Worst Service & Food - Never Experienced Anything This Horrible

This Cafe is absolutely horrible, The worst service ever and disgusting, inedible food. Waited 40 minutes to get seated. The waited 15 minutes more for a server - none came to our table. Tired of waiting, I waved my hand in the air to get ta server to bring us water. Waited another 10 minutes; waved my hand in the air again to get a server to take our order. Waited another 5 minutes for a server to come over. Waited another 15 - 20 minutes for our order to arrive. My boyfriend got his breakfast. I only got my toast waited another 5 minutes for my breakfast which was completely burnt = more than burnt completely dry and desiccated. I motioned the server over; told her that my breakfast was inedible. I was asked if I wanted them to fix me another. I said no. We asked for the check, waiting another 5 minutes for it. The server came back 5 - 10 minutes later and said that we would not be charged. Don't go to this restaurant. It's the worst ever - bad service and disgusting completely burnt food. Can't believe that they served it to me.

Yummy eats near the beach

Super cute. We sat outside in gorgeous weather and had delicious bacon and eggs and Mexican omelet. We recommend it highly!

pass

They got my order wrong -bacon eggs w / hash browns and biscuit. I was served a Mexican (?) omelet scrambled with mystery meat (no bacon) and a heap of hash browns. The biscuit was good but even the jam was bland. No flavor.

dirty but amazing food- worth the wait

For sure an above average diner, but there were some flaws. The property was a bit dirty (walls) but other than that very good place. Best sausages and french toast I ever ate.

Great food in a funky atmosphere, but premises appear messy.

We ate here on our last visit and enjoyed the food and were seated inside. This time we chose outdoor seating. The fish taco was fresh and delicious and a large portion. The fish and chips were good, but overly breaded. The portion was generous. This is a busy place so bring your patience. One negative is that the outdoor seating around the restaurant seems dirty and a bit chaotic. I used the bathroom which is approached outside from a side of the building and was appalled at the mess around it and in it.

Good breakfast food

Had to wait 30 minutes to eat. They had a seating area in the shade while we waited which was helpful. We sat on the patio for breakfast. The patio was a portion of the sidewalk that had been blocked off. They had some shades on the patio structure to block the sun beating on you while you ate which is needed in the California heat. Had the French toast, breakfast potatoes and fruit.

Good Food

I have two rules for choosing a restaurant. Actually dozens, but only two that are applicable to this conversation. 1. Any place that calls themselves World Famous is to be avoided; and 2. A good restaurant has both Crystal and Tabasco hot sauce on the table (at least back south anyway). If they're really classy they'll have a bottle of pepper sauce too. Esau's Cafe brags that they are World Famous since 1939. They also have Tabasco, Tapatio, and Cholula on the table (good alternatives to Crystal on the Left Coast). These are contradictory signs and I wasn't sure what to think. I was greeted with huge portions of good, fresh food. The biscuit was gigantic. Their New Orleans Scramble wasn't bad (especially with Tabasco), and the home fries were perfect. The Breakfast Burrito was devoured by my better half. Well, only half devoured. It was huge! The staff was very friendly. Service was a little slow, but it was packed and the waitresses appeared to be overworked. The place is pricey, but not out of line for the area and location near the beach.

gone downhill

stopped by for breakfast for the first time in six months and came away very disappointed. Esau's is a local legend and has never disappointed in the past. I only go there for breakfast which is pretty difficult to mess up. Firstly my poached egg order came fried, the coffee was barely warm and the potatoes were under cooked and tasted of overused oil. i don't know if the establishment has changed ownership but i definitely hit it on a bad day.

Terrific family breakfast

Came with another family, so 4 kids and 4 adults. They accommodated us (even with COVID precautions) quickly-no wait, amazingly for a Sunday morning. Between us, we ordered corned beef hash, a relleno omelet, huevos rancheros, and several variations on pancake combos. All the food was delicious and fresh, and serving sizes are very generous. Will most definitely return next time we are in Carpinteria.

A Local Seashell Gem Called Esau's

Esau's Coffee Shop is surely a seashell gem just a few feet from the sand at Carpinteria State Beach. It has to be, hands down, one of the BEST breakfast joints in town. The owners are onsite and as friendly as can be and even know their local guests names. Their staff exudes the same personable qualities too. Food is delicious. Coffee shop is clean. Esau's has always been a local favorite and simply carptastic!

