A bit of a disappointment

I'm sure this place was wonderful in its day. It's a tad worn now. No breakfast at all, we were expecting a continental type as mentioned on Expedia. We tried several times to contact the owners with questions and never heard back at all. The only person we saw was the cleaning person the day after we arrived. We had the tiniest room, two small chairs were provided, but no place to put them so we could sit and visit. And the seats of one was so worn. Be very careful which room you choose. Coffee could be made using a Kureg located on the floor below us. If returning to Stratford, would choose another place.

Good choice, reasonable price

Our stay was very enjoyable and comfortable (very comfortable mattress), good breakfast, ideally situated location in the centre core of Stratford, helpful staff (thanks for all your assistance!) A great way to enjoy the theatre. We will plan to stay there again.

Sewage in the bathtub

The bath tub backed up with sewage when we returned from a play which we cleaned ourselves and then when we wanted to take a shower in the morning we found the sewage had backed up again so we were unable to take a bath or shower - the manager assured us that they would reverse the charges on the credit card - now 4 days later - he refuses to do anything

Very good place

Great place to stay the staff are fantastic the continental breakfast was a bonus but if you have any disabilities do not I repeat do not book the king suite as you have a very narrow staircase to climb. The location is close to downtown you can walk to everything all the fine restaurants and theaters and meet all the friendly people

Not an impressive place to stay in Stratford

Lovely old inn but we have suggestions to improve service. Although breakfast is not included, we would suggest providing breakfast items that do not require cooking / heating. We have stayed at a BnB in Saugatuck that has cold items for breakfast which is perfectly okay. Such a beautiful dining room left to collect dust. Soft / plush carpeting on the staircase is an invitation for disaster for those of us who have issues with climbing stairs. Returning after dark was scary as there was no outside lighting. We noticed the post light was on during the day but turned off after dark. Using the TV remote control was challenging; it lacked volume control and made it difficult to select channels. Overall we felt there was a lack of attention to detail by the management and a satisfaction by management just to get by with minimal effort.

Inn in Stratford

The beds are so comfy and the location is perfect for walking to theatre / restaurants / shopping. The Inn is quiet, and relaxing with great outdoor spaces. Marley is the best greeter ever and the host (Tim) is welcoming and helpful.

Awesome!!

Great place to stay; Tim and Marley the Dog are the perfect hosts. Thank you so much for everything. Very clean and comfy, loved the theme of each room so appropriate for Stratford. See you next year :)

Lovely Historic House... But.

Pros: Good location. We actually walked everywhere, although the Festival Theater is a bit of a trek, so probably not for everyone. Lovely historic house. Adequate on site parking. Very safe area. Cons: We stayed in the Anael room on the 3rd floor. There were a lot of steep stairs, which were not a problem for us, but may be for some. The room was not clean. There were impressive cobwebs in the corners of the bathroom that must have accumulated over months. The bedspread was stained. One of the twin beds was so slanted (poor mattress) that you risked falling out of bed in the night. There was barely tepid water in the shower both mornings (at both 10:00 am and 7:30 am the next day) when we were there. Tim was not feeling well and met us with a mask (highly appreciated) when we arrived. We did not see him other than that, and a sign said to leave the keys upon checkout. We really wanted to love this place, but will stay elsewhere next year.

Perfect place for a large group!

I've stayed at the Stone Maiden Inn quite a few times. The rooms have their own bathroom which makes this a wonderful place to stay with a large group of people. The Inn is always clean and very cozy.

Amazing Stay

I loved my stay at the inn! The owner Tim is a great host and very accommodating! The rooms are so special and unique. Walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. Will definitely be returning!

Amazing

Amazing locally owned Inn, clean rooms, great water pressure and temperature, 10 / 10 would recommend. Old style interior made me feel like I was in a movie and styled to perfection. Cute gaurd dog named Marley makes you feel at home. Best place in town.

Couples Delight

Perfect couples location. Free parking. 10 min walk to Avon Theatre. 15 min walk to new Paterson Theatre. 25 min walk to Festival Theatre. 8 min walk to downtown shops and eateries. Like many b & b's following vivid, breakfast is not available. Coffee and hot water is available on site. Hint: Walk 5 minutes to the local coffee shops or bring a portable cold box. Say hello to Marley the resident lab. Stayed for 3 nights. Enjoy.

Not Returning

The room was very small and the bathroom was tiny. The room was not cleaned very well and Wifi only worked in the hallway not in our room. Not having a prepared breakfast was a big disappointment. We will not be returning.

Quiet enjoyable stay

Having stayed at a number of Inns in Stratford The Stone Maiden was no surprise. An old converted house with the quirkiness we come to expect from such. If you are looking for shiny new floors, pristine walls, central air then go to the Bruce down the road (and expect to pay 5 times as much). The room we chose, the Princess Diana, was not large, but met our needs as we were at the theatre or exploring the town most of the time. The bed was firm and gave us a couple of excellent nights sleep (what more can you ask for). The location of the Inn is excellent as it is a short walk to the center of town and easy to get to the Studio and Avon theatres. One issue for us was the fact that WIFI was not available during our stay. If this is something other than a temporary issue it would factor into future decisions about booking a return visit. Breakfast was not provided as we had come to expect based on the description when we booked, however, we went to Joe's Diner a short walk away and had a great meal. One small suggestion for the owners is for them to provide some form of drinking glasses in the room. We enjoy a glass of wine when we are away and the small 2 oz paper cups in the room just don't cut it. Throw away paper / plastic cups are OK.

Believe the poor reviews about this hotel

When I booked this stay several months ago, I read the Tripadvisor reviews and was eager to stay here. What a mistake. The photos on its website are very misleading in terms of the size of the rooms and the patio. But that I could be ok with. I am not okay with paying $273.00 / night for a room that needs dusting, wallpaper peeling off the wall, wires dangling from the TV mounted on the wall, stained duvet cover, and a bathroom that was NOT cleaned after the previous set of guests. We left as early as possible the next morning and did not stay for our second night. Fortunately we found another hotel in Stratford that was able to accommodate us. The owner has some serious work to do about the upkeep and maintenance of his hotel.

First and last time staying here

Very rigid check in times meant I missed a post show chat. No breakfast. No wifi or telephone number. I had a bat in my room and as no one there outside of check in times I had to remove bat from room myself. Unsatisfactory set up for tea / coffee. Will never return.

A Lovely Weekend Getaway

Tim, our host was very personable, and I fell in love with his dog, Marley. Tea and coffee and a guest frig were always accessible. We played pool at their pool / snooker table. They had set up Muskoka Chairs to sit outside, and the Inn was conveniently located very close to downtown Stratford.

Unable to sleep due to strong odour in bed and had to leave at 3 am, no refund

We booked the Stone Maiden Inn after seeing the great reviews online. We had planned to celebrate our 35th anniversary and attend some Stratford plays. We have stayed at the Bruce and the Best Western hotels, prior years, in Stratford and always found both to be excellent. We thought we'd try something different this year. We arrived at 1 PM, were told the room was ready. The Romeo and Juliet room visually appeared nice although dated. We dropped off our luggage to go a 2 PM show and came back at 11:30 PM. When we took the bedspread off the bed we noticed a strong, pervasive and almost overpowering scent on the blankets and pillows. Despite this we tried to sleep in the bed. At three am we decided we had to leave because the smell was intense and overpowering, we couldn't sleep and we both felt ill from it. We left a message when we arrived back in Toronto at 5 am and then called later to speak to the owner (Tim). We explained why we left and said we would like to be reimbursed. The reply abrupt and rude, " there is no smell, I won't refund any of your money and you can take legal action ", then hung up. Having stayed in many hotels and B & B's over the years we never experienced such unprofessional customer service. The adage " buyer beware " is very applicable, especially for non-refundable accommodations.

