Overpriced average food
Very disappointed! Food did not have flavor. Was overpriced for the value of food received. Service was good and atmosphere was pleasant. Was just expecting much more in the way of the quality of my meal.
Besties Holiday!
Fantastic service and excellent food! We enjoyed the cocktails, augratin potatoes, and of course the steaks. I love that we had a top tier experience where we could get fancy and celebrate our 25 year friendship.
Waste of time and money. If they didn't hand out comps to high roller they wouldn't have customers
Overpriced food prepared by minimal experienced cooks not qualified chefs. Being familiar with this restaurant having been invited multiple times. Food is continuously mediocre and not impressive.
Great view of Ohio river
A bit over priced for what you get. I had the Ribeye with salad and baked potato. My wife had fish with salad and potato. The service was above average but not exceptional. The meal was well prepared and presented. Probably won't go back. The setting / view is one of the best in Evansville.
Not what I thought
My husband and I wanted to tried something different and elegant. Which is a little difficult to find in the area. So decided to go here for a couple's night out. We order a soup when it arrived it was cold. My steak was dry, and had no flavor. So was my husband's steak. The atmosphere was nice until the piano player started to sing. The price for a meal is too much for the value and no flavor. Never again!
Superb
We had our anniversary dinner here on 9 / 10 / 22. The food was fresh and very good. I had the seafood pasta and my husband had the twin lobsters. Service was top of the line. We will definitely return.
NOT WORTH THE MONEY - HAD BETTER MEAL AT THE LONG HORN!
Jan 7th, 2021: Had the filet, tasteless. My son had the NY strip - tasteless. Dinner was supposed to be college graduation celebration - what a disappointment. Not sure how this place received 4 or 5 stars from anyone. Just because it's over-priced doesn't mean the food or service is quality. Crab cakes just ok, sauce was bland. Spend half the money - go to Long Horn and get better steaks, better sides and better bread & drinks and get more food too! This place is a joke!
Sadly Disappointing
We do not have many nice restaurants in our area so, for special occasions we are more than willing to make the hour long drive to Evansville for a nice, peaceful meal. I took my husband for his birthday this year and it was so disappointing. We did not enjoy one thing about the meal except the view!!! The food has ALWAYS been excellent and we have been going for several years. We did bring a piece of carrot cake home for dessert and I have to admit that it was the best carrot cake that we have ever eaten. I don't know if we will be going back anytime soon but if we do, I sure hope it is better. Our server was very nice and we really enjoyed chatting with her. When you drop over $200.00 you expect a little better quality. An example would be that my asparagus tasted like it had been boiled for an hour. I always order it as my side and could not believe the way that it was cooked this time. We both had a filet and they were very disappointing also.
The food is great- it is the
The food is great- it is the best steakhouse around The ambience is awesome- but social distance makes it seem not too loud The service is amazing The view is incredible The bread was great Steak and sea food was impressive The price - be advised to review before you go
Special night out
Back for a visit and wanted a nice night out as places of this caliber do not exist where we live. We were not disappointed. Wife and I shared a shrimp cocktail appetizer. Very well prepared. Wife had King crab legs while I had the filet and Lobster. Wife said crab legs were perfect. My steak and Lobster were both excellent as well..... seasoned and cooked to perfection. Chocolate Martini's for dessert all while enjoying a beautiful sunset over the Ohio river. Our server could have been a bit more attentive, but for the most part did a satisfactory job. We will definitely go again on our next trip back.
Cavvanaughs Steakhouse
This is the best Steakhouse ever. They are always spot on from the most perfect meals to the very best server (Serge) is so Awesome he has been our server for years now. He is so polite and always gives us a great experience. The manager (Gurai) is so nice and always and accommodating. Thanks also to Ms. Ann for making us smile and everyone making our experience perfect.
Very Expensive Overcharge! BEWARE!!!
I had a birthday dinner there for a party of six on July 19, 2019, at a cost of $348.23. I signed the check and added a $60.00 tip which I thought was fair value for the service and meal. Instead of adding the $60.00 onto the check, someone went back and charged my credit card $348.23 a second time. When I returned to my hometown, I opened my charge app to discover I was charged twice. Then I called Cavanaughs and found they are not open on a Sunday or Monday, so I called the Tropicana since it is a casino restaurant. I was told the restaurant wasn't open but she would connect me to the food and beverage manager. Then someone answered the phone at the number she transferred me to and hung up on me when I said I was calling about a problem I had with Cavanaughs. So, next I went to the casino's contact us form, filled out the lines for name, address, phone, and described the issue which I was asking them to correct. At the end I was met with a recaptcha block asking me to pick out stoplights. The first time I clicked on one the entire display of pictures went blank and locked up. I cleared the screen, and tried two more times with the same result. So, I called my bank that told me the $348.23 had been authorized but I would have to wait for posting to contest the charge. In total now I have spent about an hour trying to correct an overcharge and couldn't even get anybody to listen. For me, part of the dining experience is not only the food, but the service. When I left a sixty dollar tip, I actually thought I was being very kind given the meal that was served. Now, I am basking in the heartburn of trying to get them to correct their mistake. I can't recommend this restaurant because I would not want to inflict this kind of aggravation on other dinners.
omg loved it
so elegant. Meat was so tender. salad was huge we had to share it. staff was fab. menus light up. so cool.
Very good experience!
My hat is off to Cavanaugh's for the great evening. The food was delicious and the price was right. I had a prime rib with mashed potatoes. Fried calamari for the appetizer. All was fantastic! I would highly recommend this place to all who love great food. It was very clean, the service was fast and staff was friendly. I will be back next time I'm in the area!
