Always a Solid Stay
I stay here regularly when I am in the area. My last stay was over Christmas. The staff was friendly and helpful (as always). There was some maintenance going on in the gym, however there was an alternative gym set up and it was very nice. The rooms are a little bit dated, but still clean and pleasant. I also love that they have a parking garage. Super easy to park and get into the hotel, even with extreme weather. There are a lot of local food options nearby, many that are walk able or deliver.
Nice Hotel and a great location
We stayed at the Westin with friends while shopping, visiting the Henry Ford Museum and the Rouge Truck Plant tour. The hotel a great location, clean rooms and good service. Parking was free and the people were helpful. We will be back!!
Pricey but comfortable
Pricey for the age of the hotel but clean, comfortable and a great central location. Free coffee Monday to Friday but $5.00 a cup Saturday and Sunday. I was a little surprised considering the size of the parent company. Dspite this a worthwhile stay.
Good Hotel
I stayed overnight here and attended a ballroom dance competition the next day. For what I was looking for, it was a really nice hotel. The rooms were very clean, and they had a good amount of amenities (fridge, coffee maker, large closet, extra bottled water, etc.) There is in-room dining all day and night (even into the late night and early morning, which a lot of hotels I've been to don't have). You do need a key for the elevators to work, so if you are there for a business trip and not staying the night, they can give you a temporary key for those.
Midwest business class hotel
Rooms are nice, windows open in rooms, bar is ok with friendly staff, restaurant more on the cheap side (not the prices). Good place for a business visit in the area. Front desk staff appears to have challenges with their systems, and check your bill if you use Wi-Fi. (they corrected without problem)
Someone has been fornicating in my bed!
From the icy reception to the dirty, crusty, and splooged-on sheets 🤮to the strong smoke and marijuana odor in the hallway this place is not recommended! When we realized our bed was dirty we called housekeeping and they handed us a new set of sheets. We didn't think we should have to change them. After discussing the gross sheets and the smoke issue they did offer us a new room. Donna who brought us the sheets was very nice. They offered us a few thousand points, a small voucher for the coffee shop, and water for our trouble. But I'm not sure I want to stay at a Westin ever again! 😰 Donna ended up suggesting a room change, which we took her up on. But the sheets, while not crusty, still looked rumpled like they had been slept in. We can't believe they didn't even offer to comp or discount our room. Definitely not the service you expect for a room of this cost!! And definitely not up to Marriott standards! 😳😱 Confirmation that we are happy Hilton Diamond Members.
Hotel confortável
Hotel confortável, com quarto amplo, bons serviços e funcionários muito atenciosos. Boa relação custo beneficio. Bom serviço de quarto e restaurante também. Para quem fica nesta parte da cidade e uma ótima opção.
Amazing Hotel with great services
This hotel is always pleasant to stay at. Well maintained and clean. The staff gives their best to make you feel like home. Special thank you for Sam (server) he is amazing, kind and generous.♥ Definitely will recommend this place for my friends.
Great Overnight Stay
We were in Southfield for a business meeting and stayed at this property. Check-in was seamless and their customer service was very friendly and courteous. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet; a much needed retreat after driving 3+ hours in a blinding snow storm. We will definitely stay here the next time we are in the Detroit area.
Motel 6 is cleaner than this gross place
Like to pay a lot of money to stay in a dirty place? Do you like relaxing in a hot tub to look up and see dingy ceiling tiles looking like they are going to fall down into the water? Like to go to every floor to find a pop ma June that's full of an ice Machine that is turned on and not full of mold? Do you like bath tubs that have a yellow stain and vents full of dust? Then the Westin is for you! I will never pay to stay here again. The lady at the front desk was apologetic for a lot of it, but when you pay a ton of money for a room, all of the issues I experienced should never have happened. I'm back to staying at Laquinta's, nicer, cleaner, and better amenities. Oh, and don't eat at tangos. The breakfast is super expensive and these cheap rip off artists don't even serve fresh juice! This place does have a great exercise room though. And cottage inn pizza around the corner has great sauce!
Despite the reviews I had a great stay!
My room was clean, I did receive great customer service from check in to check out. Even the housekeeper were warm and approachable. My room as clean and well maintained. I do know of other guest who had issues but that wasn't my story. Breakfast in the restaurant was good as well I preferred the sandwich to the buffet
Plumbing leak suprises
Stayed a night and noted the light bulb in reading light was burned out so changed it with another fixture. The dust was clumped on the bulb. On the bathroom floor still 4-5 18 inch pieces of hair left on the floor. In the morning while getting ready I felt my feet feeling damp. I looked down and was standing in water! I was about to use the hairdryer and stopped instantly! I looked and found the hot water faucet was leaking onto the counter, across counter and onto the floor. It soaked my leather DOT kit and other items as well as my socks. Fortunately I usually have an extra pair but this was dangerous with the hairdryer and would have made for a less comfortable day. I explained this at check out so another guest would not have an issuer and they said they would fix it. No apology! Must be a common issue. Otherwise elevators are slow. Restaurant food was good but I had an excellent server. Room service was prompt and well done. Could work on room cleanliness and maintenance. I rarely stay at Westin's and I was not impressed at the price for the room.
