bad service and bad food
Arrived with a party of 6, few minutes ahead of reservation (2min) told not ready so forced to stand in hallway. I ordered the Calamari which arrive well after one else's had ben served. Have had this dish many times in my travels and even frozen from a grocery store. This was not only not " crispy " but chewed like bubble gum. Don' put items on menu you cannot cook!
Five stars for Foster's Inn
We just returned from what is hopefully the first of many visits to Stratford Ontario. Please go, book a room at Foster's Inn and dine there as well, and go to see " Something Rotten! ". The play is immensely entertaining, one of the best we have seen - ever. Foster's Inn offers a great location, nice room accommodations, very good food (we enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner) and exceptionally friendly staff. We highly recommend Foster's Inn.
Hope you like noise
First the good…friendly staff, very clean (though furniture is " tired "), and nice location. The bad…. The heating system is a joke. Rooms are very cold regardless of what temp the heat is set to and the fans sound like an 18-wheeler is idling in the room. And it wasn't just our room; another room was the same. Also, the hallways smell of smoke and with a 1 inch gap under the hotel room door, that smell (and sound too) gets in your room. Overall just okay but wouldn't repeat.
39 th anniversary
We decided to head up to Stratford to spend a night for our 39th anniversary at Fosters Inn with the " Hike and stay " package. The room while not 'fancy' was large, very clean, quiet and very comfortable. The main reason for us to stay here is the absolutely fantastic restaurant. We enjoyed 2 tenderloin steak dinners that were fabulous! Perfect medium cooked. Attentive service by our waiter. In the morning we enjoyed an excellent breakfast, eggs benny with Black Forest ham and a superb ham & cheese omelette. Second time we have eaten here and both times have been perfect. Highly recommend this place for any occasion.
a quality, reasonable inn
a very nice, friendly inn located a half block from Avon Theater downtown near numerous restaurants. super clean and comfortable. great breakfast choices are a la carte but the room prices are reasonable. I would definitely stay there again. and a great bar and restaurant.
Date night was a great night!
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and were looking for a new place to eat. Fosters Inn did not disappoint. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and very clean. The service was a bit slow but, we didn't mind. Our calamari appetizer was hot and crispy. My husband had the fried chicken and commented that 'it was the best he ever had'. My salmon was very good and had a wonderful selection of sauteed veggies. We would definitely go back and try the steak and other items on the menu, as everything that was coming out of the kitchen looked great. They also have a patio out front which looked very inviting. A great location for theatre goers as well.
Great Location ~ Great Nights Sleep
We picked this location because it was close to the Studio Theater and it looked unique compared to the usual accommodations. It was and we really enjoyed our stay! The building is old, there will be creaky floors and a bit of an echo, but it didn't hinder our sleep. If you are a light sleeper, this might not be true for you. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioner worked well and I loved the big windows that overlooked the main street. The only thing I would change would be a bathroom update. I'd love to see a simple tile shower instead of the plastic insert and cute little vanity to match the feel of the hotel and room. Bathroom was clean, but really blah. Parking is free, but it's a block away. If you have heavy luggage I'd try to snag a spot out front to check in and unload before parking. Staff always gave a hello and asked if we needed anything. We'd stay here again.
Terri went above and beyond!
My family and I reserved a room at Foster's for the night as we've become accustomed to their warm, friendly service. On the way from Toronto, we realized that we didn't have a dinner reservation and it was the Saturday of the long weekend! Bad news. We called Foster's and spoke to Kate who kindly told us we could try for seats at the bar. Around 6pm, we were just settling in to those very bar seats when Terri let us know they'd found a lovely table for us. From this cozy vantage point, we watched countless people walk in and try to get a table. After the bar was filled, they were turned away. Thank you Terri for going out of your way to make sure this family of 4 had a comfortable and enjoyable dinner! Well fed, we went on to Billy Elliot (an amazing production) and a good night sleep. Thanks Foster's!
Quaint, Comfortable and Friendly
Stayed for our anniversary weekend and loved the charm, friendly staff and great ambiance. The staff were incredibly helpful and really got got to know us and the other guests. The room was spacious, spotless and very comfortable. It was our first visit - definitely not our last!
Great place to stay!
We stayed at Foster's Inn for one night and it was great! Check-in was a breeze. Everyone who works there was pleasant and helpful. We were in room 204. It was very spacious and clean with comfortable beds and lovely decor. The bar fridge was very convenient. We had breakfast at the restaurant and I wholly recommended the Huevos Rancheros. You will want to finish it, although it is a huge portion. Soooo goood! I've always enjoyed the restaurant so just go, you won't be disappointed! Parking is at the cooper lot, but it is very safe so no need to worry. We will stay again!
Charm in a Modern fashion
Attending Stratford and a lovely evening of Modern SHAKESPEARE We had the pleasure of spending a night at the Foster's Inn Big room located right in the middle of the old city center, local to great restaurants and the charm of the shops. Excellent and the service checking in was seamless, you pick up the keys at the Inn / Pub Parking is a wee bit of a challenge but it is a part of the adventure. Great place and super nice people. Great place for a couples night out or weekend
What a Disappointment
My sisters and I visited Fosters inn Restaurant today and had a very disappointing experience. My sisters both had the open face Rueben and for starters it came out cold. When they spoke to Kate one of the servers she responded " That is not possible " and then she walked away. We were shocked! We have never had someone question our concerns about the quality of a meal. After that response my sister declined to have the meal reheated. When we spoke to another server he said " well we are busy. Everyone arrived for lunch at the same time ". He did take the meals to reheat them but brought them back basically looking nothing like a sandwich-just a pile of the ingredients. The reheating also resulted in rubbery toast, dry meat and gelatinous cheese. Not at all acceptable. Give Foster's a pass if you go to Stratford.
Overnight in Stratford, Ontario
The Inn exceeded my expectations. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was large with high ceilings and very nicely decorated. And the fact that there is an elevator in this century building is an added bonus. I would definitely stay here again.
Stratford Festival visit
Stayed two nights, October 2 and 3. Room was clean, comfortable, and quiet. Craig was an attentive and gracious host, from reservation placement to check-in to check-out. Excellent location. Short walk to Avon Theatre and downtown merchants. First floor restaurant / bar a welcome amenity. Breakfast and lunch were excellent (did not eat dinner, but will do so the next time). My wife and I will stay there again and recommend to others.
Quaint
This is a small boutique hotel in downtown Stratford, within walking distance of the theaters. Our room was large, very clean and provided everything we needed. There is a bar and small restaurant downstairs. We ate dinner and breakfast there and the food was very good.
