Great location for view of Sun Moon Lake
Nice view from here of Sun Moon Lake. Temple on a hill. Beautiful complex. First stop at Sun Moon Lake. Plenty to see and experience.
Likely to be your first stop if you are visiting the lake
This is likely to be your first stop if you are visiting Sun Moon Lake. It was stunning. Climb the steps and enjoy the views. More importantly, walk and discover the various parts of the temple. Big. Everytime I thought I had seen everything, I discovered another area. Peaceful suprisingly. I expected a lot of tourists. Clean and well looked after. I suggest having some sort of guide or read up on it before going as information is limited and you will just look. You don't need to cover up or remove your footwear.
Very impressive temple
I was impressed with this temple. The temple, the location and the views overlooking Sun Moon Lake. It is a fairly modern constructed temple but the attention to detail can only be admired, especially the friezes around the walls. I do not subscribe or donate to any religion but as I felt this would be the most special temple on my trip around Taiwan I purchased a hanging good luck charm. If you don't have your own transport then it is very easy to take the public bus from Shuishe or Ita Thao.

小生は、日月潭は、多分, ５回位来ていますが、最近は、雨の日が多いです。女房殿は、合羽を用意して万全の対応です。小生は、ガイドさん説明して戻るまで、控え室や、売店で待機する。この時期、スコールが多く、外で散策するのは、難儀です。
Taoist temple at its best
This is a big temple and very traditional. It was a good vibe with prayers going on and people milling around. It is def worth a visit.
Seeking counsel from Guan Yu
Wen Wu Shrine is dedicated to Guan Yu, a Taoist god who is widely worshipped in Taiwan. He is a deified soldier, who featured in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of China's classic novels. He is God of War and God of Wealth. Other deities are also venerated. There is a celebration of Confucius' birthday. You may see many of the faithful dropping wooden crescents on the floor seeking Guan Yu's wise counsel on whether they should take any step, from a medical proceedure and marriage to opening a business.
廟宇氣恢宏 對望風景好
此行看缺水日月潭, 騎機車往大竹湖潭底草原行進途中, 經過文武廟, 搜尋記憶, 曾經單車環湖, 或開車、泳渡來此, 都是路過不曾駐足, 此行時間還有餘裕, 把握機會停車參觀！ 自台階而上, 廟埕寬敞, 廟宇氣勢恢宏, 一對銅鈴大眼紅色石獅罕見高大, 除了在馬路上就能看到的正殿, 走入後才發現廟宇沿著山坡而建, 其後還有武廟與文廟, 武廟門匾寫著忠義千秋, 旁邊有青龍偃月刀簡介, 供奉的應是三國亂世忠勇重然諾的關公, 因關公講信修義, 除了廟宇常見, 也是民間工商業常在家供奉, 以為典範的代表！ 文廟主祀孔子, 設於武廟之後的山坡更高處, 除了有位階更高的隱喻, 似乎也意謂著 有了文以載道的依歸, 強兵勇武才不至淪為窮兵黷武！ 孔子自春秋亂世列國周遊, 懷抱崇高理想、推銷獨到願景, 當世雖不得其志, 因中心思想有亙古不滅的核心價值, 被推崇為萬世師表！可謂是～ 騎遊日月潭 廟宇氣恢宏 武廟祀關公 文廟祀孔子 途經文武廟 對望風景好 青龍偃月刀 武廟背倚靠 以往皆路過 依山坡而建 忠勇重然諾 崇高的理想 此行暫駐腳 一階一階高 信義的代表 願景有獨到 孔子思想雖有獨到, 傳承後世, 卻也不免被圖騰物化、利用虛實, 若弟子有問, 不知如何看待論述?
GOOD LUCK TEMPLE
Wenwu Temple venerates both the patron gods of civil and martial affairs in the same temple complex.. It is comparatively rare to have temples venerating both. Wen Wu temples were patronised by those in the Ming and Qing dynasties seeking success in the Imperial examinations, which were divided into civil and military examinations. The temple consists of three halls. The first hall, located on the second floor of the front hall, is a shrine devoted to the First Ancestor Kaiji and the God of Literature. The central hall is devoted to Guan Gong, the God of War, and the warrior-God Yue Fei. The rear hall is dedicated to Confucius. In the courtyard between the front hall and middle hall two bronze artwork relief illustrated two groups of occupation. One panel is scholars and literate workers and other panel is the warriors and soldiers. It was very beautiful to see and it places everything in perspective. If I were to take an Imperial examination, I would offer my prayers at the GOOD LUCK TEMPLE.. at Wenwu Temple. Note: The water closet is to the left of the first landing)