Great little restaurant

Went to visit my niece so we all went to lunch there. The food is great. Fast service. It's a very mom and pop kind of place. Like eating at home.

Great Breakfast

We were in the area for a wedding and came by Esau's the first morning had great service and a great breakfast, our kids stayed with us the next night and we decided to bring them back the next day for breakfast we liked it so much! Also close to the beach so you can go on a nice walk when you are feeling stuffed from the good food

Good lunch at Esau's

My son and I stopped in for lunch at Esau's recently. He ordered the huevos rancheros and I had the special grilled cheese with tomato and avocado. He is normally a slow eater but cleaned his plate very quickly. I really enjoyed my swiss cheese sandwich with a side of fries. Not very busy, kitchen a tad slow but I was pleased with the food. Will definitely eat here again.

Eau cafe Carpenteria, CA

Great food! All home made... delicious! Family and pet friendly. A short walk to the beach. Service was good.

Been Around

The menu of Esau's tells the history of this cafe, and it's been around for a long time. Unfortunately I think restaurants will rest on their laurels when they need to progress, and Esau's seems to be doing that. This is a diner with the look of a diner. There are vinyl booths all around although there is also outdoor seating. When we came in the sign said seat yourself. We did. No one then approached us for about 5 minutes. A, " Be with you in a minute, " would have at least acknowledged our presence. My wife and I both ordered scrambles. My Joe's scramble was good except there was so much butter. My home fries seemed scraped off the bottom of the pan. They were just shy of being burned. There also didn't seem to be any seasoning on them. I had a huge biscuit with my scramble. It was on the dry side rather than light and fluffy, and the jam in a paper cup seemed dried up after sitting out too long. Most people today prefer food that is fresh and with less butter or oil. Esau's seems to be using recipes from a bygone era. While some people like that, I would prefer a more healthy menu, even for breakfast.

OK food but expensive and got my order wrong

I was recommended to try this great local place for breakfast and it surely looked the part. Nice down-home diner with orange booth seats and a good buzz going on at 7.30am. I was served by Maria who was lovely. This place is probably good for most folks most of the time. But I honestly found it very expensive and they got my order wrong. For bacon, eggs, sausage and home fries with toast I paid $14 plus tip which is a lot for breakfast anywhere. When I got back to my hotel (silly me for not looking in the bag first) I had a container literally full of potatoes - I wish I was joking. There were a few bits of bacon on top and a couple of terrific eggs underneath. But it was 90% potatoes, I still can't figure out why they would do that. But no sausage and one (small) piece of toast on the side. It all tasted pretty good and I ploughed through as many home fries as a body could manage, but I was disappointed by the whole experience. It always sucks when they get your order wrong and how difficult should it be to order breakfast? No sausage, too bad. I don't mind paying a decent amount for my favourite meal of the day, but in this case the basic " Two Eggs & Sides " at $8.95 on the menu (meaning eggs plus potatoes and toast which they said was included) worked up to $13.96 just by adding bacon and sausage. Oh well, so I ended up $16 lighter and I had half a breakfast. I really wanted to like this place as it's some sort of local institution but I won't be going back.

Good salads

Stopped by here for lunch while waiting for our rental condo to be ready. We ordered the Caesar and Cobb salads. Both good and the service friendly. Will have to try breakfast there sometime later during our stay.

2019-04-01 15:56:22

Best pancakes ever

This super cool place, full of surfer memorabilia serves the best pancakes I've ever had. The bags fish tacos were great too.

Big Food & Great Servoce

This is THE place to go for breakfast in Carp if your hungry. Think plate-sized sticky buns, crazy large entrees and solid coffee. The service is always friendly. Expect a line at this Carp institution.

I really shoukd not be telling you but these people asked my son years ago to take photos of their son and then never paid them They posted his photos all over of their son surfing in their business Tried to call but avoided me years ago makes me mad Food medicre

Great breakfast, service but terrible truck noise

We both had the chili relleno omelet with both green and red sauce. The red sauce was unbelievably good. I wish the relleno pepper was bigger. Big biscuit served with jam. Service great. Just noisy dump trucks full of drainage dish waste driving by every few minutes the whole time.

