Consistently disappointing experience
We were stupid enough to try this restaurant a second time after having being served undercooked food the last time after waiting for an eternity. This time we deliberately tried to choose more simple dishes that were harder to mess up but after waiting over an hour for our food to be brought to us it was still disappointing. There were only two tables and over six staff. You can only conclude management failures are at the heart of the rot at this restaurant. Anywhere must be better.
Horrible experience. 2 hour wait
What a horrible experience. We went to try their spring special. Waited over 2 hours for food. Restaurant was not busy. The food was highly average and the waiters and mangers were no where to be seen. We were not the only table to complain. I don't recommend this restaurant at all.
Small Portions
Out of all the Restaurants in Dullstroom Dunkeld 1883 was by far the worst. I actually laughed when I saw the plates. The portions are minuscule. Half of the table ordered the mango trout dish and it was literally the smallest trout I've ever seen. a few french fries and let me not even mention the " salad ". I am not one to moan, but this was an absolute rip off. Everyone left the restaurant still hungry. I asked for vegetarian options and was told there is nothing, the dinner menu only has trout. We also ordered cheesecake for dessert and it was sour, these were replaced, but my goodness this was terrible food experience. The waiters are kind, but I think the kitchen could use help. Kindly review your portions and look into adding vegan / vegetarian options on the menu.
Amazing restaurant
Best Restaurant in Dullstroom! The food was amazing! Service was impressive, the staff are so friendly and accommodating. Ambiance is great. I will definitely recommend this restaurant
Good food
I had the Eisbein which was not to bad and the girls had spaghetti bolognaise which was very tasty and loaded with cheese on top. Good value
The best
What a lovely surprise it was to dine here. The prices are good value for money, and the food was excellently prepared.
A disastrous and stressful visit
The negatives are too numerous to mention in detail. To name a few: Placed in an uncompleted and poorly designed 'luxury' chalet on a building site. No help with moving to a new room. Food delivered cold and at the wrong time. Although the Manager was on site, he never came to see us even though we asked for him. Head office responded to our complaints with a free stay (not a chance!) but not interested in hearing our story or getting advice. We couldn't wait to leave and will not return. The total indifference of all the staff, except for an Assistant Manager, to our problems and complaints, was the worst we have ever experienced in over 60 years of travelling.
Unhygienic
We were served breakfast from dirty plates and utensils, the service was pretty much non existent and our complaint towards the unwashed plate and spoon fell on deaf ears
Great experience and delicious food
We had two dinners and one breakfast at the restaurant. All the food was fantastic and pretty good value for money. We had steak the first night which was really well cooked.
Breakfast Buffet
Love the full continental buffet breakfast, with a wide variety of hot and cold breakfast options with a good selection of juices as well as teas and coffees. Helpful staff
A week away with family!
We decided to do lunch at the 1883 restaurant. We wanted to sit outside and enjoy the great view! It's peaceful. The trees and man made ponds are just to die for. A glass of Rose' is just what the doctor ordered. They do this poitjie dish that goes down very well with my wine of course! The staff is great and thanks for the home made bread😍. See you in September!
Its absolutly okay
I would rate it between 3 and 4. Service was very good and food was okay, no it was good.. not excellent but good.
Light lunch
Food portions are big and tasty. Sitting at a table with a view and enjoying the food. Whole family loved the food and service.
Mouth Watering breakfast buffet not to be missed. Chefs in this area knows their story with the pot and pans
The restaurant is clean and welcoming with TV's all around. Good and lovely meals is served here and you really will enjoy every bit of what you will eat here.
Beautiful scenery
We stayed at Dunkeld Estate during the long weekend at the end of April - we received really friendly service from the hotel staff and the scenery is just breathtaking. There's a good selection of wines available and the food was great. The buffet breakfasts was not exceptional but still very nice. We will definitely return to 1883 and Dunkeld in future.
Shocker
My parents visit every year and this year they decided to bring friends with them. We ordered wine and drinks. Wine was just brought to table and the waiter left with out presenting wine or pour it in. We ordered our food at 19:30 food came out at 21:00 the sides were different from what we ordered. One order was completely incorrect. The two orders of trout on the grill was so dry it could have been chalk. We told the waiter the issues he brings the shift manager and he apologises and so they bring another manager her name is Anne or something like that and tell us oh there was no other customers that complained but yeah we aren't that type of people. She tells don't worry your bill is sorted. As we walk out she says oh I thought you would atleast pay for your drinks!!! I worked in the front of house and this was just completely unprofessional!!
Absolute Gem
What an absolute gem! Service was great. Ambience was great... but the food.. beyond words. We had the trout with stuffed mango and calamari steak with cherry. To die for. An absolute must visit.
Again... terrible
Do they even have staff??? After 10min of waiting... we left and then staff popped out.. not even apologetic.. case of i have to work but I really don't want to...
Convenient eating on the estate
Very average restaurant with average service. Menu could be better as could the wine stock. But more convenient than driving into the town for a meal after dark.
Excellent dinner
We are regulars at Dunkeld and we at here. The service was good, but not entirely engaged. You had to keep waving to get attention while there were 3 people on duty and only 5 tables with people. They did however take enough interact when they got around to it. The food was excellent though. We had a prawn dish and a trout salad. Both very nice and the staff were great at advising on the options. The restaurant just lacks atmosphere. The old restaurant had so much more character. The restaurant can be great with attention to details.
2 hours wait for food
We waited 2 hours for our food. Although it tasted great the experience was spoilt by waiting so long. Paying R189 for a stake would gave been acceptable if the service was great. They did not have enough menus and offerd a table of 4 only 1 menu.
Bad 1883
Crumbed chicken liver starter awesome, snails tasteless, greek salad served with no olives or feta, prawns main cold, carpetbagger fillet very chewy and sinewy. Maybe why the place was empty? Not a good experience for a fairly pricey establishment.
Worst service EVER!
We ordered chicken burgers. After having to wait for 45 minutes, the waitress came to inform us the buns are old, and they must drive to town to go and buy fresh ones. I then asked to speak to the manager. He told us he only gets bread once a week, on Thursdays, and only alternative is homemade bread, to which we agreed. 30 minute later the " burgers " arrived with a paper-thin chicken breast which was as dry as biltong. They serve the burger with chips, but don't have ANY condiments to put on the chips, not even plain tomato sauce!?!?
Divine Dunkeld
Best hidden gem of Dullstroom! 100% worth turning off the main road. Freshly baked bread is a must, we even ordered a whole loaf at the end of our dinner. So good! Good variety wine list. Also a must: the spa!!! Little " pods " for couples or friends to get some pampering done together. Absolute MUST!
Big disappointment
They botched up our reservation to start with, blaming it on the resort's reception. The restaurant has the ambience of an American diner or delicatessen. Very bright lights, also (or especially) during dinner! The name suggests an historic ambience and menu, but there is none. There is a fireplace, but there are no tables near it. No tablecloths, small paper napkins. Get the picture? The food was good - too good for the venue. If you can bear the bright lights and being surrounded by empty shelves and tables, I suggest you eat the trout main course. This is prime trout area and at least they got that right on the menu. The wine list is well rounded but well over-priced. The Knorhoek wines served as housewines are drinkable and were priced reasonably. Our waitress was Angela. She made an attempt to do a recovery after an initial booking error and sheer disappointment with the lack of ambience. Her attempt deserves a mention. But it was clear she had no management backing. My advice? Don't go there. Rather eat at one of the many really fine restaurants in Dullstroom.
