About Northland Lodge
This historic lodge was built and designed in 1928 by Louis Hill of the Great Northern Railway, the famous builder of The Prince of Wales Hotel along with many of the lodges built in Glacier National Park. Our hillside hideaway is located in the quiet part of Waterton nestled against the mountain and is a 5 minute walk to anywhere in town. Open your window and listen to the sound of the waterfalls all night or hang out on the large deck and watch the deer come off the mountain. And while it was undoubtedly the largest home in the park in 1928, it is small by today's standards. What we lack in size we make up for in hospitality. In the mornings we offer coffee, tea, juice and hot muffins with our famous Saskatoon Berry jam. A sit and sip to visit with other guests and learn about all the adventures available to you in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Wonderful accommodation!
Loved our stay in this lovely historic home. Jeanne was so welcoming and warm and the homemade muffins and Saskatoon pie were delicious. Quiet location and could here the waterfall from our bedroom window, quite lovely. Very pleasant experience. Enjoyed our stay here and in Waterton very much. Highly recommend staying here!
A great B and B
This is a great B & B. Our room was comfortable and our host was exceptional. She made us feel welcome from the minute we walked in. We had fresh baked muffins every morning and their yummy Saskatoon pie twice! It is conveniently located close to town but not right in the middle of town making it quiet and relaxing. It is inside Waterton National Park making it easy to visit different places in the park.
Fabulous Trip Location - as long as you understand what this place is!
We really enjoyed our experience at the Northland lodge. This is certainly only a place to stay at if you know what you are getting into however - You get a smaller room, with only the basics in there, and the place is pretty much a hostel where privacy is really never to be expected. However, if you are going to Waterton with the idea of going out and about and never really sticking around, this place is perfect! If you love chatting to strangers about their plans for the day while enjoying great warm homemade muffins, this is your place! Regardless, me and my partner loved our stay here. It was cozy, close to the Falls in town, and for us, we just walked to the townsite for food and whatnot, and left the car in their back lot! We enjoyed the upper deck for reading, the front chairs for reading, the stars were amazing to see at night, and the table in our room got used for plenty of cribbage! Despite being a bit more on the " Non-private " side, we had our own shower and bathroom, and it was mostly quiet when we were in our room. The blinds are great, and honestly when in our room it was perfect for a couple on an anniversary trip as we were. Thanks for having us, we have recommended you to our friends and family! :)
Home away from home
I have stayed at Northland Lodge numerous times over the course of several years. I keep going back for the location, the comfort, quiet and Stacey's warm welcome. The lodge isn't fancy and it isn't modern; it is cozy, relaxing and friendly.
A Super Pleasant Stay In Waterton Lakes National Park
Very nice location (only steps away from waterfall and from a few easy hiking trails), very nice atmosphere. The lodge is an older building, but nicely kept and updated, intimate enough so that you can have conversations with other guests, if you wish to, when having the morning coffee in the common area.
Gem of a Bed and Breakfast Lodge
This is a lovely old-style B & B where breakfast in a communal or private setting is served by the friendly hostess Stacy. The rooms are small but quaint and though we were here in the heat of the summer, the mountain air wafting through the windows keeps it comfortably cool. The decor is in keeping with the history of this almost 100 year old building. Tables on the patio let you sit outside your room. While old, it's well-maintained and clean. Love the flower baskets too!
Really cute enchanting stay! We'll be back!
Really wonderful time at the Northland Lodge! This historic building is so cute and a magical little place to stay in one of the prettiest spots on the planet. We WILL be back! (Also really really good coffee in the morning - and I'm a coffee snob)
Cozy, clean, and charming
We spent four nights at Northland Lodge. The first two nights upstairs in Room 2 which has three beds ans was very spacious for the two of us. Because it was extremely hot during our visit we were happy to find a window air conditioner to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. For nights three and four we were asked to move downstairs to Room 6 adjacent to the dining room. Large windows we could open at night and a small fan kept us cool. Both rooms were spotlessly clean and decorated with old fashioned bedding and accessories. Very comfortable beds! Coffee and fresh muffins every morning for guests was a nice touch. Location is on the edge of town close to Cameron Falls and an easy walk to the beach and local restaurants. Friendly manager if you need anything. Floors a little creaky and walls a bit thin but it's an old building so to be expected. Overall we loved our stay and would wholeheartedly recommend this property.
A more traditional property in a Nice Location
Nice Location in Waterton Lakes with very pleasant hosts. The property is older and our room was very small and dark with no air conditioning. There was a very noisy fan. There was a shared wrap around deck which was nice. The parking was good. Our hosts provided coffee and warm muffins in the morning in a shared dining room.
A Wonderful Quiet Place
What a great place for a nice getaway. We spent 4 days there last week to visit Waterton, and it was just wonderful. We were blessed with being in Room # 2, and it was such a nice room. I'm told the largest in the Lodge, and a great view. This is a nice quiet place for a few days, and the people are the nicest, and wonderful muffins in the morning. If you are looking for a Hilton experience, this ain't the place. But if you want a nice quiet getaway in an incredibly beautiful location, well this is indeed the place you want. You will absolutely love it, I know we did. We hope to get back again some day. Oh yea, and Waterton Park is remarkable. What an incredibly beautiful place. I have attached a few photos of the lodge, 2 of the front, 1 of the back parking area (and my beautiful red car) and one that I took out the front of our room. I'll give the Northland Lodge 10 stars out of a possible 5.
Cozy accommodation
Warm care from the owner and hot muffins every morning for the breakfast 😀. Excellent location and quite place in Waterton. We could borrow the bear spray for our first hike in Canada before we bought our own. This is not a big industrial hotel, but pleasant house with several rooms only.
Great location!
Great location! Better to view this as a B & B than a " hotel ". It feels like staying in grandma's spare bedroom. Stacy was a pleasant and helpful hostess. Her morning muffins and coffee were delicious and appreciated. You can either enjoy them in the living / dining room while meeting other guests, or carry them on a tray to your own room.
Fabulous Jeanne and the magic muffins!
Nostalgic facility, with a fabulous host named Jeanne! She made everyone feel at home and made some fabulous muffins to boot. It's not a modern facility, but it has all the basics covered. It's the experience Jeanne provides that makes it fabulous! Well done!
A home away from home
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Northland Lodge. The rooms are cosy and quiet and Stacy's warm hospitality makes everyone feel at home. After a long hike, it is lovely to come back to a B & B that has character and warmth, rather than a sterile hotel room. The simple breakfast is tasty and almost always accompanied by good conversation with like-minded guests.
Friendly and welcoming
Great base to explore Waterton Lakes Park, just steps from the trailheads of two different trails and easy walking distance into town for evening meals. As everyone says, the muffins are excellent! But also worth emphasizing the friendly and welcoming hosts and the great stock of games / books / movies in the common room.
Northland Lodge is a special place. You will fall in love with it just like we did
This was one of the most pleasant stays we have ever experienced, and that is coming from experienced world travelers. Waterton, and Northland Lodge particularly are special places. I could go on about the beauty of the lake and mountains. The best. But it was Jeanne, who manages everything, the people of this small town, and our fellow guests that made this so special to us. Warm muffins (really, really good muffins!) and hot coffee were waiting for us each morning along with the chance to enjoy them with friends we made. Jeanne and the locals had plenty of stories and advice, but she was just as interested in our stories. And whether it was sitting in the red Adirondack chairs enjoying a freshly made doughnut, or looking up at the stars from the upper deck, we could feel the cares of the world just melt away. The room we had was very comfortable, but not luxurious. The bed was good and the water was hot, and Jeanne was quick to respond to questions and little requests we made. In summary, this is not a party palace. But if you are looking for beauty, peace, fun, and want to make some new friends, you will find these at Northland Lodge.
Fantastic Find a bit Off the Beaten Track
The experience was pure excellence from a bit of an early check in until checking out. The hostess, Jeannie, was very informative about all things Waterton, history, drives, hikes, restaurants etc. The Northland Lodge itself has an interesting history and you can find much information on their website. The morning coffee is better than any of the coffee houses downtown and her muffins are to die for. The establishment is in a nice quiet neighborhood and the bed was comfortable. We hope to visit again and stay longer!
A LAID BACK VENUE
Located near Cameron Falls, it is a charming place. There is parking out back [follow the instructions from the sign out front]. I had the 'Dutch Boy Blue' room on the second floor. There were two entrances with two different keys. The room is cozy in size. The toilet, sink and shower are all separate. There is a small fridge. There is no desk and chair but you can use the main floor sitting room. The Cape Cod chairs outside are also inviting. A microwave was available on the main floor. There is no housekeeping unless requested. You can have breakfast from 0730 with java and 0800 with muffins, a chance to mingle with the other residents [there are just nine rooms]. My personal favourite were the maple syrup muffins. The lodge is in the southwestern sector of the town, certainly within walking distance of restaurants. If you need more space in a room, more items like a desk and chair plus coffee / tea facilities in the room this lodge is not for you. If you can do without for a few days you will find a place with character run by down to earth Stacey.