文武廟位於日月潭旁, 規模宏大氣勢磅礡, 廟分三殿, 前殿祀開基元祖及文昌帝君等, 中殿是武聖殿, 祀關聖帝君及岳武穆王, 後殿為大成殿, 祀至聖先師孔子等。 文武廟背山面湖, 風景秀麗地勢雄偉, 是附近居民的信仰中心, 登上後殿觀景台視野遼闊, 可以遠眺日月潭, 是極佳的觀潭景點。

In January 2020 my wife and I included a 6 night Wendy Wu private tour of Taiwan as part of our 18 day Asian trip we arranged to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Our Taiwan tour took in Taipei, Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Our time at the beautiful Sun Moon Lake included a most enjoyable visit to the very ornate and impressive Wen Wu Temple on the lake's northern side. The temple consists of three halls. The first hall, located on the second floor of the front hall, is a shrine devoted to the First Ancestor Kaiji and the God of Literature. The central hall is devoted to Guan Gong, the God of War, and the warrior-God Yue Fei. The rear hall is dedicated to Confucius. We visited some lovely temples throughout our Taiwan adventure and we would view the Wen Wu Temple at Sun Moon Lake as one of the best. The temple is built on a hillside. To make for an less strenuous visit we started from the top and climbed down the steps rather than climbing up with our driver picking us up at the lower entrance after our visit. Our visit to the temple commenced from the top of the hill at a rather ornate green stone symmetrical wall with four feature panels and three large openings that lead you to vantage points where imposing views of the Lake can be enjoyed. This wall was flanked by two tall " totem pole " like structures. From here we progressively climbed down steps to the entrance of the temple several metres below visiting each of the temple halls featuring lovely decorated features, one of the best being the statue of Confucius. Along the way we were able to see some exquisite marble engraved panels each having a special story to tell. The carved out people characters appeared so life-like. This was craft work of the highest order. For me these marble engravings were the highlight of our visit. We stood in awe at the tremendous talent of master craftsmen on show here. On reaching the lower main entrance at the bottom of the hill we marvelled at the ornate Gateway and Ceremonial Arch made of green stone. From here we gained further spectacular panoramic views of the picturesque Sun Moon Lake. At the entrance to the front hall there is a huge burner. There are 5 doors to this hall and people do not enter from the central door which is reserved for the gods. People enter from the right door and exit from the left door. The Temple has a very good gift shop which is well worth a visit. There is a wide range of souvenirs available for sale here at fair prices. Unfortunately our time was limited and we were unable to view the renowned Year of Steps at the base of the Temple. The Year of Steps has 366 steps covering a distance of 150-metres symbolizing the 366 days in a year (including an extra day in a leap year) and is worth a visit. Never mind, what we saw and experienced at the Wen Wu Temple was still very enjoyable and memorable.

ツアーで、日月潭とセットで見学しました。台湾大地震後に再建されたそうで、荘厳でであっても、時代を感じさせる物ではありませんでした。柱・天井・壁等の彫刻などの細工も素晴らしく、一見の価値はあると思います。
Prachtige tempel
Deze tempel ligt aan de weg rondom het Sunmoonlake. Prachtige tempel met mooi uitzicht op het meer. Het is een hele grote tempel met winkeltjes en vriendelijke mensen die er werken. Zeker de moeite van een bezoek waard.
Vaste complexe, monumental
Dédié principalement à Confucius, ce complexe accueille aussi d'autres cultes, notamment celui de Guan-di, le saint guerrier, sorte de dieu taoiste de la guerre. Depuis les terrasses du temple, on dispose d'une vue exceptionnelle sur le lac. Une sorte de portique géant, assez récent, couronne l'ensemble et donne sur un espace aménagé en jardin.

這是我跟先生第二次踏上這個地方, 它依然是那麼的壯闊與明媚！ 那一大片的潭水；對映著蔚藍的天空與高掛的艷陽, 潭水一週的樹木花草⋯⋯ 此情此景是無法用言語所形容的, 應該讓自己親身現場去體會它的美、它的壯闊～ 話說回來文武廟裡面所祀奉的神明其一文神是「岳武穆王」、其二武神是「關聖帝君」 原本以為他所祀奉的文神、武神皆是『關聖帝君』, 此話該如何說呢? ！ 因為文神的帝君是拿著一本「春秋書籍」、武神則是提著一把「青龍偃月刀」～ 結果是看文武廟的導覽解說, 方之文神是「岳武穆王」😄😄😄 所以呢? ！這告訴我們, 每參觀一個風景名勝地區一定要參考人家的導覽解說！ 才能了解風景名勝地區的由來～ 文武廟不僅僅只是祀奉岳武穆王、關聖帝君, 它還有祀奉了其他神明⋯⋯ 等著各位朋友們ㄧㄧ的細細品嚐～

A temple you cannot miss while visiting Sun Moon Lake. Very impressive with 4 levels each one contains many beautiful carving telling the story and military prowess of Wenwu. From the top level you can admire beautiful views of the Sun Moon Lake afar.

