Great service and an attractive restaurant
**Tripadvisor Review:** I recently dined at this charming restaurant and was impressed by the overall experience. The service here is exceptionally friendly, which immediately sets a welcoming tone. The restaurant itself is quite attractive, with a lovely bar that adds to the ambiance. I sampled the lobster and corn chowder, which was excellent_rich, flavorful, and a definite highlight of the meal. I also tried the crab cakes, which I found to be just average; they didn't stand out as much as I had hoped. Despite this, I believe this restaurant is worth a visit. I plan to return soon to explore more of the main dishes, as the atmosphere and service make it a spot worth trying again.
Amazing Lunch at Modern Oyster Bar
Just visited this restaurant yesterday for Lunch! First time visit in new location! Very impressed how the decor and atmosphere feels-much better than the old " Digs " I ordered the Fish & Chips prepared with Chilean Seabass! Absolutely delicious and outstanding!! My wife had a Burger which was equally good and high quality Beef. Service was excellent and very professional! I can only highly recommend this restaurant!! Will be back for sure!
Great happy hour
First time here. Really fun happy hour. Loved my oysters. My wife said the crab cake was really good. Awesome tacos and burger. The service was awesome. Will be back soon. Highly recommend.
I would go again!
This was my second visit and this time was even better than the first. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about their menu and their bar. The raw oyster were killer good. All our entrees were prepared perfectly, and the wine list is extensive.
Great service and food
We shared the French fries, Caesar salad and shrimp cocktail. The fries were crisp, the shrimp perfectly done and jumbo and the salad was perfectly dressed. We ate at the bar and Oscar the bartender was quite attentive and made a great martini. The restaurant was a bit dark for me.
Disappointing
I often enjoy dining at the bar in restaurants. This bar area was very inviting visually though I hesitated because the music was so loud but stayed. Wish I had not. Pretty pricey with a very limited wine by the glass list. Found a nice red blend from Paso Robles for about $20 which was fine. I wasn't particularly hungry so ordered only the crab cake appetizer. Real crab meat? Questionable. Flavorful? No. Dry? Yes. Oh well. Servers were attentive and nice.
Nothing Special
I went with my father and due to his suggestion. He had really enjoyed their old location, both the food and ambiance. They have a new location further north on Scottsdale Road. We sat in the bar area and it wasn't very lively for a Friday night. It really felt like we were in a converted Macaroni Grill and not very Modern at all. The service was good, but the food was very average. We started with the crab cakes, which were a real disappointment given the $24 price for two. My dad liked his fried oysters and I had the Salmon. Mine was good, but not great, nor worth $40 with no sides. We both thought the prices were outrageous given the average quality and sleepy atmosphere. I don't mind paying top dollar for the best of the best, but this was nothing close to justifying their prices. If you want seafood, go to Lure. If you want a steak at this price point, go to Mastro City Hall.
Waiter ruined a great meal
Waiter (Mel) left us waiting all night. Took our order and delivered our check and did nothing in between. Food was very good but delivered by other than Mel. No steak knife with meal. Had to ask someone else for salt which was not on the table. Wanted to order a second cocktail but no one came by to take the order. Wanted to order coffee and dessert but no one offered. Mel was just a lousy waiter. Note to owner, Mel is ruining your name.
Even Better at New Location
The interior of the new location is much better than the old location. It felt warm and inviting. The live music was very good. The food was excellent. We enjoyed the Blue Point oysters and onion soup for appetizers. Mains consisted the steaks and the seared scallops - mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Loaded baked potato was the largest potato I have ever seen! Good wine and apple crumble for dessert. Everything was delicious and service was good. Will be going back.