Very Disappointing

We booked the Stone Maiden Inn in the spring based on the reviews of great service and wonderful breakfasts. Three days prior to our arrival I attempted to contact the inn with a question about parking. I left a message but was never contacted with an answer. Upon check in I asked what time breakfast was served and was told, " We don't do that anymore. " No offer of a partial refund was offered. We decided to take advantage of the complimentary tea and coffee offered but there was no hot water or pods for the coffee maker, no milk… We attempted to watch the television in the room but could only access 1 news channel after trying all available inputs and remotes. No written instructions were provided and there was no one on site to provide any kind of assistance. The daily reception advertised was not available, either. At this point we decided to leave and head home.

2023-07-26 18:05:50

Disappointing stay

We were most disappointed in the change from B & B to Inn. The host acknowledged the change but did not offer anything to make up for the loss of breakfast. Convenient location but room needed updating. The ceiling fan was unusable, the ceiling was stained and the bed was tiny and noisy. Next to train track and loud automated carwash.

2023-07-15 22:24:56

Would not return or recommend

While the location is great for the Avon theatre and downtown that is the only redeeming quality. The Inn is in disrepair, no breakfast although pics and post refer to the stay as a bed and breakfast. Very old and dated furniture and not very clean. Nothing redeeming in the service from the host, Tim and WAY overpriced. The photos on the website are not true to form. I am kicking myself for not doing more investigating. Next time I will stay at the Best Western. I would not return at any price.

Good location, nice stay

This place has a good location with a walking distance to downtown of Stratford, restaurants, theaters. We were lucky, we didn't have a thunderstorm as had been predicted, and air quality has been much better in Canada than in states. The Maiden Inn is pretty basic and clean, has a lot of rooms, no breakfast, but it has a fridge, hot teas, coffee for guests. Overall, it was a nice stay!

2023-07-04 08:07:12

Charming and Practical

The Old Maiden Inn was built in 1873 making our visit part of its 150th year. It is an historic building with beautiful sitting rooms and sitting areas (inside and outside) and an upscale billiards room. We stayed in the Princess Diana room which was steeped in charm and character. It was also clean and possessed an ornate and comfortable bed. The owner couldn't have been more kind or helpful. In addition, the location of the inn is ideal. Over the years we have stayed in many wonderful Stratford hotels; this was our favourite.

Would Not Return

Good location to restaurants. Needs some housekeeping- garbage in common areas, dead flowers in hall, furniture dusty, poop on lawn, outdoor furniture broken and / or dirty. Breakfast room (tea and coffee) locked for most of day. Host unavailable.

2023-06-16 15:27:45

Musty and dusty

A musty smell permeates this dark, gloomy home; there is a lack of cleaning and care. Bathroom floor was dirty, fan hanging directly over the bed was dusty and had a frayed cord. $300 for a stay of less than 20 hours with no breakfast provided is not warranted. There was no hospitality; we saw the owner for less than 5 minutes. The overall sense is one of deterioration. The bed was comfortable. Wouldn't return at any price.

Terrible stay at this INN. Dirty, dusty, unsafe

Stayed in the violet room June 10, 2023. Ceiling fan, table lamps, all surfaces covered in dust. I am not a germaphobe; but this was really poor Obviously had not been cleaned in some time. Visible water damage to ceiling above bed and on the wall beside the bed. Electrical outlet beside bed was old and plugs would not stay in. Felt that was a fire hazard. Had to " Mcgiver " our luggage under the outlet with the tv remotes to get the plugs to stay in. There is an old, dirty window air conditioner above the bed. I turned it on and it was quite noisy but it worked. The front cover vibrated off and hit me in the face so that was it for the air conditioner. The filter on the air conditioner was of course in poor, dirty shape. The horizontal blind in the room was yellowed with age and dirty as well. There was a stain in front of the toilet_- who knows what that is. The mattress on the bed was sunken in the middle. Hard to explain but we both were pushed into the middle. Clearly this mattress had seen better days. I went looking for the owner in the morning to no avail. Knocked on the employees only door a number of times_ crickets. I left and called and left a message explaining my concerns and displeasure. Just to top it all off when we went to the car which was parked on the grass in the overflow parking area beside the inn it was covered in dog droppings everywhere. I'm a dog lover and owner but come on! Owner called and left a message that he got my message. That was it. I called back _ answering machine again and asked for him to call me again. Never heard from him. I know this is a very poor review but our room was just terrible at any price and ridiculous for the price we paid. I

More a B than a B & B for now

One of the great pleasures of a trip to Stratford is staying at a great B & B, the guests conversing over the traditional overloaded breakfast about what they've seen and their plans for the day. I stayed at Stone Maiden years ago and rebooked anticipating something similar, but received an email post-booking saying that due to problems recruiting staff post-covid they are no longer serving breakfast at all. This wasn't stated on the website, though there were reviews mentioning the great breakfasts. I didn't have time to search for another place by that point so went anyway, but in retrospect I should have made time. The proprietor is friendly and the location is great, but the upkeep seems to be overtaxing their resources somewhat. I would also not recommend the topmost room because although it does have skylights, it has virtually no windows with a view and so can be somewhat cavelike. One day the Stone Maiden will get staff and return to its former state, but it's not there currently. I would stay elsewhere until then.

Beautiful property but service needs improvement

We stayed for a birthday weekend. We were told due to manpower issues there would be no breakfast about 1 week prior to our stay and were welcome to cancel without penalty but realistically there are few options during a busy opening weekend at Stratford. I would have appreciated a bit of a discount if breakfast was not available. We also returned around 5:30 pm to our room to find that it had not been serviced. When my husband inquired about this he was told that they don't change towels despite a sign in the room saying if you want towels changed leave them on the floor or in the tub. We were handed towels and the old towels were taken away only after our inquiry. The inn is a beautiful property and our room was lovely. With the appropriate service and a decent breakfast we would have returned but now will look into different places for our next visit to Stratford.

Beautiful Victorian Home

A beautiful victorian home (1873). Lovely furnishings throughout. Our room had a two person jacquzzi tub, nice addition. There is some green space there, if you decide you want to spend some time outside. Just a little disappointed there is no breakfast provided, just tea / coffee. We did know that ahead of time. All in all a great stay. Sam

Not what it used to be

Such a disappointment. We stayed here a few years ago, and it was lovely. We had looked forward to returning but were disappointed. The breakfast was subpar for a B & B experience -- in fact, we went out for breakfast on our second day because of that. What used to be shabby chic is now just shabby -- loose doorknobs, loose bathtub taps that didn't work (we were told to just " jiggle it "), lukewarm showers, rusty water coming out of the taps, dirty pillows that needed to be replaced, and apparently no one has mopped or vacuumed under the beds in quite a while. A used teapot at the coffee / tea station that sat uncleaned during our entire stay, no milk or tea and the coffee / tea station. This property is beautiful and has so much potential, and we have seen it be so much better than what it is now. The rooms are lovely, and the house itself is beautiful. I well understand that staffing is an issue for many places these days, but perhaps it would be best not to book every room in the inn if you can't keep up standards.

A Dramatic Disappointment

Two of our group members had previously stayed at The Stone Maiden Inn with excellent feedback. In joining them on this trip, our expectations were high. But we were greatly disappointed. An immediate excuse of being short staffed on our arrival, a bland and somewhat burnt breakfast, teas and beverages were limited and no milk available for morning coffee. And breakfast was served late - we were not eligible to eat until 10 AM. One of the reasons one goes to a B & B is for the breakfast - 1 piece of bacon, no choice of Canadian Bacon as a lower calorie alternative, a pre warmed quiche with one slice of toast. No jams or preserves were brought - we had to ask and then only a small dish for 6 people was brought. It seems that the interest in serving the guests is gone. On our second morning, we left early to have breakfast elsewhere. So, for us it was a Bed… no second " B ". When my partner dropped something on the floor in our room, it rolled under the bed. I got down to floor level to reach under the bed. There was a mask under the bed and lots of dust. It was clear that the cleaning was being done at a very cursory level. Oh, and I forgot to mention that our credit card charge was processed for the entire stay before we arrived at the Inn. This, I assume, makes it difficult to leave prior to the end of one's stay. Which was something we seriously considered. A sorry and tired disappointment. We will not be returning. A hotel would have been less expensive, had a better location and better breakfast options.

