The best sheets!
We loved this inn. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful with advice about Newfoundland. We were leaving early in the morning, and they made a breakfast basket up for us. The room was very nice. Best of all, the sheets were amazingly soft!
Never again
Well where do I start. First, the water is brown and undrinkable, the two bed room we booked, that was confirmed in a call when we booked, became a one bed room. An upgrade was what she said when she knew we wanted two beds. The room had no fridge to keep drinking water cold. It also faced the exhaust fan from the kitchen so that was a lovely smell. The wifi was poor as well as the cable channels. Tried to take a shower and the water was luke warm at best. The final thing was the bathroom door. It was a sliding door that was angled wrong and slid open when you closed it. Instead of fixing it, they put a hook and eye on it. But they put the hook near the edge of the door so it still slid open the length of the hook. We did not stay our two nights as booked and when I let the owner know the review would not be great, she said " why what is wrong? " Unbelievable.
Excellent place to stay and eat
This Inn was such a perfect place to rest and eat prior to going to Mistaken Point. The room were super clean and the beds very comfortable. I became ill on the trip and the staff kindly let me stay an extra few hours past check out while my husband hiked Mistaken Point. Their kindness in this situation made a bad situation tolerable. Amazing people. Thank you Avalon Inn!
Enjoyed our stay
We stayed at this hotel for a few nights as we visited Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve for the fossil hike and St Vincent's beach to see whales lunge feeding. Nice, quaint hotel. Clean rooms. Very friendly staff. My husband said the fish and chips at their restaurant was delicious. We'd stay there again if we're ever back in the area. Kristine and Dennis from Ottawa
Amazing place to stay and eat!
This is such a cute place, the food, service and people are so friendly and accommodating. The grounds and rooms are very nice, we were presently surprised. The staff is over accommodating, you can't drink the water but they have plenty of bottled water and you can shower and bath just minerals in the water. The restaurant has a beatific view. Almost forgot the food portions are huge couldn't finish my meal so delicious. Thank you for the relaxing stay.
Great restaurant on site
This is where we ate lunch on our drive around the Irish Loop. The food was excellent and it is the only restaurant in the area. The motel also looked very clean and modern however we didn't stay there. These is no listing for the restaurant on trip advisor so I decided to review it here. Definitely would recommend this place both Inn and Restaurant.
Strange Experience
The food was ok. My burger was actually black at least on one side. My wife's club or whatever was ok. My daughter said the fish was good. What was bizarre is that they tried to get us for a tip when we bought decorations; we paid for our meal and then bought some crafts after. I wasn't even prompted for how much I wanted to tip, which would have been zero, but I noticed because it gave me a chance to decline. That takes real nerve to ask for a tip on a retail purchase!
Ups and Downs
I stayed at this place for the weekend starting October 6th. This Inn has some things going for it. A large, paved parking lot. Attractive exterior. Beautiful garden in the back. Free WIFI. A tastefully decorated hallway. Even though the restaurant was not opened for the off-season, breakfast supplies were made available in the restaurant area. It was also left open after hours, as a sort of lounging area. But all was not rosy. The lounging area seemed to be a sort of apology for the small hotel room. There were four of us. We could not avoid being in each other's personal space. The beds were small and uncomfortable. The TV reception was below par. And then there was the water.... Did I mention the water? I've been in places where the water was discolored, but drinkable. Given that, and the fact that there was nary a boiling order sign, I made the mistake of gulping down some of the water, and using it for brushing my teeth. BTW, there was free bottled water in the room. But that's not a strong enough indicator of the cost of missing the hint. How can I relate the results, without offering insult? I was as a donkey auctioneer. I had to show my ass at a lot of places to close the deal. During peak season, with long days, warm, sunny weather, and the restaurant open, The Edge of Avalon might be a reasonable pick. Not so on October 6th. The locals told us of a legendary " restaurant a half hour up the road. " But, any time after eight - You might as well be searching for the Edmund Fitzgerald. I guarantee you, you will get that sinking feeling. I'll sum it up. Peak season, give it a go. After September, it's best advertised as a place offering basic accommodations, and that's it. The fact that the restaurant is no longer full service in post season, the fact that the small rooms become a bigger disadvantage during inclement weather, the fact that the garden is not as much of an asset when it's cold outside..... I think that the price should better reflect these disadvantages. Did I mention the water? Listen to Sammy Kershaw, he said it a couple of decades back : DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER!!!!
Nice stay in Trepasse dispite the weather
One night stay on our way through the Irish loop unable to see anything as the fog rolled in that day. Excellent reception with wonderful people and helpful waitress giving us warm Newphie hospitality. Food was awesome as well. Appreciated the continental breakfast.
