Access to everything!
This is a really fun campground with excellent access to everything in Waterton! They have shared cooking shelters which are very convenient. Clean bathrooms and showers. Wildlife all around and walking distance to restaurants, ice cream, shopping, the lake, etc. Book immediately, they sell our for summer months within hours!
Clean, cute but too busy, crammed and loud
Nice with most amenities, but wayyyy too crammed, no privacy, too loud, too busy. And no fire pits... which is strange because the site is essentially an urban green lawn park with a few trees (in town), so no fear of wildfire. Don't recommend.
Besser geht fast nicht
Ganz tolle Lage. Distanz zur Stadt zu Fuß machbar. Stellplätze sehr schön und großzügig Ruhige Lage. Preis-Leistung völlig okay. Anlage sauber und gepflegt. Preis im Rahmen. Die Sanitäranlagen sauber und gepflegt. Hoher Wiederholfaktor
Love this campground!
This is a huge CG. It is split into several sections. Most sites are in 2 large areas which seemed to fit large RVs, but with little shade. Years ago we stayed in one of these areas and we were very happy there but this time we stayed in a smaller section and loved it. The sites close to the lake only fit smaller RVs, tents or travel trailers, they are more spacious, we had power and a lovely view. We were in section D. Sites were very quiet, well maintained and close to town. There is only 1 dump station, there was a bit of a queue but we were in no hurry.
A great campground in a great location
Waterton Townsite Campground has some of the cleanest and best facilities I've seen in Alberta. It's a very large site, easily to walk to downtown Waterton Park and most trail heads. Pick a pitch on the perimeter for more privacy - also note that there's not a lot of shade on many pitches.
Loved Waterton Townsite Campground
Campground has been extensively upgraded over the last few years, lots of full service sites with new trees, grass, pads, and pavement. Still not much shade, and the most desirable sites are around the perimeter of the campground as they offer a little more privacy. Cook shacks and bathrooms have also been renovated and the best part is you can walk to town, beach and there are several hikes close by.
Well maintained campground within easy reach of town
The best bit about this campground is that it is a beautiful easy walk along the lakeside into town, where there are plenty of options for food and drink. Deer and chipmunks are around all the time and I loved sitting in the RV watching eagles overhead. Lovely views of the mountains from the campsite and several hikes on the doorstep. The shower block had been recently renovated and was lovely and clean, the whole site was very well maintained. We weren't able to book as they don't take reservations for September but we had no problem getting a site for our RV. There was a lot of construction work going on in town and half of the campground was being updated, but that didn't cause us any problems. The site was quite busy at the weekend, noticeably quieter on weekdays but we never found it noisy or felt there was a lack of privacy, though the lack of trees makes the site feel quite open.
Simple campground
The campground is quite simple, with very few trees (very windy!), no privacy and no firepits. The park, however, is amazing. The campsite is also close to the town, so it's easy to go there to walk around.
If you're in the area
This campground is located right in the town. Can walk everywhere you need to get to. The campsite was very open, but had lovely views of the lake / mountains. Squirrels / chipmunks running around everywhere, we saw 2 deer while in the campground as well. Toilet / shower facilities seemed very new and nice. The parks staff were helpful when we asked questions. As the campground is located right on the lake, you could go swimming, it was also next to a hiking trail to Bertha Falls and Bertha lake.
Large site, nice bathroom facilities
Very nice Canadian Parks Campground. Had one of the few sites without utilities. Restrooms were clean, flush toilets and great showers. Easy walk to the Village. I'd heard that it is often windy here and I can attest to that. We had wind gusts to over 50 mph both days we were there. The folks with tents positioned their cars to block the wind and we saw pop up campers that had tied off to their vehicles and trees. Don't bring any wimpy tent stakes! Beautiful views of the mountains and river. There is a new section of the campground that looks like it will open soon, so inquire when making reservations. This park is located about two hours north of the US Glacier National Park so it's an easy drive and has a completely different feel to it.