Excellent Location
We stayed at this hotel for one night on a Sunday. We booked on a third party site and got a great price. We booked this hotel because we were attending an event at the new Little Caesars Arena on a Sunday night and this was a good location between home / work so we could crash here after the concert without a far drive and still be close to drive to work in the morning. The location was excellent for our needs. Right off the expressway and within minutes to many restaurants, shopping, even downtown casinos and venues. We were even able to walk to several restaurants. There was some construction directly in front of the hotel that did make it a little confusing to find the entrance. They offer free parking both in the lot directly in front of the hotel entrance and also a covered parking garage attached to the hotel. The hotel is large with a nice lobby, bar and restaurant. They also offer room service. The room was large and had a mini fridge (no microwave). The furniture was mismatched and did show some wear and tear but everything was clean. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. The bathroom was large with some updates. The room was quiet and I heard no noise during my stay. The pool area is very large with several tables / chairs. The pool and hot tub are also large. There was some obvious maintenance needed here, there were tiles missing on the hot tub and many damaged ceiling tiles (water damage). But the hot tub worked great and we enjoyed it. We would stay here again.
除了商業原因, 這不是適合遊客或家庭的酒店!

Nice hotel. Great service. VERY noisy guests
We checked in on a Saturday night and stayed one night. The room was very clean and comfortable. The shower heads are amazing! However, one of the draw backs was the EXTREMELY loud guests. There seemed to be several events going on at the hotel. It was very busy. They woke us up at 1:00 am with their loud shouting and partying, and it didn't quiet down until around 2:30 am. It did not make for a restful night. In addition, the parking situation is awful. Their parking garage is closed, so finding a parking spot in the limited spaces was difficult. I'm sure if you came on a less busy night, it would make for a very different experience. The front desk ladies were exceptionally friendly. So, overall a nice hotel, just a busy night to be there.
Going Down!
The clientele has definitely changed at this hotel. I understand they are renovating and probably dropped the rates to bring in business but all business is not good for your business! The weekday clients are more upscale business travelers. But the weekend clients are basically hood rats living ghetto fabulous who cannot hold their liquor and don't know how to act in public! Extremely loud conversations in hallways, elevators, pool, lobby, outside hotel, garage where they also rev the engines of muscle cars into the wee hours of the morning. The pool was freezing. Both it and the hot tub were in need of a major cleaning as the water was extremely cloudy in both... disgusting. I had to get out and went immediately to my room to bathe because I could just feel the germs on my person!!!! Housekeeping had to be told to change the sheets and comforter which were dirty. Needs work Westin. You used to be the premier hotel in Southfield. You are bordering on basic at best! I was there for 9 days. I had to move in the middle of the night because the ac went out and started to smoke! Repairman said it's been happening and we have no parts on hand. All I can do is move you!
Worst experience from a Westin.... issue still not resolved
So we checked into this hotel saturday may 27 and customer service was wonderful. However upon checking into our room, we noticed the toilet did not work. We called down to the front desk and they advised maintenance would be up to fix immediately. 1 hour later and still no maintenance representative. We left the hotel as front desk advised it would be completed while we were away. When we returned, toilet was still broken around midnight. Once again we called the front desk and they advised that there was a part that was needed ti fix the toilet but maintenance did not have this part until the next day. So we used the toilets on thr first floor, we were on floor 9 all night long. We were told by desk staff because of the issue we would be refunded a night of our 3 day stay. Fine with us we thought. Sunday was perfect with no issues and the toilet was finally fixed. Monday however was the worst. We returned to our room at 1am tuesday morning and were locked out. According to the front desk we were switched to another room 403. This was the first we heard of the issue. We were given keys back to our original room since all of our stuff was there. When we tried to get in the keys would not work. So maintenance came up after an hour and let us in. As the door opened an unknown individual came out of our room intoxicated and walked down the hallway. This individual apparently had access to our room and was sleeping there while we were gone. I informed the front staff immediately of the issue and they advised me there was an error on making room keys and we would be refunded immediately for the trouble and was apologized profusely by the front desk. However as i write this im sure you can guess, no refund has happened. Upon checkout i was told i would recieve a call from the gm about the issue. Still no call. Would never expect this from a Westin. Its a shame.
Stayed here for a conference
Overall the hotel is great. The staff is helpful and friendly. The rooms are spacious and clean. This hotel offers plenty of space for meetings. Parking is free and is in a garage. Valet parking is also available. It has an indoor pool and fitness room. The fitness room is one of the best I've seen in a hotel.
Mixed bag
my husband and I checked in on Wednesday. We were woken up at 6:30 by the fire alarm. we where on the 10th floor so we went down 10 flights along with other guests. once we gathered outside, no one came out to let us know the alarm had been cleared and could go back to the room. No one explained anything. We had to seek information from an employee that was in the lobby. Other issues we had were that our keys kept getting de-programmed and we were stuck outside of our room having to call the front desk several times. The last night we were at the hotel there were several kids on our floor making so much noise, knocking on doors and running to hide. We called the front desk to complain, but the noise never stopped. Sadly when I called in the morning to let them know about the issue they said the manager would follow up with me. IT has been 2 days and no one has followed up. The cleaning service was great and the room itself was great but all these other factors made our stay less than perfect.
Dark and overpriced
I stayed here because it was attached to the building where I had business. The staff seems tired and beleaguered. The halls and rooms are quite dark. No coffee in the room and only room service fees to get a cup for the start of the morning. Not a place I would want to stay again.
Excellent Staff
I have been staying here for about three years. The staff go the extra mile. I love the new remodeling. The phone charging stations near the business center were very useful. The meeting rooms and auditorium were beautiful, surrounded by plentiful couches and armchairs for casual discussion after the conference sessions.
