My review
This is where my aunt's wedding was held. We stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights and I can say that the accommodation was good. The room is clean and air-conditioned, the bed is soft and big, and their food is delicious, especially the iced tea. But I only gave four stars because there were things that bothered us during that stay. First, they didn't let us use the pool even if the cut-off was at 8 pm and we went there to swim at 6 pm. Second, there are creepy experiences during the night because there are knocks but there is no one outside once we open the door. The lights and water would suddenly turn off without a reason. But we understand because it's an old hotel already. Nonetheless, our stay was well taken care of by the staff and the wedding was successful so it was still worth it.
Best choice when in Surigao City
Given the room rates and the fact that this is a standard-class hotel, this would be the best place you could stay in Surigao City. The hotel seems to have been recently renovated. The room I got was clean, and everything (including the air conditioner, bathroom, and refrigerator) was working. While the complimentary breakfast offers minimal choices, it is a buffet rather than a plated breakfast. For those who want to have specific things at breakfast, I would suggest you either bring it with you or store it in the refrigerator; if not, buy it from the Gaisano Mall down the street.
Terrible experience
The hotel is under construction, it was noisy. No wifi, no cable, no hot shower. The bed linen is dirty. Staffs are not truthful about the construction going on the floor. Food is bad, had to go out and look for a fast food. Terrible experience
Pool Closed, Restaurant Expensive, Rooms Average
We contacted the hotel before booking rooms to confirm children's pool access. Upon arrival (8 adults, 2 children), we were told the pools were closed for maintenance; negating the entire reason for choosing that hotel. Rooms were ok - bathrooms needed work. Restaurant was ridiculous. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger, took more than an hour before it was ready. Everyone else decided to order out, so placed order for burger, then traveled to the mall and bought fried chicken, etc. Long line at the Jollybee, but still returned and delivered everyone's food before burger was ready. Was charged 400 Philippine pesos (about 8 dollars) for 3 slices of bacon - an " add on ".
Poor
Room smells damp, dirty beddings, paint on the wall was peeling all over, hair on the floor even before we settled in, weak airconditioning No hotel slippers Mosquitoes all over POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE Nonexistent internet (Front desk said it was just an " isolated case " due to bad signal, but based on other reviews, internet's always down. Front desk did not offer any solution but to wait. They should have asked PLDT for assistance since the internet was down the whole afternoon up until evening)
Food always good!
Gateway Hotel is where we bring guests! Most of our functions are also here at Gateway. Food is always good! They have a pool open for a minimal fee. Chinese Pilipino & international cuisine. Staff are always courteous.
Very Poor Customer Service
This is the only hotel that I've been to where the customer service is terrible in the truest sense of the word. The manager and receptionists do not know how to talk properly to guests. No proper endorsements and no proper briefing and / or seminar to the staff. You're supposed to be in hospitality industry and yet you are not hospitable! The customer service of vendors in markets are way better than the customer service in this hotel. Actually terrible is an understatement! Worst experience ever! Don't book this hotel! Not worth your money!
Slow renovation
Philippine Gateway Hotel Its good they are undergoing renovation or else they will be overtaken by new hotels. Our room was renovated already. The wardrobe cabinet & beverage corner is very chic, has ample shelves / storage space in the room. The bathroom is wd soap, shampoo & toothbrush wd hotel logo, but floor tiles is slippery that caused us to slip several times in the shower area though not serious, no toilet paper holder & lavatory faucet is loose that may easily break; the shower area is cramped wd the ready made cubicle for shower, hot water is centralized not the portable type. Faucets are wd the convenient lever type. The beauty of the bathroom renovation was compromised by the work on the old door & jamb. Lacks mirror fronting the dresser / table since its behind the beverages. New beds wd adequate power outlets & light switches at the side. These are the marked improvements aside from fresh coat of paint. Their transformation is a work in process but rather slowww which shld have prioritized the lobby area that is still on going after several years. One of the few hotels in the area that has a swimming pool. They have retained their buffet breakfast wc has at least 3 main choices, and 2 choices of fresh fruits. You can opt for a continental breakfast wd the choices. Service here was good. We attended a function at Sagisi and it is dirty. We stayed for 4nights without fixing their wifi. Parking lot has no overseer, you can park occupying 2slots and motorcycles & cars can park without consideration if other cars can easily pass. Make-up of room is bad, they dont remove dirt sticking on the floor. Beddings has some insect that left me itchy on my legs wd bites. I found some things under the bed belonging to the previous occupants.
Horribly Run. Ant Infested
The point of a reservation is to have a room ready when you check-in. We checked-in and told due to being busy our room wouldn't be ready for up to an hour. Not acceptable with a 2yo and 8 month old needing changed and a nap. Stayed in family member's room until we called asking if our room was ready when they were going to call us. The room we waited on to be cleaned still had stuff of carpet unvacuumed and ANTS ALL OVER THE ROOM. One of worst experiences of hotel we've had. Unprofessional. In restaurant the waited mistook an item we ordered. Manager wouldn't exchange it and said too bad. Too bad your waiter is incompetant? So paid for an item nobody wanted or ordered nor barely touched.
