A great memory of a tragic event.
It was 26 years since this tragic event happened. Very close to Peggy's Cove, we stopped to pay our respects.... 2 memorial rocks in their memory. There was a couple who was there, search and rescue, who explained their side of what happened so many years ago. Glad we went.
Nice Memorial and Park
A very scenic stop. The park is truly amazing as are. the views of the local shoreline. Entry of free parking nearby but is has no other facilities. The Memorial itself is very nice. Definitely worth a stop coming in or out of Peggy's Cove.
Powerful memorial
This is a very thoughtfully done memorial to those who perished on Swiss Air flight 111 in 1998. Its design is very appropriate and impactful and takes the coastal setting into the design.
A great memorial
This is a great tribute and memorial to those that lost their lives in the Swiss Air Flight 111 tragedy. If you happen to be in the area, check it out and pay your repsects to the victims.
Simple, elegant and extremely moving
Three years before 9 / 11, on Sept 2, 1998, Swissair 111 crashed into the Atlantic off Peggy's Cove. This was not a terrorist attack. The plane was about an hour into its flight from NYC to Geneva. An electrical issue was detected by the pilots and they were diverting to land in Halifax. A fire developed over the course of about 15 minutes taking out vital systems. The plane crashed at 10:30 PM. There were no survivors. To think about the last moments of the 229 on board is harrowing. A lovely, easy, short hike leads to a beautiful hilltop overlooking the ocean. The memorial is magnificent in its understatement. Three rectangular apertures carved into granite line up with the crash location site when you look through them. Simple inscriptions commemorate those lost and those who helped in the recovery. Very, very moving.
Worth the stop and the short walk
The memorial sits on a hill just beyond Indian Harbour and above Peggy's Cove. The layout is impressive and manages to convey where the plane went down and the tragedy involved. The scenery from the memorial is noteworthy, and it is well worth the short walk to the memorial.
Time to reflect
We stopped along the road to go to the Swiss Air 111 Memorial. It's hard to believe it's been so long but not for those families and friends involved. After spend some reflection time there we headed towards the South Shore and the Village of Hubbards. We asked a lady where the plane went down. She pointed out to an approximate area. Very sad!
somber solitude memorial
in the middle of the rocks and sub artic plants this memorial is a quiet somber fitting memorial of those who died. even when foggy it is satisfying place to remember. the nature of the area leads to a peaceful feeling and a feeling that those who died would have enjoyed a visit to such a natural place.
Beautiful and Reverent
Such a sad event! This memorial is beautiful and you really must stop to spend some time, not just to remember that innocent lives should not be wasted by hate but so your spirit can fly free in these beautiful surroundings
Flight Memorial
A beautiful site for a Memorial to those who lost their lives in Swissair Flight 111. Somber and respectful location for a monument.
Place to reflect on life
I remember when this happened so sad! It was all over the news at the time and I can only imagine the sadness of the families!Say a prayer while here!
Somber and beautiful
This site is close to the bustling town of Peggy Cove but a world away from the crowds. The area is undeveloped except for a small parking area and path to the memorial. The stone memorial itself, and inscriptions on it, are well done. There is a bench to sit on and a path takes you to the shoreline. The path to the memorial from the parking area is easy to negotiate, but the way to the shore is much less used and can be quite an effort including jumping from rock to rock.
Very moving
I had not been aware of this tragedy before being taken to the memorial with family that live in the area. It is a lovely memorial to everyone involved in the awful accident.
Very moving
The memorial stands in a peaceful location with a lovely view of the ocean. It's a simple but powerful concept which symbolises a very sad and unforgettable episode in commercial aviation history.
solemn place
a sad place. to know all those people died in the plane crash. we did not stay there long but was something to remember
One of the best airlines
To our surprise, the chicken was delicious and the bread is hot. The meals are well presented and delicious. The staff is sociable, helpful, always smiling and ensures that we're comfortable. The toilet is cleaned every hour, which other airlines should follow. Overall we strongly recommend Swissair for their excellent services.👍
Solemn reminder
Happened upon the Memorial while driving along the coast. It is a poignant reminder of the accidents and risks we are daily exposed to in our lives when traveling. Well thought out and situated on the Atlantic coast in Nova Scotia. A beautiful location and not to be missed.
