HK tramway

Definitely worth trip. Good value. We should have booked ahead as queue at place but queue went quick. Queue bit disorganised and usual Hong Kong 'push-and-shove' mentality to cope with. The ride is quite short with limited views. Worth paying for sky view extra. Lots of shops and cafes at top with a square to walk around just outside. Views are spectacular and give even more sense of awe of Hong Kong estate. Worth the trip

Nostalgic

Rode the tram in Hong Kong for the first time, and it was a unique experience. The tram crosses Hong Kong Island, making it a convenient way to reach major areas in the city. The fare was also very affordable, and I found it much more comfortable than walking around.

Ding Ding - try it

This is a must experience when visiting Hong Kong. Very easy to get on and off. Always get on at the back and leave from the front.

Private Ding Ding tour

We booked a private tram tour for 2 1 / 2 hours for an anniversary celebration. Great views of city on smooth ride and 1 / 2 way they stop for washroom break. Can bring food and drinks as has cooler and space for food and up to 30 guests. Washroom break has very clean washrooms. Easy to book online with information about what you can and cannot doo. Recommend for private function as great way to see Hong Kong on cool ding ding.

Safety issue

No security or safety if crime or psycho attacking people, staff is negligent, no police around. how no security in public places. Was case today - psycho guy screaming swear words, jumping on women- and no mechanisms to protect public. Sad, I won't return- if something happen - you on your own, it's no actual safety here

A unique Hong Kong experience

Really cool. Hop on and hop off where you want. Enter at the rear and then pay when you leave. Exit through the front. Try and have the exact change. October 2024, flat fare for an adult is 3 HKD. You can also pay with an Octopus Card if you have one. If your a tourist and just want to experience the ride, avoid going at rush hour. Clean. More seating on the upper level. They come quite regularly and make a lot of stops. If your in a hurry use the MTR. This is fine if you want to go a few stops, have time or just want to experience it.

An inexpensive way to see the sights in Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong Tramway provides an excellent way at a very low cost for a tourist to see the sights of Hong Kong Island on a slow moving vehicle. Even though most locals prefer MTR for rapid transit, nonetheless during rush hours the trams should be avoided due to the crowds. Also note that the trams only run along the harbor side of Hong Kong Island. There are no trams in the southern parts of Hong Kong, or anywhere in Kowloon or the New Territories.

Fun and historic way to get around HK central

Lots of fun and easy to enjoy. The route is simple and crosses the island from east to west. Fixed price of 3 HK$ per ride is very affordable. Can pay into the cash box or use touch your credit card. Pay on exit. The buses are more luxurious and air conditioned it the ding ding is a bit of history. I think they also same fare but I'm not sure.

Have to go once in HK

Tram is only available in Hong Kong Island, the fair price is super affordable but usually is without any air condition. The slow motion of the tram allows passengers to view the beauty of Hong Kong. Is purpose to visit in winter but you may want to consider if you are visiting Hong Kong in summer.

Cute

The trams on the island in Hong Kong are pretty and cute! A slow and convenient way to take in the sights of the city. Vintage Hong Kong!!

Fun ride, worth a try

It is. Dun ride, for one time experience. Pros: Cheap ($3) Con: Less frequency (depending on the route, another ride will come after 20 mins). Speed is also a little slow (20 km / hr). So if you have spare time, definitely worth the ride. Fun for children

cost effective but scenic way to travel across Hong Kong island

Founded in 1904, the Hong Kong Tramways boasts of having the largest double-deck tram fleet still in operation. Moreover, it claims to be Hong Kong's most environment-friendly mode of public transport. On our first night in the Hong Kong leg of our trip, we travelled from our hotel at the mid-levels to the North Point to have dinner. We then walked towards the Victoria Park and from there, rode the tram until the Admiralty MTR Station tram stop. There are six tram routes travelling east-west traversing Hong Kong Island. With 120 tram stops, you have to know which tram to ride and which stop to disembark at. The tram route is displayed on the LED panels at the front of any arriving tram. In our case, we could have ridden any tram going to the Western Market or to Shek Tong Tsui or to Kennedy Town as these all pass by the Admiralty MTR Station tram stop. The trams have a one-way flow of people where you get in the driver's side door and pay, then get off the other door. It is cheaper than the MTR, costing a flat rate of only HK$3 to ride the tram to any tram stop along the way. There is a card reader upon entering the tram, which can read the Octopus Card, Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and Unionpay cards. There is also a coin box where passengers can pay in cash but you need to pay the exact amount, or else you will not be able to get any change back. We used our Octopus card for the trip. I found the tram easier to ride than the MTR because there is less walking to get to the ticketing station and platforms_the tram stops are right at the street level. Since the trams are double decker, we were able to get seats at the upper deck. It offers an unobstructed view of the lights and colors of Hong Kong especially at night. The trams are clean and well-maintained. You have to be mindful of your footing, though, when going up and down from the upper deck The driver will not wait for all passengers to sit back once they are authorized to proceed. Likewise, be prepared to hop off the tram just before you reach the station. It was great being able to ride in this iconic transport that traces its history to almost 120 years. I would definitely get in the Ding Ding again when traveling east-west within Hong Kong Island.

