Clean and Quiet
Quiet, peaceful. We had cabins 9 and 10 for our mini family reunion of " seniors ". Fully equipped kitchen made cooking convenient to eat on the deck overlooking the lake. Yes the walk to the parking area would be a bit of a challenge if you had mobility problems but no one in our group did. Good swimming and fun boats.
Second visit- just as great as the first !
Our second time here. Chose a different cabin.. loved it as much as the first trip (in 2018) Resort owner - fabulous- cabins- spotless, resort- peaceful & relaxing. Just what we needed. I cannot say enough great things about this place. Love, love, love it.
Not accommodating
Booked Four of the 10 cabins for a fishing weekend arrived around 1pm and were immediately told check in wasn't till 3:30. The cabins had no floor mats, no complementary coffee, and we had to ask for toilet paper. The beach is 20 feet long at the bottom of a 100 ft hill with 19% grade. We were not allowed to keep our kayaks on the beach; however " The Cedars " next door were very accommodating and for $ 7.00 a day you can launch and leave your yanks on there beach. I will be staying At the Cedars forever more as the management of Saint Marys Lake resort made it very inconvenient for all of us who had our own kayaks to stay there..
Great family vacation!
We read mostly good reviews, and a few mixed ones, before booking. We aren't precious travellers so we weren't too worried, but it turned out we shouldn't have worried at all. This place was great! Spotless, compact modern cabins (we stayed in # 10, which had the BEST view of the lake. It's further from the parking lot but we were allowed to park right next to it to load and unload), lovely swimming lake that we had to ourselves practically every day, rowboats / pedal boats / canoe to use, and just a short trip to restaurants / liquor store / Saturday market and more. The other guests were all very courteous and friendly (many were repeat visitors who knew each other) and the owner was nothing but pleasant and helpful. Cabin was stocked with all of the basics (though I did bring my own salt as I'm a salt-oholic and didn't want to use up the packets provided) and we found the mattresses firm but very comfortable. Propane BBQ on the spacious deck worked great. Efficient garbage / compost / recycling and towel-replenishment system. Such a beautiful and relaxing spot. We will definitely be back!
First time, and hopefully not the last
I recently stayed at St. Mary Lake Resort in cabin # 3. It was very clean, and the accommodation was more than adequate. It was quite private, and the owner respects privacy. My only complaint is the chairs on the deck. Make sure they do not fall between the slats!
Best Mini Vacation
Went for a few days of relaxation, best place ever! Friendly, clean. Quiet and good fishing! We will go back! Good kitchen, bed was a tad bit uncomfortable but didnt matter as we were too tired from fishing. Quick trip into town for groceries!
Hidden Gem
We started coming to this resort some years ago - a beautiful, quiet location. The cabins are always well maintained. Upgrades to the property have been ongoing. Reasonable rates. Suitable for families, couples or singles. Motion activated security lights have been installed from the parking area to the cabins. I have stayed here on my own (single woman) and have always felt safe.
We would book here again !
We spent 3 blissful nights here for spring break. We cannot say enough good things about this lovely little resort... The kids loved the beach & boats, we loved the peace and quiet. The price was great, the owner was laid back, helpful & pleasant, & the cabin was very clean & well stocked (a cheese grater & large serving bowl for salad etc, would have made it 110% perfect, but we managed just fine !). We would recommend it to anyone who wants a peaceful family or couples vacation.
Moms and babies trip!
Extremely impressed with the beautiful views, clean accommodations, privacy, and family friendly environment! Definitely will be returning. Came on a friends and babies trip and we really couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. It was affordable and the owner checked in and helped us whenever we were in need. It is quiet, serene, peaceful and family Friendly! Cabins 3 and 4 are great for young children as it is close to the parking area... not the million dollar views are cabins 9, 10 & 11.
Great place, clean and beautiful
We are here right now.. this place is fantastic.. clean, modern, great views.. really nice owner... great value.. highly recommend.. close to town, quiet, tranquil.. a great place to spend a week or weekend !!!
weekend getaway in spring
We stayed in cottage # 6 from Mar. 25 to Mar. 27. It was clean, warm, and cozy. The lake is beautiful and very accessible. Very convenient for getting to the nearby town. I wish they provided more toiletries, but I should have also been more prepared! :) Kitchen has enough pans, but I'd bring extra condiments like oil and salt+pepper+sugar. Also, tin foil, bring your own. Parking lot is not directly next your own cottage, but another 30 seconds walk from the cottages, right next door.
