Banquet night
Visited tonight (Thurs) for the banquet night which I think is Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and costs around £15.00 a person (cash only)... We booked at went around 18:30 thank god we did as it was so busy the time we left (8pm). The restaurant itself is dated and the staff are friendly but the main guy seems to be doing all the running around, think they could do with more staff. We had popadoms to start (these are charged extra) then a starter and then a main each, two sides, and rice, the food was good especially for the price, I had the chicken mango curry (nice). My only complaint was that my diet coke was very flat & tasted more like a cheap coke than the original stuff. Would return but probably only for a banquet night.
Can't wait to go back
Oh the mixed grill tandoori was delicious. Can't wait to go back to have it again my Huss madras nice not the best. Prawns puree very nice not had it served this way before. Staff lovely
Night out
Food was excellent and service was great. Restaurant was clean and prices are very reasonable. We popped in on the off chance and was greeted with a very warm welcome
Customer Service and Customer Experience
We experienced something that doesn't normally happen in hospitality now. As we walked in the door, the manager remembered us and said, " Welcome back. It's been a while ". That blew my mind he would remember. I felt special. When we were seated at the table, he went a little further and said, " It's nice to have you back with us. " That cemented my return as a customer The customer experience and customer service was both present - thank you. The food was absolutely delicious. Hot, at the right time with flavours that exploded in my mouth. Again the service was wonderful. Thank you for making our birthday celebrations so special.
Awful place avoid there are better alternatives in Faversham
I want to to write something good about this place but I'm struggling, The location is lovely, but for large tables there was 10 of us it was cramped. Service was awful we ordered wine and three times they brought the wrong bottles to both parts of the party they were fast with the beer though! The food order took ages but the poppadom were delivered quickly with a nice selection of the usual sauces. Food wise it was awful my tikka Balti was swimming in oil and it was bland. The Chicken pakora was claggy and sadly it was one of the worst meals I've ever eaten and it was not cheap.
Sugar in everything
I agree with a previous, recent reviewer. The pasanda is sweet enough for a dessert and therefre inedible.. The tandoori was greasy and I had to ask for the salad which should have been served with it. The recipes are not authentic. The plain naan was both sweet and greasy.
NO HOTPLATES TO KEEP FOOD WARM
Myself and 10 friends visited last Friday 2nd and the food was great, but they have stopped using hotplates in the middle of the table, this is a very big mistake, the food cooled far to quickly and took the edge of what was otherwise a very nice dinner!
Unexpected charge, not shown on the menu
Please be aware that when ordering poppadoms, listed on the menu at 90P each + 85P for the dips, that you will get a further charge of £1 per person for a 'plate' (5 x £1) that is not shown anywhere on the menu, meaning that five of us were charged £9.95 for four poppadoms, disgusting! Although there is a card machine, this restaurant wanted cash.
Absolutely Dreadful Food
I literally am struggling to find the right words to express how awful the food here was. I f you don't like spices, or flavour of any kind in your curry, other than sugar, and lots and lots of it, this is the place for you. Even my plain rice had been sweetened with sugar. My chicken Makhani bore no resemblance to chicken makhani whatsoever, or indeed to a curry of any kind, It was more like chicken in a sweet, insipid, yellow dessert sauce. Inedible. And not cheap either. A total rip-off. Would not eat here again if it was the last food available on earth and I was literally starving to death. P. S. Have only given it one star because it's not possible to give zero.
Excellent Banquet night !
Visited last night (Thursday) for Banquet night. Apart from lamb chops or Prawn dishes, everything was available on the menu for the Banquet night. Food was excellent, highly recommend the Garlic Chilli Chicken or the Chicken Shazlik. Wine very reasonable at £17.95 a bottle as well. Service was prompt and with a smile - very important these days. Dont miss out!
Spot on 👍🏼
Just had a delivery, ordered it for half 7 and it turned up bang on that time, lovely snd hot, amazing taste, not one thing to complain about 👍🏼👍🏼
Visit with friends at the raj
Thought we'd try this place out after visiting the designer outlet. Food was amazing and service was great! Good job guys!