Great way to travel around

Our family of two adults, a 9 year old and a 6 year old took the trams during the busy Chinese New Year holidays. We took the ferry from Kowloon where we were staying to Central pier and followed the walkway / footpath bridges which led us to Pedder Street where we boarded the tram (from the back) and headed to Causeway Bay to a traditional flower market for Chinese New Year at Victoria Park. The trams are small so if you don't get a seat up stairs or down stairs then you'll stand. People get on and off regularly so it's not an issue. A classic mode of transport to see the modern landscape of Hong Kong. It's cheap too! Enjoy.

Memories of the old Hong Kong

Of course you have to have a ride. Hop and sit back and see Hong Kong. Alot of the old Hong Kong is gone but these great old trams bring back memories from many years ago. A bit crowded nut wait as there are a lot of them coming along and you can get a less crowded one. Very cheap so easy to pop on and off.

2024-01-31 07:06:39

Not to be missed

Brilliant! The top deck of the trams gives you a great view over the busy streets as these lovely old trams weave their way through the crazy traffic. Highly recommended.

2023-12-27 01:43:43

Old Fashioned Tram

ride a station just to experience the old fashioned tram. should have taken a longer ride and sat on the upper deck for better experience.

Nostalgia

Loved it so much. Very romantic and classic. Reminds me of the days when i was a kid. I heard that many voices call to terminate it. Please do not. Keep it going for the good nostalgia

Great experience in Ding Ding

Ding Ding has upstairs seating area that can enjoy a nice view from the tram. Fare of the tram only HK$3 which was the best way to explore the local street and good for sightseeing. Highly recommend to traveler!!

2023-05-16 02:29:03

Great Icon

The Ding Ding is an icon in HK and a must ride for the visitors. The top deck was great for viewing. The experience was unique and historic.

2023-05-03 09:24:53

Great way to see the city. Hong kh [

A trip on the double decker tram is a must when visiting Hong Kong. It runs on the Island side of Hong Kong only east to west, Kennedy Town to North Point with a side route to Happy Valley. If you buy an octopus card senior, the fare is 1.30 HK$, which translates to about 20 cents US. Unbelievably cheap. Scan your card when exiting to pay fare. The trams are not fast, so it makes for good viewing and picture taking, however not for time sensitive matters. Narrow tricky stairs to the upper deck, so caution advised. Not wheelchair accessible. A clear day, dry air activity. Enjoy.

Avalie o post!😉

Amazing services, Great Services

I like to ride on " Ding Ding " because you can see Hong Kong from a different perspective; sometimes, Ding Ding offers people free ride days, just like February 25, 2023. Ding ding has so many routes. The fare is only $3 for adults, and for the elderly or people over 65 is $2. The fun about riding the ding ding is you can see, smell, look at, and explore the city, and it is a great site for those just visiting Hong Kong.

Favourite part of HK visit

My favourite activity in Hong Kong city. Don't know what it is about them, they seem to fascinate me, they are just so tall.

2023-01-13 12:30:55

Not the fastest but by far the cutest way of transport in HK

The Ding Ding is as much as part of (old) Hong Kong as the Peak, Star Ferry and Lan Kwai Fong. Still widely used due to the (cheap) fare, buit for visitors a great event to close your eyes and experience old and lively Hong Kong. It brings you easily from west to Causeway Bay and thanks to the low speed, you'll easily feel how Hong Kong was in the last decades…. a little advise; stop at Fenwick St in Wan Chai and walk up to St Francis Yard and visit the Star Street Precinct and se how old Hong Kong gets revitalized and trendy little shops and coffee corners pop up to welcome you

2022-12-27 12:21:00

Best way to enjoy the City

Take nostalgic trip on these antique trams, go upstairs and enjoy a wonderful view of HK, from the modern cityscape in Central to old Western district. Flat rate of only HK$3.00 or less than US$0.50 is the best trip you will pay for. It also super convenient for short trips, I used the mode of transport all the time.

2022-11-13 07:47:17

See the upper deck Hongkong

is is a very good communication on the island, you might have time to travel and use this tranway system, it takes about 40 minuts to travel in the tram from Shau Kei wan to Kennedy Town

2022-11-01 06:41:32

Another attraction of the city is the double-decker trams. Looks great, rode it twice. In Hong Kong, the first trams appeared in 1904, and unusual, two-story trams appeared in 1912. The first two-story trams were with an open top, which performed a rather decorative function: all kinds of plants were located at the top. Since 1925 fully glazed trams have been put into operation.

2022-10-20 02:43:57

Still the most reasonable mode of transport compared to MRT, slow but steady

Serves certain area within the line Reasonable cheaper than MTR but definitely slower Good for sightseeing Avoid during rush / peak hours

2022-09-18 05:27:43

Great outing with best views

We had a fun day and the views at the top were worth the queue. There were a lot of people and the tram was crowded, but it was well worth the visit!

A wonderful piece of old Hong Kong

Born and raised in Hong Kong, I still love taking the tram whenever I have the chance. You can choose to sit (or stand) in the upper deck or lower deck. It may not be as appealing when crowded but the minute you get a gentle breeze of wind on your face and a feeling of serenity, that moment is everything.

