A Disappointing Stay with a Respectful Resolution

We recently stayed at the Sandman Hotel in Smithers, BC, and unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We had paid for and reserved a room with a king-sized bed, but upon arrival, we were given a room with a queen-sized bed instead. Since it was the weekend of the fall fair and other accommodations in the area were fully booked, we had no choice but to stay. Traveling with an infant, we didn't have the time or flexibility to find alternative lodging as our baby needed to go to bed. As a family that bed-shares, this situation was uncomfortable. A queen-sized bed is nearly a foot and a half smaller than a king-sized bed, and this drastically affected the quality of our stay. The front desk staff did her best to help us with the resolution. She was friendly and did the best she could within the power she had, but the overall management of the situation was highly disappointing. On the evening of our stay we emailed hotel management on August 23rd to express our disappointment. To their credit, on August 26th, a manager reached out to us. The manager was respectful, acknowledged the difficulties we faced during our stay, and took the time to listen to our concerns. As a gesture of goodwill, they offered us a $100 credit to our RSVP rewards account. While the initial experience was far from what we had hoped for, the respectful response from the management did help to bring some closure to the situation. We appreciate the effort they made to address our concerns and offer compensation, which somewhat alleviated the disappointment we felt.

Good overnight stay

Comfortable beds and a clean room. Room is quiet - small amount of traffic noise but nothing terrible. Happy with the room for $140. Easy parking and access but there's limited parking. No elevator but one easy flight of stairs. Walking distance to restaurant (s)

1990 called... you missed your renovation appointment

Oh, my. I booked this because my usual hotel wasn't available. Let's start with the biggies: -Security bar has been broken off. -Most rooms here have a key card, but this looks like it's been kicked in because it has a different door plate and uses a physical key. (I included a picture of another room with proper lock.) -No emergency lighting or sprinklers in the room. Not even sure that's legal, despite the age of the building. Regardless, it's unsafe. -No wheelchair access to the hotel whatsoever. Even the entrance. Stairs only. Again, would be surprised if legal. -Room is musty, dim, and in poor repair. Damage on door, walls and tub. -Ancient green carpet worm down and damaged by previous furnishings. Nowhere near the level of quality I've come to expect from this brand. The bed. is reasonably comfortable and seems clean. The room appears to not have been meaningfully updated in probably 10 or 15 years. Very glad I'm only here for about 12 hours.

Comfortable but needs a facelift / modernisation

The hotel is easy to find and has a free car park (be careful though as we inadvertently parked in the neighbouring hotels car park and didn't realise until the next morning - luckily we didn't get towed). The hotel is a little tired and could do with a facelift / modernisation. The staff are great and tried to sort any issues we had straight away - for example we wanted ice to cool our drinks down but the ice machine was out of service, they had cold drinks available. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable ensuring we were able to get a good nights rest.

Looks dated but is good salute and comfortable

No lift but only 2 floors. An older motel and needs an update but actually room was good size comfortable and well equipped free coffee in lobby with some breakfast snacks as well. Staff friendly good price we stayed to meet family member off plane. It's actually a good lace to stay if you want a comfortable room

pleasant stay

Smithers Sandman Inn hotel was a nice play to stay at. We felt really welcome here, the staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and clean. The room has free Wifi, fridge, microwave, tv, airo, sitting area with table and chairs and parking in front of the hotel (free as wel). The hotel does not serve breakfast but they do provide small snacks (fruit, yoghurt, drinks, muffins etc) and they serve good coffee as well. Outside of the hotel you will have a nice view at the mountains, especially beautiful when the sun sets. Smithers itself offers some outdoor activities, like hiking and fishing and in winter time skiing. I would recommend this hotel for a short stay / overnight stay.

Opknapbeurt nodig

Ruhig ist also anders. Zimmer in saumäßigem Zustand. Siehe Bilder. Hier kriegt mich keiner wieder rein.

Smerig

Stejle trapper. Værelset rimelig i str.

