Food not Good
Firstly, the base of the pizza we ordered was burnt. We ate a few slices and then asked to have it remade. Ours weren't the only burnt pizza to come out that afternoon. My partner's toasted bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was bland and very shy on cheese. The only good thing was her chips and the side salad. This was always our first stop when coming to Dullstroom, but in future we won't be stopping there at all (not even for a drink).
Terrible experience, terrible food bad management
We went there for dinner, food took 90 minutes to arrive. After repeatedly ordering a pizza without chilli for our son it still arrived with chillies, his food took an hour forty five. Owner was not involved just floating around but friendly. Our Malay curry was bland and the rice was floating in water. Ordering drinks also took forever a serious average of 30 minutes to get an order and got my repeat drink order incorrect. 10 minutes after asking for the bill i had to walk to the pay-point and ask for the bill and pay there. Bad experience, and looking at reviews we just accept bad service that is why this place still exists
Terrible Service
Went for lunch, ordered drinks and food immediately. Waited an hour for food, when it came, my daughters did not receive her tramazi and my fish where mushy and I had to send it back. We had to go find the waiter to find out where our food was. Wil not see us again.
Super stop sur la route
Accueil sympas au coin du feu par une journée de brouillard! Pub local façon saloon avec par chance quelqu'un au piano. Une halte parfaite sur la route du Kruger.
DON'T GO THERE TO WATCH THE RUGBY
Phoned to book a table to watch the Springbok's world cup rugby match that started at 9pm. Was told that tables were only available on the patio but that there were many screens there to watch the game. We were also told to be there by 6pm, which we accepted. On arrival, we were shown to our table but literally had to climb over chairs to get there as they had tried to cram as many tables as possible onto the patio. In addition, the table we were given had no view of any television because the very small TVs that were on the patio were blocked from view by the patio rafters. The owner didn't seem to immediately appreciate that we had an issue with this since the only reason we were coming was to watch the game. Eventually we were told that they would make a plan for us to sit elsewhere in the restaurant for the game. When it got close to game time, the owner stuck us in another corner that also didn't have a view of any TV and was completely unapologetic when we eventually had to leave with 10 minutes to go till game time to try and find somewhere else to watch.
Great food, better fun
I always like to go where the local people of the town go for dinner or drinks, and i found it. Visited on the Friday as well as on the Saturday, this must tell you something. Owner is always around, very at tentative and the food is great. You can also start you own party whenever you want, all will join in. For good, cheap food, don't mis this one.
RIP Duck & Trout
We went on a Friday night. My wife and I are Dullstroom old-timers, and we have been to Duck & Trout many a times. We love wine, but we know this establishment does not specialise in wine. However, they always had at least one decent Sauvignon Blanc. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (which the waiter said was available), but he came back to say that they had no more Sauvignon Blanc available. My wife suggested that we go to another restaurant. I then asked the waiter if I could go and get our own wine, and he said yes. I did so. We had an open bottle of Diemersdal with about a glass of wine left, and a full one. I took both. When I got my bill, he had corkage (R168) for 2 bottles of wine. I told the waiter that the one bottle was almost empty. He then fetched the manager, who was clearly not impressed with us at all. I told him that the only reason I had to go back to our house to fetch wine was because they did not have a Sauvignon Blanc, and his response was that they do have a box and could sell us by the glass (which we had no clue about. I then said to him it is ok, I will just deduck the one corkage from the tip, at which stage he called his chuck out to escort me out of the restaurant. He also threatened me with physical force. On top of everything, the food was terrible. The duck and cherry pie was like a pie-soup, the trout was totally dry and the pizza was also as hard as nails. It is a real pity that an establishment that I supported for many years since Wayne owned it is now owned by a bombastic person with no manners. Fortunately Dullstroom is endowed with many excellent restaurnants, like Mrs Simpsons and we are always welcomed by our friends Brian and Stephen.
Disappointed
Most disappointing, tepid hot chocolate, undercooked pizza and the most horrendous music. Restaurant has had a revamp which is positive but they need to get the basics right. Simple food, should simply be good and delicious.
Not worth the visit
We visited on 2 Jan 23. The Beer was the only good thing. The Duck was like shoe leather requiring a steak knife to cut. 2 people ordered the trout and it was overcooked, cold and nasty. I had the duck and cherry pie which was passable but underwhelming. Not worth the effort not the expense. In the words of one of my companions - daai duck was kak. Having made the effort to visit Dullstroom, the effort wasn't reciprocated. Find somewhere else for beer.
