Not as great as it sounds
This place is inexpensive but not nearly as good as you would imagine for the many customers. Tastes more like cafeteria food. Burgers are very small. We were disappointed when we went. However, they are almost always busy with a line to the drive-thru, so clearly, not everyone feels the same way we do.
In the early days was fantastic, now a days just avoid
I have eaten there off and on since the place opened. They cannot keep management staff, and have had a new store manager about every 6 months since the place opened. Two were fired due to being put in jail for DUI, and driving without a license. A few year ago the store manager tried to burn the place down 2X (first time about $20K in damage, second time over $65K in damage). Do not know current management as they are new. Food lately is VERY expensive, and about 1 / 2 portions of in the past. Double burger tray, with cheese outwest style, chicken wrap and cheese bites is about $9.50. Not a deal by ANY means. This place used to serve the SAME combo for around $6.50, yes almost double markup in under 2 years. Base combo used to be $5.00, now is $7.00 Not a deal any more when burger is size of half dollar, and portions are measured out by counting each piece... instead of the handful of fries, or cheese nuggets in the past.... Lines are no longer as long as they once were and no ability to hang out with friends late at night. Eating in the parking lot is frowned on, and the inside has been closed for over 2 years now....
Good hushpuppies
I was in town with a college friend for a college friend's wedding. The service and food was decent & inexpensive. I learned from my last experience to get double hushpuppies. They are probably the best item on the menu.
Mediocre burgers
First time eating at Cook Out & it was during Covid. We ordered at the walk up window. Ordering was a bit confusing to me. I didn't realize the burger came with nothing on it. The employee didn't get my order correct. Burgers & sides are smaller than you would think. Fries weren't great. I also ordered " chili " which was just coney sauce. Overall not as great as I've heard people talk about.
Great Food
Staff are all very friendly and polite. Organized and efficient with all the orders. Restaurant is well kept
Better than fast food joints
Food is good and plentiful. Hotdog is good w 2 sides. Don't miss the fries and milkshakes! Order / counter pick up
WooHOO for late night eating!
GREAT shakes, but don't wait too late, because the line may be out the door & around the building! Enjoyed some milkshakes on a Saturday night. Delicious!
Super good deal
We visited Lynchburg and were in the mood for something quick and All American. We opted for a local college hangout, and are glad we did. For the price (less than $14) we had full meals and milk shakes. My wife nooded with happy eyes her approval of her burger, onion rings, and fries. My pulled pork barbecue with Frank's Hot Sauce was plentiful and tasty. The slaw was slightly sweet which I like and I had a corn dog as my second side item. It all just plain old hit the spot! Our shakes were tasty along with the meal with enough left to serve as a light dessert. Ordering is like using a foreign language, but they got it right. It was take out (busy night) but it was still plenty warm back at the hotel. We can see why it is so popular with the college crowd, tasty food for a very fair price. Yummm.
Ok Food
The staff was friendly but not very helpful. The food was good but nothing to get excited about. I ordered a hot dog fries and a drink. I did not notice the sign offering an extra menu item for less cost for the same thing I ordered when I was walking out the door. I was not informed by the counter people of their standing special and paid about 50% more for my meal than I should have paid.
Just not impressed
Been hearing so much about Cookout-and they are certainly doing something right because they are always busy! I decided to try a shake. They gave me the wrong kind-but I didn't want to go through returning it. Went back a different day to try the burger. Just average. Chick Fil A is still THE BEST!
Disgusting
I can't figure out for the life of me why this place is so popular. There's way more burger than bun, and all of them are completely tasteless. I noticed a metal drawer in the kitchen opened at knee level that contained what looked like chicken nuggets. Employees are standing over uncovered nuggets. Totally disgusting. I wouldn't eat at this place again if it was the only restaurant in the entire state of Virginia.
Need to get it together
Went on a Sunday evening, and with bad weather in the area, there were a lot of restaurants not open. This location is always slammed with college students, but we had to wait about 45 minutes for 4 milkshakes. They were very apologetic, but it was ridiculous.
Milk Shake is Amazing
We stopped here for a milk shake after dinner at the restaurant in front of this place. Shake was fantastic!!! In fact, I could have had a second one! Hope they are open on Sunday, becuase I want to stop in again before we leave town tomorrow.
Quick Food
This was like the food I used to eat as a kid. Drive thru lane is always busy, but worth the wait for sure.
Worst service I have every had!
Lady at Drive thru was very rude, actually never smiled. Ask for something her response was no. Then ask for something else and she gave it to us and turned her back to us. Order a large drink and got small. This was the worst cool out ever. Go somewhere else.
Wonderful shakes!!!
I missed the Watermelon shake by one month (only available Jul -Aug), but their Oreo and Strawberry shakes made up for it. I look forward to Cookout every time I am in Lynchburg. This just good fast food!!!
The hush puppies alone are worth a return visit!
While the fries and Bbq sandwich were just okay, the hush puppies were delicious. I may go back just for them. I also like the reasonable prices.