Lovely temple
Especially nice when viewed against the lake and also lit up at night. Some nice intricate carvings and designs. The colours are lively.
Attractive temple.... marred by tourist behaviour
This is an attractive temple with some really attractive and intricate designs. The colours are splendid and the temples themselves are interesting. Particularly the top one with Confucius. The backdrop of the lake also helps it's attractiveness to visitors. But here in lies the problem. On arrival there was a group of seven repeatedly doing star jumps for photographs, there was a group of 6 or 7 noisy youngsters, and across the road microphones singing creating noise pollution with some loud and noisy and unnecessary singing. I'm an Atheist, but at least I can respect the culture and religion of these sites and behave properly. Do not come to these sites unless you can behave with respect and dignity.

Huge green stone wall & great Sun Moon Lake view
The pavillion is beautiful and the scenic view in front of the temple is great. I like the green stone wall at the back of the temple so much.
Beautiful Temple with Great Views
Absolutely beautiful temple overlooking Sun Moon Lake. It's incredible ornate, and gorgeous and you can spend an hour or two just walking the grounds. Some great vistas for pictures as well. Definitely worth a look.

觀景台的部分, 風景很棒, IG景點, 很容易錯過, 這間廟很多華人 (台灣、新加坡、香港…) 所捐贈, 其中還蠻多在柱子上寫著待捐贈, 蠻奇特的景像。
One of the most amazing temples complexes in Taiwan -- and with incredible lake views!
I spent way more time here at the Wenwu Temple complex than I intended because there is so much to see and experience here as you work your way up the hill from one temple to the next. And the views from the roof at the top down to the lake are off-the charts amazing!
Prächtiger Tempel mit toller Aussicht!
Wir waren im Rahmen einer Rundreise hier und waren von dieser, 1938 errichteten, sehr gepflegten Anlage begeistert! Er huldigt einem Kriegsgott und Konfuzius zugleich. Eine fantastische Aussicht erhält man von hier oben ebenfalls. Im Januar waren kaum Touristen wie wir hier!
Astonishing Sensory Overload That Wows, and Just Keeps Wowing!!
Rather than coming via the boat, our private driver / guide drove us to Wen Wu, which is located high on a promontory overlooking Sun Moon Lake. We began our explorations of the temple at the top (I highly advise starting here since it is so much harder to climb all the steps if you arrive via water!). The Daoist shrines dedicated to Confucius and two great warrior deities, is built into the hillside in three ascending levels. The shrine to Confucius occupies the upper rear hall, with decorative motifs drawn from Chinese folklore. The temple's martial shrine sits slightly lower than the literary shrines. The temple complex is interesting for its complicated layout, with various pavilions and side halls connected by ornate passages and stairways. Decorated in red and gold, and featuring detailed reliefs in cement along with intricate paintings on ceilings and walls, this place is truly an astonishing sensory overload that wows, and just keeps wowing!!!
日月潭を眺めるキレイなお寺
ホテルから歩いて20分ほどの距離で、チェックイン後すぐ訪れました。新しく広いお寺で、色も鮮やかです。3歳の娘とけっこう階段を登りましたが、展望台で眺める日月潭の景色はキレイでした

Best temple around the Lake!!
We loved the multi-level aspect of this temple as it was added onto. The traditional wooden architecture with primary colors at the base building up to the grey-green stone reliefs on the upper level. Nice green area at the top. Tip: There are picnic areas to have a lunch; had I know I would have brought one to enjoy the expansive views of the lake in the shade. Very pretty
The Koi are beautiful
Spent time up behind Wen Wu temple checking out the Koi fish, such a beautiful sight the entire temple is.
Worth visiting
Some buildings are impressive, especially the inside roof structure. The sunset view from the main entrance towards the lake is nice. The view of Sun Moon Lake from the highest building is also good. After walking around I recommend to buy a cup of tea and relax in the resting area.
Spectacular
I thought that this huge and ornate temple was spectacular, with its carved stone and bright red and gold decoration. There are also good views down to the lake. It is built on a hillside so there are lots of steps.

