A wonderful " old school " ski lodge
The lodge is an " old school " ski lodge. It has a nice common area where guests can mingle around a wood fireplace. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. Martin is a consummate host making all of his guests feel welcome. We stayed over a Saturday night during ski season and he hosted a bonfire with beverages. A generous continental breakfast was served every morning. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Cool place, great vibe
Great ski lodge a short walk from the Red base lodge. Great overall vibe. This is what ski lodges are supposed to be. Not for those looking for a generic hotel experience. Loved the common area, fireplace, and the sauna. Room was basic but did the job.
A wonderful unique stay!
Had the most amazing stay during Rossland Winterfest. Incredible host, breakfast, soft bed, sauna, drinks out back at the " saloon " with the amazing host, Martin. Walking distance to the hill and the Josie. An incredible time, we will be back!!
Funky, comfortable, and complete with key amenities
This multi level, many rooms B & B is full of character and for our 5 night stay, lovely guests ranging from couples like us, to families, to singles. Our walk to the slopes was extremely easy. The entrance room to leave skis then walk into a furnished basement with a pool table where boots dried each night was perfect. The living area where a fulfilling buffet breakfast is laid out includes a comfy couch and chairs and a beautiful fire each morning and evening. One night we brought pizza back and watched old Warren Miller ski movies with other guests. Up another level where most rooms are, ours was cozy in size so my morning yoga was in the walk-in basement and to myself less a curious cat. But the dressers was sufficient and a bar size fridge and private bath is a plus for us. Bed was quite comfortable. Hot water for showers. The place was quiet each evening by 10pm latest. Hot tub and sauna- what more do you need? The Host, Martin, is pleasant and ensures his guests are content. He even builds fires outside which the young families enjoyed.
Love, love, love!
Had the best time at the Ram's Head Inn. First trip to RED mountain and wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else. Coolest hot tub I have ever seen!! The beds are super comfy and the rooms are so cozy. Love that this place is pet friendly and there are lots of dogs to pet. The complimentary breakfast is very good and the common area is a great place to meet new people. Amazing, friendly staff. Please note: if you are a snob who likes fancy hotels this is not the place for you, go stay at The Josie. However, if you are a fun loving person who wants to socialize and have a unique hotel experience you will love this spot!
Loved it!
Hard to find Spots like this n this day and age of Corporate controlled World we naively have embraced. Reminded me of Jasper in the 70's very Chill Town too the Skiing art Reds old School also with very challenging terrain and beginner friendly runs in equal parts.
What I picture in my mind when I imagine a ski lodge
I stayed at the Ram's Head Inn while I was on a solo ski trip to attend a camp. I chose it because it was close to the base of Red Mountain - a place I'd never been to before. I didn't have a vehicle so I would be walking where ever I needed to go. I found the Inn to be very comfortable and quiet. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the mountain base. It is also about a 5 minute walk to two restaurants. From the base of Red Mountain, there is a free shuttle into the town of Rossland. I had read a review that stated that the rooms were small so I expected to be cramped. I requested a queen bed room. It was perfectly sized for me. I would have been fine with my husband in the room with me had he been able to come. My trip was brief so I had no need to completely unpack. If I had stayed longer, I would have appreciated some drawers to store items. Closet space was adequate. There was also a piece of furniture that had shelves that I could have used as well. A television was on top of that. I didn't eat breakfast so cannot address it, but the coffee I had each morning was very good. The public space was really nice and inviting. I would stay here again.
Very small rooms, seemingly over-rated.
The main issue with this " Inn " is the room size. For north american ski accommodation the rooms are very small - you can't comfortably fit gear for two people in the rooms we had. The double bed + single bed arrangement doesn't help if you're a couple and you can forget about fitting three people in. The service was also mediocre - especially considering the rates aren't that cheap. We struggled to find someone to help us after our first day skiing and the guy who checked us out was completely clueless. Seemingly unable to check our payment details, he finally realized we needed to pay on departure. Also worth noting that our rooms weren't obviously cleaned during our stay and our towels weren't replaced. Nobody bothered clearing the ice between the building and the outdoor hot tub either, and that was after several days without snow... On the plus side, the included breakfast wasn't bad, the shared lounge area is very pleasant and the location to the mountain is easily walkable. Still - if i was in the area again i'd much rather drive from somewhere further afield and have a reasonably sized room and better service.
Rams Head
Room was very small but clean. There were no tissues in the room and no where to hang anything in the bathroom. The hot breakfast was very nice with fresh fruit and lots of other cold choices. The lodge is out from town but the setting is a nice natural area.