Yummiest!
I went to Surigao purposely for business meetings and secretly to indulge myself in eating crabs. So, craving satisfied with our sumptuous lunch here. Yummiest, not only in their crab dish but the other dishes as well. The food here is so delish! Will definitely come back here with the family next time.
Much Improved Restaurant
I visit Surigao once or twice a year and normally eat at the hotel a few times each visit, not because there's anything special about it but there's not anything a whole lot better here. My previous visits mirror most of the other poor reviews. This trip we tried our luck again and found the service, food, and cleanliness much improved. The place was packed even at 4PM but the food came out after a reasonable wait, piping hot. Never stayed in the hotel so I have no comment in that area.
5 weeks philipines
Hello, This is the most horrible hotel there is. The restaurant breakfast is aldays the same no bread enough no meat enough cafe you must ask there is none juice is always empty bread you must asked only rice rice rice and dry fish and cooked eggs pffffff terribly dirty nobody friendly no focus on there job..... My room is cleaning on 17.00 u I must asked for 3 times.... day after a little bit better cleaning on 15.00 u I traveled already around the Philippines never but never I found one badly hotel of this one this is never never never one hotel that I booked again... And my wife here family is living here in this area.
Always good food!!
Since we live in this city, we find Gateway Hotel the best in dining pleasure. Their food is always properly done and tasteful. Service is ok, staff courteous. We always bring our guests here and they have never disappointed us:)
May suffice
I stayed here three days two nights attending a seminar workshop. Rooms may suffice, toiletries available, quiet clean bathrooms, no room slippers, internet good, buffet breakfast fair, staff accommodating but not diehard friendly esp. the waiters, conference room not cold just cool, warm near the stage, ample parking, and loc. in the city outskirts.
Disappointing
Entrance to hotel parking was misleading. Hotel Rooms were worn out and old with unpleasant smell, old wooden beds, worn out towels and in totality needed renovation and upgrades. Concierge service was poorly handled. Our baggages were mistakenly loaded to another vehicle by the guard! Restaurant staff and even the manager that day were unfriendly and condescending. They were more concerned on the number of excess persons than their services. Food was ordinary. When we checked in late at night, teens who partied in their ballroom were so loud in the lobby the staff did not even mind calling their attention. Front desk people were not that accommodating. Our short overnight stay was disappointing. Hotel looks nice and welcoming on the outside but once you have checked jn, it gave us only dismay.
Nice For a Stay over
We should take a ferry from Surigao But that had left so we have to wait until next day. Then we drop in here at Gateway hotel, located a long the main road a little before main centrum. We had a twin bed room in 4 floor for 2400 peso including breakfast. Not bad. Staff was polite but a little slow. The room was easy furniture whit a chair, tv, fridge and water boiler. No safe. There was a good bed for both me and my wife. We slept good. There are air con in the room and we had enough towels. Big parking in front between main road the building. Much noise in the main road whith pubs and traffic, so in the back is recommend. They have a pool in their backyard. Breakfast was simple. Ice tea, coffee and water for drink. There was rice, fried egg, fried fish some fruit, vegetables and bread. After all we got what we paid for so do not complains. So to conclude I would not stay here for a long vacation, but it's ok for a few nights. Will have no problem stay here again.
This Hotel need alot of work
Food, Rooms and staff needs a lot of work! the swimming pool smells and the whole hotel really needs a make over. The air conditioning was pretty warm and the staff wasn't that helpful. I'd rather stay in a barn than to come back here.
Worm found in caesar salad
We ordered caesar salad. It took a while to be served. When it was served, we found worm in it. There are flies everywhere too in their restaurant. Room is ok. We won't be returning to this hotel again
Never go to this hotel
Aside from the fact that this hotel is dirty and has big rats loitering in their swimming pool, the hotel staff are the worst. They will eat together with you in the restaurant and throws away kitchen utensils like they're just in their house kitchen. The rooms are dusty and the aircon is noisy and it really smells bad. The manager at their breakfast has a very bad attitude and i think he should be fired otherwise that restaurant manjago will soon be closed.
Recently renovated, but many flaws
My wife and I stayed in the Executive Suite on the newly renovated 4th floor. The suite was bright and spacious with good lighting, a 40+ " TV and inexplicably, two queen beds. Still the beds were comfortable inner-spring with ample pillows. Air-conditioning is well done. We had dinner in the spacious downstairs restaurant. The food was excellent. ... and that concludes all the positive comments I have about the Gateway. Here are the negatives: 1) Unprofessional staff - particularly noticeable in the restaurant, but evident throughout the hotel. You will find staff lounging in all areas of the hotel's public areas using facebook, watching youtube videos, and socializing with each other. 2) Plumbing and finish: There is no functional hot water and the plumbing appears to have been completed by the lowest bidder. The overall design and quality of fixtures is good, but when it comes to the details, errors abound, with gaps in the tile, reversed mixing valves in the showers etc. The lack of hot water however, will keep me from coming back here. 3) Bugs. Cleanliness appeared good, but for some reason, there are huge flies and monstrous cockroaches in the room. 4) The free breakfast is worth every peso you pay for it. In summary: The Gateway has a lot of potential, but the obviously poor management has laid a foundation of mediocrity for this hotel.