Quick stop
We noticed this was on our way so thought we would stop by, the monument is nice, the path to it is a little over grown so could use some trimming - view is amazing
A nice remembrance to the lost in the crash
This is just off Highway 333, a little ways from Peggy's Cove. Parking area is small, and the trail to the memorial is about 300 feet long. Good view of the ocean.
Stunning
While we could not get close as we were on a tour bus, the memorial is stunning. The remembrance of this horrible event is significant. Thank you for the memorial.
Emozionante
Very nice memorial to Swissair Flt 111
This memorial is one mile north of Peggy's Cove on highway 333. It honors those 229 who died in Swissair Flight 111 when it crashed in the waters off Peggy's Cove. The local people helped with recovery. It consists of a couple memorial stones, some nice benches, overlooking the sea. As others have said, it is very somber. It was raining when we came, and it was easy to miss, so be on the lookout when trying to find it as we almost missed it.
A Fitting Memorial
If you are visiting Peggy's Cove, then drive on about one mile further west and see this thoughtful memorial to all those who lost their lives in this air disaster. It is such a beautiful place for some quiet contemplation and reflection. You can see Peggy's Cove to the east and the crash site straight out to sea in front of you. There is adequate parking and it is a short walk from the lot to the memorial, a lovely tribute to those who sadly are no longer on this earth.
On the Way to Peggy's Cove
A beautiful memorial to remember Swissair Flight 111. The sight is right down the road from Peggy's Cove and has a beautiful setting along the shore. Allow 30-45 minutes to walk down.
Remember, and give thanks!
This memorial, a short distance from Peggy's Cove on Highway 333, is one of two memorials sites which commemorate the tragedy of Swissair Flight 111 on the evening of 02 September 1998. The other memorial is located across the water in the community of Bayswater; the plane crashed into the ocean midway between these two communities, and it's in Bayswater that the unidentified remains of passengers are buried. This simple memorial, of local granite, is of course particularly poignant to the family, loved ones and friends of the 229 people who lost their lives, but it also serves as a reminder to all who stop by at this point of the commendable community spirit shown by the people of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater. The fishermen, many who were volunteers of the Canadian Coast Guard Association, used their boat and gave their time to help with the search and rescue operations. The first thing you will probably notice is the large 111 carved out of the granite. The second thing you cannot but help notice is the truly beautiful spot in which the memorial is located; you will see Peggy's Cove and its iconic lighthouse sitting proudly on the rocks in the distance. Even if you have no connection with the folks associated with this tragedy, at least pop in for a few minutes, to give thanks for the spirit of the locals, your own life, and the beautiful view which will be unfolding in front of you. The memorial is well-signed; there's parking, and the path to the memorial, whilst, grave, is easily negotiable for all (including wheelchair users.
Somber memorial
This memorial is elegant in its simplicity. Stop by for some quiet contemplation and to pay your respects to those who lost their lives on Swiss Air Flight 111.
A place of remembrance
The memorial is a tasteful tribute to the memories of those who perished as a result of the Swiss Air crash. It is an event that Nova Scotians will not forget. A peaceful, tranquil place to reflect, contemplate and find tranquility in the beautiful view and peaceful surroundings.
Not much there
Good place to stop if you are passing by but I wouldn't recommend making the trip out just to see it. The actual memorial is small and underwhelming.
Meet Me Where the Sea Meets the Sky
I've visited the Peggy's cove area and subsequent Memorial site at least four times that I can recall (I may have been here one other time as a child that I can't recall clearly). The first time was with my parents back in the mid 1970's, long before the Memorial or even the crash had occurred. It was a great place to stand and take in the great view of the ocean and so quiet you are peacefully alone with your thoughts. The other visits were after the crash and the Memorial had been built. The first time I saw the Memorial was in 2000. The next time was with friends in 2007. The Memorial itself is simple but poignant. As you lookout towards the crash site on the horizon, you are reminded how fragile life is and you think of the victims most of us did mot know. The design is nicely laid out with plenty of room to roam about and absorb the wonderful view and ponder the memory of those lost. I highly recommend stopping here on your way by. Then just down the road is the beautiful Peggy's Cove, which is another must see on your Nova Scotian Adventure.
very somber place to reflect
the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial was near Peggy's Cove. It was a very somber spot to reflect on the lives lost in the area. I imagine the memorial brings comfort to the families who lost loved ones.