Mountain bike adventure
Was rained out for camping and checked into The RAMs head last minute. It is comfortable and convenient to RED Mountain Ski area. A small drive to town. Classic Chalet common area with high ceilings, big windows, wood decor, fire place, leather couches and a nice breakfast area. The staff are very kind and friendly. Rooms were comfortable and spacious, lots of hot water. Look forward to a visit in the winter. Glad to stumble upon this Inn. Thank you.
Excellent bed and breakfast inn
Cannot say enough great things about this inn. Very quaint rooms in a beautiful mountain setting. Quiet and clean. Was great to meet other travelers in the morning over breakfast. Martin prepared a amazing breakfast for us each morning (we stayed three nights delicious bacon and eggs; fried tomatoes, toast, cereal, yogurt, and fresh fruit! Coffee was great and the orange juice tasted like fresh squeezed. He was so helpful and gave us some places to check out. Definitely will be back again to stay!
Clean and comfortable
Spent one night here on a road trip. Lodge was lovely from the outside, like a huge log cabin. Room was small and a bit outdated, but perfectly clean. Bed was very comfortable, shower had good water pressure. Internet and cable both good. Hot breakfast was included, egg, bacon, hashbrowns, and sliced avocado which was a surprising treat that far north in the middle of nowhere! They also had bread, oatmeal, cereal and juice. Lodge was located steps from a local ski hill and the area surrounding it was lovely. Nice quiet little road to go for a walk nearby.
Fantastic place, great staff!
Stayed for two weeks at the Rams Head around new year and i had the most amazing time. The surroundings and the slopes are just amazing, the hotel itself is a big beutiful cabin-like house with lots of nice artwork. The rooms are nice and clean and the beds are god-like after a day on the hill. Martin, the owner, serves a nice homemade breakfast every morning and helps you with whatever you might need even if you're just looking for some tip on where to go skiing for the specific day. The fact that you also can bring your dog is just awesome. I would definitely recommend the Rams Head to anyone that is looking for a nice place to stay even if you're just staying the night. Looking forward to coming back in the summertime!
Rustic in on the mountain
This 70's built Inn is just what we were looking for. Basic and cozy. Felt a little like staying in a European hostel. Our single queen room was a good size with our own bathroom and little fridge. The room and water temperature control were a bit challenging but generally, if you're looking for a ski lodge, we'd recommend the Ram's Head. A five minute walk to the ski lifts.
amazing stay
Loved our stay!!! Great rooms, chocolate fondue at night, and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend as this is our second stay. The hot tub was amazing and the boot driers for our ski boots was appreciated.
Will go back every year
Had the pleasure of visiting Rossland and staying at the Ram's Head Inn last August and we absolutely fell in love with the place. Martin the owner and caretaker was fantastic. He cooked us a great breakfast every morning and on the last day when we were leaving he made us a boccocini, basil and tomato sandwich for the road. Rooms were spacious for us two and we really enjoyed drinking some wine on our balcony. Highly recommend visiting Rossland and staying at the Ram's Head.
We came a guests and left as friends
We came a guests and left as friends. Thanks Martin for hosting and make us feel at home during our stay. Rooms are basic, clean with comfy beds, real fire place, daily changing breakfast, wooden hot tub, sauna, pool table, board games. Dog friendly. Great location, almost ski-in-ski-out. We will be back.
The Charm of a Bed and Breakfast
We absolutely loved our stay at the Rams Head Inn. After a busy road trip filled with standard hotels it was so nice to stay somewhere so charming. Martin, the owner of the inn, was extremely friendly and accommodating. Immediately when we arrived he offered us a cold beer-not many hotels where you can find that anymore! We were shown to our suite, and we're immediately blown away. For the same price that we were paying for your standard two queens bed hotel rooms, we were given a full suite complete with two bedrooms, a full kitchen and dining room, and a full living room! It was so nice to have the space. We enjoyed a fun evening down in the rec room of the inn, where there is a pool table, darts, Nintendo Wii and other games for guests to use! The best part of our stay, though, was when Martin actually made us breakfast! It was so nice-a delicious breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. Thank you, Martin, for the awesome stay. It was so nice to have someone care so much about us during our stay!
Nice stay
We stayed June 13 after golfing at Redstone. True it's a little dated but very clean and quiet in June as we were the only guests. Good price and the breakfast was hot and delicious! TV and WiFi worked great. The common room and breakfast room were super quaint and pleasant.