Old rooms
Needs cleaning. They are expanding but they are not improving the existing rooms. We went here for a 3-day seminar and participants were accommodated. The hotel is a little messy because of the continuous construction but I hope they will also try to improve the old rooms. Good staff and dining area but poor quality of rooms and seminar halls.
Needs to be cleaned but overall it was good
I read from a review that this hotel was dusty and so I was hoping that the hotel management was able to read that review and made the necessary cleanups and improvements. I stayed here last week and to my disdain I saw the exact description made by that previous reviewer. The stairs and floors upstairs were dusty. I could literally see the mop trail. Housekeeping was not thorough in cleaning. There were dusts even on the table at the 3rd floor... you know, the table you find just outside the elevator area. There were also mattreses and bottles of liquors strewn on the floor just outside the elevator. I checked-in during the evening but I still saw those things so the staff was slow in keeping those things away. The room I was i was a mix of a hotel and a boarding house feeling. The bed and mattresses were like from a boarding house. Despite that I had a good sleep and my back did not ache. The AC was also good. The water is hot and cold but I really needed to master the shower otherwise the hot water wont get thru. The water pressure was also good but the hot water pressure was very low. The bathroom had toothbrush, shampoo and soap. A decade before, i stayed in the same floor in this hotel and i was amazed by the rooms. I guess they really needed to keep up with the competition and its reputation as a 3-star hotel. I mean, cmon, government VIPs are billeted in this hotel, can't they try to keep it dust-free? Breakfast food was good except that there were flies in the resto and the refill was slow. The restaurant OJTs were just staring at the guests and didn't even bother to check the chafing dishes if there was still food, until a guest scolded them to check it from time to time. The check-in and check-out was a breeze and organized. I would love to have my friends and family stay here in the future, so I hope they would take our reviews constructively and seriously. PS. The resto serves japanese food. Yummy. Lomi and boullabaise soups are a must try. Halohalo or Fruit overload for dessert. The hotel has a pool and has rooms for conventions and seminars. Hotel is very accessible to multicabs and tricycles. You can commute to the city but this area is very busy to traffic so watch out when you cross the highway.
Nice on the outside, terrible on the inside
Stayed at this hotel in that other similar level hotels were fully booked. Upon arriving at the hotel the outside was very inviting, clean and presentable. Check in was efficient and pleasant with employees all very nice. We were assigned a room on the 2nd floor. The first thing i noticed was that the front foyer windows were covered with cobwebs and dust. As we head to our room on the 2nd floor there were lots of evidence of ongoing construction, dust everywhere. The room was of decent size, that's about the only good thing. The room was old and the carpeting even older. The bathroom vanity was broken and ceiling covered with mold. There were constant banging and construction during the day starting at 8A. Bed sheets were so thin you could see through them. There were 3 of us and the hotel only provided 2 bath towels, we had to ask several times for additional towels, almost an act of Congress to actually get a 3rd. The free internet is super slow and often cuts off. The pool was closed for chemical treatment / repair but no one from the management bothered to tell other tourists with young kids who were splashing and swimming around. The free breakfast provided was scant and few selection. Overall this hotel DID NOT rise to their advertisement.
Excellent stay
Hubby and I stayed here because of Typhoon Agaton - naval travel was cancelled. For P1, 600.00 we got a standard room with complimentary buffet breakfast. Room was fairly spacious, AC cold, with good hot / cold water pressure. Pool was good (I had time to swim) before checkout. Accepts credit cards. Hotel NOT contemporary but excellent location (for our use) since it's the first hotel from the Lipata Port. There's wifi but limited to two gadgets. Parking is secure and plentiful. I'm pretty happy with this place and will come back.
we had a good stay:)
The hotel is old and was affected by the earthquake early this year but improvement is on-going. Good points: good location-just along the main highway, gated (secured) parking area, delicious breakfast buffet, have swimming pool (which is a must for families with young children like us), friendly staff and the price is reasonable (Php1800 good for 2, children below age 12 free to stay, with breakfast buffet good for 2 already, we paid additional php150 each for our 2 children, ages 4 and 9. Their restaurant also offers good and reasonably priced food. So if you arrived late in the evening, need not worry because you can eat there (open until 10pm).
Good staff, not so good rooms
This hotel needs to finish their renovation and up their standard. At a cost of P1800 per night for a Superior Room - there should be at least a fridge in the room. But apparently, you only get a fridge if you stay in the more expensive rooms. If you ask for an extra towel - it will cost you P100 extra for each towel! The cleanliness of the areas both inside and outside was also a bit disappointing. My room wasn't even cleaned when I arrived, and I had to ask that the sheets be replaced as it was quite obvious it has not been changed. The staff on the other hand, are very polite and accommodating. Cannot complain about their customer service. The nightly entertainment at the restaurant was also a plus. Breakfast selection was ample.