Watch your wallet
I just came back from this place. Four of us enjoyed happy hour. The drinks and the food were very good. Then came the bill. We gave them two credit cards and asked that they spilt the bill, the amount, pre tip would be about $85 each. The bills were dropped off and reflected $156 each! I waited and then went to the hostess stand which is handled by one of the two owners. I explained my situation to her. She was not receptive. Finally she took the bills and said she would get back to me. Soon after, the person I believe is her significant other / fellow owner came up in a very hostile manner and accused me of verbally assaulting his fellow manager. I asked him what I had said because that was not my intention. His response, " nothing, but your were going to ". Sigh.. Soon after the other manager, whom I supposedly insulted, returned. I asked, " can you please tell me anything I said that was insulting or offensive regarding you? " The response, " nothing as to me, but you said the waiter cheated you. " Ah, yes, It appeared to me that he tried to do just that. BTW I kept the receipts in case this post is challenged.
All Show & No Go
We went there on Friday night with a party of four we had a reservation and we were seated immediately on the patio. The waitress was there to take our drink order and we were served quickly. Our waitress and atmosphere was fantastic. My wife had the salmon and her stomach was upset the rest of the night, I had the cheeseburger and had to ask for extra napkins because the grease was running down both hands. The other couple mentioned their food was so so, Sorry to say we will not return to modern oyster bar chophouse…... Rick
Outstanding!
We went here on Saturday night with a party of 7. We had a reservation and were seated immediately on the patio. The waitress was there to take our drink order and we were served quickly. She was also very fun throughout the meal and available if we needed anything. My spouse had the fried oysters for an appetizer and they were very good. He had steak and mushrooms as an entree and I had the scallops which were excellent. Overall everyone enjoyed their meal and we will definitely return!
You cannot blame it all on COVID
I vaguely remember a Russian restaurant, Sonata, in this location serving caviar and excellent chilled Russian Standard vodka, but being operated rather ineptly, which caused it to go down, as it the rule for any inefficient business. Then the Oysterbar & Chophouse installed itself and it was pretty good last year when I visited. This visit however was very disappointing: with reservation one week ahead of time and plenty of available tables upon our arrival for early dinner, we were stuck on a table by the restrooms. This was only the beginning: our server was never around when you needed him, the French Onion soup was inedible, foie gras was listed on the menu on the WEB site, but the waiter told us they have not had it for a year already, all alcohol prices were much higher than the ones listed on the WEB site. Very disappointing. I wonder if it's the same owners and if yes, they have not learned anything for the Sonata experience.
Packed house
Dinner on a sat night was pack no social distancing but staff does wear gloves and masks. Use of regular menus The food selection is pretty good the staff is knowledgeable and the variety on the menu is good definitely a focus on oysters and a very sizable scotch menu the meal was good we left happy other than the concert and social distancing
AMAZING
Now this place does it right, great atmosphere, service etc. We ordered 3 different types of oysters, grilled, half shell and Rockefeller. They were all delicious! Also, we ordered a ribeye and it was outstanding. The fried chicken was also fantastic. We went twice on our most recent trip to AZ, ask for Denise to be your server, she's really fun! The owner is actively checking on guests as well, which is always nice to see.
Nice environment and the food
Nice environment and the food is good. The main issue we had was the waiter (Remone I think). He try's to up sell on everything- wine, food, etc. He makes the customers feel uncomfortable with his approach.
Vibrant Hip Restaurant
It was restaurant week so we decided to book this little gem. Great ambience and the music was awesome. Staff friendly, food awesome. Great for a date night.
The most arrogant staff... ever
Epic fail. We dine out all around the world and the patio bartenders were arrogant and dismissive if you asked for a simple change to a cocktail. They said " we make the best cocktails in AX, we're not altering them. " Food was ok but needs a lesson in presentation. Very old tasting crab, very expensive by-the oyster oysters and outrageous pricing. We order two appetizers, two drinks (each) for 2 people: $100. If that's what you want, the patio is lovely with a great bar scene. But the bartenders ruined it for us.
Surprising excellent!!!