Big Disappointment
This is the first time I've ever written a review of any kind. I was in town for my grandson's graduation from USI along with family and was very excited to hear we where going to have our dinner at Cavanaughs. Terribly disappointed. The steak was tough and had and a pungent taste. I fixed my wife and I steaks on the grill last week and it was 10 times better than what we got here!!!
Hoping for a Fine Dining expereience, and we were not disappointed!
My wife and I have never been to Evansville, In. and we had no idea of where to go for a special dinner night out. Our hotel suggested Cavanaughs. It was a short 10 minute drive and we easily found a great parking place in the Casino parking garage. From the minute we entered the restaurant, we were treated like " special " guest. The hostess, the waitress, the atmosphere were just great. We both ordered different steaks, both filets. They were cooked perfectly. My steak was at least 2 inches thick and I believe you could have cut it using a plastic fork. It was so tender and the flavor was wonderful also. My wife's steak was just as tender. We shared a slice of carrot cake for dessert. Awesome! Was the meal pricey? Yes. Was it worth it? YES. Great meal, great experience. Loved it.
Mediocre at best
Let me preface this review by saying the wait staff, specifically Colin, was incredible. Very friendly and accommodating. The cocktails were very lacking. Worst old fashioned ever. For the price we were very disappointed. The pork chop was good but all the vegetables were not hot... barely warm. Those who had the steaks said they were okay, but definitely not the best they've had... again for the money we expected better. Don't think we will be going back
Overpriced riverview
Food is good, but expensive. Service does not match the prices. View is nice, and you need to specify window with riverview with your reservation, or you won't get that. We promised a relative a great view, but they would not seat us at a window view of the Ohio River because we did not specify. Not happy about that b / c there were some window tables open the whole time which were apparently saved for no-show high-rollers.
Great food and great service
I haven't eaten at a lot of places in Evansville... but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food at Cavanaughs. Its pretty upscale place with nice views of the river. I ordered a filet and was very pleased with the steak. Next time I'm in town and have folks to entertain, I'll take them there.
Music
Come for the great food and wine and great service but the two ladies who sang and played piano and guitar likely made me stay too long and spend more money!!! Food is yummy but you can always find good food... we look for extra benefits like the view of the river and that wonderful live duo! SMART biz decision... not sure if they are here every night but cool they actually play behind the bar!
Yummy carrot cake, good food
I've eaten here several times and the food and service are very good. Food is ala carte. Steaks are around $50 and up, with sides around $8-10 each. The steak is usually very good, as is their bread with garlic and butter. The manager is nice and accommodating. My favorite thing here is their carrot cake. I think it's around $10, but it's a very big piece. So good. Their martinis are around $10. You have views of the river and sunsets at many of their tables. There's also a piano bar if you just want to relax with a beverage.
Nice, calming atmosphere
We have eaten here a few times and really enjoy the calm, relaxing atmosphere. The food and service were as you would expect from a pricier restaurant in the Evansville area. Cavanaugh's is one of Evansville's nicer establishments.
Great time @ Cavanughs
The Management and Staff was the best ever. This was the second time my wife and I experienced it. The server was courtesy and very prompt did not have to ask for anything. And when it came to the bill, everything was covered by the ticket we had. Will be coming back to eat there soon
Beautiful view
Food was ok but not worth what we paid for it. Restaurant was pretty empty. We had to ask several times just to be able to find it due to lack of signage.
Great Food / Great Service!
Had dinner on a busy Saturday night. Food and service were very, very good. Tried the seafood and steaks. Both were very good.
Great Evening
What a way to unwind with dinner and drinks after a day of shopping, site-seeing and gambling at Cavanaughs. We have been several times and each time the service and food are always excellent.
Evansville's Best for Fine Dining
From the call to reserve a table, to the finishing off our dessert, our experience at Cavanaugh's was excellent. Upon reserving, I was asked the occasion. Per request, we were seated by the window, overlooking the river. Our dining began with crab cakes and Ahi tuna as appetizers. The entrees of steak, salmon, scallops, and scampi were delicious, and our server, Collin, was attentive. The carrot cake we chose from the dessert trolley was huge! We easily shared it, whilst drinking coffee. Such a wonderful restaurant and staff; do nice to have a place in town worth dressing up for.
Great views, good service, average at best food
well shoot. I hate to write a less than good review but maybe Cavanaughs will take it to heart and work on the food. Ate dinner here while visiting this area for business. the view of the Ohio River is fantastic, the décor is nice, the service was attentive and very nice, no issues there. The food... was not great. Had a bone-in ribeye with béarnaise sauce and asparagus with hollandaise. BOTH sauces were cold, barely room temp and were gloppy / terrible. The steak was cooked properly but also cold when it got to the table. The steak was ok-not-great and for the price, should have been great. I gave up there... no dessert for me, thanks. You have such a great location, hope you can focus on the food moving forward, fix the sauces, get the food to table hot, and serve a better steak.
Excellent!!
Just visited Cavanaughs for the first time in a few years. Excellent service. great view. Excellent food. We won't stay away so long this time.
Dinner Out
Had a wonderful relaxing evening with my wife here at Cavanaughs. It was recommended to us by the dest at the Double Tree as one of the better restaurants in Evansville and it lived up to that billing. I had the salmon cedar plank at it was outstanding. Moist on the inside, and a wonderful crisps exterior. My wife had the fillet and it too was cooked to perfection. Wonderful taste, tenderness and just enough pink on the inside to give that texture and flavor you desire. Service was outstanding. Always there when needed; but absent when not needed! When you go there for the first time, it is a bit confusing to find. You park on the opposite side of the street at the Tropicana Casino parking lot and walk across a skybridge, through the Casino to get to the restaurant. This is NOT a casino restaurant however. I highly recommend Cavanughs... go and enjoy!
OK
Usually a good meal. Not sure what happened tonight. Pork chop was Pittsburgh well and took too long. I am not one to give poor reviews but for $40 food should be cooked correctly. Still like eating here. Piano is nice.