2022-10-20 11:46:49

Disappointing for the price

Great location but it's the little things that make a place special, particularly if you are paying a higher rate. We stayed in the Abigale room and the base of the bedside lamp was covered in dust. In the bathroom there was a shower and conditioner - different drug store brands and only a small amount left in each. It made you felt you were in someone's personal bathroom. The rolled up anti-slip mat was ripped and the grout quite dirty. Only one type of tea on offer on the second floor (again, it's the little things - how hard is it to have some herbal teas as a choice as well?) and only a few coffee pods - despite the owner saying repeatedly that the inn was fully booked. Why weren't things stocked up? it felt more like it was just a business, vs an inn that is run with pride and with a focus on the guest experience. For the price, disappointing.

2022-10-18 17:52:22

Fading grandeur

The Inn has seen better days, and the breakfast was very ordinary and underwhelming for the price. But if you do go, do NOT book with Expedia. They charged us $25 per night more than the Inn charges. Always book directly if you can.

2022-09-13 07:28:04

Charming B and B

We are always happy to stay at the Stone Maiden Inn, so centrally located that we are able to walk to all the theatres and restaurants in Stratford. We always enjoy the home cooked, well prepared breakfasts, the old charm charm of the place and the kindness of the family who run it.

Friendly B & B in Stratford

Service was excellent. From the intro at check-in to a delicious breakfast. A great B & B An older building but well kept and clean Quiet neighborhood. Location was fantastic. Walkable to the city centre and all shops and restaurants in 5-10 minutes. Great gluten free breakfast options. We would visit again.

Wonderful stay during Stratford Festival

My friends and I stayed at the Stone Maiden Infer 4 nights last week during the Stratford Festival. Tim is such a great host - made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. We very much enjoyed the delicious breakfasts each morning. And the location of the Inn was convenient for us to walk into the heart of Stratford and also to walk to the theaters for the performances each day / night. My bed in the Princess Diana room was very comfortable as well. We definitely plan on staying at the Stone Maiden Inn again next year!

2022-08-12 20:49:01

A Bad Experience

Check in at 4:00, tiny room, 3rd floor walkup, 2 small beds with old mattress slanting toward floor, mini-TV at ceiling in corner w / 1 station, no hot water in shower, air con noisy, clock radio broken, no table to write, 1 chair, 1 hanger, no coffee maker, front door lock problem. Better than camping out..

Great stay

I took my daughter for a birthday getaway to see Chicago, shop, dine and explore Stratford. We both enjoy B & Bs so I chose the stone maiden based on location and reviews. I was not disappointed. We stayed in a room on the 3rd floor, the Harahel. It was a spacious room with 2 very comfortable beds, one a double / queen with a pretty lace canopy. The other was a single but still very comfortable. In spite of the heatwave, the temperature was cool thanks to our host Tim turning the ac on before our arrival. There is plentiful parking. We arrived early for a matinee performance but we were welcome to leave our car and store our luggage until check in time at 4. Location is perfect on a quiet treed street within easy walking distance to the shops, restaurants and river walks. It was about a 25 minute walk to the festival theatre which we enjoyed. There is a station for tea, water and coffee available anytime. Breakfast was delicious. Our choices were A fabulous fruit topped breakfast cake which I would have eaten every single day followed by perfectly cooked eggs Benny. Our server, Marilyn, was sweet and efficient. I read some reviews that said " tired ". I disagree, this beautiful house is around 150+ years old. I found the décor to be eclectic, charming and appropriate. I have no love of shiny stainless steel, walls of mirrors or glass balconies. I will definitely stay here again on my next Stratford visit. Thanks, Tim. Peta Patel & Traci.

Little To Be Desired

We pick B & B's for their breakfasts, otherwise we'd just stay at an AirBnB. So you can imagine our disappointment to find a very cold breakfast (waffles so cold the butter sat on top), no fresh milk for tea (they claimed it was fresh but the nose knows sour), and cobwebs in the bedroom. When I think of what we paid for our room for a lukewarm experience, I wish we had read more reviews. Some do confirm our experience so ours was not isolated. There are nicer Inns with delightful tea cups and teapots; this place is self-serve coffee and tea in ordinary mugs and the price does not reflect that.

Beautiful house to stay in

Our trip was end of the April 2022, middle of the week. Slow season. The house is beautifully furnished. Nice ambience. We stayed in Princes Diana room. Loved it. Shower worked just perfect. Water was hot and no problem with plumbing or anything. Breakfast was tasty and served one hour earlier per our request. We were also allowed to leave the car at the hotel after checking out till it was our time to leave the town.

Stratford Festival 2021

This was our first travel outing since the onset of COVID, and it was idyllic. The stay was relaxing, the breakfast and coffee superb, and location for walking to plays and shops very convenient. We will be repeat customers!

Relaxing Headquarters for a Stratford Stay

Beautiful old mansion filled with history and charm. Our room - Annabelle - was on the second floor. It had one queen bed and a sitting area, and a large bathroom with a claw foot tub / shower, and antique toilet. It was perfect for us. Quiet 15 minute walk to downtown. Nice sitting area by the garden for a drink and a book. Tim met us outside, accompanied by his beautiful, well behaved dog Marley. They were both gracious hosts. Tim's breakfasts were a delicious way to get the day started. He was always available to answer questions or chat, but was not intrusive and respected our privacy as we respected his. If we have the opportunity to visit Stratford again, we will definitely stay at the Stone Maiden Inn.

Escape the city for R & R

My friend and I we're looking for a nice place to get out of the city for a few days. The Stone Maiden Inn is amazingly located within Stratford, Very walkable. Tim was so helpful and kind. The room was adorable and spacious. Air Conditioning and Smart TV were a bonus. The house is beautiful and by the time you leave you wish you lived there. 10 / 10 would recommend.

OUR CANADIAN HOME AWAY FROM HOME

This is how we feel when we stay here. We come to Stratford at least twice a year and this is the only place we would consider staying. Tim is an amazing host. Sirka always amazes us at breakfast with her culinary wizardry. They serve Balzac's coffee! The rooms are always clean and comfortable. It's just off the beaten path, but well within walking distance to downtown theaters, shopping and dining. Stay here at our home away from home next time you are visiting Stratford.

Nice enough, but can be noisy if you have a first floor room

Any hotel, inn, or other accommodation away from home _ be it a roadside motel, a luxury 4 star hotel, or a small town bed and breakfast is selling one thing: a good night's rest. In the case of a B & B, which usually charges premium hotel rates, you are also paying for a certain experience: a more intimate setting, a home cooked breakfast, perhaps the opportunity to meet new people or engage in conversation with the inn keeper. The Stone Maiden Inn is fairly typical in those respects... and normally would not have stood out in a manner that inspired either a glowingly positive or a scathingly negative review. The breakfasts were delightful, and the dining room was lovely. Our host Tim seemed like a genuinely nice person who cared about the comfort of the guests. The bed was adequately comfortable, and the pillows (I'm an acknowledged pillow snob) were great. But the lack of any ability to control the heat meant that we had the open the window to counter the blast from the old fashioned steam radiators, which lead to a dry, not particularly sleep-friendly environment. All that could easily be chalked up to " quaint ", and under normal circumstances it wouldn't even warrant a mention. But what inspired this middling review was one thing only: one of the nights we stayed here, they threw a thanksgiving dinner for _ I assume _ family and friends. No issues with that... it's thanksgiving, and that's what people do. However, this gathering turned into a rather loud gathering with people conversing in the area outside our room, playing music, yelling back and forth, and generally being rather boisterous. Eventually, after tolerating this for hours (I really didn't start to get irritated until it kept going past 10pm), I got up at 11:20pm and told one of the guests to quiet down, and to turn off the music which was playing in the kitchen area which was right next to our room. To their credit, they immediately stopped, and things settled down from there… but as a guest, it's not something that I should have had to deal with… nor is it something I've ever had to deal with at any other B & B over the past several decades. My advice for other travellers -- if you value peace and quiet, make sure to ask for a room that is not on the first floor, as things can get loud.