Breakfast
Best huevo rancheros I have ever eaten. Lovely place, friendly staff, great food. I was told that the huevo rancheros were good but when I saw the rest of the menu I was torn. The eggs benny looked amazing. I'll get that next time. I'm glad I went for the huevo. A crisp tortilla stuffed full of home fries, cheese and bacon topped with salsa and sour cream. Perfection on a plate. The coffee was good too.
fries are outstanding
Had a great lunch post play today. Really good service and we had the chicken wrap, the burger and the grilled cheese with bacon. The burger was a little dry but other than that everything was delish. Funky decor, close to everything and as I said before, great service.
Just OK!
Quite busy with festival theatre crowd. Very noisy. Food was just ok. We have had better at Foster's. Crab cakes appetizer was pretty good. Roast salmon was pretty good and seafood linguine was tasty.
Plentiful breakfast!
we ordered the traditional breakfast item with choice of bacon, ham, sausage or peameal bacon. Portions of meat were generous and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Toast on the side was cut from a loaf and a pleasant change. Great value for a good meal, This is not your diner type breakfast!
Service is slow, not impressed with lunch
We booked reservation for lunch. We were seated immediately but it took almost 1 / 2 hour after we ordered our lunch before it came. The hash brown entree was not up to par. It was bland and it wasn't panned fried. The grilled veggie wrap was OK. You have to ask the wait staff for salt & ketchup. These items are not on the table and the ketchup comes in small portion cups like " McDonalds ". Also there's only 1 unisex washroom to serve the restaurant and bar patrons.
Great bistro for lunch
We enjoyed a leisurely lunch mid-week as we weren't in a rush to go to the theatre. Very good sized portions for the main salad plates. One of our group had the goat cheese and leek tart which she loved. My salmon Niçoise salad was too much to finish. We splurged and ordered a plates of frites with aioli dip to share which were amazing. Desserts are all made in house and the creme brûlée and potted lemon with berries were delicious. Service was a bit slow and from the time we arrived to being served our food took close to an hour. I realize it was busy due to the theatre matinee crowd, but we all ordered only salads and a daily special! Would still recommend but a little pricey- a salad, glass of wine and shared dessert still came to over $40 before tip.
Lunch bag let down
We dropped in for lunch before taking in a show at The Avon. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash.. Portion was generous but lacked flavour. Adding salt and pepper did little to make it tastier. Even adding some garlic aioli didn't help. Very disappointing.
Scrumptious Steak
Friendly modern comfortable atmosphere excellent service. Ordered steak - made exactly as ordered top quality and well presented. Fair price. Be sure to save room for fantastic deserts. Downtown near show and Avon theatre.
Lovely inn convenient to all theatres
Foster Inn was a great surprise. One block from the downtown. Walkable to all theatres, restaurants and shopping. Free parking two blocks from inn. Rooms are big and beautiful. Only drawback was Friday night band. Noisy til midnight. Could be a problem for those who go to bed right after theatre ends. All in all a good value and enjoyable. Breakfast not included.
Never Disappoints
I have eaten at Foster's 4 times while attending theatre right next door. The food is consistently tastes good, the selection is broad ranged and the prices are reasonable. I recommend Foster's Inn for any meal of the day.
Excellent
This was our second visit, in a month. We sat outside on the patio where the service was superb. Our server was knowledgeable, efficient and fun. I didn't get his name though. The chef changes the menu frequently and designs meals that are definitely pallet pleasing. We had the cucumber, melon and yogurt soup to start. It was served chilled and was a delight. Our main was the grilled cheese and fries, served on thick homemade bread and it was big enough to share. Dessert was lemon pudding and creme de brûlée. Absolutely fabulous. I recommend Foster's Inn.
Quaint yet wonderful in the heart of theater district
This updated inn manages to be quaint and offering amenities that you would expect in a brand new property. Each room is unique and I could not hear sounds from other rooms or the street. AC was nice and cold, and the shower was also updated. The people that staff the inn make you feel like you are guests in their home. The property also features a restaurant and is less than a block from the Avon Theater. I would definitely go back.
Light dinner great patio
Yummy burgers and Cobb salad. Wellington pints. Patio. Perfect stop on a hot Sunday afternoon. Great service. This is a go-to for us locals and one we easily recommend if asked by visitors. Good steaks too.
Want good service in the restaurant? Order alcohol!
Yes, we were going to the Avon Theatre so lunch before the performance. We had 90 minutes. We were seated at a table for 2... fine. We did not order alcoholic beverages as the performance was long and we did not want to fall asleep. We ordered water. The table beside us ordered lots of wine etc and got better service. We shared calamari and cobb salad. Asked for bread which never appeared yet the booze kept appearing at the table next to us! No one filled our small water glasses. We got up and filled them ourselves! When this was pointed out to our waiter on paying the bill the response was simply " sorry about that! " Rude and not acceptable. I feel sorry for the chef as the food was GREAT but the service was so lacking we will never eat there again.
Comfortable stay in a great location
We enjoyed our stay at Foster's; our room was comfortable with very high ceilings and a nice nook. The staff were always very helpful when we needed anything and the lounge was a great place for a post theatre nightcap. There's no guest parking on site, but there's a free municipal lot just down the street. In any case, the location was convenient for walking everywhere, so we parked our car and didn't go back to it until we checked out.
Welcoming inn
Hotel is 2nd and 3rd floor with their excellent dining on the ground level. One door leads to inside dining and other to reception. Our reservations were made online and check-in was friendly and quickest ever. Two keys in our hands and up we walked to our room on second floor. No worries, there is an elevator, but we needed steps. Our room was a single king overlooking the street. Beautiful room - simple, visually uncluttered and restfull. Mattress, pillows, bedding, towels were all quality. We found out at breakfast (which, by the way, was scrumptious), that the restaurant hosted a party of 30 and we heard nothing. Great night's rest. Need coffee in the morning.... Craig, the innkeeper has it ready downstairs. Need ice for drinks.... available at the bar. Need information about sights, just ask. Foster's location is ideal. It is just steps away from 2 theaters and about a 15 minute walk to the Festival Theater. Lots of shopping and dining and very safe for walking day and night. Parking in Stratford is dicey. Metered street parking is available and the parking lot is about a football field away between the Y and University. Parking is free and safe. Make sure you dine at Foster's during your stay... the excellence, training, and attention to detail continues.
Perfect option in an adorable town
The owners of Foster's Inn were so nice, accommodating, and welcoming. The rooms were clean and very pretty. We had rooms that had very high ceilings, a lot of character and very comfortable beds. Very impressed all around, but especially appreciated the excellent customer service.