Disappointing
Although Duck and Trout get points for being open on the 1st of Jan, on a Sunday evening, when 90% of other places in Dullstroom were closed, I would not come back here. The service is very poor with long waiting times, lack of attention from our waitress and an overly intrusive manager who came to check the tables but stood imposingly over the table making sexist remarks and was clearly not aware that we found his presence uncomfortable. There is also a very questionable smoking policy with the main smoking area situated in the largest indoor section where non smokers are having to walk through to access the tiny non smoking section, not even sure it is legal to allow smoking inside like this in a place serving food and with no barriers between non smoking and smoking sections... In terms of food, we ordered pizzas (one pineapple and mushroom and one trout) and were extremely disappointed. The pizza was so bland and tasteless I had to resort to using chili hot sauce and asking for garlic (not provided with the pizzas as is customary at pizzerias) in order to make it edible. A real pity but the other low ratings confirm my experience. Number 21 on TripAdvisors restaurant list for Dullstroom for a reason.
Unique place
Great food from the sushi to the pizza's and pasta's. The best vibes in Dullstroom with good music and company. Would definitely go back in the future for more!
Dont waste your time or money unless you go only for the beers and a burger or pizza
We expected more. We have been to this restaurant before, (about 10 years ago as we live outside of SA now), and were looking forward to the ambiance and good food we were used to and remebered. Unfortunately the food was very disapponting. Menu advertises butter but they serve margerine, trout salad is a strip of lettuce on a normal dining plate, one quartered cherry tomato, and very little else apart from a lot of salad dressing poured over. Three small strips of smoked trout on the side and a blob of potato salad. The trout pasta was completely tasteless, bland and without any hint of the herbs promised by the menu. Hardly any trout inside... Just a creamy bland pasta. On the way out, after paying, I spoke to the owner, who defensively claimed this was the first time anyone ever 'complained' about this. It was not a complaint, but constructive feedback. Most customers would keep quiet and never go back. There are lots of other restaurants in Dullstroom that make an effort The Duck & Trout is not one of them
Undervalued Pub
This pub deserves way better reviews. It has a lot of ambiance. Not so busy as the more obvious pubs on the main road. We haven't tried a lot on the menu but the two items we had were pretty good. Awesome fireplace and pizza oven. Very cozy indeed
Awful food
The vibe was quite nice and the manager quite friendly. The food was awful and unpalatable. Quite a fun rowdy place
Nice pub
Its a nice pub with not too many people. Music was a bit loud as we couldn't hear each other but they did turn it down after we asked. The oxtail, duck and cherry pie as well as the pork chops was good. The trout pâté was way too salty. Good relaxed place for drinks and food. Typical pub vibes.
Nice for a drink
Decent beer, Great pizzas... Nice little pub if you are from out of the area and want to chat to locals. I have stayed in South Africa many times and always visit this place when i am over and have always found it to be friendly. There are also a few characters in Dullstroom that will be found from time to time in this pub :)
Absolute rubbish
Never again, total f..... g disgrace, no toilet paper, dirty, half painted, over priced and Dullstroom accommodation could not inform about the cheap dirty living conditions when booking was made???? It would have been better sleeping on the side of the road Televisions was removed, no lights on the walkways (tripping hazards), dirty and torn bedding, I can go on and on.... duck and trout is not worth it
Never again
I am so sorry to give this place a negative review but unfortunately I am left with no choice. I had vouchers for 2 evenings at the restaurant. The first evening I ordered the trout, it came straight from the fridge with dry rice and terrible spinach and when I asked why the trout was icy cold, I was told it should be like this. The second evening I ordered a pizza while watching rugby, they forgot about my order and when I asked the manager, she apologized and said it was because they were busy. Unfortunately she left it there and only when I again mentioned my forgotten order, did the waiter make a plan by making the pizza himself. Hats off to the waiter. The great side is that the pizza was great. I realize that Covid plays a role but the owners will really have to make a plan or else the once great restaurant will not survive.
Poor service, but good vibe
We visited Dullstroom for a weekend away and wanted to grab some dinner & drinks. Duck & Trout seemed nice from the outside, and it was cosy inside with people doing some karaoke. We waited long before we could order drinks, and the waiter told us he recommends not ordering pizza, because it will take more than an hour. We also waited very lpong for our drinks and decided to get pizza somewhere else.
Long weekend
We popped in there after a long day, to have something to eat, the chips were substandard, and in the heart of COVID-19 no one was taking any precautions, a bit disappointing and very dangerous. The entire atmosphere was tatty.
Service is SHOCKING
Food was cold when it arrived, when we had ordered the waitress was rude and food took 45mins to an hour! We were told that the pizza oven would be ready at 12 and we were told at 1pm that the oven is not ready. The drink service was appalling, waited for 10-15 mins for 4 drinks and the restaurant was not busy at all. In the 45min to an hour of us waiting for our food the waitress did not come round once to check if everything was okay. Really disappointed that we having to end our trip with this experience, would definitely recommend not coming!