Classy!
Delicious food with great cocktails and a beautiful view. The staff is very professional and well educated on fine dining.
Excellent Food Only Surpassed By Attentive Service & River View
On our recent visit we were pleased when we were seated promptly at a table with a great river view at sunset. And it got better. Our server, JoAnn, promptly provided menus & details of specials. Every course was well presented & served promptly. My husband's filet was so delicious that he didn't use A-1 sauce, which is rare for him. My pork chop was equally tasty & tender. A special anniversary deserves a special dinner, complete with complimentary desserts, right? We certainly hit the jackpot with this meal, even if we weren't so lucky in the casino.
The best dining expierence in Evansville!!!
Mike is the server you need to ask for! By far this is the best dining in Evansville. The staff is an awesome team that is willing to help each other which makes your dining experience as customer wonderful!! The bar also offers a wonderful flavor and you will enjoy the piano bar!!! They do a excellent job!!! Scotty G
Spend Your Money at a Place That Cares
Well, we had dinner on Christmas Day, so the restaurant deserves more than one star just for staying open for travelers. But that is the only positive thing about dinner at Cavanaugh's. First, they didn't have a bottle of sparkling water - ok not a biggie. Then they didn't have the bottle of wine we ordered. Also happens. The caesar salad was way underdressed - it tasted like undressed romaine lettuce. And the steaks - mostly $40 to $50 - were average at best. Then to top it off, they charged us both for the bottle of wine we drank and the bottle we ordered (but they didn't have). As I said above, save your money and go elsewhere. Make this restaurant improve it service and the food quality. For the money, you'll do better almost anywhere else.
Very disappointing
The good: 1. Prime filet was solid... good flavor, very tender. 2. Baked potato was ok... hard to screw that up. 3. Bread is good. The bad: 1. Caesar salad... they don't even try... throw some green in a bowl and dump in some shaved parmesan... I had it chemically tested and did find a TRACE of dressing : ( 2. French fries... pretty sure they went to Rally's to get them. 17 year boy wouldn't eat them. The UGLY: 1. Alaskan King Crab... smelled the FISHY smell before they even got to the table. It was borderline gross... we couldn't finish... they did credit a small part of that order on our bill. 2. SERVICE... I think we drew the short straw here... we did see other waiters who appeared to be doing a good job. Ours was terrible... bad attitude, non-attentive, just really didn't want to be there. I wonder if he thinks his foreign accent is so charming that he can just be terrible at his job and get away with it. We tipped normal because its Christmas, but wanted to leave nothing. 3. Atmosphere... drunk chic at piano bar screaming, I mean singing, so loud we could hear her at the tables by the windows. I thought it was New Years Eve not Christmas Eve. I don't mind paying $400 for a meal... but this was just not worth it. I wish we would have gone to Texas Roadhouse and gambled the difference!
Nice river views
Went for dinner on a Friday. Started with the Caprise salad. Great tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, not too big, delicious. A strip steak, medium rare. Cooked to perfection. Cooked garlic in olive oil for the fresh bread, very nice. The unexpected star of the show. Creamed spinach. Recommend by the waitress. The best hands down. Must try it. Staff was friendly and the piano in the bar set the mood. Definitely worth a visit.
Great dining experience!
Dining at Cavanaughs was a great experience. We were seated promptly and the service was very good. We were given an appetizer when our steak was not cooked as requested. Our food was excellent. Overall our meal was fantastic. We highly recommend Cavanaughs.
The food was terrible!
We went there for a special occasion, we had read great reviews and heard from others that they really liked Cavanaugh's. We were completely disappointed. Every dish starting with the soup, had so much salt in it that we had to send it back, it was literally inedible. Next, they brought out caesar salads that tasted like vinegar. There were 4 of us and we all had the same reaction. Then the main courses..... the bone-in ribeye looked like it was leftover from lunch, the seared tuna was crusted with salt, and the prime rib which was ordered med-well was burned. One brave soul actually ordered dessert, I guess because they were still so hungry and it tasted like it had expired the week before. What can I say? It was a disaster and at those prices, we will not go back.
One of the best restaurants in Evansville
This is a great place on the water in Evansville. Came here with friends looking for a good steak dinner. We are all from NJ / NY area so we have eaten at many of the more famous steakhouses like RuthChris, Peter Lugers, Morton's, Palms, and Smith & Wollensky. Cavanaugh's may not have the panache of the above mentioned steakhouses, but they do deliver in terms of quality of food, ambience, and service. They cooked our steaks a perfect rare, which is a hallmark of a great grill master. In addition, our appetizers, side dishes, and desserts were perfect. Even the cornmeal bread, served with roasted garlic... amazing. Our server was attentive, and offered much insight. Overall, I would highly recommend.
Relaxing bite after long day of business
In town on business, I decide to try Cavanaughs on the recommendation of the hotel staff. Was very pleased with my meal, the mahi was a tad salty but I'm from Florida so I am used to fresh; still, a strong contender. Beautiful plate presentation. Full service bar means I got to enjoy my meal whilst enjoying conversation of patrons and bartenders and a decent glass of wine. If I come back to Evansville for work I'll return to this establishment.
Nice steak house at casino
Nice restaurant at the casino across the road from the river... we had a table with a great view. Our food and service was great.
Good food but not a quick meal
We were at a conference and friends decided to try Cavanaugh for dinner. The is white tablecloth and they play piano music (actual piano player) while you dine. This is located at the Tropicana. We had a variety of meals prime rib, filets and some made their own combinations. The lobster macaroni and cheese was wonderful as was the crab cakes. The prime rib had good flavor but was cold. The manager did take care of this by buying the 8 of us with dessert, which I thought was a nice gesture. There is a view of the river and it is a very nice atmosphere. We were there for nearly 3 hours which was fine for us because we were catching up with friends but do not plan to be in a hurry.