I must say that I booked a dinner reservation out of necessity and not curiosity. I made a last-minute decision on a Saturday night during the Waste Management Open to have dinner at a very nice high-end restaurant. The two or three that I initially tried were booked during the times that I needed to have dinner. I had a show to attend. When I pulled up to the restaurant I was very skeptical because it is positioned on the end of a strip mall. After parking and getting over this disappointment we entered and was greeted very appropriately. the restaurant was about half full. I attributed this fact to it still being new. The bottom line: I was very happy that we stayed and selected this restaurant for dinner. The food was outstanding most dishes were made from scratch. In particular, the mash potatoes were tremendous. I am not a mash potatoes guy. However, these were probably the best I have had. The steak was very tender and flavorable. Overall, excellent dining experience. The waitress was excellent and the manager stopped by to make sure we were pleased. Excellent experience from a finicky person.
Yummy Dinner
Two of us this evening. First time visit so we decided to sample. First selection were the classic mussels. Delicious. Next we tried the farro and red beet salad. Beautiful presentation and flavor. For an entree we had the scallops over risotto. Perfection. We finished with a creme brulee. With the dessert there was a split opinion. One liked the salted topping and the other did not. The creme brulee itself below the topping was very nice. Excellent service. Delightful decor.

The 4 of us truly enjoyed our visit. We stopped by for drinks and appetizers before moving onto a birthday celebration. Very nice layout inside. Our 1st time here, understand that they have been open for about a year. The oyster on 1 / 2 shell were excellent! Large, tender and fresh! Our friends liked the mussels and crab cakes very much. Our waiter and the entire staff were professional and helpful. just a great night out. Highly Recommended!
Family Night Out
Excellent service and deliscious food! Wonderful service by Kelly and we also enjoyed meeting the co-owner Kat. The Oysters Rockefeller, Foie gras and Mac and Cheese dishes were exceptional. The ambiance and live music was great! We look forward to returning soon.
So much better than Sonata
I was delighted to find a new creation occupying the premises of the short-lived Sonata. Little is left of that ill-fated attempt at a Russian restaurant. What is there now is seriously worth your attention: elegant, great menu, spirits & wine list, superior service, and even live bluegrass music on the weekend. Unfortunately, we've had late lunch, so we settled for something nominal: oysters and bubbly, followed by onion soup. The soup was closer to marmalade than soup, but I put the blame on myself: this would teach me to order soup in a chophouse! Definitely going back to investigate all the attractive options on the menu.
Excellent alternative to chain steakhouses
Went there with my wife and another couple this past Saturday evening; two and half hours later, we finally finished a wonderful evening, no one rushed us. Excellent, attentive service, excellent food and vibe / atmosphere, reasonable prices (for a high end steakhouse). Great food and wine selection
what a great dinner
we went to Modern Oyster on a quiet Sunday night to celebrate my wife's birthday. The restaurant was very quiet, which was nice. Sunday of a holiday weekend. Our server was wonderful. very knowledgeable on the wine list and very helpful in assisting us in finding a nice wine to go with our dinner, which was excellent. Very attentive management as well. Everyone wanted to make sure we were enjoying our evening.
Absolutely outstanding!
Parked in a small commercial plaza with an unobtrusive sign, it's easy to miss this place. But don't! From its understated classy environment, with bar, indoor and patio seating, to live music, you'll be beguiled. And the food is amazing. Lamb chops were perhaps the best I've ever had---tender, perfectly crisp outside with meltingly medium rare inside. Matched with heavenly potatoes gratin -- not to be missed. And, by the way, they make a great old fashioned, too.
Brunch
We were delighted to discover that one of our favorite restaurants now serves brunch. The lobster waffles were unbelievable. Everything we tried was exceptionally delicious. What a great addition to the Scottsdale dining scene. Very swanky beautiful steak and seafood restaurant with outdoor patio, great food and service.

What an incredible experience. The place is absolutely stunning. Not one detail was overlooked in the design and decor. The menu made it difficult to chose, but really makes it just absolutely necessary to come back. I was recommended the Amarone by the glass and it was amazing. The scallops were perfect. We had Blue Points and Kumamotos... I mean how can you not? It's an oyster bar! The butterscotch creme brûlée and key lime pie were... wow. Cannot wait to come back for their upcoming brunch and Sunday Funday and to dive into the menu more!! Beautiful spot to enjoy incredible food and ambiance that makes you feel fabulous without the pretentiousness that can sometimes come with it. 6 / 5 stars all day long.