Accessible Campground!!!
This Campsite is accessible to all! Accessible for # hiking # lake # town # sceneries # bars # restaurants and a lot more! Awsome campground! We definitely come back to this campsite;) It's clean too and cool view!
one step up from parking at a Walmart
There is nothing quaint or charming about this one - it's entirely functional. You feel like you are on top of each other and there is very little to offer any type of privacy. The surrounding area does have some great views but when we were there, everything was clouded over because of forest fires in the north. The hook-ups worked well and there is easy access to a walking path by the water. Just don't come here for peace or quiet or any illusions of being in nature! Canada, you need to do better in your national parks!
Excellent campsite for the cost!
Stayed here a few nights the last week of June, beat the summer rush and it was nice and quiet. The facilities were clean and showers were free! Excellent walking distance to main street and easy bike riding all around down Want to go back already!
Like camping at a music festival
The views outside the area are stunning but once the trailers and RV's role in on Friday night, it starts to feel like a crowded music festival or camping at a flea market. Just a giant field with little space to call your own and lots and lots of noise. It's nothing like the campgrounds at Glacier where they have designed for space, ample trees, and provides a camper with a thoughtfully articulated ground space that gives you a sense of privacy and the feeling of a wilderness experience even at a campground with significantly more people. I spent most of the two nights staying focused on just watching the moon move across the sky above the mountains while trying to drown out my neighbors, who weren't rude or obnoxious.... just loud and on top of me. I had expected to stay 3-4 nights but left after the second to head back to Many Glacier. The town is a nice amenity and the shower cold, clean and refreshing. It was pleasant to stroll into town, have a meal and a beer versus cooking over a stove but the ambience of your campsite will likely be a disappointment.
Windy, but excellent location
We have camped here many times in our trailer. It does get super windy in town, so be prepared for that. I love that it is right in town, so we can go out for supper if we don't feel like cooking. The water park is also closeby for the kids to run to.
Great would stay again
We stayed with tents just next to the entrance to the campsite. Great spot, bathrooms close by, cooking shelter as well. Quiet area. Many restaurants in town in walking distance. Great views from the campsite. Wifi in the citycenter.
Townsite
Great spot to stay
Waking up in the morning next to the lake at Waterton was such a great experience, a great spot to stay for anyone looking to explore the national park. The campground seemed to be quite clean all around
One big field with " spots " for RVs and tent campers
As with many provincial parks in Canada, the amenities were great and the Townsite Campground was located within walking distance of everything in the town. What we didn't like about the campground was the lack of trees and privacy. We felt like we were parked in a big empty dirt lot. I don't think this was caused by the fires in the Fall of 2017, but we did wonder.
beautiful
right by water. great pics. little squirrels everywhere. nice restrooms. terrific sunset! near National Park. Gas is high. nice restaurant with decorations on wall. cooking places and washing places. soft ground for my tent.
Wonderful National Park
We stayed in the town site campground, amenities are very modern and well maintained. So nice to see natures rebound after the massive 2017 fires, just a note many hikes remain closed due to the major fire damage so if your in the Hiking mood check ahead to avoid disappointment.
Amenities
This campsite had great bathrooms and showers, cooking huts and lots of accessible water. The best of all was the dish washing sinks. Two stainless steel double sinks so campers can wash dishes with ease and a great view!!
Alberta's Best Kept Secret - Stay here!
This is THE place to stay at Waterton. Try and stay at an outside site as the views are incredible. There is always wildlife in the park campground. Washrooms are clean and great showers. Excellent interpretive programs.
Colombian Ground Squirrels EVERYWHERE!!!!