Great river view
Business dinner for a group of 8. We were seated and then moved again to be closer to the view. Items are al a carte and sides are big and could be shared. Great bar selection and fabulous desserts!
Thank you for such a wonderful time
food, service, and entertainment were all excellent. Their wine selection is quite diverse and the hospitality is very welcoming
Fabulous!
The atmosphere is beautiful with the Ohio River in the background. The staff are always cheerfully and efficient. The food and drinks are amazing! On Wednesdays, the Honey Vines play beautiful music at the baby grand piano.
Fine dining reasonable
Steak have been excellent, sides are ok, salads and house made dressings great, bread is not as good as previous, fish dishes are off the chain good, deserts will make you slap your behind and pretend your riding horse yelling gitti up ye haw. Drinks are made well by excellent bartenders. They have a great alcohol selection. Crab legs are cracked open for you when brought to table. Meat inside is as big as hot dog. Definitely worth checking out.
Cavanaughs Again
Nice greeting and fast seating at our favourite window overlooking the river, fast and attentive serving by server Collin, nice fried crab cakes to start followed by wedge salad. Wife had great Scottish salmon and I had special of the day seafood. Both had enormous baked to perfection potatoes and shared a side of mushrooms. Nice cabernet wine throughout. No room for dessert. We will return.
great food
Service was excellent. Food was so good. Food looked great and fancy. Pricey though. Expect $60 to 75 dollars a person. Room was beautiful and very clean.
Overpriced, Long wait, Average food
We were nearly the only table there between lunch and dinner time. Waited over an hour for food. Sides are not included with steak. VERY overpriced for quality of food. Cool view of Ohio River and nice gas fireplace on the wall.
Good Food, Lovely Atmosphere
The service was great and the staff was very thoughtful. The food was delicious, if a little expensive. We had a lovely view of the river. I wish there were more chicken options.
Best views of any restaurant in Evansville
My husband and I had dinner with a friend at Cavanaugh's this week. It had been several years since we last visited - travels and other places to go in the area took our attention away. We were seated next to the window and enjoyed watching the sun set over the river. Tropicana is located at the bend in the Ohio River in Evansville - which allows for this restaurant to have the most beautiful views in the area. We shared the calamari appetizer and ahi tuna. The calamari had a little more breading than we typically like, but was still very good. The accompanying sauce was excellent. Our friend had the tomatoes and mozzarella which was outstanding. The aged balsamic and fresh basil made the dish. The bread served here is addictive -- brought warm and with a lovely crust. I had the salmon and grits, which was very good. The salmon was a little dry - but the sauce more than made up for it. My husband's shrimp scampi was good with nice sized seafood. Our friend had a filet. Presentation is beautiful. We were too full for dessert, but the offerings were tempting. Dress is upscale casual here, though you'll see some folks dressed more casually and some a little more formal. No jacket or tie is required. The view alone is worth a return, and the food was worth a repeat visit - in less time than it took us to get back here this time!
Terrific Work dinner
Went with coworkers for a team dinner. Food was excellent. Everything from the seafood, steaks, side dishes were delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was also excellent. Although we were stuffed we all ordered desert and it did not disappoint. The views from the restaurant were beautiful. I look forward to going again.
Superb Dinner
We have dined at Cavanaughs a few time and although a little on the pricey side the food has always been fabulous. We've had seafood, steak, salad, sides & desserts. Always great!
Solid with Exceptional Service & Views
I struggle with this review. Part of me wants to say " 4 stars " and part of me wants to say " 3 stars ". I settle on 3 but a high 3. The river views are spectacular. I enjoyed a beautiful pink and purple sunset that is the stuff of movies. Nothing can beat that. The service is incredible. I cannot give enough credit to my waiter. He was attentive, anticipated my needs, and paced the meal properly. The meal itself mixed on. For the price, I have a set of expectations that the food didn't live up to. The lobster bisque was too salty and lacked an enjoyable texture. My steak, the prime filet 8 oz required a redo: I ordered it medium rare and it first arrived medium well. They took it back and brought a new one rather quickly. The desert was fine, a turtle cheesecake, but the accompanying port - a Ruby - had to be sent back for a Tawny. It should be noted - a restaurant of this price and caliber should have a 10 or even 20 year port by the glass. It's not uncommon and would be great. Know that the restaurant gave adjustments to the bill without being asked. Again, exemplary service. I would go back and would recommend this to any traveler.
Birthday to remember
I visited this venue for the first time at the suggestion of a friend. I was delightfully impressed. I chose the crab cakes and lobster Mac and cheese which both were absolutely delicious. The highlight, however, was the live music. He was absolutely wonderful and sang a few of my favorite at request. I will definitely be back.
Great special occasion place
We recently celebrated an anniversary at Cavanaughs and it was a great evening. Loved the 14 ounce pork chop and always love their asparagus side! The carrot cake was over the top My wife's filet was perfect. Yes it's pricey but worth it one and a while
Wonderful surprise along the banks of the Ohio River
We were surprised by our dining experience: romantic atmosphere, lovely night view of the river, well prepared food, and friendly, prompt service. The ahi tuna appetizer was excellent, steaks were good but a bit over cooked as was the shrimp. The lava cake was tasty. Dinning room was noisy but the waitress suggested another location next time. It's pricey but a nice experience.
Dinner for business
What an excellent meal! It was phenomenal. Dinner was great and Sandy did an awesome job of keeping up with a very big group and we all enjoyed our meal. The chef came out to check on our meal and my rack of lamb was done perfect and would be one of the reasons I come back here just for that! Thank you so much for making our dinner meeting perfect!