Comfortable and convenient
This is a very convenient downtown location, just steps away from the Avon Theatre. There are two doors into Foster's Inn. The one on the right enters onto a staircase leading to the guestrooms. The left door enters the bar. The front desk for the hotel is just to the left of this entrance, inside the bar. For us, the check-in process was amazingly swift. They didn't ask me to sign anything nor to provide a credit card. I simply gave my name and I was given two keys to the room. My room was paid in advance, but I was still able to charge meals to the room even though I hadn't provided a credit card. There is a free municipal parking lot about a block and a half away from the inn. Ask for directions when you check in. We found that open parking spots were always available there. There is no lobby to speak of, but there is a small sofa and some plush chairs at the back end of the bar that are sometimes available. There is a selection of reading materials on bookshelves there. The guestrooms are on the second and third floors. You can get there using the aforementioned stairs, or there is an elevator at the back end of the bar. We found that there was always someone available in the bar to let us get to the elevator, even when we arrived fairly late at night (after one of the shows) when the bar was closed. Our room key also opens the door to the stairs, but not to the bar area. Our room was quite large, with a very tall ceiling (at least 15 feet). It provided a comfortable king bed, desk and chair, arm chair, full-length mirror, and flat-screen TV (maybe 32 inches). We didn't turn on the TV so I don't know about channel availability. We found three unused electrical outlets that could be used for charging electronics. Our rate didn't include hotel, but there is a nice restaurant on the ground floor connected to the bar. We had breakfast there one morning and enjoyed it_nice selection, large portions, and tasty. As I mentioned, I charged the meals to the room even though we didn't provide a credit card in advance. Check out was easy. I just paid for the breakfast I had charged the day before and turned in the keys. Everyone here is friendly and the room is spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I'm sure we will return here in the future.
Nice place to stay in downtown Stratford
I stayed at Foster's Inn overnight while in town for a conference at the Stratford Festival. Reception in the restaurant was friendly and welcoming. My room, on the third floor, was cozy and clean. There was no outside window but a skylight provided plenty of light. The room was peaceful and unique (including creaky wood floors) and was more than adequate for an overnight stay. Rooms are reached by elevator or stairs. The only downside is that there is no on-site parking and therefore one must park in the municipal lot a few blocks away.
Not all rooms are created equal
This is a quaint, old Inn in the middle of town and close to the theatres. It also has the convenience of a small bar and restaurant on the main floor. A group of 10 had breakfast and it was very good and everything came hot and at the same time! The staff was exceptional even the woman trying to get all our rooms cleaned quickly as we arrived earlier than expected! There is lots of shopping and restaurants right at your doorstep which is good because your car is two blocks away. The rooms were decorated in oak mission style Mennonite furniture which was warm. The ceilings were high and every room is different. Unfortunately my husband and I got the smallest room in the centre of the 3rd floor. I had no window and no bathtub! I am claustrophobic and take baths rather than showers so I was quit disappointed. The room did have a skylight which means bright sunshine in the morning when you want to sleep in. The room is clean and the bed was comfortable. I also brought water however there was no fridge or coffee maker in the room.. I guess a few rooms have a couch and a fridge - lucky them! It was a nice place but I will probably look around next time we stay in Stratford or get one of the bigger rooms with a tub and window (fire escape) !!!
Excellent meal on sidewalk patio
We were in Stratford at the Black Swan Brewery and were looking for somewhere to eat. The Foster's Inn was across the road. It was a nice evening and we sat out on the patio. I had crab cakes and my husband had a steak. Both dishes were delicious. It was a busy Saturday and the wait service was adequate. I would go back again.
Quaint and cozy
Foster's is a lovely Inn close to all the fun in Stratford. The room we stayed in was large and comfortable. The floors could have used a good clean, but otherwise it was well cared for. The restaurant below had good food, great staff and reasonable prices. The staff at the Inn were very accomodating and we had a lovely stay.
Foster's Inn a home away from home while visiting Stratford
Foster's Inn is affordable, comfortable, has a very pleasant staff, and is walking distance from all of the Stratford Festival Theaters (if you're willing to walk for 30 minutes). It also has a really good restaurant, so you don't need to fight your way through the very busy restaurants on theater nights.
Great place to stay with helpful staff
This inn is conveniently located in the center of town, near the Avon Theater and restaurants, but is still quiet at night. The room was very attractive, with high ceilings. When our arrival was unexpectedly delayed until late night, they arranged for a key pick-up at a site across the street.
Nice Stay
The Inn is in a great location. Across the street from the Avon Theater and not far from the Festival Theater. Within walking distance from shopping and restaurants. Free 72 Hour Municipal Parking lot a couple of blocks away from Inn. The Inn is right next door to the restaurant. The entrance to the Inn is to the right but you can enter from the restaurant side as well. Small reception area with cute bar and small sitting area in back. We were on the third floor and they do have an elevator. Room was nice and very clean. Free wifi. Be sure to get code when you check in. Desk and 2 chairs in room. Hair dryer, iron and ironing board are supplied in closet. My only complaint that I heard people coming and going outside our room. I'm sure it's because the Inn is old and there are wood floors. My husband did not have a problem with it but I did hear people at 6:30 a. m. leaving. I'm glad we were on the top floor so that no one was walking above us.
Great People!!!
Craig that works there is a great person. Thank you so much and I look forward to staying at Foster's Inn. The restaurant is great and one of the best steaks I've had in my life. I travel for work and 50% of my year is spent on the road. This is in the Top 3 steaks I've ever had.
Perfect place to stay in Stratford
Large, quiet room steps away from the Avon Theatre. Park your car in the free municipal lot and walk wherever you need to go in Stratford. Wonderful breakfast served at Foster's restaurant, and lunch, dinner, and drinks are also available there. This will be our go-to place in Stratford from now on.
Weekend Getaway
This hotel was perfect for a weekend stay with my partner. We were given a gorgeous room that had tall ceilings, plenty of space, and a king bed. The room was very clean and well kept. The hotel was quiet as well. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. We couldn't ask for more during our stay. Thank you to the staff for making our trip fantastic.
To see Stratford Festival Shakesphere shows
Rick I believe is the owner's name and his employees staff were more than generous walked a mile and a half to get two extra cots up in a room when my three sisters from Windsor Ontario decided to join me for the weekend They were more than accommodating the price was even right it was like it worked out to be for their two nights of stay for all of them each like $50 I mean it's also the time of year he needs to go with how he charges The bar we had fun at downstairs it was quaint it was old historical we were in the center of all shopping and close to the amazing restaurants and shows Avon theater and the other two theaters It was absolutely amazing!!! I tried various restaurants and my sisters also we had the best time!! and we were made to feel comfortable and because they join me at the last minute he and his staff were more than generous and accommodating I would rate this place a number five. Thank you for the lovely stay in 2016 September Oh yes and I failed to mention I left a ring in the room and Rick was so generous to have his stuff find it and mail it back to me now that is honesty and just good old-fashioned coming from a great little town of Stratford Thank you for this day I will always consider being there when I come to town Regards Yvette Price Windsor, Ont.
