Hanging out
We had originally booked for two days, but due to a friend falling ill, we were luckily able to add on two extra days. My grandparents moved to Vesuvius in 55 and I spent all of my summers there. This was a wonderful 4 days of reminiscing. After the initial meet and greet with Dan, we had the place to ourselves and some great sunset viewing from the deck and hot tub. Bed was comfortable, breakfast selection was perfect, huge selection of DVDs and easy walks to the beach and nearby Seaside Inn (fresh halibut). It's quiet, secluded and peaceful. We had a great time trying to anticipate where the harbour seal would surface and watched the crows hassle the resident bald eagle. Thanks for the wonderful stay! Rob and Jo-Anne
Captain spot prawns!
Great visit and accommodations, highlighted by some local spot prawn cocktails left in the refrigerator. They have thoroughly thought of everything and you can't beet the view and hot tub area. Nice to see local wild life and a late night Racoon (he seemed friendly). We will be back ! Cheers, Bob
A million dollar View
I am writing this review on my last night here at the Beachfront Studio. Jacqui and Dan have equipped this lovely place so well. It is perched on a hillside overlooking the ocean across from Crofton. The lights of Crofton sparkle at night. WE have had the most amazing sunsets nightly here. This is a gem!!
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay
Right away we were welcomed and shown around the beautiful property. There's stairs to the beach which is about 30 seconds away from your room if you get tired of lounging in your private hot tub. The view is spectacular and the tiled floors are heated. The queen-sized bed is beyond comfortable and was suprised to find, after a quick trip into town, they quietly came and made the room! Dan and his wife did an impeccable job looking after every small detail to make our stay memorable. They called a few days beforehand to ask if we prefer cream or milk with our coffee and had granola and fruit waiting for us for the morning. The two nights we were there we never saw nor heard either of them. We had complete privacy during our stay. I couldn't tell if there was anyone in the house though Dan did give us every contact number he had if we did need them for anything. I bet they would be there before I hung up the phone. Another one of my favorite features of this B & B is that there is one of the best restaurants on the Island serving mussels and seafood, reasonably priced, which is a five minute walk from the B & B. We went there for lunch and decided to come back for dinner that night it was so good. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to our next visit. Lindsay
Poor value - minimal effort - For Sale sign outside
We decided to book Beachfront at Vesuvius on the strength of their advertising as there were no reviews on Trip Advisor. This was a big mistake. It was one of 5 places we stayed in during our tour of the Rockies and British Columbia. It was without doubt the worst value and the only unwelcoming place we stayed in. It is difficult to know where to start and in fact I have held back writing my review in order to " let the dust settle ". Suffice to say that this review is written on the strength of staying in many hotels, bed and breakfasts, apartments, villas and camping over more years than I care to mention. Beachfront at Vesuvius is advertised as a bed and breakfast. The first thing we noticed as we parked outside was a large For Sale sign (which may have had an impact on the service provided) We were spoken to by one of the owners who stayed with us about 10 minutes going through the necessary information about the suite, tv, hot tub etc. This was the only time we saw anyone during the whole of our 4 night stay. No follow up to enquire if everything was ok, no advice on where to visit etc. The only evidence of the presence of anyone at the property (the apartment is on a basement level beneath a detached house) was some replenishing of supplies in the mini kitchen area and some minimal cleaning. The advertising describes their Romance Suite as being designed for couples in love or as a solo retreat for artists and writers. Perhaps they assume that no presence at all in a bed and breakfast re-affirms the " Romance ".. but no contact - not even very discreet is not acceptable in a bed and breakfast. Frankly this is the first time we have ever experienced such a poor minimal effort in a bed and breakfast. If it was advertised as a self catering apartment, maybe yes but then the mini kitchen area would have to be much better kitted out. The advertising refers to views and yes if you go outside and walk over to the side of the seating area to the left of the apartment there is a lovely view of Vesuvius Beach. Unfortunately if you look out from the front windows of the apartment from where the hot tub is you have a wonderful view, across the sea, of the paper mill at Crofton. When everything locally was quiet at night I could hear the mill at work. Beachfront at Vesuvius is a bed and breakfast providing continental breakfasts. Having travelled in many countries this is the first time I've ever experienced a continental breakfast without any bread or pastries. It was ok for those on a diet of fruit juice, cereal or yoghurt. Frankly breakfasts were a very poor show. When we ran out of milk we bought our own only to discover a carton was supplied in our absence. We ended up buying our own bread, meat and jam.. which is what I understand a continental breakfast to consist of as well as the usual cereals etc. The decor is somewhat astonishing. The advertising refers to a Caribbean theme. In fact it is African safari, complete with elephants, spears, a very large plastic plant, leopard patterned bed linen and throw. The decor is neither romantic or appropriate for a beachside rental.. more what I would expect in a bordello if I was that way inclined. The apartment states " adult themed " - this can be read many ways from not suitable for children to the opposite end of the spectrum. We have stayed in " romantic " suites on a large number of times and have never been disappointed. None of them have been remotely tacky or inappropriate. Is Beachfront good value? Well we took advantage of a mid week discount and a very pleasant " Romance " special of champagne and chocolate. Without these the apartment would have been the most expensive place we stayed in during our 24 day stay in Canada. Their charges of 250$ or £188 a night are also, significantly, at the top end of comparable other bed and breakfasts on Salt Spring that have excellent reviews on service, breakfasts and value. We both felt that it was poor value compared to everywhere else we stayed. Their comment book had a number of satisfied comments from people who clearly either felt they had better service than us or had lower expectations. However they were very sparse for the last 3 years which suggests either that the apartment is vacant most of the year (ranging between several months or weeks between comments and some consecutive) or that like us people declined to comment. (I should point out that the comment books in the other places we stayed in were packed with complimentary comments for just the last year) What can I say that is positive? Well the apartment was spotless and an obvious attempt had been taken to create something pleasant despite the overall theme being so dreadful. The hot tub was excellent, a large tv was provided along with a dvd and films. It was literally a short few minutes walk to an excellent restaurant and there were steps from the outside down to the beach. Some of the views were beautiful. Most of all it was situated on Salt Spring Island which is really beautiful. Would I go to Beachfront again - definitely no. Would I recommend it - not to anyone I know - of any age! A change of approach to service and décor etc would greatly improve the apartment as it has enormous potential. Would I visit Salt Spring again - definitely yes.