Classy and Affordable
My husband and I stayed overnight (September 30 to October 1) with our 2 kids (2 & 3 y. o.) in a Standard Room 2 single beds for Php1, 600.00. The room has all the necessary amenities you need towel, dental kit, complimentary water, tv, hot and cold shower, wifi, aircon, soap, shampoo and tissue. The staffs are accommodating and has good customer service. They also have swimming pool for both adults and kids for free if you are guests of the hotel, Php75 per head if outsider. The food were great. The servings of their food can cater 3 to 4 persons. The best part of our stay was the free breakfast buffet at their restaurant. It was so classy. Overall, kinda expensive compared to other BB worth 600 per stay, but here you get what you paid for. Keep up the good works Gateway Hotel and Staff! We will surely come back.
Old hotel
This hotel needs renovation. We were transferred to another room cos the old room we had, the aircon was not working well and the toilet also wont flush. We also had an email extra bed & it will give u a back pain, the bed was too tough. I just think that they need to seriously renovate all their rooms & change their aircons to a new one.
Good Lunch ⭐⭐⭐
Came here for a lunch feast. Everything was great, our favourite was teriyak beef! Good food but service could do a bit more speed and they forgot about our sinigang soup : (would still come back though.
Still Under Renovation
This is an old hotel here in Surigao. It is under renovation so its facade is not that pleasing to the eyes. I think this is a 3-star hotel. It has a pool for kids and a pool for adults. It also has function halls if you want to have parties like birthdays and weddings. Food here is ok. Its not really that mouth-watering, scrumptious meal. We ate here last March 2017. It was a despidida party for my aunt and uncle who's going back to Australia. My Uncle ordered a steak but GOD! that steak was too burned and too salty, too much soy sauce too. I would not recommend it to others who would want to order a steak. Other food are manageable. Just don't expect too much.
Two thumbs up
One of the best hotels I stayed at. The staff are accommodating. The rooms are big and clean. They provide fast wifi connection and replenish shampoo, soap, toothpaste and even toothbrush daily! Will surely come back!
Old hotel
Hotel was obviously old but it's sort of one of the big hotels in surigao city (there are very few btw). Room was still in good condition although it did smell of old wood. A few spritz of air freshener would have done the trip. Ordered food at the pool resto but food came in after 45 mins. Pool was warm which is a plus. Breakfast buffet was very limited. Only had 2 viands: Bangus or Tuna. What if i don't eat both? Overall it's a good hotel for a quick overnight stay but for a staycation, Surigao deserves so much more
Central location
Stayed one night, rooms under upgrading ans not completed. renovated rooms very good, stayed in de luxe which was not renovated, but OK for one night. Lobby / Resturant / Pool area very nice. Free Parking outside. Average food / service in the resturant.
CHRISTMAS PARTY
Personnel are accommodating and have excellent services rendered their amenities are renovated upgraded.comfortable and very good crew.. very courteous and food are suitable for all occasions. venue are good and very comfortable any age.
Okay hotel-- not good breakfast
My first stay in the hotel. Ate at their restaurant which I think food was average. The hotel room was okay -- good for an overnight stay and for its price but the breakfast was not acceptable. I had guest and paid P200 each but better if I treated them in jollies or any chain store. I can also compare breakfast in Tavern hotel where I stayed in 2015. It has more choices and appetizing.
Needs Improvements
The hotel was kinda old but clean I might add also the receptionist was friendly and accommodating. What disappointed me was the restaurant staff it seems they where a bit arrogant and service-wise had no clue. They gave me the impression that they didn't want to do Thier jobs. Overall they need to improve.
4 star hotel in town
We been here becuase we celebrated my birthday, accessible becuase its on highway itself, good customer service, beautiful function room, good amenities, nice breakfast what else you can find here a called " package " everything you want....
Beware of the supervisor
Service is poor in this hotel. The supervisor was rude and did not have an inkling of what guests deserve in terms of service. He was discourteous and did not take his job seriously. The housekeeping staff loitered in the rooms instead of getting down to the business of cleaning briskly. One guy was caught by my friend (on an unexpected visit to his hotel room) sprawled on his bed. My bathroom faucet leaked. The washbowl was cracked. We had to ask for a bath mat because we didn't have one.
Average plus
It's overall a good stay, according to surigao standard. It's a fairly big hotell, and under constant reconstruction, or so it seems. I stayed here in December 2015, in a deluxe twin room. We just put our twin beds together to make a double bed. Room is spacious, and clean. No bugs, but you cannot avoid some evil mosquitos to enter at night. Big refrigerator in the room is a plus, and very friendly staff. Good wifi. Downside is breakfast. It's a buffet, but not so much to choose, and also cold. Has to improve. But the dinners are very tasty. To my knowledge it's the only hotel in surigao with a pool, except for Almont Resort witch is way in the middle of nowhere. But overall such a nice stay I had that I decided to have my wedding reception at the gateway in July.