Enjoyed our stay immensely
My friend and I stayed three nights in September, the first night being in the Bear's Den. We enjoyed this room the most, even though it doesn't have a view, because it had plenty of room, a full fridge and a separate bathroom, sink included in the bathroom. I found the beds exceptionally comfortable, and all linens were fresh from hanging outside on the line. The breakfast room was cozy, nicely set out, great coffee and muffins. We met some lovely people as well. And let's not forget our hostess, Jean, and friends, who were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this lodge and will plan on staying here on our next visit.
A Great fall getaway
It feels like a quaint & comfortable home away from home here. Actually, it's better than that. Morning coffee & fresh baked muffins without having to do any work. The blueberry jam and blueberry pie are absolutely delicious. Thank you for making our stay memorable, warm and cozy. This is a historic building (1928) with lots of character from a different time period, so if you desire something super modern, this is not it. A nice location within walking distance of the business district & restaurants. The living & dining areas are a nice place to meet other travelers to discuss each others hiking experiences and other travels. You never know who you'll meet. We were visiting after the tourist season and some of the businesses were already closed for the winter. Even the Prince of Wales hotel was closed for the season. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves. it was a very relaxing stay. We will be back.
Great stay in historic lodge within Waterton National park
Great hostess at historic lodge on edge of Waterton Park town - very convenient to restaurants in town but enough out of town to be very quiet. Room was very small but very charming. Great views from the deck. One of the other guests we met had been coming for 25 years. Not one of the big " national park lodges " - had about 8 rooms so was very cozy. Lovely common living room to sit and relax in.
Friendly hospitality
We returned to Northland Lodge for another relaxing vacation in one of the most beautiful parks in Canada. As always, Stacey provided us with warm hospitality, yummy muffins and good recommendations for hiking trails. We look forward to our next visit to Northland Lodge.
Nice place if you get a good room
Service was excellent. Property is charming; location is good. Had we stayed in one of the rooms at the top I would have given a better rating, but since we unfortunately got the basement room (worst room in the hotel) our experience was not what we had hoped.
A Guest looking for place to stay
My Wife and daughter wanted to stay in Waterton. And we were so glad we found the Northland Lodge to stay at. It was Clean, comfy and Cosy. Stacy made the stay very pleasant. And we realy appreciated the Coffee, muffins and jam in the morning, they were a nice touch and very tasty. So glad we had a chance to find and stay here during our stay at Waterton. The Meyer's
Cozy place, delicious muffins!
My husband and I stayed at Northland Lodge for 3 nights. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the lodging is very comfortable and the breakfast muffins are sooooo delicious! We will definitely be back the next time we travel out to Waterton.
Two Nights At Northland Lodge
My wife and I spent two nights here in the Love Birds room the last week of June 2022. The Lodge is old with a lot of character, located on a hill about a 5 minute walk from Cameron Falls. The room is small when compared to a hotel room but certainly adequate for our 2 night stay. Wonderful service provided by the hostess, Jeanne. A nice park to walk in across the street where we saw a fawn laying beside the walkway. An adult deer seen laying in the back yard of a neighbor next door to the Lodge. We had a supper at Red Rock Trattoria which was a fine dinning experience and we had requested a table by the window. Lunch at Thirsty Bear where we shared the best burger I've had in a long time.
June stay 2022
Overall staff were friendly in this family run business. Muffin and tea and coffee were provided in the morning. Location is good, short walk to town. Don't book room 9 if you are sensitive to mold. There is some mold in the bathroom. Staff informed they said they would have it taken care of.
May be the best choice in Waterton village
The property is older with tiny bathrooms and furnished mostly with assorted vintage items, but gets top marks for being clean, quiet and comfortable. Just a few blocks / 5 minute walk from " downtown " Waterton and the waterfront. The price is more reasonable than most decent properties within the village. We would have appreciated a more substantial breakfast prior to a day hiking in the park. While we enjoyed the muffins, jam and coffee, it would have been nice to have some other simple additions such as hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, and oatmeal (we brought some of our own, which we heated in the microwave in our room).
Awesome stay
Our host Jeanne was fantastic. Great stories in the AM over her fresh baked muffins and coffee. Deer and Big Horn sheep roaming the property and the park across the street. 100 meters from falls. Easy walk into town. Rustic rooms. Definitely like to visit again.
Retreat Bliss
Having the entire lodge for my Mindful Photography Retreat exceeded all expectations. Our group of 11 received warm, friendly, welcoming, genuine care from our delightful hosts Jeanne and Valerie. The home made meals were delicious and the rooms so comfortable. Wouldn't hesitate to book another group here again.
We were very welcome here
Jeannie made us feel right at home at the Northland. She was happy to accomodate my scent allergy, makes wonderful muffins, and gave us great information about what to see in the area. We look forward to visiting again. The location is quiet but close enough to town to walk in for dinner. It is also very close to the trailhead for Bertha Falls.
Northland Beauty
Great location. Historic ambience. Family run pride of service on display from checkin to checkout. Great muffins in the morning with Saskatoon berry jam coffee and juice. Outdoor on the line dried sheets for your bed. No tv's to reinforce why you came to Waterton. What more can anyone ask for?
Awesome place to stay and explore
What a great place, with tones of history of the area and the lodge itself. The Owner is fantastic. Great place to relax and enjoy all that waterton has to offer. Awesome saskatoon jam and syrup to go with baked goodies!!
Getaway Waterton Ab
Highlly recommend this homy, quaint super clean lodge. The bed was super comfortable. Great views, convenient location, and great people, very friendly, helpful staff. We had a great stay. We will be back for sure.
friendly
Stacey is very helpful. Went the last week she was open in September as winter was closing in and loved the warmth of the fire in the evening and warm muffins in the morning. Liked meeting other travelers too.
Great location, friendly people. cozy decor
I stayed at this lodge 40 years ago and had fond memories of the cozy ambiance and friendly people. This visit was equally enjoyable. The room was well appointed. with some antiques and some modern decor, the fireplace in the main area provided a lovely sitting area and everything was spotless. The Saskatoon berry pie and the morning muffins were superb. Views of the mountains are fabulous and it is very quiet as it is not on a main road.
Very cozy motel
We loved our stay at Northlands! It was very cozy, we felt right at home. Muffins and coffee in the morning were perfect. Our room was very warm and spacious. I really enjoyed the historical nature of the motel, with the antique furniture and decor it was so unique. Would definitely stay here again.
Beauty of a Spot
Had a lovely Stay at the Northland Lodge. It was very peaceful and I was able to catch up on a little bit of the towns History with the owner. It was a Great feel at home setting and I loved sitting around the fire conversing about all the things to do in Waterton!
Warm and hospitable.... like home but with some special touches!
Jeanne was so hospitable and made us feel so welcome. We had originally booked a smaller room, but because of a last minute cancellation, Jeanne offered us the larger room without charging us anymore. The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the centre of the village. It is quiet and peaceful tucked away from traffic and activity. Parking is close to the hotel and so not an issue. Jeanne had lots of info about Waterton Lake Park, which was most helpful and was always available to chat!
Relaxing and comfortable
Slight mix up with rooms initially, but the hostess Stacy went out of her way to make us comfortable. Relaxed home form home atmosphere makes it very easy to make new friends. Sitting round fire at night after a very wet day, chatting with other guests, helped make this enjoyable stay no matter the weather.
Relaxing get away
We loved our stay, the staff are so friendly. The location is fantastic, the homemade muffins for breakfast were so good and the rooms are quite comfortable. It was nice having a small fridge. We even had supper on the balcony one evening and it was so peaceful and relaxing! Highly recommend this place to everyone!
Quaint and comfortable
Jeanne makes everyone feel like family. While visiting with extended family, the teen kids asked if they could set up a tent in her yard. At first, she didn't realized they were part of our group, but still allowed them to stay in her yard and offered them a bathroom and breakfast. Kind and welcoming to all. Lodge has a great patio to enjoy the view and relax.
Warm and inviting
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the friendly hospitality of hostess Jeanne. The room was quaint, quiet and comfortable. Cllose to all amenities. Delicious hot muffins and coffee each morning! Lovely view!
