Beautiful historical guest house with the best host

We stayed here to attend a friends party. Martin the host and owner is probably the nicest, most amenable and interesting host you could wish to encounter. Communication pre our visit was excellent with responses quick and so helpful. On arrival we were greeted with fresh coffee, tea and homemade cake. He then gave us glasses, ice, juice etc for us to enjoy our wine we had brought. The building is just beautiful and well maintained and in keeping with it's wonderful history which he shared with us as asked. The rooms are spacious and well furnished and although we had to share the bathroom between our party we were fully aware of this when we booked and the bathroom was spotlessly clean. A hairdryer was in our room and fresh coffee / tea is given as asked. Breakfast was amazing, served piping hot, with a good selection of food from fresh strawberries / blueberries to a full English and everything in between. Central in the village with a large garden and near the local pub it really is a gem.

Perfectly comfortable stop over

Very nice, very comfortable, very clean. Excellent host, breakfast lovely, excellent value for money. Can't fault our stay, Martin our host was excellent, lovely location with a great public house a stone's throw away, would definitely stay again.

Excellent stay

Lovely stay in this charming period house. Martin, was wonderful, with cake and tea when we arrived late in the evening. We didn't get to see the convalescing hedgehog, but after a comfortable nights sleep, the following morning were treated to a fantastic English breakfast, cooked to perfection. If ever we are back in Devon we'll pay another visit.

The highlight of the stay was meeting the owner!

We loved our stay in Elmfield and will definitely be back. The house is beautiful - very georgian looking and the furniture is very appropriate to the period. There was a lot to see - very interesting political memorabilia. We were made to feel very welcome by Martin right from the beginning. We were served tea and home-made cakes in the lounge as a welcome. The room was lovely. We had the ensuite and it overlooked the beautiful garden beyond which is Dartmoor itself. Martin could not have been more helpful. He even rang to make a dinner reservation for us with the Clovelly Inn in the next village. The breakfast was amazing! It was abundant and very high quality! We were made to feel so welcome that by the end of the two days we felt more like house guests in an English country house! I cannot recommend it highly enough and we will be going back the next time we are in that area.

Lovely stay whilst on cycling trip stopover

Martin was an excellent host and made us feel very welcome with tea and home made cake on our arrival. The welcome we recieved was more akin to that of a friend rather than a B & B host! It was great to stopover here whilst cycling from Plymouth to Ilfracombe, and we could stow our bikes safely overnight. The pub in the village does decent food and ale. The breakfast in the morning was excellent, I will be sure to visit again when in the area!

Lovely old house, with a perfect host!

Booked here for one night and stayed three days, the Bedroom room was comfortable and full of period charm. The sitting room was a lovely place for Martins tea and cake after a wet day out side, real fire roaring and fabulous conversation. Great breakfast so much choice..... just a lovely hidden gem

Wedding

We stayed for two nights on 20th and 21st December '19 for our daughter, Sapphire and Chris's wedding. Martin is a fantastic host, nothing was to much trouble. Good food, comfortable beds, some places the showers are slow not here, powerful and hot. Martin was very acomadating to the fact we were opening champaign, we cleared up after ourselves so not to cause extra work fo him. Thank you so much Martin for being so welcoming. Great stay

We needed somewhere to stay due to attending a family gathering in Northlew and ended up with 2 nights at Elmfield. Can't fault it - the house is old but with it comes a ton of character and the house is full of many interesting antiques to admire. We had the bedroom with en-suite which I recommend for privacy. Both rooms have lovely view of garden. The proprietor, Martin looked after us faultlessly and our 1 year old Labrador even better! We were met with tea and cake upon arrival, which was unexpected and greatly received after a 4hr journey. He also kindly helped us out with a dinner reversation on a Sunday night (eating out in that part of Devon on a Sunday night doesn't have many options). Breakfast was absolutely delicious - home cooked and clear focus on quality then quantity. We had a great stay and if need to stay in area again, would happily stay again!

Beautiful place

Warmly welcomed by the lovely Martin and his friendly dog. Tea & delicious cake in front of cosy fire place on arrival. Shame I was heading out for the evening, as I could have happily stayed here. I stayed in single room, which was elegant and cosy. Comfy bed, which made for a pleasant night's sleep. Bathroom is shared with other guests, but towels are provided in room. Banquet breakfast offering fruit, yoghurt and an excellent choice of cereals. Martin cooked a delicious, hearty breakfast and cooks a perfect poached egg! This place is superb. Thank you Martin, you do a fantastic job.