I'm not a reference for temples, this one is in a very good shape, but I recommend the place because it's close to the lake with a fantastic view if the weather allows it.
A beautiful temple overlooking sun moon lake
This is a relatively new temple and is also known as the Literature Warrior Temple. It is well worth visiting while you are at Sun Moon Lake. We were there at sunset which was quite spectacular but also very peaceful. Take note of the intricate carving and painting on the traditional roof.

Beautiful spacious temple overlooking SunMoon Lake. Worth a stop for the view. It's sad though to see how they worship different man made gods for different things and really it's just man made.
Old small temple
This is an old temple and famous for Sun Moon Lake. Plenty of steps to climb. Views alright but I found the temple boring. Its small and similar to many I have seen before.
11月28日に行きました
某旅行会社のツアーで2日目に行きました。台湾旅行のパンフにはよく出てきますが台湾の中央にあり、台北からだと乗用車で3時間、電車では5本乗り継いで8時間かかりそうで、東京から猪苗代湖にローカル線で行くようなところだと思います。ガイドさんは日本の箱根のような位置づけだと言ってました。箱根でいう箱根神社、ここでは日月譚の文武廟になります。この建物は中国式のお寺で近年に建てられたようです。日月湖を眺められる高台にあり景色はいいです。夏は避暑地みたいだと聞きました。見学時間は予定35分でしたが足りませんでした。

Big and interesting temple, showing all elements of Chinese belief
This temple has multiple halls in vaarious stories and contains the elements of Buddism and Taoism. It is devoted to the god of literature. and to Guan Gong, the God of war. At the highest level you will find the honouring of Confusius, above the Lords of War. Many impressive statues and decorations. You need a guide to explain what everything is meaning.
日月潭湖の眺めは必見
日月潭湖に行けば必ず寄るのが文武廟ですが、1999年の大地震の後で台湾関係者の寄付により再建された廟は大変立派です。又、ここから眺める日月潭湖の眺めは最高です。

Große Anlage mit toller Aussicht
Klar, wer zum Sonne-Mond-See fährt, kommt um den Wen Wu Tempel nicht umher. Das liegt zum einen an seiner Lage, zum anderen aber auch am Tempel selbst. Malerisch auf einer Anhöhe mit schönem Ausblick über den See gelegen, ist es eine sehr vielfältige Tempelanlage. Wir waren skeptisch, da wir schon einige Tempel auf unseren Reisen gesehen haben. Dieser Tempel konnte uns dennoch sehr für sich einnehmen. Es gibt drei Ebenen, die alle eine andere Gesichte erzählen und die in ihrer Aneinanderreihung ein tolles Gesamtpaket abgeben. Etwas störend, sind die extra angelegten Besucherterassen auf den Dächern, die es nicht gebraucht hätte, da man vom oberen Abschnitt der Anlage bereits eine sehr gute (aber durch die Terasse verbaute) Aussicht hat. Zum Zeitpunkt unseres Besuches war sehr wenig los, dadurch standen genügend Parkplätze zur Verfügung und man konnte die Anlage in Ruhe auf sich wirken lassen. Alles in allem ein must-see am See

Kuil ini sangat indah sekali, penuh dengan ornamen dan berwarna cerah. Di depan kuil ini terdapat gapura yang besar dan keren. Di depan kuil ini kita bisa melihat Sun Moon Lake, pemandangan dari sini indah sekali.
Unique temple honoring Confucious and Guan Yu (Guan Yun-Chang)
Indeed, as our tour guide stated, rarely will we find a temple honoring both Confucious and Guan Yu in the same temple. Both are historical figures worthy of admiration and respects for all generations here and abroad. My heroes of all virtues!
Beautiful Temple
This Temple has impressive brightly painted buildings and a lovely view. We were there late afternoon. There was live music playing just across the street which I really enjoyed as well as a beautiful view at this point.
Wenwu temple
A place is worth to visit for prayer as well excursion. Temple has a tall building. You ride till top on the temple and hills. There is fish in the pond. You can feed to fish after purchasing food from the machine. There are 700 stares to reach lake.
Lots of stairs, beautiful architecture
When you arrive at this location it looks beautiful, but the size is bigger than it looks. I would not suggest this to anyone who has a problem with stairs as you will have many to take. As you go from level to level the architecture is fantastic, the colors are vibrant. Take your time as there is a lot to see. On the first level there are a couple of souvinere shops which has something for everyone. The higher you get the better the views get. No hurry here as there is lots to take in. Enjoy
One of the Most Beautiful Temples in the Area
This is a very beautiful temple that reflects the religious of the local inhabitants. There are three levels / tiers of the temple. Each tier has different gods / goddesses that some of them are famous legendary figures in the Chinese history, such as: Confucius. Absolutely enchanting and picturesque. There is no entrance fee here, don't miss it.
Busy and has a market
We walked to this temple from our hotel, Ambassador. It was about a 6-7 minute walk. The temple was extremely busy and crowded. There was a market going on the street in front of it. It was difficult to take pictures and to view. The market had some nice items.