Great Stay at Northland Lodge
This wonderful lodge is full of cheer. Over the years that we have been coming here we have come to know the owner and staff and it is like coming home to family and friends. It a a short walk to Cameron Falls and downtown. You can open your window and hear the peaceful sound of the falls. The huge deck is a great place to put your feet up after a busy of exploring Waterton Lakes National Park. This lodge is number one in accommodation for us always. Check it out!! Time Capsule Wedding Anniversary
Our adult children decided to give Mom and Dad a special anniversary gift and treated us to two nights in the same lodge and same room we used on our honeymoon 64 years ago. I use the word time capsule as it is almost exactly as it was when we came the first time. Of course, it has been appropriately updated and modernized yet in such a way as to preserve the quaintness and feel of its historic past. Jeanne our hostess went way beyond " a friendly atmosphere " as she treated us like royalty, making our visit forever memorable. We loved our first stay there and on our second visit we basked in the warm memories of our happy 64 years together which all started here. If you want a stay to remember and not just a room we recommend this unique Northland Lodge in its wonderful setting.
Quaint gem
This was the perfect place to unwind after day hikes. Can't beat the location just down the road from Cameron Falls, but without all the hustle and bustle of being in the middle of town. And, the Saskatoon berry pie was delicious!
Highly Recommend!
My boyfriend and I booked very last minute with Jeanne at Northland Lodge, and everything was perfect! We had a cute comfortable room in the basement of the lodge, and the breakfast the following morning was awesome! (Jeanne's muffins and Saskatoon jam are amazing!) Thanks Jeanne for a perfect stay!
Great Place and Hospitality
We had a great short stay at Northland Lodge, the room was very clean and cozy. Jean is so awesome, she was very accommodating to us and our kids. You can hear the falls from the lodge and it's just a short walk to downtown. Thank you Northland Lodge we will be back.
A charming getaway
We stayed here on the recommendation of a friend, and now I hope to pay the favour forward to others! This historic lodge is an easy walk into town and just steps from Cameron Falls. Our lovely room (Garden Room) was spotless and, to our surprise, accommodated the four of us (including one teen and one 22yo) just fine. It looked out over Evergreen Avenue and across to Vimy Peak. Being at the end of the large wraparound deck, it felt like we had our own space, with a little table for eating and playing crib and two other chairs to sit and watch the world go by _ or watch the deer and her fawns enjoy their evening meal. As someone else has said, the in-room fridge is a great addition (there was also a microwave). We stayed during a hot spell, and the room got quite hot with no a / c. But the ceiling fan helped, and the evenings do cool down nicely. The morning muffins are delicious _ served still warm from the kitchen _ and the staff are lovely. Highly recommend!
Perfect place for a quiet stay in Waterton
The Northlands is charming, comfortable, well-located, and the staff are all lovely. What more could you ask for! The lodge is at the very top of town, meaning it's quietly tucked away from the hubbub but only a 10 minute walk to restaurants and the lakeshore. It's also close to the trailhead for the Bertha Lake hike, which was convenient. We stayed in the Joanie room which was a nice size and a cheery pink colour. It's on the second floor and has a large patio surrounding it. The north patio is a shared space for all guests, but the east side is more private, perfect for sitting out with an evening drink or reading a book. The mini fridge and microwave in the room came in handy. We only did takeout (given the covid-19 situation) and it was nice to be able to store leftovers. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and though it was hot, the ceiling fan and floor fan helped to cool us down. The shower is small (it is a very old building), but the water pressure was fantastic! In the morning there was coffee, tea, juice, and homemade muffins that could be eaten in the common living area or taken on a tray to your room. Every guest I saw, myself included, took a tray outside which helped ensure social distancing. Every aspect of the Northlands Lodge was enjoyable, I'd stay again here in a heartbeat.
Amazing, super cozy and very accommodating
We booked a room last minute; the manager Mariah was super helpful and made us feel right at home as soon as we arrived. She is very knowledgeable of the area and made great suggestions for the must sees around town. Will definitely be returning again!
Hidden Gem off the beaten path
Northland lodge was an excellent lodging for my family. Just off the beaten path, but close to restaurants and hiking. We slept great and really enjoyed sitting outside at the end of the day. Thanks for hosting us!
Great place to stay in a beautiful part of Alberta!
This home was built by the same builder of the Prince of Wales hotel in Waterton. It has a lot of character and charm. The wrap around balcony and outside access doors makes it ideal for maintaining physical distance between clients. Our room was very clean and although cosy, had a separate toilet room, shower, bathroom sink and mini fridge. Wonderful home-made muffins and coffee were provided each morning. The balcony and front yard have extra seating and small tables, which make it so nice to be able to relax and enjoy time there between seeing the sights and doing some of the many outdoor activities in the area.
Awesome Stay!
Loved our short stay at Northland Lodge. Jeanne, Betty, and Darla made us feel right at home. Morning muffins were great, and we preferred this quiet location, backing onto the mountain near Cameron Falls, compared to our friend's hotel right in town. Brought our muffins and coffee / tea out to the upper deck each morning to take in the mountain views. Will definitely be back!
A Rocky Mountain Home
My room looked out towards the mountain side where the deer were gambling. And not just the deer, the flora and fauna were a sight to see! The comfortable beds had cotton sheets, mountain air dried and mangled (reason enough to stay here) ! I hope Jeanne is there for you, because she really helped us navigate some great trails and businesses in this delightful park. Also, for her morning, freshly- made muffins. It rained one night when we were there, so we hung out inside with a roaring fire. A great little hotel - spotless clean and ever so charming. Definitely coming back!
Tranquility at Northland Lodge
The Northland Lodge was a wonderful place to stay. It has that romantic rustic feeling that really gives the place a timeless quality. The amenities were great and were treated to fresh bran or rhubarb muffins for breakfast.
Going home
I'm not sure what it was? The moment my sister and I got to the lodge, it felt like we were finally home. Jeanne, the manager was incredible. She took us in and gave us tips on places to explore and let our hair down. We brought our sewing machines and were working on a couple quilting projects. Jeanne set us up and joined in the fun. Let me tell you, if you go to Waterton, be sure to stay at Northland Lodge💐
Holiday
Beautiful spot, small but cosy room, friendly and caring hostess! The hostes coocked a special breakfast for us, which we enjoyed in the 'Family room' together with other guests in a family atmosphere... Mijno van Dijk.
Great Stay for our Anniversary
We arrived on August 15, 2019 for our anniversary. The check in was very low key. Stacey gave us our room key, showed us to our room and informed us of breakfast, common areas, and other points of interest. We stayed in room # 3 called the Danish Treehouse. It was just as advertised - small room, with a double bed and small desk. The bathroom is a converted closet with a sink and toilet. We had access to a shower downstairs. We mainly stayed at the home to sleep and for breakfast, as we had other activities planned in Waterton. There were about 10 guests already sitting down for breakfast in the living room when we came down around 8:00am. We took a tray upstairs on the wrap around deck with a beautiful view of Vimy and enjoyed some muffins, jam, orange and apple juice, plus our complimentary slice of pie and ice cream they offered for our anniversary. Cameron Falls is just steps away. Would recommend for someone wanted to try a unique, cozy bed and breakfast experience directly in the Town. Very pleasant stay.
100% satisfaction!
Never having been to Waterton, much less Northland Lodge, I was nervous. Northland Lodge turned out to be the " perfect spot! ". The mgr Stacy, immediately makes you feel like family... (seriously) The lodge is near downtown but not near the chaos & typical congestion... Its like living at home! One could socialize in the morning over free coffee, juice & muffins or withdraw to the deck or yard and enjoy them lounging in the sun while deer sashay thru the yard (not kidding). Nights on the balcony were cool and quiet... stars by the thousands and a waterfall nearby (Cameron Falls?) could be heard in the distance. If you want a hotel room with families, screaming kids & loud mouths running the halls, stay in town.... if not.... check out Northland Lodge.