Outstanding staff with renovated ballroom, exhibit and meeting spaces
Our large convention (we had the entire hotel) was treated yet again incredibly well by the versatile and kind staff at this Westin property! Our needs were met swiftly, and the staff gave useful recommendations that improved accessibility and travel flow around the department I was helping to manage. Help was provided at all hours with no complaint, and they worked very hard to keep up with occasional large crowds moving through several levels simultaneously. They have newly renovated most of the hotel (some work is still ongoing but is coming along great) ! Plenty of work and leisure space in the guest rooms. Beautiful shower / bath stone walls. And, unlike a lot of buildings these days, it is possible to open small outside windows for some fresh air on marginal weather days. I highly recommend the Westin Southfield-Detroit's staff and facilities for business, convention, and leisure stays. I am looking forward to my next one :-)
Best Staff I've ever seen
Ive been staying here yearly for about 4 years. This year I ended up booking late and the staff I contacted for support spent days emailing me back and forth to finally help me get a room when the hotel was booked full. I had a great time, the room was clean and food was really good.
Unexpected nightmare checkin
We have stayed here dozens of times over the last 5 years and never had a bad experience until last week. We always book through Hotwire and get a good rate on a great room. This time, because of extended flight delays we arrived at 12:30 am. after calling ahead to inform them ahead of time. They said " no problem ". We were informed at checkin we had a " parlor " room with a foldout sofa bed, in stead of the two queen bed room we had requested. The front desk said " we are completely full ". We insisted on speaking to the manager who was initially not helpful, though after several minutes of hushed discussion with the front desk person, offered us a King bed room. This should NOT ever happen at a supposed 4 star hotel. How does a room miraculously appear like that? I want a response from management. I've stayed here repeatedly because of stellar service. I may never come back.
The Best Hotel In Southfield MI
Kudos to both Zabbieia and Tanya for consistently providing exemplary customer service when I visit. There are dozens of hotel choices in the region, but it's the people that make the difference and it's why I choose to stay at the Westin when in town. Thank you for making a difference. I appreciate you both!!
Just a good place to sleep
Is a good option to stay, in my last visit the person from the front desk was not as friendly as my past experiences in this hotel. They have announced recent refurbishment to the rooms, many floors are already finished. Even tough has been updated, you don't feel the upgraded too much. But definitely is a good option, is clean and totally reliable. They used to have free red / green apples at the front desk, seems that not anymore. During this stay I had breakfast and lunch at Tango's Bistro hotel restaurant, they need a major upgrade, food is ok, but seems they need to be more creative, options are the same from many years ago, or I just have the luck to have the same options on each of my stays. WiFi is very good, stable and high speed throughout the hotel. It is very convenient to have besides the hotel the Executive Meeting Center, very good meeting space, convenient, walking distance you do not have to go out from the hotel, so in winter / rainy days it is a plus. Big parking lot.
Worst experience ever!
I work nights. I check in and go to bed only to wake up to hotel staff breaking into my room. Yes, they broke the latch. Phone never rang and no knock on the door. I don't know what they were thinking. Front desk staff totally clueless. I go out in hall and scream at them for about five minutes. Finally get back to sleep and here they come again. I didn't bother using the hastily repaired " safety latch " as it was useless to start with. They just walked right in. Again, front desk staff unable to offer explanation. I stayed in bed this time. I had my office send a overnight package to this hotel. Spent my Saturday sitting in lobby going to front desk every hour from 10 AM to 5 PM. No package. It was delivered at 11:16 AM and signed for by Barrett. Nice! I NEVER GOT IT. I'm now trying to get it forwarded to current hotel. Management blamed all issues on their computer. At least they gave me a good laugh. This bunch couldn't run a daycare. Never again.
You get what you pay for.... dissapointed
First time to this area of Detroit (came in last minute to go to a Tiger's game) and stayed a Saturday night. Really quite neighborhood, with access to major roadways not a problem. Yes, the hotel is under renovations, no major inconveniences there, and the staff were quite friendly. This is where the " you get what you pay for comes in ". We booked via hotwire, and clearly did not get a renovated room (we were on the 9th floor). Yes, the bed was comfortable but the room was run down (see pics). Beat up furniture, mold on the ceiling in the bathroom, water damaged & cracked walls and ceilings. The bathtub would not drain properly after our showers and became coated with dark brown residue (yuck). Very disappointing for what is supposed to be a 4* hotel.
Consistently excellent
Have stayed here multiple times over the last few years. From check-in to room size, bed comfort, service and overall amenities, everything and everyone is top-notch. It's located conveniently near the highway, yet very quiet inside. However, if you're coming for the first time it's very tricky to access, even with a GPS, as the signage is practically non-existent! If you choose to dine at Tango, the hotel restaurant, ask for Wanda as your waitress. She's the most personable professional ever!
Disappointing visit
The Westin in Southfield is an impressive looking hotel and I've stayed here before, unfortunately my most recent visit was very disappointing. I booked a stay here for a quick weekend getaway. The biggest problem was the construction. Currently the hotel is undergoing renovations, and you can tell the rooms definitely need the update! I understand there is no perfect way to have the hotel open for customers and deal with construction at the same time, but it is something to consider if you were looking to stay here. According to the hotel, the construction should be finished in November. The only issues I experienced with construction was the noise and parking - I woke up a few times in the night to loud hammering, and there were no signs in the parking garage to direct you around the construction equipment. I wound up having to carry suitcases up stairs! The room itself was clean and had it's described amenities, but you could still tell it needed to be updated. The room phone was broken, one lamp was very wobbly, another not plugged in, and the wallpaper was peeling in the bathroom. There was also very poor water pressure when turned to " hot ". It was also sad to see that the hot tub was closed - my wife was disappointed! The only other problem I experienced here was with the Wifi - when I called to confirm what the Wifi password is (it was included in the price of my stay since I booked online as an SPG member), I was told I couldn't get the password, but she would give it to me anyway as a courtesy. Overall, I would love to stay here again, but I would definitely wait until the construction is completed!
