Good Experience
Great food and a good price. I cant wait to go back and try other items. Service was good and food was tasty and warm. Beer and pop in the cooler was cold. Good parking and staff was friendly.
Delicious
When my husband and I moved to Iowa City, someone recommended El Paso to us. Nearly 6 months later, we tried it, and it was great! It's not super well marked, and it's very small, with maybe five tables, but the food is fantastic! They also have a great grocery with tons of beautiful produce. At first, I was put off by the fact that the menu didn't have any vegetarian food, but it was super easy to just adapt certain items to be vegetarian. They have probably the best fajita veggies I've ever had!
Most authentic Mexican food in town
Though there is no sign and it is billed as a grocery store, you can get the biggest, best Mexican meal here. There are a few tables, but take out is great too. You can order from the menu or get whatever you like if you describe it to the cook. We ordered two meals and both were excellent, tho we both took home half, so sharing is good idea. The number 6 is a quesadilla, cooked in dry pan (no oil) is $6.50 and incudes meat of our choice and cheese, with healthy portions of rice, beans, sour cream, and guacamole. The number 8 is carne asada is arrachera steak (2 6 inch pieces), served with bands, salad, guacamole, sour creamed grilled tomato. Both were delicious, and fresh and low cost. It seems that where are many regulars, that come for take out.
Best burrito ever
Best burrito I've ever had. Chorizo, steak, chicken are all awesome. Very good tortas and tacos as well. Grocery store / restaurant
LOVE the TACOS, and GREAT Ceviche
I drive 1 hr for this food, and I live in a fairly large city. But I must say this Mexican food is to die for!!! Pork tacos and steak are our favs, their just LITTLE mexican street tacos, I can eat like 5 and be pretty full. Red and green homemade hot sauces. Ceviche tostados on hot summer day are so refreshing...
Great food
My family went there and the food was great. The only bad thing was we thought it was a little hot in the building.
Truly authentic Mexican cuisine in IC
The owners of El Paso grocery on Hollywood Blvd in S. Iowa City must have read my mind. After operating their small taqueria out of the side of the grocery store, they opened this restaurant next to the HyVee on the strip. This place is a serious gem, and something Iowa City has needed for a long time. Unlike the chain restaurants in town they actually make their own food, and unlike the other Mexican restaurants, they serve tacos Mexican style, even with offal items on the menu. They also make some of the best menudo I have had (Sunday only). If you like real Mexican food this place is for you. Please support this place, Iowa City cannot afford to lose it.