Perfect Evening
This was our first visit to Cavanaughs, and it certainly will not be our last. We were greeted by the hostess who immediately made us feel at home. She led us to our table and when my wife asked if we could sit a bit further from a table with a group she took is to a nice two top at the me of the row where it was quiet. I must also say that our waitress Beth was outstanding; she was helpful in making suggestions, and was prompt, courteous, and attentive the entire dinner. Now for the food. It was excellent and was worthy of the price. We started off with Beef Sate, it was hot and very flavorful. The homemade bread was great, and very addictive. My wife ordered the Queen Cut Prime Rib, Vegetable medley (zucchini, squash, red peppers), and Au Gratin Potatoes. Her steak was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were perfectly crisp where they needed to be and soft where they needed to be. The potatoes were homemade and you could tell. Soft with a creamy cheese. My wife said it was all perfect. I had the 6 oz. filet Au Poivre medium rare at it was cooked perfect and was bursting with flavor. The wild mushroom risotto was very good as well. We topped it off with Turtle cheesecake which provided a rich and decadent end to a perfect meal. Thanks for a wonderful experience; atmosphere, food, and service.
Very enjoyable experience
My wife and I were visiting the casino and the Tropicanna Hotel and went to Cavanaughs for a nice diner and we were not disappointed. It is a fine dining restaurant so it is not cheap, but it was worth it. We both had the filet, mine " Oscar " and we had lettuce wedge salad and grilled asparagus. I also had the oysters on the half shell and all was excellent. Sandra was our server and I would suggest you ask for her. She was excellent. The food was prepared perfectly and presented very well. We were very pleased and would highly recommend this fine restaurant.
Bad Service Ruined My Birthday Dinner
Cavanaughs is located right inside casino aztar and has a really nice, romantic, classy atmosphere but there's no need to dress up. The piano bar is nice and the guy can play anything you request. I don't recommend the bar service because my drinks have usually tasted wrong and I had to send them back. There's also a nice view of the river. We've been here a handful of times and the steaks taste great and are tender and juicy. The sides come family style so they are large. The mashed potatoes and fries are great and I also recommend the appetizers. The crab bisque has an excellent flavor and large chunks of crab, and the dips are also very good. The Blackened Neptune entree was described by my father-in-law as one of the best meals he's ever had. One thing I was sad about was that in the past when you were seated they'd bring out a bread basket and a roasted clove of garlic that was so soft and tender that you could place a clove on your bread and spread it with ease. Now days the garlic is no longer roasted but instead the hard pieces are placed in a small bowl of oil so you can't eat them. I do not recommend the Trio Plate entree that comes with steak, chicken breast, and jumbo shrimp. The steak is great but the chicken is incredibly bland and the shrimp are far from jumbo. It's best to just order the steak. The service is usually good but on our last visit our waiter was so bad that he ruined my birthday dinner. He was a young, blonde guy who wasn't even fit to serve at a Denny's. Even though the restaurant was half empty, he kept disappearing for 15-20 minutes and we had to flag down other waiters several times to ask if they could find our waiter. He brought out the bread basket after our soup (should have arrived after being seated). We only got one drink refill during our entire meal, he forgot to bring out the palate cleanser that you get right before your entree comes out and he had an attitude when he finally brought it. He never removed unused dishes and we waited 15 minutes for him to show up with our bill so we told the manager we were having terrible service. The manager didn't do anything except clear our table and say he'd get our server. So, there was no acknowledgment of the fact that my birthday dinner had been ruined by awful service. No sorry or complimentary dessert or anything. And when our waiter finally showed up (without the bill) there was still no sorry but he kept trying to get us to purchase dessert. The food is very good but if you go try to avoid the server we had because no matter how tasty the food is, bad service can really ruin the experience.
Rude staff and worst experience. Never again!
We had a reservation (on a Wednesday!) and showed up on time, only to be told by the hostess that in spite of our reservation, there would be an hour wait due to a " full dining room. " There were literally only 2 tables with diners, and all other tables were empty! We tried to sit at the bar to get dinner service instead - trying to make the best of a bad situation, and we couldn't wait an extra hour just to sit at a table because we had concert tickets. Then it took at least 5 minutes to get the attention of one of the two bartenders - only to be told that we wouldn't be able to get anything other than an appetizer in under an hour! No idea what the problem is with this restaurant but they clearly have serious management issues. I will not waste my time trying again.
Beyond Terrible
I'd fire the cook and manager and start over. Had a filet they burnt, that had this nasty wine sauce and thought I'd throw up when eating the ad gratin potatoes! Man were they terrible. Not for me will never go back.
You pay the price; but for what
Pricey? yes. Good atmosphere, food, or service? Hit or miss! Too much smoke (cigarettes in a non smoking area?), live music too loud (I love the lounge singer, piano bar era " Piano Man ") Some food over done, and to order not really cooked as asked for. The portobella (crimini mushroom) entree was delicious according to my girlfriend, and all of the prime ribs looked and tasted delicious. I asked for mine to be as rare as they have it and it came out more similar to everyone else who ordered it med-rare to medium. No problems, with tasty au jus and raw horseradish it was delicious. needs to be much better for these prices, as downtown has many fine restaurants at a decent price. I suppose this has to do with the river boat; gambling not food has always been the draw there. But even Ri Ra Irish Pub, a block from the casino is better all around for half the price.
great all around
We have been to this location two times and both times the food, service has always been great. could not ask for it to be any better
Excellent brunch!!!