Great as Usual!
This hotel is in a great location and the staff is always super friendly and effective. The rooms are always spacious extra clean and any special request granted. You will not be disappointed choosing this location and Southfield. Plus it's just minutes from downtown Detroit. There's lots of decent eat around here too.
Recommended
I think this is the fourth or fifth time staying here. I love the location right off the highway when in Detroit area for games / concerts. It appears they have fixed up a few things since my last stay. Check in was literally one of the fastest ever, which is saying something since I travel a lot. I do not think it took 2 minutes. Room service menu for anything other than breakfast still leaves something to be desired. Cable selection weak, but it had on-demand movies, which I really like. Wifi free. Staff friendly, room and bedding nice. No complaints of any kind. Recommended.
Generous sized rooms, comfortable beds
We stayed here for a family event. We had 2 rooms. The bathrooms were clean and the air-conditioning worked fairly well. The beds were comfortable. The rooms are a generous size. The flat screen TV is small in proportion to the room. The closet has a safe and iron. The lights in the bedroom are rather dim. The hotel service is good. After calling for service, they responded within an hour. The meager breakfast buffet is $11.95 per person. However, when ordering off the menu, I had the best waffles I've ever had. The service was fast and excellent.
Awesome stay!!!!!
What an incredible place to stay! From check in to check out! We arrived in the morning after a 1200 mile drive and Tanya was gracious enough to find us a room immediately, so we could get some much needed sleep! She was very personable and extended us a warm welcome including thanking me for being an SPG member. Being a fellow Starwood employee (Night Auditor at the Four Points Cocoa Beach) her cheerful disposition and willingness to help was the epitome of Starwood standards! We checked out very late that night and decided to drive back to Florida. We were greeted by Hawanya who also was very personable and extremely professional! She went over my folio with me and offered me a sincere goodbye. The room was BEYOND exceptional! The HEAVENLY BED was just that HEAVENLY!! The next time we come to the Detroit Metro area, we will definitely be staying at the Westin Southfield!!! A huge thanks to the staff for a GREAT experience!
Most comfortable hotel and pleasant atmosphere
The Westin is a great hotel! Pleasant staff, willing to help you at any time. The food is tasty, reasonable prices. Two blocks away from outside food chains. Great for meeting a celebrity at any given time, as I met Miss Aretha Franklin and took a picture with her while staying at the Westin Hotel last year - 9 / 15.
Gross... stains on the lampshades, how'd that happen!
In town for music venue, so found the only 4 star in the area. Getting here is quite an experience... you better have new shocks and tires. The roads suck on the city streets. Hmmm, no tax dollars coming in & / OR taxes getting put in someone's pocket? However, I did find the absolute NICEST front desk person ever... Unique, she was AWESOME! Not only did she hook me up for my husbands birthday (the following day) with a buffet breakfast, but me too.... since mine was several days later. She also put us up on floor 11 and a view of the back (parking lot vs. the freeway). Thanks Unique! Room was decent... did not feel clean. Then I noticed the lampshades (see photo). Stains all over all of them. I quickly pulled out my bleach wipes to scrub down all surfaces and the remote. It was dirty, but we got a cheap rate through Priceline, so why complain, or switch rooms and make a fuss. Next room could've been worse... We still enjoyed the comfy beds and the April snow falling. When we pulled into the parking garage... we saw true Detroit... a SUV on blocks. Stolen and stashed in the lot? or just rims stolen? Who knows... Seems to be the place to get married / have reception on the weekends. HIp-Hop, ya don't stop! Sunday Brunch was generous and a good price ($12 if we had paid.) Best OJ I had in a long time. Definitely smelled someone smoking weed on our floor.
Great Service, Comfortable Rooms
I had terrific service from every staff member i interacted with on my trip, everyone was friendly and went out of their way to inquire if i needed anything. The rooms are very large, not much of a view though, you either look over the parking garage or the highway. I loved the shower head and the bedding, both felt high end like you would expect from a property at this price point. One downside was the very small gym, it only had 5 or 6 treadmills and only one decent elliptical (there was another elliptical, but it was very old and very basic) at 6 in the morning all of the cardio equipment was taken so i did not get to work out. The only other minor downside to the property is that the walls, doors and carpets are showing wear and tear, but there were signs saying that the property was about to undergo renovation so those things may be rectified.
Goed hotel
Ik verbleef 2 nachten in dit hotel voor zaken. Het hotel is netjes en schoon. Het ontbijt was goed en de burger in de avond ook. Restaurant zit achterin hotel en was wat donker zonder ramen. Personeel was behulpzaam. Kamers en badkamers zijn ruim.
Not a great hotel, but still acceptable
Make sure that you book through Starwood and be a SPG member or otherwise there is no free internet in the room. You can still get internet in the lobby. I didn't get my free internet at check in, but the staff at the reception desk were able to quickly resolve that for me. All staff members I interacted with were great and very knowledgeable about the hotel, its products, and the surrounding area. Parking is a bit confusing. I talked with valet and still got lost in the parking garage while trying to find hotel parking. I had several issues with the room. The comforter didn't seem to be properly laundered and I found a stain (coffee?). I did manage to get a new one from the staff. Bathroom walls had miscellaneously paint stains, but that could be due to the renovation underway. As shown in the pictures, this Westin does not have a walk-in shower, but rather a tub. I would expect those to be replaced in the renovation. Straws to stir your coffee were unavailable, only had popsicle sticks that had be left in the organizer which clearly had dust at the bottom. I would've preferred sealed packaged straws and napkin. Outlets were minimal, the only available inlets seem to be from a single outlet on the lamps only. One bottle of water was complementary, which is always nice. As at other hotel chains, a free copy of USA Today is provided. One last thing I did wish for that I have recently seen at Holiday Inns is a packaged pair of lysol wipes available to me to wipe down whatever I wanted.