2022-06-09 23:08:55

Noisey, rough and enjoyable

When I have the time to take it slowly I take the tram. They rattle, don't appear to have much in the way of suspension and can get crowded. If possible I go up stairs and sit in the front. During summer with the windows open there is a nice breeze.

2022-05-18 00:11:00

Representing Old Hong Kong

The slow but cheap Ding Ding is one of the must-ride for tourists. If you are not in a hurry, take a Ding Ding and enjoy the street view of the Hong Kong side!

2022-02-07 22:16:16

Best transportation of the city

The map of history, heritage, culture and city development all lay under the route of one single transportation. Hong Kong Tramways is definitely the light of the city allowing you to travel around Hong Kong Island linking East and West in a convenient, highly accessible and reasonable price.

What a lovely treasure to do a magic travel on Ding Ding

Built by the British, now run by a FRENCH company (!!!) Hong Kong Tramway as much as San Francisco tramway or Lissabon Tramway are landmark transport means that have this special magic ! Used by tourists but as much as by locals, this means of transport is second to none to enjoy round trips along Hong Kong streets. That is by all standards the fastest and most relaxing way to experience the buzz and vivid life of Hong Kong. And it is cheap - so cheap that it is a must !

2021-12-10 22:45:31

First time to ride

When the first time I arrived in Hong Kong I'm very curious about the tram on how it moving for how many years that past they used it until now for transportation..

2021-09-14 06:07:21

Back to Front Boarding

They can be very crowded and slow and there is a trick to getting on, but catching the tram through the centre of Hong Kong can be a bit of fun. The best trip is probably between Central and Causeway Bay. As the tram trundles down the middle of the street, you get a good chance to see the city. To get on, make your way to the tram stop in the middle of the road, and join the throng of people who are usually waiting for the next tram. Don't make the mistake of aiming for the front doors. That's the exit. It's a bit back to front but to get on, you use the back doors where there is a turnstile and you leave through the front doors and pay as you get off. At a flat rate of HKD $2.60, it's the cheapest ride in the city, beating even the Star Ferry. You can't buy tickets beforehand. Either use an Octopus card (these are incredibly handy for all transport) or drop the coins in the box by the driver when you leave. The only catch with using cash, is that you'll need to have small coins because they won't give you any change. Be warned, the line to get on is not very orderly but the trams come frequently so if you seem to get pushed out of the way the first time, there will be another one along very soon. The fare covers whatever distance you travel so you can hop on and hop off whenever you like. For general getting around, the MTR train system is much more efficient. It's also cheap and is fast and easy to use. Taxis are also inexpensive and safe in Hong Kong.

2021-07-24 01:01:20

Some of these iconic trams air-conditioned now

A fun way to get around if you have time - but not so in summer when it can get crowded and hot (2nd level is more breezy and less exhaust fume from the traffic). I hopped on one lately and was surprised to find it air-conditioned. Now these are probably far and few in between so I would not suggest waiting for one - but if you happened on one during the summer then worth considering.

2021-07-11 23:33:51

old but gold

the famous local hong kong tram is one of the oldest transport available in hong kong for the past tens of years.. everyone likes it cause it is slow and nice - though at times during peak hours is a hassle to get in OR get out of the tram, it can be a slow transport compared to our famous MTR (Metro) and or Bus servcies available all over hong kong - but it is a MUST try for all travellers to hong kong.

2021-06-02 07:30:46

2021-04-05 07:57:46

Convenient transport across Hong Kong Island

At HKD 2.3, it is probably the cheapest public transport for you to get around the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. You can hop on and hop out of the tram at a flat rate of HKD 2.3. Moreover, it emit zero greenhouse gas (electric powered) and it doesn't even have air-con (rush for the 2nd storey during summer).

2021-01-30 09:05:54

A great way to orient yourself before walking

If you want to skip the MTR these trams are the best 40 cents you'll ever spend. Pick one up in Central and checkout Causeway Bay. I believe that one tram operates as a restaurant. Note places to visit as you cruise on by. They get pretty crowded but follow the locals.

2020-12-26 09:01:35

Fun experience

Relaxation of viewing mongkok, tsim sa, etc. Even the night the lights of hong kong is alight and alive.

Ding Dings are a quintessential part of Hong Kong

Ding-Dings are quintessential to Hong Kong and popular activity for visitors to the city. These double-decker tramcars have plied the streets of HK Island since 1904, offering cheap rides for locals and a great experience for tourists for well over a century. While formally known as Hong Kong Tramways, The beloved name (Ding Ding) refers to the bell sound made when tramcars announce stops to drop off and pick up passengers. In short, these are slowly moving tramcars that make their way through various districts of Hong Kong Island, taking in local markets, restaurants and Hong Kong skyscrapers along the way. There are numerous stops so you can get on or off every 50 to 100 metres, when and wherever you like. There are quite a few of the Ding-dings so you don't have to wait long to board one. During normal times, Ding-dings can be very full. When this happens, simply wait for the next one to roll up to the ding-ding stop and board it instead. Best views are upstairs where you have better vantage points of the streets and market scenes around you. If you are tall, the downstairs can present challenges for seeing outside. There are six route variations between Kennedy Town in the west to Shan Kei Wan in the east. Tramcars run from 5.45am to midnight each day, depending on the route. Rides are now HK$2.60 per adult and HK$2.30 per child. Best to pay with Octopus Card. Note that you will pay for your ride when exiting the Ding Ding. Boarding occurs from the back. Then simply find and take a seat to enjoy your ride. When you exit, tap your Octopus Card or drop your coins in the till next to the driver. Payments are not taken nor is change given by the driver so have exact payment ready when leaving.

