Great live music
Fun pub with great live music and in a good location close to the harbourfront. The music was fantastic and the atmosphere was lively
Horrible experience
The bouncers (if you would even call them that) at this pub are DISGUSTING. I went with my family and instead of telling us that kids are not permitted (which I can completely understand) one of them just flicked his hands towards my sons as if to dismiss them. It took 3 times asking what he was trying to say to us for him to just come out with it. Absolutely disgusting behaviour with no respect at all for anyone. Honestly it's a very bad look for the pub to have people so rude at the front. Even if I was without my kids I would never set foot in there again and will be telling everyone I know who plans to visit Halifax to stay away from here. They need to remind their employees that everyone no matter their age deserves human decency and respect.
Très bien
Un pub respectable. Les employés étaient sympathiques et les nachos étaient bien. Bel endroit pour prendre un verre.
Just go for a beer
The servers were nice, beer was cool, food was terrible. There aren't really any vegetarian options so shared a mixed appetizer. I knew everything would be deep fried, just didn't know everything would taste the same. There was also some extra dried out fish pieces included that weren't in the description. Bathrooms are old and very sad.
King pub
I am biased, i love this bar. Been coming here since 1990's Great ambiance, great food, friendly helpful staff. Its not the Ritz but its a real place with heart. I had tenderloin steak tips with Black pepper mash, carrot and turnip mix, mushrooms and onions. It was amazing. Very tasty. Our onion ring starters were crisp, non greasy and delightfully drizzled with honey. Onion Rings as they should be. My cousin had Poutine and the gravy was just perfect. Ok i paid a bit over the odds for a Pint of Murphy's stout but it is imported. Our total bill for a two course meal and drinks was $62. Please check out the great range of pub tea shirts at a reasonable price of $17.99. Not $36 dollars for a thinner shirt at New Scotland Shops or $25-$30 at most others. Split Crow is THE place to be in Granville St. just up from the waterfront.☺🍻
Great Place
Well finally came back to the area and after moving away over 20 years ago. Came in for some Saturday music beer and snacks Had some beer and had the nachos. The band was a little loud for my liking but it could be the fact that I am not use to it. The nachos were great although the peppers were hot for my liking but I will have to say that at least all the nachos were covered in cheese and toppings unlike a lot of other places I have had the nachos The decor was absolutely what I was expecting compared to some of the comments I have seen on here. Some people expect the world. The seating and tables were in good shape. When I return again and hopefully for good, this will be a regular place I will visit as the staff was very friendly which is a huge plus in my books
Seniors and those with shallow pockets avoid this place
We went on St. Paddys day to the Split Crow. The Triangle Irish bar was too busy. We got charged $5 each at the door for cover charge. Then we got served breakfast and two drinks. Thirty minutes later an older later wanted us to pay because we didn't have a " tab ". We paid. I asked if she was trying to get rid of us as there were many young people at the Split Crow. Then we got a second round of drinks for which the waiter wanted payment. We paid. Then the first waiter showed up and wanted payment. The first bill was only for food he said. We paid 4 times in about an hour! I am sure staff were relieved when we left and didn't try to make a break for it and not pay. Those seniors are nothing but trouble! This was out last visit to the Split Crow.
Popped in for some " pops " !
Tons of history built into this quirky, rustic and welcoming bar!! Plenty of seating. Big, bold bar. Staff was extremely helpful. We were there early in the evening because east coast life picks up after 10, so not sure how busy they would get at night..
Please fix this place
While the Split Crow May have a fine history, it's present state is sorry. It smells terrible and feels sad.
Nice music
Can't remember the last time we had to pay a cover charge to get into a pub and wouldn't do it again. At the bar my husband went through 3 beers shown on the board before they actually had one. Service was quite slow and I wouldn't say the pub was full. We found seats facing the band - Tristan Legg and the Mad dogs - and also the door. Seemed very selective as to whom they charged for entrance so maybe a tourist con was my feeling. I did quite enjoy the band, a mixture of well known and unknown songs. Just stayed for 2 drinks.
Unremarkable! Smelled of stale beer. Every surface you touched was sticky. Would not recommend
Nothing to set this place apart from other pubs in Halifax. There are lots of nicer pub with better food on the waterfront. I would not recommend this place to friends.
Great pub
We went to this pub on our last evening in Halifax. We were there for happy hour so my Garrison IPA was on special. We had fish and chips to eat and it was really good. Great atmosphere at this pub and our server was excellent. Would certainly go back!
Great music, great bar
I was here during a live music night. The band was absolutely fantastic, playing a range of music for all likes. The beer is cold and service fantastic. I look forward to returning.
Great place to Drink with friends!
Typical prices, but power hour is a must! Often full and busy but quick and friendly service, great way to spend the night in Halifax
A Good Pub
Located close to the Halifax waterfront. It's a good decent pub with a good selection of food and beer at fair prices. In the evening they have live music.