2019-01-29 12:32:27

Enough to share

Breakfast and comfort food choices abound. Patty melt was really good and large enough to be shared. Staff is genuine.

2018-11-12 18:35:59

quality seems to have gone down a little

have eaten here many many times, and always enjoyed it. Today, one of us got practically burned hash browns, and the other got almost undercooked hashed browns. My pancakes were tough, so much so, that i only managed to choke one down. 3 meals came out, and 4th had to wait. sadly, just not a good experience. Seemed a little pricey on the drinks as well.

2018-10-30 21:01:48

Nice Lunch

Really impressed with my BLAT. Since this town is known for avocados it was a great compliment to a big fat Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich and side Caesar. We sat on a small patio beside the restaurant and watched some pretty impressive looking plates go down on tables beside us. It's a huge menu. Reasonable prices though. My lunch special came in at just over 10 dollars.

2018-10-23 12:36:54

Delicious!!!

Super excited about finding The new stop for food along our PCH route. My Dad and I are here, and the food is absolutely amazing. Service was top-notch, and makes definitely enjoyed the Chile Relleno omelet and locally baked sourdough bread. Definitely deserves a stop in. Been in business since 1939, and know a thing or two about breakfast. Have b'fast here... you'll be glad you did!

Oh, rats..

Sadly, each visit to this once proud diner gets worse and worse. However, in Carp there are few choices for breakfast so we have continued the decades long family tradition of eating here when in town. The food is average and inconsistent from day to day. You can order the same thing three days in a row and it never comes out the same. So, again there being limited places in Carp you just deal with it, at least until... you start seeing rats. Yep, rats. I saw a very large rat run through the dining area and back towards the kitchen. My mother-in-law swears she felt it run across her feet. We mentioned to the server who then told the owner. His reaction: " You the table that thinks you saw something? Yeah, the rats live in the trees and we keep the doors open so not much we can do ". Here's a hint: close the freaking doors! No apology, no look of surprise or horror, nothing. Just the same reaction as if we had asked for more coffee. Needless to say, our stomachs collectively turned and nobody finished their meal while we wondered what the rats do between the time the place closes after lunch until the time they open the next day. Do the rats have a dance party on the tables? Do they frolic on the open silverware trays? Do they play a game of tag while climbing in and out of each empty coffee cup that sits prepped for the next day's customer? My take-away based upon the (lack of) reaction by the owner is that the place knows they have a rat problem and they don't care. Thus, after many years, I don't care to return.

Good, hearty breakfast!

My wife and I have made Esau's our Carpinteria breakfast place. The staff is friendly and the food is great. A perfect way to start a laid back beach day!

2018-08-20 20:24:43

Holy cow! Look at the size of that ham steak!

This must be THE place for breakfast in town judging from the line waiting to get in. And it didn't disappoint. Friendly wait staff, quick service, good cup of joe, and good sized servings for the money. Looking forward to coming back.

2018-08-20 14:56:53

Great breakfast and lunch restaurant

Esau's is a warm and friendly family and friends dining experience. The restaurant has a surfing theme and silent surfer videos play continuously on two TV screens. The restaurant has comfortable inside booths and outside patio dining. As locals, we eat breakfast here several times a month. My favorites are Arti's Scramble and the Salmon and Lox scramble as well as the Mediterranean breakfast special. Most breakfasts come with a choice of hash browns, home style potatoes or a cup of fruit in addition to a choice of toast, English muffins or buttermilk biscuit. The menu is extensive and the food is plentiful for a good price. The atmosphere is lively with conversation. The wait staff is knowledgeable and the service is usually quick.

Exactly the breakfast joint I've always been searching for !

Too bad Esau's is on the other side of the the globe from home !! Loved absolutely everything aabout Esau's restaurant. The orange Naugahyde booths, Formica counter tops, super efficient college girl waitresses, cool beachy neighborhood vibe and of course the wonderful varied copious breakfast menu. The food was excellent they have everything you could want and homefries as well as hash browns and both 5 Star ! They went above and beyond to accommodate the vegan in our group. I'll admit it.. I'm a huge Esau's fan (and apparently so are Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher who were there too having a low key breakfast with the kids)

2018-08-18 17:16:21

Watch Out for the Cinnamon Buns!