Always great food
Our favourite Indian food by miles. Always delicious and good value. Dine in or takeaway. you won't be disappointed.
Coming back..
We used to eat here a lot and we had regular take aways too. Then a few years ago the quality dropped, the food was all the same no matter what you ordered, all in the same sauces and the take away was awful, often cold and tasted like gravy granules with a few onions and not much else so we turned to Cafe Spice and the Prince of India. However returned to the Raj for nostalgia and the sit down meal was very good again, as we remembered. Good service, a bit slow but each main was different, sides, rice and breads good, a little under spiced but tasty. Made the mistake of having a take away next, not good, glutenous, tasteless and cold, just onions and a few peppers and all the sauces the same. Getting better after a bad dip in quality but do not have their take away...
2 hours late!
Absolutely awful service, very very average food. 2 hours late delivery. Phone left off the hook all night so couldn't even complain or cancel the order!
Great food
Although we didn't book and the place was getting quite busy we still got a table. Food was very nice and staff was friendly. Pricewise this place was great and I felt well stuffed and satisfied when I walked out. Good experience.
Birthday celebration
Excellent food, extensive menu, very friendly atmosphere, efficient service, good value for money.. continue to return time after time.
Stone cold food
Food arrived and it was stone cold!! My boyfriend had the butter chicken and the sauce was that cold it has congealed YUK!! so we had wasted money on this food as we did not eat it. My food wasn't nice either very dry and tasteless, definitely won't be eating from here again
Takeaway
Well what can i say but very very disappointed, 2 main dishes were watery gravy, one with cream, the other with madras spice, no substance at all, mushroom rice bland, onion bajhees were soggy and the sag aloo was so oily we didn't eat it. Shame as the last takeaway was amazing, sadly i think we will not return as too inconsistant, rather spend £30 on good produce and cook at home. Shame really!!
Shocking !!!!
Cannot believe we have such a poor establishment in our town. Chewy hard chicken, cold rice and onion bhaji's that were spat out due to the sheer amount of grease they were half cooked in. The chicken madras had no flavour and went in the bin with everything else. I understand this place has just reopened where as it really should have been boarded up.
A taste sensation!!
A Taste Sensation Janelle and I went out for our Barefoot Investor monthly evening, (If you want to know what a Barefoot Investor evening is, please do ask!) and this month, we went to the Raj in West St Faversham. The food was absolutely lovely, the service was excellent and Jubar, our host, looked after us superbly. Even to the point of bringing 2 extra after-dinner mints for me at the end of the meal. Now that does impress me with my love of chocolate. We had Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Chicken chilli Mosata, wonderful Garlic Nan bread and rice. The meal was a taste sensation. Thanks for a great night, great service and great ambience Jubar. The Raj, well worth a visit
Salty
Food is average but salty. The atmosphere in the restaurant is friendly. Nice staff and friendly service.
A Great Indian Restaurant
We have been here a few time now and the food is alway good. The place is clean and all the staff are very welcoming.
2nd visit very good
Second time I have visited. Tuesday evening and the place was very busy. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was very good although my 'hot' dish was a bit too mild for my liking. A really good evening and I am certain we will be back again soon
Always enjoyable
Lovely food and always helpful when requesting gluten free or special dishes. Helpful staff and very good value. Always book a table if you want to dine on a Thursday and that's very busy due to special offers.
Very good meal
Great food with good service at a reasonable price. Be aware that the portion sizes are very large - we just couldn't eat everything!
Excellent
The restaurant is next door to my apartment and have been eating here for well over twenty odd years and I really enjoyed all the food ive eaten every time, well worth a visit especially the tandoori
Great little curry house
Have been going to this Indian restaurant for years. We can always guarantee a good meal here. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Wouldn't go anywhere else in the town
Frankly horrified..