Great, I mean GREAT service
Just before South Africa went into lockdown, I drove through Dullstroom and noticed a quaint pub called The Duck and Trout. I promised myself I would go in the next time I was in the area. Surely with that name, they would serve my two favourite foods. A year later, I knew I was going to be back in the area and I contacted Lydia who told me that not only were they open, but sure enough duck and trout were on the menu. The problem was that I have weird food allergies. " No problem, " I was told. " We cater for everyone. We will make our famous duck pie for you from scratch " This meant that they could control what went in it. When I got there, the red carpet was rolled out for me. Charl came to the table and let me know exactly what had gone into the meal. I had preordered some extra duck and cherry pie as take away. I was not disappointed! The meal was absolutely fantastic! They have an extensive menu and even have live music some nights. It is a place I'll definitely return to. Come and try it for yourself. Duck & Trout, Dullstroom thank you so much
Saturday night group dinner
Have stayed and eaten here in the past. Group dinner on the Saturday was pleasant and enjoyable. We had pizza's, duck & cherry pie, burgers and a special (T bone steak & draft = R125). Unfortunately no sauvignon blanc wine available. Sadly some patrons still find it acceptable to smoke inside a restaurant despite this being illegal and inconsiderate.
Unassuming
Very simple. They have waiters that will serve you, but no noticeable management; which is fine if you want a simple uncomplicated snack lunch etc. The place is well used, and years of spilled beer and cigarette smoke permeate the furniture; it could do with a deep clean. We experienced nothing unpleasant, nor anything special. The highlight was the availability of ice cold draught. Great for a quick beer or fast meal; not for special occasions.
Well worth a visit!
This charming venue is a delight! Wonderful hospitality! We enjoyed the delicious, legendary duck & cherry pie. Thank you, we'll be back!
How to ruin a evening meal
Please please do not have main meals at this dive!! Starters good but main meals are terrible! Ordered a Eisbein came dry with this cheap horrible mustard, you better of with Mustard out of a packet at a garage. I raised this with the waiter then with the manager Mark, got the reponse that he has told the owner multiple times that they need proper mustard with nobody listening. Ruined our hole night and then they cant even give you a proper takeaway container! My wife's chicken schnitzel was under par and heavy full of oil, luckily editable. Their mash had chunks of potatoes in and was bland! Thank you for ruining a great evening with my wife and my birthday dinner!!! This after us giving up my wife's chair for her broken foot for them to seat more clients. The starter was good to be fair but that is where it ends sadly! Please please do not have the Eisbein, poachers down the street do it better cheaper with a lot more class and they are a pub!!!
Good food after lock down!!
Food was great and seating outside great. Frendly staff and pricing inline! Well done till next time. Keep it up Duck and trout. Recommend the trout prepert in a wood fire oven!!
2nd time happy here
Last year, we spent a weekend in Dullstroomand pulled in here for the rugby. Staff were totally amazing with my vegan pasta request - which doesn't feature on the menu. On our return a year later, we were once again greeted warmly and both front of house and the kitchen were happy to accommodate my vegan requests, even returning from the kitchen to let me know that the foccacia is made with milk. That's how you know a kitchen really gets it. Having a great time and another glass of wine.

I recently went looking for this restaurant online as I wanted to book it for our next trip to Dullstroom. Sadly, I see the recent reviews have been 'revolting' etc. It's really sad, because I remember having a memorable, delicious and hearty meal at this cozy pub. Here's hoping management jump in and make some serious changes, if so we'll be back in a heartbeat
Duck and Trout what a lowdown
Whent there for lunch. Order a fish and chips. We could only eat the fish. The chips looked like it was last month's chips that was only heated up. Upon our arrival we asked if they can serve us a it was loadshedding and they said yes. But the quality of food was unsatisfactory. Will never go there again. What a waist of money.
Where to start? When the pizza
Where to start? When the pizza description is beef strips and you get served beef mince then you need to start asking questions. According to manager / owner beef mince is just a diff form of beef strips. Pathetic ! Also had to constantly wave and flag down the waitress. Don't waste your time on this establishment
Nice " kuierplek " (enjoy) drinks and food
Really a nice place to visit and enjoy drinks and well prepared food nice fire place for that rainy days. The mozzerella cheese starter great. Great we'll prepared oxtail. Great service. Please visit.
Wish we would have a pub like that at home
Wish we would have a pub like that in our hometown! Great atmosphere and good music. Service is great and the staff super friendly. The owner is super welcoming! Definitely would come back!!!
Not great!
We stopped off here to get a quick lunch on our way home. It took over an hour for our food to arrive, which was apparently because the staff didn't arrive at work. The poor Manageress was running around like crazy but just couldn't get to everything. The food was really not up to scratch. Won't go there again.