This friendly cafe deserves all the glowing reviews. Our breakfast was delicious, with plenty of first-rate coffee. Someone in our group insisted on having one of the famous warm frosted cinnamon buns as a dessert after a huge pile of eggs & hash. It was so good he managed to eat it all. Silver dollar pancakes were great and omelettes were just as requested.

2018-05-24 17:32:04

Does what it says on the tin!

Helen, Amie and I called in for lunch recently. This is a genuinely honest place, staff are great, food is plentiful and there are no pretensions. If you are looking for generous portions of honestly presented food then search no further! We tried a quesadilla, a salad and fully loaded nachos. All good, solid dishes with great flavour and big portions. Go hungry!

2018-05-01 23:09:21

Worked for me

Had breakfast here with the wife on a recent trip to Carpinteria, because my favorite breakfast place in Carpinteria, Cajun Kitchen, is gone. These guys do a pretty good job. The portions are good sized and the food is reasonably tasty.

2018-04-24 23:11:22

Best Breakfast in the world!!

If I drive within, 20 miles of Esau's, I go to Esau's! I'm not joking they have the best breakfast in the world. It's not just like some place like " oh they have the best Denver omelet " !! NO! Not even close, the level of breakfast is what I like to think things compiled from a kitchen that used to make a really good Denver omelet then said " what if we took this and just made it a thousand times better " then they gave us the roasted passilo Chile relleno omelet and the heavens opened up and all was good on the earth. Now they do have all thee usual suspects as far as omelets go but look for the specials on the walls that's where you want to go they are all wonderful creations of decadence and love great coffee great corn beef hash great scrambles and Benedict's atmosphere is old school surf diner service is great food is amazing if you don't love it here you are incapable of love.. Enjoy

Traditional Breakfast

Esau's has a fantastic history and are food was good. I had a bacon omelette with Monterrey jack cheese garnished with guacamole and sour cream. A health portion of hash browns. The server asked if we wanted them regular or crispy, we said regular, they came out crispy. My husband got a biscuit with the meal & we ordered a side of country gravy which he said was good. Loved the coffee, cute spot, traditional breakfast selections. Would go again to try something else.

2018-03-26 21:40:56

Normally have breakfast here. Turns out lunch is good too!

Restaurant has a casual beach vibe, just perfect for Carpinteria. Have had breakfast here with several different groups of friends, and no one has ever been disappointed. Stopped by for lunch today with my mom. Had an awesome burger (mushrooms, bacon, avocado & cheese) and sweet potato fries (no upcharge for the fries). Hamburger was huge, and i wasn't even able to finish the half I had planned on eating. My mom liked her chicken sandwich and regular fries. Service is always friendly.

2018-03-04 20:02:21

Very much a family dinner

This is probably the most common place I eat in town. It is a breakfast and lunch spot. Very friendly, you get to know the family if you come often. Generous portions, good solid food. They are the most accommodating of special diets I have found in town. The salads are so generous that the half is usually enough. The breakfast dishes are filling and tasty. The gnarly scramble is one of my favorites with sweet potato fries. A great place to chill on your vacation morning in Carpinteria.

2018-01-02 15:02:18

Average Breakfast at high prices

We stopped in Esau's to have breakfast and it was an average experience for an unusualy high priced..$3.25 for an average tasting cup of coffee. Busy place and must be popular based on 4.5 star review. It is near the beach and within walking distance. The food was nothing to write home about.

2017-12-26 21:50:42

Bad experience

Good food but consider eating indoors. Dog walkers on sidewalks let their huge dogs jump on you and drool on you while you try to eat. Owners side with dog owners over their own customers' rights.

2017-11-08 13:22:02

Fun and Funky

Low key, surfer themed place to eat a great breakfast. Eat inside or out. This is a very popular place for good reasons.