2018-11-06 04:05:34

Unique ride

Affectionately called Ding Ding the tramway is an easy means of transportation on Hong Kong Island between the western area to the east. Just hop on through the turnstiles or an open flap. You will need an Octopus card to pay your fare when you alight. Standard fare HKD2.60 per ride and HKD1.20 for 65+.

Excellent way to get around HK

The teams a quite small and can get a bit crowded so be sure to ring the bell early and give your self time to get down the stairs. This is a great way to see HK. The trams are very frequent.

Memorable experience

When i come to Hong Kong - riding double-decker tram is a must for each visit. If tram is two crowded - better to wait another one to enjoy views from second floor

Try their golden ticket ride

It was a trip down memory lane, when we took this " ding-ding " tram services, and this is really something worth exploring on, when you go to Hong Kong (HKG). My family and I got the " Golden Ticket Tour ", and it was a real deal: one ride on the " Colonial Tramway " (a heavily refurbished tram that last operated in 1950s / 60s), and unlimited tram rides over the next 48hours. When we boarded, we were quickly briefed and headed straight to the top deck, and grabbed the shaded seats. (It was a rather sunny day even though it was year end). One of the service staff would come up later, give a safety briefing, and then help us take pictures. She explained that this service was less crowded for the morning ride that we took. She was multi-lingual, and was very friendly. The tram would trundle on slowly on it's own trackways, and pass many meaningful places, including not too far off from the opulent and overpriced " The Peak ", and it really showed off well the daily lives of people on Hong Kong island. There is a multi-lingual headset which plays all major European and East Asian languages, and it is a very good running commentary of the places the tram would pass by. Overall a very good experience, and I would have given it 5 stars, if not for the fact that it's hard to find the starting point where you board. We walked past it several times, and it's only because I could speak Cantonese, that I managed to locate it. Where was it, nothing more than --> an elderly bored looking man, fanning himself on a plastic stool outside a corner of the hotel. He just waved at us the general area to queue, and proceeded to busy himself on his mobile. I ended up telling all the fellow tourists who came later, that the nondescript corner, is the official starting point. The toilet facilities were also rudimentary, consisting of two basic portable toilets nearby, so do take note and plan accordingly.

Ding Ding

As the name suggests that's what it all about riding in a two story very skinny tram for a bygone era but what a awesome way to look around Hong Kong we spent a couple of hours riding the tram just taking in the sites and for a small fee

2016-05-09 08:27:21

Ding Ding, clang clang

Soon these trams will be just a memory, so when in Hong Kong its a must see. And its the best priced ride in town only HKD$2.10 per ride what a bargin. This is Hong Kong's SFO cable cars.

Easy

Hop on and off Used the tram from wanchai to csuseway bay. Very easy. Has a unique rustic feeling to it Edpecially the ding2 sound

Quaint tram ride

We really enjoyed our ride on the Ding Dings. We got on at Shau Kei Wah, rode to Happy Valley where we alighted and then caught another to Kennedy town. Thus we travelled the whole route and all for $1.10 each per leg (seniors rate). Sitting up the top of these old work horses, you really get a different perspective of the streets and with their frequent stops, have to time to soak up the atmosphere. It will be a shame if they are taken out of service as rumoured. Tip We took our ride on a Monday at lunchtime in November.... no crowds.

2015-07-03 04:22:46

Absolutely essential

For locals and tourists alike. A vital transport mode full of character and mishap. Just hop on a ride to the terminus, either direction. See the many interesting facets of Hong Kong.

2015-06-22 02:55:25

City sightseeing

it's a 2 level of tram going to city. the cost is HK$3.20 per way. it is nice to see the city from upper level. However, it doesn't have air condition, would be nice if they do, considering the weather is very humid.

2015-05-27 03:59:02

Absolutely great!

I had travelled on the ding ding from Kennedy Town to Happy Valley and to Sau Kei Wan. It cost HKD 2.30 regardless of the distance and is a great way to see Hong Kong Island. In fact, it is about the cheapest way to travel around on the northern part of Hong Kong Island, and if you are not in Hong Kong for business but for leisure, this is probably the best way to see the northern part of Hong Kong Island. Getting off at various stations along Des Voeux Road would bring you to within walking distance of all the usuall places of interest, such as Hollywood Road, Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay, and for the lion hearted (those who are more adventurous), places less travelled where you can see the local way of life rather than how tourists burn holes in their pockets. LOL! I saved a lot of time and money travelling on the Ding Ding instead of taking the MTR. If you ask me, why time, since the MTR is reputed to be very fast, well, you know, the amount of walking you have to do inside Central or Hong Kong Stations, for example, and climbing in and out of the stations and all that, it's actually faster to just go to a Ding Ding station and continue your journey to your next destination.