Revolting all round
Owner has a disgusting attitude. Waited 1 hour for the most revolting food. 2 frozen pieces of packet fish, 1 disgusting dry excuse for a steak and then some slop that was called " creamy fish pasta ". 4x dirty wine glasses given to us (lipstick on all the glasses). And the rude owner blasted the music at an absurd volume to entertain his family, no care for any paying customers. And to top it all off the owner was happy for us to leave without paying the bill. I was told he does care but it was quite clear he had been drinking while working and didn't care at all. The pic is my " fresh grilled fish " according to the owner, coming in at a cost of R99!!! Really!!! Disgusting
Not worth the effort
Stopped at The Duck and Trout for Saturday lunch, what a disappointing experience. Waited nearly 50min for 4 meals and there was a sum total of 4 tables eating. Not sure what the delay could've been. Dark, smoky, gloomy place inside, outside seats are bombarded with loud terrible music. The waiters are friendly but don't seem particularly excited either. The food was ok, not bad but nothing spectacular. Don't bother, there are heaps of better places in Dullstroom to eat.
Dreadful place- shocking service
Avoid at all costs..... arrived for lunch with group of 7 - ordered drinks and food (mostly pizza as they used to have great pizza there) waited absolute ages- over 45 mins and no sign of food. Other tables arrived after us and ate and left. Asked staff and they looked at me as if I was an alien speaking a strange language- nobody had anything to say- no pizza was in the oven. Asked more staff- they all vanished into the back rooms and ignored me. Finally a manager strolled out from somewhere, we explained it had been ages and nobody seemed to have even ordered our food- I told him we were not interested in waiting a minute longer and left. Will never go back.
NIGHTMARE
Only reason it receives a 1star because the food was okay. Terrible services and staff attitude. Owner looks scruffy. At least 40 open tables and they had to run around looking for a menu. We had to share one menu. Waited 90 minutes for a good. Few other tables just got up and left. The supermarket across the road serves better food! Food portions were small for the price we pay. The carne calzone was so sour with a big hit of raw garlic in the back of my throat. The drinks were terrible and they hardly had any stock. Will never recommend this place to anyone. PLEASE AVOID
Simple Pub Fare
We popped into Duck & Trout for a quick bite to eat before going to our whisky tasting - we had to line our stomachs and decided that pub grub would be the best way to do it. The menu was fairly standard for a pub and we settled for a couple of snack baskets. The food was decent, the service was good and we left with full stomachs.
Outdated and nothing exciting
The menu is very limited and outdated. Music inside the restaurant was so loud, one could not have a conversation with the person sitting opposite. Restaurant not adhering to smoking laws. The service was slow. Overall as disappointing experience.
GOOD FOOD GREAT SERVICE
On our recent weekend getaway to Dullstroom we decided to fish for a trout at the local restaurant instead of a dam. We were impressed with the service and food at Duck and Trout.
New management but still ignoring smoking laws
I have owned a holiday cottage in Dullstroom for 20 years. For many years, The Duck and Trout was an institution. Great pub, super vibe, and reasonable food. We used to book weeks in advance top make sure we had a table for Saturdays rugby. Over the years it has deteriorated into a smokey drinking hole and didn't see our custom for many years. We thought about trying it this last weekend as had heard it was under new management. As we walked in, it was noticeable that they have spent a bit, a very small bit, on changing the bar somewhat. However, the main restaurant is still a smoking restaurant. What they have have is a step into the non-smoking section. No doors, no extractors, no screens, nothing. Not adequate and not lawful. What has also not changed is their popularity. Not a single table was taken on Saturday lunch in the main restaurant. And just down the road on the same day, the non smoking mayfly had a waiting list of 40 people. Come on owners, times have changed. In the old days, every restaurant was a smoking restaurant, now there are laws which you continue to ignore. Do you ignore health standards in the kitchen as well?
Service has deteriorated to the point we won't come back
We go here every time we we are in Dullstroom. Not again. A simple order of 3 pizzas and a plate of chips arrived with 1 pizza correct another incorrect and the other 2 items missing completely. After the waitron blaming the kitchen they still could not get it right. We were told we would be given a discount for the poor service. Finally when the bill arrived, it was wrong. Items we had were missing, new items we didn't have were added, and no discount. I had to alter the bill myself based on what we actually had. Not a manager in sight, nor an apology, nor the discount we were promised. It was Easter weekend, Dullstroom was packed. The duck and trout was almost empty. How is that possible? Google reviews are showing poor scores. Now it all makes sense. It was empty for a reason and looks like it will be staying that way.
Cherry Duck pie to die for
The cherry duck pie is excellent. But the staff can be more helpful. We sat outside on the veranda, and had to call the waiter every time.
Menu lacking as Chef was on Holiday - Good Pizza though
We didn't need to book, the beer is cold and the pizzas are great, there was a number of items not available as the Chef was on holiday, service good staff friendly
Hit or Miss
We stopped for a drink and a bite to eat, and decided that we'd give the Duck and Trout a try. It was a long weekend and it was clear that the staff had their hands full. We watched two tables leave after not being served and two other tables wait a long night time for their meals, one table that had ordered well before we had. The food was tasty, and pretty average, I've had far better and I've also had worse. Must admit that the bottom half of town gets a lot more traffic and the other restaurants and attractions seem to be of a better quality and a better alround experience.