We were fairly optimistic we'd get an ok curry, from previous reviews, but this restaurant needs a revamp, new menus and a new chef! The front of house staff are pleasant but let down by a shabby, slightly grubby, restaurant, we were really put off by the laminated menus that were creased, torn and greasy! Poppadums were cooked in rancid oil. Everything we ordered was covered in a layer of oily onions, the tarka dhal was cold, bland and stodgy and a prawn dish arrived in half a red pepper with the seeds left in. My tandoori chicken was so dry and salty I couldn't eat it. The tandoori roti was good, everything else was horrible. Don't try and eat curry in Faversham! We've learnt our lesson..
Really basic
After talking to a couple of local people this place was the best option.. so off I went, armed with great TA reviews.... God I'm pleased I didn't go to one of the others. The place is a bit shabby and the food, served in a few minutes, was, well.. really average, basic pre cooked chicken in a standard, very oily sauce, I suppose this is the standard we accept now.
A Friday evening
Our friends wanted to take us to The Raj as it was their favourite Indian Restaurant when they lived in Faversham. They didn't disappoint. The staff gave great service and the food was excellent. I have eaten in various places up and down the UK this is definitely number one for the food. Choice on the menu was extensive and the portions were adequate. Did not leave feeling that we had over-eaten but had had a very tasty meal.
Very tasty food and friendly service
The Raj always looks busy but my friend and I were happy to be able to get a table. The food was delicious, very well presented and very tasty. The staff were genuinely very friendly and patient no rushing to pick up plates. Would definitely recommend and will be going there again without doubt.
The best Indian cuisine in the area. Second to none
WE love this place. Never had a bad meal here. Always pleasant and helpful with your choice. Great tastes and enjoyable company. Would recommend to a person or persons that appreciate a real curry. We have a take away some times as well and it is always delivered on time and hot. John Styles. Thank you see you soon.
Surprisingly good on an off the cuff visit
As connoisseurs of 'Indian' cuisine (much in the UK is Bangladeshi) and looking for better than average restaurants it was a very pleasant surprise to find this one on the off chance. Good menu and service, well cooked and presented, reasonable prices. Thoroughly recommended.
Nice enough
Food was tasty enough, but the service was a little slow considering the restaurant wasn't even that busy. Waited 25 minutes for the bill to be processed. Would like to return to try again some day.
First Indian whilst back in the UK
Been back a couple of weeks and decided it was time for a curry. Just can't get a decent one where we are in Spain so we were looking forward to this. Happened to be staying in Faversham for a week so had a look online at the local curry restaurants. Hard to choose between them so just took a chance on the Raj. My Wife had the king prawns and boy were they huge! She was very impressed. I had the vegetarian thali and enjoyed it immensely. Don't find it everywhere so pleased. In fact, we enjoyed it so much we grabbed a takeaway for our daughter before we left.. She had a chicken massalla. She said she found the chicken a bit overcooked (hard) Friendly staff too.
yummy!!!
I love this Indian friendly staff! average prices! amazing currys. would recommended keep up the good work
Good Indian
Food was good. Service was good. Had mango lassi and chana masala as a main. Nothing extra special to distinguish it from other Indian restaurants but a nice restaurant nether less.
Best Indian food in Kent
Have been going to the raj and getting takeaways for almost 15 years. It has never disappointed. Flavoursome great fresh food and great service. The restaurant itself us great Tudor style in a nice part of town. I regularly have the chicken tikka balti but my family have different and they are all fantastic to my understanding. I recommend hugely.
As bad as you can get
How and where can Indian food be made with zero taste? Well start here. That plus oh so slow service. Depressingly disappointing.
Dinner
Food and service good. Very pleasant staff. Would recommend. Will visit again. No parking in road, but plenty of parking in a few minutes walk.
Never disappoints
As usual had a very pleasant evening. Good food, very friendly staff, excellent value for money, but then I wouldn't expect anything less.
A well needed meal
A group of us visited the restaurant and were very happy with our meal. We walked in with no booking and the waiter was very helpful, found us a good table and took our drinks orders, offered us a menu and was very polite. The menu has a good choice and is layed out in a way that is easy to read and make a structured order. Drinks were served rather quickly despite good numbers in the restaurant and the service was superb. The food was amazing (the onion bhaji's were simply delicious) and definitely worth the short wait. We all enjoyed it and were impressed with the price too when the bill came. Thank you we will be back!