Quiet & clean, but small & uncomfortable
We stayed a the Northland Lodge the night of July 1 2016. The first thing we need to point out is that this is NOT a " lodge " - this is a bed and breakfast. Not that this is a bad thing, it's just to clarify for people that may have been confused by the name. It's very easy to find - if you drive past Cameron Falls, you'll see a sign on your right saying " Northland Lodge " and see stairs going up. Just take the next right onto a small dirt road and take an immediate right. After a few houses you'll see the small parking lot at the back of the property, which has a large sign saying " Northland Lodge " on the building itself. Find a spot and walk around to the front of the building, the main door should be open, and there's a bell there to ring if no one is around. Note - as of July 2016, the check in times were from 3-6 PM, so be sure to check this when you book, and make arrangements if you'll be checking in outside of the check in times. As we walked in, we heard people talking, and rang the bell. We were approached by the manager Stacy, who said hello and let us know she'd be right with us as she was checking in another couple. We had a seat on the couch, and after a couple minutes Stacy came back in and checked us in. We asked if she had a staff or if she was alone, and she said she did have others helping her. We don't doubt this, however we never saw anyone else working there during our stay (more on this later). Stacy showed us to our room and explained that she makes coffee and muffins and serves them around 8 AM (this B & B offers a continental breakfast with coffee & muffins, not a full breakfast). We mentioned we'd have to leave before that as we would be hiking early the next day, and asked if she'd be around. She mentioned she'd be in the kitchen around 6:30 AM preparing for the day (more on that later). We stayed in room # 4 which was upstairs facing the parking lot. The rooms are small. VERY VERY SMALL. We didn't even have a place to put our luggage - things were strewn over the floor and we didn't have much room to move. We were tripping over things and each other constantly. And yes, in our room the shower & toilet were in separate, TINY rooms, and we constantly bumped into the walls which made it awkward since people in the next room could probably hear it. And yes, the sink was in the bedroom - yes, the bedroom. And the sink had separate faucets for hot and cold water. All this was awkward and not functional at all. There wasn't even a small table in the room - we had to put our toiletries on top of the garbage can. Also, there is NO air conditioning - the room had a fan which helped, but it was still a bit hot at night. One thing that did happen dampened our experience here. Around 6:00 PM the night we checked in, we went out the back door onto the deck and down to the parking lot to get something out of our vehicle. When we got back upstairs, the back door was locked even though it was unlocked when we left. As we didn't take our room key, we were locked out. We went around to the front door and entered, looking for Stacy or anyone that could help. There was a note by the main entrance saying Stacy went for dinner and would be back around 7:30 PM. We waited around until 8 PM, unable to find anyone to help us, and finally Stacy returned and let us in our room. Now, we own part of the blame for this situation, as we should have either taken our key with us when we left the room, or made sure that door wouldn't lock behind us. Also, Stacy did leave a phone number where she could be reached, and we failed to see the phone that was in the main entry area. However, we feel that Stacy should have informed us about the door locking behind us if we left. As well, we feel that someone from the B & B should have been present to help us. It was 6 PM on a Friday night, so it's not like we had a problem at 4 in the morning. Everyone deserves a dinner break, but there should have been a staff member around in case of a problem. In the morning, we put our belongings in our vehicle at 6:30 AM, and we went downstairs to find Stacy. Unfortunately, she had not arrived in the kitchen yet (not sure if she stays onsite or somewhere else). Because of our early hike, we were forced to leave the key by the main entry, and we called her a bit later that morning to let her know we checked out. Because we had to leave early that morning, we didn't have the coffee or muffins, which is fine - we can't expect Stacy to make an exception for us and prepare those early. However, we also can't comment on the quality of the breakfast since we didn't have it. So this review does not take the breakfast into account. Overall, we were not satisfied with our experience at Northland Lodge. While the B & B was quiet, clean, and we got a good night's sleep, there were other things that bothered us. The room was way too small for comfort. The fan didn't cool the room enough, even with a window open. There was no one around to help us when we needed it, and we felt abandoned. We feel that for over $200 CAD per night, the level of service and quality of accomodation did not meet our expectations. We understand that this is an old house converted into a B & B, however they have to make it more functional to cater to the needs of their guests.. For those of you that may think we don't know how B & B's work, please check the history of our reviews, as we have stayed at a few B & B's and reviewed them on Trip Advisor. We wish Stacy and the Northland Lodge all the best in the future, however we won't be staying there again during future visits to Waterton.
Quiet and Welcoming
We stayed here for our anniversary at the end of September, which also corresponded with the blood moon. Much of the town was closed, but Northland Lodge provided a warm, quiet, comfortable room. It's an older building with smallish rooms, but the remodeling has been done as well as possible, and the cleanliness is beyond reproach. We slept well, for it's in a quiet part of town, and the bed was comfortable. My wife was hurting from a shoulder injury, but our hostess, Staci, cheerfully reheated her warming compress in the microwave whenever she asked. The muffins and coffee were a good start to each day, but are not represented as a full breakfast. We reserved our room by phone, which was a good choice, because they recommended the best room for us. This was a great accommodation for us, and we hope to return.
6 Nights at Waterton / Northland, Great Decision
Short version: unique location within the town; comfy / homey property and superb host. Detailed version: we just spent 6 nights at the Northland Lodge and loved it. Waterton Lakes NP has " all the beauty but a fraction of the crowds " and we actually ran out of days to do all the hikes and paddles we wanted to. Northland Lodge, in turn, we felt was the best choice because house rentals are not easily available within the town / Park and it's on a quiet residential cul de sac within earshot of Cameron Falls. But you can quickly drive (60-90 seconds) or walk (5-10 min) into the town center. It's also a couple hundred yards from the Bertha / Lakeshore trailhead. We liked being able to spread out between our rooms and the comfy common / living room. The innkeeper was extremely helpful with all sorts of things big and small, saving us time and money on a couple notable occasions. The fresh-baked muffins at 8am were a nice way to start the day and we supplemented with yogurt, cereal and berries from the corner store so as to not have to make a separate breakfast trip before hiking or paddling. Yes, the building is older and has some quirks / idiosyncracies; some are small, some have sink / shower / toilet configurations that are different; some have electrical outlets in interesting places. But again, being able to get to the main streets of town without being in a single room right in the middle of them was great. We were very, very happy with our choice
Great place to stay in Waterton
Stayed here in August 2015 during a road trip between Denver and Vancouver. We loved it. Location is great and the owners are super friendly!! Rooms are very authentic and we had the feeling sleeping over at a friends house. Complimentary breakfast consist of amazing muffins and hot coffee served in the shared living / lounge area. Here you will meet the other guest and can share experiences. We will definitely recommend this to our friends.
Great Location for Exploring Waterton National Park
Nice historic lodge with about a 10 minute walk to Waterton Village. Breakfast was a little less than you would expect at most B & B's consisting of muffins, coffee and tea. The muffins were very good, baked fresh every morning. The staff was excellent, very friendly and helpful. Price was on par with the local area which is geared toward the short tourist season. Everything in Waterton is priced on the high side as is to be expected in a remote location.
Annual Hiking Trip
Our Montana Ladies Hiking group throughly enjoy our time at Northland Lodge. Out host Jenny is fantastic, sharing the history (the gentleman who built the Prince of Wales, built Northland Lodge, the Lodge has always been run by women, etc), also the homemade muffins and coffee she provided was a treat to look forward too. Not to mention the fresh and beautiful eyelet sheets!! Thank You Jenny you are a beautiful person and a gracious host!!
Quiet older B & B, early in the season, just right!
Wanting to get down to Waterton for a few years now, I did so at the beginning of June with one night booking at Northland Lodge. Made a phone reservation & was able to be upgraded. Traveling from Edmonton, over 300 km, wanted more of a personal touch, B & B, a quieter older setting, far end of town and being early in the season, found the price less and fewer tourists! Traveled with my dog, Nanuq, not allowed in the room, slept in my car. But we sat on upper deck outside for abit and then a walk, up to Cameron falls and down to the lake. The B & B within walking distances of the lake and two trail heads, Lots of local wildlife and even a yearling bear cub in back parking lot. Remember if hiking with a dog must be on leash and have a can of bear spray with you. Parking is at rear, and not evident upon first arrival, needing to go around end of the block. Lots of stairs in front. Room # 4 located upstairs in the back, not large but a comfortable double bed with fresh cotton sheets, a small fridge, private bath with shower, not tub, and my favorite blue color. Was rather coolish until figured out the small space heater and had to ask for the wifi pass code. Delightful breakfast of coffee, tea, juice, muffins and jam in an older elegant dining room. Appreciated the late check out as did a hike with my dog, coming back absolutely soaked, showered and changed for trip home. Went through the buffalo paddock on way from park but only saw 2 bison. and then north on Highway 22 Cowboy Trail…very much ranch country with mountains to the west. Cell of rainstorms gave moments of dark threatening skies. At one point saw a double rainbow and just missed a mother duck and 6 ducklings at side of road.
Best Waterton Lakes accommodation
There are few places to stay in Waterton Lakes and we are fortunate that this B & B is one. The staff is welcoming and the rooms are comfortable and very clean. The building has a large wrap-around balcony where it's easy to spend the hours viewing the park. This is the second time we've stayed here and I look forward to future visits.
We'll definitely be back!