Great cafe with nice views
Stopped in for lunch and we were very impressed. It's everything you expect a small Newfoundland cafe to be. Comfortable with friendly staff, a good menu, not too large but enough choices, affordable, nice view of the harbour and excellent food. Hubby had the fish cakes and seafood chowder. You get two nice sized fish cakes with a nice zesty dipping sauce, not too fishy, perfectly balanced with potatoes and spices and nicely breaded. The chowder was the best he's ever had and he's tried a lot of them. Nice creamy broth but not pasty thick, lots of big chunks of seafood and veggies. I had the chicken on a bun with the house salad. Both were excellent, the chicken sandwich was a large chicken breast in a little and crispy batter, inside the chicken was moist and tender, served with mayo and lettuce, it was perfect. The salad was a nice surprise, mixed greens, cranberries, veggies and a good balsamic dressing, really very nice salad. Everything was very good, came quickly and was affordable, the staff were friendly and attentive.
Restaurant Review
The food was wonderful and served piping hot. The fish chowder was full of big chunks of seafood, highly recommend. Service was friendly and fast. The French fries are delicious. Try the Iceberg beer, we enjoyed it. Great stop for lunch on the Irish Loop.
Good restaurant
So if I could rate the restaurant it would be 5. The food was great as was the very pleasant staff. Great place to stop half way through the Irish Loop. The hotel part however has issues. Maybe it was just our room but it had a very unpleasant musty smell. I wanted to see if they had another room but we simply tried to sleep with the window somewhat open. The room was spacy. Found an ant in the bathroom. The water is yellowish and we were warned not to drink it. At least they provided free water bottles. The wifi was horrible. Maybe it was our location. In summary, eat here but maybe not sleep here.
Living on the Edge (of the Avalon)
This Inn is very centrally located on the Irish Loop, close to Mistaken Point, Cape Race, St. Vincent's, etc. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and quiet, and some (including ours) had a nice view of the water. The hosts are friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant on site with a good range of options. No complaints from us!
Nice place to stay midway on the Irish Loop trail
Well positioned as a midway stop on the Irish Loop trail. The Inn has a restaurant and friendly staff. It's comfortable and right on the main highway, central to everything in Trepassey. The rooms are cozy.
Good stop to dinner
Arrêt pour diner, tous les plats étaient bons, tacos au poisson, crab cake, oinion ring, fish and chip 3 morceaux avec frites. Bon service, belle ambiance, bien situé près de l'eau. Un belle pour prendre un repas.
Great spot!
Our hosts were very welcoming. The food in the restaurant was lovely. The view was spectacular. The arranged night tour with Tony was very informative and entertaining. The room was clean and quiet. Thanks so much for the lovely stay!
Good stay
Small comfortable hotel in good location if in area. Staff friendly, rooms comfortable but small. Rooms clean, I suspect satellite wifi and tv so in a severe storm can be slow or interrupted, Parking easy and easy to find. Restaurant attached good, I would stay again if in area.
Charming
This was a convenient place for us to stop for the night as we traveled through the area. But it was so comfortable and had so much charm with local art on display, we would plan to stay here again. The room was spotless and had a fabulous charging hub for all our tech needs. For dinner I had delicious cod cakes and a fresh and generously portioned small salad. Breakfast was continental and included a good variety of muffins, fruit, etc. to choose from. With a friendly welcome and warm service, I would recommend a stay here.
Customer service excellent
Had to work late and was stuck on the Irish loop without a room booked anywhere. Called John Devereaux (owner of Edge Of The Avalon Inn) Even though the Inn was booked up and kitchen was closed, he went out of his way to get us a room at The Annex location 5 minutes away and made sure his staff put together some sandwiches for us. He went way above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. He owns the annex as well. Had darts and a pool table in the basement rec room as well as a Bluetooth karaoke speaker. Beds were comfortable. Big thanks to a family operation that is looking to give excellent service to its customers.
Amazing lunch and terrific views
Arrived for a late lunch and quickly accommodated by friendly staff and when the food arrived - hot and fresh - well !!! Huge portions of perfectly cooked cod.. the 2 tacos and crisp fries on each plate could have served for two persons! Will stop here again!
Expensive, Noisy, Died of Thirst
The walls and doors are PAPER THIN. Every time someone opened a door we woke up, if someone was talking in the hallway, we woke up. Lucky for us there were some very rowdy grown men being loud and partying there and nothing was done about that all night. The restaurant wasn't open but the housekeeper made up food anyways, it was tasty but when we were given the bill it was $25 a plate for half a chicken breast each potato's and carrots, not made by a chef. The tap water is not drinkable, we were given two bottles of water in our rooms for the whole night. When we went to go find more there was no water in the fountain, no ice machine, and no staff. We died of thirst, literally started boiling tap water in the coffee pot and putting it in the fridge.
Friendly, clean and comfortable
The rooms are modern and clean. The Powles Head Suite had a very comfortable bed, view of the ocean, excellent fridge with a separate freezer and a great walk in shower. The staff are very friendly. There is a bright, spacious licensed dining room for supper which important since it is long drive to other eating establishments.. at least in May during COVID. They provide a continental breakfast with your accommodations. There is a grocery store two doors down with a Liquor Express for your other supplies. The interpretive centres at Cape Race and MistakenPoint are close by. We also drove to Powles Head and Cape Pine to visit those lighthouses. If you don't mind driving gravel road, you will find good hiking at Cape Pine.