Great Customer Service - Ugly Hotel
Once we got there we were a little confused on the parking. The website made it seem like parking was valet only when in fact they do have self-parking that is complimentary. Once we got that figured out the line to check-in at non-peak hours was pretty long. The poor two girls at the desk were trying their hardest to get everyone checked-in. Once I got to the check-in desk the lady checking me in was very nice and very informative. Now going to the guest room is when the trip takes a bad turn. We were told we got upgraded to an executive room that had extra amenities etc. Well... As you can see from the pictures I attached this place needs SERIOUS updating... I can't believe they would even keep that chair in the guest room. How gross! Also the plug-in's that are so conveniently placed by the bed to charge your cell phone and other items... Didn't work! We found one plug-in in our bedroom area of our room that worked. Then comes the time we are trying to sleep... All night we heard noise from the other rooms... Thank goodness we had no young kids with us is all I am saying about that. End all be all I don't know if I would stay here again... Maybe after renovation.
Abselutely not The Westin!
External interior and lobby was nice and clean. We stayed to attend a wedding at the hotel. Checked in was fast but the room smell of cigarettes. They gave us another room very quickly but I guess nothing is perfect. The A / C room control is broken and so we have to sleep with very loud noise. Quilt cover have blood stain!! The front desk have no international adaptor. This not the Westin that you think...
DISGUSTING!
I got this hotel for Valntines Day surprise because it had excellent reviews. However, when we settled in for the night there was nose mucus on our pillows, food crumbs on the sheets, and multiple stains. Unbeknownst to us, the refrigerator was not working, which caused our food to spoil. There was also a hidden build-up of dust / mold in the back of the refrigerator. We did not call the front desk because we were told nobody would be there after midnight. When we went to check out, there was nobody at the desk. I contacted the Front Desk Manager when I got home, and she thanked me for my " gift of feedback " and she hopes that I'll come back. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone, especially when they handle complaints like this. It was a horrible experience. Thank you, Westin Hotels for ruining our Valentines Day! P. S. Your office chair was not a comfortable replacement bed!!!
Unclean
This was, by far, the dirtiest hotel room I have ever stayed in. I went into numerous rooms, which all had various issues, including smells and dirt. I settled on the least dirty room to stay in. All of the surfaces in the room were dusty. The couch was stained. There were flies in the room and I checked out with insect bites. When I entered the room, the fitted sheet was not fully on the mattress, making stains on the mattress visible. The corners had not been vacuumed. There was even an errant screw on the floor. The floor also had random wires (with both ends exposed so they were not serving a purpose) throughout. The veneer was peeling from the desk, which created a rough edge the I cut my wrist on when attempting to do work. There was even an employee sleeping in the business center on two different occasions. As an aside, in every other hotel, the " green " option means that your bedding and towels will not be changed during your stay. At this hotel, the " green " option means that there is NO housekeeping at all in your room. I am not sure what not making the bed or cleaning the shower has to do with being environmentally conscious, but that is the position of the hotel. Location was convenient. Bellhop staff members were helpful. Restaurant was okay. Conference room set up was good. However, nothing can overcome the cleanliness issue in the entire hotel. Stay anywhere else.
Large property, clean rooms, beautiful
I enjoyed my stay at the Westin. I typically don't stay in such a large facility so I was pleasantly surprised by the large lobby, multiple conference and event spaces, restaurant, bar, etc. I found my room to be very clean and I was kindly upgraded into a nicer room when I asked if they had any " free upgrades ". The bed slept very well and the room was spacious and clean. The shower was nice and featured a dual head, however, I found them to be much too low for my height. There are a lot of comments about this property being worn or tired, and I suppose this is true to some extent, however, it doesn't look shabby in the least. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm particular about the temperature of the fitness center. Unfortunately, this did not meet my satisfaction. There was hardly any moving air by the treadmills and was about 70º F. Much to warm for a 4 mile jog at 8.5 mph. After sweating profusely, I decided to ask the staff to lower the temperature for my morning workout. I was told that they would have maintenance check the temperature and lower it. I was disappointed to find the facility no colder the following morning. If it wouldn't have been so incredibly cold outside, I would have preferred to run outside. I would have given anything to open a window, but the windows don't open and the heat vents that run along the windows were pouring in heat.
Needs help
It would be too easy to tamp down expectations because the Westin Southfield is in the Detroit metro area. That would do a disservice to the parts of the area that aren't dysfunctional and it would let Starwood off the hook for running a needlessly average hotel. It looks and acts like a Westin upfront, with a big atrium entrance, a friendly reception staff, and an efficient valet. But when you look a little closer, things are unimpressive. The hallways are ill-lit and the carpeting is stained. The phone in the room I stayed in appeared to have been cleaned last in 1995. The desk top in the room looked like it had been used as a work bench. The ice machine down the hall sounded like a plane idling on the tarmac. Housekeeping didn't stock the bathroom with cheap plastic cups during room servicing. To some, these are nits being picked but I'm not used to experiencing them at a Westin. The hotel needs, at a minimum, a meaningful facelift and a some focus on maintenance. All is not lost, however. The bed was clean and comfortable, and that's an important detail. The staff proved universally to be friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was well stocked with fresh food and offered made-to-order omelets that were more than serviceable. I would stay again, but only if circumstances demanded it. A better option may be the Westin at Detroit Metro Airport.