This was our first trip to Waterton. The stay at Northland Lodge made our trip complete. The charm and comfort of Northland Lodge was perfect for the beautiful setting of Waterton. We stayed in a lovely upper room, at night we left the windows open so we could hear near by Cameron Falls. We felt we had stepped back 40 yrs. to a by gone era. It was neat to learn the lodge was also built by the person who built the Prince of Wales Hotel. You can see many similar design elements. Within a short walk is Cameron Falls, the town, and the lake. Not to be missed is a walk to the lake at sunset. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful stay.
Relax and recharged
The lodge is located right in the center of all the action. You can do all the outdoor activities (hike, bike, canoeing, riding...) as much as you want or just lounge around and relax. Love the hikes; some of the best in North America. It is right next to two of the trail heads. Cameron waterfall is right in the back yard. You can hear the waterfall from your room! We had coffee and muffins every morning before our daily activities:). I'm addicted to the Saskatoon berry Jam! Can't wait to return!!! 'Got Jam!', Saskatoon berry kind.
Northland Lodge
After reading all the reviews here I am surprised that know one mentioned the Northland Lodge before. For me this is the place to stay in Waterton Lakes. After arriving on a labor day three years ago this was the only place left with a vacant room (probably because it is not on the main route through town). Well, I didn't regret staying at the Northland Lodge, last summer was the third time I stayed in this charmy place. Sure, if you are one of those people where a standard motel room with a satellite tv is more important than charm and hospitality this is not the place for you. The Northland Lodge (build by the same guy who build the Prince of Wales hotel) is more like a Bed and Breakfast. Nine clean rooms with muffins, coffee / tea and juice in the morning and a large living room with fireplace were you can have a relaxing chat with the other guests in the morning or at the end of the day. Located near Cameron Falls (very handy for hiking the Carthew-Alderson or the Bertha Lake trail) the Northland Lodge, build like a Swiss chalet, is not in the main part of town but within easy walking distance in a nice and quiet residential area. Prices are very reasonable, one of the best deals in town.
How to Avoid the Ordinary
After several years of visiting Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, we grew tired of cookie-cutter motel rooms and homogenized tourist hoohah. When we discovered the Northland Lodge it was as if we'd found a secret passage to a land where the people were genuine--and where a few days' stay actually enhanced our experience of these magnificent national parks. We immediately felt at home here, and have returned again and again--since the mid-1980s. The lodge has become an integral part of our yearly vacation as well as the stories we tell afterwards. It's not easy to explain why we love the place as we do: I mean, there aren't 300 cable channels. There's no swimming pool. Perhaps it's that, as Americans, we love that the place has a more European feel. You meet interesting people here, likely because most of the duds end up in the ordinary motels back in town. There's also a real history to this place--Louis Hill, the railroad baron, built it away from the townsite and his Prince of Wales Hotel because, legend has it, he kept his mistress here. And Stacy, the third-generation owner, works hard to maintain her family's tradition of inkeeping excellence. The Northland Lodge isn't for everybody. And that's good. In fact, it's great.
Charming and quiet!
We found Northland Lodge to be such a quiet, quaint, out-of-the way place to stay. We were treated to wonderfully by Stacie, and the views of the mountains were awesome. It was quite relaxing. We were so glad we weren't down in town---too busy, loud, and crowded!!! You'll LOVE the muffins!!!
Tried others in Waterton, now always stay at Northland Lodge
My family has vacationed in Waterton for at least 12 years. While some of the other hotels are very nice, we have stayed at the Northland Lodge for the past six years. It is like staying with friends. We enjoy visiting with Stacy, the innkeeper. Evenings, we often enjoy movies and conversations with the other guests in the living room. Each lovely, clean room is different in this historic building. The sheets smell wonderful because Stacy hangs them to dry outside. The high, spacious deck is perfect for relaxing. A mountain rises up in back of the building. In front is a big city park. When you walk into town, you pass a beautiful waterfall. Or if you drive, getting downtown takes about 5 minutes. Stacy makes great muffins and coffee in the morning.
great place
This is a wonderful place to land after a day hike or tour. The livingroom is very welcoming for reading, sitting by the fire (on cool nights), talking to other guests or watching a movie. The deck has a spectacular view and a nice place to barecue dinner or just relax. The lodge is tucked into the mountainside, near the falls with very charming, comfortable rooms making for a great evening. It's a home away from home.
Dated, Uncomfortable, Stay somewhere else
We picked the Northland lodge because it looked comfortable and had some architetural and historical appeal. We were sorely dissappointed. It was the most uncomfortable 4 nights of lodging we had during our trip around Glacier / Waterton. Lodging around adjacent Glacier National Park can be spartan, and rightly so, you are in the wilderness. Waterton is a town. It is a great destination with easy access to superb scenery and outdoors activity of all types. Waterton can be a welcome slice of civilazation when touring the area. Though surrounded by Wilderness, there are many hotels and restaurants. There are many options. The Northland lodge is a historic home built around the time of the Prince of Wales. At some point in the 1970's or 80's based on the decor, sadly, it appears to have undergone a botched renovation. It is now tired, dated, and dirty. There is wall to wall stained carpeting. Bathrooms in the guest rooms were retrofitted into the original structure. They are poorly planned, cheaply executed, dirty, and tiny to the point of being unusable. Matresses are old and creaky. Bedding is worn and stained. Much is made on their website of the towels and breakfast. The towels, like the bedding, were old with no other distinguishing features. Breakfast was bread and jam. There is no decaf coffee, and the hostess / owner / operator was not interested in getting any for us. Hype of breakfast seemed particularly cruel since the house smelled of bacon each morning which was not for guests. The common areas have a variety of fliers and pamphlets regarding things to do in the area however they are all outdated. The staff needs to go through them, toss out the old and get some new ones in. We called about a guided nature walk. Apparently it hadn't been given in years. The hostess / owner / operator attentions were not focused on the running of her business. She seemed to be in the midst of some personal strife as she was absent on our arrival, departure, and for the majority of our stay. When she was present, she was engulfed in heavy sounding phone conversations. We wish her well and hope she delivers a better stay for future guests. The Northland Lodge is in need of some serious TLC. We hope that a future renovation might restore some of the original timeless design and charm of the original turn of the century home.
depends on the other guests
Our first night at the Lodge was spoiled by rude guests who could not control their children from running up and down late into the night and early in the morning. There is little insulation between the rooms, and if noisy neighbours are staying at the same time as you, it will be a much less peaceful and pleasant place. Our second night was tranquil and the Lodge's charm became more apparent. So it all depends on who else is visiting when you are.
Great Getaway
I spent a week at the northland lodge during the summer of 04. The accommodations were in keeping with the rustic setting of the park. With its relaxed setting, great times were had visiting with other guests every evening around the fireplace comparing our daily adventures. Located within walking distance of the town site gave the impression of camping while enjoying the luxury of a warm room and bed. I found the location to be perfect for exploring all the trails and scenic beauty the park has to offer. It is one the few locations I have found where the wildlife is actually abundant throughout the park. I had a fantastic time and would recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a relaxing trip close to nature
Great place to stay
We stayed here for two nights in May - me, my husband, two sons (aged 8 and 11) and my mother. Our family room was very comfortable with EXTREMELY comfortable beds and enough space for all of us. The shower in our room was rather small, but this is understandable when considering the fact that it isn't a purpose-built hotel / inn. It has lots of character and ir's true that you can hear the Falls from your room - wonderful! The town is charming and the deer and sheep on the streets really make you feel you're close to nature. Stacey's muffins for breakfast were great and she's a really welcoming hostess. We loved it here and would love to go back some time soon.
Nice B & B at Waterton
This was our first visit to Waterton Lakes and to the Northland, chosen mainly because of the positive reviews on this site. We were very pleased with the accommodations. The Northland is located close to the waterfalls, within easy walking distance of everything in the townsite, and some trailheads are practically right outside the door. It was easy to find, with plenty of parking around the back. We were greeted warmly by our hosts, a friendly couple who winter in Utah. Rooms were clean and comfortable, and we found the place quiet and good for sleeping after a long day of hiking. We enjoyed the muffins at breakfast, which are served promptly at 8:00. The hosts were a wealth of information about the park and town, and all of their recommendations were spot-on. As with most bed & breakfast establishments, I wouldn't suggest it for families with small children, but for couples it's a great choice in Waterton. A hot tub outside would make it perfect.