Hong Kong Ding Ding Trams ride is a Best Value and a must try

When in HK takie a Tram that transverse HK Island in an East -West direction. Its the Best way to see HK as the locals do. Costs only Hk2.30 for the whole journey of 100 stops. Great value. Take to the last terminal stop Shau Kei Wan going East. GET OUT AND TAKE A 2 minutes walk to the open air market selling all kinds of food fruits and vegetables. And they are cheap and plentiful. A sight to behold. Then have a pineapple Ebi burger at the MacDonald located at the terminal with a great birds eye view of the Trams. Watch the locals get on with their lives Well worth the one hour journey from Central. In winter or Spring lovely to sit upstairs first row to catch the cold air blowing through.

2015-02-08 16:38:30

Fun!!

Funny experience on the local trams! They call them Ding Dong because of the noise they make... It is definitely worth trying it when in HK... They are super cheap and you can either pay with the octopus card or with coins when you exit.

Perhaps once

Never having experienced the tram, I thought it a good way to get from Wanchai to Central. It is, possibly. If you are tall and on the upper deck, much crouching is needed to see where you are going. Furthermore, the trams can get packed and, therefore, any one concerned about SARS or other diseases might want to think twice. Personally, I think it's worth doing once.

2013-10-16 12:25:14

Do take the Ding Ding

Always try out the tram which runs along the north side of Hong Kong island outside of the office rush hours. What I love about HK is that is very much a walking city. Few people except politicians and Tai Tais (ladies who lunch), drive in Central so the best way to get short distances is by tram. Enter via the back platform and make your way upstairs, grabbing the handle bars as you go. The tramlines turn and you find yourself being suddenly jostled hard. The best view I think is not at the front but the back = cool cruising, superb photo ops of the many hanging neon signs at night. You only pay as you get off downstairs at the front. 10 / 10 for value and atmosphere. Not recommended for the infirm and those with strollers, too hard to get through the entry turnstiles. Don't wear stilettos either, easy to get caught in the wooden floors. Take also crossing the roads to board the trams as the platforms are in the centre of multi-lane roads shared with double decker buses, mini buses, taxi, rick shaws and bikes! " Where is the tram = Ding ding hai bin doh? "

Hong Kong Ding Ding - Fantastic (cheap) experience on Hong Kong Island

The Hong Kong Tramway is more better known as the 'Ding Ding'. See the TA listing under this name for a collection of reviews for this attraction, which is regularly rated in the top twenty for Hong Kong. Personally, we both love riding the 'Ding Ding' when its not too crowded or hot outside. For just HK$2.30 (adult) and HK$1.20 (children) per ride, you really can't go wrong with this quick, easy and child-friendly attraction. The Ding Ding slowly plies its way along Hennessy Road and is best taken between Sheung Wan and Causeway Bay. We enjoy it best at nighttime when you can see the endless building lights, especially as you approach Causeway Bay. You can find a nice map on the Hong Kong Tramway website and a nice travel guide for the Ding Ding on the Discover Hong Kong Website, both are worth taking a look at if you intend to use the Ding Ding while on Hong Kong Island.

An excellent way to spend HK$2

These old-fashioned tram cars are a blast to ride and a fun way to experience travel along the HK island major streets. The cost is just HK$2 per ride, making this ridiculously cheap and good value for money. In addition to the star ferry (our historical ferry boat) and the peak tram, this is our third historic means for transportation that has been well preserved. Like the others, HK manages to make continued use of the Cable Cars. The The advertisements lining the sides of the street trams are also interesting, helping add context and color to your photos of the districts between Causeway Bay all the way past the main central district. We recommend taking a ride on the cable car while you are touring HK island side attractions, you can hop and off for a quick ride, takes just 5-20 minutes depending on how long you want to stay on.

All part of the Hong Kong experience

What a great way to experience what might be considered by many to be an outdated mode of transport in a metropolitan city. These trams were charming, functional and plentiful. They were a great way to get around and get into the thick of HK life. Quite crowded in peak hours but a terrific way to meet local people who seemed quite happy to 'chat' or offer useful travel advice. The top floof was great for views but always seemed hotter. The trams were a fun, cheap way to hop-on-hop-off and see the sights as they covered a large area.

Cram on the Tram... You cannot miss this for HKD2.30

As a resident in HK, I wanted to provide an update on the Tram experience. When I first moved here, I wanted to try everything, test it all out, explore, experience - after all that's why you travel isn't it!! So cramming on the tram was an experience, but now two years later I am in agreement that this is truly one of the most cost effective ways of seeing HK. Just do it any other day than a Sunday or you will not enjoy the ride as you will be packed in like a sardine can! For a total of USD 0.30cents, / HKD$2.30 its definitely worth it. If you have a local octopus card you can just tap this as you exit, otherwise make sure you have the coins as like all transport in HK, you have the exact fare or you simply don't get your change. The tram literally runs along the northern part of HK Island and shows a variety of different sites as you make your way from Witty Street Deport down through central, causeway bay and off through to North Point. The most enjoyable experience I have had on the trams is simply hopping on one end, and soaking up the sites as it makes it way to the other side of HK Island. A must for anyone who is visiting HK!