Suite Place!
We booked our room on the internet at a discounted price that was unbelievable. This motel was awesome! The lobby was like a mall. The elevators were fast! We were on the 6th floor. The parking garage that was attached to the motel was complimentary with your stay. We ate dinner at the motel. It was very pricey but we didn't want to get out in this neighborhood after dark. We felt very safe inside the motel. It is located in a commercial district of Southfield. The view from our room was a housing project (a very well kept one). The room was extremely large with two chairs in a sitting area. The shower had 2 showerheads and the water pressure was great. The bed was comfy and everything was clean and fresh. There is a charge for use of the internet, so don't connect unless you want to pay. I connected and it was slower than dial-up. I quickly reported it to the front desk and they took the charge off my bill. I had my own internet on my phone so i used that instead. Check out was at noon and we slept in without being disturbed. checkout was speedy and the desk clerk was very friendly!
Sehr freundliches Personal, sehr sauber
Gutes Veranstaltungshotel
Gutes Hotel in verkehrsgünstiger Lage
Felt they tried to gouge us for any conveniences
The price was great through Hotwire, and it went down from there. They wanted to charge us 14.95 for internet, the same price if you watched a movie in the room. There was a small bottle of water in the area next to the coffee maker with a tag on it. It says that if you take the water, 3.00 will be charged to your bill. They had a breakfast menu that charged 4.95 for single bagel and if you wanted anything delivered to the room it was a $3.50 fee plus 18% tip. If this is a business visit and your company is picking up the tab, this would be a great place. The spa was great, the swim pool though was more for wading. But for a family with small children just wanting to see the Ford Museum the next day, I would prefer a three star hotel that had free wi-fi, a continental breakfast, and another view than interstate 696 out the window.
Great hotel just missing the little stuff
I stayed at this hotel for two nights the staff was great and helpful to all my needs and questions. I did not know the area and they assisted me in reccommending and finding places for various reasons. The rooms are very clean and contemporary, I will say the TVs were smaller than expected for this caliber hotel. Plentiful parking and easy access building very secure guest floors. The beds were insanely comfortable and the linens were very soft with what I can only assume Is a high thread count. There were some odds and ends I feel lost it a star, for the cost no free Internet was not cool, tv channels wrrennot that great, and on the tv all the inputs were disbled so no DVD player, camcorder connectivity, or video game consoles for the kids that is a major drawback for me and that's why I dropped it one star. All in all for business or if only for sleeping I would highly recommend this Hotel.
great hotel, good service, a bit far from downtown Detroit
We had a great time staying at Westin Southfield. The rooms were clean and modern, with a nice comfy bed like you always get at Westin. The service was good as well, no complaints. The location is a bit far from downtown Detroit, but the the hotel is a couple of minutes away from fwy 10 and 696, so we were able to get around very fast. Yes, it was a bit quiet at the hotel, as some of the reviews mentioned, but that was not an issue for us; actually you get a great deal because it's not busy. So stop whining and go enjoy all that Motown has to offer!
Bad hotel but only choice in Southfield
Very bad hotel. Limited food menu - no choice for vegetarians. Bad closet space, bathrooms, inadequate lighting in the room. Worst part - bad air conditioning. Radiator malfunctions a lot
Below average Westin - disappointing
Westin's are great -- usually. NOT this one. The staffing has been cut so much that at times it seems like they have closed. When trying to check-in at 9 pm (really not that late according to business travel standards), there was only one staff person at the front desk -- but not for 5 minutes. He was down the hall. Nice but where do you find him? And as he welcomed me back (I stay here frequently but had not been there in a year), he told me about their renovations (ONLY in the lobby) and their new flat screen tv's. But upon entering the room it was clear that the renovations did NOT include anyting else in the room. Room service breakfast reminded me of the very below average Holiday Inn. It was late and even though specifically requesting berry jelly, only grape was brought. While I am sure some readers will think - how spoiled is this reviewer - but when you pay $199 per night plus over $20 for local taxes, and when you consider this is a Westin, you do expect more. And, moreover, when you are in a hotel 4 nights each week, and you do earn significant frequent " sleeper " status at some chains, you do expect more. This Westin did not deliver more. Next month when I return to the area, I will try the Marriott up the road
A stellar hotel with outstanding service!
I can't say enough good things about this hotel. I attended a wedding there and was awed by the beautiful atrium. In addition, the staff was friendly and handled out needs flawlessly. The rooms were large with very comfortable beds and flat screen televisions. They had a gym on the premises and a very good restaurant. It's rare to find this type of luxury at a reasonable price. It's one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at.
It was wonderful
The hotel was wonderful. It appeared that they had recently remodeled. The 12th floor room was clean and beautiful. The staff was courteous and helpful. Considering the nightly rate of $99, this is an exceptional deal. I would stay again without hesitation.
Got a great deal for business hotel with a good 24-hour business center
I was not traveling for pleasure, but strictly for business. I went on Priceline and bid $75 per night for a 4-star hotel in Southfield and the Westin accepted my bid. It would be positively churlish for me to complain! I stayed for 4 nights and it suited my needs to a " T ", with a large, comfortable room, 24-hour business center with free internet-connected computers, free faxing and printing, etc. (However, be forewarned that internet access in your room for your laptop will cost you $14.95 per day.) The hotel restaurant, Tango, is adequate, but not special. The staff is courteous and helpful. Bottom line: Would I want to stay pay $170-$210 per night to stay here on vacation with my wife? - No, I would not, but for a business traveller looking for a good place that is well suited to business needs at a very reasonable price, it is a good deal (especially at $75 per night!).