It was good
I stayed here for a work trip, we were informed beforehand that the restaurant would be closed but that there would be someone around to make food for us if we wanted something. It was kind of awkward when we arrived, the check in wasn't obvious, didn't seem like much staff were on which I'm sure is covid19 related. Either way our room was cute, the beds were super comfy, it seemed very clean. Our complimentary breakfast was brought to us that evening which was nice as we were leaving early the next day. Upon check out in the morning, again no one was around and I was not informed of where to leave the room key. I literally left it on a shelf and left because we had to go to work. I realize it's off season and low staff is understandable. Overall, it was a good stay. Trepassy is beautiful.
Great rooms and friendly staff
Clean and comfortable room with handy mini fridge. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking at the side of the building was convenient and made it easy to access my room. I was on a birdwatching visit to the area so the location was ideal. Recommended!
August 2020 review
Stayed for one overnight in August. Room was clean and adequate. Staff were very friendly and helpful. No restaurant service which was disappointing but take out food, availabe on premises, was adequate. Located close to Mistaken Point which was why we chose to stay there.
Quick Staycation
My wife and I stayed at the Edge. The rooms was pleasant and quiet. The bed was comfortable. We ate at the in house take out and enjoyed the food very much. We brought our own drinks to the deck and enjoyed the view and fresh air. Trepassey is conveniently located half way through the Irish Loop.
Above and beyond
Restaurant was closed but they found us some food. Fish and chips was delicious John, thanks. Maybe could have let us know that staff was low and we could have made other arrangements. But all in all a good experience.
Over priced for the quality and condition of the room
Although the room was clean and comfortable enough much of the furniture and fixtures were old and well worn. Room security (lock) was very week. The door had only a standard older household indoor latch with a defective striker plate which did not retain the latch. Staff had to be called to correct the problem because the catch would not hold the door closed. Also there was no deadbolt or security chain. Also the bedside lamps were unplugged behind the bed and staff had to be called to plug them in. Obviously there are no routine inspections being done to ensure everything is in order for guests. The fee of $140.00 + tax for a basic hotel room is extremely high given the lack of amenities and the property itself. This is a very old inn with a few upgrades. We stayed in an inn a few hours drive further west on the south coast the night before where we had a full suite with a bedroom, setting, dining and kitchen suite. This property was fully upgraded and the fee was only $119.00+tax. We were disappointed with the Edge of Avalon Inn.
Our Stay at the Guess House Edge of the Avalon Inn
I cannot say enough about this place, it was absolutely beautiful everything that you would need is provided. Just bring your own groceries and beverages and its home away from home only better, So peaceful, relaxing and quiet. The owner checked in on us to make sure everything was ok and it certainly was. I would recommend this place to anyone.. We plan on returning again.
Newfoundland hospitality
We stayed in the comfortable cottage - 4 adults and 2 children. Plenty of space, huge bathrooms, lovely family dining room overlooking the ocean. Hosts were friendly and solicitous, and anxious that all our needs were met. Well-equipped and well-maintained.
Heaven with an ocean view!
We had a fantastic time staying at the house. It fit two families comfortably. The place provided everything you need and more. Can't recommend it enough! Lots of places to explore nearby, lots of fishing, beaches and sites to see.
Definite Staycation NL
The accommodations were great. The staff were very friendly & helpful. Would definitely stay there again & have been recommending others to stay there. Great location if visiting Mistaken Point, Cape Race, Ferryland.
Vriendeljke locatie
Wonderful Stay on Irish Loop
Well-maintained, beautiful inn! Friendly welcome and great food. We loved our time here! It is a great day-drive to come south from St. John's down the coast. Stop in all of the villages and soak up the picturesque surroundings. All of the coves offer a unique view of the ocean. Large fishing vessels and friendly fishermen abound on the docks! Our dinner at the Edge of the Avalon Inn was delicious. The Inn was quiet, and we enjoyed reading our books in the late afternoon in the cozy dining room. Our room was lovely, great bed and bedding, and the continental breakfast was scrumptious and filling.
Pleasantly surprised
Trepassey is a small town, so we were happy to find that the inn had a nice dining room and bar. The view from the dining room is terrific, with a balcony for good weather. The room was clean and a generous size. It is a scenic drive to the lighthouse and not far to the Mistaken Point fossil display (but book ahead if you want to actually go for a walk to the fossil beds).
Most delicious dinner in our whole trip!
My husband and I stayed here when we toured around the east coast of Newfoundland this summer. We arrived just the night before the start of their " Labour Day Fest " music festival and sure wished that we'd thought ahead to plan to be there for it. Next time! The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable with a recently updated ensuite bathroom. The breakfast is not included but available in the attached restaurant with lots of choices on the menu. We had dinner in the restaurant the evening that we arrived and must say that it was probably the most delicious meal that we had on our whole month long holiday! The drive around the peninsula is beautiful and very different from the rest of the province. It's well worth a visit to this friendly community!
Lunch at the Avalon Inn
It was the end of the season and after a wedding their stocks were low and the menu was short. 3 things were offered and we choose the fish and chips and the turkey club sandwich. The fish was well cooked but the chips were end of the season; that is a bit oily for the lack of a better word. My wife's sandwich was very good. Service was friendly and very welcoming. We really appreciated that they were still open for basically the season was over. Great art on the walls and the weather did not really cooperate for the sea view.