GOOD FOOD AND MUSIC IN A HISTORIC ATMOSPHERE
My wife Karen and I took a seat at the far end of the bar while Andy sang and played acoustic guitar on the small stage by the front door. Adrian poured us frosty local brews and made us feel quite at home. The place is full of cool clutter and has that " make yourself comfy and have fun " quality. The Split crow is a nickname the locals gave the original Split Eagle when it opened with Nova Scotia's first liquor license in 1749. It offered good food, copious servings of grog and live music, as it still does. Back in the day ladies entertained gents and politics were discussed, which often lead to fights and Nova Scotia's first murder charge was one bar brawl result. We split the shepherd's pie. It was tasty and filling for two. We enjoyed the fried pickles but beware of the deep fried pepperoni as it was a ticket to the heartburn express for both of us. Locals as well as tourists frequent this Irish Bar and all seemed to play well together. We ate dinner here twice and would go back the next time we are in Halifax.
Beer coulda been colder
Stopped in mid-afternoon to have a few drinks and explore another piece of Halifax. They claim the Molson Canadian is served sub-zero, but that might be pushing it. It was definitely colder than the raspberry micro-brew I tried next. After 2 beers that were warm by the end, I switched things up to a Caesar. Apparently established in 1749 the building does offer some history. Pretty decent location, right near the waterfront. Service was fine, and they had two glass garage doors open to watch the city go by. A small patio was available outside as well. I would go back again.
Great Piece of Local Heritage
This place makes Halifax feel like home !! The oldest operating Pub in Halifax which has been around since the city was established. We were there in the early afternoon for drinks, Scott greeted us and whisked us to a street side window for a terrific view of the crowds passing by. The Pub has a menu which would have something for everyone. Great prices and generous servings. The staff are amazing and the live traditional east coast music makes the place ! Scott treats everyone like they're family ! Great job !! This place is a must see !!
Stopped in for a Quick Brew
this is a great location to either sit outside and enjoy the summer rays and drink a few cold ones. The munchies / appetizers they serve here are excellent and great value. On the weekends it is harder to find a table due to the live music but wait staff are wonderful and the food is always hot.
Drop by for a pint. Stayed for 3!
Looks to be a university type crowd but the bad was great so I had a good time! Will be dropping in again for sure!..👌
Casual Lunch
Nothing fancy for food but edible bar munchies for sure. We thought the service was ok lots of room for improvement. It wasn't busy when we were there and they seemed bored. We made our own fun. There is so much history in Halifax and this place has its own story, too. Check it out:)
Acceptable food
I was hoping for something locally sourced and inventive from the split crow menu, but it wasn't quite there. I had a soup and sandwich special. Mushroom soup and grilled cheese. The soup was tasty and seemed home made but the sandwich was a big flop. It was a kraft cheese slice or some other highly processed cheese between two slices if plain old grocery store dempsters bread. I make better grilled cheese at home with no effort. Beer and service was good.
Wonderful evening!!!
Had the opportunity to visit the Split Crow again after many years. It basically looked the same as I had remembered it from about 20 yrs ago which is a great pub atmosphere. It was early in the evening so not much of a crowd at that point. The waiter was a wonderful guy from Cape Breton who made my wife and I feel at home and welcome. We both had the same dish which was honey and lime haddock. I would definitely come back again when in Halifax
The worst service of any pub ever!
While the band and the atmosphere were great at the Split Crow, the service was God Awful and it was near impossible to get a drink. The bartenders and servers did not deserve any tip. I had the 2 worst service experiences in my life while in Halifax and this was one of them. The other was the pub in the Lord Nelson Hotel for breakfast on a Sunday morning. It was not worth the cover charge!
Food was poor
Came hear for food as we had seen a few around Canada. Salmon and rice was ok but was quite small and basic. Took over 10 mins to get the bill and asked a couple of times, in the end had to go to the till.
Finally went into the infamous Split Crow
After years of hearing about Split Crow from our son who attended University several years ago in Halifax, we finally decided to see what it was about. For 60+ seniors it turned out to be quite enjoyable. An obviously younger crowd, loud music and cheap beer (power hour) was a challenge but the duo playing older rock tunes was quite good and overall it is quite a bit of fun. However, if you are at all unsteady due to age or drink, watch the stairs down to the washroom!
great pub with good atmosphere
good food, good beer, good company.. what more could you want, all at a reasonable price!!!