Charming Inn with a GREAT Location!

Light and spacious room in a beautiful house with lovely antiques and furnishings. Tim, the owner, was friendly, accommodating, and knowledgable about Stratford. The location is perfect for a walking tour of the town (and for the Avon Theatre). The breakfast of blueberry buttermilk pancakes couldn't be better! We highly recommend The Stone Maiden Inn and will definitely look forward to a return visit!

To Bed or Not to Bed.

This is a great home base for visiting Stratford and attending the Shakespearean festival. The inn is centrally located, walking distance to the Avon Theatre and downtown. The building is a grand structure with classy decors and lots of atmosphere. Plenty of parking too. The hosts are very friendly, helpful and efficient. Breakfast is wonderful, with a variety of tasty, fresh options like frittata, waffles, muffins, etc. Our room was very comfortable and clean (but not huge). No complaints at all. We would come back, for sure!

Lovely B & B

Stone Maiden Inn is a lovely Century home, located minutes from central Stratford, but on a quiet street. The host was very welcoming, and the rooms were lovely. And breakfast -- a mini baked apple as an amuse-bouche! Then a choice of three main breakfast offerings. Highly recommend

Wonderful B & B

We stayed for the second time and found this B & B to be wonderful. Our host, Tim, could not have been nicer and more helpful. The rooms are very comfortable. The breakfasts are superb... can't be beat! Organic and home made dishes and treats. Coffee and tea available 24 / 7. Rooms are very quiet. Absolutely great B & B! Highest recommendation.

What's not to like

A great old Victorian house with creaky stairs and hidden room. Even though my taste buds are not awake in the morning the breakfasts are fabulous and home cooked everything. Many of the rooms are small with the bed taking up most of the floor space but there are wonderful indoor and outdoor public spaces. Staying here is a wonderful treat.

Great place to stay in Stratford

My daughter and I stayed at the Stone Maiden when attending a play in Stratford. Tim was an excellent host and gave great advice on dining options, directions, etc. He even gave us a room upgrade without additional charge. The Inn was very inviting -- enclosed porch, billiard room, outside seating. Delicious breakfast too! Close proximity to all venues and downtown Stratford. Highly recommend staying there if you are looking for a quiet B & B in Stratford. Thanks Tim!

Everything You're Looking For!

We were in Stratford for a wedding and loved everything about our stay at the Stone Maiden. Tim was gracious and accommodating. Our room was comfortable and pleasantly appointed. Breakfast was served in a lovely dining room and was delicious. We'll be back 🌟

Five Stars... Yes.

Five Stars! This is not given frivolously. I have stayed at 5 Star places in New York and one must realize that the rating is related to context. For Stratford, Ontario - the Stone Maiden Inn indeed earns this rating... if what you looking for is the charming old home elegance coupled with the privacy of a commercial inn. The innkeeper, Tim, is knowledgeable, respectful and fun to talk to. The amenities are literally unique. Each room has a name and theme. No two are alike. The parlour and billiard room are a nice retreat when you return from exploring the town or seeing a show. The breakfasts are served by an accomplished chef (Cirka) and again.. no two seatings are the same. It is a cascade of new and novel experiences. So for those who desire a unique experience and don't mind stepping back into a more charming time period choose the Stone Maiden - the Inn that creates a desire for regular visits...

Charmingly delicious

From our (four ladies) greeting as guests to our farewell as friends we were delighted with our stay at the Stone Maiden Inn. Our hosts and staff were wonderful. The rooms were well appointed with comfy beds and lovely linens. Robes supplied were a lovely touch. The breakfast area was beautiful and beautifully set. Breakfast choices were bountiful and absolutely delicious. After full days we enjoyed the conversation area in the breakfast room to chat and have a glass of wine. The sunroom also provided a relaxed area for reading or chatting. A fridge on the second floor was a welcome surprise. So many lovely touches and exploring all the nooks of the mansion was a fun adventure. We were so well looked after. Tim is gracious, charming and very attentive, providing any help or info that was asked of him. Lots of fun too!

Overrated!

We booked a deluxe double room at the Stone Maiden Inn. I really failed to see what was deluxe about. The tired furniture? The cramped quarters? The tiny closet? The unattractive carpet? I also did not find that the breakfast was anything special. I would say that it was just adequate. I don't know where this property gets its rave reviews from. It certainly is not good value for money!

Brief stay ar a lovely historic home and welcoming host

Though my friend and I only stayed for one night and had to leave fairly early in the morning it was a very pleasant experience. Room on the third floor could a been a problem if we had had more than just an overnight bag. Comfortable beds and minimal traffic noise made for a good sleep. Certainly appreciated being served an early breakfast and our host arranging a taxi before catching the train. Would definitely recommend the Stone Maiden as an excellent place to stay in Stratford as it is within easy walking distance of all the theatres.

" Bats in the Belfry "

As a former employee of Hilton, I know something about hospitality. However, due to the rude & crass actions that we suffered at the hands of the owner TIM, I am obliged to post this & warn others. In a nutshell A) the room B) the bats C) the rip-off (swindle). A) tiny Brakiel " guest-room " was TERRIBLE. Not fit to rent out to any couple. TIM simply said, " sorry if it's not what it seems ", smirked, shrugged, walked off. Old carpet was dirty, room was dusty, no room for a laptop, no closet space, etc. B) around 4pm, returning from a walk, my wife was reading in a common area, when some strange noises occurred. 2 BATS (yes, bats) came flying out of a ceiling hole, one so close to her that freaked her out for the next 48 hrs. TIM puts on some white gloves, catches them & wryly says, " good thing the guests did not see that ". What is my wife? A sub-guest? It angers me so, just writing this. C) we decide we had enough, never unpacked and leave the hotel around 5pm, never having stayed a night. We called TIM and what ensued was arguments about whether we have the right to a REFUND or not. He screamed at both my wife & I on the phone, saying that " we get whet we paid for " ; " he is getting good $ for the other rooms at both his properties ", and that he " would NOT refund us ". And he has NOT. Simply took our money. Conclusion:TIM is either 1) incredibly greedy, or 2) discriminatory against us, or 3) incompetent in Hospitality etiquette. And we traveled 2000 miles to be treated like this?

A Bit Disappointed

We had high hopes for this establishment. In the end, we didn't find it a good value for the money we spent. It is a bit tired and worn. The breakfast selections were good, and the host was friendly and accommodating, but the room decor and amenities fell short of our expectations. We would not return.

Stone Maiden Inn in Stratford, Ontario

We completely enjoyed our stay at the Stone Maiden Inn. This beautiful old home has been beautifully restored as a bed and breakfast. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful regarding restaurant advice etc. The breakfast was really wonderful, imaginative and fresh The rooms that we saw and the one that we had were just ok, quite plain, not at all luxurious, but clean. It is convenient to the town and theatres. We would return. John and Elizabeth, Cleveland, Ohio

Beautiful Retreat

Submitted by Barbara The Abigail room at the Stone Angel Inn provided a restful and comfortable night after attending a performance at the Stratford Festival. The breakfast was delicious. We had an oatmeal brûlée with fresh fruit. The next course was a vegetable pancake with poached egg and hollandaise sauce and fresh asparagus and of course delicious coffee. Pat greeted us warmly when we arrived. He answered our questions and took the time to converse with us. We highly recommend the Stone Angel Inn.