Great spot
A great place to stop and give yourself plenty of time for seeing all the sights on the Irish Loop. The food was very good, rooms were nice and clean and everyone was very friendly. Breakfast was continental which was fine for me but those with big appetites might want to make other plans.
Welcoming Inn
Welcoming reception in a lovely town. Good kitchen for dinner and breakfast, although not inexpensive, though certainly not too dear. Good travel advice provided too, ensuring we saw the area without jeopardizing the car on some of the less well travelled roads!
Recommended
We had a wonderful stay here in September 2018. An excellent dinner in the restaurant, treated to fine views of the sunset. Service was attentive and friendly, and the food was well prepared and delicious. We then retired to our clean, comfortable and well-appointed room. Tastefully decorated too. Breakfast in the restaurant did not disappoint. We left well rested, well fed and sorry that we didn't have time for another night's stay.
Great gem 9n the Irish Loop
We stumbled upon the Inn by accident t as we did the Irish loop and had lunch there. What a gorgeous little restaurant. We wish we had time to stay at the inn but we hadn't planned to stay the night in that area and were pushing through. Carol Anne was a wonderful host and we stayed back chatting with her for quite a while after we finished our meal. They have live music on certain nights and I am sure that is a treat! I'd highly recommend stopping in to see them there. Try the chowder it was to die for!
Good stay and very good restaurant
Stayed 2 nights. The employees of the Inn and Restaurant are absolutely the BEST. So friendly and accommodating. Not too many places to stay in Trepassy so this will be your best choice. The rooms are a bit dull (painted the latest fashionable grey) which is not too cheerful on a foggy, rainy day, but you are there mostly to sleep and eat, so that's really a very small criticism. Overall, accommodations meet our needs and we really liked the on-site restaurant.
Great stay in Trepassey
Our group of seven birders / nature enthusiasts spent two days and nights on the southern Avalon and used the Edge of the Avalon Inn as a base. This was my seventh stay here. They have put a lot of effort into redesigning and updating rooms and the changes are great. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. Dining room setting food and service were all excellent. I would strongly recommend using this as a stop on a trip around the Irish Loop.
Quaint and welcoming
While my sleep was constantly interrupted by dog barking in room across the hall and people actually yelling at one another in the hall, it was to no fault of the inn's…. unless they say no barking dogs allowed. The inn itself was delightful. My room was clean, the staff super friendly, and the room was reasonably priced.
Clean modern dining room with a pretty view
Stopped in for a bite to eat on our trip around the Irish Loop. The owner came by the table to greet us before our meal came. Service was great, meal was great (recommend the french fries), and appreciated having wifi available. We had a lovely view of the turquoise coloured water around the shore.
Lovely, as always!
I've stayed here multiple times over the past few years - usually with clients while on nature tours. The location is great; the rooms are always clean, quiet &comfortable; the staff are friendly and helpful; and the food is always excellent!
A Wonderful and Beautiful Escape
Such a great time this past May 2-4 at the Inn. We made the trip to Trepassey from St. John's with an extra special package, my Grandfather's " Scottie ". His handmade bamboo rod from the '50's, made in Scotland but residing thereafter in Kenya and Wales. He would be tickled pink and proud as hell if he knew that it was now being used across the pond in Canada by his great-grandson. He'd be gobsmacked if he knew that Linda had taken the time to cook them for my son in the Inn's kitchen, perfectly done with some scrunchions and a hint of seasoning - certainly an unforgettable experience for him! The hiking and scenery were breathtaking, everyone was so very friendly, and the food and drink were bar none! No one wanted to make the trek home. The staff as a whole bent over backwards for us to make sure we had a great time, and we are ever-appreciative. With so many things to do in the surrounding area, it was a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of weekly life. Thanks so much to Linda, Norm, Judy, John and Carol Ann - we'll be back!
Good place on the Avalon pensinsula
We stayed here for only one night. The staff was very friendly and let us travellers do our laundry, which was very nice. The room was okay, nothing special. There were two beds, a bit small for us, but we slept well. We had dinner in the Inn, which was okay. We preferred their breakfast over dinner. I had lovely pancakes with red berries (instead of the standard blueberries) and they were delicious
Great hospitality for end of season travellers
We appreciated that the owner accommodated us, even though the main part of the business was closed. We were offered a room with kitchen facilities. The bed was comfortable, and the views were beautiful. Thank you!
Beautiful place
It not much to look at from the outside but the inn is very comfortable and beautifully decorated. Extremely clean with great staff. You should for sure give it a try. We would definitely stay here again if we were down in Trepassy Newfoundland
Funky, fun and views
The main place to stay in Trepassey, effort has been made to make this place standout. The decor is modern, with for sale art work down the corridors, comfortable rooms with no chintz in sight. The staff are great and very helpful. On the downside, they have put in wooden flooring which is the loudest and creakiest I have ever come across. Even if you manage not to hear people in the room next door you will certainly not sleep through anyone with you getting up in the middle of the night. Also, while the staff are great they are also jolly noisy from a chat and laughter point of view. Therefore avoid rooms close to the kitchen / restaurant if you are early to bed or late to rise. No issues for me with the restaurant food which was good.