Great food
Went here recently with friends, lovely food, friendly attentive staff, good atmosphere. Will visit again. I would recommend.
Great meal
Very enjoyable meal out with friends. Thought the service, menu, food was all very, very good. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely go back again.
Gorgeous take away curry from The Raj last week!
Had a delicious take away from the Raj ! I have eaten here before and was sadly disappointed but we decided to give it another go and so glad we did. Hot and fresh, it was all very flavoursome and good value for money. I had the vegetable Korma with rice, a cauliflower bajee and sag paneer, plus a shared naan bread. My husband ordered the lamb Dansak which comes with rice, which he really enjoyed. It was quite spicy but bursting with flavour, clearly freshly made and hot. My Korma was creamy; oodles of coconutty flavour mixed with good selection of vegetables. Sag Paneer was completely divine this time and Bajee very pleasant as a side. We will go back now for more, it's the best takeaway I have had in a long time. This is a Halal restaurant which perhaps they should make clearer. The takeaway arrived in good time, about 40-45 minutes and was very hot on delivery. Highly recommended
Brilliant Food
Attend this restaurant on Friday Evening with my friend, couldn't fault the place. Great authentic curry and good service. I had chicken madras, rice, Bombay aloo and a chapatti, my friend had chicken tikka masala, rice, sagg aloo and a garlic naan. Brilliant food, good heat in the madras, nice creamy sauces and good spices in the sides. The rice was well seasoned and the chapatti and naan was light and tasty. Will definitely come here again. Thank you for a lovely dinner. Good prices too!
Excellent food
I ate here the other night with family members. The food was excellent, absolutely delicious, with very good service. Highly recommend.
Hop Festival Weekend
Visited Hop Festival Friday, very busy and although we had no reservations we were found a Table. The Staff were friendly, the service was good and the food excelent
Banquet nights Tuesday and Thursday
Outstanding value on banquet nights at The Raj. The food is always good and reasonable portions. I usually have to leave some. There are a few restrictions but there is an extensive range of dishes. Staff are polite and friendly. It is best to book as it can get busy.
Bland
This has got to be the blandest currys either I or my wife have ever had. If you are looking for a test fest go somewhere different. Chicken is precooked, sauses have no spice at all. Do not believe the hype, go somewhere else and save yourself from a dark tunnel into bland.
Great food - great staff interaction - very clean environment
Visited The Raj on my first visit to Faversham. In all, a really enjoyable experience with freshly prepared Thursday banquet of starter / main / side / rice or naan all for £10.95. As I am not a lover of sides, I was permitted to replace this for a rice (nice to see flexibility !). I would certainly recommend this restaurant to those who either love Indian food or those who wish to give it a first try as the menu is varied and extensive and all extremely reasonably priced and the environment is relaxed and spotlessly clean.
Remarkable food and amazing value!
I added a review for The Raj a couple of months back, but following recent visit, had to add these photos. The food at The Raj tastes as good as it looks and really is remarkable and amazing value for money.
fantastic food, atmosphere and hosts
We were a group of 7 with one not even liking curry! Well they were fantastic brining us mixed started to share between us, then asking the non curry eater what flavours he likes, what he likes to eat before saying leave it with me. He came back with a wonder dish made with lobster, a sweet creamy sauce which was discribed as heaven. The rest choice of the menu although the host made a few recommendations which were amazing. We will be back very soon and the non curry eater will be there.