Jim & Toby
My teenage daughter and I spent 2 weeks at the Ram's Head in January and totally enjoyed our experience. Getting up in the morning to a great breakfast and friendly staff made the day always start on the right note. Being there for 2 weeks we began to feel like we were part of a family. The location is stellar with only a short walk up to Red. The community dining area was really cool for my daughter as she was able to meet and discuss skiing with folks from all over the globe.
Local lodge favorite
My husband and I have been returning to the Ram's Head Inn for the past 15 years. We live across the border in Spokane, WA and the 3-hour drive makes this an easy weekend destination. The lodge has 15 rooms, a great room with fireplace and eating area and a large outdoors hot tub. The yummy breakfasts are eaten together with other guests, most often coming in from other parts of Canada and Europe to ski Red Mountain. The lodge is near the base of Red so a short walk through the woods with one's skies is very doable. The hosts are friendly and accommodating, making this a perfect stay for a ski weekend and so much more than just another hotel room in-town.
On-hill Accommodation with great breakfast and friendly hosts!
Rams Head Inn provides on-hill accommodation with great breakfasts (daily) and friendly hosts! Cozy place with a games room (pool table, tv, etc) and storage area with boot dryers for your gear in the basement. Only a few minute walk to the Red Mountain base area (you just have to walk through the parking lots). The room is basic but overshadowed by the extras the Inn has to offer - free coffee & tea 24 / 7, delicious breakfasts to get you going (lasted me all day!), games room, and great outdoor hot tub!!! The hosts are super friendly and so helpful. If you're worried about staying in the town of Rossland, don't. There is a free shuttle bus that operates throughout the day, and all the Apres Ski happens at Red Mountain at Rafters - only a few minute walk for you!
Best breakfast in town
Recently spent a week here skiing with friends and celebrating a birthday. Walking distance to the lifts and a wonderful common area to share stories with a big warm fire. Martin and Michel offer a complete hot fresh cooked meal each morning with eggs, muffins, amazing fresh fruit, cereal, juice and more. Will definitely return!
Tahnee
It was comfortable and lovely to say the least. Me and the family felt at home and had a lovely week of skiing and relaxing. Rooms felt spacious and breakfast was generous. In comparison to previous stays in the area, value for money and the services received was beyond expectations. I can strongly recommend and hope to be back next year for more quality time with the family and another relaxing holiday.
Loved this place
We arrived in town late and needed a place to stay. We loved it. A huge room (although a bit dated), lovely views, a big comfy bed and a sensational, freshly cooked breakfast. We'd definitely stay here again
Warm and Inviting!
My husband and I come here every January for the boutique feel at the Red Mountain. Even though it is not ski in (you can ski across the parking lot if you really want to :)), it is only a 2 minute or less walk to the bottom of the chair lift. Our dog and us always feel welcome here every year and enjoy the hot breakfast each morning. Well worth our budget and we recommend this place to anyone.
A peace of my heart belongs to Rams Head Inn BC
I love this place. It has a Peace of my HEART. I visit Rams Head Inn almost every winter. Great friendly staff. Great location. 3 minutes walk from the lifts. Wonderful breakfast. Nice clean rooms. The lodge was cosy and nice. I recommend this Place for everyone, I heard that they are contruction a an montailbike trail round the hotel opening in summer. I will be back in summer for mountainbiking with my friends. and of cource next winter.
Terrible
Worst start to our trip ever. Arrived and within 4 hours was bitten by managers dogs and had to be taken to the local hospital. Dog bit 4 people in one night. Aside from that, the lodge was tired and outdated. Only positive was great breakfast and wonderful chef. Don't stay there, stay at the red mountain apartments. Same price, closer to the mountain, much nicer and no dogs.
Cheap but wouldn't have picked it if I had alternatives
Good value for money but otherwise I didn't enjoy my stay at all. Cons: decor of early 2000 (if that!), bathroom drains all clogged (sink and bathtub), location, bad mattress / pillows (bring your own if you can). We stayed here 5 nights last week as we were skiing at Red. Our CAT skiing reservations were made last minute and this place was the only place still available. Location: not ski in / ski out as some of the apartments - you'll need to walk across the parking lot, cross the road and across another small parking lot. Not a lot of parking in front of the lodge either - think they had 14 rooms and maybe enough space for 6 cars at best? Rooms: where do I start. 2 things I value most from accommodation - cleanliness and sleep quality. Towels were changed upon request but if you leave the room after late morning, they wont tidy up the room. The decor is old and dim, curtains were half falling off their fixings. The room was big and had 2 double beds in it, so you could fit in a family with kids if you wanted. Mattress was soft and the pillows were - flat. I've never been a tough customer when it comes to hotels and their beds but I found myself waking up with sore upper shoulder / neck every single night I stayed there (and I travel frequently for my work so I've stayed at a fair number of different hotels - and have NEVER woken up with sore necks ever). Sink and bathtubs were always clogged and the sink had stains and gunk stuck to it. Breakfast: breakfast is only served 7:30-8:30, eggs, bacon, sausages, cereal. Amenities: pool table and room for skis in the basement.