This is a great campground. Spring Water is very accessible and there were several near our campsite. I don't know what campsites to recommend based on views, but I would advise an edge campsite on all sides, because the surrounding Canadian Rockies are gorgeous to see. Now, for the most memorable and distinct part of the campground, the quanity of Colombian Ground Squirrels. There is a hole every ten feet where a Colombian Ground Squirrel sticks out its head. They scurry around, distracting you from your activity (maybe for the better, because they're adorable), and some aren't even afraid of humans. I would recommend this campground if camping is what you're doing or you have a small budget but if you're staying in Waterton and want to know where to stay, I'd advise Prince of Wales hotel, which you can see from the campground very clearly.
Lovely site
Lovely campground. Wide pitches, flat and superb showers. My only negative was that the " sewer hole " was in the centre of the pitch so couldn't empty the tanks til moved from the pitch. Would I go again- definitely!!
Stunning view!!
We had not made reservations, but had no problem getting a spot. Very easy to find and close to the town so you can walk there. The Columbian ground squirrels were everywhere and cute to watch, though they say don't feed them! The view is STUNNING!!!!!!! The Waterton Lake is BEAUTIFUL!!! There's also a trail you can take through the campground that will take you into the city - it's right on the lake We don't need to use the washrooms, but if we had to, we would definitely use them here!
A Special Thanks To The Fire Crews
Waterton is a special place which had a very tough 2017 due to a very aggressive wildfire. Although the damage to the backcountry and a number of the trails is extensive I was pleased to find the townsite in pretty good shape. When you walk and drive around town you get a real sense of how close the fires came to town. You try to imagine what it was like the night the wildlife roared over the mountains towards town. One road in, one way out. It was a relief to see the townsite campground had been spared. The campground has everything from full hook ups with 50A to a tent village area that you share with a colony of gophers who spend most of their day complaining about all the tourists wandering through their space. The sites are large enough for pretty much any size of vehicles. One unusual feature is the sewer outlet is in the middle of the RV gravel pad so best you limber up with some yoga moves before crawling under your unit to plug in. VERY IMPORTANT you hook your hose up and run water in the sewer line to make sure it drains before you dump. 3 sites nearby us found their sewer lines plugged and the parks maintenance vacuum truck had to be called into suck out the rocks. Kids apparently like to throw rocks down the sewer. Last tip… Do not leave your awning out. There may be a campground in Canada with worse winds but I have not experienced it. The park follows the clean campsite policy which is important given bears are known to drop by for a visit. If you leave out attractants and wildlife gets into it you risk being charged and fined.
A Beautiful Park but poor campground
Waterton Park is a fabulous, scenic, park but the campground leaves a lot to be desired. Parks Canada packs as many people as possible into a mostly open field. They have a quiet hour in effect but it's not enforced. If you're wanting to stay here your best bet is to take a tent and stay in the walk in campground. If you're in an RV and want a quiet experience stay outside the park! If you're the type that can sleep through anything then by all means enjoy!
A great weekend in Waterton
If I lived in a 2 hour distance from this park, I think I would go here many times in the summer. There is something so beautiful and peaceful in this area and it is a really cute little touristy town too. Their recent forest fire in August 2017 has meant a lot of the hikes have been closed but even walking along the paved trail next to the water is breathtaking. Hopefully I can come back one day and do some of the hikes.
Lots of people packed in a field - BEST Campground bathrooms EVER!
The park services packs a lot of people in a prime location. We were guests on Canada Day! People were very respectable about not drinking or making tons of noise. Things were QUIET when the sun went down. I give Canadians a lot of credit for sticking to the campers code and allowing everyone to enjoy such a festive day! Everything about this campground is phenomenal EXCEPT the everyone is out in a big field part and no campfires. Check in went fast, there is ample parking, the bathrooms are brand new with stainless steel sinks, granite countertops, ample showers and HOT water, and there is even a dish station. There are picnic shelters with woodstoves. Once you are parked you can easily explore the town without moving your car again.
