic service and amazing food
Amazing service from Tsepo, he was knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Food was amazing. We ordered the trout and fillet, along the chocolate fondue to share. 10 / 10 would recommend
Amazing dinner
Tsepo was a very attentive host & the food was excellent. The ambiance is great & the little touch of the home baked little loaf of bread with a trout and butter is wonderful. Oysters were exceptional!

4 Family dinner for in laws 50th anniversary Staff was very friendly Starters was amazing and the staff was spot on with who ate what Mains was amazing and it came on time and warm The staff knew who was eating what Thank you very much The only thing that I would say is just maybe better the cheesecake recipe and actually all the dessert in general could be better But thank you very much
Intimate meal for 2
We were greeted by a cozy and intimate setting. Since we were in Dullstroom we tried the trout, it was great. Our waiter Tshepo was excellent. I would try it again

Truly wonderful
Booked a birthday dinner and we were not disappointed! The ambience was wonderful, the food was fantastic and the service was amazing. Thank you to Lucas and Sipho for being attentive. They even surprised the birthday girl with a gift which was completely unexpected. A wonderful evening all round👌🏼

Oustanding atmosphere, service and food!
This is the second time at this hotel and we remain impressed by the excellent standards and service. Our waiter Tsepo, as well as all the staff, was most attentive. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. Kudos to all who made our stay so special.

Probably our worst restaurant experience ever
The Chapter 1 was recommended to us as the best place to eat in Dullstroom so we decide to book dinner. What a great disappointment. Firstly we could not park in the carpark and had to park on the street outside, which tends to be the norm in Dullstroom. Secondly at reception there was nobody the help us, but we eventually found our way to the restaurant. The restaurant as you would expect has a scottish decor to it which does add to the atmosphere. Having been shown our table the waiter wandered off to chat to his mate and we had to call him to take our drinks order. Their menu was quite extensive and looked very good. It was complimented by a reasonable wine list. We ordered our wine and food and sat back to enjoy the evening. The starters was good and we looked forward to the our main meal. It was then that things began to go wrong. Having finished my first glass of wine, which normally the wiater refills after some time I decided to pour my own. The waiter then rushed over and in no uncertain terms told me I was not to do this and it was his job. If he had been doing his job I would not have had too. This was then followed by two steaks not cooked to order. The medium rare was almost well done and as tough as old boots. Having cooked many a fillet myself I could not believe a qualified chef could do this. After raising our concerns with the waiter he just left and we had to call the restaurant Manager needless to say there were apologies and offers that we need not pay. An absolute insult that we were now trying to avoid the bill. That was more than enough I paid the bill and will not be returning. If you are in Dullstroom there are far better places to spend your evening, with great food and friendly efficient service.

Tutto buonissimo! Personale bravissimo e il cameriere e somelier Tsepo molto competente e cordiale. Se andate a Dullstroom vale, non solo il soggiorno in una delle bellissime camere, ma anche il cibo. Super approvato!
Consigliatissimo!
Siamo stati qui con mio marito in luna di miele: cibo veramente ottimo e personale fantastico! Tsepo ci ha seguiti durante tutta la cena e ci ha consigliato in maniera garbata e mai invadente. Vengono usati ingredienti locali e la differenza si sente. Anche il vino della zona davvero buonissimo, consigliamo a chiunque voglia una cena tranquilla e di classe di cenare qui, non se ne pentirà!

Home away from Home
The service in this place is incredible! We were served very quickly and very friendly by every single member of staff; even down to the chef personally coming out and talking to us about the local food and drinks. I was recommended a white wine which paired amazing with my lamb which was so tender! And the most amazing garlic potatoes and a delicious tiramisu to finish. (Not forgetting the courtesy Sheri from the waiters! We were a group of 9!) Couldn't recommend it enough! The staff really make it feel like a home away from home 🫶
Work trip
We had an abso amazing stay in the Highlander hotel. The fool was absolutely brilliant and top quality. Thank you to the chef. A very big thank you to David, Simon Sepo and Tsepho for their amazing service.