Solid Indian restaurant
Five of us out for a meal on a Friday night and arrived when the place was very busy. Still the staff had us seated quickly and were very helpful and attentive throughout. An extensive menu and food served in a timely fashion and plenty of it. Particularly enjoyed the salmon tikka starter. An overall great meal and the evening flew past. Well worth a 4* rating and just lacking a bit of wow factor that would make it a truly memorable experience otherwise.
a great let-down, wouldn't return
We moved from Yorkshire a couple of months ago and are trying to find a decent curry in Kent! We are vegetarians, and have been quite spoilt by the quality of curries in the north. Between us we have about 40 years experience of eating curries, in a very wide variety of places and restaurants. The Raj is the 3rd place we have tried in Kent since moving down here, and we tried it on the basis of the reviews on this site. Unfortunately our experience did not tally with the reviews, which we were disappointed about, not least because this was a birthday meal as well as part our quest for a good curry! The restaurant itself is clean, and looks freshly decorated. It wasn't busy but filled up a little while we were there. We were served quickly. The beer, whilst expensive, was cold. Our starters (the only 2 veggie starters on the menu) were very good, and we thought it bode well for the meal itself. It did not. We chose 3 veggie side dishes, as there was a paucity of veggie mains on the menu: cauliflower bahjee, chickpea masala, and saag paneer. The cauliflower was just that, boiled salty cauliflower. The chickpeas was just that, a bowl of boiled chickpeas, although slightly tasty. The saag paneer was like nothing we have ever seen before under that name: it was a bowl of melted cheese (so not paneer as paneer does not melt to liquid) with bit of spinach stirred in, and a LOT of coconut, so it was very very sweet. I have never seen anything like it described as saag paneer. We ate the chickpeas but left everything else. I did tell the waiter but he didn't actually do or say anything so short of standing up and demanding to see the manager my options to complain were effectively stopped there. I didn't want the confrontation, I just wanted to leave. So we paid up (£30 for a meal that was two thirds inedible) and left. Never again. This may be that they are not veggie-friendly, or we caught them on a bad night, or that southern curries are not as good as northern ones, or a mixture of the above. As it is, I am writing this review to temper the positive ones, as we did not have even vaguely the same positive experience, and were very disappointed and nauseated by what we were given.
Disappointed
Slow inattentive service an hour between starters and main no offer of more drinks to keep us occupied. Food was great well presented but slow to a point where we ready to go. If it's going to be slow please communicate with us not hide. Will not go back
Comfortable and Cosy
Standard Indian restaurant menu priced competively. Food presented well, selected dishes were tasty and spiced accordingly. Service was good although it was early in the evening. The restaurant is in an older building in West St and gives a feeling of being a bit 'oldy worldy' but welcoming, which is a contrast to most Indian restaurants which can feel stark and gaudy. Both Cobra and Kingfisher beer are available as is a wine list although we didn't peruse it. Nice experience, tasty offerings, good value. Gentlemens toilet is very small and needs carefull manouvering, look for the modified door!
Over rated
I have been here a few time and visited on Hops Festival and have to say very poor service. Food was poor and I did think trying to fit in people who have not been before and I will say the food was so bad and service sooooo slow I will not visit again. Other options in Faversham including curry restaurants.
Disappointing
This had been " bigged up " to me as being exceptional.. sorry, I didn't find anything exceptional about it. Food was the usual standard fare, and I thought the service was unfriendly and not at all welcoming. Tables very close together.. I really don't want to either hear or be heard when I am enjoying a night out, and was surrounded by some very loud people. Won't return
Really lovely food and great town for a wander after
We booked this as the men do not like buffet style and most local Indian restaurants near us in Sittingbourne do Sunday buffet. We went out of our way to try this restaurant and it was worth it. We have booked for my mums birthday to eat here again we enjoyed it so much. Tasty flavours good quality meat, well cooked and excellent service. Clean and tidy restaurant.. Only thing I would say is the toilets need replacing as damaged and make it look tatty. Hasn't put me off as was very clean.
Disappointing
This is an honest review of our visit. Draw your own conclusions. This is our third and last visit. The building is nice the staff are ok the food is fair. We were seated on a very small table for two. Even though there were lots of larger tables vacant. My kingfisher lager was very flat. Our orders were taken and food delivered. It was ok. At no point did anyone bother to ask if our food was ok. Or did we require anything else. We felt like outsiders. There is much better in this town.