半日遊的也很推薦
因為居住在雲嘉南地區, 其實到南投非常近, 文武廟我都下午到訪, 因為人群會比較少, 然後那裡的氣氛, 日月潭的景色ㄧ覽無遺... 美哉👍而且我很喜歡那裡的環境, 可以讓那步調緩慢, 整個放鬆, 一年都一定會特別去一趟❤

Maybe its not a holiday season, not much people around but sure it is amazing and huge. Also having a nice view of the Lake from the entrance of the temple.

文武廟有專屬的健行步道很適合攜家帶卷前往踏青, 交通上面也10分的方便喔而且還可以遠眺日月潭的湖面風光建議開車前往喔

文の神様である「孔子」と武の神様である「関羽」が祀ってある廟です。とても鮮やかな中国様式で、細かい彫刻も見事です。 高台にあるので、眼下に広がる湖の景色が美しいです。

2度目の参拝、混んでいました。
先回は、雨で転びそうになったり散々でしたが、今回は、天気も良くゆったりと参拝することができました。中国人客は、かなり減った感じですが、騒がしいです。門右側に、関羽雲長の石像(10尺・６ｍ)を建立する工事が行われており、関羽の石像がおいてあり、買って帰りたいと思いますが、売り物ではないですね。 次回機会があらば来てみたいです。
非常有台灣廟宇風情！
我們帶著韓國友人來訪, 她們都非常喜歡這個地方。文廟祀奉文昌君, 如果能順利擲出三個聖筊, 你可以將一支文昌毛筆免費帶回家(或是你可以捐獻一些香油錢)。武廟則是祀奉關公。
Huge & beautiful temple
This temple was located by the Sun Moon Lake.. it is magnificently built.. huge of artistic decoration and no doubt, it was heavily visited by all. There's a time which the earthquake did not collapse this temple which the huge earth crack just stopped a few meter from reaching the temple. That's a divine story there. Everything is huge and beatiful there.. very good for pics.
Úžasné místo
Chrám, i když není pradávný, stojí za prohlídku. Jako stavební dílo je dokonalý, pestrý a velmi působivý. Prohlídka může trvat i několik hodin a pohledy z chrámu na jezero jsou též úžasné. Žádný vstup se neplatí, kromě čínských turistů byl chrám poloprázdný.
狛犬大きい
ガイドブックで読んで、狛犬だけに期待を寄せていました。想像以上に狛犬が大きくて嬉しくなりました。一緒に写真に写ると大きさが実感できます。廟の方はあまり期待してなったのですが、細かい彫刻や色彩の綺麗さに見る価値は大きいです。特に天井を見て欲しいと思います。
Worth the visit!!
This was my last to-do at Sun Moon Lake and well worth the visit. This temple houses the gods of war and literature and Confucius. Well, not really gods or deities if you know a bit about chinese history. Guan Yu and Yue Fei existed in history and there are a lot of folklore written about them. Confucius as well of course, who has a great influence in Confucianism till today. Great and famous people in history so I was happy to pay my respects. Plus, the temple was beautiful!! You can get here by bus either by the one day pass at 80 NTD or 25 NTD each way.

素晴らしい廟建築です。 細かい壁や天井の細工を見て回るだけで、数時間は滞在できます。 高台に位置するため、廟の上から眺める日月潭の湖畔は最高に美しいです。

Diese Tempelanlage ist einfach nur beeindruckend. Hier stimmt einfach Alles! Die herrlichen Ausblicke auf den Sun Moon Lake und die Anlage an sich. Er befindet sich am Nordufer des Sun Moon Lake und wurde 1938 fertiggestellte. Wirklich überaus beeindruckend sind auch die vielen Decken mit ihren Ornamenten. Die ganze Anlage ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk und ich verpasst fast meinen Bus, vor lauter Staunen. Der Eintritt ist kostenlos ! Ein sog. " Must see "
台湾最大の「文武廟」です
水社の旅客センターから日月潭を周遊する「環湖バス」で最初に訪れました。 昌帝君、関聖帝君、岳武穆王が祀られています。 建物に施された細工、色彩、大きさ・・・、どれをとっても楽しませてくれました。 高台にあって、日月潭の景色も美しい。
Traditional Temple
文武朝 is just a traditional temple with 2 big lions in front of it. It is located in front of 日月潭, so have a beautiful view of the lake. Instead of using traditional stick to predict someone future, there is a machine for you, just put NT10, machine will come out a paper for you to predict your future, this is funny and very different with other temples.