2017-10-15 12:29:36

Could Easily Be a Three Star Review

I've loved this place forever and during our annual weeklong stay in Carpinteria, we always eat here multiple times. This past week, we ate here four times for breakfast and I have to say, the service gets more spotty every year. The food was also inconsistent this year depending on who was in the kitchen. If the owners aren't there, things are questionable. The flavors are all decent with one exception (not a fan of their version of heuvos rancheros) but you never know what to expect as far as quantity, how things are cooked, prepared, etc. Sometimes the hash browns are hardly browned, sometimes they are really crispy / overcooked, sometimes you get more than one person could possibly eat, sometimes, a child's portion, same thing with the home fries (which also came out cold twice), sometimes you get two pieces of toast, sometimes one, sometimes the omelets that include avocado come with slices, sometimes they are served with a cup of unseasoned guacamole on top, you just never know what to expect. Service outside of the busboy " Chris " (who was fantastic) is pretty crappy. Orders get screwed up, servers disappear for long stretches, etc. Some days the pancakes were perfectly cooked, some days they were so overdone as to not really be all that good. This is really a 3.5 star place, I can't rate it a four, even though I really want to.

2017-10-12 00:08:13

Breakfast in America 🇺🇸

Variert meny - koselig atmosfære - hyggelig betjening - gikk for lunsj på samme sted og Cesar salat - for mye dressing etter min smak. Ligger nært strand.

2017-10-09 22:42:33

Loved my choco-chip and coconut pancakes!

My husband was jonesing for some blueberry pancakes; the kind with the berries mixed in the batter rather than a compote on top. Esau's was just the place. I enjoyed the chocolate chip / coconut pancakes; pretty sweet but a nice occasional treat. The setting is very old-school, small town, diner but the menu has quite a variety of choices. The servers were a bit slow on the coffee refills, considering it was very early and most tables were empty but overall, it was a good breakfast experience (and we are not huge breakfast eaters)..

2017-09-19 23:44:08

Authentic food and atmosphere

This place has the best red rounded seats you expect in a diner. The staff is friendly and professional and provide the service with a smile. The food is very good: not haute cuisine but something your mum could have made. Best experience on this street.

2017-08-31 20:11:57

Great brunch

Drove to Carpenteria for the first time on Wednesday and wanted to find a good place for breakfast, which we did and sat out on the side terrace enjoying the sunshine. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and we ordered the corn beef hash and eggs with country fries and toast. It was delicious and enjoyed every mouthful. Would certainly visit again if I'm in the area. Thank you

2017-08-14 19:24:17

Had breakfast with 16 of my family members!

LOTS of choices. Make sure you read the specials signs posted around the restaurant. LARGE servings. Most of the breakfast choices are enough for 2 people. Service was quick and friendly, even though we were a very large group. Everyone enjoyed the food. Highlights were the biscuits and gravy, banana walnut pancakes and breakfast burritos. Nothing gourmet, just plain, good food (and lots of it).

2017-06-19 18:10:54

Nice quick breakfast

Went looking for coffee and stumbled on this coffee shop. decided to sit at the counter and shared a breakfast burrito and cinnamon roll. Wow were they good! Good service and friendly waitresses!

2017-05-31 12:56:55

Poor service and behaver

Outside tables lefted unbussed, birds all over old food, health code violations. Allowing therapy dogs inside areas of eatery, another violation. Only service dogs with service vests are allowed inside eatery areas, as stated by Santa Barbara County health and safety codes. Handicap restroom is in violation, needs 42 " entrance. Bad service as well as bad attitude towards us. Don't worry, I will not be back!

2017-05-18 08:45:43

Good food, Good service

A nice little diner. They gave generous portions and our breakfasts were all tasty - especially the Huevos special. Even the coffee was good.

2017-04-09 22:39:51

The traditional American diner

Great American breakfast in a proper American Diner. Extensive menu choice for breakfast and good friendly service with regular coffee refills. Was very busy and portions generous. The only complaint was that the smoked salmon with the scrambled eggs was super salty.

2017-02-13 17:06:37

Food great, service not so much

We have been to Esau's twice for breakfast. Both times the food was outstanding, both times the service was just so so. EXCEPT for the the bus boys who provide drinks and additional service besides food - they were great!

2017-02-08 04:38:43

Best Breakfast

This place felt like a real American diner, just like from the films! We had a fabulous breakfast here in this lovely little seaside town. I would love to visit here again in the sunshine! it was pouring with rain on our visit. The place, food, and staff were really fantastic.