Beautiful and quaint

My daughter and I loved this beautiful old inn. We were met at the door by the owner, Tim, who helped us with our bags up three flights of stairs while giving us a bit of the history of the place as well as showing us the location of the fridge and tea and coffee. The inn also provided cookies and other goodies by the front door. Our room was very clean, the beds were firm and comfortable, the bathroom had hot water, and the inn was very quiet. Hanging up in the closet were bathrobes and on the bed were small chocolates. The breakfast was excellent and the staff cater to those with special diets. There's ample parking and It's an easy walk to downtown and the theatres, if you're taking in a play. Give yourself a treat and book a room there. You won't be disappointed.

2015-07-26 14:02:50

If you want to sleep, don't stay here.

My family and I went to this place last summer. The staff were friendly, and polite. The food was amazing. I loved that they had a variety of selection and were able to give offers to people with allergies, etc. The inn itself is very clean and a beautiful place. However the beds are as hard as rocks, and the showers are a little gross. Since it's an old building they have to have A. C units in the windows, so this can be very loud stay, since they are litterily right beside train tracks. My mom wrote a review and commented about the beds and they replied that they " only use the best beds available ". Well when 4 people of different heights and sizes get no sleep in 3 days... might be time for new beds.

2014-08-28 15:40:48

I came back.

and I always will. The Stone Maiden Inn is so quiet, peaceful & clean. Breakfast was a delight. The owners treat you like family, are helpful and go out of their way to ensure your comfort. Looking forward to another visit..... soon

OUR RECENT GETAWAY

We recently treated to a 2 night stay at the Stone Maiden as a gift from our son & daughter-in-law. Upon arrival, we were met by Trish and given a lovely tour of the Inn and all the facilities available to us. Having never been to Stratford before, we asked Trish for some suggestions for dinner. She was very helpful in finding a restaurant that was open on Monday evening (something we had not though about) and recommended a great place. We stayed in the Romeo & Juliet room and found it to be very charming. After a long day of much walking and shopping, the soaker tub was heavenly! Chef Erin's breakfast were delicious - original ideas, garden fresh ingredients and made to perfection. What a treat to have so many choices for breakfast both in seating time and the food choices. Sitting outside on the patio to have another cup of their wonderful coffee was so relaxing and was where we planned our first day. Our room was on the " railway track " side and although we were told the train did pass through, we never once heard it. Our hosts, Pat and Trish, made us feel very welcome. You can feel the pride they take in their property whenever you talk to them. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to return one day.

Exquisite

I will not be looking for any other accommodation for my future visits to Stratford. I found the Stone Maiden Inn link through the Stratford Festival web page and knew instantly my search had ended at the very first place I looked at. Very informative descriptions right down to the number of stairs to the room I chose. So quiet and peaceful, you wouldn't know you were in the heart of the city. The hospitality goes above and beyond. My only dilemma is, which room to choose next !

Best Stay in Stratford!

Thanks to a fantastic Travel Zoo deal, my best friend and I were introduced to this beautiful and charming Inn for one night on April 5th. I had decided to upgrade us to the Penthouse - The Secret Garden room. It was a beautiful, spacious and quiet room. However, this room is not suitable for anyone who has problems with going up stairs since both staircases in the room were narrow. I have stayed in Stratford before but this was my BEST experience to date. I loved the excellent service I received from the telephone reservation with Pat, to the welcome and delightful tour by Trish to the excellent breakfast service by Lindsey and Chef Erin. It was very hard to leave the Inn, believe me! The attention to detail was INCREDIBLE!! There is nothing I would have changed and I am looking forward to returning to the Inn over and over again. Check it out, you will not regret it! Thank you for everything Pat, Trish, Lindsey and Chef Erin. You truly have helped to make this girls' weekend a most relaxing and " out of this world one " ! With gratitude, Stephanie and Dorothy

2016-05-16 09:51:46

tired and lonely

I did not enjoy this accommodation. The owners and staff were not apparent. I was told I would be alone for the night. I suggest if you find yourself in this position a) don't check in b) call bylaw - absentees owners are not allowed according to Stratford bylaw. Best of luck to you. The building could use some love and attention. The front " boot room " looks about to fall off - and could use a clean coat of paint. (Owners dog is allowed in the hotel - allergic guests should avoid this one)

No Drama here!

This was our 2nd stay (my wife's 3rd) at Stone Maiden Inn- and we love it. Pat the owner gets to know you like old friends, and you really do feel at home. Location is terrific - we walked everywhere in Stratford, including to lunch and dinner and to the theaters, leaving our car in the parking lot at the Inn. Breakfasts make you want to go to bed earlier - nothing but the best. We love it there and will plan on continuing our now annual trek to Stratford, staying ONLY at STone Maiden.

Wonderful spot to stay

The Stone Maiden Inn is a lovely place to stay, close to everything and charming. Breakfast was also wonderful! It's a great place to stay if you prefer to walk to everything as it is close to main street and to two of the theatres.

2016-07-19 09:17:02

Seen Better Days!

Innkeeper Tim was very cordial and informative. Breakfasts always had 4 choices which is remarkable and served in a pleasant sunny room. The inn was well situated and convenient to town. The rating should be " good " (not an option) which comes from the value for the amenities and appearance of the place versus the cost of $250 / night (in a small town!). One could not help noticing wall paper and bathroom tile bubbling up / misaligned), a frayed pull cord, an electrical outlet not working, lack of body lotion as a toiletry amenity, a missing pull back hardware for the drapes, misaligned bathroom sink with mirror and lights, window frames needing painting / reglazing, poor stenciling on the walls and doors, just little things, but noticeable. It's the details that drive patrons to stay at BandBs rather than conventional hotels. Thank you.

Quiet Night

We spent a pleasant evening and restful night at Stone Maiden Inn. The common areas and guest rooms are very comfortable although worn. The beds were comfortable but the lounge chairs in the room need to be replaced, seriously. The availability of coffee and tea, at any hour, was appreciated. The breakfast was very tasty and beautifully presented.

2015-06-30 17:52:48

Satisfying and elegant

We were greeted with first rate personal service in the reception area, the immaculate Victorian front hall which sets the tone for the house. We were shown how to use the coffee and tea makers and then to our room. Ours was on the ground level and convenient to everything in the house. It was as spotless and elegant as the rest of the house with comfortable beds. I immediately returned to the dining room, which would easily seat 20 guests, to make a tea and wandered through the lobby. The house was built in 1873 and became the historic Sander's Hotel. The old hotel guest register is on display in the lobby. I settled in the side garden gazebo, an entirely modern canvas affair but nicely furnished with padded rattan furniture, to enjoy my tea and to read. We attended a great rendition of The Sound of Music at the Festival Theatre. After the purchase in two elegant whisky glasses in the very touristy down town, and a single malt to sip on before bed. We were treated to an excellent breakfast of, apple strudel, quiche, & choice of juice for us, but this changes daily, all accompanied by a very rousing fire alarm which I suspect was triggered by the strudel. We loved every minute of it, even the alarm, and would return again.

2010-08-24 21:46:52

very disappointing for the price

I have been visiting Stratford for many years and have almost always been very pleased with the B & B's we have stayed in - until now. We had very little to choose from and so spent more than we usually do - and expected luxury. The house was charming, and the owner was very nice and accommodating - even allowed us to check in early. However, the room was small and cramped as was the bathroom. There was also an odour of rotting wood in the room. The house is literally next to the railway track and we did hear the train at night. Breakfast was pleasant and adequate, but by no means generous. I would definitely NOT say it was good value for the money

2015-08-15 12:34:59

Lovely 19th century dwelling but.