People and Animal Friendly
Every year I like to make at least one trip to Rossland for skiing. From now on, if I need to stay the night in Rossland, you will find me soaking in the Ram's Head Inn hot tub. Not only are the owners friendly, but the hotel is dog friendly! If you're not an animal lover, don't be turned off. You would never even know animals were allowed in the rooms by how clean it is kept. I was travelling with a friend that has terrible animal allergies and they did not flare up at all while staying there. Great place, great location - highly recommended.
Great quiet place
Stayed one nite march 31 2012. Got there early that morning and we were allowed to park in lot even though check in at 3:00. Got to leave vehicle there on day 2 as we went cat skiing and they were expecting a big party. Didn't eat breakfast because we had to leave early but it looked good. Owners were very polite and accommodating. Nice and quiet. Easy access off highway and red mountain. More like a big cabin or lodge feeling. Quiet time at 10:00 was awesome because we were there to ski not party. Stay again in summer. Room was clean. Everything we needed was in room. Thanks again for your hospitality. Shelby
Low key, nothing fancy, loved it!
If you are looking for a brand new luxury place to stay this is not it. But if you are looking for warm, homey and comfortable then this is the place. Simple room, great cheap breakfast, nice hot tub and sauna. Close to the mountain and half the price. Everyone was so nice as well. Actually everyone we ran into all over Rossland was friendly and helpful. Hoping to go back for longer next year.
DID NOT LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS
The Ram's Head Inn is a charming quaint place conveniently located at the base of Red Mountain. However, the place in need of serious TLC! With many months of advance reservation, three of us arrived in the early evening (early March 2012) to cat ski for two days (not consecutive) and also make turns at either Red or Whitewater. Keys were not ready or available right away - we were handed one key (no ring or string or anything) and told to come back later for other keys. We walked in and there were only two towels (they knew three of us would be staying; there was a half full roll of TP in the bathroom with no extra; one of the light bulbs was out in the light on the table and we had to ask for a new light bulb. Their is a switch that apparently keeps the tiny refer in the room going with a note to keep the switch in the on position; it was in the on position but the refer had been unplugged so we had to wait hours for it to chill - and it was filthy inside; the drapes on one window were in poor condition - did not open or close and had strings hanging there - looked really ragged and the other was on metal rings on a rod that was unstable. There was no soap provided; instead there were dispensers of soap on the wall by sink and in shower - but shower gel was empty! There is no type of cleaning service provided at the Ram's Head whatsoever while you are there - the boot & glove dryers in the lower level of the lodge barely circulated any air and worked marginally. The basement area that they claim is to play pool and watch the big screen, etc. (equipment room?) was a bit of a pit - cold and dirty - do not know why anyone would hang down there! We asked a couple of times what the weather was expected to be and always got a " I have no idea " answer. I know it's the mountains and things change - but really - for a lodging establishment to have no idea what it is expected or predicted to be? Then, the topper was that cat skiers were to have breakfast at 7:30 (even though we had to be a 6 minute walk way by 8:00 a. m. to check in) ; if you didn't cat ski they requested that you wait to eat at 8. The breakfast is a good one for the price, but the meats were not thoroughly cooked. The second morning, when we did not cat ski, we accommodated their request and came down at 8 - most of the hot food was gone and not to be replaced! They said - we thought you were cat skiing! There was simply no communication of any sort at this place and the folks at the desk - surprisingly Martin and Pam who were so good communicating on email -- seemed to be on holiday while we were there. They were nice enough for sure, but just not in tune with the guests and their needs. We may return, but it will be only after we've checked all other availability - the place just doesn't seem to be taken care of! Very sad to see the deterioration and service at what could be such a charming place all around! Rossland so desperately needs some affordable but good and comfortable accommodations!