台湾有数の観光名所である日月潭を眺めるのに、絶好のロケーションにある。台湾らしい建築様式・装飾・色づかい等は見る者の眼を奪います。ツアー参加の旅だったので、滞在時間が短かった事が残念でした。
Top tips for visiting Wen Wu Chao Temple
Tip 1: To get here, i am pretty sure you will need to have a car or a coach bus to drive you up here. I am not sure if there is a public bus stop here or not. Tip 2: This is a spot where most tourists dropyby and take photos of the lake. Tip 3: A lot of people wonder if you can climb up to the highest level of the temple and view the scenery, well the answer is no. Somehow the temple is built with a viewing platform but no stairways are built to go up to the viewing platform. Pretty strange aye? We can't figure out why they didnt build a stair to go up to the viewing platform. You can only go up about 3 / 4 to the top and thats it. Tip 4: While your here, you should have your toilet break. Tip 5: You will spend about an hour here taking lots of photos so charge up your camera. Tip 6: One very good thing about Sun Moon Lake is most of the attractions are free and you won't have to spend a lot touring around this town. Beautiful Temple with a marvelous view of the lake
I consider this as one of the beautiful temples i visited in Taiwan. I love the grand stairways and the marvelous view of the lake in front. Do not forget to include this to your visit in Nantou County.
Architektonisches und vielschichtiges Highlight
Der Tempel, der seit der Fertigstellung im Jahre 1938 die beiden Tempel der im See versunkenen Dörfer vereinigt, zählt sicherlich zu einem der architektonischen Highlights am Sun Moon Lake und eröffnet seine Gemeinisse in verschiedenen Ebenen wahrlich bis ganz zum Ende. Eigentlich besteht der Wen Wu Chao aus verschiedenen Tempeln, denn er weiht Konfuzius, Guan Gong und weitere Bodhisattvas, darunter auch viele kulturelle und kriegerische Gelehrte und Führer. Daher erhielt der Wen Wu Chan auch seinen Namen, der in etwa in " Kultur-und Martial-Tempel " übersetzt werden kann. Durch das große Tor am Eingang geht es die zahlreichen Treppen hinauf zum ersten Hauptgebäude und während bei vielen anderen Tempeln dann hier auch schon wieder Schluss ist, eröffnet der Wen Wu Chao hier nicht nur seine spirituelle und religiöse Tiefe, sondern auch die bauliche. Kaum hat man das erste Plateau erreicht und tritt in den Tempel ein, sieht man im Hintergrund über sich auch schon den nächsten Tempel mit weiteren Statuen. Viele goldene Bitt- und Gebetsschilder hängen von der Brüstung herab und wehen glänzend im Wind. Der weitere Aufstieg zur dritten Ebene und schweißtreibende Gang bis ganz nach hinten der Anlage lohnen sich auf jeden Fall, denn hier speit ein Drache von hoch oben aus einer mit unzählbar vielen Motiven verziehrten Steinmauer Wasser in einen Brunnen zu Füßen des Besuchers. Die Steinmauer lässt sich seitlich über weitere Stufen hinweg besteigen, so dass man am Ende hoch über der gesamten Tempelanlage steht und einen sehr schönen Blick auf den Brunnen, den Tempel und den See erhält.
Nice temple with good views of the lake
This was one of our visits when we visited Sun Moon Lake. It was one of our stop overs as we drove around the lake. The Temple is big and majestic as it overlooks the lake. The temple is built against the mountain slopes and hence there is quite a bit to climb and see. The wall carvings are beautiful and some of the statues are majestic. At the top of the temple, you can have a great view of sun moon lake and you can get some nice pictures taken up there. We spent a good 60mins over here. My smaller kids (3 - 6) liked climbing up the temples and looking at the dragon sculptures, my teenage kids were bored and just sat on a bench. But I loved it.
Worth a visit
Take photo at the famous sun moon lake stone outside the temple. Walk 5 mins down to peacock garden.
孔子と関羽、岳飛を祀る中国寺院
本数は少ないですが、水社の旅客センターから日月潭を周遊する「環湖バス」で訪れるのが便利です。片道32台湾ドルと格安で移動できます。(又、「環湖バス」の一日券は80台湾ドルです。遊覧船が300台湾ドルですから、かなりお得です。)孔子(学問の神)と関羽、岳飛(武道の神)を祀る中国寺院です。お寺では無く神社ですが、日本で例えるなら天満宮(菅原道真 / 学問の神様)と八幡宮(八幡神 / 武運の神)が一緒になった感じでしょうか。建物の細部の作り、壁画彫刻が見事でした。最上部まで行くと日月潭が一望出来ます。
Magnificent temple!
I must say this one of the most magnificent temples that I have ever been. The scale of the temple, intricacies of carvings and exquisiteness can match that of some oriental palaces that I have visited in other parts of Asia. Going into the temple to me is like admiring art works in an art gallery. The sculptures are awe inspiring and the carvings on walls screams intricacies. Each piece of carvings on wall tells a story. Loved the architecture of the temple. Layers upon layers with intricate designs and colors. We got there in the evening and found it to be very peaceful walking inside the temple. From the temple, you get a beautiful view of Sun Moon Lake. In the night, when the temple gets lighted up, it presents another beautiful view of the temple. Across the road from the temple on the left facing the Sun Moon Lake, you will see a flight of stairs, with 366 steps. On each step, it represents a day in the year. Name of famous individuals are carved on each step based on their birth dates. It is pretty fun to check out which infamous individuals share the same birth date as you. For those whose birthdays are in earlier part of the year, good luck, you have to climb further down. I attempted to complete the full flight of stairs and went right to the bottom and climbed back again. At the bottom, you see another view of Sun Moon Lake. In the Sun Moon Lake vicinity that I had visited, had found this temple to be particularly interesting for me.
Nice big temple
Nice big traditional Buddhist temple. The one thing that make this temple special to tourists are the wind chimes souvenirs sold inside the tempe for 350 nt dollars. One could write your wishes on it, pass it over the incense to carry your wishes up to the heavens, then cross over the road to the " Year of Steps ", search for the step with your birtth date labled on, it then hang it there. Let the windchime carry your wishes across every time winds blows through it. Hmmmm, very whimsical, agree ?
Impressive architecture and interior
The architecture and interior of this temple is very impressive. I highly recommend visiting this temple. It also offers a nice view of Sun Moon Lake, although the nicest view is from the Xuan Zhuang temple.
Best Temple in Taiwan
Visited here through Hong Thai Tour Agency (Spore) & this is a really nice Confucius Temple, no regrets but a wow experience. What I like most are the Qing Dynasty palace style architecture, engravings on the walls & slopes, the many deity idols eg Kuan Kong (god of war) & legendary Yue Fei, statues of Confucius, Mencius & Zihsih, the 2 humongous size vermillion stone lions on the front plaza, the worship practice by devotees, the 366 steep steps called 'Stairway to Heaven', the tranquil & beautiful ambience overlooking the Sun Moon Lake on a high level. The engraving replicas which depict folklore stories reminds me of those i saw in Italy, in duomo (cathedrals), basilica & baptistery. It's good to hear the miraculous true story of how this temple partially escaped the wrath of one huge earthquake, that's why replicas had to replaced those broken originals from China. And also it was here that i got learn on the zodiac creature which has no anus but secreted fragrance from its skins. This temple gave me lessons of history, beauty, culture, tradition & legends. Would i recommend, it's a big YES bcos it offers both recreational & educational values. Just across the road, directly opposite to the entrance of this temple is a restaurant which miraculously escaped unscathed from that same earthquake. Food served was just so-so, nothing to shout about.
日月譚と文武廟
ツアーで訪れました。道路をはさんで日月譚があり、180度湖の眺めを楽しめ、振り返ると文武廟があります。文武廟の本殿は高台にあるので、上へ上へと上っていくとそこからもとても綺麗な景色が眺められます。たくさんの精細な彫刻があり、ぜひ、訪れて欲しい場所です。
Great view of the Sun Moon Lake and a majestic temple
From there, u can have a great view of the lake. The temple has a tinge of modernism where there is a machine which can explain the divination lot for you at 80NT D. Go to admire the temple structure and view of the lake. Accessible by public bus, 80NTD for one day pass.
越來越現代化的文武廟
距上一次去文武廟應該超過五年了, 這次再造訪, 除了宏偉之外, 還有許多令人驚艷的地方, 像月下老人整個變Q版, 還可電子抽籤詩, 跟傳統宮廟比起來多了點新意, 後方新建好的區域也很壯觀漂亮, 環境也很乾淨整齊, 有外國友人來訪時, 這地方真的很推薦帶去參觀介紹台灣的宮廟文化
Must see
I saw many temples and pagodas for the last 10 days in Taiwan but this is the best. There are so many stone carvings that is difficult to comprehend.
Worth to be visit
If u come to sun moon lake. But u didn't visit the wen wu Chao. Then u missed out one of the most popular place. May be u don't like temple. Take it easy by viewing their building the decoration and their culture. 真的很壮观。值得一游。另外为马来西亚朋友感到骄傲, 听打理庙的大叔说。这间庙有70% 的捐款刻名来自马来西亚。接下来就是新加坡。有人说很灵。但是我们住太远了。抱着观光的心态就好了。