Comfy

Rooms are good. Microwave, coffee maker, bar fridge in rooms, which is great for leftovers, snack or perishable souvenirs. Beds & pillows soft and comfortable. Right beside a Tim Hortons (Canadian coffee shop) and close to small downtown. Everywhere is walk-bale. Would recommend to others & friends

Hockey Provincials

We stayed here while at the Bantam Hockey Provincials in Smithers. Steve and his staff went above and beyond for us while we stayed there. He let us use the meeting room to eat in and keep all of the food, he even moved a refrigerator in for us to use while we were there. The hotel was very clean, quiet and the staff was very friendly, which along with great sport rates made our stay so enjoyable and will be my go to hotel from now on in Smithers.

Last minute workshop

clean, quiet, cozy... simply put. I had a last minute workshop to attend, and had arrived late in the evening, the service was good but the bed was small, I am 6'2 " so normally I don't have an issue with most hotels but the space was cramped and the bed was small. there is no elevator, Tim Hortons across the Small parking area was maybe the highlight of the stay (I'm Canadian). other than that the room served its purpose, just not as comfortably as I expected.

Over charged on a busy weekend

My wife and I were in Smithers for the fall fair in late August. We had booked directly with a local motel called the Aspen Inn. For whatever reason they lost our reservation and apologized profusely about the mistake. We stayed there one night and they promised to find us a room somewhere as they too were over booked. The Sandman Inn had a room and told us we could not check in until after 4pm that day. When we arrived (at 4:30) they had someone there trying to rent our room and said they were about to give it away so it was a good thing that we showed up right then. The front desk gentleman then asked me if the Aspen had explained what the charge was for the night which I said no but I assumed it was the normal rate. He chucked and said the room was a small queen and it would cost $185.00 plus tax and that there were no other rooms available in town. (We had paid 140.00 for a nicer room the night before at the Aspen). We paid, as we had no choice and went to find a the smallest queen bed and room I have ever seen in North America. They where quite simply gouging us poor souls because they knew when were stuck. I will never stay there again. The Aspen was told what happened and said they would comp a room for us next time we are in Smithers BC. The Smithers Chamber of Commerce should know what is going on during the fall fair and ask businesses to try to refrain from overcharging. It looks bad on the whole town to be honest.

freundlich, sauber, gute Lage.

" Herz, was willst du mehr ".

Older Sandman stopover

The hotel is adjacent to Highway 16 but at that point it was not too intrusive and handy for access to downtown. Smithers main centre was small, easily walkable and pleasant. Stairs up to front entrance and then we were told that there was no lift to our first floor room. Reception was slow. The room had all the usual Sandman equipment but compared to others is in need of refurbshment. The original set up probably does not have enough power outlets as extension leads were being used. I could not get the air conditioning to work in the evening then found next day that it was plugged into a socket behind the bed via an extension lead and this had come loose. Adequate but overall I felt it had a tired and rather shabby feel.

2014-08-29 00:04:40

Pet room

Older hotel, pet room is quite small but offers everything you need. It has a fridge and microwave which is helpful. And, the bonus is that it is only steps from the Tim Hortons, they share a parking lot. Check in was very smooth the employee working, Patricia (I think that's her name) was very nice and helpful. There is not anywhere really right beside the hotel to walk the dog but there are some grassy patch areas. She was helpful by showing me where some trails are that I could walk my dog and generally very nice. Small town, so hotels are limited, this one is perfectly fine if you need to stay somewhere on your travels. Clean and offers everything you need.

2014-08-22 11:17:36

Good stopover

The location is nothing to write home about, but the rooms are comfortable and we had a very warm welcome. Staff were helpful in recommending places to eat - but i nal honesty, there is not a lot in Smithers. In short, fine for a night, but probably not for a longer stay - unless one is skiing in the winter.

2014-08-09 18:07:13

good stoppover

Stayed one night on 3 week tour. hotel deceptive, clean place but typical motel portrayed in America / english films. however shower was great, plenty of hot water lacking in in room service, coffee (staff forgot to top up), noisey air con but brill restaurant, smithers was an experience.