Very disappointing
Booked a table for 17h30 because I knew they would be busy. Arrived at 17h30. Sat for 15 mins with no service, no drinks, no menus. Left to go somewhere else. Don't bother.
Good food vs Bad bed
We had good food, the fire place in the room was adding a pleasant ambiance, but the bed (mattress) was not so good. No TV in the room so we could not even watch the rugby or anything. Still walking with backache after 03 days and only slept 01 night.

Poor service
Poor service and blaring music made this a forgettable experience. A place we used to love and visited for many years has deteriorated to slum standard. If the status quo remains this establishment will close shortly as nobody visits..... a Saturday evening with major rugby games on and only four tables occupied???? In previous years one could barely move on such an occasion.
Ugh
Stopped here in Jan 2018 for lunch, the place was empty which says something. We ordered toasted sandwiches, took forever to arrive and were disgusting. soggy and tasteless. Would certainly not recommend you even consider stopping here
Nightout
Was disappointed in the general condition of the place not what it was a couple of years ago. The service is pretty avarage and the attitude of the chef was really bad after we quetion the platter on which he substituted 3 of the items without ever consulting us. The price of drinks are expensive reconsidering the place.
Local Pub & Hangout
We recently visited Duck & Trout to try out their famous Duck & Cherry Pie. On arrival the pub was in shambles due to renovations and additions. We chose not to eat but had a few drinks instead. The pub oozed of great atmosphere and we will return another time for our pie.
Great food but ambiance not what it was
The restaurant has been around for years and I've been going since the early 90s. It was a Sunday night, so that may have been part of the reason for the lack of ambiance. The non-smoking section is now a tiny section of the place and is off to the side. the lighting was very dim but the furniture was at least the old furniture with character and not the new cafe-culture, modern plastic stuff that they have in the main section of the restaurant which is now a smoking section. Service was variable - initial service was good to be seated and to receive menus bu when we asked for a bit more time we then had to wait quite a while. All this said, the food was superb. We had pizzas and a burger. The burger was delicious and homemade. There is an option for children to make their own pizzas and there is a worn out play ground outside.
Awesome food
Awesome! Great food and great service ! Loved it! Do order the mush and duck room appetiser dish! Dodgy entrance at first glance, but awesome inside!
Shocking
Haven't been in years.. so disappointed. Terrible food. Frozen boxed tiny hake, limp and bitter salad. No salt or pepper or any other condiments Shocking service. Wouldn't recommend eating here at all. Huge pity since this used to be a highlight in Dullstroom. Drive past seek a new restaurant
Pity about the smoking
Still cannot understand how establishments flout the law. Indoor smoking is not permitted and when I made a comment I was told that it's no different to the smoke from the fire that I was enjoying. If we hadn't already ordered and didn't already have drinks I would have got up and left. The duck and cherry pie was tasty as was the creamy trout pasta. Service was reasonably good and prices weren't bad but the overall experience was off putting because of the smoking.
A place that is not sure what it wants to be
Upon arrival we asked to sit in the smoking area inside. The establishment looks nice with a large bar and a large fire place. I had a nice meal with very slack service but that is not my problem. The fact that inside a pub in the smoking area this place allows young children to run around and make a noise screaming at the top og there lungs. Its not only a massive issue to the rest of the people who come here to have a meal beer and relax, but it is also illegal to allow children in a pubs smoking area. I have a big issue with this and as i work for health and safty of johannesburg i asked the parents of the child to please keep it down and take the 3 year old child to the non smoking area. After this i was treated badly by staff and nothing was done. Last time i come here and its the last time anyone should since they break the law and dont care about customers.
Lunchtime lows and highs!
Had lunch with family there the 31st. Very good waiting staff and up to the task. Unfortunately the 2 orders of oxtail (which was very tasty) was too tough to get off the bone so we had to return it for something else. The replacements (curry and a schnitzel) was very tasty and well prepared. The owner (manager?) was very apologetic about the oxtail and exchanged it without hassle. The T-bone was ok but not great, I'm afraid! It is too thin and trying to get it medium rare the way I like AND get some colour into it proved to be an impossibility. It was VERY tender, but a bit overdone. I did not send it back but found it to be average at best. Duck and cherry pie a winner, according to my wife. Another issues was the playground. I do not think the broken glass around the trees is a great idea. I assume it is some form of safety glass but it does not look like the kind of thing I want my kids to play around in. Otherwise a nice place and I will go there again. Maybe they got the oxtail a bit more tender and will give it another go.
Duck and trout
Been here twice with friends. Good food, reasonable price. And not noisy like a similar place in the town. Mini eisbein was delicious. And just the right portion. Manager and owner Wayne is amazing and so hands on. Our waitress Maria was excellent.