Off Season Stay
The hotel was extremely quiet, which we thought was great! The staff was so friendly and accommodating, the rooms were very very clean and comfortable. The price was also great but would expect a higher rate during the busy season.
An Oasis in the middle of the Province
Since 2008, I have stayed at Foster's Inn while working in the area on business or for a return pleasure trip to Stratford. It was highly recommended to me by one of my clients in the Stratford area. The first time I walked through the doors, I was impressed with how unique it was. Words like funky, eclectic, warm, inviting and special simply don't do it justice. When checking in, you know right away this isn't a large chain hotel or motel. You get an actual key to your room and quite often you are handed the key by the owner, Craig Foster, himself. The check in desk is on the side where the bar and lounge are located and a quick glance will tell you that this is the side you want to sit on to relax and enjoy a beverage or snack while chatting with other patrons and listening to good music. The dining room is quite cozy and you can watch your meal being prepared in the kitchen close by. The patio is also a great spot to unwind after work or anytime for that matter. The Foster's Inn serves some of the best food found anywhere in the Province of Ontario and I should know as we drive 30, 000 kilometers per year on business from one end of Ontario to the other. Each and every meal is a treat whether it is an amazing breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack! The service is always good and the staff are not only friendly, in time they become friends, get to know your name and even remember some of your favourite dishes and drinks, sometimes even a year after you have been there. One of my favourites is the gorgonzola fries. (Please keep this on the menu. And yes I am begging you Craig!) The rooms on the second and third floor are spacious, elegant and unique in their own way. Even the hallways are funky and eclectic. The Inn is well maintained and the staff will do what they can to make your stay comfortable and memorable. Located at 111 Downie Street in the heart of the older section of Stratford, Foster's Inn is a short walk to City Hall, the Avon River where you can feed the ducks, geese and swans, the Festival Theatres and many more sights that make a trip to Stratford a must if you have never been there. If you have an interest in seeing a play, doing some shopping or just having a getaway, do yourself a favour and to go their website to learn more about this oasis in the middle of the province. The only thing I dislike about Foster's Inn is having to leave after my trip is over. Until the next time Craig and staff, thank you, Happy New Year and see you soon.
Overnight stay in Stratford
Arrived mid December in a snow storm. My room was ready for me on arrival and both the check in and out processes were completed in minutes. The hotel, although older was very clean and the king sized bed very comfortable. The bathroom, shower area was spotless and well lit. The staff were all very friendly and although I only had a burger in the restaurant it was without doubt one of the best I have tasted. The restaurant is frequented by the locals and has an excellent name for the food that they serve. The TV had very few channels, so much so that it was better to turn it off but if your there to take in the theater and the town then this won't be an issue for you. There are no coffee or tea making facilities in the room, so if you want either of these beverages first thing in the morning you'll have to go down to the restaurant where they serve breakfast
Comfortable and central location in Stratford
The Foster's Inn is mere steps away from the Avon Theatre and the downtown shops. The staff are friendly, the accommodations were clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The brunch menu is fantastic and the food was delicious. Light sleepers beware... the rooms on the second floor are just above the Foster's Inn bar, so you'll hear music late into the night.
Annual Visit to Stratford, play wonderful; accommodations not so great
Arrived in Mid September for our annual visit to Stratford to celebrate my fiance's birthday. We decided to try a different boutique hotel and I booked the Foster's Inn months prior. Per their website the room looked fairly large, and it shows a decent size flat screen TV, as well as nice bed, chairs, and a nice bathroom. Upon arrival I found out that the pictures were very deceiving. The staff also was not accommodating at all. We were basically " thrown " into our room without anyone telling us anything about " use " of the room. The room's heat was hard to figure out being from the states and in Celsius, etc. The TV was a laugh it was actually a computer monitor the size of a large tablet! The couch in the room looked like it has not been cleaned in a year or so. Also their were only 3 towels which most places provide a bit more or when ask are more accommodating. When I asked about the TV and how to put it on being that you could not even just turn it on, I received poor service. I had to call more than once to try and speak with someone. I also was told there was no " manager " really on site and the owner is rarely there! To say the least I will not be staying again at this property and I hope they realize that they need to clean a little better and improve their customer service skills. Also the website should clearly state the room you are getting which is not the same as the picture!
Foster's Inn is steps away from the Avon Theatre and the main street of Stratford. Perfect for getting around!
Although the hotel is quite old, it has been beautifully refurbished... very clean! The staff was friendly and accomodating and the food was wonderful! Parking is free and closeby. Being so close to the theatre made getting around very easy for my husband who uses a walker.
Thanksgiving Visit
We spent one night here over the Thanksgiving weekend. We were originally put in to a room that didn't have a second bed for our son, but this was quickly rectified with no stress. The room was clean and bright, the bed was comfortable, the pullout sofa bed was perfect for my 4 year old son. The only drawback is if you come back after hours you need to use the stairs to get to your room as there is no access to the elevator. This might be a problem for some guests. We had breakfast downstairs which wasn't too big and good value. The staff were very friendly. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel.
Good location
Well I guess we had the best room in the place. 3rd floor overlooking the street. I think it was room 302. King sized bed which was quite comfortable. It wasn't noisy, most likely because no one was sitting out on the front patio of Foster's Restaurant. During the day there were some repairs going on - some serious drilling. Sounded like through cement / brick. The whole stay was kind of anonymous, we came and went and other than the occasional hello the staff were not overly friendly. I might stay there again, especially knowing what to expect, if the price was a bit better. The price - at $200 Cdn. plus tax per night was a bit steep. We stayed 2 nights. One downside is there is no refrigerator or in-room safe. We like to keep cold drinks in the room. The location was good, especially if you are going to the Avon theatre. The 'free' parking is provided by the Municipality and it is a block or so away. The lot is dark and deserted. I did not feel particularly safe walking back from the lot, even with the Police Station nearby. We had dinner at Foster's - it was good and reasonably priced. On the way out of town we had breakfast at Demetre's Family Restaurant. Lovely (see photo).