Great place to stay while in Waterton
Nice quaint campground. Within walking distance of downtown Waterton. Fantastic views of the mountains and lake. power at most campsites. Water and sewer in the grounds. There are permanent shelters close to all campsites if the weather gets bad. Watch out for gophers
Great location, lousy grounds
I've never camped in what essentially is a wide-open treeless grassed parking lot before, but if you want to be close to amazing hiking and food and canoeing and kayaking Etc, this is for you. Our campsite was essentially just stay grassy patch near a gravel path parking lot with absolutely no trees. I would say on average there are maybe one 20 foot tree for every three campsites. It's a good launchpoint but I certainly wouldn't use it for the camping experience. Definitely check out the photo of use of each of the campsites before you book.
Great Views, Clean and Convenient
We stayed here for 1 night on a 4 night hiking trip. We were traveling with a guide so I can't speak to reservations but I will say that the location of this campground right off the lake and with a quick walk to town was perfect. The campground was very clean with the best bath houses I think I've ever encountered in a campground, practically luxury. Fantastic views.
Lots of hiking and water sports
We had a great time exploring all the hiking trails even tho I was scared of running into a bear. Haha. We also did lots of Kayaking. Town was in walking distance and had lots of great restaurants....
Recommend for camping
Even-though had to stay on an unserviced (no electricity or water connection) site, we've enjoyed our time here. Showers and washrooms are clean. Beautiful lake and trails. Walking distance to shops and restaurants.
Canada Day week
We have visited this campground in our 31ft trailer with our family for many years and have seen improvements over time. I will list pros and cons to make it easier. Pros: Awesome location between lake and town. Nothing is more than a few minutes stroll away. Mountain views all around. Lots of full service pull thru sites. Washrooms updated and cleaned daily. Great for bikes. Fairly large pitches. Cons: Booking system gets full instantly Can be windy at times depending on when you visit. Open pitches close together Some speeding vehicles are ignorant to other campers. Deer. The pros outweigh the cons and this is our go to place every year. Waterton itself is hidden treasure and is never really crazy, even on Canada day weekend. We love this place and will keep coming back. Thanks Parks Canada for the continual upgrades.
Sunny Campground with Excellent Views
1- I have camped in about 15 different places in various national parks in the USA and Canada. This campground has the second most beautiful setting (second only to the Watchman CG at Zion NP in Utah). 2- It is sunny and flat, without a lot of trees. So it doesn't have mosquito issue. 3- We live near a prarie dog town, which is interesting. 4- The facilities seem to have been recently upgraded. As of June / July 2017, they were better than those in Banff and Lake Louise.
Relaxing and in the centre of all the the action
This was our first trip to Waterton and really enjoyed the campground. So close the the lake, beautiful trails. Lots of bathrooms / shower facilities. While overall privacy within the sites are lacking, the fact you can easily walk to so many places and no car is required, made up for this. We brought our bikes and didn't even use them!
Awesome
Definitely coming back..... but with a trailer / rv
This campsite is wonderful if you stay in a RV, we stayed 2 nights and the wind was horrible (thou it was stated that winds could be nasty) we still took the chance, and glad we did because Waterton is a gem! did a lot of walking and the kids even swam in the lake which is freezing cold! We plan to go back but never in a tent, the kids got a little bothered but not us. So to keep everyone happy and well rested if we are staying in Townsite will bring an RV. Plus their washrooms were decent so can't complain.
A bit blustery
This is not the greatest campground I've ever stayed in, but it's not bad. It does help to have the right expectations (which I sort of had- I'd read about the place online and promptly forgot the information). This review is from the perspective of sleeping in a tent, if you had a 5th wheel or RV, I think you would enjoy the park more. Pros: -In town. I parked my car at my campsite and did a lot of walking. I walked through town at a leisurely place, over to the Prince of Wales Hotel, around the small lake nearby, up Bear's Hump, to Cameron Falls, back to the campground. I forget the distance, but it was a solid 5+ hours of walking, and it was very pleasant. -Deer will come visit. -I did really enjoy all the leaves on the ground. It was a nice touch of fall. -You MIGHT be able to get a wi-fi signal from the free in-town wi-fi network, which has a limit of 5 hours of use per-device. -You can see the lake from the tent camping " loop ". Cons: -No firepit -It's very windy -You're camping in an open field, with a few trees, but no separation from the neighbors. -They were doing construction so, while there was a bathroom close by, you had to walk a fair distance to take a shower.