Absolutely superb

What a wonderful place, we were welcomed in and shown to our lovely room and were immediately invited to the drawing room for a lovely pot of tea and homemade cake, which was most welcome after a 6 hr journey. Martin couldn't have made us feel more welcome. We went to the Green Dragon on the village square for our evening meal and met the locals who were most welcoming and friendly, it's a wonderfully traditional pub, many hundreds of years old with oak beams a'plenty. Back at our room we soon fell asleep, it was so nice to have a comfortable bed made with traditional sheets and blankets. We were told by two different locals in the pub that Martins breakfast's were the best in Devon, they were not wrong. It was a veritable banquet that met us in the morning, with fresh fruit, every cereal known to man, and a beautiful cooked breakfast with not a baked bean in sight, (I hate baked beans on a breakfast, so this pleased me very much). There was homemade bread and a vast choice of preserves, all locally made. We finally said our goodbyes, but we will be back, but for a longer stay next time. Thank you Martin

Very pleasant weekend break

It's an attractive and comfortable b & b with a lived in feel, lots of pictures and antiques. We stayed for a weekend in order to attend a wedding in the village on the Saturday, and we felt welcomed, looked after and well fed - breakfast was superb. Elmfield House is in the middle of Northlew village so we were able to walk to the church and leave our car in the drive. Martin was an excellent and attentive host. Would recommend.

Immediate help provided whenever we asked. Exceptional host. Superb breakfast

Immediate help provided whenever we asked. Exceptional host. We were made to feel welcome relaxed and safe from the start. Superb breakfast. The living room was a useful place to relax for early risers like myself, and the grounds were delightful, seeming quite extensive and useful for dog walking.

A warm welcome and fabulous breakfast (again!)

I stayed at Elmfield (again) earlier this month and, as before, a warm welcome, pot of tea, spotlessly clean room and fabulous breakfast were provided. There is always someone interesting to talk to at breakfast. My dog stayed with me (and has before) so no problem there, I am a vegetarian - again, not a problem - and there are useful guides and information available. The garden was still lovely and green in this hot weather with roses in bloom.

2018-07-04 16:48:26

Excellent and characterful

Genial host, and pleasant conversations with fellow guests. Substantial (!!) breakfast. Well positioned in a pleasant village with a good local. Would definitely pay a return visit if in the area again.

Martin will make you feel very welcome

Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, in this amazing property. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived, with Martin providing coffee, cake and biscuits as well as beautiful room, overlooking the garden. The shower was phenomenal and it was great to have a room with character. Breakfast has to be seen to be believed, with too many items as part of the full english to list, but the hogs pudding was great. The Green Dragon pub is well worth a visit as great food and hospitality made the stay so good. We enjoyed the first night so much we booked for 2 days later as part of our return trip. Will recommend this place to friends. Very dog friendly too.

It really doesn't get any better than this

From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty, this elegant Georgian house furnished with antiques could not be improved upon. We were greeted with such warmth and delicious home made cake and a proper pot of tea made with leaf tea, not those awful bags! Our en suite bedroom was charming with quality linen and every possible convenience and how lovely to have proper bedding and not just a duvet. Our breakfast was without doubt one of the finest we have ever had at a bed and breakfast with home made jams, home baked bread, fresh strawberries, melon, grapefruit, a huge selection of cereals, proper butter and a full English cooked breakfast using only quality ingredients - thick bacon, a choice of eggs not to mention all of the other many additional cooked items that were to numerous to mention! We stayed for two days and wished it had been two weeks and we can't wait to go back - the owner Martin is a total delight and nothing was ever to much trouble, we can't wait to go back!

2nd to none

Elmfield is in a great location and owned by a very welcoming host, Martin. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and very comfortable bedrooms. Sadly we only stayed for 1 night as a stop over as part of a 4 day tour, but would recommend Elmfield to others who could use it as a base for a few days to visit the local area. The Green Dragon pub across the road is also worth a visit which serves good food and some great ale. Martin provides a great choice at breakfast, which he'll prepare at a time to suit you.

Fantastic Breakfast!

We had a lovely night's stay here en route to Cornwall. We were greeted with tea and cake which was delicious! Martin was a lovely host, and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him whilst he brought out the most wonderful kedgeree for breakfast (this needs to be ordered in advance, but is absolutely worth it!). The rooms were cosy, clean and tastefully appointed. We would definitely stay again!

Excellent host and breakfast

We stayed at Elmfield recently whilst in the area. Martin was an excellent host and made our stay very enjoyable. Tea and cake on arrival and superb breakfasts. And the room was very comfortable. The B & B also takes dogs, which is great, as many dont. A lovely house.