Labour day weekend away
Nice clean, modern rooms. High ceilings and nice decor. A very unique old vibe with old hardwood floors. Beds very comfy. Great location just steps from the Avon Theatre and the rest of downtown Stratford. Not one complaint. We'll be back 😃👍
Perfect Fit for Stratford
If you're looking for a true " inn, " Fosters is the place to stay in Stratford. If you're looking for a Hampton's-type hotel, keep looking. Fosters Inn is a converted Odd Fellows hall with rooms on levels 2 and 3. There is a long stairway if you're in pretty good shape. There is an elevator behind the pub if you're so inclined. We stayed in Room 203 which had a high ceiling, probably typical of all the rooms. The room was more than comfortable: great bed, nice sitting area, plenty of clothes storage. My only complaint is the hot water in the shower was difficult to adjust and on one of the two mornings we were there, the hot water ran out before two showers. Craig is the owner and has been since the business' conversion nearly 20 years ago. All of the staff are helpful and friendly. Especially good was Katie, quite possibly the smartest and nicest server in Canada. How many times have you been served by someone with a master's degree who is doing climate change research? Robin is the night manager and runs the pub, which is like something out of a movie. The food is as good as we've ever had. Try the gourmet burgers if you're not up for a great tenderloin steak (we had both). There is a nice outdoor area to sit and eat and / or drink. It's a terrific people watching spot, and there are lots of interesting people in Stratford. We went to two shows at the Avon theater half a block away. We literally left our room at Fosters 15 minutes before curtain time and got to our seats in the theater with time to spare. Parking in Stratford reminded me of being back in college. Forty-thousand students and 10, 000 spaces. All street parking is metered and banned between (2 a. m. and 6 a. m. Parking on the street is free after 6 p. m. There is a municipal lot about two blocks from Fosters, but it serves lots of businesses and government buildings, so it tends to fill fast. If you're a typical Fosters customer, you won't have any trouble putting your car in the lot in the evening. If you need to get in and out of the lot, you might run into trouble finding a place when you come back in the middle of the day. We thoroughly enjoyed our three day, two night stay in Stratford, and the accommodations at Fosters were very good.
Remains our favorite place to stay in Stratford
Location right in town next to Avon. Easy walk to Tom Patterson and pleasant walk to Festival Theater. Large, comfortable, clean rooms. This time we stayed facing rear and it was very quiet, street facing rooms can be a little noisy with post theater crowds, for the short time that lasts. Comfortable beds, crisp linens and large, modern clean bathrooms. Did I say nice large modern rooms? Great restaurant and bar on first floor. We'll be back for theater season next year.
Great Dinner
We enjoyed our dinner at Fosters. Great staff and excellent service. Friendly atmosphere. Close to the Avon and Studio theatres. We both had steak (excellent) which included very fresh local vegetables.
Great experience
We stayed here for two nights while " doing " the Festival and were very pleasantly surprised. I was a bit concerned that staying in an inn located over a pub might prove un-restful. However, we heard no noise from downstairs (and it was busy) and the lodgings were very comfortable, clean and well appointed. Also, the location on Downie street, is very convenient for theatre goers, as it's just steps from the Avon and Studio Theatres and within easy walking distance to the Tom Patterson Theatre (we drove to the Festival Theatre). Also, the meals we had (2 breakfasts, one supper) were very good and there are several other good restaurants in the vicinity (as well as the Chip Wagon in the Market Place behind City Hall - one of our " must go for lunch stops " when in Stratford).
A lovely inn from which to explore Stratford for a few enchanting days!
Inside Foster's Inn, we suddenly notice that it's raining quite hard outside and that we have only 15 minutes left before curtain and our play (Man of La Mancha) begins at the Festival's Avon Theatre on Downie Street. Nonetheless, we really don't care, because the inn is literally steps away from the theatre, thus mirroring the famous real-estate mantra: " Location, Location, Location! " The next morning, a congenial Craig Foster smiles and offers us an early coffee at the bar which is quite close to both the front desk and the adjoining restaurant in his uniquely-styled inn that features stretched, narrow rooms, superbly organized to create an attractive setting - each area intimate, inviting and distinctive in its appeal. At the bar, the effect is produced with exquisite décor, strategic light placement and a cozy rear sitting area, our favourite retreat, where we casually sip beer or coffee. In the restaurant, colourful vertical banners create a modicum of dining privacy and a mid-level horizontal mirror suggests intrigue, alluring us with waist-down covert images of myriad servers, moving in the background. The rooms on the second and third floors are sleek and Scandinavian-like, featuring light maple hardwood and yellow, cream-coloured walls with valance-inspired lighting, a comfortable leather chair and a tan couch by the window, contrasted with a long, dark leather ottoman. Fourteen foot ceilings augment the 1906 Victorian building along with distinctive transom windows in each bathroom equipped with a walk-in shower. A Stratford native, Foster opened this inn in 1997 after running a local B & B. We catch a quick pre-play supper here selecting the " gourmet burgers, " one homemade vegetarian, the other beef at $18 each, pricey, but delicious, accompanied by tasty Italian Pinot Grigio. The service is good, our water glasses never allowed to empty. Our room, 303, faces Downie St, but there is no noise to wake us, blissfully enjoying the king-sized Sealey Posturpedic bed and soft, yummy pillows. Again, the room at $199 is pricey, but B & Bs here are now in the $150+ zone. And, if you are attending the Avon, you are quite close, actually not too distant either from Tom Patterson or the Festival Theatre. We walk to both. Mother Courage at the former (tedious) and King Lear with Colm Feore at the latter (wonderful). My spouse and I have attended the Stratford Festival for over three decades. The productions and acting are world class. We often bring lunch and sit somewhere along the inviting Avon River, enjoying the graceful white swans and the prolific ducks that produce two litters each season of adorable and today, obedient goslings. We notice quite a variety in size of each brood, some with eight or nine but others with as few as three or four babies. A local passerby explains that mink and turtles are the prime predators. The Festival has developed a plethora of adjunct programs to enrich Antoni Cimolino's 2014 season of 12 plays presented in 3 theatres. There are guest speakers, workshops, lobby talks (we take in a free one on Lear) and even a film festival as well as musical entertainment. The audience is quite mature (old), and I am right at home here with my cane. I wonder if young people will fill the gulf as Boomers begin to fade. Stratford is walkable and always easy on the eye as the city and the Festival groom beautiful flower beds throughout. There are little extras thrown in that one appreciates, for example, the inspiring " fanfare " music begun in 1953, played on four trumpets and a field drum prior to each curtain. Parking is plentiful and cheap at 40 cents per hour, and for Foster's Inn, we take advantage of free parking in a municipal lot located just behind the cop shop, five minutes away. Besides the above plays, we have seen Crazy for You, a Gershwin musical that features incredible choreography and dancing and King John, a tiresome Shakespeare history play, but as with Seana McKenna in Mother Courage, why pass up a chance to see Tom McCamus? We have eaten at many restaurants in Stratford including Mercer Hall, Pazzo Taverna and Pizzeria, The Parlour, Fellini's, The Church Restaurant & Belfry, Bentleys Bar Inn & Restaurant and Sirkel Foods on Wellington St, the latter, always a good choice for an inexpensive, tasty sandwich and don't forget Foster's delectable " gourmet burgers. " For coffee, we like Balzac's on Ontario St, where you might spot a Festival actor or a young version of Justin Bieber. What I truly love about Stratford, besides the incredible theatre, is its charming pastoral setting, its overall beauty, its Victorian architecture and its unique shops, particularly the terrific book stores. This is a wonderful city and Foster's is a delightful inn as a base to explore for a few enchanting days!