Pretty good
Whilst in dullstroom for the weekend we watched the ruugby at the duck and trout. Waitress Tristen organised us an amazing table to watch the game from. The chicken schnitzel was a little small for our liking but the duck and cherry pie was better than others that i had had in this area-but perhaps the sauuce could have been thicker. We enjoyed the friendly staff and good vibe. Will return on oir nect visit. I would get there earlier in the afternoon if you are watching a game there asnit becomes quite busy.
A smoky bar
A local directed us to the Duck & Trout for take-away pizza. We waited exactly 80 minutes in a smokey bar. Was it worth the wait? Perhaps. If smoking bars and lots of time are your thing - go for it.
Good Home-Cooked Food with a Smile
This cosy little restaurant offers a range of good home-cooked South African food with a warm welcome. Parking is right outside and the tables are well spaced offering a quiet private experience. We enjoyed meeting the owner and she gave suggestions on what to choose. The tables are rustic with carpets underneath to add warmth and comfort. Our Tips: Meals cater to children and adults. Portions are generous and well priced.
Okayish
We had their famous Duck and cherry pie. it was okay but didn't blow me away. the sitting area was not very clean, there were flies buzzing around. I was really expecting a lot from this place but was disappointed : (. if well maintained, this would have been a gem.
Duck & Cherry Pie
Stayed here for 2 nights. The rooms were basic but clean & practical with plenty of hot water. Really good value too. The bar & restaurant was cosy enough & we had good service. The speciality of the house is the Duck & Cherry Pie which was a very tasty combination, well cooked served with a salad. Worth a try if there. My friend had the stuffed trout which was good, but the bed of rice is not needed in my opinion, but is also recommended. The Duck & Trout is worth a visit when in town.

Good Pizza
My favourite stopover when passing through Dullstroom. The pub is always busy and has a big open fireplace during winter. Pub offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Draught beer available and nice menu with pizzas done in a wood fire oven.
Nice Enough
We had heard so much about this place but I personally found the atmosphere to be lacking. Be prepared to wait but the Duck Pie was amazing. Also the choice of beer stock was low when we went but it was over a long weekend.
Duck and Cherry Pie Blues
This is a bit of a tough review to write as this evening we went to the Duck and Trout, there were some serious management issues which affected their performance. I guess it could have happened to anyone and sometimes it's best to see a restaurant at its worst. I called ahead to reserve a table at the Duck and Trout and asked for a table near the fireplace as it is winter and pretty chilly here in Dullstroom. We entered the busy establishment at around 6:30 and noticed that there were no reserved tables and went to the bar to wait till our allotted booked time. The pub - which is really what it is - was smoky and bustling with all types - from weekend bikers to bachelor boys and the odd family in between. At around 7:15 we managed to hood a waiter and asked for our table - they miraculously disappeared and we knew it was up to us to hustle a spot - reservation was meaningless. The bar was well stocked although the drinks were pretty expensive - not what you would have thought of an establishment in the sticks. The menu was written on a large chalk board hovering above the seated area and was short and simple (with no prices) - pub fare. We had been told that the manager had left after an altercation that afternoon and the staff were without a captain. The owner had come in to micro-manage - but things were definitely off kilter. We were also blessed with a waitress who, despite her friendly nature, was new to the job and was battling to find her groove. We understood and ordered out meal. For starters we ordered a breaded mozzarella " Carriage " which was delightful - not oily and came with a fresh, well-constructed side salad. Unfortunately the waitress brought our main course at the same time which we sent back to give us space and time to enjoy the starter. We ordered a Duck and Cherry Pie with a side of vegetables for the main. Apart from it costing R140 for the pie and arriving with French fries as opposed to vegetables - we decided not to rock the boat and tuck in. The pie was glorious. Light fluffy puff pastry covered a well of deep, rich duck meat and black cherries. I loved it although my partner found it a bit sweet. All in all - if you can forgive the service hick-up - the smoky environment (with kids running around) and the high prices - the Duck and Trout " Duck and Cherry Pie " is a must for any visitor to Dullstroom. Just pack your patience and be prepared to not get exactly what you ordered.
Basic accommodation
Very basic but functional no frills accommodation. Duck and cherry pie is extremely over priced for what you get. Room is ok, fire place is great, bed is comfortable. Geyser is small so shower quickly if there's two of you.
Cosy fishing town with a drinking problem
We have been coming to dullstroom for many many years and the Duck and Trout has always been a staple of the experience. Nothing fancy, but absolutely perfect for what it is. It's a fishing town with a great heart in a beautiful setting. The foods always hearty, the fires are always warm and the beers are plentiful. Great place for a good vibe and some hearty home style cooking after a long day fishing.
