Bad food
The food was not tasty and extremely disappointing. It is definitely not authentic Mexican. We won't go there ever again. I do not recommend this place.
Overpriced & underwhelming
I've been to a few Mexican Restaurants around South Africa & this one was by far the most disappointing. The menu lacked authenticity with the theme, & the prices were quite high. We ordered a Quesadilla to share, which was thin & not very filling.
Make sure of the bill!!!
All I can say is check your bill! They overcharge and then the waiter chase you and ask if you've paid after talking to the manager / owner!
What could have been.
On one of my first trips to Dullstroom in 2019 I visited wild about whisky and had one of their tequila tastings. It was exceptional. I had a presenter spend an entire hour with me telling me about the history of tequila, how it's made, how to taste and what to taste. On my most recent trip I noticed a Mexican restaurant opened in town and was offering tequila tastings. I thought, they must know that wild about whisky does tastings, therefore if they're willing to advertise tequila tastings it must be beyond exceptional. Boy was I wrong. I was offered *to taste* their own concoctions of fruit and herb stuffed cheap tequila. I asked my very friendly waitress how tequila was made and I got an embarrassed laugh. She couldn't even tell me how *these* fruit salad tequilas were made. Sigh. I then asked for the drinks menu as there is a nice selection of tequila on the shelves - nothing like the aforementioned tasting bar I might add - but wanted to take a look. Perusing that drinks menu while my kid played on the very nice jungle gym, this establishment started to make sense to me. The sheer number of spelling mistakes alone on that menu tells me that very little care or pride in their product exists. It does not take effort to put attention to detail - or spellcheck. Clearly the model is quantity over quality and I find that very sad. In a town that has unique flair, they have decided to try and sell everything. This approach dilutes the core concept. What is the point then of calling yourselves a Mexican Cantina!? And don't tell me that small towns can't sustain one idea or concept. Harrie's pancakes have been here since before I was born. Do your core concept well, better than anyone else could, and you will survive. And for crying out loud please go and learn what it means to serve a tasting, you have one of the best companies in the country for this 50m away from you. I ordered nachos. Lots of food (kudos!), but quite bland. The cheese tasted old, like it had a bit of a mouldy funk to it, which was off-putting. Sadly nothing exceptional. You had the opportunity to be a niche in a town full of niche establishments and you have blown it.
Offensive to Mexicans
I have been coming to Dullstroom for many years and this has to be one of the worst dining experiences I've had in the town. Food was bland, presented badly and the staff were miserable and largely unhelpful. Miserable staff = red flag for me (usually bad ownership). I have been to and enjoyed numerous Mexican restaurants in Gauteng and was excited to see one in Dullstroom. However I get the impression that no homework was done. This is not Mexican food. This is what google would throw out if one was to search for " Mexican Food " recipes. If you are mostly catering for a Gauteng base, perhaps get your establishment up to a standard that will not disappoint. Also, brown guacamole was shamelessly served. Are you kidding me?
Could be amazing if…
Place is really nice, friendly staff and great play area for kids but the food was really bad with all the dishes we had between 7ppl! I've heard a few other people saying the same thing. I personally won't return because of the food. It's disappointing when you get to eat out once in a while and then you pay for food you could've made better at home and I love Mexican food. Just google some good Mexican recipes and flavors and see what an actual burrito looks like, it can't be that hard.
Great atmosphere!
Good atmosphere. Nice music. Can't wait to get back. went there for the music. And had a blast. Will be back for the world cup rugby on the big screen!
Extremley cold
We arrived on the coldest day in a long time on Dullstroom. We still had a good time with the big variety of tequila and the fireplace. I would love to visit again on a better day.
Great food!
The food is amazing and the tequila even better. The staff was super friendly and best of all it's pet friendly. Highly recommend!!
The TOP spot in Dullstroom
A must stop when passing through Dullstroom. The sitting space is brilliantly placed outside for a bit of sun but also has umbrellas for those like myself who enjoy the shade. Lots of space with a perfect view of the kids play area too. The food other than being one of the quickest to arrive at any place I've ever stopped in SA was beyond satisfying in both flavors and portion size. The food came with home made sauces made by the owner and he (Greg) also took the time to fame an check up and have a chat with my wife and I and of course worth mentioning that its dog friendly and they received a lot of love too. Recommended to all who has kids or family with pets or simply a quick snack.
Delicious!
The food and drinks were absolutely delicious and fast! What I like as someone who cannot tolerate heat is that everything comes out non-spicy and then you choose from a range of sauces to accommodate your spice pallet. The frozen margaritas were amazing. I had the orange infused with rosemary and Grapefruit infused with thyme.