Will be back!
Foster's Inn review outline After having lunch here last summer, I decided to pick the Inn for one night's accommodation while visiting Stratford again this year. Staying in Room 303, I was very happy with the room provided. I personally find that staying in a renovated older building is much more interesting than staying in a large new hotel. This suite has a large sitting area with a very large window, a well appointed sleeping area, and a large bathroom with shower. If more linen was required, I was offered to help myself to extra in a hallway wardrobe, but there was ample provided. The accessories, such as wall hangings, carved headboard, and antique wardrobe add to the ambience, as do the very high ceiling, perhaps 12 feet or higher. I had dinner downstairs, a very good 7 oz tenderloin, and for dessert, a Lemon Trifle, which was actually more curd, and custard, with blackberries, raspberries, peanut brittle, and a cookie. The dessert was so good, if I had been at home, I would have licked the bowl! The next morning, I enjoyed the breakfast special of the day... French toast, which was made with homemade bread, including a layer of cheese, baked apple slices and syrup. And all at the special price of $5.00. All in all, a great stay, and definitely on my return list!
great service
We drove to Stratford after viewing this website and having some background info on some of the hotels listed. All the information was correct. Wow! We checked out some places and then happened to see The Fosters Inn. We walked in without a reservation and the hostess was really gracious. Danielle was professional and booked us into a room for 3 nights and gave us a 99$ rate for the first 2 nights. Remember, it's always easier to suggest a discount when you are in front of the person, not on the phone! Anyway, Great room, high ceilings, needed a hair dryer and the wooden floors can be loud but overall really nice. Close to downtown and within walking distance of everything. We would definately return.
Beware
Watch out!. I made a reservation to stay overnight here. They charged my credit card immediately for the first night. Their policy, if you cancel the reservation in a timely manner, is to refund the charge. I requested the cancellation by email. They never responded to my request for an acknowledgement of the cancellation. I emailed several times asking for an acknowledgement. I didn't receive it, nor did they refund the charge. I'm disputing the charge with the credit card company
Nice place, but way too noisy
We stayed here over the Labor Day weekend, and I have to say that this was the noisiest place I've ever stayed at. Our room was on the floor directly above the bar area, which has music piped to the outside street area. The music starts every morning around 10 AM, and on our first night continued quite loudly until nearly 2 AM, at which point I went down into the restaurant area and found someone to turn it off (mind you, the restaurant and bar were closed, and only the night cleaning crew was there). The next night, the music was on until at least 1 AM, with a loud group of people hanging out in the patio area... luckily I'd had the forsight to go buy earplugs at the drugstore so I could actually sleep! The room itself was nice, the employees were extremely responsive when asked a question, the owner seemed genuinely concerned. But for the price, definitely look elsewhere (unless you're one of the 2 AM theater rowdies!).
A Good Choice -- But Not the Best
Thanks to the popularity of the Shakespeare Festival, Stratford has a wealth of great hotels. In another city, Foster's might make the list of best hotels. But in Stratford, it can't live up to the competition. I stayed at Foster's for three nights in August 2009. My room was large and clean, with a high ceiling and a clean bathroom. The downstairs restaurant is a convenient place to grab a meal, and the hotel offers free wireless Internet access. Check-in was speedy, and I was pleased to find that the building has an elevator (a rarity among downtown Stratford hotels). The only problem I encountered was noise, both from the street outside and from the restaurant below. It wasn't excessively loud, but it did continue until about 2 a. m. Overall, though, Foster's is a nice place to stay. If you choose it, you'll likely have a pleasant experience. That said, there are other hotels in Stratford that I like much better, such as the Mercer Hall Inn (above Tango) and Bentley's Lofts at 99.
Enjoyable & Convenient
I had eaten several times at Fosters and generally my experience was very good. Having stayed at other hotels that are farther out of town was a bit tiresome, I decided that something in town that was in close walking distance to the theaters would be better. The location of this hotel is perfect, and having such a good restaurant downstairs (and in fact several all along that stretch of road) is very convenient. It's also nice to be off hwy 7 / 8 (Ontario St) as this road is always very very busy as it is a major route for people heading to / from London or to the coast. There is a large, free parking lot one block south, on the SW corner. There is an elevator, so you don't have to worry about dragging your luggage up a flight of stairs. The rooms were clean, comfortable and after a day full of walking, play watching and wine drinking - just perfect. We did not encounter any noise from the restaurant downstairs as some people have mentioned, and my companion is a very light sleeper. Breakfast in the restaurant is very good. There are only a few rooms available, so be sure to book ahead. The room with two double beds faces the rear of the building, but you do not get any noise from the road. I would definitely stay here again.
Great Disappointment
Our family selected this hotel from the internet and wished we had paid more attention to Trip Advisor comments. There is no parking so we were directed to a public lot about 3 blocks away. The hotel has old wood floors in the hallway and rooms so that it is very noisy. People coming and going made it difficult to sleep. The exterior window was broken so that we had a cold draft and the heating control was ancient. We were cold at night. To top it off, the shower at best was only warm. In summary, the rooms are shaby and in need of repair. Our bed was hard and lumpy. We cut our stay short and transferred to another hotel. Our recommendation is to avoid this hotel.
Review of their Restaurant
Didn't stay in hotel but did eat twice in restaurant and all I can say is big waste of money. Had beef tenderloin - end cut cooked like a piece of burnt roast beef. Had chicken pate that was the consistency of slop. " new assistant in kitchen - hadn't let the terrine cool in fridge " My response " why would you serve it to a customer ". The steak " only piece we had left ". Offered a free desert - the meal should have been taken away and certainly I shouldn't have been charged for it. Never ever would eat here again but unfortunately was back in May 2011 and decided to try breakfast. Eggs Benedict. Hardboiled eggs with a teaspoon (if that) of Hollandaise served with cheap greens, the peameal bacon was so over grilled it was dry as shoe leather. Much much better breakfast to be had in Stratford. Would only go back to sit on patio in sun for a drink.
Worst customer service I have ever experienced..
Over the years, while visiting the Stratford festival, I have frequented this restaurant many times. The overall experience at your restaurant has been outstanding, from the ambience, food and decor. However, tonight while visiting the restaurant the hostess was blatantly rude and insulting. Our family had booked a reservation, under the assumption that it would be honoured. Due to some complications there was no tables available for us. I personally understand that " things happen ", and this is life. After expressing some frustration, due to the fact that it was Saturday night at 6:30pm, at the height of the festival season, with our show at 8pm, AND most of the restaurants in town being full, your hostess decided to tell us that we were, for all purpose terms, SOL. She then proceeded to involve other employees while pointing at my mother calling her " the angry woman ". I understand that people have bad days and become overwhelmed or frustrated. Yet, I don't understand how someone can be so blatantly rude and insulting by speaking about a customer in such a manor, in front of them! Not to mention that her overall demeanour was unhelpful, condescending, and irritated, to say the least. I was honestly shocked and astounded. I have never been treated so poorly in my entire life. The only reason I would ever return to this restaurant was the server we did have tonight. I did not catch her name but all I know is that she was wearing glasses, and had a pin up tattoo on her right forearm. She was an amazing server, who did seem to know the definition of customer service. I hope that she does get some recognition, which she deserves. I hope that the next guest who frequents this restaurant will be met with more professionalism and respect.