Small Simple Memorial
Close to the lighthouse this memorial overlooking the ocean is a small but nice monument recalling the tragic incident.
A Beautiful Monument at One with the Sea and the Sky
A beautiful and tragic site. Definitely left the place in a reflective mood. It hit me hard that the youngest victim of this tragedy was a 14-month old baby who would've been 21-22 years old today had he lived (I have young kids). It's very close to Peggys Cove, so definitely do drop by here to spend some time in this Memorial. You need to walk a quick and winding (slight uphill too) on a gravel trail to get to the monument that overlooks the Ocean and the crash site would be to your left.
Very nice
This was a Beautiful memorial to lives lost. Great location, close to lighthouse. Lobster traps also visible in water.
Pay Respect
We stopped at the memorial site to pay respect. Not much I can say about it since it's a sad place for a lot of families. It was very nice to stop there. ❤
Atmospheric
On the way from Peggy's cove to Mahone bay. This lovely memorial is along the route well sign posted from Peggy's cove. It also has good parking and a little stroll to the sculpture. There are info boards telling you about the disaster and we found it very atmospheric.
Memorable
Touching history and tragedy in one Very moving Beautiful memorial No HC parking Path ways are in gravel making it very difficult for HC with walkers or wheel chairs to maneuver along path.
If you are nearby, worth the stop
We had been at Peggy's Cove and saw the sign on the highway, so we went. No charge and it is humbling to see this site.
Spend some time looking out to sea
Specifically added this to our travel stops. Off the beaten path. Not crowded with tourists. Great views back to Peggy's Cove and of uninhabited shore in the other directions. Very well done granite monument work. A fitting testament to the hard work the local boatment volunteered after this disaster.
Somber Reminder
Located on a beautiful coastal spot, it's a somber reminder of a horrible event. A simple yet beautiful memorial.
Nice Tribute... But...
We stopped at the Memorial as it was on our way to Peggy's Cove. It is certainly a nice honour and tribute to those passengers who perished in the crash but there isn't much to see. It was a nice little walk out to the monuments and certainly a nice view. However, signs were posted about recent car break-ins so it took away from the experience. We were in a hurry to get back to our car. If you are on your way to Peggy's Cove, its worth a look, but not a special drive.
Moving experience
A very moving memorial to a tragic event. There is a large parking area with a pleasant walkway to the memorial. An information board is located in the parking area giving all the details you need to know. The memorial is simple and tasteful, located on a beautiful shelf of rock, and the views out to sea and to Peggy's Cove are magnificent. Its worthwhile to ponder on the event and how short life can be for some. Well worth the stop.
Nicely done
Nice memorial to this tragic event. Good explanation of why the memorial is in this particular spot. Worth the stop. Good parking area and easy, short walk to the memorial with pretty scenery all around.
Interesting
Having travelled from England, I did not know about this memorial, but our relatives wished to visit and so along we went. It was interesting to hear about the facts behind the memorial.
A Stark Location on the North Atlantic Shore for Rememberance
Free parking and a well-groomed footpath to the memorial. A somber remembrance to the victims and those who were involved with recovering remains.
Definitely 🛑 & check out the Memorial & get some pics
We showed our respect and stopped at the memorial to get a quick walk and see the views Definitely stop it only takes a few minutes
Stopped in for a look see
A very nice tribute to those lost in the crash. Very nicely done. Only a short walk from the parking area.
Bit of a walk on a path to get there
Nice to see that they made a memorial to the flight victims who lost their lives. There was a Swiss flag with a message from relatives - thoughtful.