My husband and I visited Cavanaugh's for the first time today for Sunday brunch and were very pleased! The hostess greeted us promptly and thanked us for coming. She was very pleasant. She seated us promptly. Our server, Jon, came to our table almost immediately and served us ice water without asking. He took our drink orders. We made our first trip to the buffet and our drinks were waiting on our table for us when we returned. The peel and eat shrimp were already peeled and it was very good, high quality shrimp. The salad bar selections are minimal, but everything is very fresh and very good! I would rather have limited but high quality items to choose from. The hot table was very nice. There is an egg / waffle / pancake station and they make any of those items to order. They had an array of hot items - bacon, sausage, potatoes, a wonderful pastry-topped seafood dish, and a nice rice pilaf. Then to the prime rib station - the meat was perfectly prepared and absolutely delicious! There was no one there so I had to wait, perhaps 30 seconds, and someone who was working at the other end of the food table came and served me. He was a very polite young man. We didn't need our steak knives, the prime rib was so tender. The desserts are also limited, but delicious. We really appreciated Jon's attentiveness - he kept my coffee cup full and our dishes were cleared within seconds after we set them aside. We will be back again! Even if we did not use our casino comps for this meal, it would be worth the $20. On a scale of 1 to 10, their food is a 9 and their customer service is a 10. Thank you for a great first experience!
Great food, even better service!
I took my parents out to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day together. While the food is priced quite a bit higher than your typical restaurant, our waitress, Sandra, was very upfront and honest about what to expect. While a steak can range upwards from $55 to $75, you not only get a superior cut of meat, but it is promised to be cooked to your liking and it will also fill you up (my 225 lb brother joined us and he could not finish his 21 oz ribeye). In addition to an excellent meal, we also received fabulous service from Sandra. From the moment we were seated until the fireworks began just outside the window, Sandra made sure we were comfortable and treated with respect and appreciation. My mom was undecided if she wanted to try a glass of wine, so Sandra went out of her way and brought her samples of three different types of wine to taste. She also knew I had brought my parents to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day, so she graciously gave them each a free desert after their meals, which were both large enough to share with everyone (the carrot cake was to die for!) Overall, this isn't your typical once-a-week restaurant... Rather, it's one of those places where you go once-in-a-blue-moon for a great meal and an even better experience.
great place
When i visit evansville, this is my favorite restaurant. Food and especially service was excellent. I love the changes at this place. I will be back next time I visit town
Ask for Sandra!
The food is sublime and the views are wonderful. Sandra was a joy to talk to and is aces when helping you choose a wine! This is definitely the perfect choice for a nice, romantic meal.
Will not go back
This was our first visit to Cavanaugh's. The ambiance was very nice, they just finished remodeling so I cannot comment on what it used to look like. This is a high end upscale restaurant so expectations to me are high. We ordered entree's at 6:15... at 7:00 the food finally arrived. I had been looking around for the waitress wanting to ask what the delay was since there were empty tables all around us?? My husband is diabetic and had already taken his shot since typically dinner comes within about 20 min. Luckily, there was bread he could continue eating until the food arrived. She finally came out of the kitchen carrying our food, as soon as she came to the table she started apologizing for the delay. She indicated the 'baked potato' was the reason?? Really?? My daughters entrée as well as my husbands was very good. Mine on the other hand was horrible. I ordered the Seafood Scampi - jumbo shrimp, scallops, and clams (I requested no clams) sautéed with garlic and lemon. The shrimp was so salty, I could not eat it, the scallops were fine, not very flavorful. The waitress came by and asked how things were, I indicated the shrimp were very salty and inedible (I love shrimp and have never tasted shrimp that seemed to be only seasoned in salt). The waitress took the shrimp and said she will have them make another batch. I started eating the pasta which was overcooked and basically drowned in 'butter'. I could not taste the lemon or garlic, it was just plain butter very oily and disgusting. She brought back the shrimp and at that point I told her I could not eat this pasta that all I taste is oily butter. I tried the shrimp it wasn't that salty anymore, but it seemed just like it was grilled plain, she brought me some cocktail sauce but that didn't help. She was very sympathetic and concerned and asked if I wanted anything else. At this point, I was not willing to 'wait' for however long another entrée would take to prepare. She took the cost of the entrée off our bill. We were very disappointed since this was a 'birthday' celebration and the last night in Evansville. We would not recommend.
NOT worth the price!!!
It was my wife's 40th birthday so I wanted to take her someplace nice. Unfortunately the food quality was below that of an average family restaurant. It took us slightly less than an hour from the time we sat down to get our food, which was fine since we weren't in a rush. But when I finally received my steak it was LITERALLY HALF FAT! I didn't want to send it back and wait even longer. I ordered medium well and this was barely cooked to medium rare (it was even cold in some spots). The meat was so tough to cut I shook the table. Is this the quality of meat you get at a premium price? The menu is a la carte, so I added broccoli and loaded baked potato. The broccoli was bland, and the potato was as good as I expected (hard to mess that up). My wife ordered the scallops and a salad. The salad was nothing special, but still good. And while the scallops were good, she only received 6 of them! The manager of the restaurant (at least I think that's who he was) kept checking on the table behind us, but nobody else. When I turned around I saw why. The woman had on a dress that had cleavage shoved up to here. Ahhh, now I get it! He literally walked past us (and everyone else) 4 TIMES to check on this couple! The bottom line is that if you charge a premium price, you should deliver premium service and at least above average food quality. I understand that you cannot always control the quality of food delivered by the vendor. But this was definitely not worth the price you pay. I cannot recommend Cavanaughs!
Average at best
My wife and I had eaten there in the past and service and food were pretty good. We had heard that the service and quality had gone down but we decided to go anyway. The restaurant is way over-rated. Service was adequate but not outstanding. The food was mediocre. This is billed as a high quality steakhouse and has high end prices but does not live up to these standards. When 2 people are paying $80 to $100 for a meal, you expect something special. This is not the place.