Warm, welcoming comfortable stay with charm

I have now stayed at Elmfield 3 times (with and without my partner) after finding this Devon gem by chance on Trip adviser. Martin Perry is the perfect host with a very flexible and relaxed approach- (e. g. times of arrival and breakfast and whilst no tea makers in rooms he will make a pot when you want it, There is also a very comfortable lounge for guests and the whole period house is stashed with beautiful antique furniture to match its charm. The breakfast is hard to beat and lasted me all day! Finally North Lew has a great pub yards away and its setting is beautiful in itself.

Nice Georgian house in rural location

Nice Georgian house in rural location. Good room, (beautiful curtains!) no en suite, but I knew that when I booked. Nice garden. It seemed a long way from Okehampton, 7 miles in fact. Good wifi. I found the room rather cold. Huge cooked breakfast arrive - more than I could possibly eat.

Comfortable, dog friendly B & B with the personal touch

We stayed for 1 night at Elmfield on our way to Cornwall. I was pleased to find somewhere to stay with our 2 dogs. This is a small bed and breakfast. The owner is very pleasant and accommodating. Our room was spacious, well furnished and clean with a large en suite bathroom. Breakfast was a plenty with a wide range of fieshly cooked produce. The local pub serves home cooked food. Not much else in the village but would definately stay again when I'm in the area.

Very good bed and breakfast in an old fashioned sort of way

We stayed one night here recently and apart from finding the place everything was very good. The house is lovely with over an acre of garden to roam. There is a lounge to use on the ground floor full of books and maps, etc. Upstairs there is a further selection of books to read. I had a double room which was very spacious and rather grand. Furnishings are old fashioned but good. There are TVs in the rooms. If you want tea and coffee the host will gladly bring to you. This is free. Wifi is free and good. Necessary as reception on your phone will most likely be poor. We ate in the inn 100metres away in the village square. It was very good. Two main courses plus 2 pints for just over £20. There was Morris dancing in the square which was a modest attraction. The house and village is peaceful and relaxing. The host is on the ball and interesting. As others have said the place is dog friendly and cyclist friendly. Everything was, spotlessly clean. Only downside is the sharing of toilet bathing facilities. The shower was strong and good. I would recommend and stay again.

Beautifully decorated and a lovely owner

We stayed at this bed and breakfast for a weekend break as we were doing a wine tasting nearby. The place was beautifully decorated with a very charming and homely theme. Breakfast was lovely. It is pet friendly and we didn't realise that before we booked which was our fault. My husband sometimes gets allergic to dogs and cats but we had antihistamines and he was fine throughout the weekend. There was a slight " dog " odour in our bedroom when we first got there but that disappeared over time. We would definitely recommend this place if you're visiting the area as long as you don't mind pets. We felt very well looked after.

Lovely B & B

A lovely house and a warm welcome. Very dog-friendly house, in fact Meg made herself rather too much at home! The pub was only a short walk away, also dog-friendly, and we had a nice meal there. No facilities for making tea in the room but they will (and did) bring a tea tray to the room. The only slight minus was the lack of an en-suite bathroom, but the need to share it didn't cause us any problems. We had a lovely breakfast - smoked haddock and poached eggs for him and poached eggs for me. The full English was on offer and all tastes catered for! Lovely coffee and as much toast as we wanted. We would certainly stay there again.

Fabulous short stay

I stayed here for 2 nights with my son and 2 dogs. I've never felt so relaxed in a dog friendly establishment. Nothing is too much trouble, the hosts are so welcoming, even to the point of watching over the dogs while we ate breakfast. And on the subject of breakfast - fantastic. Delicious, good quality and plentiful. And the tea was strong and very welcome, especially lovely having tea served in the sitting room in front of the open fire. Lovely bedroom, with lots of personal touches. And fab large garden for the dogs. Unbelievable value for what you get. Highly recommend it!!

A step back in time

Had a wonderful stay at elmfield. So relaxing. Lovely hosts. Nothing too much trouble. Lovely tray of tea on arrival. Very dog friendly. Beautiful clean room with fresh flowers. Wonderful breakfast. Shame we were only there for one night. Only 15 mins from A30. Will definately be back. Thankyou Brian 😃

Old fashioned values

Wonderful stay here, been here a few times now, as a single traveller and as a couple. The house is in a wonderful village of northlew, okehampton. Elmfield b & b is a great traditional guest house. Martin and Brian have an enchanting way of making you feel very welcome here. house is wonderfully furnished in an older quality style. Rooms are well furnished with comfy beds. Though television in our room had no signal. And they don't put kettles and bits in room. What they will do is make you a pot of tea or coffee with homemade biscuits. And real China cups and saucers, oh to be transported to a tasteful time. We had no en-suite which you do miss, but to be fair we was aware at time of booking. We had to laugh when in bed, at hearing the desperate foot steps to the bathroom in the early hours. breakfast is a feast of home cooked goodies. Inc jam, marmalade, biscuits, there breakfasts are wonderful. we had steamed haddock with poached eggs and toast and a pot of coffee. All excellent. Good parking, Well worth a relaxed visit.