We found the room pleasant (if crowded) and everything quite clean. We would have appreciated a grab bar in the tub and a non-skid mat (since it was slippery). It would have been nice to have the liquid soap there rather than the too tiny bit of soap provided. The Breakfast room and reception room were attractive We did not like choosing our breakfast the day before (for obvious reasons). We had orange juice, two very thin slices of a zucchini bread with whipped cream (odd!) and then the yoghurt with dried fruit and nuts scattered on top with two halved strawberries for decoration. We drank the coffee provided and still felt hungry (in other places a scone or tea biscuit with butter & jam would have been provided) - so we headed downtown for an early lunch!! There are other B & Bs in Stratford we prefer.

Best Stay In Stratford

The new owners of the Stone Maiden Inn have really taken it to a new level. We had the most enjoyable, convenient, delicious, and hospitable stay ever. The rooms are so lovely and in top-notch condition. So clean and welcoming. Our breakfast was out of this world. As a Nutritionist I'm usually disappointed and bring some of my own snacks to ensure I have all my nutrients, but this breakfast was 100% Nutritinist AND foodie approved. Very fresh and well made. Great portions too. We actually skipped lunch because we were so satisfied from breakfast and had more time to explore. Location is perfect, just a short and beautiful 5-minute walk to downtown. Everything was perfect and to top it off Tim, his wife, and children made us feel so comfortable and at-home. Seriously cannot wait to go back. Highly recommended for your trip to Stratford. I honestly wouldn't bother with any other place. :)

My wife and I were on a quick anniversary getaway to Stratford for some theater, good food and quiet time together

Although far too short a stay, our anniversary trip to Stratford was made very special by the owners of the Stone Maiden Inn. For one, quick telephone responses to inquiries and changes to itinerary - both over the phone and via e-mail. Second, the room was clean, quaint, quite and lovely. Third, the breakfast was exquisite, with a wonderful array of coffees, teas, juices, and a superbly prepared delicious entree. Moreover, coffee and tea were readily available throughout the day. Finally, as we had to leave very early, so the owner made sure we had an offering of scones and fruit bars for our trip home. Wonderful experience, cannot praise the hospitality enough.

2016-08-26 13:14:04

VERY small room

The inn is nicely decorated and the owners very pleasant - but the room in the attic was extremely small for the price - almost $200 CD !!! Window could not be opened because of a window A / C and we wanted fresh air. The owner said she would put a screen in but it didn't happen. The TINY TV at the ceiling was laughable. They should check out what cheap TV's are available today. There is NO reception ! When we arrived we had to stroll around and ended up in the kitchen to ask how to get registered. Breakfast was disappointing - coffee was not very good and we were offered a few choices. We chose a sandwich which was small, not enough for 2 men. No one came back to ask if it was possible to as for more. We will not return.

2015-06-07 17:25:40

Just Ok

We have stayed in many b and b's in the past 11 years and this one is just OK. Pros : very comfortable bed, spacious room, courteous staff, accommodated late check out. Cons : very limited breakfast choices, they didn't accommodate my husband's lactose intolerance although I had notified them in advance, you have to boil your own water for tea, they did not respond to my 2 email requests for arranging visit to the spa, after one person showered (approx 5 minutes) there was no more hot water. Good location; main street, shopping and restaurants are within walking distance.

Beautiful Inn with Gracious Hosts

We took our Mom to Stratford to see a play - for her 96th birthday and stayed at the Stone Maiden Inn. The new hosts, Johanna and Tim as well as their entire family were wonderful always helpful and willing to give excellent advice about what to do in the area and its restaurants. The rooms are all very well decorated and well kept. We stayed in the Abigail, a bright room with a queen size bed, and the Princess Diana which, with its 4-poster bed was elegant. The inn has a very nice patio just off of the living room, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, which is available anytime you wish. Breakfasts are bountiful and excellently prepared with new choices each day. A nice touch is that a menu is given to you the day before from which you select what you would like and the time that you would like to have it ready. That way, the selections are absolutely fresh and " just out of the oven ". And.. be sure to ask for the scones - a specialty of the Inn which are the best we have had anywhere in our 30 years World of travel! The bottom line is that we had a wonderful time - Tim and Johanne as the new hosts have moved into that position beautifully.. we look forward to staying at The Stone Maiden Inn again on out next trip to Stratford.

Trying hard.

This could have been a mishap, but Tim (the new owner of the inn) tried really hard to make it right. After emailing and phoning the inn a week in advance to notify that we were going to arrive around 1 am, and agreeing to leave the front door open and have us lock it behind us upon arrival, we find ourselves at 1 am, exhausted from a long drive from Toronto... and locked out. Soon enough another couple of fellow guests of the inn joined us!!! Although they did have their keys, none of them opened the front door, so we had to phone the innkeepers... And there we all waited, waited, until a rather grumpy lady came from elsewhere to let us in. Long story short, the inn is another " victorian " inspired place, reasonably comfortable and very well located, with a yummy hot breakfast. Tim apologized sincerely, let us have a late check-out and offered us a box of lovely chocolates and insight about the local food scene. If Tim and Johanne manage to get a hold of the innkeeping role, this could be an adequate place to stay in Stratford.

A Beautiful Gem

My Partner and I wanted to take a quick getaway for a nice long weekend in Stratford On. Having only gone their on day trips for the great theatre. We were unfamiliar with the local Bed & Breakfasts. After searching the internet, I stumbled upon The Stone Maiden Inn. It looked great on line but was absolutely amazing once we got there. We were treated as if we were the only guests in the Inn. Owners Kim and Pat Walsh were the more than perfect hosts! Not once did we feel that we were staying in someone's house as I do when I have stayed at other B & B's. We will never forget the scrumptious breakfasts and beautiful walks we took around the property. The ideal location is only a five minute walk to downtown and all the theatres and restaurants. I highly recommend this Inn to all those wanting a beautiful stay for either a long weekend or just a night's stay. HK

Highly Recommended!!!

We loved our stay at the Stone Maiden Inn. This was our first visit at Stratford and we could not be happier with this place. 1. Location: Only 5 min walk to downtown. No need to take your car to the core or try to look for parking. 2. Service: The owner was very helpful and friendly and so are the stuffs. 3. Room: Clean and well maintained with historical charm combined with modern amenities like hot water and fluffy bathrobes. 4. Breakfast: Started with Fresh scones and jam and fresh fruits. Then chose Eggs Benedict among four options. I believe they change those options every day. Everything was delicious. It was our first trip but it definitely won't be our last. Very very happy with our stay.

2014-09-09 23:38:48

the only place we stay in Stratford

Traveling from California to Stratford for the Shakespeare Festival is daunting and it is always a joy to arrive at the Stonemaiden Inn as our home away from home. We have been going to Stratford for over twenty five years and have seen the Stonemaiden through three owners - these being the best. We were there the first year they began operations and have returned every year since then. Generally we spend about five nights in Stratford and are always very comfortable in the suites at the Inn. Very nice bedding and towels are in all the rooms; nice soaps and bathrooms accessories are provided as well as a refrigerator and microwave for guests use. The dining room is charming and the menu for breakfast is varied and well prepared with local, fresh ingredients. Coffee and tea service is available at all times. The owners are nicely attentive and helpful - printing maps and information as needed. Sitting areas both in the lovely front parlor or outside in a shaded yard provide nice places for conversation. The location is premier for walking to all theatres and downtown shops and restaurants.