Clean and beautiful beach area
The cabin was super clean and nicely updated. Personally we thought it was actually not very cozy but rather a little stark. However it suited our needs well and it was very reasonably priced. very economically set up. We did love the patio and beach area with the free use of the boats etc. as well as the beautiful views of the lake. This place is great for those who are looking for peace and quiet. The owner definitly left you alone. I would have to say though that he was not very pleasant and didnt go out of his way to make your stay any better. He did help you with things you asked for and gave us a tourism map of the island which we ended up using a lot! Also, the rooms come with free wifi but it was a very limited amount of data.
Mr
Older and newer small cabins with outdoor cooking under a roof. Furniture not bad but no 4 stars. Mainly for outdoors people who don't want to live in a tent. Reasonably priced and boats for rent for fishing on the lake.
Clean and family oriented
Cabin 11 by the lake is great location. Clean and spacious (although could do with more space for clothes). Basic kitchen facilities (pots, utensils etc). Pity the owner didnt tell us about swimmer's itch in the lake this year (leaned about it through residents at an adjoining resort who were told by that resort's management). If we'd known, kids wouldnt have suffered because they could have showered after each swim in the lake.
Summer cabin bicycling / hiking trip
We stayed in cabin 6 which had a peekaboo view of the lake and was a short, steep walk down to the dock and beach. The one bedroom looked to the lake and the other was at the back. The kitchen was equipped with basics but we had a problem with the stove. It was quickly rectified (fuse), however, burners were either on high or not. The barbecue worked well and sitting on the deck looking at the lake was lovely. Neighbours are well separated so noise is not an issue. The dock and beach are well maintained and there are canoes and paddle boats available (free). I'd say " resort " is a bit of exaggeration but, overall, a comfortable, clean and updated cabin. If you are looking for something more rustic, go elsewhere. The cycling is challenging as the island is hilly! We hiked up Mt. Erskine and were rewarded with a beautiful view. We visited a cidery and winery and the Saturday market in Ganges-fantastic! A great break and worth going back to the island and the resort.
VERY RUDE OWNER
My wife and I were visiting the island and found everyone very nice and helpful. We decided to tour the island and see what was around. We stopped by the St Mary lake resort to inquire about rates and availability for our next stay. As we entered the office we were greeted by the most uninviting person we have ever met. From the word hello onward he was so rude like we were an interruption. We asked him about a brochure and rates and he barked " we don't have brochures... it is all on line " It sounds like it might be a nice place but we will never be staying there.... not when there is many other places to stay on Saltspring with really nice people running them. I would not recommend this place to anyone... unless you want your family to be treated with the rudeness this owner gives out.
Great spot - peaceful and a great location
Just spent a week at St. Mary Lake Resort - had a really nice, clean and comfortable little cabin. Great views over the lake and a nice little beach for swimming. Really enjoyed it - simple, and well located for exploring the Island
Perfect spot, can't wait to come back in the summer
We needed a place for our extended family of 8 to stay for one night and we made a great choice. We had cottage # 9 and # 10, side by side, lots of room. Both cottages are clean and bright. Hope to be back in the summer to enjoy the lake in warmer weather.
Great family resort
We have stayed here several times over the years. The setting is lovely and the resort is improved each year. Harold, the owner / manager runs the place himself and at peak times can be a bit frazzled. But while the buildings are fine and the location is wonderful, the dock and beach could do with some upgrading. And the equipment in the cabins is limited and you have to ask for extra flatware and plates, glasses etc if you are entertaining guests. In that sense it facilities are somewhat ungenerous. But we will return next year
Quiet lakeside oasis
We had the cabin right at the lake, 2 bedroom, jacuzzi tub kitchen with everything you need, bbq on the private deck. All cabins are behind you so you don't see anyone else unless they come down to the beach. Amazing sunsets at the lake. No motorized boats are allowed on the lake so very peaceful. The owners are friendly and do not disturb. Rooms are clean and spacious in this cabin. I highly recommend this place if you are planning a trip to Salt Spring Island.