Annual Event
I have stayed at this inn annually, along with other members of my son's boarding team for the past three years. The service has always been above and beyond, and the facilities have suited the families very well. The drying room in the lowest level also includes a pool table and large screen tv with Wii for the kids. The main lodge area has a fire place and seating for informal gatherings. The team parents really get gods user of this gathering area in the evenings for wine and card games. The banquet table is used for pizza dinners for the kids. The breakfasts are always enough to keep us going until lunch. The rooms are clean and vary in size, depending on your needs. My only complaint would be that I always ended up timing my showers poorly, so I was competing for the hot water supply with the cat skiiers. : ( Location, drying room with kids stuff, gathering room, hot tub, individual rooms and service all more than met our needs.
Not likely to stay again
Our family (Grandparents, parents and 2 kids under 6) stayed over the family day long weekend. Having spent lots of time at Red Mountain and in other accomodation, we were thoroughly disappointed. We rented a two bedroom with kitchenette. While there was plenty of room to sleep, there was not a sense of care put into our place. There were large windows missing drapery and therefore a total lack of privacy. We had access to another ajoining room which should have been locked off and was odd that that wasn't taken care of. The kitchenette was really poorly supplied. No pots, no glasses etc. There were 2 burners on the stove to use but no way of cooking really. There wasn't a can opener or other things to allow you to cook. The frying pans were all bent and useless Thankfully we brought a crockpot. There were no additional garbage bags or towels (3 towels provided for a family of 6??). Also, for a ski condo, why would you NOT have anywhere to hang stuff. Literally, there is not one hook to hang wet gear on to dry. We would not stay again and were disappointed with the lack of care for simple things to make ones stay more cozy. For what they charged per night, thanks but no thanks.
Good place next to the slopes
If you are reading this review and hope it will have you to decide whether to stay at this place, first you have to determine what you are after at Red Mountain and what is important to you. Luxury accommodation it is not! However, if you need a place to stay close to the slopes, and if you want it to have a nice feel and be run by friendly and helpful people, this is your place! My son and I stayed there for 5 days while skiing at Red Mountain in December 2011. The room was small, but it was enough for us. The breakfast was sufficient to keep you skiing at least till lunch time. Ski storage and boot / glove dryers are something more important for me at a ski vacation than a large room. Martin and Pam (the two people running Ram's Head Inn) were very helpful in accommodating our needs. And it takes only 4-5 minutes to walk to the ski lifts from the Inn's backyard. How nice is that? If I ever plan another ski vacation at Red (and I hope I will), I would not hesitate a second before booking my lodging at Ram's Head Inn again! Martin and Pam, thanks for your hospitality!
Great Place for a Get-Away
I've stayed at this inn with my family on several occasions. Primarily this place is a ski lodge at Red Mountain during the winter months, but in the summer it is a quiet and relaxing home away from home. The staff is friendly and the inn is very cozy. It is pet and kid friendly which was a real bonus as our most recent visit included two newborns, a four year old, and a dog, as well as 3 teenagers and 12 adults. There is a cedar hot tub in the back, a games room downstairs, and it is located near lots of hiking and biking trails. If you're really lucky, a hike in the right spot might find you right in the middle of a patch of plump, juicy huckleberries. I was a little disappointed that breakfast wasn't offered during the summer months, but if you ask nicely, you might be able to use the dishes and make your own meals if you're trying to keep costs down; just be sure to wash up when you're done. There are also some great little cafes and restaurants in the area that you can visit for a meal. I especially recommend a trip down the mountain into Trail for dinner at The Colander, don't even bother opening the menu, just order the special and make sure you have a healthy appetite.
Not well run
My husband and I stayed here on July 13th. We may have been the only ones there, as it was quite empty. I was a little hesitant about staying here because of the trouble I had when booking. I had filled out a booking request on their website. I received a quick reply telling me I had to give a credit card deposit. I e-mailed back with my phone number and asked them to call me so that we could do it over the phone. I never received a call. A few days later I e-mailed again and asked if they had a problem calling me, as I had never heard from them. Again, no reply. I gave up on booking this place, but my husband decided to try again a few weeks later because it was close the Rock Cut Pub, which has the best chicken wings in BC. This time he successfully booked by giving his credit card details on-line. So then I wasn't surprised when we arrived around 3 p. m. on the 13th and there was absolutely no one there. The office door was closed and locked, with a business card on it saying to call if no one was there. We called the number 5-6 times and kept getting an answering machine. We left a few messages. Finally, after about 15 minutes a car pulled up and the two owners came rushing in. They had gone into town to deal with something. I'm not quite sure why the BOTH of them had to go, but there you have it. They were certainly friendly enough, but you could tell they had very limited experience in running this kind of establishment. We were given the keys to a room on a lower floor, and I asked why we couldn't have a higher floor. So then we got the higher floor, but when we went inside there were no hand towels, etc. The room was HUGE, which we appreciated, and everything was clean. But the service really needs to improve.