The Gateway
Not exactly of De-Luxe marks, but Gateway may be the best hotel in provincial Surigao City. Being provincial, it is cozy! The large glass windows open to a magnificent view of the hills, and beyond the hills more magnificent views of the sea and islands, what Surigao is world famous for. The sights when one travels are breathtaking! Being provincial too means that the staff needs training, and experience. Looks like many of the employees are just off college from some hotel-and-restaurant management degree from the local colleges, and this under-training shows. " Waiting " in the large restaurant takes a different meaning from what waiters are hired for. Wi-fi sucks, and I believe that this situation torments many Philippine cities. Food is good, but for solo travelers like me, the large 3-4 person servings don't help out my choices, especially for fish- and veggie-eaters like me. The breakfast is the usual un-healthy Pinoy fare: corned beef, bacon, and eggs swimming in lard. Worse, this hotel doesn't have brewed coffee. But I'd go for Gateway anytime I'm in Surigao. The friendly easiness is there. The smiles are everywhere. There's a large family pool outside. It's location is well-placed, in the intersections of lines that move to the city and to the next province of Agusan.
Gateway Hotel Surigao
I would rate this as a 3 star hotel max. I believe the hotel is undergoing major renovation hence the additional outside wall, the lifts are being installed at the time we were there. When we arrived there was no hot water in the shower, table lamp and remote control for the TV did not work, but the maintenance people put all this right. we paid extra for extra pillow. The staff was very friendly, the coffee was black and hot, the breakfast was terrible unless you like rice with everything. I complained a little and got a full dish of fresh Pineapple. I have seen worse but I am afraid I can not recommend the place at this stage.
Average Hotel
Gateway Hotel is under renovation, but still there are lots of rooms to stayed... rooms are big and wide... but no free bottled water coz most of hotels i stayed there are 2 bottled water free in accomodation. Staffs were friendly and accomodating... good that they have swimming pool... wifi in the lobby is good, but in respective rooms you cant connect so i used my own wifi... FREE BREAKFAST but FOODS are not so good... we ate at 9 am but no more foods so we just ate what were left cold in the serving dish... there were 2 kinds of fruits... melon and papaya... and juices too... but then gateway hotel is still good to stay in... there were live band singer on the restaurant during dinner... acoustic singers... well they're good performers... more improvements coming as they were expanding and renovating. God bless!
Just good
Just good. No elevator. It's a hassle. I won't book this hotel for a family vacation. I was booked because it's for business dealing so I had no choice. Foods are just Ok a bit expensive. Not really worth it for the amount you pay. Rooms are clean but it's just OK nothing special on it. The only concern is no elevators.
Really disappointing
We booked an executive room but got really disappointed. Nothing about the room felt executive, it was less than okay. We got an old room, uncleaned carpet floor (bottle caps under the bed the two nights we've stayed there!!), small ants were crawling on the table and the bathroom was old with ants crawling as well. I did complain and they said that they've sprayed something but the ants were still there. The hotel looks good on the outside, but I hope they're gonna do something about the rooms. Renovation is needed. Poor selection of food in the breakfast buffet. The only thing positive is their front desk with friendly staff.
Disgusting service, disgusting food selections and servings
We ate there for lunch, they recommended a menu set good for one and when the food were served it was not good for one, good for half only, small servings for an expensive price, their so-called " gateway chicken " is a gateway to hell, very plain and very dry, Fastfoods have even better chickens. Food portions are so small. Ok to make long story short I will itemized all of it 1. Dry chicken 2. Hard and gummy beef 3. Water served not cold 4. Lumpia shanghai it just like nothing is inside. 5. The worst, their waiters and staffs are very impolite especially the gay one, I think it is their manager who acts like someone, thinking he is earning a lot already. BAD SERVICE! Eat here and you will have the best experience ever. Over all not a value for money. Better try other restaurants in the city, there are better and more value
Smelly room
With friends who had their wedding reception there and the rooms really smelled. The toilets needed a good clean. The hotel is under refurbishment and looks a mess from the outside. The room where wedding reception was held was nice.
really disappointing
During booking they told us that there is a renovation but will be finish in May. renovation would be very necessary - but nothing. Only building extension in construction. Our room was worn-out and needs urgently renovation. The water was warm, but not hot. The aircons switched off several time (without timer) and we had to go up always to start again. In the mnorning we just asked for replacement of towels, free water and soap and During our booking, they told us that there is a renovation but it will be finish in May. In the morning we just asked for replacement of towels, free water and soap and told them that no need for clean up. In the night at 10 PM, they called us and asked for the payment of the two free-water bottles. There is no elevator in the hotel. You have to use always the stairs. The swimming pool was acceptable, but the area was too dirty and unattractive. We asked for a payment for late checkout (just 3 hours, because we had a convention and just wanted to change the clothes before leaving the hotel) and they answered that we have to pay for the whole night. The breakfast buffet was for us as foreigners not good (simple Filipino style). Our dinner in the restaurant (a la carte) was very more than disappointing. told them that no need for clean up. In the night at 10 PM they called us and asked for the payment of the 2 free-water bottles. Their is no elevator in the hotel. You have to use always the stairs. Nice was that they allowed us an early check in but when we asked for late check out (3 hours, because we had a convention and just wanted to change the clothes before leaving the hotel) they answered that we have to pay for the whole night. We never would stay in this hotel again.