Sober reminder tastefully done
This is a memorial of the flight that crashed with no survivors. The Memorial itself is tastefully done. The setting is incredible. You definitely feel like you're walking through the wilds of Nova Scotia even though there is a path. The vistas are quite amazing. You can see Peggy's Cove and the lighthouse 8 km away and then the other way you can look down the coast for miles. The landscape is quite unique. It is a coastal area so you should dress accordingly. Proper footwear is required and you may want to take layers depending on how windy it is. It's a 20 minute stop to work your way through the path have a good look around, and visit the memorial itself.
Moving Memorial, tastefully done
We wanted to pay our respects, were moved by the written words and the solemness and beauty of the spot chosen. You cannot help but be moved by the monument. A moment in time, so many souls lost.
Passing Interest but a Good Stop
One must remember that Swissair 111 crashed in to the sea in Nova Scotia. There were no survivors. The memorial is just a short stop but worth the remembrance of the over 230 lives lost. The flight was from JFK to Switzerland and was about an hour and a half from JFK when it went down.
Worth a short stop
We stopped by to pay our respects. It is nice to see that something was done in memory of that tragic event. It is a good monument
20th Anniversary of Swissair crash
2 Sep 18 will be the 20th anniversary of the Swissair crash. Nice walking trail to the monument, strollers and wheelchair accessible.
Sumber
There is a feeling of sadness here so tragic. The memorial plaque is a beautiful thing that Halifax and the people have done.
Important piece of History
Great stop.... this picturesque memorial Captures a very sad moment in history yet a moment that brought communities and countries together.
Very touching memorial.
This is a memorial to the people lost in a tragic event. The location is quiet and allows an opportunity for reflection. There is adequate parking near the memorial, and the winding path from the parking area is very easy for anyone to use... including wheelchairs. Certainly a place worth visiting...
Shout at the Devil
Indeed, I went to this Memmorial either to Shout at the Devil, or to pay my respects to all those that a mere detail made me and my Wife survivors of the Tragedy on the 2nd September 1998. My Wife was by then in the Commercial depart. of SABENA, and I insisted with her for our flight back from JFK to Europe to be the Swissair, that departed from JFK 30 minutes before the Sabena Flight. An arguement between us ocurred as Swissair dido guarantee us the Executive Class, as Sabena entitled us to. Finnaly, I gave up on flying to Europe on the SR111, and we took a taxi to JFK in order to fly confortably as usual installed on the Executive Class of Sabena (The Belgium Airline). It was on the next afternoon, upon taking our car in Lisbon Airport, and switching on the radio, at 14h00 local, that we heard what had hapened to SR 111..
Awe Inspiring
If your travelling near Peggys Cove the Swissair Memorial is a must. The experience is worth the visit. The surrounding foliage is plentiful. The waves of the ocean send sprays into the air. It is a moment to remember and reflect on all the passengers who were lost at sea. A time of tranquil peace.
Desolate
This memorial is right off the road, less than a mile outside of Peggy's Cove. The desolate setting is fitting for this tribute to the rescuers and to those who lost their lives near this location.
Simple memorial for the passengers and crew of Swissair flight 111
On 9 / 2 / 98, Swissair flight 11 left JFK for Geneva, Switzerland. It crashed in St. Margaret's Bay. They built two memorials to honor the passengers and crew of that flight. One is located near Peggy's Cove and the other is across the bay in Bayswater. The one in Peggy's cove is a simple memorial to honor them. It is only a short drive from the Peggy's Cove village and you can see the lighthouse from the promontory.
A Beautiful Memorial to a Somber Tragedy
This memorial is very tasteful, in keeping with the somberness of the event. The area is gorgeous and the mood is very touching. The short walk from the parking area to the memorial is a beautiful walk. The only down-side is that the parking area is quite small. With our pickup we had difficulties backing up to leave. If you are towing anything it would probably be best not to stop.
A Fitting and Beautiful Setting
We drove past this memorial after leaving Peggy's Cove. We remembered the accident and decided to stop. It's a simple design that is very powerful and beautiful way to remember this tragic air accident that ended so near to Peggy's Cove. The setting is beautiful with many wild flowers in the immediate area. When we returned to our hotel, we read more about the sequence of events. A worthwhile stop that doesn't take much time.