Scandinavian style in the heart of British Columbia
I was greeted with genuine warmth-it was like stepping into someone's home, cozy, log fire burning, simple, stylish elegance, the owner sat with us & spent over an hour explaining the local area, places to go, see, etc. The following morning, the cooked breakfast was exactly what was needed for a long day of skiing, fresh cooked oatmeal, eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, potatoes, tea, coffee, juice, you name it, they had it. The Inn itself is surrounded by several acres of woods, so offers an air of privacy, yet it took exactly 3 minutes to walk to the chair lift! After a long day of skiing, we returned to the Ram's Head Inn for a long soak in their traditional wooden hot tub, followed by a sauna, recommended to us by the hospitable Swedish owner. We are definitely returning there next ski season, highly recommended!
Loved the Ram's Head, the hosts and location make for a great experience!
Just spent part of the first week of February at the Ram's Head and loved it. The hospitality shown by the hosts was great. As soon as we arrived Sven started a roaring fire in the main room of the lodge for us to enjoy after a long day of skiing, a perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink before heading out to one of the restaurants within walking distance from the lodge (I would recommend Gypsy). The next morning we woke to the smell of an amazing breakfast being prepared by Janet downstairs in the kitchen. It was served promptly at 8:00am with more than enough choice to make everyone happy and get you ready for the short walk to the lifts at Red Mountain. Special thanks to Kevin. Ski storage and boot dryers are conveniently located in the basement to get your gear ready for another great day on the slopes. Don't forget to end your day in the hot tub in the back yard which is a nice nature setting where you can relax and rest sore legs from the steeps at Red. Next time I am in Rossland, I'll be staying at the Ram's Head again.
An excellent place to stay
Had an excellent stay here when visiting Red Mountain. Everyone at the inn were extremely friendly and helpful to ensure we had a great stay. The breakfast each morning was extraordinary! Location is a very short walk to the lifts and close to some very good restaurants. Would highly recommend the inn.
Perfect spring break getaway!
We really enjoyed our stay at this place. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The huge king size bed was amazing and the teak tub was so relaxing after a day on the steep slopes of Red Mt.. The breakfast was great and so was the price ($5). Food choices in town and around the mountain are limited and expensive. I recommend packing a lunch to take the lodges at the hill. $6 beers (any kind!) and $11 sandwiches are crazy prices considering how much you already pay for a day pass at Red Mt. They are a pet-friendly which was great since we were traveling with our dogs. We will definitely stay there again and hope to do so soon!
Great breakfast and friendly staff
Having reserved a room last fall after having read varied comments about the place, we were pleasently surprised about the friendly and professional welcome and the great breakfast. I stayed there three years ago and found some nice improvement, especially the dining room. Hope that the new owners Mara, Sven and Martin will further improve it without increasing the price. Looking forward to coming back! Nicole and Johan
Felt Like Home
My husband and I booked here for valentines weekend. We prefer a cozy inn to a fancy hotel so we were excited about our stay. When we arrived we were really pleased with the location (you can see the lifts) as well as the style of the Inn. It was rustic and warm. The gal that greeted us was exceedingly friendly. She took us on a mini tour of the facilities and then showed us to our room. The room was very spacious with big windows and an amazingly comfortable king size bed complete with down comforter and down pillows. We upgraded our room a little so we had the balcony and a larger room, great for $115. I have seen many people complaining about the cleanliness. People, this is a ski town, and an older inn, its not going to have brand new pristine carpet! Our room was cleaned and taken care of everyday. The five dollar breakfast was superb. I expected a small spread but they had everything you could want and who ever was cooking knew what they were doing. Very impressed with the food. The dining area as well was very cozy with a fireplace and a large family size table. It was a warm family oriented atmosphere which suited my husband and I wonderfully. For the skiers we really appreciated that there was a room at the bottom level of the lodge, with outside access, that had a bathroom, tv room and racks for skis and snowboards as well as a boot dryer. Come in from skiing hang up your stuff, take off your boots, and walk up to your room through the hotel. What a wonderful addition it was. We skied three days and spent a decent amount of time at our lodge and had a wonderful warm vacation. Highly recommend this inn to easy going friendly people who just want to ski!
