Great wine tasting at lunch time
A super spot to taste a small variety of Italian styled wine at a very reasonable price $15 or $20. We also loved sitting outside looking at the vineyard whilst listening to Cafe bar piano music. You choose your own food from a chiller cabinet, complimemted with freshly baked large bread rolls, choices of cheeses, salamis, etc, but best we thought was Genevieve's duck patè it went wonderfully well with the Sangiovese wine. Thoroughly recommend.
Heron's Flight, Warkworth
We visited this winery and tasted their wines. They were quite nice and the grounds were well kept. The staff where very knowledgeable.
Lovely red wine
We tasted the red wine at dinner out in Matakana the night before and as in the area we were pleased to visit and purchase same from the vineyard. The sangiovese volare is nicely bodied and smooth. The reserve is divine! And naturally more expensive. We found the owners exceptionally pleasant to talk to and would have liked to linger at another time. We were there to purchase wine. This place is not a restaurant.
Want to taste the difference of oak aged versus amphora
Great stop with a small winemaker who tells you his wine passions and how he is constantly working to make them better. Good source of information for new Zealand newbies On local customs and places to see. Original thinker showing off the greatness of Italian grapes.
A charming vineyard with an affable host!
Heron's Flight is a small family owned vineyard overlooking New Zealand's Matakana valley- famous for its fertile soils and boutique wineries and the only New Zealand vineyard specialising in growing the Italian grape varieties Sangiovese and Dolcetto, grown here since 1993. Grapes were first planted at Heron's Flight Vineyard and Winery in 1987 by David Hoskins and Mary Evans, and our visit with Mary was warm and informative. She and her husband observed a heron which made a home base there, hence the name of the Winery. Together, Mary & David have made wine, raised a family, and run a successful business from the land for over 20 years. Mary is an avid reader, loves E. M. Forster and formerly taught English, whereas David likes to delve in Philosophy. In 2010, the Heron's Flight Restaurant and Vineyard won the coveted Manaakitanga Award for the most Sustainable business in the wider Rodney District. A big part of the game plan was to follow sustainable principles where feasible, using organic methods in the vineyard. No longer do they use herbicides, opting instead for grass and weeds to nurture the soil and encourage biodiversity. Their spray regime uses organic chemicals, more labour intensive, but worth the effort. The wines were all delicious, the Sangiovese 2013 Reserve quite nice.
You'll be surprised
This place sort of seemed hidden away. But we thought we'd walk down the driveway and see what was there and we were pleasantly surprised by the experience. The lady who helped us with the tasting was very pleasant and answered all our dumb questions without making us feel ignorant and while I generally think I dont like Rose' the Rose' produced here is delicious!! So I bought some. And will buy more I think.
Beautiful wines
Heron's Flight has produced exceptional wines from the Italian Sangiovese and Dolcetto but best of all the cellar door for the winery is warm, homey and friendly and the lady of the house there is the same as the wine she produces i. e. leaving you with a warm glow inside after you have drunk it in - wine or hospitality being the same. Their Reserve is worth every cent but we found an exceptional dessert wine 'Bacio Di Rosa' which is like finding liquid gold produced there. Last I heard they only produced 100 bottles last year so get on their mailing list or email and don't weep if you miss it.
Terrible Customer Service
I agree with the previous reviewer. The customer service for this cellar door is appalling. They do not know how to treat potential customers that's for sure. Their website says that wine tasting is free but when I emailed them to confirm this they said, and I quote " Because it is misleading on the website I was going to forego it (the payment), but that wouldn't be a wise commercial decision. " I asked them if perhaps they should remove that from their website to avoid this confusion and the response was " If you only wanted to come because it was free and not because you are interested in wine, you shouldn't bother at all. " My collegues and I are very interested in wine tasting, and in fact we would have probably brought some wine at the cellar door if it was any good. However, with this type of treatment, I will never visit Heron's Flight, especially with their DELIBERATE tactic of luring people in, under the false pretences of a free tasting and then charging people when they arrive. I have nothing against paying for a tasting and in fact this is fair play, but what I do have something against is dishonesty and rudeness.
A real taste of a NZ vineyard
Wonderful hosts - lots of information about this 100% Italian grapes vineyard - the only one in NZ - very authentic - rustic no frills but so gorgeous and quaint - a great place to buy some wine and have a picnic in the vines.
Excellent Grape Juice
Bought Grape Juice direct from the winery. Excellent flavour especially their new lighter variety with a touch of bubbles.
Drive straight past Runner Duck and go here instead!
This place is tucked behind Runner Duck and easy to miss, but make the effort and get down there. The owner is experienced and knowledgeable and passionate about his wine. The wine tasting is a proper experience and afterwards you'll want to buy everything! We did. Best cellar door tasting in Matakana!
Yummy
Good food, good wine, nice ambiance - would highly recommend the grape juice! A great place to meet and hang out with friends.
great wines and gorgeous setting
Herons Flight was a surprise find - the setting is beautiful and the Italian style wines very tasty and easy to drink. The staff were most helpful and friendly and made us feel welcome without rushing. The outlook from the deck is beautiful and the cellar door is quirky. Lots of books and a couch to lie on if you have had too much vino!
A hidden gem in Matakana
We didn't enjoy the full range of what this restauarant has to offer, due to time constraints. However, if the winemaker David puts as much effort into the restaurant as he does into the wines, then it will be spectcular. We were very impressed with the wines on offer - Heron's Flight deals exclusively in Italian grapes - San Giovese and Dolcetto. A beautiful location with stunning views over the ridiculously green rolling hills.
Excellente adresse