A nice spot, right on the lake and backed by mountians
The only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5, was that it was a touch pricey for me. It was typical pricing for an all amenities stall like we had, I'm just cheep and not used to paying for those kind of stalls especially as my trailer doesn't even have a bathroom or water tank. Unfortunately all of their electric only stalls were under renovations. Out of the three campsites in Waterton, this was actually the only one I didn't want to stay at. My husband and I were originally going to stay at Belly River Campground. We ended up here because we couldn't find Belly River, and the road to Cameron Lake Campground was shut down as they re-did it. I didn't want to stay here because of the complete lack of privacy between stalls. There are literally no trees. For someone who prefers being close to nature when camping, it wasn't my cup of tea. However after getting settled into the campground, I did change my mind. Turns out my husband is much less grouchy if he has a powered stall so he can watch T. V. It's not my idea of camping but whatever. It made him happy. And we were at the very end of the lane of sites which I quite liked. I didn't even really have to look at my neighbors so the lack of trees didn't bother me the way I thought it would. My husband and I also discovered that there are wonderful walking trails around this campsite that lead to the falls and all around Waterton. It ended up actually being our favorite campground out of the whole trip. Our only regret was that I'd only planned to stay for one night. If I had know just how much we were going to enjoy it, I would have stayed longer! So, if you are looking to camp in Waterton, I would recommend The Townsite Campground. If you like more private camping like me, maybe you could even try Cameron Lake Campground (though I've never been there so I can't share my personal opinion). My husband and I did eventually find Belly River and both of us were glad we ended up here instead. Belly River looked like something out of a horror movie. I could just imagine Jason coming out of those trees...
Beautiful and convenient location
We were here with a large group and really enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms are the cleanest I've ever seen in a campground and particularly impressive given the number of people at this campground. The campground is close to town and to the lake - a terrific location. It also provides shelters where you can gather outside of your tent even if it's raining.
Little privacy.
We arrived for three nights, check-in was easy and the faciliites are well maintained. This is a more urban, convenience oriented campsite as opposed to the semi-wilderness experience. The campsite is grass with little in the way of shrubbery and little space between most sites. The free wifi provided by a third party is virtually unuseable, but for most outdoor purposes cellular service at the campsite and in town is adequate. The campsite is easy walking distance to most of the Waterton townsite facilities and the walk along the waterfront is particularly pleasant. Our visit provided good weather and warm temperatures, and we didn't experience the wind that we had expected so all was good. We saw eight bears in all while driving around the park, so had our wildlife fix. Unfortunately, the road to Cameron Lake was closed, so check for closures etc prior to arrival to be sure your expected activities are available.
very windy, very poor internet, campsites not well marked, no firepits
The FREE WiFi in Section E is an absolute JOKE - 90% of the time it does NOT work, when it does it is so slow, worst internet network I have ever used. We paid 20 Cad for 3 days of the better internet version but it was the same. My suggestion, either fix it or scrape the idea of FREE WiFi within the campgrounds. First day weather was ok, next 2 days were very windy, we ended up by leaving 2 days earlier! Campsites edges not clear, had a couple placing their tent very close to ours, we could hear their conversation even in the night although they were talking in a soft voice. The town has just 2-3 stores and only one gas station with 2 pumps.
Very windy with spectacular mountain views!
I have enjoyed our first camping trip at Townsite campground in Waterton Lakes. The only thing that made it so challenging was when the wind started making howling sound during the night. Needless to say, it was all worth it when you wake up with a breath-taking view in the morning. The Waterton Village is in walking distance from the campground so if you feel like not camping, you can just grab some snacks and drinks from any restaurants and shops. I will definitely go visit again and go camping but will choose a site away from the lake next time.