Sweet Retreat
Northland Lodge is situated on a mountain side in a residential area and well within walking distance of Waterton's main street. It is surrounded by trees and has parking in the back. Stacy, the manager, was friendly when I booked by phone -- for two nights, in late June 2007. When we arrived, Stacy welcomed us and the check-in went very fast. Our stay was in Room 1, on the upper level. Two of our large windows looked out onto the large wrap around deck. It was soothing to see trees from our room instead of a parking lot, or busy street. The room, which had two double beds and a private bathroom, was comfortable for me, my wife and our teenaged son. The line dried linens were a big plus and so were the tasty muffins, each morning. Our stay was very positive. My wife enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning and early evening, sipping coffee and reading, or doing needle work. I would recommend Northland to travellers who don't need a lot of space and luxury, but are looking for a quiet, cozy and relaxing retreat, that has more of a homey bed and breakfast feel.
Heaven!!
We found this on Trip Advisor and the reviews and pictures were accurate. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Inn Keeper, Stacy, from warm welcome we received after our long drive, to the hot muffins in the morning, and quiet evenings on the deck. Since the lodge has been in her family for a few generations, she was able to tell us the history of the lodge and give us lots of good tips on what to do in the area. After traveling in Europe for several summers, our stay at Northland Lodge felt like we were back in the Alps in many respects, especially the uniqueness of the lodge itself and the personality of the rooms. My two teenaged children and I fit comfortably in a triple room with a great view. If you're looking for a corporate hotel with sterile, cookie cutter rooms, this is not the place for you! If you're looking for a memorable stay in a wonderfully warm and welcoming historic Lodge while you're exploring the beauty in the surrounding area, this place is for you. We were glad we found this and we'll definitely be back. Highly recommended.
Wonderfully Quaint and Charming!
I stayed there with my partner for 3 nights. We were greeted by a very friendly staff including a very friendly cat. Jeanne is a fantastic hostess and is always willing to share her knowledge of the historic lodge and town with the guests. She was extremely accommodating, helpful and kind. This place in perfect for couples who are looking for a quiet evening by the fire after a day of hiking or sightseeing. The location of the lodge is suburb; on a hill tucked in behind the Cameron Falls (which you can hear while drifting off to sleep) and is just a short walk into the town site. I have stayed at 3 other places in Waterton and nothing beats the Northland! We travel to Waterton almost every year will continue to book a room here in advance. The complimentary muffins are warm and tasty. Despite the age of the lodge and its amenities, everything is kept clean and in good condition. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing. A great place to stay!
Quiet and Cozy
Upon my early arrival, the owner welcomed me offering fresh baked muffins and coffee. My room was very quiet private, located at the back of the house on ground level. My room was tastefully decorated in a western theme, cozy and very clean. The Lodge is situated on a hill with a beautiful waterfall close by. Just a short walk into the village. The Northland Lodge was great value for Waterton Lake. I'd definitely stay there again.
Pleasant place to stay at Waterton Lakes
Stacie, the owner, is just the right mix of friendliness and professionalism, and the muffins ARE wonderful. The " living room / breakfast room " is a comfortable place to pick up a book and relax. Stacie gave us access to the kitchen to make tea in the evening too. Nice;)
small, cramped, and rustic
Reviews and pictures did not clearly show us how tiny and cramped the rooms were here. The bathroom was smaller than our hall closet at home. Property is in a beautiful spot in the Waterton Park, but there are far more nicer places to stay than this. Have no idea how it is ranked so highly when it is such a crappy place. We switched to a motel down the street for the next couple nights of our stay and it was significantly better and less money. Very disappointed, especially since we booked based upon other comments and reviews here.
Small rooms, bad host, not worth the money
Difficult to find someone to check us in, very small room without even basic furniture like a bed side table or coffee / tea making facilities and tiny bathroom. Breakfast was an absolute farce - we were told it was at 8.30 and when we arrived at 8.35 all the other guests had finished their muffins (as that's all there is for breakfast!), and the host was surprised there were none left for us - we had to wait 45 minutes for a couple of muffins (which by the way weren't good at all), without being offered anything other than the juice from concentrate that is available. When the muffin eventually arrived it was slipped on the table by the host whilst on the phone, without a glance in our direction (she probably felt the whole situation was shameful). On checking out the host was on another call and didn't even ask how the stay was / wish us a pleasant day, most probably as she knew we were not happy. At over 200 USD, an absolute disgrace and the worst place we stayed on our 3 week stay in the national parks.
Cozy and Friendly
Northland Lodge is a great property, with lots of character and friendly owners. It's set above Waterton, and is a nice short walk down to the tourist attractions. Everything was neat and clean, and the morning muffins with the other guests was a treat. I'd definitely go back both to see more of Waterton and to stay at Northland again.
Peaceful stay in a quaint lodge
My wife and I travel to Waterton every fall to watch the elk rut and other wildlife. When possible, we try to stay at Northland Lodge. It is not a 5 star Hilton, but nothing in Waterton is. The lodge is quaint and homey, creaky and old. Its also charming, comfortable and quiet. Each room is different and has advantages and disadvantages. Travellers who stay here are 'in the know'. There is opportunity to swap stories at breakfast each morning with the other guests at the lodge. The host Jeanne is very accommodating and makes killer muffins, served with Saskatoon jam, hot coffee and tea. Thank you Jeanne, for our nice stay and great conversation.
An absolute jewel
Northland Lodge is everything it professes to be from the setting in Waterton-Glacier National Park, to the line dried and pressed linens, to the delicious morning muffins, to the resident deer and great special formulated foot soaks. Stacy is a perfect hostess and bed and breakfast operator. Enjoyed every blessed moment. Thank you, Stacy
Enchanting B & B
The Lodge is a cozy little B & B nestled into the mountainside, attractively located within a 5 minute walk to the Waterton townsite. The atmosphere is relaxed and the hospitality is first-rate. My mother and I have visited Waterton annually for many years, but have never found a place to stay as comfortable and charming as this place. We enjoyed freshly baked muffins and steaming hot coffee each morning and the unique foot soak the Lodge offers was a delightful find after a long day of hiking. This place will keep you coming back year after year.
Great location, service and stay!
We only spent one night at the Northland Lodge, renting two rooms. Everything was great and we really enjoyed the short time there and in the town of Waterton. The rooms were nice and very clean. My only grip would be that they could use a fan in the rooms and turn off the outdoor lighting or provide darker shades. Breakfast was nice with hot coffee, juice and warm muffins. Overall, this is a great place to stay in a great town for hiking, walking or just enjoying.
Quick visit, cold night
Was able to luck out and find one room on very short notice. The owner was friendly and accommodating. The building was nice and the room although small was good enough for us. The downsides. Had to share a bathroom with another room which isn't a huge deal but it's something. The thing that really bothered me was well we went out for the night I locked the door when I left, and when we came back that night the space heater in our room was gone.... being a cold night this was upsetting as the heater would have been nice. But not nearly upsetting as the fact the staff helped themselves to the room well we were out. I understand the B & B feel of the place but I also expect when I pay for a room that my privacy is respected. For that reason alone I give this place a negative review and will never be back again even in a pinch scenario.
Like a visit to a much beloved grandmother
My husband and I accidentally stumbled upon the Northland Lodge on our recent trip to Waterton Lakes National Park. Normally we rarely make reservations anywhere because we like to be flexible and go where the wind blows us. In this case, our gypsy ways threatened to ruin our trip because we just happened to arrive in Waterton Village on the day before Canada Day and were told by just about everyone that we didn't have a hope in hell of finding accomodations within a forty mile radius. But through a series of helpful tips and sheer dumb luck, we eventually hunted down the last room available at the Northland Lodge, which in our mind, turned out to be the best room. A visit to the Northland Lodge is like a visit to a much beloved grandmother, with all of its homey comforts, including fresh baked muffins. We were warmly welcomed, not only by a very gracious proprietor named Jean, but also by a very friendly tortoise shell kitty named Kissie which made us feel doubly at home. Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet with a private bath. And where else can you get ironed sheets scented with lavender? We quickly fell asleep to the soothing sounds of nearby Bertha Falls. The Lodge itself is set up on a hill with a wide veranda on all sides where one can relax and enjoy a view of the mountains. It has a rich history, which Jean loves to share with her guests. If you don't like elegant old Victorian houses with eclectic furniture or cats, the Northland Lodge probably isn't your cup of tea, but we loved it and would definitely go back there in a heartbeat. My only regret is that I didn't eat more muffins! Angie from Denver, Colorado
Total relaxation
The Northland Lodge in Waterton Park is like going back in time. The rooms are quiet and relaxing. Each one decorated with fun details. Be sure to look at the posters and memorabilia. The host was very accomodating. Besides making homemade muffins with a terrific Saskatoon Berry jam, she was knowledgable about the best hikes in the park. I spent one full day doing the Carthew-Alderson hike. I love to hike and this was truly spectacular.