Inspiring
This is well worth the stop if you are in the Peggy's Cove area. The memorial commemorates the 229 passengers lost in the crash of SwissAir flight 111 in 1998. The memorial overlooks the area of the Atlantic where the plane went done and searchers found debris. It is a simple monument carved from the local stone. Just off the highway there is a parking lot that connects to a path that leads you down to the monument - about a 5 to 10 minute walk. As you walk down you can see the area where the plane went into the water. The monument is simple yet moving. If you go, pause to reflect on what happened here and the many lives affected by the crash; not only the families of the plane crash victims but also the toll it took on the rescuers and searchers.
A Scenic Remembrance
This is a beautiful way to remember such a terrible tragedy. The paths are very well groomed, fenced and clean. The monument itself is clean and simple with stone benches to sit and reflect. The only thing I thought it could have benefitted from was the names of those who passed inscribed in the monument itself. It's a fascinating story, and nice it goes to show what sensitive and caring people Nova Scotians are.
A place for meditation
Very secluded area that lends itself to quiet thoughts and rememberance. Locals from Peggy's Cove don't and won't talk about this tradgey that they witnessed and were very much a part of... and that feeling certainly translates to this memorial.
Serene, beautiful place
If you are traveling to Peggy's Cove, do not miss going to the SwissAir Flight 111 Memorial. Compared to Peggy's Cove (which is overrun with people and buses) this is a quiet and thoughtful spot. It is It is about a mile north on 333 and no buses were here. We had the area all to ourselves. The Memorial is a reflective place, marking the loss of lives along with the families of the victims respect of the local people who aided in the search and recovery. It is also a breathtaking spot that overlooks Peggy's Cove from a distance.
A respectful remembrance
This is a very peaceful spot. The memorial and the area are well maintained and the clean design seems perfect. This was a tragedy that took many lives and touched many more. The memorial is in two parts; one near Peggy's Cove and the second is a more private, but much larger commemoration located west of the crash site near Bayswater Beach Provincial Park on the Aspotogan Peninsula in Bayswater. Here, the unidentified remains of the victims are interred. All the victims are identified at this site. This is an easily accessed site, and well worth a visit.
Great Spot for Personal Reflection
The Story behind the Memorial is sad but the place is well maintained and is very elegant in its simplicity. We went with our Daughter and Son-in-Law to this location and they were amazed by this site.
This isn't the sort of place you should rate
Swissair Flight 111 crashed into the ocean off Nova Scotia on 2nd September 1998, with the loss of all aboard. Boats and volunteers from across St Margaret's Bay and Canadian military and coastguard form Halifax assisted in the search and recovery of the 229 passengers and crew who were killed, and the debris from the aircraft. The investigation revealed the cause to be an onboard fire. Two memorials were built on opposite sides of the bay to commemorate the disaster and remember the victims. This one, at Whalesback, just outside Peggys Cove is the most accessible. The other, at Bayswater, on the Aspotogan peninsula also hosts a burial ground for the remains of the victims. The crash left indelible scars on the communities surrounding the bay, who helped, and deep connections with the families of those who died. They still come back to this day. Whether or not you have a connection with the flight, these memorials are a simple, yet powerful place to remember that our world is not as safe and danger free as we like to think, and sometimes we are as vulnerable as ever. We remember the victims and the brave sailors who recovered the dead.
Worth a Stop
Just up the road from Peggy's Cove, this is worth a quick 15 minute stop. We flew on Swissair two weeks after this tragedy and I remember calling and talking to the agent about canceling our reservation, but she reassured me and I did not. As you stand between the two granite monuments and stare out to the cold sea, you can't help but feel the spirit of the 229 souls who lost their lives on that fateful day.
Touching memorial
A beautiful, unobtrusive way to honour the lives lost in the SwissAir crash. Both memorial sites blend in with their surroundings.
moving. tastefully done
We have family friends who lost their lives in this tragedy, so it was a somber visit. They have done such a good job of making the monument a part of the surroundings. It blends in with the environment. It was beautiful, and the way they have done the alignment so you can see out to the site was creative and artistic. Moving.