Beautiful area
This is a beautiful area with mountains, lake and waterfall all within short walking distance. The town had nice shops and restaurants all with in walking distance. Campsites are small but we enjoyed meeting people and did not spend a lot of time sitting at the camper so not an issue for us. The bathrooms were very nice, new, clean with hot water. Hope to go back.
One bad camper ruins it for all, two nights in a row
Stayed for two nights recently. The walkin tent camping is in a large open field with few trees and flat ground. The good part that gets it one star is proximity to get food since I was on a motorcycle, and trail access from town without having to ride to a trail start. Also the bathroom is newly built and unlimited hot water showers for the tent area First night had loud talking teenagers chatting and having laughs until 1130 or 12, followed by a drunk bc couple stumbling in from partying making a ton of noise that must have woke the whole campground. After that couldn't sleep until 130. Next night two couples visiting about 15 feet away woke me up at 12 and couldn't sleep again until they shut up and went to sleep after one. At least there kids went to bed around 10, it is just too bad they will probably be teaching the kids this rude disrespectful behaviour in the future. This campsite is not like most parks where you have some space and can make noise late. The majority of tent campers are getting up early to hike I think so some people need to learn some respect and consideration. I will never stay at this campground again unless I have no other option or am with my trailer as getting a good night sleep is important for me when I am doing a solid hike the next morning. Other options that might be quieter are Crandall and belly River or outside the park a short drive.
Perfect scenery and facilities
Brilliant place. Visited from England and stayed at this campground for one night. Wish we could have stayed longer. The scenery is amazing, I couldn't stop taking pictures of the mountains which changed as the sun moved. Absolutely stunning. We had a spot in our RV near the lake. It was so peaceful. The showers and washrooms were very close by, clean and free. The walk into the town was charming. Hope I get the opportunity to return one day
Super nice bathrooms, great proximity to lake, and incredible mountain views
The camping grounds in Waterton were very nice. The bathrooms were incredible for a camp ground. The site is very close to the lake if you want to go for a quick swim. There are shelters with picnic tables in the group camping grounds that were perfect for when we had a little rain. The one problem I found was that there was not a good place to have a camp fire.
In the heart of Alberta's Best Kept Secret!
You can't go wrong staying here but make sure you have a reservation although there are some FCFS spots. Don't rely on them. WiFi and phone service are limited in this area. It does starting booking up in January so book early. there are excellent campground programs at the amphitheatre in the evenings.
Very nice Parks Canada campground
The biggest problem with this campground is that it needs to be booked months in advance. It's always full in the summertime. Big sites with little privacy on the shore of Waterton Lake. Waterton townsite is wonderfully quaint and you can walk everywhere from the campground. Nothing is more than a 10 min walk away.
Sehr guter Campingplatz
Well located to see the sites and visit the town
We booked for 4 nites in July. The campsite is huge and there isn't any privacy between any of the sites but that doesn't matter because you really don't spend a lot of time at the campsite. The town of Waterton is a block away with all it's conveniences. The lake is a few feet away and the beautiful mountain view surrounds you on all sides. There are accessible bike and hiking trails and all is walking distance. There is a dishwashing station, free warm showers and lots of bathrooms available. I would definitely stay again if I was lucky enough to go! Just be prepared for wind wind and more wind. We set up a canopy and found that was a mistake. The area is very windy due to it's location on the lake and between 2 mountains.
WOW
We got lucky and were able to make a 5 day reservation, three days before arriving at the end of June. Not a recommended approach, book as far in advance as possible. This is a lovely open campground on the shores of Waterton Lake, surrounded on three sides by mountains. A full service pull-through site is just under $40 per night (Ntl Park entry fees extra). Our site was perfectly level and had commanding views of the surrounding mountains. As I am composing this review, a male deer is grazing on the grass outside my RV window. The picturesque little town / hamlet of Waterton is less than a 5 minute walk from the campground. If you plan on cooking your own meals, bring food with you as selection is extremely limited and ridiculously overpriced. Diesel is not available in the town. The closest place for diesel is Mountain View about 20k east of the park and the closest full grocery store is in Pincher Creek about 50 km North East of the park. The town has free WiFi throughout and it is possible to connect from the campground. Both Bell and Rogers phones work in the park.