Average hotel
Our family stayed here overnight. We find the hotel average but the rate for our room back then was also average, so I guess we were getting what we paid for. What we really appreciated during our stay was the friendly staff in the dining area.
Just an Average Hotel
This is just an average hotel to start with. The foos and rooms are nothing but very plain and ordinary. I foubd the mattress in my room to be very dusty, The outdoor pool however just made me like WOW. The function room near the pool is hard to access because it was raining when we had a meeting there. The pathway to the nain area of the hotel has no roof therefore we got all wet on our way to the rooms after our meeting. Services are just plain and ok. No internet in the rooms only in specific areas of the hotel but still very slow net connection.
We stayed, but as usual it was the staff that let the place down !
Why invest in a hotel, and then employ third rate people ? I don't understand it, and they are aware that their reputation is in tatters ! We arrived and told them specifically that we wanted a room with a double bed. They offered me a promo room on the 3rd floor (no lift) so we walked up with our bags and got to the room and found that it had two single beds ! I said that I wanted a double ! they offered me the room on the second floor, but we would have to change the next night, i said that I would be happy to move, and they then said it was 1450 pesos and included a Buffet breakfast for two Then the phone calls started ! Oh sorry sir but the room was 1, 700 pesos (and a free breakfast) I had already paid so I said I would sort it out in the morning. they rang once more that night ! At breakfast 6.00 - 10.00 am we went down at 7.30 - 8.00 am and found that there was no food in the bains, except for a lot of cold rice ! I waited and they brought four eggs which we took and waited and waited for the rest of the food to come. in the mean time I filled up on the fruit, and drank the rest of the fruit juice there. We had plenty of time as it was our holiday and I waited for more food. three more men came in to the restaurant and they waited too. Finally in the end I got up and asked for the supervisor, who came into the room with a very disinterested air. i spoke to him and said that in my experience this was nothing short of disgusting ! I told him that the Bains were not lit, therefore when there was food in them, it would be cold, There was no coffee, no fruit juice (because I had drunk the three glasses left in the container) and we had asked for more food. Not a great deal happened so i went and got the Manager Jerry. I explained that I was a Chef and understood the art of Buffet and that i was not happy. Well he took one look and called the supervisor and they had words, never heard a Pinoy raise his voice and this one did. We went back to the Hotel later that day after eating and travelling through the city. We then had a further conversation with reception, They sent us up the the third floor again and the same room with the twin beds, I hit the roof and then then sent us down to 217 next door to the 219 that we had stayed in before ! So now we were in a new room, and they now had to clean two rooms instead of one ! Yes 219 was not used that next night ! We had words, i paid the 1450 and then we went to breakfast the next day. Well what a change ! Coffee and lots of it, food, well there was a definite improvement.... But still there were empty bains and some of them were not lit ! We checked out soon after breakfast and We left ! Would we stay again, well yes we would but only because of the swimming pool !
Not good place to stay
We'e stayed there for more than a week. Reasons why me and my family hates the hotel because: 1.) When they cooked adobong manok for breakfast, we saw the chicken as hilaw. As in raw food. The outer part looks like cooked just because of the toyo. It still has bloods (color red and black) which means it ain't well cooked. 2.) My nephew got lots of scratches and wounds because their swimming pool has tiles which is already broken. Near the bridge part. (3 ft.) 3.) We went to Butuan for 1 day and we didn't sleep at the gateway hotel. When we got back, the room is already clean and wrapped up. But when we check the blanket, it was never changed. (Because it has stains when we leave and it still has the same stains when we got back.) We ask the staff if they change the blankets, they said yes. Then we ask why does it still have the stains if they really change the beddings. They said that they didn't have enough supply of already washed beddings thats why they didn't change the beddings. They just made it look clean and folded everything that looks like all new. 4.) When we got at the hotel. That was Thursday afternoon. They started the count of checking in Thursday already even we haven't used it. Wherein supposedly the count of it will start by Friday afternoon because we already used the room from Thursday afternoon to Friday afternoon, that serves as 1 day already used. But still they insist. 5.) Paid some unknown bills. (Listed on the bill) 6.) OJT staffs are not well trained in the hotel.
good for surigao standards
As I was here for a forum, I got to see the whole hotel. Yes, it was still undergoing renovations, but I find their renovations slow, as the lobby, toilets, and several others remain partially fixed. What they could have done was to completely fix it by phase, not having an incomplete makeover all over the place. The conference room we had was ok, food was ok, nothing great. Rooms are ok as well, as explained by the other reviews.