Amazing food and service as this gem of a hotel
The most amazing restaurant at this fabulous hotel. The food was delicious and extremely well presented. The chef came out to meet us all at the end. David, Simon, Tshepo and Sipho were super professional and offered fantastic waiter and bar service. Such a fantastic stay and dinner and highly recommended.

A great dinner!
Great dining experience in Dullstroom. A vegan and a vegetarian in our group, which they accommodated with options that weren't on the menu. The chef himself came to discuss options. The oxtail was amazing. Dessert was top shelf. Wait staff were great, attentive, and classy.

Underwhelming at best, but redeemable
We are seasoned travellers to both Dullstroom and The Highlander, and found ourselves to be really disappointed in the level of service, food and overall presentation. However in saying that, David was absolutely amazing and tried his utmost best to compensate for the rest of the teams underwhelming efforts. This is no longer a fine dining experience, and seriously lacks in training of staff and chefs. The food, although for the most part tasty, was lacklustre. The pork belly was so dry you could have confused it with polystyrene, and the crackling which was deep fried, was utterly inedible. The only redeeming factor for the kitchen, were the desserts made by Betty and her team, which were incredible! Through all of this, the evening was redeemed through the tremendous service from David, and the great deserts from Betty. If it were not for them, we would definitely not return.
Chapter One: The Tales of how David made our Day!
David was the most phenomenal waiter we have ever had, from any restaurant. The food was sublime, and the service was incredible. Every time we visit Dullstroom, we come here - and we will continue coming to Chapter One. An absolutely phenomenal place, with the best service and the most incredible food - EVER!! Thank you, all - and thank you, especially, David, you were the most wonderful, friendly, and kind person!

Our must-visit restaurant whenever we are in Dullstroom! Tshepo was our a lovely, friendly waiter. David was very entertaining & knowledgeable about different whiskeys & brandies. David made me a Drambuie Dom Pedro on request. Divine inspiration!! Definitely my future favorite Dom Pedro!

The Highlander
One of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time. We started with aperitivos at the well stocked and beautiful bar, and then proceeded to our table. We had a starter soup which was delicious and then followed by a fillet steak done to perfection and a trout almondine which was delicate and delicious. We then ended the night with a creme brûlée which is one of the best I've had. A big special thank you to David and Sipho who hosted and served us with a friendly and professional manner and made us feel welcome and made our experience that much better. We give it a 10 / 10 from start to finish.
Very cozy, comfortable, and amazing
Amazing. Brought my partner here for her birthday. Had the oysters for starter, and the oxtail for main. Coupled with a 2019 Chardonnay. Was truly amazing. David our waiter was all the way amazing. Highly recommended if you want to take an escape from the city and enjoy a nice passionate meal made with love 👌🏿

5 star experience in a beautiful setting
Wonderful food and ambience. I had a fantastic mussel pot which one of the specials of the day. Good portions so you won't leave hungry! Looking forward to my next visit to see what's new on the menu.
Wow - Oysters in Dullstroom !!!
This restaurant just gets better and better - incredible mussels and oysters and a selection of absolutely outstanding and varied dishes. This really is Art in food and worth every penny - incredibly well priced for the quality of food, service and ambience. Sometimes difficult to get a booking but definitely one of the best meals available - anywhere !!!
Stunning Oysters
Just had the Oysters and wow... The last thing I expected to find in Dullstroom were oysters. I have a great love for all things sea food and when I saw oysters I could not resist. This place just keeps getting better and better.
Delicious Oysters
My Husband and I have a tradition of ordering oysters and a glass of crisp white wine while on holiday at the coast. So it was quite spectacular to have this treat in Dullstroom on our weekend away ! The oysters were fresh and sent from Paternoster. I would highly recommend them!
Incredible, tasty and beautifully presented
Start with dessert - the creme brulee is unusally different. The oxtail seems to be the most popular dish and for good reason - perfectly cooked. The mussels are as fesh as mussels can be and are kept live in the tank - cooked on demand. Didn't have the oysters but they looked outstanding. Will be returning.