2016-02-28 14:24:59

Will not return

I would have gave this place a zero star rating but for this one reason I will give it a star. We were the only guests in the B & B so we were allowed to choose any room. Was a good decision because the room we had reserved was two single beds pushed together (covered by a bed skirt) to create a " queen ". Besides that it was terrible service. If you stay here in any " off-peak " season be prepared that this is a bed only. They have dry cereal with no milk, Coffee with only sugar, and a few bottles of water. Be prepared to have to call the innkeepers for anything you need because they are no where to be found. For checking out / finding places to eat / questions you are on your own. There was no hand shake or a face-to-face goodbye. Don't bother ringing the " innkeepers " doorbell because they won't answer it. Spend your money and stay at a place that is a bed & BREAKFAST. A place where they will take care of you regardless if you are the only guest staying there in an " off-peak " season.

VERY WARM AND WELCOMING

First impressions really are important and the Stone Maiden Inn passes with flying colours. Our room was lovely and breakfast the next morning was exceptional. We will be returning on our next trip to Stratford. D. Macdonald Toronto

Good location.

For going to the Stratford Festival this B'n'B is all round excellent. It's a heritage house in a quiet neighbourhood, yet just a short walk from a couple of the theatres. Going to Market Square is 10 minutes walk and gives you lots of restaurant choices. Our room was a decent size, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom sizable and clean. The breakfast gave some choices and was tasty and sufficient to keep one going to lunch time. Definitely recommend.

A bit cramped

I booked The Romeo and Juliet for four nights in July and whatever was available for three nights in August. For that stay I got The Charmeine. R & J was an average-sized room, but with a hot-tub in it (useless for my 80-year old husband) and lots and lots of heavy furniture, it left very little space in which to move. The ensuite bathroom with sink and shower was tiny, even for us short and slender people. The Charmeine was considerably smaller and felt more like a walk-in closet with a bed than a room. The bathroom was as tiny as the one in the Romeo and Juliet. For one night the two rooms might have been ok, but for our longer stay they were not comfortable. On the positive, the breakfasts were imaginative and excellent, the waitresses were competent and friendly, the breakfast room was pleasant, and the location was convenient to downtown and The Avon theatre. Even The Festival Theatre was walkable - about 35 minutes for us slow-pokes. All in all, it was not bad, but pricey for what was offered, and I will keep looking and reading reviews before I make my 2014 reservations.

Thanks for an excellent visit!

The breakfasts were amazing! Wonderful local choices and well prepared and served! Our servers and room preppers- Siobhan and her sister Leigh- what a treat! Very warm friendly and knowledgeable about where to eat, what to do. Just great fun- like having our own daughters around! Good luck back at school! We stayed 4 nights while visiting Stratford. We booked our theatre choices and then tried to find lodging. We thought we were early enough to have an easy time making a reservation- we were so wrong! I finally called the pres of the B & B assoc and he was terrific- TY. Pat, the owner squeezed us in and was helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. Keep the shiny side up- (we both ride motorcycles). We stayed 2 nights one room and 2 nights another in the Stone Maiden. Loved that the older touches and charm very much preserved with the modern needs present as well. Easy walking to all downtown spots- restaurants, theatres and shopping. Thanks for making our Stratford stay such fun!

Very nice

We received a Travel Zoo voucher from family for Christmas. What a lovely place. From the front it's an old Victorian from the back it is an old classic small hotel (renovated inside to make good sized rooms). The owner met us with a smile, hot chocolate and wonderful cookies. The room was large and tastefully decorated (and had an on-suite). Breakfast was fantastic and they were able and happy to work with our dietary restrictions (lactose intolerant vegetarians). It's a short walk to the downtown (or drive in the cold weather) and surrounded by a beautiful residential area.

Stone Maiden with a Warm Heart

Our host, Pat, made us feel very welcome right from the start. We enjoyed the history of the " house " and although we didn't avail ourselves of the breakfast, those who did were in for a treat. We liked the close proximity to the many restaurants in Stratford. All in all: well maintained, appointed and serviced. Will not disappoint.

Review of the Stone Maiden Inn, Stratford, Ontario

During the past several years we have stayed at a number of Stratford area Inns and Bed & Breakfasts and we found that the Stone Maiden Inn was our best experience yet. There really was not a downside to our stay there, with our room (The Secret Garden) very clean and very quiet, as well as having several unique and interesting quirks of architecture and design. The hosts were gracious and accommodating. Trish was very helpful when we arrived, and Pat had already been especially helpful when we had to rebook our original reservation to this later date after I sustained an injury that precluded travel. Breakfast was superb, with several fresh and delicious entrees to choose from. In all, a most splendid experience.

" May all who enter as guests.. leave as friends "

This saying is posted on the front door of this lovely historic B & B and it is true. Pat & Trish, our hosts, treated us with warm hospitality & provided the most delicious gourmet breakfasts! We appreciated their kind attention to sugar free meal requirements & look forward to returning to the charming Stone Maiden Inn when we next return to Stratford, Ontario.

Perfect!

We recently stayed two perfectly lovely nights at the Stone Maiden Inn. The proprietors, Pat and Trish are attentive, personable, and thoughtful. We stayed in the Secret garden Room and had a ball. We enjoyed a variety of breakfast delights and very smooth coffee, all of which are locally sourced. We will be back!

Wonderful stay

Our first visit at this beautiful B & B. Great hosts, comfortable accommodations, and a lovely breakfast. Hope to return there again. The location was close in town and to the Festival Theatre. A perfect weekend. Thanks to the owners Tim and Johanne.

Great week in Canada!

We had wonderful experience at Stone Maiden last week! The breakfasts at the Inn were superb! Our room was on a smaller size, but well appointed and clean. Our hosts, Johanne and Tim, were very hospitable and helpful in advising us to where to eat and what to see and assisting us with reservations. The Inn is within walking distance to Avon and Patterson theaters and the brisk walks were welcomed after so many excellent meals. We look forward to another visit in the near future!

Beautiful Spot for a Lovely Vacation

We recently spent a few days in Stratford, Ontario with our two kids. Tim was wonderfully helpful in shuffling things around so the kids could have their own room. The accommodations were beautiful and comfortable, and daily breakfasts were simply a gastronomic delight. I would recommend this B & B to anyone looking for a quiet place to stay while visiting Stratford.

Feeling perfectly at home at the Stone Maiden Inn

We stayed here for one evening in the Romeo and Juliet room. The hosts were friendly and welcoming and accommodating. The room itself was wonderful. The B and B is in a perfect location in a quiet little neighbourhood just a couple of blocks from downtown and several nice restaurants and the Avon theatre. We would (and will) definitely stay there again on our next trip to the festival. Highly recommended.

Wonderful! Great breakfast and convenient to theaters

A lovely stay. Quiet but a ten to twenty-five minute walk to all the theaters. Wonderful breakfasts - creme brule, ricotta fritters, fresh juice. Tim was wonderful and kind and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Stone Maiden Inn

My best friend and I stayed here over the weekend while attending the festival. We had a terrific stay! The Inn itself is beautiful and the grounds are gorgeous with lots of different places to sit and relax. Our room was nicely laid out. The overhead ceiling fan gave a nice breeze for sleeping. There is a convenient tea / coffee station that guests can help themselves to 24 / 7 and the breakfast offerings were outstanding. Although I believe the Inn was fully booked, it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. My friend and I didn't hear anything from any other guests through the night at all. I would highly recommend a stay here; I will certainly do a return stay next time I am in Stratford for a show.

Beautiful hotel, conveniently located

The Stone Maiden Inn is an old hotel, lushly decorated and pristinely kept. Our beds were comfortable; the bathroom was modern and everything worked perfectly; and the breakfast was absolutely excellent, with great choices and all delicious! The Inn keeper is very nice and helpful. We plan to go to plays in Stratford regularly, and we will most definitely stay at the Stone Maiden.