Good place to stay in surigao
Stayed hear many times in the past. is currently undergoing a makeover but for the price this hotel is a great choice. management are freindly and helpfull. I will return hopefully soon salamat. located just on the outskirts of the city but everything you need close by.
with swimming pool
We stayed for the weekend & tried this hotel while we're in Surigao City. It happened to be under renovation at the moment. But it shouldn't be the reason why the tiles was not " shiny " upon entering. Anyway, I asked to check their room choices before deciding to pick Executive Matrimonial. The only available was in the 3rd floor and we have to use the stairs (no elevator, said the staff). Inside, it's fine.. only to find out that the CR has no flush (bowl). I tried not to call for a staff to fix it, and just " dig " at the water tank for the hook and connect it :). Overall, we had a good night sleep. Only, I expected more. But maybe after the renovation.. Well, our kid enjoyed the pool and that's what matters for now :).
Flee and rodent infested
After my flight was cancelled and getting stranded in Surigao due to a level 1 typhoon warning, I checked into what appeared to be a nice hotel. Quickly learned the Wifi did not work on the 2nd floor, so I needed to go to the lobby for internet access. Then after returning to my room I needed to contact the front desk due to countless mosquitos swarming the room. Shortly after this, I realized that I was not the only occupant of the room, as I noticed mice running around the baseboards. Again, I called the front desk which brought sticky paper to fix the rodent problem. Although the staff here is wonderful and caring, the hotel is a mess.
Some Improvements But More To Be Done
Well, approaching two years since my previously listed review of the Gateway and with changes afoot I feel it time to post a further review as much for the benefit of the Gateway management, if they actually care that is, as well as the travelling public. Firstly the new restaurant, compared to the old one, is stunning and with new quality furnishings. Alas the décor and furnishings seem all that has improved, I ordered their baby back ribs to be served a cold dish or rib meat that had seemingly been cooked in a frying pan for ten minutes or so, the kitchen staff seemingly having no idea how baby back ribs should be prepared and served. And whilst the new buffet breakfast may seem an improvement under the old (restricted) menu at least us international guests had a choice of bacon or ham served with a choice of eggs, this buffet breakfast is, more often than not, pure Filipino cr@p consisting of such dishes as overcooked (certainly dry) fish, cold egg with vegetables, disgusting sausages containing sugar, other meat imitations and, of course, rice. It does take much to go through the guest registration cards to establish the percentage of international guests that stay and should be catered for.. or is this rocket science? For the first time, in two years, the two person room was actually catered with two tablets of soap and two shampoo sachets, every stay previously it has only been one each of these for two people to share, but alas these were not replenished after the first night of a three night stay, each guest was expected to use 33% of each item per night of the stay and after the 2nd night they didn't replace the towels. Expecting to only stay two night, s and with a 0600 hours ferry to catch the next morning, on the 2nd night I ordered a wake-up call for 0400 hours, it didn't happen and when I arrived downstairs in reception at 0420 hours on the morning of 30 October 2013 it became apparent why, the security guard was slumped asleep across his rostrum whilst the receptionist and one other were sleeping on the guest sofas in the reception area. The receptionist awoke allowing me to settle my account and check-out accordingly. Alas my ferry became cancelled so I re-checked back in an hour later allowing us the opportunity to try again the next morning. Later that evening, on my way to my room, the evening receptionist enquired of me if I had received my wake-up call and I informed him " no " reporting that all the staff had been asleep, he gave me one of those looks and I ordered a wake-up call again for 0400 hours. Well the next morning, 31 October 2013, I received my wake-up call and it wouldn't have been rocket science for the receptionist to realise, based on the previous morning's experience, that I was going to be checking out some 20 minutes later yet when I arrived downstairs, this time, all three staff were asleep on the guest sofas in reception, even the security guard! I waited for around two minutes, admittedly I was still smarting from not receiving the wake-up call the morning before but this receptionist simply didn't care, I waited for around one minute before I left my room key on his receptionist and left... even driving my van away from outside the reception windows. The frightening thing here is that I had walked from the guest bedrooms, I had wandered around the reception area for a minute or more before walking through the unguarded front door and out on to the car park and street so any thug or otherwise undesirable could do the reverse and walk in from the street and make their way to the guest bedrooms... this is posted for the benefit of hotel management to respond to... if they actually care! It was not until 0530, one hour and ten minutes after I left that the receptionist telephoned me obviously having then just woken up to find my room key on his reception. He tried lying and lying to me that he hadn't been asleep etc. etc. etc. until I informed him that I am a hotelier myself and I can see straight through such lies as I regularly do... He then admitted to having been asleep. All in all the Gateway " Ain't all that " but nowhere in Surigao City is " all that ", for the money it isn't so bad but they do need to get this lack of security issue sorted out.
lower in rate compare to other hotels in Surigao
the hotel is located 1 minute away from the airport and 3 minutes to the city proper. there is an existing renovation at the hotel premises the day i checked-in. there was only 1 staff at the reception however in fairness to her she is very accommodating. my room is in 2nd floor, i immediately observed that the hotel is a bit old compare to the other hotels in surigao but its spacious and the rate is cheap compare to other hotels in caraga. the hotel room (superior) needs maintenance and update in everything from bed to comforter to the comfort room however the matrimonial room is quite nice clean and modern that is the reason why i transferred to that room the next day. i had a good night sleep though. the hotel breakfast is in buffet style but unlike that of tavern hotel still in surigao, the choices is limited and the surrounding is not that conducive for eating, maybe because of that time that construction are outside. i noted also the swimming pool below my room window, its quite large with adult and childrens area. i stayed in this hotel for 2 nights.