Ding Ding and CheepCheep

A lovely means of travel along the north side of Hong Kong Island. Although the price is not " hop-on-hop off " inclusive it is cheap enough for most people not to have to worry about the cost.

Old HK Method of Travel

The " Ding Ding " is one of cheapest methods of transportation in HK. You can use the Octopus card and at 1 point, it was free for senior citizens. It is a good way to see HK for tourists as it slowly makes its way across. It is subject to traffic as it shares the roads with buses and cars. In the summer, it is quite hot and depending on the time of day, it will be an oven not only from the heat but from the exhaust fumes from the buses and cars. Like the Star Ferry, the Ding Ding is the classical HK way to travel.

Cheap ride and You can see the real Hong Kong neighborhood

You get on at the rear and get off at the front, pay $2.30 Hong Kong dollar as you exit, be warn you must have exact change or an Octopus card, one price for the whole journey, the most interesting portion of the ride is from Causeway Bay to Central, unless you want to peek into the other face of Hong Kong, you can never got lost, when you feel you had enough, just get off and look for a stop on the opposit side, it should bring you back where you start, it's safe on the car, no crime activity was ever reported, just act like you are in any other country, watch your belongs at all the time, it's hot in the afternoon, as there are no air condition, best time in late evening, never on weekends, get on when you see the car is not full, so you can have a seat up stair, otherwise don't get on at all, standing room only is not adviceable, enjoy the ride.

What a Fabulous Way to Explore the Surroundings!

Unbelievably good value! For approx. 36 pence (Uk Sterling) you can ride the tram from one end to the other. Its a super way of finding your bearings and exploring the area. We got on and did a full circle before getting off again. Sit on the top at the front if you can for the best view.

2014-02-08 15:49:50

All the travel we needed for HK$30

Loved travelling on the tram. Each trip is $2.30, so if you go from one end of the island to the other it's still only 2.30 as long as you don't get off. Easiest way to pay is by Octopus card, we had one from our last visit and just topped it up at a 7 / 11. The trams are very clean. Get on at the back and off at the front where you either swipe your Octopus card or pay the driver - correct fare only, no change given. Octopus is a great way to pay for most things bus, tram, star ferry and even McDonalds!

2015-03-01 18:17:03

you have to try it

this thin, high, funny trains are ikons of Hong Kong Central, easy to use, great experience and sightseeing, you have to try them! Especially useful if you go from Central towards Admiralty or Causawaybay.

Use Your Octopus Card

Great way to get around, and fun too. You can use your Octopus card, much better than those overpriced hop on hop off bus tours. Jump on get off nd then travel back to where you got on!

Great fun

We really enjoyed this tour, and we are not the sort of people who do tours ! But this was informative, fun and you can jump on and of as many times as you like. Buy the extended 48 hour package as it takes on 3 parts of Hong Kong, Kowloon and Stanley.

I obserwować...

A Cheap, Convenient City Tour

If you have some time to spare and you can't afford those expensive Big Bus Tours, then I highly recommend riding the Ding Ding tram. It's a convenient way to see the city as the tram runs almost the entire length of Hong Kong island. We rode it from the Sheung Wan district, thru the Central, Admiralty, and Wan Chai central areas, up to Victoria Park at the end of the Causeway Bay area. It costs $2.30 wherever stop you get-on and get-off. It runs along the main roads so you can see the different parts of the city, the transformation from the old districts to the busy, modern ones, and watch the residents do their normal activities. The tram itself is old but it's clean and the ride is comfortable. I recommend seating at the upper deck and, since there are a lot of trams, pick one that's not packed so you can choose a seat. As a tip, you enter the tram from the back and exit at the front. Payment is made using coins or octopus card when you get-off the tram.

A cheap- and fun way to travel across Hong Kong Island

Every time my wife and I visit Hong Kong, we always make sure to find time for a trip on one of the Hong Kong Tramways. Please note that, if you come from North America and ask for directions to the streetcars you will only get blank stares. It's TRAMWAYS, not streetcars! The Tramways, also called Ding Dings, are double deckers. Try to get a seat on the upper floor, right up front, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the passing street life below, while the Tramway clanks and sways along. There seems to be no regular schedule, but Tramways come along every few minutes, sometimes 2-3 behind each other. Depending on the time of the day, the Ding Dings can be packed. If you are on the upper floor, leave plenty of time before your departure, because you will have to squeeze down a very tight spiral staircase, and then push to the front, where the pay station is located, right next to the driver. Only exact cash ($HK 2.30=$US 0.25) or the Octopus Card are being accepted. Not all Tramways travel from end station to end station. The final stop before the turnaround is displayed at the front of the Ding Ding. Consult your street map, before getting on. We found the most interesting stretch of Tramways travel from " Central " to the " Western Market ", because you will get a glimpse at the " Old Hong Kong " with colorful shop signs (or neon signs), some deliveries of goods still by hand-pushed dollies, old fashioned shops, all in a somewhat chaotic atmosphere. We usually get off at the " Western Market ", where we can enjoy a light lunch or a piece of cake with cappuccino at the German Bakery / Cafe' " Das Gute ". A trip on one of these Tramways is even more colorful at night.