Everything overcooked
We stopped here before heading on to St. Vincent's as we were told this was the only place to eat along this stretch of the Avalon Peninsula. We were not impressed with the food. The fish and chips and the hamburger were all overcooked and because it took so long to get them in the first place we did not want to wait for anything else. We must have come at a bad time because others seemed to think the food was good. Because of that I would give this restaurant another try.
Inn and Restaurant
Very convenient if going to see the nearby fossils or Cape Race. Loved the fish tacos - not spicy (good for me) and so flavourful. Everyone enjoyed their meals and we have now voted their french fries as the best on our two week trip in Newfoundland. Friendly service. Two couples got screeched in while we were there - quite the event! Very responsive to email questions. Room was modern and clean. Left window open for a breeze. We city folk appreciated the Milky Way and stars - a pro of being in a small town.
Some great views from the dining area
We did a long day trip around the Irish Loop that starts or ends in St. John's. We stopped at this Inn for lunch. The staff were very kind, professional and lunch was very nice. The dining area allowed lots of elbow room and you could look out at the water as you relaxed.
Their hospitality will keep you coming back
We stopped here a year ago for lunch and I liked the place so much I booked a 3 night stay this year. Friendly staff really want you to enjoy yourself at the Southern tip of the Avalon peninsula: there's 500 million year old fossils, history that includes pirates and faeries, there's nesting puffins, shearwaters, and many other birds, whales, caribou, and great hikes. The place feels pretty new; guests are pleasant, noise was never a problem, and the meals served in the restaurant are terrific (but it takes a loooong time for the meal to come once you order it.)
Jederzeit wieder
Herzlicher Empfang trotz viel Betrieb. Kostenloses Upgrade.
Great Find in Remote Area
The Edge of Avalon Inn in Trepassey Nfld, is at the southern edge of the Avalon Peninsula. The Inn has been recently beautifully redecorated with lots of local artwork adorning the walls. The food was exceptional and a reasonable price. Two of the more adventurous of our party had some mechanical problems in a remote area and did not arrive until 9pm. The manager, Carol Ann, and her staff stayed on site until they arrived and chef Andrew, restarted the kitchen to feed them. I would highly recommend anyone touring the Avalon Peninsula stop here, if not for the night, at least for a wonderful meal. We were treated like family.
What a Great surprise
Too bad this place doesn't come up under restaurants. This has to rank among the best meal we had in our 10 days drive through Nlfd. Rates for the hotel are reasonable as well. The meal was FANTASTIC! Had the seafood chowder - chunks of fresh shrimp, scallops, clam... Omg good. The Seafood Linguine (" Screetch and Cream " was a huge portion of the best scallops and shrimp I've had (almost ever, and I know my seafood). The fresh salmon dinner was exactly that, fresh. Had it blackened with the house salad. Portion was fair (just enough to fill a 200lb. Man - with the app mentioned above). Everything was perfectly cooked. Chef came out three times to chat, and the waitress (s) were friendly and knowledgable. How nice. We would love to come back.
This is why people love Newfies
We live in St. John's and decided to take an aimless trip around the Irish Loop on a long weekend. We figured we would stay wherever we landed for an evening or just go all the way around and be home for the night. Either way, we were just exploring the island a little. We pulled into the Motel around 5:30 to find a Fish and Chips supper happening with live music (it was Good Friday). Supper was fantastic! We asked the waitress - Judy - if we could have a room. She wasn't sure because it was actually closed for the off-season and they were in the middle of extensive renovations. She said she'd talk with the owner. A little bit later John (the owner) came to our table to say hi. He said we could stay upstairs in an area not currently being renovated if we were ok with that. Granted, the upstairs was a bit dated - but who cares! They are actively renovating and by the looks of it in the spring the place will be really nice!.. aaaand they weren't even open and let us stay! So that evening the music continued and some locals came by for a few drinks. I should mention this is the only bar in the area that I'm aware of - so it seems to be THE local gathering spot. Everyone was super friendly and the evening passed by quickly in a flurry of drinks and conversation. We found out that the next evening they had a band called the Navigators playing. I'm a big fan of Newfie music and these gents in particular. So we decided to stay for the next night too! We went to J & K Cafe in he morning. Keith at J & K actually gave me a piece of his salmon from his breakfast and handed me a bottle of moose to take home! Geraldine insisted that we say hi to Viola in the house out at Cape Race. So we did and were invited in! Once back at the Motel, we had a good supper and were greeted as family for another evening of music and friends. We were offered to use people's 4-wheelers and trips into cabins for the next evening. They weren't open for breakfast the next day so Judy arranged a continental breakfast for our room and brought up a kettle and toaster with bread, coffee tea, yogurt, and muffins. We have travelled a fair amount but have never felt so welcomed or been treated so well. May 24th weekend and Labour Day weekend are supposed to be big events with great music - so we will probably be back twice a year from now on! Thanks EVERYONE for such a great weekend!
Best Accommodation Experience of our Nfld trip!
Wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights... this place was well located for our visits to some very important spots - Cape Race - Mistaken Point. The rooms were very adequate with comfortable beds and clean surroundings. The food in the restaurants was very good... plentiful... authentic featuring Newfoundlands typical fare - i. e Jig supper on sunday, bake apple tart... but..... the best part of our experience was the owners Mary and Jerome -they made us feel at home and were very helpful in arranging our tour of Mistaken Point. The best - I would recommend a stay here and would return for sure!
Out of the fog, home away from home.
Friendly people, good food, excellent service! This inn welcomes you in a style traditional to Newfoundland. Central to all local activities. Convenience store around the corner. Location is well marked from all directions. Dining room is top notch; I was on a photography mission and am sorry I didn't photograph the dining room or food presentations; will add to my list of things to do when I go back in the fall.
The Food was good but the service was awful
My wife and I ate here for dinner in August while vacationing in Newfoundland. Its basically the only place in town. We had the chicken alfredo and the caesar salad which were both very good. What made it a bad experience was the service. Our server, Judy, basically ignored us. My wife and I drink water for our meals. Halfway through our meal she came over and asked how everything was and I requested a refill of my water. She left. When we were mostly done I got her attention and asked for water again and she quickly said " I didn't forget you " and walked away. I thought she would be returning with water but she never returned until we were done, and then she had the water for us and mumbled something about being busy. It was like she felt it was beneath her to refill our water glasses. Very poor service.
We just stopped and ate
On a weekend motorcycle trip around the Irish Loop we stopped here for lunch at the " halfway " point. Unfortunately, our experience was poor. The dining room was extremely warm with no fans or air conditioning. The young server in the dining room was terrible; she, audibly complained about how many " foreigners " were around that day for lunch, never offered us water (even though it was 28C outside and warmer inside), and forgot our drinks until after we reminded her once our food had already arrived. The dining room has an open door into the motel hallway and a staff member was vacuuming the hall while we were eating; she might as well been vacuuming right at our table it was so loud and none of the staff thought of closing the door so restaurant patrons wouldn't be bothered. There was a serious lack of customer respect on the motels behalf. The food was bad even for simple food. Frozen low quality hamburger patties were served on our burgers with decent French fries, I would definitely recommend anything else but the hamburgers if you need to stop there and eat. (the choices are few in that area). I was embarrassed afterwards because I had recommended eating there based on a previous recommendation from a family member. I am an easy going person by nature and I wasn't expecting a huge 4 star menu at such a small establishment. Having been a trained chef however, your few items you do serve should be of high quality when your menu is limited and certainly your wait staff should be curtious and pleasant to their patrons. In closing, I'd pack a picnic or stay away from dining at the hotel. The place was clean, however, I would not stay in the hotel based on my dining experience and the demeanor of the staff.
Way overpriced for what you get
I stayed one night at the Trepassey Motel as my boyfriend and I were on our way to Cape St Mary and needed a place to stay in the Irish Loop. I found the Trepassey Motel online as their website seemed decent, and although the rate per night seemed high at $99, we had no other choice in the area that I could find. We arrived in the evening at the motel and restaurant and checked in. The motel seemed very dated and not well-kept. The restaurant showed signs of age, however the meal was decent and the service was pleasant. The room however is a different story - it was dated, smelled old and I found 4 insects in the washroom. Overall, it was an uncomfortable stay as I questioned it's cleanliness. This motel is appropriately rated 2 star, but they charge 4 star prices. I would not recommend this motel unless it was half the price.
Customer service par excellence
Firstly, this is an absolutely lovely inn with an exceptional staff (Carol Ann, Judy, Janet, Linda, Colleen, Anna, and the master of the kitchen, Tim.) I arrived just as the kitchen was closing, yet chef Tim whipped up some fish 'n chips for me that was delicious and plentiful (as were subsequent meals). I then registered for a room and was pleased to find that the rooms were very clean and modern having recently been renovated. The next morning there were a couple backhoes working out in the neighborhood and I was disappointed by the very early disruption to my sleep. I spoke with Judy and she introduced me to Carol Ann. I requested a room on the other side of the inn for my second night. Unfortunately, those rooms were filled. However, Carol Ann negotiated an accommodation elsewhere in the inn that was far more than I anticipated. I was so impressed. Management was incredibly responsive to my request and I couldn't have been more pleased. I do looking forward to returning to Trepassey and staying at the inn again in the near future. It was such a welcome experience. Though best of all was the kindness and professionalism of the staff. An absolutely lovely experience.
Food and drinks
I was down for fishing with 2 friends and we stopped in for a bite to eat and a few beers the service was friendly the beers are cold and the food was hot it was a good spot to have a nice little meal
Restaurant Review - Our Oasis in The Barrens
We came in off the ferry from Nova Scotia and decided to take the back roads, the shoreline roads to St John. Oops! Lots of bays, coves, inlets and hills. Our drive was pretty but slow. It was lunch time and we thought we'd stop at the next opportunity. There was NO opportunity. Eventually we rolled into Trepassey and - lo! - there was the Edge on the corner. An hour later we'd had a fine lunch, had an even finer chat with the owner and we were on our way. The others in the dining area seems to be locals... everyone in quiet conversation, having a quiet lunch, and enjoying the view. The food was good, the sevice was good, the price was right. No complaints. AND... it saved us!