Terrible experience
After a long day out we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner and Cavanaugh's was recommended. We arrived and sat near a window... the view was very nice. Our server greeted us and he was also very polite and accomodating. We ordered the lobster bisque which was very salty. We ordered lamb chops and the special Wahoo. The food came in the expected amount of time for an upscale restaurant. The Wahoo and everything on the plate was ice cold. The lamb chops were warm but not hot and the potatoes was cold. After some hesitation I decided to send the Wahoo back. The waiter apologized and took my plate. After about 20 minutes he returned with my meal which was the exact same plate, fish, vegetables and potatoes. It was obvious they took my plate and put it in a microwave to heat it up. The fish was rubbery, the sauce was thick and hard, the potatoes were like paste, and the vegetables were extremely soft. I once again sent it back. Twenty minutes later my meal arrived; this time is was hot and fresh. We asked to see the manager and were informed that he was too busy to see us, but, he would comp the fish entree. We said we still wanted to see the manager. When he finally came by we explained our experience and he said, " I already comped your meal what else do you want? ". I said we came to Cavenaugh's to have a nice dinner together and we had to eat firty minutes apart and the experience was not enjoyable. He said he would see what he could do. Ten minutes later he came back and did not look at me or speak to me and rudely told my husband he would comp both meals and gave us a forty dollar gift certificate for our next visit. We will not be back.
10th wedding anniversary delight
This is a special occasion restaurant for me. The cost of our meal was more than I want to pay every time we go out but for the extra cost I felt the service, the food, as well as the ambiance was excellent. Not only was the food great but the preparation was on point. All in all my special occasion restaurant of choice in the future.
A Good Evening
We went there to celebrate my fiancee's birthday. The atmosphere was very laid back and relaxed. When we walked in, there was someone playing some calming music on the piano. The servers were friendly. We had the lamb chops and New York Strip for dinner and it was delicious. I recommend this place for anyone wanting to celebrate something or just for a date outing.
Great steaks at a reasonable price!
Recent stop after reading the good reviews, and we weren't disappointed! We ordered the sirloin, and there was not a bit of grisle, or fat! The ceasar salad was very good, the baked potato was a lit tle dry, but paired with the excellent service, I'd say a strong " 8 ".
Amazing Visit
We had a wonderful, romantic, delightful evening! Thank you to Serague for such wonderful service. ;)
Good food, but over-priced and horrible service!
We called ahead for a reservation. We arrived on time, but they were not ready for us (wasn't crowded, just didn't know where to put us...... only 4 adults mind you). They told us it would be about 10 minutes. We decided to grab a drink at the bar while we waited, but never could get the bartender's attention (too busy with the waitress orders). Got our table (I appreciated the light up menus for ease of reading) and waited 10 minutes for the drink order to be taken. Drinks arrived another 10 minutes later and then the food order was taken. The food didn't take too long and was delicious. It was definitely over-priced for what you actually received, though. The server was fine when he came to our table, but it wasn't often enough and he didn't stay on top of his job. We almost always tip like 25%, but this time left 15% (average service is 20%).
Wonferful Place, Great Hospitality
Server was very attentive, food was amazing. The new updates are amazing. Staff was friendly. Server explained the dishes well and suggested different wines for us. We had a great experience.
Fanastic
It is expensive but the food was wonderful. Service was above and beyond. Had lamb chops for the first time and they were amazing.
Worthy of Anniversary Celebration
We have eaten at Max and Erma's restaurant (in the same Casino) several times but always bypassed this restaurant. It is pricier but we decided to go there to celebrate our anniversary this year. The food was wonderful I chose to have scallops for my dinner, my husband chose a steak. The view of the Ohio River was spectacular and the service was exceptional. We will return. There was entertainment provided by a pianist and singer that also helped set the mood. Many times entertainment is loud and " in your face " but this was just far enough away and soothing enough that it added to the experience instead of intruding.
Decent, Not Great
Bar and staff were great. Very friendly and the two gals at the piano were good. Waiter was also very nice and restaurant has a great view. Decent value. Downside was the fact that this is attached to the casino and people come dressed as if they just got out of bed. Food was good, but not great. My meal had been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile and it showed. Next time i may just opt to sit at the bar and order a few appetizers.
OUTSTANDING
We were greeted promptly, they offered to hang our coats right away which was very nice. The host followed all our reservation requests for the table we wanted. Service was the best we have seen. The server suggested and brought us some wine samples and recommended items from the dinner menu. Cavanaugh's has made a lot of updates since we visitied 2 years ago with ambiance, staff and structure. Everything we ate was delicious. We will be back
Easter Dinner at Cavanaughs
My family of six choose to have dinner at Cavanaughs as part of our Easter celebration. The entire evening was wonderful. The food was delicious and the service was first rate. We especially want to thank our server who was fantastic and attentive to our every need throughout our dinner. Great place to receive a top end dining experience in Evansville.
Great Dinner! Great Service!
Had dinner with a large group. Food was excellent. Highly recommend their filet (always medium rare) and the creamed spinach was dee-lish! Had salted caramel dessert---the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Sandra provided excellent service to our group--she was very attentive, polite, and quick to anticipate our needs. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal---but know, Cavanaugh's is pricey... only recommend for special occasions--unless you win a bunch at the casino! :)
Wow! High end comes to Evansville
Right with the casino. This is an excellent high end restaurant. Food was excellent. Service even better. Had the lobster bisque and it was to die for! Steak was good size and perfectly cooked. Good wine list. Even for by the glass.
42nd wedding anniversary
Seated at the large widows overlooking the Ohio. Great waitress and a discussion of our favorite lost server of all time Allen Joseph NY strip, seafood pasta, Thai salad, lobster bisque, and a good merlot. A free carrot cake to take home for later. Classy place and great for special occasions..
Great Meal! Good Service
Was very happy and surprised to find such a great meal and service at a Casino hotel restaurant in Evansville
Cavanaughs - Tropicana Evansville
Service was outstanding. The waiter, Sergey, was attentive and very alert. The atmosphere was perfect.
