Experience the artwork of local artist William deGarthe who, born in Finland, moved to Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia claiming it to be the most beautiful place on earth. Donated by Agnes deGarthe, over 75 paintings and sculptures are on display at the gallery connecting to deGarthe's former home in Peggy's Cove. deGarthe's paintings depict the life and beauty of Peggy's Cove and its surroundings.

Vraiment un très grand artiste
Cette galerie d'art expose différentes œuvres de l'artiste finno-canadien William Edward deGarthe (1907-1983), né Birger Edward Degerstedt à Kaskinen en Finlande et émigré au Canada en 1926. D'abord illustrateur, puis peintre et finalement sculpteur (à partir de 1962), deGarthe a vécu une grande partie de sa vie à Peggy's Cove, en Nouvelle-Écosse dans cette maison qui sert aujourd'hui de galerie d'art. Le beau monument aux pécheurs taillé dans l'affleurement de granit qui jouxte la galerie est son œuvre. La galerie était fermée au moment de notre passage. Heureusement, un site WEB nous permet d'admirer ses nombreuses productions, surtout des toiles où la thématique de la mer est omniprésente. Vraiment un très grand artiste.
Hit or miss opening
Famed for his " lasting monument to Nova Scotian fishermen " on a 100-foot-long granite outcropping situated behind his house in Peggy's Cove, deGarthe also has his studio here. William deGarthe was born in Finland and immigrated to Canada in 1926, and for many years he spent each spring and summer at Peggy's Cove. Since deGarthe is an artist, items featured in the gallery are a bit pricey but unique and enticing. Unfortunately, the prices were out of line with my travel budget. When part of a group tour at mid-day, the gallery was open, a definite hit☺

Have been many times to Peggy's Cove and only found the gallery open once. That one time was wonderful to see the work of Mr. deGarthe who was so talented. Wish I had bought something when his wife used to sell out of the fish shed on the Cove.
A hidden gem in Peggy's Cove
If you are an art buff, it's a place you need to see. The artist has carved a subject than did a painting of the same scene. I found this by accident many years ago while staying in Peggy's Cove. He also painted the church as well.
A wonderful tribute to a well-loved artist
The museum and the monument are wonderful tributes to one of Nova Scotia's best known marine artists. We really enjoyed our visit and the opportunity to view a few of the artists wonderful works. The young lady working at the centre deserves a special mention; she was very friendly and knowledgeable and her interaction with the other visitors was extremely positive.
Had to get a few gifts. This is the spot
Short story.. Inlaws regret not visiting Peggies Cove 30 years ago and my wife was bound and determined to not repeat that error. We really loved the village and lighthouse and wanted to get her mom something special.. the pewter is top shelf and the variety of quality artisans is evident after just a few minutes in this shop..
Great venue for a wonderful artist
We knew Mr. deGarthe and his wife personally and are very pleased to see a memorial to his work. Where better to have it the in the place he loved and was the inspiration for much of his work.
A marvel to see
While walking around the village, you might stumble upon this amazing art piece. It's just on the side of the road, with little fanfare. Take some time to read the history of the outdoor piece and look carefully at the humanity he carved. A nice surprise as I knew nothing about it.
A tribute to one mans talent
Worth stopping by to view this handcarved monument in a front yard. Read the informative plaques for the story, and spend a few moments in quiet reflection.
Wonderful paintings and sculptures
DeGarthe was a wonderful artist. The one thing that I have to say is that the staff could be more interactive and informative. But all in all good experience.
Okay, but an acquired taste
It was deathly quiet in the gallery. I don't think parents with noisy kids would feel very comfortable. The painting are certainly an acquired taste. A bit too crude in many respects. The sculptures were much better and worth a close look.

Definitely worth a look many beautiful works of art including many great sculptures. Small quaint old home converted into an art gallery. By donation only so stop in and see some great local art by a great Canadian artist.