Superb location & outstanding value
I stayed at the Westin in Southfield recently -- booking a room, on a weeknight, through Priceline for $59. Needless to say, it was an incredible value for the price. (I doubt you could even get a published rate of $60 at too many hotels in metropolitan Detroit.) The room was very, very nice -- with a large LCD television, roomy closet, comfortable bed, and sleek styling. On the downside, Priceline reservations normally come with a double bed, but all they had was a queen -- a disappointment, as I was traveling with a colleague. The other downsides were a $14 per day charge for internet and a small swimming pool. The location was superb; and was about 20 minutes from Troy or Novi -- where many of the shopping malls are located. The Westin itself is located around numerous office buildings and was probably built for that market. I suspect Michigan's struggling economy has taken a tole on their business hence the unbelievably low rate through Priceline. Even though I stayed during a week -- when the hotel should be full of business travelers -- it seemed rather quiet and empty. Overall, this is a great hotel though I am unsure of the published rate. I would definitely suggest Priceline.
Good but some inconveniences
I just returned and overall, I would give the experience a B-. First, we were overcharged for our room during check in. While I made the reservation on Starwood's web site and received an incredible deal, the front desk charged us nearly $150 more and could not find the correct code to apply the savings. Thankfully, we printed our confirmation and she made a copy of it and resolved the cost, with an apology. Secondly, the high speed connection in my room did not work. The tub was clogged so I showered with water around my ankles. Finally, I was surprised by how small the junior suite was. The woman at the front desk warned me that there was no room divider which was fine. I was just taken aback because the size of the suite was comparable to a " regular " room at most Sheratons. I think the photos on their web site misrepresent the true size of the suite. The staff overall is quite helpful and knowledgeable. The room service is absolutely splendid. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in our room and despite the hotel hosting several large events we received our meal in a timely fashion both times. The hotel is trendy with new furniture and accents throughout. I found the location to be quite convenient. It's right off the highway. We didn't do much exploring but there's a Starbucks, TGIFridays and other fast food restaurants within a two to three mile radius. Watch out for that $2 telephone fee.
Solid Business Hotel
Stayed for 3 nights during a business trip. Traveled all over Detroit and though this was a little out, it was easy to get around. It is about 40-minutes from the airport and 25-minutes to downtown. The hotel is part of a business park and a little confusing to get too due to the traffic situation. Check-in is easy. Not that busy in Detroit area these days. I use Priceline extensively to bid and got 2-rooms for $75 / night. Very good deal. The rooms were well appointed and large. There were some cleaning issues in the restroom, but only the first day. The room overall was very clean. Best beds in the hotel industry. workout room was great. New machines and not busy. Pool was great too. Did not like breakfast buffet. Food was stale and had sat around too long. next morning ordered off of menu and it was great. Ruths Chris Steakhouse is just down the street. Fantastic little Thai restuarant in a strip center near the hotel that was an awesome find. Did not have to pay for parking. I self-parked in the building next door and was an easy walk. Good way to safe a few sheckels
Expensive-looking property, mediocre experience
Every so often, you hit a place that just doesn't agree with you. This was one of mine. Minor hassles: The garage parking is a maze. And the first night I was there a high school prom or birthday party was letting out from the banquet area around 1 a. m.; maybe 40 to 50 teens were ungodly loud in the parking lot, and a few started dancing on a car (I'm hoping it was their car). Security guard looked out the door at the noise, hesitated, then walked back inside. Thanks. Bigger disappointments: The pool and exercise room simply aren't 4-star hotel material. Not close. Most of the staff wasn't, either. " Cold " is the best word to describe the Westin - no effort at warmth or graciousness, just robotic / bored efficiency. There are way worse things to encounter in a hotel, of course, but this Westin just doesn't rate the 4 stars.. 3.5 maybe.
Great Value, Period
I have read hundreds of reviews over the years and generally find them to be a reliable tool, however, this is the first time I have been compelled to write my own after reading several good and not so good reviews before booking this Hotel. I typically book 3 star hotels as by best value / minimum comfort threshold, but upped it in this case because of the price of this 4 star. I have stayed in several 4 stars over the years and have only ever been really impressed with the Westin at the Metro Airport. This hotel was not quite as fresh, and some finishes were not as nice, like tile instead of travertine marble in the bathroom, however, pretty much everything else was on par. The beds were super comfortable. The furnishings were well above any 3 star I stay in. Carpetting and bedding were extremely clean and unworn, including hallways. I want to comment that my experience with the staff checking in and out was extremely positive. They were cheerful and pleasant, and very accomodating. I had absolutely no need of any other staff as everthing was as it should be. No missing ammenities, no running toilet. The pool was a little small, but extremely clean and modern. My only complaint would be the hallway noise due to some people socializing there instead of their rooms. What are you gonna do? Anyway, one night in one room does not paint a complete picture, but I will be back, and for the pricepoint would gladly put up with a snooty person at the front desk, or some other slight inconvenience, but I won't be expecting it. By the way, the pool was 3 feet at both ends and 3 1 / 2 feet in the middle, perfect for my six year old to have fun. The Hot tub was integrated into one corner of the pool, so it was easy to keep a sharp eye on my children while relaxing in it for a few minutes.