2018-05-26 02:30:15

Ding ding ding, ding dong ding the travel duration is slow as those creeping to Dec at the end

If you are travelling to more than 3 MTR stops, it will be better to use the MTR instead to be efficient Esp at peak timings, the crowd is there for the seats and the tram is really snailing about at inches (the traffic does affect in a way, we were caught in a jam where the trams in front are stucked at out front too) so be mentally prepared if u r in the peaking hours However, if you are doing it for the early mornings like on a weekends, everything should be smoother for someone new to their streets, it is good to sit upclose at the front (near to driver's seat) esp on the top deck so that u could have a clearer view of the tram stop numbers and you will be in the known of when to alight For those taking the tram tour, their terminal station is not clear, it is not exactly a station, so you just have to observe and play by ear and wait around before the tour starts Even though it is unlimited rides on the tram with the tour purchased, u still need to have the physical hardcopy of the tram (unlimted) ticket to enjoy the usage. (softcopies and app copies doesn't count) - & yes, although the tour should end within an hour, however at a peak period like after 530pm, be prepared for an additional 15min delay pls

One of the best way to see Hong Kong

If you are not in a hurry with time to spare, one of the best way to see Hong Kong island is to take a ride on the more than 100 year old Hong Kong tramway, more affectionately known as 'Ding Ding'. It only cost HKD2.60 to ride on one regardless of length of the trip. The best place to enjoy your ride is on the upper deck, there by the open window you will get to experience Hong Kong up close for its sights, sounds and scent of the city. If you take the line all the way from Shau Kei Wan in the Eastern part of Hong Kong island all the way to Kennedy Town, you will get to travel through streets and neighborhood where the local live, work and play. The contrast of Shau Kei Wan, North Point to the shopping district of Causeway Bay, onto the financial district of Central could not be greater! And if you spot a local tea house when they put out freshly baked egg tarts for the afternoon, you can just hop off at the next station to sample the rich and creamy taste of one of my favorite afternoon delights. All it cost is another HKD2.60 when you hop on the next tram after you have satisfied your tummy. To take the tram, remember to board from the back of the tram then climb on the stairway to the upper deck. You alight through the front stairway and pay just before you light from the front of the tram. You can pay cash but I find it is most convenient to pay by tapping the Octopus card as you exit. The Octopus card is accepted on all MTR, Kowloon rail (to China), cross harbor ferries, trams (including the Peak Tram which takes you to the top of Victoria Peak) as well as for payment for tit-bits or purchases at all the convenience stores in the SAR territory. It is truly an experience you will not forget. I highly recommend it as a must try if you want to see Hong Kong.

2015-07-16 09:13:07

Hop-on hop-off bus alternative

As we were not rushing anywhere, we boarded a tram that was relatively empty so that we could get the front seats on the upper deck. We made 3 trips -- from Wanchai to North Point; from North Point to Kennedy Town; and from Kennedy Town to Happy Valley. The street scenes and the neighborhoods are fascinating. Get on the tram at the back and pay with the Octopus card or the exact fare in cash at the front before getting off.

A Must Ride Tram Whenever you visit Hong Kong

The tram ride was great, after we went to Wing On Dept Store and Sincere Dept. Store from Shung Wan, we did take the tram for Shung Wan all the way to North Point, it was one of a kind of experience, wherein you see all the great sights of Hong Kong, as the tram traveled to your desired destination. Highly recommend to take the Upper Deck Seats to get a fantastic view of Hong Kong.

The largest double decked tram system in the world

The Hong Kong double-decker trams have been running since 1904. They are the cheapest form of transportation in Hong Kong. The cheap fares in part explain the crowded trams. The trams are slow but they provide a visitor with an interesting insight into Hong Kong. The routes extend from Kennedy Town in the West to Shau Kei Wan in the East on Hong Kong Island. There are 118 stops and there is a tram stop roughly every 250 meters. There are 161 passenger trams and they constitute the world's largest double-decker tram system. History buffs should remember that the trams run along the harbor shoreline, as it existed in 1904. This is one way to see how much land has been reclaimed in the last century. The trams are all painted with advertisements that are very colorful. Companies can hire a tramcar for a year and use the tram body as a mobile advertisement. Considerable ingenuity goes into the decoration of the trams. For a wonderful view of the city from a different perspective, climb to the upper level and sit in the front seats of the tram to see Hong Kong from an entirely different perspective. Be sure to bring your camera!

A quaint piece of history amidst flashy Ferraris

The tramway is over a century old. The ticket payment system is pretty simple. Sit on the upper deck and enjoy the sights and sounds of Hong Kong. In a frightfully expensive city, this is a cheap, efficient, reliable and clean way of travelling. And yes, you can see the expensive malls, the flashy cars, the fancily dressed folks and so on. On simply a dime from this tram!