Service above and beyond
From the minute we arrived, the owners (who live on site) couldn't do enough for us. We planned on being out late taking photos of the beautiful surroundings, so they made a special effort to cook for us after the dining room was closed. They knew the area very well and advised us on where to get the very best pictures. The dining room itself has a most incredible view of the town and the food was all " home cooked " on site. Delicious local fare. The fish was fresh and pan fried to perfection; the fish cakes were next to none.
Our best night in Newfoundland!
An older motel and restaurant that has been managed by a caring hand for a long time. The food menu offers an extensive variety of reasonably priced home cooked food and if you are really lucky to catch the owner at a quiet moment you'll be treated to some wonderful Nfld hospitality! Great hospitaily, rooms need attention
Along the Irish Loop this is really your only choice in the area for accommodations. The motel and it's rooms are pretty outdated. However the staff here are very friendly and the food at the restaurant was well prepared and extremely tasty. There isn't much for entertainment in the area but it does offer a comfortable place to rest your head after a long day of driving. I had a chance to sit and meet with the owner and he was really friendly and warm like most of the people who grew up on this spectacular island of Newfoundland.
GREAT suite and the food was amazing, the staff are also great, if you are doing the Irish Loop plan to stay here one
Food, staff and suite all fantastic. From Alberta and well worth 1 night out of St. John's to do the Irish Loop and stay here. There are many spots to travel to from this location. They have some of the best food on the Island and VERY helpful staff.
Updated Inn also Serves Fantastic Dinners and Breakfasts
The innkeeper Carol Anne has been working to update this inn, and the results are very nice. The area was quiet, bed was super comfortable, and the new shower great. We spent one night here, and dinner (seafood fettuccini) in the restaurant was one of the finest I have had. The following morning, we ate an excellent breakfast with Carol Anne filling in for the cook who had an issue at home. Great food and even greater conversation with 80-year-old Irish Catholic priest Peter and Carol Anne. We discussed many things and laughed continuously. Great people and a great facility.
Great Food Comfy Beds
I can't tell you about the scenery here because we were fogged in for the most part. We did catch the odd glimpse and it promised great beauty. The motel was great. The rooms clean and comfortable. My only complaint was our room's proximity to the side door. It squeaked loudly when opened and BANGED shut every time someone went in and out. We were thankful everyone was tired and turned in by 10 p. m. The restaurant was great. We had seafood pasta and chicken. Breakfast was also very good. I would have given it 5 if not for the door.
Beautiful spot with extremely friendly staff
My partner and I visited the Edge of Avalon Inn at the end of May. The rooms were newly renovated and looked great. We can't say enough about the staff - they made our stay extra special. We would also recommend the restaurant. The food was very tasty (highly recommend the partridge berry tart).
Wonderful Place to Stay
My husband and I stayed at the Trepassey Hotel while touring the Irish Loop. The owner was very friendly and took time to share lots of stories and information of the area. The food was excellent and the presentation was great. Our room was very clean and well equipped with everything we needed. All in all, we had a great experience here. Thanks, Gerome. You have been a great host!!
Unexpected
We were driving the Irish loop, and came upon this restaurant. It was very good. Simple food and delicious. You have the best fries. And the view of the harbour and ocean was spectacular. And thank you for having a growler outside your window for us to look at while eating. I recommend anyone driving the Irish loop should stop here to have bite.
Just alright
The motel is dated could use some work. I found our room to have the odor of old cigarette smoke and the bed could use a new mattress. We had a good stay anyway, friendly staff; I was a little disappointed that the laundry wasn't available as it appeared in the travel guide. The restaurant menu had lots to choose from and reasonably priced. We spoke to the owner at breakfast and he explained he would like to do some update especially in the restaurant but it's hard to find someone willing to do the work.
Very Impressed!
This is a small family-owned property, Room was super clean and the king size bed was comfortable. Service was great -- I was at work and the staff looked after my little dog by taking her for a walk and giving her a drink. Nice gesture. Food in the restaurant was home cooked and plentiful. Staff was very committed to making you feel at home, welcomed and eager to please. I highly endorse this property as a stopover for a meal and / or lodging anyone traveling the Irish Loop. Two thumbs up!
Pleasant experience
It was difficult to decide whether to give this business 3 or 4 stars. Perhaps if I rated based on what I expected to find in a similar community, I might rate it higher. A few complaints knocked it down. I agree with another reviewer that it could get warm in the dining area. It wasn't warm outside, but the dining area, basically situated in a greenhouse, got a bit uncomfortable. Over our two days and several meals, we had scallops, shrimp, fish & chips, and the hearty and Canadian breakfasts. Each was prepared to our liking, and our waitstaff was pleasant and prompt. The owners had friends in during our stay, but that didn't seem to interfere with their attention to us or our rooms (we did hear some late night conversation filtering up from the basement, though). The rooms could use a bit of improvement - not " updating " so much as repairing aging components. We also saw a few sow bugs in our room. Bottom line, if you're going through Trepassey and have occasion to eat or sleep, this B & B will serve just fine.