Beautiful
Beautiful Memorial site in a beautiful scenic place. This is indeed a fitting memorial. We stopped first however at the memorial in Bayswater, which I found to be a truly sombre and emotional experience. At the Bayswater site the memorial is equally beautiful, with all the names of the passengers and crew inscribed in the granite wall. It is also the burial site of all these people. It is a very quiet respectful place.
Remember the time.
We visited the Swiss Air Memorial in October 2017 while in the area, good to see it, I remember hearing about it on the news when it happened in 1998 so it was interesting to be here, listen to the wind and pray for those lost.
Same as the Swiss Air monumument
We did not stop here, but slowly drove by the site. This marks the site of the Swiss Air crash into the Atlantic, just off shore from this site.
Nice stop at this memorial
This memorial was put up in remembrance of the passengers and crew of this Airplane which crashed just south of Peggy's Cove.
Beautiful
Beautiful memorial in a tranqwuil spot. Read up on the tradgedy before gojng to fully appreciate it.
A beautiful tribute
This memorial is a beautiful, simple but well done. Certainly worth taking a moment or two to remember the lives that were lost in this tragedy.
Remembering those lost
We almost drove past the carpark but managed to spot it in time. There is a lovely walk to the memorial which is tastefully done. There were several other tourists there but we were pleased to see everyone was being very quiet and respectful. A terrible event but a memorial with a fantastic view.
PAY RESPECT
Visited Swiss Air Memorial. It is a nice calming place to reflect on what terrible event happened there.
Very moving - a wonderful memorial
The location and the solitude is appropriate for such a memorial. A thoughtful place, yet not sad. Having lived here while it was happening and the feeling, stories, and families who were here, I am very glad that there is a place to come and think, pray or just be.
Very thoughtful - stop and pay your respect
This is not a tourist attraction, but a reminder of what happened here. A trail leads to the memorial (a couple of large stones). If you wish, you can hop over the rocks and find your way closer to the water. A place to remember the lost ones and pay respect.
Somber
Such a somber experience. I knew nothing at all about a crash when I was visiting Peggy's Cove. We happened upon this memorial site as we were driving to our hotel. The signs are so respectful, telling the story of a sad and horrific crash many years ago.
Short drive with a short walk
One of the sad events in our recent history. Such a beautiful place to have such a sad memory for families of over 220 that lost their lives in this air plane crash.
Nice tribute
This is an excellent and entirely appropriate memorial to the passengers of Swissair Flight 111 and those who try to recover them following the tragic accident which occurred offshore from this location. The memorial finds beauty in its simplicity.
Do not pass by here without stopping
Swissair Flight 111 crashed into St. Margaret's Bay in l998 and this is one of two memorials. A short walk brings you to the memorial site where information boards explain what happened and by following their instructions you can see exactly where the aircraft crashed. So much tragedy has happened in the waters around Nova Scotia but all the memorial sites dedicated to these tragedies are well looked after.
A must do
This is a memorial that just makes you grateful to be alive. Having read about this and then watching the television documentary many years ago, we were determined to visit and pay tribute, not just to the people who tragically died, but also to the brave locals who courageously helped. The memorial is just so appropriately done and you must take time out to be part of this. Leigh and Scott, Nelson, New Zealand.
Be sure to visit both memorials
My girlfriend is a flight attendant for Swiss and knew some of the people who perished and wanted to visit this site. For those not knowing, there are actually two different memorials that exist. The first is close to Peggy's Cove, and is a simple memorial, in line with what the families wanted. The second memorial, in Bayswater and within earshot of the ocean, is more significant in that it lists in stone the names of all those who perished, and as well is where the recovered remains are interred, in other words it is a grave site. While visiting either one is worth it, I feel the Bayswater site is more poignant, especially if you have any connection to this tragic event. I cannot criticize these memorials, but it would have been nice if the wording was also in German, as this was a Swiss based airline. Kudos to the Canadian authorities for making the memorials possible at all, since the flight was not planned to originate or conclude in Canada, and Canada's involvement was one of recovery and investigation of the crash.