聽很多人說來這裡求的籤很靈, 因為我從來沒求過, 所以不知道. 孩子喜歡關公與岳飛, 所以來朝聖一下!
Don't miss this if you are in the area
Literally translated, Wen means Literature and Vu means War / Martial Arts. The temple certainly deserves a visit. It has great architecture, large areas of delicate carving with splendid vantage point overlooking Sun Moon lake at the top. The central hall is devoted to Guan Gong, the God of War - Vu. The rear hall is dedicated to Confucius - Wen. Compared to the Holy Monk Temple near by, Wen Wu is much easier to access. It also provides better view and architecture.
Include as part of your Sunmoon lake visit
Make the effort to walk up (quite a long way up) to the top, to fully admire the architecture of the temple and the wonderful view over the lake. Admire many of the carvings as you go up. This is a temple in which to check out your future. Ask your guide to help you understand how to pull the sticks, throw the wooden blocks and understand your fortune via a NT$10 machine which issues your future on slivers of paper. In front of the temple we were entertained by some excellent buskers who kindly invited us into a karaoke singsong. Wonderful moment as the sun went down
Steps!
This is a holy shrine to be treated with respect - no shouting, no American chewing gum. Find your way up by the increasingly narrow staircases to gain a great view of the Sun Moon lake from the temple roof.
Gorgeous temple by Sun Moon lake
A very beautiful temple with exquisite architecture and decorations. The altars are gorgeously crafted, including the ceilings, walls, post and the traditional roofs. A place worthy of respect for worshipers' honor they give to their gods. A worthy visit for any tourist.
Short visit but worth it
Probably the most worth visiting place in SML. Well maintained, wished I had more time here but as I need to catch the last bus, I only spent 1 hour exploring and watching sunset. next time I would try the 366 steps.