Very Impressed
Choose this restaurant to celebrate buying our retirement house in the Phoenix area... so glad we did! Amazing service and food. The cocktails were perfect as was the prix fixe menu. The oyster selections were plentiful and they were fresh. We both had the halibut which was cooked perfectly. The key lime pie was sweet and tart and very fresh. The hostess said the recipe was a family secret. Overall, it was a wonderful evening and when we finally move to Az, we will make this a routine stop. Well done!
Excellent!
In my past 3 trips to Phoenix, I have eaten here 5 times. You simply can't find this kind of quality elsewhere. Amazing steaks, oyster bar - the owners are on site, attentive to everything - and how much they care is reflected in the atmosphere. Fun, lively place. Nice patio weather permitting. Don't pass this one up when you're in the area. Save room for the bread pudding. Nothing like it.

Nice Happy Hour
Stopped in for Happy Hour last night and wanted to enjoy the lovely patio... but... it started pouring rain! Not expected in May in Scottsdale. We sat at the indoor bar instead. The house rose was good - large pour - good value. I can recommend the crab cake, the mussels and the homemade tater tots. Do not order the shrimp and crab " cocktail "... so strange... not a good value. Overall this was a good experience. I'd recommend finding more personable bartenders - these guys were very reserved and we had to drag info about the booze and food out of them. We'll be back to try out the outdoor bar and we hope for a little more " pizzazz " from the staff.
Amazing Food!!!
We went to Modern last night for the first time and it was so awesome that I felt compelled to write a review. First off the atmosphere was so inviting, lively, energetic, and fun! My husband had a dozen kusshi oysters which he said were excellent. The beet salad was so good. A perfect balance of greens, beets, farro, and a delicate roasted tomato vinaigrette. I splurged and had the grilled shrimp pasta. It was a homemade lemon pepper pasta with perfectly grilled shrimp with the right amount of char. The pasta dish had a wonderful lemon flavor with lots of zucchini and squash. It was a beautiful summer dish. My husband had the bouillabaisse which had a delicious saffron broth and a huge piece of fish. They had live music and the singer / guitar player was excellent. He performed really fun songs. I had such a great dining experience and cannot wait to go back!
A great find in the Scottsdale / Shea area
Modern Oysterbar Chophouse is a great new restaurant in central Scottsdale. Every Sunday evening they have music and Happy Hour. Aussie Jim was fantastic on the outdoor patio area. Can't wait for next Sunday.
Perfect Celebration
Three of us just experienced the most exceptional and fun dinner at Modern Oysterbar Chophouse tonight. They received 5 star ratings from our group on all categories: food, menu, service, beverages, and environment. This establishment has only been open for about 5 weeks. Yet, everything was impeccable. Three dishes were the best in the valley: the pork belly, the foie gras, and the key lime pie. The steaks were amazing. Actually, everything was amazing. We received the best service from our server, Becky. Even with a multitude of great steakhouses in the Scottsdale area, this is one establishment we will frequent.
Consistantly perfect!
My wife and I live in the area and have been to Modern 4 times, we look at this restaurant as our fine dinning go to. They have consistently outperformed our expectations on service, food quality and overall great experience. The management team are on the floor assuring every table is well taken care of and there are no service our food issues. I would highly recommend this new steak and seafood restaurant to all.
Fun visit
Our first visit to Modern Oysterbar will not be our last. We asked to be seated for Happy Hour and choose a high top table near the kitchen and oyster bar. It was entertaining to watch the action of both. We ordered the bakers dozen oysters, Blue Point, very fresh and delicious. We also tried the calamari and rock shrimp appetizer. It was lightly breaded with a tangy dip which was great. The house wines were to our liking. Our server was excellent! Looked like they had plenty of staff on hand. Spoke with the manager and shared our complements with him. Upscale dining with upscale prices. We will be back when we can enjoy the patio.