Very Good Pub
I like when a Pub is able to be a Pub. This place is not trying to be anything but what it is. The Split Crow is in a great location in downtown Halifax. The Crow is handy to other Pubs and Halifax attractions. The food is typical Pub Fare.... but executed very well. The burger are huge and quite delicious (they claim to be the best in Halifax but I give that to My Other Brother Darrell). The Shepherd Pie was okay (they shouldn't put brocolli in it, they should cook the carrots inside it a little more), the fish n chips are good (read my reviews on fish n chips.... it is a maritime staple that quite frankly is hard to screw up). I was pleasantly surprised by their apple crumble that was so buttery and sweet. In short, they are making great efforts for great pub-style food. The ambiance is true Nova Scotia, only the Lower Deck can pull off a more intimate setting. The short, if pub hopping this is a good place to start.
great patio, great brews
We decided to stop here solely because the patio is on a corner. Nice pub, the food was decent - chicken wings - not recommended, but my hot hamburger was great! Decent prices and good service.
Great atmosphere!
Great atmosphere in a great neighbourhood with great live music. This kind of typified what a Halifax pub was to me before I arrived. I would definitely recommend checking this joint out if you are in Halifax especially if your a twenty or thirty something!
Awesome service, cheap beers, great live band
This place is great, went there on a Wed night, live band was great, $3.99 pizza deal was amazing. Oh and Doug made sure my beer was never empty lol
Great Beer, not so great food
We stopped for dinner last night. The cream ale was excellent. The fish and chips not so much. The batter was too heavy and not fully cooked in some spots. One piece of fish was good, the other too fishy. The pirogi appetizer was not what I expected and just ok. But we hung out and drank more beer and enjoyed the band that played after 9pm. Don't expect the servers to come around often. Plan on a relaxing evening. I would recommend this place for the beer and music, but would caution them on the food. I also would not recommend this place for a quick bite or drink.
Friendly, good, reasonably priced beer
Just popped in for a quick drink and stayed a little longer. The barman, Scottie, was very friendly and told us loads of history about Halifax. Good selection of flavoursome beers available at a good price
Terrible service
I have been to this bar about a dozen or so times on very busy evenings and slow ones. All but 2 of those we had terrible service... over 2 hours to get a waiter to serve us and we were one of 10 customers there. After the last time, I will neither go there or recommend this place to anyone travelling to or living in Halifax. I thought the food was ok at first until I read some citations they had against them by the food inspector... public info on the internet. If their kitchen is kept as poorly as their washrooms then it's no surprise. There are some really great bands there though if your looking for entertainment, and lots of cheap watered down beer on there weekly Thursday and Saturday power hours... you'll find most of the 19 year olds there then. It's unfortunate because this bar has a great patio and in a great location... they need to take better care of their customers and cleanliness.
Great beer good food
Our family stopped here for lunch after a other reviews on TA. The outside patio was full but we had a great table overlooking the sidewalk. My son had thier stout and I tried their bitter ale, both were great. The food was very reasonably priced pub style food and very tasty. Be prepared to have slower service. I found our Canadian neighbors kick back a bit, sort of like Europe. So, match the pace, slow down and enjoy. The Split Crow gets 4 thumbs up from this family!
Wonderful memories!
I visited the Split Crow in 1995 and then again in 2005. It hasn't changed at all (this is a very good thing). There's an amazing ambiance for those who just want to have a fun night out. I remember singing along to a Celtic band in 1995 (can't remember the name), and but by the end of the night the audience was collectively swaying their full mugs of beer in the air along to the beat of the music! I felt like I was living in another era. This place holds many wonderful memories for me, and I've only visited twice! If you're staying in Halifax, this is a place you must visit for a meal and a beer.
Best Pub in Halifax!
I just love The Split Crow! Everytime I come to Halifax, I am sure to make at least a few stops there! You just can't beat the staff or the entertainment! A must see for everyone!
One Great Week!
Enjoyed the Split Crow while in Halifax for a conference... great music, atmosphere and staff!! Hope to be there again!
Very fun pub
Very fun pub, most of the bands here will blow you out of the water, just make sure you get there early enough to hear them (arrive around 9-9:30). Guiness on draught, too.
Loved the music!
Visited The Split Crow over a few nights, when I was visiting Halifax for a week. Lively place, friendly atmosphere and the music is my strongest memory of the place. There was a band called " The Boys next Door ", who were playing there nearly every night and they were brilliant! They even sang a U2 song for us irish girls! I hope to make it back to beautiful Halifax someday, and when I do I'll certainly be heading back to The Split Crow Frieda, Ireland.
the finest of maritime attitude and atmosphere
My date and I were attracted to the lively music coming from within this place, and took seats on the open deck at dusk, drank some of the best drafts one could imahgine, and I mean BEST BEERS! We ate great victuals and loved the crowd and the band, we even got into singing maritime sea chants with the rest of the crowd, and did not want to leave this friendly and warm location in Halifax. I even bought souvenirs to pass out as gifts and I highly encourage you to drink and dine at the Split Crow for a taste of Nova Scotia!
Mmmmm.... cold beer!
Let's see; been here dozens of times. Remember some, don't remember others. Thursday nights are crazy with their " Power Hour " ($1 for a 12 oz. draught). Good food and lots of cute girls.