2017-01-16 23:28:20

It was just okay. Our server seemed completely distracted

Went for breakfast the morning we arrived at Carpenteria. I've ate here a number of places and I really do normally enjoy it. This time, though, the lack of attention from the waiter really soured the occasion. It wasn't very busy or I could certainly excuse waiting nearly 15 minutes from sitting to someone asking if we would like something to drink.

2017-01-04 17:32:41

Best Eggs Benedict Ever!

We stopped here for breakfast on our way out of town. This place is friendly and fun! A large selection of items for breakfast. I had the eggs benedict, sis had burrito combo. Both were amazingly good! The hollandaise sauce is fresh and home-made, delish! Good coffee too! Friendly service, good food - a must for anyone visiting Carpenteria!

2016-11-11 16:51:35

Two great meals

We visited here with several members of our family, everyone had something different and everyone was pleased. Good food and good service. My husband and I returned for a breakfast on the day we were going out of town. Just as good as the first time.

2016-11-01 17:21:42

Once and once only

Over priced breakfast / lunch dive. What else can I say. Eggs came out under cooked. Potatoes were bad. I would not recommend to anyone

2016-06-17 21:34:26

Traveling through and needed brunch

Found this after we turned off Route 1, oh and so glad we did. Menu fabulous, all ordered breakfast / brunch and was not disappointed. My pancakes with walnuts and apple, wonderful, my friend had the pancakes and blueberries and also agrees excellent. This is well worth a visit, love the old style diner inside.

2016-02-17 13:45:26

Good Eats!

Esau's is an unpretentious, hole-in-the-wall diner a couple of blocks from the beach. It has booths, a counter with stools, and a narrow outdoor dining area with a few tables and a nice ocean mural painted on one wall. Inside, the walls offer great surfing photos, some of which look historic. The overall atmosphere is beachy kitsch. But don't go for the atmosphere; go for the food! We stopped there late morning and decided to share an omelet. We ordered one with " everything " : ham, bacon, sausage, onions, and I forget what else, but we were glad we had decided to share. The omelet was huge and came with potatoes and a choice of bread. We chose the biscuit, and were rewarded with one of the best biscuits we've ever eaten: big, fluffy, golden-brown, and light. AND it was served with homemade boysenberry jam. I will go back just for the biscuit!! The omelet was good, too! We look forward to trying some of Esau's other menu choices.

2014-12-15 15:01:12

Breakfasts / lunch

Enjoyed a nice breakfast-lunch! I had the western bacon burger with onion rings and it's so big u can split it! The eggs Benedict was excellent! The chicken fried steak was just ok. The gravy tasted a little too floury so the guess was the gravy wasn't cooked enough. Good food! Great service!

2014-08-05 14:44:42

Great breakfast!

Friendly people!! Service was top-class. Lovely tasty food with large portions!! The pancakes were huge and very flavorful. Good breakfast deals before 830am.

2015-01-19 21:54:35

Excellent food !

I like everything including the waitress Sara! We all met for breakfast for both mornings and she was a sheer delight! The food is excellent and our group will surely visit there again.

Excellent breakfast

My husband and I enjoyed our breakfast so much we went two days in a row. They have really good scrambles with a variety of choices. My husband had the Loco Moco both days which is rice with grilled onions and brown gravy, and two hamburger patties topped with scrambled eggs. My meal was so large I could easily have shared it. The biscuits are huge and gravy delicious. They make to go food for people that walk up from the beach. We would definitely go back to this restaurant again!

Great breakfast place, LARGE portions!

I could not resist " The Redneck ", homemade cornbread, sausage, eggs, gravy and grits. There were other specialties on the end that looked equally tempting but you could also just order the standard breakfast. Diner style with large booths, it was not what we expected from the exterior.

Put the pepper sauce on the fries - YUM!

Stopped in for the first time today, and had lunch. Friendly service, and a bustling dining room, puts this neighborhood diner in the " Oh this is cool " category when you walk in. I had the " panini " sandwich, which was a turkey, bacon, tomato, avocado and smoked gouda on grilled sourdough, with fries, and it was delicious. It was more of a toasted sourdough, no buttery outer like I was imagining, and the turkey cold cuts they used are very standard, but the smoked bacon and gouda really brought the flavor up to a respectable level. I still added black pepper like crazy to give it a little more zing. The fries were light in crunch and dark in color, I'd say among the best fries in town for sure. They had this pepper sauce on the table that I poured all over the fries instead of ketchup (there was none on my table) and it made the meal truly memorable. A little pricey to be honest, but I'm glad I went. I'll go back for breakfast sometime, I hear they make a mean eggs benny.