Very special experience
We were welcomed by very friendly faces and escorted to our table. When I made the booking I mentioned it was our 10 year anniversary and when we arrived at our table the restaurant had decorated it with petals and roses. The food was delicious. I had the springbok carpaccio (delish!), my husband didn't enjoy his snails as he was expecting them to be cheesy and garlicky but they made up for it with main meals, both were delicious (oxtail and trout linguine). We were thinking that a palette cleanser would be great and the next thing it arrived. Our waiter David was incredible, funny and always on hand. As we asked for our bill we were surprised by a dessert plate with happy anniversary written on it. The ambience is so romantic and the decor absolutely beautiful. Highly recommended.
Chapter 1... Dont Miss Out
We arrived for a Friday dinner, only to be pleasantly surprised with a free whisky tasting... John (The Owner), very knowledgeable distinguished gentleman, gave us great insights into the various whisky regions and taste profiles..... is it whiskey or whisky... you need to go there to find out. The staff were attentive, sent emails to confirm bookings and they meet you at the door.... it felt like a celebration of some sorts. The FOOD!! was the highlight... easy on the eye, flavorful and generous portions. i recommend Chapter 1 to everyone who will be visiting Dullies. Loved it and I will return... SOON!
Fine dining with a warm welcome
We came here for a delayed Christmas family get together after finally making it out to South Africa late January and it absolutely exceeded any expectations. A fantastic menu offering choice but focussing on quality and what they know best. Friendly warm welcome but top tier service and most importantly beautiful food
Wonderful Experience
There were 10 us of in a group, we had booked into the Highlander for two nights. With past experience, when there is a large group in a restaurant the service seems to fail. But with Chapter 1, oh my gosh! the waiters were on top form. The staff were so attentive. On both nights our dinners were elegant and tasty, and just to add the best oysters i have ever had! It was an absolute treat. Thank you!
Fine dining with good sized portions
My lovely wife and I had dinner here on a quiet Thursday evening and chose a seat alongside one of the warm wood fires. We each had the trio of trout starter which was great - I especially loved the smoortrout. For main I had the oxtail which was a sizeable portion and absolutely delicious. My wife had the prawn and chicken curry which was also wonderful. The service was great and we had a wonderful meal. We skipped desert and had a whisky at the onsite Stag and Crown Whisky bar, in itself a very pleasant place to spend some time
A returning guest
The only place to eat in Dullstroom. Whenever we are in Dullstroom we eat here - and for good reason. The oysters and mussels are outstanding - best that we have probably tasted in South Africa! The trio of trout - wonderful as well. Pork belly - perfect !! Outstanding " artmosphere " and Carmen, Simon and Lucas just make everything wonderful !! Thank-you guys !!!
Fine Dining
We had the most amazing food experience. I had the duck on one of the nights of our stay, it was absolutely divine. My husband had the pork belly, he says it was one of the nicest pork belly meals that he has ever had in a restaurant. In fact, all the dinners that we had were outstanding. The presentation of the dinner is very good. The staff are very attentive and look after you at all times in the restaurant. The service and food are fabulous!

Very special evening for a Birthday, WE all had a very awesome meal, David was amazing, Zane ate too much so his suit won't fit, Thorny ate like a girl and left some meat

An experience to remember!
So little time. so many words. But I will start with CHAPTER 1..... We have been returning to the Highlander for a couple of years now. On our last visit at the beginning of October, we experienced the Chapter 1 Restaurant. The food was out of this world! The chef puts the most amazing personal touch into every course that he plates. The food is an absolute culinary experience for anyone who appreciates fine dining. The staff as usual are attentive and make you feel as if you are the only people in the restaurant. The ambience is perfect for a romantic evening. I highly recommend Chapter 1 restaurant to anyone visiting Dullstroom.
Good and bad
If it weren't for the fact the the toilet facility needs better cleaning or regular attention at peak times, I'd give it a higher rating; but I'm afraid that to me, in an establishment where food is being served, hygienic facilities are of the utmost importance. Food was good and staff very attentive. Definitely recommend. Hope they improve.

What a beautiful evening indeed! My wife and I decided to visit the hotel for dinner. Really superb decor / setting. The oxtail was arguably the best that we have ever eaten and fairly priced. The hosts were attentive and staff were excellent. We will definitely be going back soon...