Great Place to Stay After Hiking the East Coast Trail!
We hiked 3 days on the most southern parts of the East Coast Trail and spent two great nights at the Edge of the Avalon - highly recommend it! The food was excellent, especially the seafood fettuccine, and breakfast was hearty (important for us with the long hikes we did in the surrounding area). The bar was well stocked with local NL brews. The service was excellent too - the staff made us lunches to take on our hikes and the Innkeeper went out of her way to make us feel welcome and offer advice on the area (Mistaken Point is just around the corner but we had to leave that for our next trip). The Inn has been renovated recently and it was so good to come back to the bright, comfy rooms and the great meals. The Trepassey area has so much to offer visitors (hiking, kayaking, berry picking, fishing, mountain biking, fossils, road cyclists doing the Irish Loop etc.). We'll be back when the Cappahayden to Chance Cove portion of the ECT is completed and also to tour Mistaken Point - and we will stay at the Edge of the Avalon again!
Wonderful Experience
Spent a night with a large group of family members and had a wonderful experience. This is an older motel which has just received a full facelift which has been nicely done with a rustic Newfoundland theme. The rooms were quite clean and comfortable and the scale of the motel size made this an excellent venue for our large family group. We were treated to tasty lobster supper and delicious breakfast feast during our stay. Both meals were very well prepared and presented. The restaurant and lounge area are brightly lit by the large surrounding windows providing a beautiful view of the harbour and ocean vista. Located only a short drive away you will also find the newly acclaimed World Unesco Heritage site at Mistaken Point. This is a must see experience in the area along with the great hiking opportunities. Hospitality was great with this family run business and added to our total experience. Would definitely return again.
Excellent friendly service
our stay was lovely. The owners looked after our every need, the beds were comfortable, and the food was great. It was a great place to spend the night during our photography jaunt around The Irish Loop!
This review only covers the restaurant!
I ate here twice, it is the only game in town. Fortunately, they do not take advantage of this. The food was very good, the house salads excellent! The staff were friendly and on the ball, and it has a good, casual atmosphere with views at the front tables. Only downside was no scrunchions for my pan fried cod: (Oh well, nobody is perfect! Good place!
A Taste of Newfoundland Hospitality
We have stayed at the Trepassey Motel for many years and have enjoyed every visit. The owners are warm, welcoming, and a font of information on what to see and do on the southern shore. The staff too are friendly and helpful. The full service restaurant is a great place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast looking out over the harbor and a welcome sight after a day trip to the archeological dig and museum in Ferryland, to Cape Race, or to see the fossils at Mistaken Point, or a drive to the bird sanctuary at Cape St. Mary's or whale watching at St. Vincent's. The motel is a perfect home base for wherever your fancy takes you. For a taste of Newfoundland hospitality, stay at the Trepassey Motel. Come as a tourist, you'll leave as a friend planning your next visit.
Friendliness and Service count a lot!
My family has stayed at the Trepassey Motel at least a week every summer for the last ten years. It is not the Ritz, but we have found it to be clean and comfortable. The owners and staff have gone out of their way for us on numerous occasions. In fact, the owner opened the motel for us in the middle of January, during a snowstorm so that we would have accommodation at the time of my Mother's death. We look forward each summer to the time spent there with caring people who have become our dear friends.
Delightful little piece of heaven for a hungry traveller
We travelled in the fog for hours and then stumbled on this place. It didn't look like much from the outside but the inside is gorgeously decorated with awesome views of the water. The staff is extremely helpful and courteous. We had the fish and chips and salmon dinner which tasted amazing and was a healthy portion with some nice garnishes! We were thrilled that they had Quidi Vidi on tap and enjoyed a pint with our food.
Awesome
I am a business man that travels daily. It is normal for me to have a Motel at least once a week. This community is a secluded piece of heaven, and hibernates in the winter months. As I had business in the area, I called to make a reservation only to find that they are seasonal. Without hesitation, the owner came to the Inn, and opened it just for me at 9 o'clock at night. There were no staff on since they were closed for the winter, but gave me a tour through their Inn and made sure I had everything I needed including coffee and muffins in the morning. The room was recently renovated and spotless. I am making plans to visit this part of the island this summer again, and staying at the Inn is a must. I can't say thank you enough John, and it was indeed a pleasure to meet you.
Thank you For making us feel at home!
We are spending the night with family to honour a beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend. The staff has been amazing and made this celebration and tribute to the person we love a wonderful experience. Thank you for the beautiful accommodations, fabulous food and great entertainment. We loved every minute. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! <3
Nice little place
Comfortable little place to stay for a couple of nights. The rooms were of a nice size with two double beds. The bathroom was clean, moderate and a good hot water supply for a nice shower. Had the lobster dinner and was fantastic. and reasonably priced. Nice size lobster with three different salads. In the morning breakfast was basic but good. Has a bar on site with live entertainment. I found the staff to be extremely exceptional and extremely helpful and thoughtful. Would be nice to see the cost of breakfast included in the cost of the room. This most times determines the place where I will stay The view from the hotel is of the harbour and ocean. (if there is no fog) Would definitely stay here again.
