Cheap Youth Hostel. Crappy ski hill

I have written this in 2 sectuons. Firstly the ski hill area.. then scroll down the page to read about youth hostel. Ski Area: Worst ski resort ive been in the world. I guess i could have been unlucky, bit i arrived at the beginning of feb (supposed to be best snowfall time) and no snow had fallen for over a week and zero snow forecast for the next 2 weeks. The slopes were hard as concrete. I am at an advanced level and still had some amount of fun when the sun was out, but overall it is dangerous especially for learners who will hit the hard ground and get hurt. I have been to mountains all over canada, usa, new zealand and japan. This one was the worst conditions ive ever seen. I stayed for 1 week and got 3 days of snowboarding in (one day was a free promo). It just wasnt worth paying the money for this terrible ski hill. Also they tend to rope off alot of areas even if there is enough snow so u are forced to go down the narrow boring pistes. On a plus side, the youth hostel was cheap and very warm and comfortable. Several food options around are low cost and the staff at the foreigners info center are incredible friendly and helpful. We became friends and hung out (much more fun than the crappy ski area). Please dont expect soft snow here, ur better off flying to japan which was incredible. Youth Hostel : Very cheap (11, 000₩ for a dorm bed - approx $9usd). Warm rooms. Very comfy beds. Super close walking distance across to ski slope. Friendly staff. Free laundry machine. It would have gotten 5 stars apart from 1. The huge kitchen is great apart from zero cookers or plates or cutlery is provided... u are supposed to travel with your own! Crazy... 2. They dont take reservations, its potluck if u show up and beds available. During weekdays this is easy. Weekends forget about it. So u are potentially going to be stuck with no bed and have to pay $300usd at the 5 star hotel opposite or try and get back to seoul if u arrived early enough and lucky that buses are still running. My friend arrived Saturday, no bed available and spent hours by taxi etc around nearby town eventually finding at 1am a sauna with a floor to sleep on. The hostel is good but should be much better organized and run better.

Budget ski trip!

Understand that there were not much information about Yongpyong, and it is so hard to contact the Yongpyong reservation team, i have decided to write an essay about it! haha! First i have dropped them several emails but no replies at all, also knowing a phone call wouldnt help as practically no one speaks english there! here's a tip, i have found a ski agent on one of the tripadvisor forum, it is called Winter friend, they have all sorts of package which cater to your budget and needs, from hotel pick up, bus ticket, accommodation, ski suit rental to ski pass, absolutely convenient! You can visit their website at Winterfriend.com. They are so helpful and patient with me since i asked them to revise the package price for my stay several times since i was downright cheapskate and wanted a beautiful winter getaway! Please see some tips :- TRANSFER TO YONGPYONG I was glad that i went through Winterfriend, so i had someone to pick me up from my backpackers place in Myeongdong, when we arrived Lotte World (Jamsil), we waited for a short while till the bus came, there are a few buses leaving to Yongpyong but we have already sorted out the bus ticket when placing a booking through the agent. Once the bus arrive, please remember that there will be loads of people crowding at the baggage loading area, if you are travelling in 2 or more, please get another person to reserve the seats on the bus when you are loading the luggages, the bus ticket has no seat number on it. i had a hard time and didnt manage to get any seat on the first attempt and had to unload my luggages (which is pushed inside the loading area). ive learnt that koreans do not queue up! After 2 and half hours journey, you should arrive Yongpyong area. DO get off on the first stop @ Dragon Valley Tower where its a parking area for buses, nobody announced in english so we actually got off the second stop at Alpensia and had to take a shuttle bus back to Dragon Valley Tower, i was lucky that i only had to wait 15minutes since the frequency of shuttle bus after the one i took is about 1 to 2 hours! ACCOMMODATION Once i got off at Dragon Valley Resort, i went 1 huge round to look for the youth hostel, but in fact the youth hostel is right across the Dragon Valley Tower itself. Basically the property is basic, no lifts, no porter, so it is advised that you pack light or get a room somewhere on the first floor (i had my room at third floor so i bet you can already imagine my pain!). They have 02 types of accommodation available, the capsule room (single claustrophobic cubicle) which is based on first come first served basis and the Ondol room (heated flooring private room) where you can book it way before. I got myself the ondol since i wanted more privacy, the room is pretty decent, it comes with a wardrobe where the mattresses will be), a television, a full length mirror. SHARED BATHROOM The shared toilet is pretty eerie if you are alone, and the fact that you have to share the shower since its public, so it would be really awkward if other guests are in there. so i'd recommend you to use the shower at 9pm onwards, so far i've never met anyone at that timing before! DINING Dining is fairly pricey ranging from 7, 000 WON and above, if it is over your budget, you can always buy groceries from the Family Mart (located at Dragon Valley Tower) then return to the hostel kitchen to cook, but of course with a minimal pots and pan rental fee that cost about 1, 000 to 2, 000 WON! You can dine in Dragon Valley Tower or the building where ski lockers and rentals are located. SLEEP Also since it is a Youth hostel, there will be loads of korean teenagers (especially boys) in the hostel, and they would make lotsa noises at night, please prepare ear plugs for a good night sleep. VOUCHER Upon check-in at the hostel, the receptionist would hand you some discount vouchers, mainly discounts for ski pass, ski lifts, ski rental, sauna etc. As far as i remember, the vouchers are 30% discounts for earlier mentioned items / services! WHAT TO DO Besides skiing, there are sauna service which i didnt have the time to try, other than that there is a cable car ski lift service for skiers to reach the Dragon Peak (highest peak), but you can do joy rides too, beautiful scenaries up there! TRANSFER BACK TO SEOUL I booked the 1300hrs bus back to Seoul, i checked-out pretty early and left my luggages at the receptionist, it feels pretty safe, just have your belongings locked, Please be at the bus counter at least 30 minutes before, the bus counter is located nearby the Family mart, towards the left side next to the lift. Please constantly remind / annoy the counter staff that so that they will remember to lead you to the bus that you are supposed to hop on. It was really effective as i was the first to get on the bus and reserve my seats. Same advise again, nobodys going to queue up and say " after you ", i even heard some americans complaining about manners of queueing up. At the end there were several travellers who need to separate to be on difference buses since there werent enough seats for them. The bus will return to Jamsil Lotte World.