2014-07-22 13:57:34

Very friendly and helpful front desk

The power was out when we arrived but that did not stop us from being able to check in. The front desk was very friendly and provided rags to clean our motorcycles. This hotel provided good value for our stay.

2014-07-20 23:38:34

Older hotel but rooms were clean and service was friendly

This place needs a coat of paint but its OK and economical. The rooms and bathroom are a little small but everything is functional. The Tazzy at the front desk was pleasant and theres a Tim Hortons not more than 40 feet from the front door which was convenient.

2014-03-16 19:55:21

Clean, friendly staff and a great rate / value for your dollar

Called in at the last minute to get a room and was provided with friendly service. The room was about $20 cheaper than similar properties in Smithers and was very clean. Had a working microwave and small fridge. The TV worked just fine. There is wireless internet on all floors that worked perfectly. Basically a perfect visit.

2014-03-04 19:15:37

Small room

I had a very small, 1 double bed room at the top of the stairs, so it was noisy with people coming, going and talking in the hall. There's a Tim Horton's right next to the Inn, so that was convenient for food, but could be noisy if you have a room on that side. There is no elevator, so be prepared to bring your luggage up and down the stairs. Everything else was standard: fridge, desk, coffee maker, etc.

2014-01-19 20:10:25

Average

We stayed at the Sandman with our senior boys basketball team. We had many rooms. The boys were able to be a little loud with no complaints so that was good. The rooms are older with brick walls but they are clean. The staff was good. We had no complaints about our stay. The price of room is low.

2014-01-16 21:21:27

Friendly, clean and enjoyable

There are hotels that advertise " pet friendly, " but are barely pet tolerant. The Smithers Sandman, however, is exactly what a you'd expect a small town hotel to be: friendly, clean and cozy. Nothig fancy about the room, perhaps a little small given the size of the furniture, but it was bright, clean and included a fridge & microwave. The owner, Judy was pleasant and polite. I was travelling with my dog and was given a room just as nice as any…unlike other hotels that stick you in dirty, dark corners of the hotel. My room was on the 2nd floor, always a treat when travelling alone, and it was perfect for the night. The Tim Hortons next door was convenient but I'm glad to have a room on the other side…I highly recommend this hotel, it's just what a weary traveller is hoping to find.

2013-11-01 15:18:51

2013-10-29 18:46:03

Outdated but clean

Upon arrival staff was confused and quickly became anxious about accommodating our 38foot truck which requires being plugged in. A space was found and no one was unkind about it. The rooms were quite old and a bit worn but everything had been scrubbed and nothing appeared unclean. Unfortunately our windows faced out to the Tim Hortons next door and lights from cars through the drive through were a problem for most of the night. The evening attendant at the front desk refused to offer and help finding somewhere to eat because he " didn't know " the restaurants in town.

2013-09-29 10:19:35

Very small, but clean

I should have read the reviews. I am travelling with my mom. She walks with a cane, and cannot do stairs. The very steep stairs coming into the hotel (no ramp) were very difficult for her. No elevator, however when the staff saw my mom's cane, they quickly got her onto the main floor. The rooms have been updated to the latest Sandman colours and quality, however be warned, they are very very small. Staff were good, it is clean, but yes the Tim Horton's can be quite loud...

Clean, Friendly and Easy!

