Old boat moored on the lake excellent spot
Excellent as always…I think the website is now " the boat " north bay…I found some confusion searching for it online…some pages came up saying it was closed…never fear, I get to the bottom of things…I made reservations for 9 people…it was on a crazy hot evening, but the staff accomadated our large table with shade umbrellas…food was great again…just go and enjoy the atmosphere as that's what it's all about👌👌 We have been going once a year for decades…our son enjoys it so much, he talked it up and most of the team (snowbirds) went the next night👌👌 You should keep a guest book😳😳
Great Place to Go
The food is great and the location is amazing. It is a summer location and right on the waterfront. The location is beautiful and would be a great visit for friends and family.
Nice atmosphere! Good food!
Very nice atmosphere with a great view of the water, good service as well as the food and drinks, nice place to eat in warm weather
great idea for a restaurant
This in an old ship that cruised the lake and river many years ago and has ben converted to a waterfront restaurant. Perfect location... a few blocks from downtown. Awesome fish and chips..... and a great place for a cold drink and a snack on a hot day. A bit pricey if you go for dinner but midrange otherwise. It is a great place for pictures along the lakeshore
Good food, great service, amazing view!!
You gotta eat here!!! Food is great, view is amazing and the service is excellent. I have been there a few times, for dinner and lunch and was very happy each time.
Big boat ride
Nice boat tour of lake Nipissing and small islands with live onboard narrative by the boats captain. Round trip of about 1, 5 hours. Good for all ages Outer and inside deck areas for all round viewing. Food and alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages available on board. Captain and crew are wonderful
No better place to have a beverage by the lake
This is a true gem of North Bay! You simply must visit this casual restaurant by the lake if you plan to visit North Bay in the summer. In my opinion, this is the best place to view the lake while enjoying a beverage & light meal. I loved it so much that I would come down and read my book as the world scurried around me. The prices are reasonable, the food quality is average at best and the service is somewhat slow to disinterested but the view is incredible and the beer always cold. Warning: if you are allergic to Wasps; bring an Epi-pen, they are everywhere!
Great Summer Place to eat!
Loved it here.. with the boat right on the shore, excellent view and food was great as well.. Nice cold draft beer on a hot day was a bonus! Great menu.. excellent prices!
Nice place, friendly staff
Pleasantly surprised this year. We hadn't visited this seasonal restaurant in a couple of years, but had been hearing good comments about it last year so we decided to give it a try again. The waitress was prompt, polite and a bright smile. I had a Caesar, which was very good and well prepared, served in a preserve jar which gave it an extra +. The food was excellent and the service impeccable. I would recommend this eatery to anybody.
Seasonal delight
The Boat is an excellent choice if you want to relax on the water and enjoy the sights and nature. Quiet, pleasant meal experience, but make sure it's not too breezy or cold or rainy. Great on a sunny day or a pleasant warm evening.
Great cruise on a hot day
Worth a trip to see the mouth of the French River, a refreshing way to tour the north. Great to have this resource in our community for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Great food, TERRIBLE service
Had an absolutely terrible experience at The Boat restaurant the other week and never intend on returning. When me and my partner arrived, the patio wasn't busy at all however it took them ages to notice us and get a server to us. Although that was completely forgivable- even getting drinks / ordering took quite a long time. I ordered the goat's cheese salad without the goats cheese (as I am severely lactose intolerant) - I distinctly remember ordering it and laughing about how silly it sounded to be ordering the salad without it's signature goats cheese. However when our food arrived, so did the salad, covered in goats cheese. This was a common mistake and we flagged down the nearest waitress and she promptly and cheerfully returned it to the kitchen. Shortly after, our waitress returned to the table- placed the salad down and said " heres your salad " and walked away in a huff. I was a tid bit shocked to see her act that way toward a customer but chalked it up to her being tired or having a bad day. Later she returned to our table, still visibly upset and informed us that " because they had to throw out the salad at the back I would be charged for two goats cheese salads ". We told her this wasn't acceptable because the 1st salad had arrived not as we had ordered it. Now instead of just leaving it, our waitress decided TO ARGUE WITH US. She said " well I think I would have heard you say it.... i think I would have remembered ". I was shocked and embarrassed to be spoken to like that, and I was even more appalled that I had to defend myself against her essentially calling me a liar. She ended up fixing the issue after we told her under no circumstances we would be paying for two salads and even offered to speak to her manager. She came back with our bill and gave us the silent treatment while we paid (no tip) and left. How a server can get away with acting like a prepubescent teenager is beyond me- and how, even if she was certain she didn't hear me order goats cheese (which I 100% did because we had a chuckle about it- and I literally would have had my throat swell up if I hadn't) there is still NO way a server should speak to her customers like children. If the owner is reading this review and wants to know which one of his servers he should be having a chat with- just ask the cook about the goats cheese salad he had to throw out. Have been a huge fan of the boat in the past but will NOT be returning and also will be advising family and friends to do the same- as I was shocked at the clear lack of training this waitress had and her sheer lack of common sense and rudeness. Terrible experience. However the food was, as always, great.