No Duck and Cherry Pie but plenty of abuse
This is a very disappointing review, we have visited this restaurant before and had good experiences unfortunately that was brought to a halt by an abusive patron who became very threatening when I complained there was no signature dish available. My wife and myself ordered the stuffed trout instead. One portion only was delivered, when I challenged the waiter he apologised and said he thought we only wanted one portion, which was strange because my wife added veggies to her order. The manager then came to the table after my wife's portion was delivered, 20 minutes after mine and started to explain about the Duck and Cherry pie's availability. I explained that it was a signature dish and to run out wasn't the best of planning. I then complained about my wife's food being late. too which he became visibly agitated and more and more aggressive to the point which he started to point his finger at me and looked like he was about to hit me. He then called me some very uncomplimentary names and withdrew to the kitchen. The waiter came and apologised to which the manager then re-appeared and accused my of lying about my wife's food being late, he also told the waiter that he mustn't give us the bill. We had eaten so I left cash on the table to cover our bill and left. Never to return.
Is this for real
We arrived in Dullstroom on a Sunday evening at 19:00 to find the pavements rolled up. This seemed to be the only place open for food. I cannot describe how gob-smacked I was to see people smoking inside. This was followed by a shout and scream quiz show so even those who did not participate were forced to listen to the very loud quiz mistress. When she took a break loud music was the substitute. Even more shock was in store.. We witnessed a waiter eating slices of left over pizza whilst he waited for the next pizza order, and then wiping his hands on his trousers! The pizza is thin crust and tasty. When this is the only show in town you do what you have to but we would never return!
Oxtail from hell
Serving oxtail with instant mashed potato should be declared a crime. This is only surpassed by serving oxtail tough enough to still be part of the ox. Pity. Owners did their best to apologies but it should be removed from the menu
Everything you are reading is true!
This place really is unhospitable! In Dullstroom there are many nice restaurants and pubs but this is not one of them. We made a reservation for 13 people and they just didn't keep it for us. When we got there the guy told us he thought we wouldn't like the table he reserved for us because of flies. My question is: who would then? Management is also non existing!
Local vibe - non-touristy. Honest and non-pretentious
Happy experiences here. Nothing flashy - just straight forward pub with good pizza ovens and fires in winter. Nothing fancy - really nice to get the local vibe.
Quick refreshment stop
I had been to the duck and trout many years ago and it hasn't changed much - this being a good thing. We were there on a Tuesday afternoon for a coffee and soup (with brilliant homemade bread) so it wasn't the busiest, but the food quality was good and the service was friendly and welcoming. I would imagine it would be great place to watch sport and have a beer, especially in Winter with the open log burning fire

Pizza as good as in Italy
We stopped at this informal pub / restaurant on our way from Kruger Park to Johannesburg. We ate delicious pizza and focaccia prepared with high quality ingredients (and we are Italian !!). Last but not least, we were served very fast by a lovely and kind waiter (Percy). Perfect option for those who are on their way to / from Kruger Park or who are visiting Dullstrom (one of the nicest town along this route).
Devine pizza
Best pizza in Dullstroom! Service was quick and friendly. The smoking and non smoking areas are somewhat confusing! It seems to be a smoking zone wherever you sit! Typical pub atmosphere. If you are a pizza lover definitely stop in!!
Avoid
Anyone visiting Dullstroom should please avoid this place. Hygiene very questionable, and we eventually cancelled our order because they were too busy with takeaways. To make things worse, and there's no compliance with smoking regulations. There are far, far better options in Dullstroom!! Try Mayfly or Mrs Simpsons!
Duck and Cherry Pie for Lunch WOW
What delicious food we had. Thank you to the Staff and Management for their spectacular service. Definitely will recommend this Pub and Bar to anyone who want to be treated with dignity. Love the homely atmosphere of this place and they will see us again. WOW keep up the service.
A pub is a pub.
Effectively is just another pub. Atmosphere is quite festive. Food to order in the heart of 'trout country'... so eat trout!! Food prices are reasonable (ish) and normal pub fare is also available. Shared a snack basket with friends.... very moreish. Can be noisy if sport is the focus of the day (we were there on a Saturday afternoon - rugby time). Live music on a Saturday evening
Excellent Pub and Grill - Accommodation
Stopped at Duck and Trout for supper and sleepover while passing throught to our next distination. Food was great and accommodation was perfect. Enjoyed the fireplace and the warm atmosphere of the Reastuarant and Room. Will defanately go back and highly recommended. Friendly staff.
Best pizza in Mpumalanga
Lovely, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. We arrived without making a booking and waited around half an hour at the bar but very well worth the wait! We recommend making a reservation if you would like to avoid the wait. The pizza was exquisite, with a thin, crunchy base. The salads were fresh and exciting. Both portions were very generous. We highly recommend a visit to the Duck and Trout! You most certainly will not be disappointed.
Wow!!