My Mom and I stayed at the Sandman inn in Smithers last week as we were in town for a family wedding. My Mom researched a little and read reviews for several hotels in Smithers and she decided we should try the Sandman because of the decent reviews of service, value and cleanliness. Her research paid off and we very much enjoyed our stay at the Sandman! The owners were visible and present most of the times we went by the reception desk, with smiles and helpful service. They were excellent and easy in our arrangements to have a third-party pay for us and the cleaning staff were friendly and did a great job. The room we had on the first floor was clean, very spacious and bright with two Queen beds (or Doubles, I can't quite remember), a small fridge, microwave and coffee maker, flat-screen TV and alarm clock. The bathroom was a decent size and very clean and comfortable. Small touches like having a large rounded shower curtain rod and nice clean chest of drawers added to our approval. The beds were very comfortable, not too hard or soft, with lovely pillows and a great fan / air conditioner unit, so we slept very well. There is a conveniently located Tim Hortons right beside the front door and a fitness and business room on the hotel's lower level that I did not need this trip. The only small drawbacks for us was the fact that to even enter the front door you must walk up about 10 steps. We usually request a ground-level room in any hotel that does not have an elevator because of my mother's bad knees, but even with a " ground-floor " room at this Sandman we still had to climb every time we came and went. The hotel offered free " hi-speed " Wi-Fi internet access in your room, for which I was very grateful since I had to do a bit of work while on vacation this trip. However, the wi-fi speed was quite slow and took me much longer than usual to do simple tasks. There is no attached restaurant to the Sandman, but as mentioned previously, there is a Tim Hortons next door and several other excellent restaurants and lots of great small shopping within blocks, walking or driving. All in all, the Sandman is a pleasant, decently-priced, clean hotel that I would recommend to anyone and would stay at again if needed. Smithers is a gorgeous little town right under the mountains and with great businesses like this Sandman I hope many more people visit to take in the beauty of it's alpine-like atmosphere. Thanks!

Clean room and Great Staff

The Smithers Inn was great stop on a road trip from Seattle back to Anchorage, Alaska. We encountered a delay getting to Smithers so I called the hotel to let them know we were going to be late. No problem says the gentleman at the desk. We arrive past mid night, the front doors were open, keys were ready and room ready to go. He had been waiting to greet us and make sure we were taken cared of. Now that's BC hospitality. We will stay again. Thank you.

great staff

I've stayed here 3 times since March, 2013, an average of 3 weeks each stay. The managers, Sherry and Robert, as well as the other staff, are terrific. Very friendly and helpful. My first stay was in a single room which I found to be adequate but small for such an extended stay. On my second stay Sherry suggested a suite which was perfect for me. It had a full sized fridge, stove, microwave and sufficient dishes, pots and pans for me to cook for myself, something I really want when I'm on an extended trip like this. The bathroom is small but adequate and the shower head and abundant hot water were great. Having a separate bedroom and living room make it seem more like home. I found the rooms, building and grounds to be very clean. On my first and second trips I stayed on the Tim Horton's side of the building but I didn't notice the noise that others complained about although getting in and out of the parking lot when Tim's is busy can be interesting. That said I have 3 problems- primarily the fact that there is no elevator. Since I'm here for such a long time I come with lots of stuff. My rooms were either up or downstairs requiring that I pack my heavy suitcases up and down or climb stairs every time I leave and return. I have health issues and find this difficult. Second- the internet is terrible. It sometimes times out before a site is opened or just tells you to reload the page. Being used to very fast high-speed at home I find this trying but if you have patience you can usually finish what you started. This was improved somewhat when I left the small laptop at home and brought the larger one with an Ethernet plugin for the cord provided by the motel. Third- no laundry. This is really minor but many of the motels I've stayed in have coin-ops for guests and when I'm here for so long I need to do laundry. Fortunately there is a laundromat near by with a reasonable drop off fee that I've made use of several times. All in all I am happy to recommend this property and will be happy to stay here again if required

Clean, Cozy, Great Service

This is where my family likes to stay on Hockey and Soccer trips. Very nice older Inn with lots of Character. We enjoy the Antique feel of the inn much better than the new 'fancy' Hotels in the area. The rooms are very nice, we get a suit and I have to say we LOVE it! The Lady who checked us in was very friendly and her (I assume) was her husband walked by joking with her. It was very pleasant and enjoyable. It's a bonus that Tim Horton's is also right beside this great little Inn.

Einfaches Durchgangshotel

Einfaches Durchgangshotel.