If you want to see a large temple with great lake views, this is the place to go. It's a short visit (under an hour).
石段は疲れた
文武廟と道路を挟んだ所に365段の石段が湖まで下っています。道路は12月31日なので、気軽な気持ちで1月1日まで下りていきましたが、失敗しました。戻りが昇りなのですが、ヘトヘトになりました。回り道もないし、エレベータも無いので必死で戻りました。 覚悟して湖まで下りましょう。 湖の眺めは良かったですよ。
Muss see Temple
A must see temple around Sun Moon Lake. Beautiful giant red lions on each side of the stairs leading to the temple. Great picture opportunity. At night its also well lit.
Large temple
A Chinese temple. Very well renovated after the earthquake. Nice architecture and decorations. There is garden on top and behind of the temple.

Its very grand from the inside. Nice walk around of the Temple. Made a wish at the wishing well. Try to walk to the top and marvel the view of the lake from above.

A Decorative and Elegant Temple
This is an elegant Chinese temple. All the walls and pillars are neatly carved in details to tell stories of Chinese historical sages. Half an hour is minimum.

If u are in Sun Moon lake, this Tempe is a must see. For Chinese, the devoted God is for Education, so many students facing exams visit this temple for prayers and wishes, A good 30 hour to 45 munites would cover the temple, if tired ice cream, or coffee is available at the temple. The famous Sun Moon lake stone is just in front of this Temple.

ここから見る日月譚の眺めは最高です
お寺の建物自体も美しいので鑑賞しつつ奥に進むと、上の階へ上がる細い階段がある建物がありました。その階段を上った屋上のようなスペースからは、文武廟のオレンジの屋根越しに日月譚を眺めることができ、最高でした。 また、廟を入ってすぐ横の大きな狛犬も、見ごたえがあります。
Just ok
Erm, another temple in the sun moon lake area. The place is ok and clean, can drop by visit if you take the speed boat lake cruise tour.
Big temple with excellent details
Beautiful big temple with excellent detailing. Check out the story on how the earth opening up stopped just outside the inner hall during the major 921 earthquake in 1999.
Nice view up there
If you are taking a bus on your way back to the tourist centre, no harm hopping off and visit this temple. Quite and relaxing place.
Interesting temple
3 temples in one.. May want to spend an hour here praying and take photo from the east side Sun Moon Lake (SML). If you believe in praying for fortune, doing well in studies and smooth love path. Here is a good place to do so. You could donate / do contributions in exchange 'good fortune notes' or wind chimes with your name to hang (signify good health). Try the walking up the stairs to heaven leading from SML up to Wen Wu Chao!!