The Perfect SKI Lodge for People who like People
After reading mixed reviews, I was a bit concerned, but my experience at the Inn was just awesome. Not sure about the staff problems reported, since we found them to be nothing but welcoming and very helpful. Part of the fun of ski vacations is the discussions of the days runs and sharing the excitement of new snow with strangers that soon feel like friends. Not deluxe, but the Rams head is more than comfortable. Clean room, comfy bed, nice little extras (we had a balcony, pleasant room, bar-fridge, inroom coffee, etc), wifi in room. The breakfast was amazing (was served from 8-8:30am) and one of the best I have ever had for $5. Loved that it was served in a restricted time - was hot, fresh and lots of good ski talk around the table. Hot tub is a neat wooden one outside with great trees and snow surrounding. It was hot and clean. Much nicer than the one we had the night before in a Red Condo. Inn is just a 2 minute walk to the lifts. Perfect location for people who are more concerned with fresh powder, chatting with fellow skiers, a comfy lodge feel than luxury surroundings. No valets here! I found the $120 to be a super deal for the proximity to the lifts, sweet lodge and great breakfast. Would certainly return.
Great place - go there if you can!
What a wonderful location to spend vacation. Great value, the rooms were comfortable, clean and nice, beds super comfortable! The people working here are friendly, upbeat and helpful.. one of the best parts is breakfast... yum, yum, yum. You feel like you are staying in well-appointed guest room at a friend's house.
Bad
When I went to check in there was only some guy in the office that didn't know anything. Our key was in an envelope near the front door with room no. and insteuctions where the room was. The room smelled bad. I ask the guy for some ice and he said there was none. I ask where there was a place for dinner and he said we would have to drive in to town but we found a place 200 yards away. The lobby had stuff scattered around like someone was living in it. We did not stay for breakfast as we had enough of a bad deal. After I had been to the room I told the guy it was not what I was told it would be and he would not answer me. There was no one around when we left. I would not stay in this bed and breakfast ever again.
look elsewhere
Red is a great hill and skiing there was a joy, so we will be back. Although we will be looking for a different place to stay! There were some good aspects to the inn: -it's location at the base of the hill -the great breakfast spreads -some free ski passes added as a perk But these goodies could not make up for the disappointing: -the dirty, smelly hot tub that gave my husband and I skin infections (rashes and folliculitis) that we are still suffering from days later... -the dated rooms (pink sink and toilet, holes in the walls, baseboards ripped out with nails hanging, dirty carpet) -and a host that was hot and cold (nice one moment, rude the next) that gave you the impression she would rather be anywhere but there! We usually stay in moderately priced B & B's or rustic inns like this one when we are on a ski holiday and consider ourselves pretty easy going. If the bed is firm, the room is clean and the host makes us feel at home then the review is good. This one fell short enough that I would tell friends and family to steer clear.
A good place to stay - very close to the slopes
There had been some mixed comments on the Inn, and so I was a little hestitant. Those fears were allayed as soon as I walked up the half-log steps, and to the big double doors with rams horns for a handle. Olga was terrific. She showed us around the inn, and then to our rooms. She accomodated my vegetarian breakfast needs, and made sure I knew the location of the short path through the woods that exits in the Red Mountain ski resort parking log. The teak hot tub was nice. We got a standard queen room, which was clean and simple. The standard room is on the small side. If you plan on staying in the room much and like to have more room, I recommend upgrading. There was a small flatscreen color TV, a nice clock radio alarm, small refrigerator, and coffee / tea maker.
Third Class Everything
I cannot understand the previous 5 star ratings... Maybe Ram's Head has just plummeted in terms of quality in the months since the last review. What a horrible place. WE were there for a wedding and all guests that I consulted were taken aback by 1) the filth of the place (e. g. one hotel room had a serious problem with a fly infestation 2) the lack of comfort at the place (rooms are substandard, the carpets are old and dingy etc) 3) the surliness and laziness of the hotel staff (e. g. when asked to correct the fly problem with vacuuming, they just shrugged and actually did not fix it.... AND they did not clean the rooms during the day at all!!)) 4) the sheer rudeness of the staff (they were overheard growling at children, not knowing parents were in earshot. When asked for anything, their responses verged on hostile. Not to mention the fact that I phoned about 5 times to make a booking - and noone was ever there! The hotel is NOT service oriented - and yet they charge not inconsiderable rates! I would not recommend the Ram's Head to anyone. I hope construction developments that are underway in the area produce a new hotel that results in its rapid demise.