Convenient, enjoyable & memorable!
I was a bit skeptical as I walked up towards the hotel / restaurant. I was visiting Stratford for the first time, and didn't really know anything about the area. I was pleasantly surprised as I entered the room; like a guest room in an old house, but very roomy with modern amenities. I've been more and more impressed with the hotel as each day passes, mainly due to the locals that hang out here (they like the restaurant / bar too), how friendly everyone is at the hotel and in the town in general. Foster's Inn is owned by Craig Foster and each morning he has coffee ready at the front desk, and wishes us a good day as we head out for work. Everyone here seems to have a lot of respect for him - and the locals say he's wonderful to work for. I have no complaints at all about this hotel, staff, rooms, or service! If I'm ever back in Stratford, I will be staying here!
Great spot in Stratford
I stayed at Foster's Inn for one night while in Stratford for business. It's a charming place. My room was huge with comfortable and stylish furnishings. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Clean. Free wifi. Cable TV. I'd definitely come to stay again.
LOVE IT HERE
This is my second stay here, and I plan on staying here again. I love how much character this hotel has. No room alike. High ceilings, old wood in all rooms. Just beautiful! It's impeccably clean and the staff are great. It's very reasonable during " off season ". Like all places, it's higher priced during " peak season ". I can't wait to return.
Bad Experience at Foster's
We just had a very poor and overpriced meal at Foster's. The " Signature Steak " was tough and tasteless. So was the loin pork chop. If we had the same two dinners at our hotel the meals would have been much tastier, and about $20 less expensive. We have been going to Stratford for more than 20 years, and this meal was one of the worst.
Noisy place to eat!
We din't stay here but ate here. Restaurant is super noisy so we ended up sitting at the bar where it was quieter. The food was good but re realized after that the menu had said both our dishes came with fries and with salad. We were only given fries. Didn't find this a comfortable, relaxing place to eat at all. Wouldn't return.
The very Best of Stratford
Fosters Inn was a complete delight. It was our first time to Stratford and we did research on the internet to find a place to stay. The location for the hotel and all of the amenities it provided made for a perfect stay. The Avon theater was right next door, how convenient. We traveled with another couple and they shared our views of the hotel and location. There is a first class restaurant and bar on the first floor and the rooms are on the second and third floors. The service was first class with everyone being very helpful and pleasant. The rooms were very nice, clean and comfortable. If you chose to walk, all of the theaters were within walking distance of the hotel. When we return to Stratford, we will certainly choose Foster's Inn again.
European Feel
We stayed at Fosters twice in the last month and loved our experience on both occasions. We quite enjoy the charm / atmosphere in the core of Stratford and if you choose to take in a play at the Avon Theatre, you're perfectly located at Fosters. Our room was a bit spartan but large, with very high ceilings, typical of older buildings. We overlooked Downie Street which seems quite active during the day - the streetside patio tables are an ideal place to relax and people watch, while sipping on a beverage of choice. There are numerous places to eat nearby (including of course Fosters itself). We pubbed it the first time at the POUR HOUSE across the street (Thurs. night burgers were half price and huge!) and went fine dining at THE PRUNE on the second visit (small portions very good but pricey). Our breakfast was included at Fosters Inn - it was delicious and very filling. The staff at the Inn were very friendly which definitly adds to the memory. We'll return for sure - Fosters is a feel good place.
Just OK
Stayed during the weekend of May 4-5. Check in was easy once I found the desk at the front of the bar. The room was clean, but very sparse and plain. As mentioned before, the bed was extremely hard, so sleeping was difficult. There was a little noise from other rooms, but nothing to cause a bother. Access to the rooms is by elevator or stairs. The elevator is reached by walking through to the back of the bar. The stairs are through a door beside the bar entrance, inside the patio railing. the two overhead lights between the 2nd and 3rd floors were burnt out, so the stairway was very dark. We tried calling the front desk a couple of times, but never got an answer. Overall it was an OK stay, but we wouldn't make any special effort to return.
Charming, Historic Inn with Plenty of Character
Charming and comfortable historic Inn just off the town square. Intelligent and hospitable staff. Spacious rooms. Sidewalk patio perfect place for early morning coffee. Serves locally-sourced ingredients on the menu in the dining room.
Beautiful rooms
With towering ceilings, lots of wood, great seating, art a little commercial, elevator and great dining room minute from Avon Theatre - this is a great place to stay. Off season a wonderful getaway and very reasonable prices.
Terrible waste of money
My husband and I recently stayed at foster's and agreed that after travelling together for 20 years - doing both high end and low-end trips, this was our worst pick of a hotel, ever. For over $200.00, we had an uninteresting square room, a very hard bed, uncomfortable pillows and couldn't sleep until all the noise from the bar downstairs died after 2:00 am. It was indeed close to the theatre, and quite clean, but I'm sure that any of the other options within walking distance would have to be better - certainly I can't imagine anything worse for that kind of money.
Nice Inn
My wife and I stayed at Foster's Inn for one night in late July and found it to be a nice place to spend the night while in Stratford. We stayed in room 303. The room was clean, a good size, and had an 'old-fashioned' look and feel to it, including hard-wood floors. The bed was somewhat hard but didn't bother me and I had a fairly good sleep. You could hear other room's showers and doors closing, but not much else including any outside or restaurant noise. It could possibly use some updates to the furniture and especially the T. V, a nice flat-screen on the wall would be perfect. Also, better showerheads would be a good idea. Parking is limited. You can meter-park outside the inn for a limited period, (good for unloading) but then will have to park overnight at a public parking lot a very short distance away. The Avon Theatre is right next door, so very convenient. I found the customer service to be very good. We had arrived at Foster's a bit before check-in time and our room wasn't quite ready. We ended up having lunch on Foster's patio while waiting and the waitress (Laura) was very friendly and helpful. While we were still sitting on the patio finishing our lunch, the receptionist of the inn found us and came over to drop the key off to us and showed us exactly where we should park once we got settled in. Although we ended up going to Fellini's for dinner that night (great food but so-so service), we returned to Foster's for breakfast the next morning and were not disappointed with the food or service once again. Although the room was a bit pricey, I would recommend both the inn and the restaurant as good bets if you are ever in Stratford.