Caramel cheesecake milkshake is fabulous!!
Drive-through staff is very friendly and easily understood over speaker. Even though they were busy they kept the line moving.
Good food, great value
This little eatery is hopping with students on Sunday night. Their combo menu is a great value. We had the chicken burger and it was great, as were the fries, hush puppies, and everything else. Be sure to splurge $1 more for a delicious shake. Some of the over 40 flavors sound a little gross, but the Reece's Peanut Butter Cup one was awesome. Enjoy!
Fast Food cooked for you
Not your typical fast food menu. They cook your food to order and they have it to you relatively quick. You cannot beat the selection of milkshakes either. Great chicken tenders
Get a shake, awesomely low prices
We where going to a different place to get ice cream. Glad we stopped here! Tons of options on the favors for a shake. No whipped cream with a cherry, just a really good thick shake.
dinner
Stopped here for dinner after graduation at Liberty. There were several cars going through the drive-thru but we were planning on sitting down for a meal. The food was great and tasted great and for two adults it cost just under $15
Always have to stop here
Always enjoy stopping by getting a little something to eat. It's was a must for the last four years, will defiantly miss y'all
GREAT FOOD! GREAT PRICE!
This is our first time visiting Lynchburg VA. we spotted this place driving by, and we were not disappointed! Everything and i mean EVERYTHING was Awesome!!! My favorite was the Bar-B-que sandwich with the coleslaw on it! WOW! DELICIOUS!!!! Well worth the wait in the Line!!!
Good and cheap eats
Chicken tenders, onions rings and cold slaw under $5. My daughter got the ranch chicken wrap and fries. Across the street from the Residence Inn. Food was good. Was very busy. Appeared to be a hangout for a college students and a few families.
Cheap eats, quick service, decent food
Visiting my son at school at Liberty University... this place is popular among the college students, and its not surprising why. For a little over $5, you get a combo meal with your choice of sandwich, 2 sides and a drink (including a float!). Can add a shake with unlimited add ins for $1. Can't go wrong.
Don't let the lines fool you
If you see the lines for the drive-thru wrapping onto Wards Road, you might think this is a cult destination, but really it just stays open later than most in the 'burg. As far as fast food is concerned, it's pretty gold star, if you order something, it tastes and feels like the thing it purports to be. The food is a pretty great value, especially when compared to the quality and price of its peers, but it is very much fast food. University breaks are the best time to scratch the cookout itch since you don't have to wade through the dregs to get a decent bite. All in all, Cookout is a staple wherever it is, and Lynchburg is no different.
Bells and whistles? No. Good food at a good price? YES
We had our first and second visit to the Cook Out of Lynchburg this past weekend. The place is crazy busy with the college crowd and locals. The food was very good for the price. The milkshakes are okay as far as quality. Great if you like quantity! I also enjoyed the " culture " as there is a lingo that is used. You can get wildly creative with your orders! We will be back.
Good food quick
Went for something other then the " Holiday food " and the Bacon wrap was great!!! Hushpuppies were good and the Cheeseburger cooked and tasted good. The only negative was the Chicken quesadilla was not good and next time will order a double order of the Bacon wrap.
Worth the Wait!
Although the drive through line is super long, it's worth the wait so that you can enjoy reasonable pricing, good quality food and sensational shakes! I really enjoy their Cajun seasoned fries. I love that you can add as many flavors to your shake as you like which reminds me of a snowball stand! My favorite shake combination is strawberry, banana, pineapple with peanut butter. My husband's favorite shake combination is peanut butter cup and Oreos which is like a Hershey's Cookies and Cream bar and Reese's cup all in one cup. 😋
Good food! Great shakes! Lots of food! Cheap price
Went here for burgers and shakes! Shakes have a lot of flavors and you can choose up to 10 and make your own. It was really good.
Great selection great prices
Such an unusual place. In a lot of ways, just fast food, but with a much better selection. Hamburgers, hotdogs, quesadillas, milk shakes and mores. Everything is good.
Great food and the # 1 late night spot!!!
The cookout always delivered on quality fast food. Food is always fresh and people always friendly. When you see the line out to the street you will know in telling the truth
Very delicious
Tried the small sadnwiches, they are so delicious, a couple of them is enough for the dinner. The bread itself is soft and tastes good. The place is good, lot of tables for eating. You don't have to wait too much for your order.
Good place for a late night meal
Been there multiple times, during the day is pretty decent, and at night it is surprisingly busy. The Customer Service is rated at a 4 / 5. they've yet to mistreat me. Everything about this place is amazing in all but 1 area. The portions of sides, like fries and chicken nuggets, and onion rings are abysmal. Otherwise, it's good for the money spent. Their other food is decent and they have the best milkshakes.
Hummmm
Burger I got was pretty good... but onion rings were soggy and the coleslaw was horrible tasted like it was sour. I didn't try a shake but they had quite a few... cost was decent because if I had paid more for this meal it probably would have gotten 1 star.