Nice way to enjoy lunch or dinner
It's always nice to sit out on the boat for either a drink or a bit to eat. It's always busy. The staff is friendly and the food is good. Decent prices.
Sunset views on Lake Nipissing
Stopped in for a glass of wine after a long day of adventure. We were immediately seated outside on the rail, with an excellent view of Lake Nipissing. Our server was there quite quickly to take our order, and he was easy going and professional in his manner. We opted for a half litre of the house white, which was a Beringer. Excellent choice, and even better value. We ordered a plank bread, with vegetarian toppings to nibble on. Again, we found it a very good choice. Service was excellent. We commented to the server that we very much appreciated him leaving us on our own, and he indicated he got that 'vibe' from us. The view from the deck was awesome. We were fortunate enough to see the sunset in all its glory, after which we went for a short stroll on the waterfront. A great place to drop in and have a nice glass of wine, and by the number of families there, it caters to all ages.
Nice view, horrible food
They try to be cuisine type food, but terribly fall short. First, I had fish tacos, flavours are all wrong. And for $12, I was finished in 6 bites. My daughter had the BBQ chicken wrap, it was chicken breast that someone literally dumped Kraft BBQ sauce on, and alot of it. It was quite disgusting. My son had a very simple kids pizza, not hard to screw up right? Wrong, pretty sure the sauce was from a can. Prices were ridiculous for where it was and what we had. That plus 2 lemonade and chocolate milk was $50. Not impressed.
The Old Docked Commanda I
We had a delicious pickerel lunch on the old Commanda and recommend it if you like fish. We were there on a rainy day and ate inside but it also has an outside grill and a patio that runs almost around the boat.
Ship's Experience without the motion of the ocean. Plentiful free parking. Gorgeous scenery. Nearby attractions
This is a regionally historic ship. It had been in operation on Lake Nipissing until decommissioned and replaced by the Chief Commanda II (See separate review). This is a wonderful venue and interesting experience. Although the ship is on the waterfront, it lies on solid ground, so no motion if you were worried. Food is average fare, but the view of Lake Nipissing and the Waterfront is gorgeous. In nice weather, take a table on the aft deck and feel the gentle lake breeze, In inclement weather, dine inside. You still have a view and can watch as Lake Nipissing turns angry in a West Wind. The ship is interesting to explore. Plentiful free parking nearby or come by boat and dock at the adjacent Municipal Marina. Also, you can walk to the Carousel, train ride, public swimming / sunning beach, the marina.
The Place to Dine Out with Your Dog :)
Having taken the dog along North Bay's wonderful waterfront walk, and contemplating what takeout food we would bring back to the hotel room, I stuck my head in the door at the Chief Commanda No 1 and after explaining we had a puppy, the waitress said, " no problem " we could eat in their picnic bench area and they would bring the dog a bowl of water... we were sold! Friendly and accommodating staff, a lovely late spring evening, excellent pickerel fish and chips and draft beer and a very large bowl of water... if you are traveling with a dog and want to dine out, this is the place! And they have an indoor restaurant and outside patio for diners without dogs!
Worst fried fish ever!
Someone needs to sit down with the chef and discuss what beer batter is... And frankly you shouldn't have to tell them to use BEER. The coating on the tiny fillet was akin too deep fried shoe leather. Frankly I have up half way through because I was afraid of breaking a tooth. The French fries are really dark and oily... If a teenage boy won't eat them... Please do not try the coleslaw... Tarter sauce was fab and the pop was cold. Sweet waitresses and while I appreciate the discount for the horrible meal I am embraced that I actually could not lie and say the meal was good like we all do from time to time..
Best Fish and Chips.
The restaurant is situated on the old cruise boat in North Bay, which as been beached. Their version of fish and chips made with pickerel and home fries, were some of the best we've ever tasted. The only downside was the tartar sauce, which did not seem homemade. This is the perfect place for lunch, just before you go on the Chief Commanda 2 for your lake cruise!
The service has set sail
Went in for appetizer and a drink. The outdoor patio was not busy and there was lots of staff mulling around, but it still took 15 minutes for anyone to come and take our drink order and bring menus. The lobster / shrimp bisque was really good but the jerk paddle flatbread was average. Service really misses the mark!
Fantastic!