Excellent place to camp to explore the town and local natural treasures
Townsite Campground is not only a beautiful campground with amazing views, it is also close to town as well as local hikes and bike trails. We did not even unhook our trailer. We hiked, biked, and visited town right from our site. It was wonderful after many days on the road to explore without needing our vehicle. There is an overpopulation of ground squirrels right now which really drove our dogs nuts. There was a colony right at our site, and although this is not a fault of the park, it is something to be aware of if you have dogs. The other factor to be aware of is the wind. I would never put my awning out if not attended. Even if there is no wind when you leave, it can come at any time and it can be very powerful. If your plans for Waterton are focused on the town and local natural beauties, this is an excellent choice. My only other comment is to stock up on groceries prior to your arrival at the park. There is no grocery store and a reasonable, but not extensive choice of restaurants. We definitely plan to return.
The Canadians do it right!
Friendly, clean, spacious campground with gorgeous views. Convenient to downtown, this campground has water spigots, nice, clean restrooms, picnic tables and fire pits. Pull thru sites for large RVs or those towing. Restricted generator hours keeps things quiet. Unbelievable scenery surrounds the meadow where the campsites are arranged in a loop. Saw deer in the grassy areas surrounding the grounds.
Love Waterton Lakes National Park
Waterton Lakes National Park is absolutely fabulous. When visiting Waterton National Park, there are not that many RV Sites to pick from, when camping with a Trailer longer than 34 feet. We love camping at the Townsite Campground. Walking to around Waterton Lakes Town is easy and everything is close by, most in walking distance. Getting a Full-Hook-up in season is nearly impossible, unless you book months in advance, but never the less, we managed. Some of the sites are very close and in the open, while others at least have trees around. All the RV Camping spots in and around Waterton Lakes gets very, very busy in the summer months. Finding a good spot is tricky, if you want to relax and enjoy your camping in this area. Also be aware to find a Camping / RV spot that gives you a little bit of cover against the wind, you will blow away. After many, many stays in this area, we still prefer the Town Campsite... When the Campground gets really busy, the Amenities are not enough for the amount of sites. If you are in a self-contained RV this is not a problem. But almost every time we have visited this Campground, we were not allowed to Dump after camping. A bit annoying. They are upgrading this Campsite, so hopefully Parks Canada will make a plan with the Dumping Station.
Where the mountains meet the praires
We camped for a long weekend, walk-in tent site. Wonderful location a stone's throw from the lakeside and short walk to the falls. We had two days when the weather was windy and wet, and two days with glorious sunshine. If you have the opportunity, choose a site with some shelter. Currently the campground is under some noisy re-construction. It's a big area and some sites are worse affected than others. The plus point is that the washblocks are practically brand new. Great showers and flush toilets, very welcome after a long hike. The site was not too busy when we were there but we could see that it could get crowded and there is no privacy. No firepits. The tables have pull-out for barbeque, and there are shelters to use with a stove. Lots of ground squirrels and mule deer! The Bertha Lake trailhead is right by the campground. Awesome hike. We also left from that trailhead to walk the length of the lake and took the ferry back from Goat Haunt in the US. The ferry is v. expensive but worth it for the wonderful views, excellent and very informative commentary and friendly crew. We thought everything in the village overpriced. Only one general store but well stocked. Worth walking up to Prince of Wales Hotel. We had a drink in the bar and walked round the lobby. It is full of character but a little dingy and in need of some tlc in places. Very impressive from the outside, wonderful views and lovely staff. The Bear's Hump hike is also worth doing. It is steep, especially on a hot day, but the views from the lovely rocks on the top are rewarding and worth the slog. Beautiful wildflowers everywhere. Lovely area, breathtaking scenery and awesome hiking.