Overpriced for what you get

This is the first time I have written about a B & B, though I have been to many over the past 40 years. And I'm sorry to say I'm writing because we were disappointed, and because I don't think this place deserves # 4 in the list on Trip Advisor, especially considering the price. My friend and I paid $199 on a so-called deal from Expedia. The new owners need to step up their game, or they are going to lose repeat visitors. This does not feel like a " premiere boutique hotel ", providing " exceptional customer service " as advertised on their website. For one thing, a hotel would have staff on site at all times. They do not. Good small hotels often have a computer for guest use. They do not. The online pictures are much nicer than what you find in the rooms which are pretty and clean, but were probably decorated about 25 years ago. The carpets are old and need replacement, especially those in the halls and on the stairs. Both the interior and exterior of the house and gardens need sprucing up. We arrived soon after the suggested time and were greeted by the owner and his daughter in a very chilly front hall. The owner was in a rush to depart, but his daughter was very helpful. We were shown to a coffee / tea stand where there's a Quality Inn type hot water machine for tea, but no milk on the stand, though milk was brought at our request. I would have appreciated them making me a mug or pot of fresh tea and a cookie - a small gesture and cost which would have taken the chill off the entry. Many B & Bs offer this service, and it makes guests feel welcome. To be fair, when asked, they brought us milk and cream and put it in the second floor fridge for later use, though the water bottles promised to the other pair of guests never materialized. The information booklets in the room were old, not particularly informative (we needed a map of the downtown), and obviously had been created by the previous owners, as the host names inside were wrong, and the old ones on the cover were scratched out. We sat downstairs, which was lovely, but couldn't help but notice a dusty old Christmas dried flower / berry display on the mantle. It seemed symbolic of the house itself.. old and tired, but with great potential. The room we had booked (Edwina) had not been set up as requested (maybe they don't get information through from Expedia as I read that this happened to someone else). The daughter and housekeeper were very helpful and would have changed it immediately... again, a small thing, but together with other things, an indication of lack of attention-to-detail or organization. The place seemed empty, and we saw a room one floor up (Anael) which was much brighter and already set up for twins, so we suggested we just stay there. It was a nice room, with lovely sheets and pillows and comfortable beds, though the water during my morning shower was not hot. One more chair could have fit and would have been a welcome addition. The third floor room was a cheaper price, but no reduction was offered. We didn't expect that, but would have appreciated being asked. So suggestion to travellers - in the spring and the fall, when it's neither hot nor cold outside, pick Anael over Edwina, if you want twin beds. It's a brighter and cheaper room. Coming in about 10 o'clock at night was a bit eerie. We thought we were the only ones there, though it turned out there were two others. The owners leave the doors open until 11 pm, which seemed late to us. I would not have wanted to be in that house if I were coming back alone. In the morning, I asked for boiling water for my tea and got it, but could hear the owner complaining to the other staff and wondering why I wouldn't just use the machine (which is not boiling), and how weird that seemed. Warning to the owner and staff... we can hear your conversations in the dining room when you are in the kitchen! Plus - some people really like freshly boiled water for tea, maybe even in a teapot - especially if they are paying " boutique hotel " prices. That being said, the breakfast was large and delicious! Whoever does the cooking is excellent. So all of these comments may seem petty... it feels petty writing them... especially after having a lovely visit to see a musical. But I really think the present owners are riding on the reputation of previous hosts, and they shouldn't do that for long. The testimonials on their website are before their time, and the awards on their walls are as well. Soon, they will be losing all the goodwill built up over the years. Running a good B & B depends on attention-to-detail and a genuine interest in the guests. Tim didn't convey that to us. We didn't meet Joanna.

Wonderful B & B

My friend and I stayed at the Inn during a recent visit to the Festival. The hosts were very welcoming - including Elvis the black Lab. The Inn's common areas and rooms are clean, very comfortable and well cared for. It is an old building so be prepared for stairs. The breakfast was heavenly! We really enjoyed our stay!

Wonderful B and B in Stratford, Ontario

We had occasion to stay at the Stone Maiden Inn B & B in late April 2016. Our visit was a wonderful experience. The rooms are lovely and all are different. Each one has a private bathroom, and there are at least three outdoor patio and garden areas which can be used for relaxing. The host, Tim, was very friendly and accommodating regarding our many questions and offered much useful advice. The breakfasts were excellent, with a nice variety of food - different every day. We had four children with us and they enjoyed the accommodations as much as we did. I would highly recommend the Stone Maiden Inn.

A happy visit with the Bard of Stratford

We so enjoyed our 2 nights at the Stone Maiden Inn. Tim and Joanne could not have been more gracious or welcoming hosts. The room we had with our daughter was a delight; on the top most floor of the house with lovely amenities. The breakfasts were simply out of this world and a great way to launch our experience of Macbeth and then A Chorus Line. The B & B is nearby a park to which we walked and the town itself boasts fabulous restaurants. We picnicked in the park overlooking the Avon. All in all a perfect place for a happy outing made especially so by the kindness of Time and Joanne.

Not a good experience

Look like this is a good place to stay if you are here in summer. I was the only guest. Before checking in, I got email and phone message that owner has to go for a un-avoidable event. That's okay but no one showed up until I checked myself out around 3PM next day. Room was cold so portable heater was the only option for me. Cereal and coffee was the only option in breakfast by helping myself. Overall I wasn't a happy customer.

Walking distance to theatres

Walking distance to downtown, the Avon and Studio theatres. A brisk 20 minute walk to the Festival theatre. A real plus was being allowed to leave the car there both before check in and after check out. Our room at around 230.00 CDN including taxes was tiny with an old fashioned TV and non functioning remotes. The bathroom was also tiny but adequate. Breakfast was great. Bed was comfortable. Wallpaper was peeling and there was no room to put the open suitcase unless you use the only chair.

Friends outing but Inn turned out ok

Having read the excellent review we elected to stay with four couples who annually travel to Stratford to review what has happened in our lives this past year as well as take in the wonderful productions that the Shakespeare Festival has annually.. This Inn seemed like a good bet. New owners have taken over and I find that they are just not up in keeping emails that I have been sent regarding our upcoming trip. I had made the reservations for four rooms and had provided the Inn with the names of our people that will be attending along with the room that each couple would share during our time here. This was necessary as some of the rooms were more expensive and couples had paid to be in the rooms reserved. Upon arrival I was shocked to learn that the Inn did not know this information so I had to try and remember who paid for which room as I did not bring my list along with me. Hopefully, I remembered correctly. My second concern was with the water pressure which was low at least in my room and one other guest also commented on this issue. Another was one of the toilet seats had a tendency to swivel when seating on it. Our room the Violet was just a double bed which we knew going in but was not aware that the room was so small that one had to crawl over one another as most seniors do have a need to get relief during the night. Just to tight a space. Breakfast was good but not exceptional. The good news is we were able to catch up with old friends that have known one another for some 55 plus years.

Denton House is the second place here

We stayed one night at Dunton House - a short walk across the river from downtown Stratford. It has 2 suites in an old house, good parking. Nice bed, lots of windows and a kitchenette all well laid out. Be a great place to stay for several days. Very nice and enjoyable.

Perfect place to watch a play and see Stratford - home of Justin Beiber

If you are going to Stratford to see a play, you must stay at a B & B. I saw chorus line, it was a great play. This inn provided you with a delicious breakfast, ricotta fritters with berry compote, coffee, juice and a choice of sausage or salmon on pastry with hollandaise sauce topped with a sunny side up egg and a side of dressed arugula. Delicious! It's a walk away from the Main Street that are full of interesting shops and restaurants.

Fantastic!

Stayed here with my fiancée for a weekend visit. The inn and the room were in great condition. We stayed in the Secret Garden which was nice as we felt like we were away from any other guests. We visited in January and had a great time. Trish and Pat were warm and welcoming and helped us get passes for the Bacon and Ale Trail, as well as the Chocolate Trail. The choices for breakfast were always very interesting and quite delicious! Highly recommended!