Convenient
Our room (201) was pleasant and well appointed. Very light and airy. However, both nights there was loud music from the bar or kitchen. Room 203 is very dark and has only one window. There is no parking nearby; the hotel staff recommend using the Municipal Lot that is a couple of blocks away. We were able to find a space on the street in front of the hotel. Between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm there is a three-hour parking meter limit, so you have to keep going back to feed the meter. Otherwise, we had a nice stay.
Again not impressed
Jan. 3rd. 22f for dinner... go there every year so they had a heads up. Husbands boss has a dinner party for staff. They were out of mussels... bacon and potato soup... pecan squares... and trouble getting the crackle on creme brûlée... Ordered the surf and turf... tried to find the lobster.... steak was tasteless. What was good. Caesars. And service.... price over the top. Next year the staff May book Molly booms. You decide.
Great spot for a weekend getaway
We checked into Foster's Inn (1 p. m. check in, Nice) Great room, great host checking in, Brandon. We decided to eat there as well as it was real cold and we didn't feel like leaving. Dinner was excellent, Tenderloin for myself and Steak Nicoise salad for my wife. We were very pleased. Service was again excellent and we got the bonus of having live entertainment after dinner as well. Chris Martin and E. B. Anderson. Great show.. When we woke in the morning we ended up staying for breakfast as well. Another wonderful meal. Didn't have to leave the hotel at all and were fed, rested and entertained. The only negative items I would say were that in front of the elevator was very dirty and over flowing garbage can. No coffee in the room. Didn't know if they offered room service or not for this. We will return though. Nice to know that in Stratford where alot of business's close down for the winter that you can still get top notch food and service. Thanks folks.. Hats off to Brandon!
Wonderful Inn
5 years ago we discovered Foster's while on a business trip, and now return 2 or 3 times each year when in the area for business. Great food, friendly helpful staff, love the rooms, and Craig the owner goes so far above and beyond to make his customers happy! When we were leaving for the day to work (at 6:30 am) Craig met us in the lounge with coffee and breakfast to go waiting for us after we mentioned in passing the day before that we had an early meeting! Have never had a bad meal - some of the best food available in the province and all locally sourced - along with comfortable rooms, great service, music and ambiance. Many of the local clientele are involved in the Stratford theatre, so you never know who you will meet - have had many extremely interesting conversations. Foster's is always busy, interesting and unique. Highly recommend
Can't wait to go back!
Went for Luke Doucet dinner show-booked the pkg for dinner / show / room / breakfast. Fantastic value-meals, staff, show and room were all exceptional! We loved every minute-we always try to support small Inns such as Foster's and this was definitely one of the best.
Mini-Honeymoon
We decided on a last minute trip to Stratford after receiving some gift cards from life essentials. The Foster's Inn was the only Motel in Stratford on the list. The room was just the right size seeing you don't travel to stay in the room anyway (but if you do the TV could have been bigger)... the bed & pillows were comfy.... the bathroom was spacious & bright.... floor did creak a little which might be annoying to the people below. The outdoor patio is great, the restaurant was clean and the food was great.... The service was awesome by all involved!!!..... Funny how different people leave different comments eh ;)...... The only complaint I'd have would be the cost of the room but then again most rooms in the downtown core go for those prices.... BTW if you want a tub you better request a room with a tub.....
Don't judge a book by it's cover!
Great room. Old style charm hardwood floors very clean and a modern bathroom with a huge standup shower. Loved the location with it's close proximity to all the shops and short walk to the river walk. If you have never stayed here try it at least once and enjoy the charm that foster's has. The restaurant has a wonderful selection for breakfast in the morning right down stairs. The Avon theatre is located just next door if you are planning to catch a show and stay in Stratford.
Hip Boutique Inn with a great night life!
We came to Stratford to dine out in Stratford and see a couple plays this summer. Arriving on the Friday evening, we checked in and then had a relaxing steak dinner in the dining room. After our show, we joined the actors on the Foster's patio for wine and cheese. We ended up talking theatre and enjoying martinis until 2am! Great staff, very welcoming, great night patio scene (especially for Stratford!) and the rooms are beautiful. Highly recommended.
Best breakfast in Stratford
Foster's is a great place to stay because of the rooms and the location, and it has the best breakfast in Stratford. We enjoyed the easy walk to the Avon Theatre, and we also walked to the other theaters, including a pleasant walk along the Avon River to the Festival.
Comfortable room; friendly and helpful staff; great location
At Foster's everyone who served us was bright, cheerful and helpful. The room was well appointed and restful. For theater-goers the location is ideal. The Avon and Studio venues are almost across the street. The Tom Patterson is a five minute walk. The Festival is a bit further but no more than a 15 or 20 minute walk. Foster's is right in the middle of Stratford's many fine restaurants and shops. In fact Foster's own restaurant is excellent and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. If it's not a good time to go out, you don't have to.
Chorus Line - stayed at Fosters dissatisfied
My two friends and I stayed at Fosters For a night, since we were going to see Chorus Line. The rooms were really nice, beds comfy! There service needs some follow through. We reserved a table for dinner, the person taking the reservation knew we were upstairs, that we were going to a show. They could have contacted us, once he realized he overbooked the restaurant. Giving us time to find an alternate, HOWEVER, he waited until 5:30 reservation to tell us he couldn't accommodate. Now we were stuck, with limited time and no where to find a decent place to eat, very disappointed. After the show we went back, wanted a drink and something to eat. Things we ordered they were out of (bread, mushrooms Etc.) So if you plan on going to a show And staying overnight. Make a dinner reservation same time You book a room. Like I said rooms were nice.
Loved the charm
Stayed here for 5 days with 5 other colleagues and found this place to be very " homey ". The staff were very hospitable and Craig, the owner, was fantastic! We were on the second floor, which can be loud from the music below but as soon as we let the staff know, they responded immediately. We ran out of hot water the first day but didn't have problems any day after that. The location is fantastic although there is no overnight parking right there- but it isn't far away. We also ate at the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. Everyone's meals were excellent and the ambiance was lovely. Rooms were clean, comfortable and large. Every room had a fridge which was nice for a longer stay.
If you book a room, don't expect to have one
I reserved this hotel with Expedia and received a confirmation that two rooms were booked and that there was no need to reconfirm. Days later, I received a call from the hotel saying that in fact they only had one room available. I was in Northern Ontario at the time and did not receive the message right away. When I did, I returned the call and was told that indeed, in spite of the fact that I had booked two rooms, there was only one available and that there was nothing I could do about it. While the gentleman was very polite, the fact that the hotel had not worked out its reservation system and was wholly unreliable left me scrambling for another hotel. This is completely unacceptable. If you're looking for a hotel that actually honours its reservations, this one is not for you.