Camping Stay
This was my first visit to Waterton, I chose to stay at the Townsite campsite because of its proximity to town and a few of the local sites. The campsite itself is very well kept, washrooms are very clean, and the showers are free, a bonus!! You can walk to the lake and Cameron falls in about 10 minutes. There are lots of ground squirrels around, so watch your step when going to the washroom, they leave a lot of holes! Town is friendly and laid back and the park itself is a feast for the eye! The town has community WiFi.
Amazing place!!!
We went camping May long weekend as the park was opening up (and yes we were in a tent). We had an amazing time! Waterton is a gem in the Rockies. I've been to Banff, Jasper, Yoho and other places in the Rockies and Waterton is on the top of my list. I love the fact that it's such a small town and there's not a million tourist packed into one area. You feel like you're more in nature and the beauty is not ruined by people. The townsite campground was pretty nice. It's mostly just a big open lot so there not any privacy.. There's only communal campfires in a stove. It's not " back wood " camping by any means but it conveniently located and the views are amazing. Waterton is highly recommended!
Right in the middle of Waterton Lakes NP
This campground has 94 x FHU pull throughs $38.50, 46 back in electric & water $32.30, 97 unserviced sites $27.40, all are gravel. Water taps are located throughout the unserviced area too. The longest you can stay is two weeks and I booked online as I could see the weekends were busy. Booking fee is $14. I could only get an unserviced site as all the other types were booked during the weekends. There were lots of spare sites during the week. I should have booked a mixture of sites so that we had some power. We came in the first week of June and it was unseasonable warm, so the air conditioner could have been nice. During the second week, the normal Waterton weather arrived and it was colder, so a heater would have been nice. There is free WiFi which comes via satellite, so not always usable, especially on the weekends when everyone is using it. There are hot showers in the restrooms. The restrooms are a little tired, they could do with an update. Diesel fuel is not available in the town, you need to drive 25kms towards Cardston to fill up. Propane is very expensive, it cost us $75 for a 40lb tank at Pat's - the only gas station in town. the supermarket is expensive and has limited produce. There are a number of walks you can do from the rear campground which is over the river - Bertha Lake and Cameron Falls, as well as walking around Waterton Lake itself at the front. The campground has some of the best real estate in town. There is lots of green grass and trees and every site has a table. The powered sites have a concrete pad for sitting on. There are also many camp kitchens around the campground, which are just shelters, no appliances, which are good for campers when it is raining. There is a dump station on site. There are disabled sites as well. You do hear some water noise from the creek and waterfall, but not enough to matter.
Great for tent campers
This campground makes for very comfortable camping if you're in a tent. The unserviced loops are grassy and flat, and most sites are spacious. If you plan to reserve one, descriptions and photos of each are available on the park's website, along with maps of each loop. Loop E has an abundance of bear boxes (a block of six beside our site, E27), several picnic shelters to screen you from wind or rain, fully enclosed kitchen shelters where you can cook over wood-burning stoves, toilet buildings (cold running water only) and toilet / shower buildings with hot-water sinks and free hot showers. Some sites are quite close to the lakeshore, but I'd avoid these if you're tenting because they're exposed to strong winds that can come in off the lake. You won't miss anything by being a little further back. The campground is an easy walk to the Falls Theatre, an indoor auditorium where there are ranger talks at 8 p. m. We took in Battle of the Blazes, about wildfire versus prescribed burns - very enjoyable, and kids had a great time. The campground is also a short walk to Cameron Falls, the trailhead for Bertha Falls, Waterton townsite (shops and restaurants), and the marina, for boat tours. The iconic Prince of Wales Hotel perches on a hill opposite the marina. Scenic drives to Red Rock Canyon, Cameron Lake (Akamina Parkway) and the bison paddock, home of the park's small herd, are nearby.