Now this is a great little place, we had the pleasure of visiting this establishment. Maria was our waitress and did a stunning job. The owner Wayne chatted to our table a bit and was ver welcoming and friendly. The food was excellent and the chilled vibe was definitely amazing. Thank you guys!!!! Will be back
Very poor
Six of us ordered some pub baskets to share, the chicken, riblets and sausage rolls were just about inedible, the fries and deep fried mozzarella Is all I could stomach. My advice for Duck and Trout is to Duck around it.
Gone downhill fast!
This is normally a regular stop and this time we were a group of 14 friends travelling through, staying over in beautiful accommodation, but it was 'happy hour' and the place was packed with people drinking, not eating, and we were pushed to the annexure of the restaurant. Service was terrible and the normal wonderful food was terrible. Prices have skyrocketed at R140 for the duck and cherry pie (which wasn't even available) and the wine list weak. Won't be going back to our old favourite.
Good all-round pub experience
A bit of an institution for us when visiting Dullstroom. Great spot for a few cold ones while watching the game on the big screen. Good pub food and variety. Pizza is a winner. Added outside play area for kids and dogs

The food was great accompanied by a awesome vibe. Accommodation was arranged with effecient speed dispite being very busy. SERVICE at the bar was fantastic we felt like locals! 10 out of 10 guys. Major improvement overall. See you soon for sure.
Stay Away!!
We were a group of 12 that went there for a Birthday Celebration on Saturday 22 July and were seated outside. It took the waitress more than an hour to bring the first round of drinks and then another hour to bring TERRIBLE pizzas and then another hour to bring a round of shooters to celebrate the event! We eventually left and went To Mrs Simpsons.... What a difference! Good food, good service, just EXCELLENT all round :-) So don't waste your time going to Duck and Trout.
To be Missed
Walked in, sat down. Got up and left. Difficult to have an enjoyable meal with most of the patrons smoking, both inside and outside the establishment. I realise it is a " Pub " but maybe " smokehouse " would be a better description.
Cozy if you're a smoker - I'm not
Another reviewer mentioned the segregation of smokers in the pub and non-smokers in the " outback. " While the front has the pub ambiance, the back most assuredly does not! I felt like I was being punished. Service was friendly enough but very slow as it was the off season and there appeared to be only one wait staff working both areas. I had to try the Duck & Cherry Pie as I am unlikely to ever encounter that combination again. It was actually pretty darn good. I was afraid it would be too sweet with too little duck but in fact it was loaded with duck and only a few cherries. The puff pastry was a little underdone in the center but the rest was delicious. One of our party had the stuffed trout and was happy with his choice. Dullstroom closes everything at 5pm and this is one of the very few places that remains open - which is what drove us to be there in the first place. It wouldn't break my heart to return but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again.
Best Cherry pie
This was 1 of 2 open Restaurants on a Sunday evening in Dullstroom and looks much better from inside that the outside appearance. The food is well priced, excellent service and the food is well prepared. The restaurant seems very popular between the local people. I will be back again, The Cherry Duck pie and Stuffed Trout is both excellent choices
Proper Pub
Any pub worth its salt needs to be friendly and welcoming. The Duck & Trout wins on that score. As a visitor to this quaint town for a few days it is always reassuring to find that you quite easily have another " local " to go to. Good pub atmosphere with a legendary Happy Hour on a Thursday.
Average if you're a smoker or student
When we walked in we were greeted by clouds of cigarette smoke. The place felt more like a student hang-out rather than anything else. We decided to go elsewhere.

My friends both had vegetarian pizza, good size and tastey. I had the duck and cherry pie, crispy pastry lots of meat inside. Reasonable prices. Owner friendly.
Nice clean affordable PLACE TO SLEEP THE NIGHT
My review is not of the restaurant but to introduce this place as an alternative place to rest the night. We arrive in dullstroom very late in the evening, 8 pm without a place to stay. Driving from Berlin to Dullstroom involved driving through meandering hill slopes and the eerie thick haze - when all of a sudden two lights appear from a far and slowly comes closer. With no where to stay, I am pleasantly surprised with the warmth of the locals. Without mentioning names, I was recommended by a hotel, that was full, to another accommodation. Driving around, I came to a beautiful resthouse, and because of cost reason, the person in charge not only recommend but brought us to this quiet clean place to rest our heads. I think there should be more of such basic affordable accommodation for people, like me, who just want to rest our heads for the night. I realise that the expensive beautiful resthouses are meant for the local South African visitors.
Out of Pie!
We had been recommended the famous Duck & Cherry Pie and came here specifically with that in mind. Sadly they were out of Pie, so we asked if they would have it for lunch the following day and were told that they would have it. However, when we came back to following day they didn't have it after all - very dissapointing! Instead we had ribs, which were under done and oxtail stew which was at best average. The fries were good! The first day the service was really bad, it was obvious the guy was really bored. On the second day however, the server was very attentive and friendly. He offered up stories about Dullstroom and was a great ambassador for the town. We would recommend trying the Pie, since we never got the chance. Otherwise don't bother.