Lovely little guest house

Great country guest house! I stayed here for one evening and the service was great. Its hidden away off the beaten track however not difficult to find at all, just take the country roads with caution. The room was lovely and old English. Nice old style décor with a comfy double bed. Shared bathroom which was exceptionally clean and came with toiletries. Breakfast was served in the dining room which was lovely and cosy. Plated breakfast was provided along a variety of cereals, fruit and yoghurt with toast and a range of Jams. Although this is the home of the owners, you don't feel like you are invading somebody's home. The owners are lovely and very friendly. Great price too!! Would defiantly recommend and return if I am around the area.

Luxurious

A beautiful place to stay. Tranquil setting I'm a fussy so and so and I couldn't find anything that wasn't exactly how I would want it to be. Ooh and linen pillow cases with lace edgings and fresh flowers in my room. Such bliss. Beautiful gardens all you can hear is the wind rustling in the trees

2014-08-26 08:21:28

Spacious, Lovely location

Stayed here for 1 night. Friendly welcoming owner. Is like staying in someone's house rather than a b & b. Breakfast was superb, loads to choose from and well cooked. The only downer was we did not have ensuite so had to share the bathroom but we knew that when we booked and is reflected in the price which was very reasonable for the standard.

2014-08-09 16:38:32

A hidden gem

We arrived at Elmfield to be greeted by friendly animals and hosts Martin and Brian. We were made to feel at home immediately with a lovely pot of tea and coffee. Our room was very comfortable and we both slept well on on both nights. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of home made goodies. Nothing was too much trouble which gave us a stress free break which was much appreciated. We look forward to returning in the near future.

Perfect getaway

We couldn't of asked for a more accommodating b & b, arriving at 2 in the morning we were greeted by Martin who at even 2am asked would we like a tea or coffee after our travel to get there, our room was gorgeous, a comfy French style bed, everything spotlessly clean, we awoke to find we had slept in later then expected, coming down to the breakfast room at 11:30 thinking we were to late, most b & bs stop serving at half 8 or 9am, but to our delight Martin was not put out by this and cooked us up a breakfast of champions the house was beautiful, and the garden to die for And sooooooo peaceful, brain and Martin were great characters, we had some lovely chats, and we wish them all the best, and we hope to return soon x S. B & S. hughes

Great nights sleep!

I booked one night as my son was doing the TenTors. Martin is an excellent host and we chatted for ages over a cup of tea. My room was the en-suite with lovely views of the garden. The bed was comfortable and wifi worked fine. The breakfast filled me up for the day and couldn't fault it. Great setting! Peaceful.

2013-07-31 13:30:07

Wonderful Experience

Our stay at Elmfield was a delightful experience. Located just off the Market Square in a lovely village some 6 miles from Oakhampton, the setting is tranquil and peaceful. The gardens are beautifully kept and a delight to walk round. Martin and Brian are perfect hosts. The breakfasts are superb and more than adequate. Our room was all we could ask for. The whole experience was truly amazing. We will definitely stay there again in the future.

Weekend Break

We have just returned from a two night stay at Elmfield. We stayed in the ensuite room which overlooked the garden. Martin was taking part in a local production so arranged for his friends Yvonne and Tony to be there to meet us. They made us coffee and Tony is a member at the golf club where we were playing during our stay so he was able to offer us lots of course knowledge! Breakfast set us up for the day. Martin and Brian were excellent hosts and we intend to book again for next year. We didn't try the local pub (it was recommended) but had a drive out to the Red Room at Hatherleigh. Food was excellent.

Lovely stay

Much enjoyed our stay in mid June. Martin proved to be an excellent and entertaining host and provider of delicious breakfasts. The house is lovely and the rooms great. What was particularly good and helpful was the flexibility in terms of breakfast time - as we were working it was refreshing to have a host not bulk at an early one! Karen R

Simply wonderful

We have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at Elmfield. Martin made us feel immediately welcome by sitting down with us on the first night for a lengthy and highly interesting conversation. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Best two nights sleep in a long time. A charming house with a charming owner. Thank you...

A delight from beginning to end. Will be back

Warmly welcomed by the owner, the very charming Martin Perry, we enjoyed spacious accommodation in a lovely, yet homely, house in the heart of the village, just a one minute walk from the pub. Incredibly reasonably priced, this would be an excellent place to use as a base for walking and exploring historic buildings, the coast, countryside and moors. Definitely booking in for next year for a longer stay.