As usual the service was excellent and the food came up to expectations. This place never fails us and we have been going there for a long time and they have always given great service and an excellent menu.

Great hole-in-the-wall!!

Worth the stop!! Great food! (Tuna melt, BLTA, corn flakes french toast were super good!) Try french fries and onion rings! Close to the ocean, walk to the beach, by the train tracks. Not too much curb appeal, cute dated diner look. Super friendly waiters (all young guys) :) nice visit, great food!

Shocked

I visited ESAUS cafe just a few days ago. Because it was an old establishment and looked good from the outside. I ordered a breakfast with a squid steak and egg. I asked the waitress for a piece of pancake instead of muffin or bagel. She has not inform me for the additional charge. Long story short, the waitress was inattentive and the food long waiting. The steak was so hard to chew and I asked to see if they can replace a softer one. The waitress finally came out and she went inside. An old woman then came to my table and said it was a fresh steak and I should NOT have any problem. I decided not to argue with her and just ate the egg. When the bill came, I was shocked that they have charged $3.95 for a piece of so, so pancake. By the way, the dish did not provide any muffin, toast or bread. When I asked why, the waitress claimed she had said extra charge which wasn't clear in the first place. The older woman then jumped out and said something nasty. I was so exhausted by the long driving and did not want to engage in an energy consuming fight. I paid and left. I think they have taken advantage of traveler since I am not local. I feel this place is very dishonest and in total denial.

Great breakfast spot

Popped in for breakfast. There is a small outside terrace which is small but good for people watching. Food is made with good quality ingredients. Delicious bacon, fresh bagels and the choc chip pancakes were exceptional. Very good value too.

I was there this morning!

The Spanish omelet is my favorite. The salads are great, the sandwiches are fantastic. I've been here number of times and have always enjoyed great food and fantastic service.

Wonderful food - Great Location

I had lunch here recently and loved the ample salad portions and fresh produce. I had a grilled veggie salad with chicken that was just wonderful. It was crowded, so I sat at the counter ad enjoyed the retro diner feel. Great service too!

The best breakfast in Carp!

If you want a giant, delicious and old-fashioned breakfast.... this is the place! A local favorite for many years, it is the hot spot for the best breakfast in town... friendly, casual, easy... tons of food.. even hot biscuits and lots of local color... definitely worth a visit.

Great for brunch or breakfast

Traditional diner. Pancakes are superb, cooked to their original recipe. Lovely service too. Very welcoming.

Great place for breakfast and lunch

This is quite an informal local diner. The menu is large and varied and the food is great. We bought two lunches between four of us (two adults and two children) and it was enough for us all to share! Staff are very friendly and the whole place has a nice vibe.

Breakfast before the Avo Fest

Every year my wife and I go to Carpinteria for the Avocado Festival. We like to get there early for the best parking right on the beach This year we had breakfast at Esau's. Lovely little café, great friendly staff and great food. John & LynNita Ellis

Wonderful place for Breakfast!

Esau's was a great find for us. We were walking up and down the street trying to find a good breakfast place. The kids all voted for Esau's - I just wanted coffee! Instead I had their Chile Relleno Omelette - OMG - was it ever good! So delicious, I came back again the next day for more. The only down side for me, it was crowded inside, so we sat on the patio. They need to get tablecloths or something! Hide the old linoleum that's on the top. And if you're outside, the service is a little slow. But all in all, the food was delicious!!

Big Breakfasts!

They serve big breakfasts and have many to chose from! We like the crunchy French toast, the Arti's Verde enchiladas with eggs and their breakfast burritos are yummy. Good value.

Good place for breakfast, incredibly friendly

We had a really good breakfast here, they serve classic eggs, etc. Really good pancakes, and all sorts of inventive egg dishes and breakfast specials. Incredibly friendly service. I only gave it 4 stars because my sister in law got the teriyaki chicken (why, I have no idea!), but still it was an abomination of white rice, gooey sauce and a huge inexplicable chunk of grilled pineapple. Steer clear of the oddball order like that and you will have a great experience here.