A Place Of Memory
From Peggy's Cove, just a short drive, a place to remember, who lost their lives in a plane crush. The place is interesting but it will touch your soul by it's serenity and peacefulness.
This memorial really tugged on the heart strings
The place is very serene and peaceful. It gave me an opportunity to pause, pay respects and pray for the victims of the crashed Swissair Flight. Somehow, it made me think of the victim's families and thank the brave men and women who came to the rescue for the strangers that needed their help.
Sad reminder
Set on a hillside overlooking the ocean, it is a simple memorial with Peggy's Cove off in the distance, providing a stark reminder of the tragedy of Swissair Flight 111.
Tranquil Setting
This memorial records the tradgey that occoured in the nearby Ocean and is a fitting tribute to all of the innocent lives that were lost on Swissair Flight 111.
Meaningful Experience
Quiet, solemn spot for a memorial to all those that perished on September 2, 1998. The starkness of the area against the memorial's geometrics only amplifies the tragedy. Try to visit 30 minutes before sunset.
Memorial
A respectful tribute to those that lost their lives in such a tragic event. A tastefully done memoial.
Suggestivo e struggente
Toccante!
Very Moving Memorial
The walk to the memorial is very reflective, and once can only imagine what it was like when the plane crashed. Very Emotional, but beautifully done memorial.
Touching
Very peaceful. Free to do and a quick bit to read. Well done! Worth a quick stop. Usually quiet. Very short walk from parking area.
Goede verzorging, schoon toestel
A beautiful tribute to swissair 111
The memorial is actually in two locations... the main site near Peggy's Cove and a smaller site on the opposite side of the bay. These two sites form a triangle with the crash site out in the bay. Very powerful but each site is thoughtfully designed and peaceful. The memorial sites are respectful and offer areas to contemplate the tragedy and remember the victims.
Worth a quick stop
Stopped in here on the way to Peggy's Cove and we were glad we did. Simple but beautiful memorial and a reminder of the preciousness of life.
Very Peaceful, a nice tribute
I am old enough to remember this air crash and the long investigation after it. I had heard that it was very near Peggy's Cove, but like many I had moved on. Seeing this tribute and memorial it reminded me that in any tragedy, there are many families devastated. This is very well done, it caused you to think about how lucky we all are. There is some walking here, but very doable and very well prepared for any person, handicap accessible. The Memorial itself, is very simple. But in looking out over the ocean, very powerful. We had heard that there is a second Memorial on the other side of St Margaret's Bay, in Bayswater Beach State Park. We did find this one also. As it is way off the prime tourist route, it was very quiet, we were alone. This is where many of the passengers never identified, were interned. Again, very simple and very powerful. God rest all of their souls.
Beautiful Area!
Just a quick spot on the side of the road just a minute from Peggy's Cove. Peaceful place overlooking the ocean.
A beautiful, peaceful memorial
This memorial is located between Mahone Bay and Peggy's Cove. There is a free public parking lot and the memorial is a short 5 minute walk from there. The view of the ocean (and crash site) is breathtakingly beautiful, quiet and peaceful. RIP
I didn't know I needed to see this.. but I did
This was a sobering reminder of the tragedy, but more than that, it was a spectacular and tasteful homage to both the loss to the families AND the strength of the communities that were affected. The dramatic shoreline was beautifully honoured by this very tasteful sculptural monument. The surrounding plaques were very informative, and the walk down from the car park gave people a chance to connect with your environment before you had to reflect on the purpose. Very well done.
Simple but Moving
A friend had been involved in the recovery effort after the Swissair crash so our visit was a bit more poignant than some perhaps. After parking a short distance from the memorial, we took the brief walk along the path in silence. We felt that this place was special and we felt reverent. The memorial consists of 2 rock formations that have inscribed messages honouring the lost but not forgotten. The view out to the sea where these people perished can move one to tears. Looking to the left you can see the famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse. We wouldn't have missed this but it would not mean as much to young children or those who were not aware of all that happened here.