Stay at the Parkway
Have stayed here before and it was OK - but with the renovations at present its a nightmare. Overpriced for suite at 3000 PHP - view was scaffolding, balcony covered in concrete debris, pool dirty and strewn with building materials - you can watch a health and safety nightmare from your window with the constructions going on - aircon works well - restaurant is excellent - location great to supermarket and airport. payment required in full at start - then when you complain about room - just sorry sir? Wish I had read reviews better rather than relying on previous experience.
Not as bad as reviews suggest but not great
This was our tenth visit. The hotel is undergoing large extensions and the surrounding grounds certainly show it. We were in the suite room which compared to Butuan was certainly over priced. It was however huge and even accommodated our extended family. Amenities in the room were sparse and the air conditioner while good couldn't be adjusted, mind you the temperature to me seemed OK. Dinner in the restaurant was Ok but breakfast was a disaster, my toast was basically bread which had been briefly placed in a toaster and there was no butter or jam. After we complained the next morning everything was fine. The Gateway needs to lift its game with the other hotels in town. It would be a pity to see this hotel which we are fond of go out of business but they need to modernise the rooms. Staff on the overhand were always polite and attentive answering any query.
A hotel with no ELEVATOR but still a nice hotel
Stayed here for 3D / 2N (Nov 29-Dec1), few days before typhoon Pablo unleashed it's fury on this province. First of all, this hotel is very close (5 mins.) to Surigao Airport. Getting here is not a problem, they have free van transfer to / from the airport. We were checked in a standard room because all other rooms were occupied because there was an ongoing seminar / training when we were there. It was ok for us but the unfortunate thing is that all standard rooms are located in the 3rd floor and there was no ELEVATOR at all. First time to encounter a hotel w / o an elevator! hahaha... Room is clean and nice. No problem at all. Air conditioning is good also. Our room balcony had a view of a mountain and the highway intersection below. My kid loves the swimming pool. It's big, clean, has slide and warm water. Though, it is used for swimming lessons for kids early in the morning. Big disappointment because you cannot do an early morning swim / lap if you want to. There is only one Restaurant in the hotel. Food tastes great and not so pricey. It's worth what you paid for. Service staffs are nice. If you want to explore the city, ask for a Surigao map from the receptionists at the front desk. The map contains tourists guide and destinations (where to go and eat). You can just hire a tricycle or a multicab for that on a minimal cost. Overall, we were satisfied during our stay and also enjoyed it though it's tiring to go up and down our room taking the stairs. It's good to have an exercise once in a while.
In need of renovation
This was our ninth visit and only returned as a matter of loyalty and the fact it is conveniently located in Surigao on the highway. The whole place is run down with bathroom fixtures in a bad state of repair. We were in a suite which is large in size and the bed was comfortable and we had a view of the pool. The kids used the pool on the first night only tobe told after jumping in that chemicals had just been added, the sign was on the back wall. The staff had gone for a rest before turning off the flood lights. Price was also quite expensive for what was on offer
The place is a joke
For the benefit of Gateway Hotel, to identify ourselves clearly, we are staying in, supposed, Executive Room 217 for the night of 22 February 2012. First of all there is a significant hotel extension building programme in progress.. something that doesn't get mentioned on their website nor by their reservations personnel. Upon arrival in the room, this is supposedly an Executive Room, it's not tired, it's exhausted in appearance and in need of a top to bottom makeover. Then one is greeted with a sign that the room contains various equipments and if any of these are absent upon check-out then we will be charged for them.. Well straight away my partner obversed that there was no remote control for the TV (as itemised) and I've noticed that there are not the 2 blankets present (as itemised), however it would appear that Filipino executives only sleep with one less than adequate pillow thus we politely requested 2 more pillows for the room only to find ourselves being asked to pay PHP25 per pillow per night!!! We are, or rather we were, booked here again on 26 & 27 February 2012 however that reservation, unsurprisingly, has just been cancelled. Dear Gateway Hotel.. NEVER in some 35 years of globetrotting have I been asked to pay for a pillow for the night, I only live across the water on Siargao Island, I was about to become a regular guest of yours but, as they say, " NEVER AGAIN ".. your place is a joke.
so so
I live in Surigao City, but my parents house is quite far from the airport so we usually stays in gateway. For 3x we stayed there and it's even longer days like 10 -15 days even. I agree to the other reviews, the restaurant atmosphere is not really that good, the rooms to be honest has some mosquitoes even during the day, no elevator. They have swimming pool now and it's soooo full during weekends. The worst thing is every time we checked in there they are always renovating something that's why it's often noisy. Anyways, the service is fine.