Banquet Nights
Tuesdays & Thursdays are 'Banquet Nights' (1 starter, 1 main, 1 side & 1 rice) for £11 - excellent value but be sure to book early!
Service appalling on this occasion
Booked table for 4 arrived to find a busy restaurant on festival weekend. Were shown to table and left for 25 minutes without offer of a drink without a menu with out an apology for the delay. Managed to get attention of waiter who without apology said someone would be with us shortly. Mean while we could see staff taking phone orders so clearly phone orders are more important than the people sitting at their tables. 5 minutes later waiter asked what we wanted to drink still no menu still no apology. 10 minutes after that we got up and walked out. Busy is not an excuse for poor service. Get more staff or take less bookings.. Have eaten here many times before and the food is good but I won't be going back. Ended up at another restaurant who will get my custom in future.
Flat lager.... dodgy tummy
A disappointing experience here..... flat lager ungraciously replaced, small portions of food and unenthusiastic staff. There are better dining experiences in Faversham, be in no doubt.
Great Food
The food was of an excellent standard and great value for money. Service was very good, and efficient, despite the restaurant being very busy
Great food, great service, yummy food!!!
The Raj is a great indian resturant. Once you have been there you won't want to go anywhere else. Staff are attentive and food is delicious. Enjoy!!
More 2.5 than 3!
Tables are too close together and even though the restaurant was pretty empty they put a mother & son next to us! We were so close they may have as well sat on our table!! Food was mediocre! Asked for left overs to be put in containers to take home but all was mixed in one and looked disgusting! Won't be here again!
Tasty Traditional Indian Cuisine
Pleasant atmosphere, friendly waiters, very tasty food and banquet nights a bargain. Take away is top notch too!
The best Indian in Faversham
Just got home after another great value Indian. We've been coming to The Raj for years and never fails to disappoint. Great food, friendly service and overall a great value night out.
Good food, good value
Two adults and two teenagers arrived late after watching a film at the Royal. Banquet night so £11 each for a starter, a main course, a side dish and bread or rice. The restaurant was full when we arrived but we were seated promptly and our food arrived quickly. Service was polite and unobtrusive. Great place: only thing stopping an overall excellent is that the food was genuinely very good, but not excellent.
Average Indian Restaurant
This restaurant was recommended to us by our neighbours so we had lunch here one Sunday. It was pleasant enough, although we were the only people in the place apart from a few people popping in to collect takeaways. The lunch menu was overpriced, bearing in mind the other options in the area. The food was competent, but formulaic and nothing special. It was pretty much like any other bog standard Indian restaurant in the UK. Nothing really excited us. The service was pleasant enough, but nothing special. We might return, but there are several other Indian restaurants in Faversham which we are yet to explore.
Excellent Restaurant - Excellent Food & Friendly Staff
This is our favourite Indian Restaurant where we frequently dine. The food is excellent, with a good choice of dishes for Starters, Main, Sides & a good selection of rice dishes & naan breads too. I am not usually a big fan of spicy food, so I always order the Chicken Passanda for Main, but recently I have been more adventurous with my Starter, trying different dishes with a different level of spices, all of which have been delicious. The staff are all so lovely, friendly and obliging and make a point of greeting you personally, which is nice. We have been here as a couple and with family. If you haven't yet been to The Raj, I would definitely recommend you try this lovely restaurant with excellent food. x
They never let you down
Nothing exceptional to say about the Raj other than it is consistently good every time I've visited.
Friendly but poor quality food
I visited the Raj yesterday for dinner. The restaurant is well appointed and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. However, the food was very disappointing. We paid a premium for the prawn biryanis. But the prawns were over cooked and rubbery. There were not very many. However, the vegetable curry part was very good as was a cauliflower side dish. We also had a lamb Rogan. This was neither tasty nor had much lamb in it. Quite a poor meal.
Excellent meal
Very enjoyable evening, food very good and reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would go again.
Won't be back
Food very bland with no spice flavor. Portions more than adequate.