Lovely, quiet and fresh muffins!
The lodge is in a quiet part of the small town, not far from the waterfall. There is a wrap around deck on the upper level. Rooms are quaint, but very clean and fresh. Sheets are line dried and then pressed with lavender and smell wonderful! There is coffee, juice and freshly baked muffins with jam for breakfast which was just right. Very cozy and a delightful stay. We stayed in room # 1, Joanie's room on the upper level which has an en suite bath and private entrance and a great view of the mountains.
Ok
We've been there mid September, choosing this place mainly based on Trip Advisor reviews, so our execrations were maybe too high. We stayed for two nights, getting a huge and dusty room, with a tiny tiny bathroom (I know, it's a old building), so tiny the washbasin is in the room... we didn't find the place so much appealing. At the time of the reservation, the only available room for the first night was a room with a shared bathroom (we were able to book a room with a private bathroom for the second night). We were happy to learn when we arrived that we finally were " upgraded " to a room with a private bathroom for the two nights, but less when we learned it would be at our own expense… isn't it weird?
Like Stepping Back in Time, Lovely :)
My husband and I stayed at the Northland Lodge for our first anniversary for 3 nights, and had a lovely time. We stayed in the small room at the back of the inn. The room itself was very small, but really nicely decorated and bright and refreshing, so we did not mind the small space. The bonus was that we had our own private entrance to our room off of the back deck directly to our parked car in the parking lot, and we also had a relatively private balcony with some nice chairs and a table to eat our breakfast at, shaded by some really nice trees (our outside room entrance was on the elbow of the deck, making for a nicely private balcony experience!) The Lodge itself was just like we had stepped back in time, even down to the lovely silver serving pieces for breakfast and the dishware. If you are looking for a unique and old-fashioned experience, this is the place for you. My husband and I loved the romantic stepping back in time feel. If you're looking for a full breakfast, you may have to suppliment what is served in the morning here. Although the home-made muffins and coffee service are superb, for big eaters like my husband, it was just an appetizer! This is by no means a luxury resort, but has a very homey and laid back feel. I loved the fresh air through the open windows at breakfast, watching the deer as we sipped our coffee and munched on our muffins. The hostess is very knowlegeable and helped us with some activities in the area as well. The only drawback with our room was that we shared a bath which can be an inconvenience for some, but we looked at it as an adventure. (By the way, the bathroom was VERY clean, even after use by a previous party... the hostess cleaned between uses.) Also our bed was only a double, so we might stay in a larger room the next time we visit!
Back In Time At The Northland Lodge
I really liked this lovely chalet-style B & B in Waterton. There is great attention to detail in the furnishings and decor and every attempt is to make it an authentic vintage establishment. It is not for everyone in that the rooms are small and they are close together, next to each other. This is not a hotel; it's a cozy B & B. The staff is excellent and they work hard to accommodate their guests. Breakfast in the morning includes good coffee, juices and muffins baked that morning. It's not enough food for hikers but is a good start. It's like a big lovely home and it's likely that you will get to know your fellow guests and exchange information. It's in Waterton and within walking distance to downtown and the piers. We were able to easily walk to the buses that were going to take us to the Carthew-Alderson trailhead, and the end of the hike itself put us right back in The Northland Lodge neighborhood. Also, there is a large deck on the second floor that is great for gatherings. We did well with our large group of 18 women. One night Mark served home made pizza and salad for a small cost, a nice option after a long day of hiking.
Excellent Choice
We were very happy with our recent stay in Waterton especially with the Northland Lodge. It was charming, comfortable and convenient to the whole town. The owner made us feel welcome and certainly made us want to come back.
So Relaxing
We stayed in Joanie's Room and it was wonderful. Was exactly what we were looking for. As a family with a toddler and preschooler this hotel fit are needs. Fridge, toaster and kettle in the room. Shower and toilet were in the bathroom with the sink in the living area. This was fine for us and the kids loved it! We had enough room to set up the play pen for our toddler to sleep in. The room cooled down at night and didn't get too warm during the day. The ceiling fan really helped. The smell of the lavender and fresh sheets were the most wonderful thing I have ever smelt. Warm coffee and muffins in the morning were so delicious. Momma deer and two fawns wondered thru the front yard on our first afternoon. My daughter was thrilled and watched them for 10 min. Such a wonderful experience. Wifi was also great. No TV in the room so we hooked up our DVD player we had in the car and it was great for the kids. The Ipad also kept them busy along with the lego and other games we brought with us. Overall this fit our needs perfect. We had such a relaxing wonderful time. I can't wait to come and stay again! Kids didn't want to leave when we had to check out.... guess we better book a couple extra nights next time. Thank you so much to The Northland Lodge.
2nd time around....
stayed here in 2009 and repeated this year 2014. lovely lodge, intimate and charming. beautiful views of the mountains from balcony. walking distance to town. can hear the waterfall from property a block awayline dried sheets, lavender scented and ironed. yum. old world charm...... wonderful host and friendly gathering in the morning with fresh muffins and tales from other travelers. our lovely hostesses really make this a wonderful experience.
A pleasant stay in Waterton
We had the basement apartment which was cool and relatively quiet. It has a big fridge and very nice bathroom. The only complaint is that the bedding had a strong detergent / softener smell. When I made this comment to the young person in charge at the time of payment, she seemed to dismiss it. In this day and age, most hotels now use scentless products for their sensitive customers. The breakfast was simple and good (I suggest the cinnamon coffee cake muffins over the berry ones). With off-street parking and downtown Waterton only 4 blocks away, this was a pretty good place to stay. Other Comments on Waterton: Take the hike up to Bear Hump starting at the Information Center as you enter town. Great views! Also do not be afraid to try the Crypt Lake hike. It was not as scary as people make it out to be and it is truly beautiful. Finally, we really like the Waffleton - a eatery that features waffles, both the traditional with syrup, strawberries, and / or nutella as well as their ham and swiss combo (you gotta try it).
The perfect vacation spot
We stayed there in early August. The surrounding area was beautiful. The Lodge and room was perfect. Also, We had so much fun on the hikes. Jeanne was very helpful in describing the history of the lodge and the best hikes in the surrounding area. We will definitely return.
Cozy Room
We drove to Waterton Lakes from Glacier National Park. We called to let the staff know that we would be arriving just around 6 pm (the cutoff of arrival time), to make sure that we did not need to make any arrangements for check-in. We were told someone would still be there. When we arrived, we parked in the back of the property and walked around to the front door, which was unlocked. Just inside the door is a small desk. To the right looks like someone's living room. We just felt a bit awkward and were not sure how to proceed or where to check in. We waited a few minutes, and were just about to call the after hours phone number when finally we saw someone, who waived us around to the kitchen where she checked us in. We stayed in the Blue Boy Room, which was cozy. There really wasn't much room for more than a bed in the room. Everything was clean: towels, sheets, etc. Breakfast was coffee and fresh baked muffins with preserves. Overall, it feels like you are staying in someone's home.
Relaxing quiet historic lodge
Very nice staff, Stacy in particular. It is a beautiful location a couple hundred yards from the Cameron Falls, with it's soothing sound in the night air. The rooms are very nice, like bedrooms of a house. You get ironed cotton sheets. You get stuffed with delicious home made muffins in the morning. You get to meet new friends. It was a great pleasure to sit in the veranda outside of the room, puffing an exquisite Partagas D.4, backed by a stiff charge of fine southern sipping whiskey, watching the stars paint the sky. For a brief interlude, all of your and the world's troubles go away.
Better than a wet tent.
My boyfriend and I were road-tripping and had planned on spending the night tenting in Waterton, but it was raining cats and dogs and while we're both adventurous, we weren't keen on sleeping in a natural bathtub nor the truck. Around 4pm we called several hotels that were unable to accommodate us, but thankfully the Northland Lodge had a room. We were informed at the time of booking that it would have a shared washroom, but figured it was better than nothing. The bedroom was cozy and the bed comfortable, but the other guests were quite loud and rude. Neither of us got a lick of sleep due to a gentleman snoring in another room, there was banging in the adjacent washroom in the middle of the night, and we were harassed by the other couples at the breakfast table for being an unmarried couple away together. Breakfast itself was amazing, especially the coffee! The Manager was very welcoming, suggesting places for dinner, even offering to move her own vehicle to the street so there was room for us to park in the back. I think the biggest criticism would be the price of our stay in comparison to the size of the room and having to share a washroom (and not getting any sleep), although it remains better than sleeping in the truck. Will we return? Maybe, but probably not.