A little bit of heaven
We are in the midst of a week on lovely Saltspring island. The weather is lovely, we have a gorgeous view of the lake.. which is great for swimming. After reading some of the reviews previously posted, some of which were a little too niggly, we brought everything with us that we might need. Harold has been a very helpful and gracious host... if there's anything missing that one might need you only have to ask. But we brought our own 'extras'.. pillows, salt and pepper, dish towels, Favorite utensils, etc. we invited our kids and grand kids over for the day to enjoy the water and the beach, and Harold was very obliging. The cabin is very clean and we're not disturbed by cleaning staff.... which would certainly happen if it was requested. The only thing harder for us is the stairs up and down to the parking lot and the hill down to the beach... but if we weren't up higher, we wouldn't have such a lovely view! We're very pleased!
Average place, nice location, poor service
The cabins are very basic and have a lovely view of the lake. Everything is in need of TLC. The dock, water crafts etc. the playground is wood and is very splintered. The owners are not friendly and if you want to have visitors, be prepared for a Spanish Inqusition. They nickle and dime you for everything including an extra dollar a nite for a baby. For 150-180$ per nite, you will be more comfortable and treated better elsewhere. I have expectations when I spend my money and they have certainly not been met.
Great locale, nice clean cabins
We moved over here from Cedar Beach Resort (where we stayed last year). Cedar Beach has great facilities, but the cabins are just too varied in quality. St Mary Lake Resort cabins are really nice and spacious, and more importantly they are clean! The cabin itself was quiet comfy and we were glad we took the one furthest away from the lake and nestled in the trees since it was very hot when we were there. The facilities are perhaps not up to Cedar Beach (the kids play area is a bit shoddy for example), but the lake is still lovely and the dock and boats are great.
Great View
We stayed here for 2 nights, first thing I would say, we would stay here again! The rate we paid ($85.00 plus tax) pout us in cabin 10. The higher number cabin is closer to the lake, so cabin 11 was lake side. We had clear view of beautiful St Mary Lake. Our room had two bedrooms, one with a queen, the other with 2 singles. A good kitchen which had a fridge / freezer, stove top and microwave. Our deck that overlooked the lake had a BBQ. All utensils were available in your room. The parking lot was a walk up some steps, felt very safe and such a quiet place to stay.
Great location for a lazy family vacation
Located on the beautiful St Mary's Lake and only a few miles from Ganges, this is a lovely spot, with good swimming and boating (although the resort's boats are in serious need of repair and tlc). The owner / manager seems a bit aloof at first, but he keeps the place spotless and is actually quite helpful. Cabins are large and clean but equipped only with the basics. Its a bit of a steep (but short) walk back from the lake to the cabins.
Our family vacation choice for 25+ years!
We just returned from another idyllic week at St. Mary Lake Resort on Saltspring Island. We started going there when our first child was small, and returned there year after year with several other families and many more children! The site on the lake is amazing and provides the perfect safe and relaxing venue for a getaway. The private access to the beach is down a shady road from the cabins and the owners have made a sandy beach, dock and grassy area with a play space for children. There are paddle and rowboats available. A huge amount of work has gone into upgrading the cabins, decks, walkways, beach and maintaining the comfort and beauty of the setting. The cabins are stocked with everything you need and if you want a fan, salt and pepper or anything extra, you only need to ask. The resort is minutes from downtown Ganges, hiking trails and the ocean. Now that the children are grown, we still enjoy a week at St. Mary Lake Resort and luckily this year we had a few of them visit us there!
We return year after year after year
We've been coming to Saltspring Island for 6 years and have stayed at St. Mary Lake Resort for the past 12+ years. The cottages are maintained beautifully. They are clean and have everything you need to cook in every day, even a propane barbeque. The views of the lake are amazing. Great beach area for kids and adults. If you're looking for a cottage, this is the best place to stay on St. Mary Lake.
The perfect lake-front resort
I've stayed here several times over the years, always in September (usually for the weekend, though my last time I was there for a whole week), and I have every intention of returning for years to come. The cabins are clean and spacious, with everything you need to look after yourself. The lake is beautiful and perfect for fishing and, thanks to the no gas-powered motor regulation, perfect for swimming. In short, I cannot recommend St. Mary Lake Resort highly enough.