Love this place
Food was a great value. Milk shakes were fabulous. Dining room was clean as was rest rooms. Good location.
Wear your most comfortable jeans.
I always overeat at the Cook-Out because we do not live near one. We love the affordability of this restaurant and the customer service should be like this everywhere- the world would be a happier place. The hush puppies are perfect and the onion rings have large slices of onion. The BBQ bun does cost extra. Over 40 flavors of milkshakes is quite a choice!
Their milkshake brings all the locs to the yard
This is the locals fave spot. Late night food runs. Reasonable prices. Milkshake options to make your brain freeze!
Very good
Service was great. Food inexpensive but had great taste! Kids loved it. Hamburgers come with how you want them and have great flavor.
Great fast food
College hangout for food. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken and bbq. I love the nc style chopped bbq plate. Not a better deal to be found.
Great food, great prices
As I said in the title, Great food, great prices. I was able to feed a family of four: a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake for less than $20.
Better than the typical fast-food place!
This was our second visit to the Lynchburg Cook Out. Our first visit was about a month ago, and we thought the experience was very good. Our second visit was equally good. Firstly, consider the 4 star rating as a " fast food " rating…not comparing it to sit-down restaurants. Given a choice between the " standard " fast-food places and Cook Out; we'd probably go to Cook Out. Food; burgers are nothing special in taste, very typical; flat patties but with very fresh lettuce, tomatoes, etc.; you select the toppings you want. Hot dogs; my wife's real reason for liking Cook Out. Grilled, tasty and fresh. Fries; both times very hot and fresh; good crunch on the outside and soft interior. Slaw; we like ours on the dry side so this was perfect. If you like a wet slaw; order a different side. Shakes…forget about the straw; you'll suck your lungs inside-out trying to drink them through a straw…get a spoon. Again; very fresh, they seem to be mixed as ordered, not taken from a dispenser. Service; each time we were there we arrived before 11:30 and ate inside so lunch crowds were not a problem. Waits were between 5 and 10 minutes to get our order. Service; excellent both times. Cashiers are very friendly and helpful…well-trained and with great personalities. Two lunches for just over $10... total.
Great Place to Eat
I got the bar-b-queue plate with coleslaw, onion rings, and hush puppies and my husband got a hamburger and onion rings. The food was the best. Glen says the hamburgers are the best. I love the Bar-b-que. Its a great place to eat.
Just okay
Another one in the chain. Just average. Sometimes very difficult to use the drive-through because of the traffic pattern.
The Munchies done right
Cook out is perfect for the backyard BBQ type of food, cooked in a very fast fashion! They are generous with portions and their Milkshakes are insane!!!!
Quick bite before heading home for winter break
Delicious fast-food with better than average service and choices. Great milkshakes! Always a good choice!
Our first stop in Lynchburg-great food and prices!
The first time we went to Cook-Out it was because we were " new " in town, visiting Lynchburg College and staying out on Wards Rd. Every time we passed Cook-out, any time of day, the line for the drive-in was around the building so we figured we should check it out. Of course, it was packed when we went, but the food is great, the prices are amazing, and it's just a fun, college-town kind of place to eat. Where else can you get a burger, double fries and chocolate shake for like $6-cooked to order?? All the food is great, they have tons of shake flavors, and even when it's crowded there are plenty of places to sit. We go every time we are in Lynchburg now-wouldn't be a trip to LC without a trip to Cookout!
It really tastes like it was cooked on your grill
Fast food that tastes charcoal grilled. I like the onion rings and the oboe or triple burger. Milk shakes are awesome here too and it all is inexpensive...
college hangout
My wife and I ate here on a Friday night. It was very busy and lots of families and college kids as it is located right across from an entrance to Liberty. There were many options on the menu and the price was fairly cheap. The food was good and they had christian music piped into the dining area.
Business meeting
Great place for a inexpensive lunch or dinner. The food is great and filling. They have locations all over many cities in several states. I make a point to stop on my trips to eat at any location near me. The only down side to this restaurant chain is every time I go to a Cook Out they are always busy inside as much as they are at the drive through. Great place, great price and great customer service every time. Enjoy
College visit
Study the menu before you go in. I know it's hard to believe you get that much food for & 4.99 but you do. The burgers have the best seasoning I've ever tasted at a fast food restaurant.
Eating out
Long line to get food; however, food is cheap and you get a lot of it. Location is not the best and the set up of the drive thru does not allow cars to get in and out of the parking lot easily.
Perfect for large groups of hungry teens!
Our youth group was thrilled when they saw the combo prices and loved the idea of getting two sides in the deal. The cashiers were very helpful and kind. I would suggest splitting a milkshake unless you are very hungry because they are very filling.
Guilty pleasure, again!
Ditch your diet and have a milkshake, BBQ, corndog, onion rings! Nothing fancy, just fast, delicious good old southern food.
So Much Fun!
The Cook-Out is such a fun place to eat with friends and family because the prices are low and the atmosphere is relaxed. The food was good and the shakes were awesome!