Cozy, rustic lodging
Stayed here one night with my husband. The room that we stayed in was small and the place was older but it didn't matter much to us since we were only staying there one night. Even though it is an older building, it is very clean and well kept. Some of the rooms have shared bathrooms while others have private bathrooms. The private bathroom suites book up faster, so try to book in advance! The rates are reasonable, especially compared to other places in Waterton. Other amenities: free wifi, and they will do your laundry for you ($8 / load), continental breakfast provided, our room had a mini fridge About the breakfast: tea, coffee, juice are provided starting at 7:30 and muffins (which were delicious) are available at 8am. I assume they are provided a little later since they are freshly baked? or else I don't know why they would be served at different times. If you are going to go on a hike or something like that, this won't be enough food for you. A suggestion to the lodge is to provide some fresh fruit (bananas, oranges, apples are easy) and perhaps some hardboiled eggs to make it a more substantial breakfast.
A wonderful stay at Northland Lodge
We spent 2 short nights and it was memorable. The area was fantastic to explore and coming back to this cozy B & B was great. Jeanne is a delight and sure knows how to make one feel welcome. Very comfy, cozy beds and great coffee, muffins and conversations in the morning. Would love to come back!
Awesome!
We had an absolutely WONDERFUL time at Northland over Canada Day and 4th of July 2016. We had wine on the deck and the views were unparalleled. The rooms were cozy and comfortable. If you want the sterile cookie-cutter Holiday Inn type room, do NOT stay here! We loved the fresh-baked muffins at breakfast and the Saskatoon pie. Thanks Stacy, for all you did to make our stay so memorable.
Fabulously charming cozy clean and delightful
The Northland lodge is not just a place to stay - it is an experience. From the sheets that are hung out on the line and then ironed in a 1950's mangle machine with a slight scent of lavender on all the linens to the delightful, charming and very helpful hostess, Jeanne - this place was our favorite stay and a wonderful change from a regular hotel room. The deck was lovely to sit and have a glass of wine in the evening. We could open our bedroom window and listen to the waterfalls all night. The location is charming butted up against the mountain and a 10 minute lovely walk to down town. The muffins, coffee and visiting with other guests in the morning was icing on the cake. What a charming place to stay!! We will return again and again. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Waterton
Clean, welcoming, expensive
Northland was our first stop on a family road trip: we were disappointed and. after staying in a half-dozen other places, the disappointment remains, On the positive side: it was clean and welcoming and Waterton Lakes is magnificent. On the downside: weather was hot and rooms were unbearable. Also many people who are staying will either be hiking or travelling for the day - muffins for breakfast won't really set you up for either, so budget for a breakfast somewhere in the town. Obviously location is a factor in pricing but it was our most expensive stay of the trip and the least satisfactory. If you are looking to immerse yourself in old world 1920's charm, this is it, but at 2020's prices. If you are more interested in convenience, maybe stay outside the park and travel in for the day.
Great for couples, not so much for families with young children
We are a family of four (with two very young children, a 3-year old and a 1.5 year-old) and we stayed here for two nights in early-July. The hotel is beautifully situated, nestled up against a mountain just just steps away from Cameron Falls. The hotel features a balcony / deck that nearly wraps around the entire building. The views from this balcony are beautiful and it's a nice place to relax as the hotel provides chairs and tables on the deck for the guests to use. My kids loved this deck and they actually preferred sitting outside on the deck chairs than being inside. We stayed in the Garden Room (Room # 2), which features three beds. All the beds could be moved so we pushed a couple of them together with one side up against the wall to make one giant bed for our kids and we were able to sleep soundly without being worried about them falling off. The rooms also featured two entrances / exits -- there is one door that leads into the hallway and a second door that leads to the wraparound balcony. The hotel was built in the 1920s so we expected it to be noisy but it turned out to be very quiet. I think it's because the guests mainly use the door to the wrap-around deck as the primary entrance and exit where noise is better dispersed. There was one occasion when a couple of people were having a conversation outside our door that lead into the hallway and we could hear the entire conversation so I think the walls may indeed be thin but I think the hallways are rarely used by guests anyway. Another reason why it's so quiet is that the hotel is located in a very quiet part of the town (it's located on the southern and much quieter portion of Evergreen Ave). There is almost no reason for tourists to drive through this part of the town. Room # 2 is also at one end of the wrap-around deck so there was no foot traffic outside our door, which may also have contributed to the stillness of our room. Another nice thing about where the hotel is situated is that if you continue heading south on Evergreen Ave, you will reach the point where Cameron Creek feeds into Waterton Lake. My kids loved playing at this confluence and my 3-year old also found interesting that the water she saw cascading over Cameron Falls is the same water feeding the Lake. There were some nice touches in the room including a portable electric lantern, which was nice should you need to go to your car in the middle of the night (the parking lot is behind the hotel and it gets pretty dark out there). The room also provided a microwave, a refrigerator (an old fridge but controls were surprisingly responsive) and an electric kettle. Some of the folks complained about the heat but we didn't find it to be a problem. Our room had a ceiling fan and there were a couple of windows that could be opened to get some air circulation. That was enough to keep us cool. There were no TVs in the room but the wi-fi signal was strong and the internet was surprisingly fast. If my wife and I were travelling as a couple, I think we would have loved our stay. But I don't think I would recommend it for families with very young children. The main issue we had was with the bathroom. It was very small and cramped. I would describe is as being a little narrower than a public bathroom stall but twice the length, with a toilet on one end and a shower on the other end (the sink is outside in the main room). I'm hardly a big guy but even I felt cramped while taking a shower -- so I can't imagine what it must be like for bigger folks. But the main issue was that our kids are used to baths and they really disliked having to bathe in such a small shower stall. It was a pretty miserable experience for them and our 3-year old refused to go back into the bathroom during the remainder of our stay, even to use the potty. Another quibble we had was the availability of muffins in the morning. One the first morning, we went down around 9:45 AM and all the muffins were gone. The second morning, we went down at 9 AM and there was one muffin left. It was one delicious muffin but the early birds apparently gets all the muffins. But this is a minor quibble -- it forced us to try some of the breakfast fare in town and we have a very nice breakfast at Zum's. I also want to commend the staff. The building is rustic and old but it is well-maintained and clean. Everyone associated with the hotel was also very friendly.
Overall ambiance is exactly what I want
The Northland Lodge is exactly what my sister and I want when we visit Waterton in the fall. It has all the comforts of home and feelings of contentment. The house itself brings such personality to a stay in beautiful Waterton. I love the different themed rooms and we have our favourite. The staff is wonderful and always a pleasure to chat with and share stories of your day's excursions. Mornings bring the pleasure of homemade muffins and coffee in the dining room. Walk into the house and yell 'hello' if no one is around, that is the coziness level you can have with Stacy and her staff. They keep busy with hanging the wash on the line and the general upkeep of this beautiful house. I am hooked, we make our yearly excursion to Waterton and do not stay anywhere else. Thanks Stacey!
Loved this place
We loved this location for a number of reasons. The place has a great charm about it and we felt as though we could relax, utilising the large communal area for relaxing and catching up with the owner and other guests. Our room was very tidy and clean. It was one of the smaller rooms but this was exactly as had been described to us, and suited our needs very well. The location was great as we were away from the bussle of the town, and had very good uninterrupted sleep.
This is Waterton
Small, historic, well run, and family owned with great view of Vimy Peak. Terrific light breakfast each day. Comfortable rooms. Since the demise of Kilmorey, this has been my favorite lodge from which to experience Waterton Lakes National Park.
Just what we were looking for
Very enjoyable stay. Am a bit of an architectural history buff and really enjoyed learning about the history of this B & B. Enjoyed the morning muffins and even some afternoon tea - learned what Saskatoon berries are. Stayed in the garden room - nice view of the sun rise and enjoyed sitting on the deck with morning tea. (Watch out for the low door to the bathroom if you are over six feet). Would definitely stay here again if we get back to Waterton!
Enjoyed Northland Lodge
Had a very comfortable stay at this lodge... The sheets were the freshest - whitest ever. This place had character and the morning muffins were awesome!!! The owner was very friendly and very accommodating.
A real sleeper
A great place to stay in Waterton - comfortable, convenient lodging at a reasonable price in a historic home. The innkeeper, Stacy, was very friendly, helpful, and accomodating.... and the breakfast muffins were delicious. Very nice touches like excellent quality, line-dried, ironed sheets and good quality towels.
Lovely view from deck
We enjoyed our stay at Northland Lodge. It's a perfect location with a beautiful view of tne mountainsand within walking distance to town centre but not too close. Everything went smoothly. Delicious muffins. It's expensive, but everything is costly in Waterton. We will definitely stay at Northland Lodge again.