Love the place but beds are not good
We return to this resort year after year and love a lot of things about it. The lake is great for swimming and for paddling a canoe or kayak. It's a really nice quiet location and the owners of the resort keep it in really good condition. If you need a good quality bed though, consider going somewhere else. If the beds were comfy I would give this resort a 5, but until that happens I can't recommend waking up sore every morning. Choose cabins 9, 10 or 11 and bring a foam mattress pad. You'll love it!
Beautiful spot, great views but not enough amenities
We've been coming to Salt SPring Island every few years since 1999, but have never stayed in the same place twice. This year we tried St Mary's Lake Resort and stayed in Cabin 9. The cabin is very well situated with a great view of the lake, and the resort is in a great spot, just north of Ganges with easy access to all the lovely corners of the island. We were a group of 4 - 2 adults, a 13 year old and an 11 year old. In the living room, there is a small sofa (a loveseat, really) and one armchair. If all four of us wanted to read at the same time, someone was in bed or at the dining table. Another comfortable place to sit would be a real help here. Similarly, there were exactly 4 cups, spoons, forks and knives, very little in the way of cookware, and no salt or pepper or any of the basic condiments that we generally find in the kitchen when we travel to cabins with kitchens. There was one roll of toilet paper in the cabin, as well as one roll of paper towels, and two dish towels. We booked for and stayed for six nights and made it on what was provided - of course we could have asked our hosts for more, but why not put a reasonable amount of supplies in the cabin? There's not even a plunger in the bathroom, and there really should be as the septic system is temperamental. There are paddle boats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks that the guests can use at no additional charge and St Mary Lake is a nice safe place for casual paddling about. The barbecue on the deck worked beautifully, as did all the appliances. We were the only visitors at the resort for most of the 6 nights we stayed and we interacted very little with the hosts - they were approachable but not outgoing, never asking us if things were good or if they could do anything to make our stay more enjoyable. If you mostly want to enjoy your privacy and the beauty of the surroundings, this is a good spot.
epic stay!
This is my second time here at this st mary lake resort and i love it!! celebrated my 30th bday here with friends and family! We stayed at cabins 7 and 8 and what a spectacular view of the lake! These cabins have been fully renovated!!! bigger kitchens and complete cutlery with tons of kitchen appliances!! this lake is great for some R & R and for those bass anglers out there haha. i would definitely come back later this fall. epic!
A real hidden gem
We were looking for somewhere different to stay on Salt Spring Island. We booked St Mary Lake Resort with a little trepidation as it had very few reviews here on TA. We should not have worried - despite its low-key profile, it's a fantastic place, and was definitely one of the highlights of our 2-week tour of the Pacific NW region. We stayed in Cottage # 9, which had a wonderful view overlooking the lake and the forested hills beyond. We were impressed to see how spacious and modern the cottage was with a large living room, adjoining kitchen / diner and 2 bedrooms (one of which is locked in the case of only 2-person occupancy. It was also spotlessly clean with everything in a good state of repair, which shows the hard work put in by the people that run the resort. There was also a large outside deck complete with good quality all-weather table and chairs and large propane barbeque. We were particularly pleased to see the barbeque as we'd had in mind having a barbeque when we made the booking. Note that there is a large supermarket (Country Market?) on the road into Ganges which has everything you could possibly need for a wonderful barbeque at St Mary Lake. Ganges itself is but an easy 10 minute drive from the resort, and there are additional shops and restaurants located there about the very scenic little harbour. We virtually had the place to ourselves, as it is a small resort and there were only another two cottages in occupation the night we stayed. The tranquil atmosphere that sunny evening as we cooked our dinner outdoors and watched the sun go down over the lake was really special, and is right up there with some of the great barbeques we've done on previous expeditions in Africa. I'd strongly recommend this resort without hesitation to anyone looking for a unique experience in a beautiful and peaceful part of British Columbia.
**** Beware*******
Just a heads up when booking this resort. They do not tell you at time of booking that it is non refundable. We had to cancel 4 days after booking and they would not refund our $$$. This was with over a months notice. The frustrating thing is that we were going to rebook for another time for a family reunion. Unfortunately due to the extremely rude treatment we received we will definately not be going back. I'm sure its a lovely resort but customer service is not their strong point!!