welcoming and comfortable
Stayed for 3 days and loved it. Will return again next year for sure. Our King / Queen room was large, beds very comfy and bathroom area quite spacious. Well appointed, clean and although a very old building, there had obviously been recent refurbishment. (good TV and a min fridge) excellent breakfast, buffet style, and varied with choices re fruit, rolls, pastries, hot dishes.. delicious. (We didn't find that the short window of time - 7:30 to 8:00 forbreakfast was a problem. it suited our schedule perfectly.) This Inn has seen better days in some of its areas but it is truly comfortable and offers all you need. (large ski storage with boot warmers, a hot tub, sauna) You can hike up to the lift on a short trail behind the Inn which takes you to the parking lot. From Toronto, we flew to Kelowna and drove from there.. a long but pretty drive. Dont know how you would get there otherwise although there is a shuttle from Spokane but Iwould still like a car to get around as there isn't muc at the resort itself and you would want to get into Rossland for more variety of restaurants and nightlife.
New owner to be avoided
I have stayed here several times over the years and found it to be a very cordial, comfortable, pretty well appointed and reasonably priced place in close to the slopes at Red Mountain. During the summer of 2007, ownership changed and they created a 3 Br suite, which was advertised as sleeping 10. We (two families) rented this " large " 3 Br suite for a week in February and found it was terrible and the owner largely unresponsive to our complaints, which were: . two of the bedrooms consisted of a bunk bed and nothing else . no dressers, hooks, etc. that are needed to stow gear. The owner added an 8 hook coat rack in the hall and the last day bought two cheap dressers. . The " master " BR (no separate bath-- all 8 of us shared one bathroom) was attached to the tiny living room by glass French doors THAT HAD NO CURTAINS! The owner had curtains installed after the first night. . Overall the apartment had a rough-edged, cobbled together feel that was not at all up to the previous owners' standars or those f the other rooms. . Housekeeping was not done regularly at all, was poorly done when done at all. . Bunk beds were terrible-- we discovered on the last morning that my son was sleeping on a BOX SPRING the whole week!!! . Breakfast was good but the owner insisted on strictly limiting serving hours to 7:30 (-ish) to 8:00 AM SHARP!. No exceptions. As the lifts did not open until 9 AM, this did not contribute to a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. . We made these complaints known to the owner early and we asked for at least a partial refund of the $425 / night price but she adamantly refused. While some of these problems are peculiar to the start-up of new ownership and the newness of the 3 Br unit, I do not believe that the current owner has the needed traits to makes overnight guests feel welcome or to deal positively and constructively with problems that arise. I will never stay there again and would not advise any friend or foe to do so. advise anyone else to.
A great weekend stay
The Rams Head Inn B & B describes itself as " Rossland's only boutique B & B ". I'm not sure that overall that is how I would describe it at the moment but it has great potential and the common areas are lovely. The breakfasts were good and plentiful being buffet style, but the window for hot food is only 7.30-8 meaning that the breakfast room gets pretty packed. Rose provides a good variety of food, and refreshes the plates regularly ensuring that there is plenty of food for everyone. There are pastries, cereals and fruit as well as usually some pancakes / waffles, eggs etc. There aren't always enough tables in the room though, and we ate a couple of breakfasts from our knees on the sofas. The room we had was pretty tired but nothing that a lick of paint couldn't fix. It was a double ensuite queen room with lovely warm bedding. Our room was nice and warm, and all common areas were warm and clean. Free wifi was available both in our room, and in the dining room allowing us to check out the latest snow reports and weather forecasts. There is ski and snowboard storage downstairs and also boot dryers are provided. The hot tub is a large wooden barrel and was most welcome after a busy day on the slopes. The innkeeper, Matt, was excellent - finding us a table at a nearby restaurant the evening we arrived, providing helpful suggestions. There are also a couple of season passes in the Inn for the ski area which can save you a days lift ticket cost - but you'll need to get in there quickly. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance of the Ram's Head Inn - Rock Cuts, Gabriellas and the excellent Gypsy at Red - but for all other Rossland eateries transport will be required. There is a shuttle bus that operates from Red Mountain to Rossland for $2 - this picks up every 2 hours meaning that you can be stranded if you don't plan carefully.
Awesome
Best hot tub and breakfasts. Truly the BC experience.
New Owner is Amazing
There are many changes taking place at the Inn and the new owner " Rose " is totally amazing. She is a chef and the owner of Idgies Restraunt so she cooks a terrific sunday eggs benny. I think it will be the place to stay in the winter. They will be having free snoshoe nights and an apres' ski in the Inn. I highly recommend it!