New and Great
Happy to live so close to this new venue. The new restaurant has been redone from a former tenant It is very pretty and modern and already has a nice vibe. The patio is very nice. Because it was still a bit chilly we chose what we call an inside outside table - we were inside but right where all the doors to the outside are. It took us a long time to order as there were so many delicious things to choose from. We did have oysters and a mussel and claim dish. We did stuff ourselves on the delicious bread and didn't have room to order some of those delicious mains so we just shared a charcuterie board and more delicious bread. Wine and service was very good. We already have plans to go back with friends. Next time we won't eat so much bread. Highly recommend.
New Restaurant with a Few Glitches To Iron Out
This place has only been open a month. The place is pretty inside with beautiful glassware, very comfortable chairs, and lots of black and gold colors. Outdoor patio seating with heat lamps also available. Attentive, if somewhat nervous waiter. One of the owners came to the table to chat with us. Lobster bisque was good with lobster chunks. Caesar salad was good and plentiful. Oysters Rockefeller were excellent with subtle, fresh flavors. Mixed drinks were made from scratch and expertly concocted. Wine served at proper temperature and tasted good. Scallop dish had a very good risotto with chorizo but scallops were undercooked and had to be sent back to the kitchen. They were returned quite charred on both sides and rather lacking in taste and having a burnt flavor_too overcooked. Music was too loud and interfered with conversation. There was a very long gap between courses and several wrong items were brought to our table. This will probably be a wonderful place to dine when serving and cooking issues are worked out. I would suggest calmer music_perhaps classical guitar.
Recently opened and our 1st Time at this restaurant
Took my GF and I to this restaurant Saturday night for a 6pm reservation. Nicely appointed restaurant. Had a bar and an Oyster Bar as well. Had outside seating but didn't see anyone out there due to the chilly weather. Our waiter was punctual, knowledgeable but let us dine at our own pace and was not pushy. While eating at different times both owners came up and introduced themselves and ask if everything was OK. I also would add I particularly enjoyed the large wine glasses that were on the table. We each started with a Martini and ordered 1 / 2 doz of oysters. Oysters were from three different locations geographically and so we had 2 from each area. Thought that was a nice touch. The oysters were great. Briney and salty and very fresh. Decided to have an order of Oysters Rockefeller which were excellent too. I Ordered a glass of wine which they serve an 8 oz pour that settled in nicely with that big wine glass. GF then ordered a bowl of French Onion soup and I ordered the Lobster Bisque. She liked the FO soup and I thought the lobster bisque could have been a little thicker but there was a substantial amount of lobster pieces. Finished with an espresso and an order of their cheesecake which was quite large. All in all this is a very classy restaurant with the oyster bar. Too bad it isn't closer to where we live. I think the next time we go we'll give the Oyster Bar a try.
An All Around Win and a Shucking good time!
Such an excellent and much needed addition to this part of town! The decor is beautiful and modern, the food is fantastic, and the service is top notch. We sat at the oyster bar which is such an unexpected but very welcome surprise bringing a bit of the Bay Area vibe to Arizona. It's dinner and a show as you watch the guys shuck oysters and build towers with a really nice selection of seafood. They have the popular oysters like Kumamoto's and Blue points and then some lesser known ones which were fun to try and all super tasty. The mussels, shrimp cocktail, cream corn, and foie gras are other not to be missed items, while the bone in filet was cooked perfectly and so tender you could literally cut it with a fork. For dessert we had the bacon french toast bread pudding and the dulce de leche cheesecake. First off, yes you read that correctly, bacon for dessert. Need I say more?! Secondly, if you're looking for a " classic " NY cheesecake, this isn't it, BUT if you're looking to only have one bite of something and then strong-arm your husband out of the way to devour the rest of it because it's THAT good, then yeah, this is the one for you! The wine list is diverse yet approachable with solid priding, and I love the Reidel 001 standard stemware! The owners and staff are very hands on and friendly and for only having been open a couple of weeks they already seem to have it dialed in. Can't wait to go back!