My favor in Hong Kong

A cheap and easy way to look around the island, it go through the city center of the island and is recommended to ride it in non rush evening.

Take the Old Tram to Shau Kei Wan

We've been to HK many times but this time decided to escaoe from the touristy areas and explore some slices of 'old' Hong Kong. We'd been advised to take the MTR to Shaukei Wan - on the island line past Causeway Bay. We did this and came tio the surface to find a fascinating and 'real' part of HK that few tourists get to see or visit. If you like the feel of street markets, shops, HK people going about their business, some temples and other local sights then heade for this area. A huge surprsie fgor us was to find that the old island tram that runs through Central and Wanchai terminates at Shaukeiwan. We took it back to Central (cost $HK2.30) on our Octopus card, and really enjoyed the sights as the old tram trundles back (heading for Kennedy Town) get a frront upper deck seat if you can. You can get off at Waanchai, or Central opposite the Star Ferry terminal so it's very convenient, and slow ! A trip to Shaukeiwan will show you that HK is much more than the Star Ferry, tailors and annoying touts. Allocate a morning that you won't regret

A blast from the past

As far as I know, this is the only double-decker tram network still remaining in the world. It is always crowded, slow and noisy. BUT it should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. If you are fit enough to climb to the top deck then you get an unparalleled view of the real Hong Kong.

Where else can you get a city tour for.35 cents (US)

I LOVE this! The tram can get quite crowded... so it might be an idea to go to where it starts a line (or finishes) and get on early.... head straight upstairs... grab a window seat and watch the city go by!

An interesting way to see Hong Kong Island

Firstly, don't use this if you actually want to get somewhere. It stops very often and is an incredibly slow method of transport. Get the MTR if you want to get around and visit places. That said, this is a good way to see Hong Kong city. From a seat on the top deck you get a good vantage point into the hustle and bustle of this busy city. It may be slow but the atmosphere and insight are well worth the small fee. We got an Octopus card. $50 deposit and $100 credit, the deposit and unused credit are refunded when you hand it back in. Using the card has two benefits, slightly reduced fares and instant payments. It can be used for the tram, MTR, peak tram, Star Ferry and in many small convenience shops and cafes. Very handy!

Nice affordable ride. Should try it

Nice experience with very low price (2.30 hk $ adult, 1.20 hk $ child). You get on mainly through the rear door and you must get off at the front door. Pay with Octopus card or exact change (for a group you can the sum by coins) It is a tourist attraction as well as an affordable means of transport for locals. It can get very crowded if get on it mid route. If you want to enjoy it as a tourist you should ride at the start of the route e. g Kennedy town and get off at about north point. Make sure to read where the tram is going to on the display on the front of the tram it usually diplays the final distanation. The tram has also a good website but the interactive map is kinda difficult to handle on a mobile.

Great way to see HK

Cheap and cheerful rickety and fun. Bring your camera and correct change 2.30 HK or use octopus card? They go East to west and back again.

Worth a ride

Allows us to have some sigthseing without walking and then to spot where we wanted to come back to shop. Well organize, clean just prepare small change to pay the ride.

Fun and easy way to see some of HK island

Liked - good view of the action, traffic, and people; avoiding the heat; cheap; well-signed. Disliked - busy (but just wait for a seat).

So much fun way of transportation!

I really enjoyed taking the tramways at the island, a great way of transportation thru the city, cheap, clean and efficient. This is a great way to see the city, a great combination of old style transportation with the modernism!

Experience Old Hong Kong

We love the Ding Ding trams - they are old, they rattle, there's no air conditioning and you won't have a more authentic old style Hong Kong experience. The trolleys were once the primary transportation option and a ride will bring you a great opportunity to take photos from the centre of the street, see local Hong Kongers going about their business and experience a slow ride through what is normally a very busy city. The trams are also practical as you can travel easily within of the city centre and they provide a bit of relief from the heat, especially in the middle of the day. Much like other trams or cable cars in other citys, the Ding Dings are a way to enjoy a relaxing view (as a tourist) or get from one part of Hong Kong to another without the rushed atmosphere of the MTR.

Slow, but awesome!

Take the ding ding from Sheung Wan to Causeway Bay for a great slice of HK life. Try it get the front seat on the upper deck

Good Experience1

2.7 HKD per ride per person. Cheapest on the island so far. It was abit slow moving thus why you can enjoy the beauty of this busy Hong Kong City and its high rise buildings.

2015-05-06 13:53:17

must try

ding ding is slow but it is one of the oldest transit in hong kong. it has no air con so it could be hot in the day time. suggest trying it at night, and you will get to see the beautiful lights in hong kong.

I love this ride

This is a great experience not to be missed while visiting Central Hong Kong. Try to get a seat in front on the upper deck. You could reach out and touch a passing tram, but don't. It's a good way to get back and forth in central Hong kong and a great way to see the hustle and bustle, traffic, people, buildings along the way. Every trip to Hong Kong, I like to ride it from end to end. The cost is about $2.30HKD (about $0.30US).