Who ever the new owners or mangers are they deserve a huge Thank You! The place hasnt look so good. We were there three times so far this summer and will be back as many times as possible. The food is now unreal! Try the paddle breads and their fish is out of this world and huge! We have dined beside the lake and upstairs the top deck looks great with new floors and table cloths ! It certainly did not look like this two years ago ! Well done folks, thanks for taking pride in your business. Be back soon!
won't be back
We ordered a beverage before deciding what we were going to eat. Had to ask the waitress to clean the table. She finally came and with our beverages and wiped the table around the beverages, spilling them... One glass was cracked and as the waitress never came back we had to it into the restaurant ourselves. There were no apologies. As people were not finishing their food, we decided not to order anything, especially with the prices they were asking. Washrooms were dirty and they had no paper towels. Our waitress was one of the worst and needs to find a job that she can handle.
Extremely Disappointed
I ordered the pickerel dinner. The batter was hard and I was unable to eat a bite of fish with the batter on it. When I removed the batter from the fish it was pink. The waitress came over and I voiced my concern. I did not have an appetite to eat anything else. When the bill came we were charged for that entire meal ($18.50), no accommodation made. Extremely disappointed and disgusted. Poor quality food and over priced!!
High Five
We were hungry after spending a day on the trail and on the beach, so we were craving for fish and chips. We didn't know North Bay at all so after leaving beach we ask for some place to eat. Suprice! Some nice fellow at the park pointed at Chief. It was delicious, fish was perfect, fries looked like home made and both salads!.. we were liking our fingers, and the VIEW! The waiter was so nice, helpful and was running like torpedo between our tables (maybe not a good example, we were on the boat) :) High Five, we will be back.
Save your money
We were super excited to go eat on the chief commanda 1. As soon as we walked in we were seated and the table was filthy, our waitress was rude and didnt ask us for drinks for over 15min. Once we ordered our food it was another 15 min wait. My bf ordered a turkey burger which was dousted in nasty sauce and was equal to a McDonald's burger. I had chicken which wasent too bad but ketchup tasted like gross old over fermented wine. Bottom line: save your money and go enjoy real food!
Ten for lunch!
We had a nice experience.. super hot day, the waitress found us an extra umbrella, she was fast & efficient. Everyone loved their meals (prices were great). Ten for lunch..$156.00.. including 7 cocktails.. can't beat it! We would go back!!
It's a shame
Let me start by saying that I understand how difficult it is to run an outdoor restaurant in the fickle weather of northern Ontario...... however it is lucky that the profits come mostly from the evening bar crowd, because the food is overpriced and sadly lacking. I had the PLT, short for Pickerel, lettuce. and tomato and it was basically a bad imitation of a fish taco and mostly inedible, My friend had a $12 salad that was overdressed and undersized. It's such a great patio, I wish someone would do a good job on the food and not just relay on beer sales to keep them going.
The Menu has changed but you can still get fish and chips
Eating at the Chief Commanda 1 on the dock in North Bay is a ritual for us. There is a new menu with Panini bread items, slads and more. For us it's gotta be fish 'n chips. The freshest of fresh pickerel - could have swum onto the plate - and really good chips with a fresh coleslaws - was just what we wanted. On a hot day, eating under an umbrella right at the edge of a dock with a light breeze blowing off the lake makes supper perfect. There's a small selection of beers and a short wine list to complement the meal. The wait staff are attentive and friendly.
The Boat is under new Management in 2013 and well worth a visit
My wife and 9 friends had an absolutely wonderful evening at The Boat, which is the old Chief Commanda I boat which is permanently docked at the beautiful North Bay Waterfront right next to Marina. My wife had a delicious fresh pickerel (walleye) dinner with fantastic onion rings. Jerk chicken was also terrific. Terrific service by Christine was superb, she arrived with 10 ice waters upon arrival and superb service all evening. Meals were delivered piping hot within 20 minutes of ordering. Ladies go to a different dining spot each week and all agreed that they will definitely be returning to The Boat. They sat outside on the patio deck on a very hot evening but enjoyed the breezes. They went across Memorial Drive for a ride on the mini steam train and the two beautiful carousels.
Chief
The last time I went there the food was just terrible. Overly priced as well. I hear they have a new chef there now so I may go back and try it out someday. Until then, I stay away from that place.
Awful
We got there and the place was packed, so we said " Oh good, the new management must be ok! ". We found an empty table. 20 minutes later, we left as the waitress had not even gotten to our table yet. Oh well.
Beer on the pier!!!
Here recently for dinner, basically restaurant built around an old ferry boat, outside seating on the water. Pub style menu or fresh pickerel special, prices very reasonable, bucket of beers special was great in the heat. Nice view, good service, smoking area to the one side. lots of fun... would go back. right on waterfront park area.
Food was terrible, I would recommend skipping the dinner
The food was terrible on the dinner cruise, it is overpriced for the quality The brocolli was yellow and should have been thrown out a week before, the food was dry and tasteless, The servers were very pleasant, knowing they were serving terrible food must be very trying I would not recommend the dinner cruise, overpriced and the dining room isnot very nice
Dirty, Dirty, Dirty
I can't be leave this place serves food, It should be closed. the only thing I can say is the server was very nice.