Very good.. for Evansville
Stopped in on a quiet Tuesday night and sat at the bar. Service was spot on. Piano player belted out tunes to all 3 of us seated there. Got the porkchop - meh. I am sure for Evansville it is 5* but as compared to larger cities it has a way to go.
good food, average service
located at the second level of the casino, you can enter without going into the casino. You walk through the bar into the seating area. most people pefer the tables by the curved windows. Our party of eight had a variety of dishes ;salmon, steak, crab cakes, and all were very good. The steaks were prepared as requested. The quality is good but about what you would expect with entrees ranging from $28 up with steaks begining at $32. The bread is hot and fresh served with butter and garlic. The presentation is ok but nothing special. Service was lacking, not attentive enough (water glasses went unfilled) The wait staff while friendly seemed under trained reaching across people to serve, leaving service plates, just not professional. Parking is across ther street at a parking garage. You can walk over the street on a second level walkway. Good food but not a " dining experience'
Enjoyable dinning experience
Hostess greeted us with a smile and we were seated immediately at a window overlooking the Ohio river. We had made our reservation online. Josh, our waiter, was courteous, pleasant and considerate of our romantic privacy needs. The food was presented artfully and tasted wonderful. After dinner we enjoyed the piano and singing entertainment of Matt Clark in the bar. We'll look forward to our dinner there.
Over cooked steak
This the the flagship restaurant at Tropicana's casino boat downtown. It is presenting itself as a high end steak and seafood restaurant. They have the decor down for that. It is pretty and well decorated. The view from most every table is a nice view of the river. They have the setting down well. The menu has the usual offerings at a steak house themed place. There are salads and starters of my types. I opted for the Cavanaugh's salad with herb vinaigrette dressing. This was good. Baby romaine and frisee lettuces with tomatoes, shaved carrot and radishes. Very fresh and very nice. My entree was the Blackened Neptune. This is a small filet mignon with four shrimp and lump crab meat on the side. The blackened seasoning is well done. It has a slow burn kick to it that is flavorful. The brandy tarragon seafood sauce was a cheesy mornay sauce. It was a bit on the heavy side, but did serve as a good foil to the heat of the steak's seasoning. Mashed potatoes came with this as well. The shrimp and crab were well prepared. The problem I encountered was that I ordered my steak to be medium. Most everywhere I go this means pink in the middle. Mine was on the well side of medium-well. Fortunately, filet is forgiving and it was not shoe leather at this point. I did not send it back or bring this up to the server. It was disappointing though. A steak house should his this nail on the head every time. No exceptions. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The wine and spirits list are not exhaustive, but everyone should find something to like there. They have a double columned page filled with specialty drinks. All looked to be sweetened martinis of one kind or another. For the city of Evansville this is a nice place. In a larger town with more competition this would not last long.
Great service, great staff
Thanks for making our 22nd wedding anniversary a special one. Our server Sandra was the best. We will recommend to everyone.
Anniversary Dinner
Excellent service. Food was very well prepared. Atmosphere was romantic. Will visit again and would recommend for any special occasion.
Best service in town
I have several food allergies, and the usual response from a server is a disinterested 50% certain maybe, regarding any question about the menu. At Cavanaugh's, our sever (Jonathan) went above and beyond. He talked to the chef several times, to make sure he had the right answers, to see what options I had, and to make sure my meal was safe for me. Even more incredible than that, he left the restaurant and ran downstairs to get me honey mustard, when I asked if they had it and they didn't. The new renovations were lovely and the live piano man laid the perfect soundtrack to a perfect evening.
Very slow and disappointing service
We both ordered an appetizer and drinks a Shrimp dish with Alfredo sauce entree. The appetizer and drinks came out promptly. The Dining area was about half full, with a party of 20 and a few smaller parties and the normal 2-4 diners. After our appetizer we waited over an hour for our entree. We were given the excuse of the bigger parties. At one point the manager came out and told us our meal would be out in 2 min tops. We waited another 10 min. And walked out and left them with our $75.00. We walked down to Max and Ermas for half the price and had our food in 10 min. And one of the dishes was Shrimp Scampi I had lost my appetite and only had soup and salad. The atmosphere at Cav was pleasant and the wait staff was very friendly and prompt. The problem was in the kitchen. It seemed with all the Waite staff moving around the dining area that there was not enough chefs in the kitchen and there were several empty tables in the dining area. This was ridiculous for the prices they charge for a meal and also each side was ale carte
best food ever
this is the best food and service combination add the view of the Ohio river and that makes for a perfect evening at CAVANAUGHS.. Be sure to ask for SERGIE
Wonderful experience
The view of the Ohio River is beautiful from every table. It does get a little warm next to the windows when the sun is setting. Nice fireplace. Good piano music in the background. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The server was wonderful and knew the menu and had many helpful tips. The salads and appetizers had many good choices. The Thai peanut brittle salad was scrumptious and large as was the Caesar salad. The 16 oz prime rib was perfection and tender. The filet was cooked perfectly and tender. The side of Asparagus was large enough for 3 people and was well cooked with a side of Hollandaise. The crème brule was heaven to taste. We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit and will be back. All of the salads and sides are generous enough to share.
THE Place to go in Evansville
Amazing food, service and atmosphere. This is a REAL Fine Dining Restaurant, so you will pay more than the regular chain restaurant, but believe me, it is exciting and worth it. Treat yourself, it is by far the best in the Tri-State area.
Big Bucks
I wanted to take my wife out for a good time. We got to Cavanaughs everyone seemed rude. both are stakes came out tough it was not a good time.
Awesome food great value
Great food, awesome service, best value for the money, it was my wife's Birthday Dinner. We will be back AWSOME from start to finish