Wedding Disaster
My husband and I had the WORST experience here, and sadly it was our wedding. We were lied to by the staff of this hotel. When we booked our reception here we were mostly impressed with the decor of the hotel. It was beautiful. Upon stepping into the lobby the week prior to our wedding day for an appointment, we discoverd that it was a disaster. The lobby was a construction zone with dirt, sawdust, workers, tools, etc. everywhere. This was a total nightmare for our wedding photos, a hazard to our guests, and most importantly not brought to our attention until we walked in and experienced it for ourselves. I cannot express to you the anger and absolute disappointment we both felt. Had we been made aware that the hotel was going to undergo construction, we would have booked somewhere else. Nobody told us about this. In addition to the construction, we had a large amount of gifts, guests purses, and personal belongings stolen from our ballroom as well as hotel rooms. The hotel refuses to compensate for this matter and is now being investigated by the Attorney General of Michigan. Please do yourself a favor and find another reception site. There are much more beautiful and safe locations. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I hope my story can prevent others from such a terrible and, unfortunately memorable, situation.
Misled
This hotel's location is enviable, however, the furnishings are too tired ! Their description of the fitness center is misleading, and for my stay it was confined to a few pieces of equipment in a small guest room. (They should have told me the center was under repair when I booked, and never even informed me on checking in.) There have to be better choices than this, so shop here but sleep elsewhere.
Westin declines with the city
I have been to the Southfield Westin a dozen times over the past two years. Although the beds are always extremely comfortable, this hotel is in need of attention to level of service and it could definitely use periodic inspections of the rooms to correct small problems. Virtually every single room I have been in has problems that I think would be so easy to detect and correct: chipped furniture, leaky coffee makers, non-working bath stops, inadequate cleaning, etc. It's easy to overlook these kind of problems when staff is exceptional. Unfortunately, service is truly substandard. In all of my visits, I have only encountered one person, Barbara, at the front desk who seemed really friendly and thorough. The best part of my visits there is when Joe, the doorman greets me and says " welcome back, how is your mother doing. " Now that is what a frequent visitor wants to see. But not everyone is that talented. So, Westin, if you can't get your staff to give great friendly service, then at the very least, fix the rooms. Although the location is convenient, I do not think this hotel lives up to the Westin standard and I have increasingly been staying at other hotels in the area when I am in Detroit. That is unfortunate. Because this would be my absolute first choice. If only management would focus on attention to customer service - greet guests in the hall when you see them and say good morning -- focus on details in the rooms -- fix em. If they do, this hotel will truly be a great value.
Horrible service, staff has sticky fingers
This was a terrible stay. When we went to check in, the staff was extremely discourteous and unhelpful. We had a pair of shoes and a jacket stolen from our room. Not only was the front desk RUDE when we reported this, the manager was as well. We definitely did not feel safe here. I would recommend staying anywhere but here. I usually like staying at Westin hotels. Don't judge all Westin hotels based on this location... they are usually top notch.
Rooms at Westin below average
Stayed at the Westin Southfield over 4th of July weekend. Hotel did not meet the standards that my husband and I are used to from a Westin. The room, though spacious, was in terrible repair. I had read that this hotel had been completely renovated in 2000. Well, it looks pretty bad after just 5 years. The carpet in our room was full of stains and burn holes, the tile in the bathroom was moldy. Front desk staff, although not rude, was not overly friendly or welcoming.
Stay away, stay far away
I am sitting here in this supposedly " business-friendly " room, steaming and utterly appalled. The phone line that I am using is far away from the desk. I am perched on a chair in the room. Plus:The first room I was given was dirty and not yet made up. Barely an apology from the desk staff. The carpet has several stains. The TV reception is terrible. CNN is totally snowed. The desk chair had crumbs all over it. The dinner I ordered for room service was only passable, and the rolls were stale. People running up and down the halls, banging doors and creating all sorts of noise. Now I know why I can't find a Customer Service Card in the room. They must deliberately hide them down in the office! This is the first time I've been at a Westin. I had thought that they were exceptional hotels. At this rate, I would have been better off at a Holiday Inn or Motel 6.
The worst Westin I've ever stayed at
I am a business traveler and have stayed at many different kinds of hotels. This by far was the worst hotel due mainly to the incredibly poor service starting at the front desk and all the way down to the bartender. The room I stayed at had orange rust stains all over the bedskirt. The " heavenly bath " was more like hell. The shower had black mold in the crevices of the caulk. There was nothing special about the bathroom or shower. The area / location of this hotel is shady, it's a very old outdated Westin. I have stayed at many Westin's and this one was really the worst. I would not recommend it. Their breakfast buffet was even horrible. At a Westin you should at least expect a nice array of fresh fruits, meats, cheeses as well as the standard breakfast items. I had a better breakfast at the Hampton Inn in small town West Virginia last week. Good luck if you pick this hotel. And if you do, I'd love to see your review.
A nice three star, but not up to Westin Standards
I've stayed at this hotel six times this year. This hotel is great if you get it through Priceline or Hotwire under their 4-star category. It has some nice things that come with all Westin's, but isn't up to Westin's standards in some other areas. Here are the pros / cons: Pros 1. Very Friendly Staff 2. Heavenly Bed - it is Heavenly (no one else's bed compares) 3. It's cheap ($75-$80) 4. Centrally located - if you have business in Dearborn, Downtown, Southfield and / or Birmingham / Troy, this is right in the middle. 5. Great food in the bar. 6. Ample Free Parking 7. The towels are very soft and supple Cons: 1. It is located on Highway 10 / Lodge Freeway, which is a main artery from downtown to get to this hotel. Normally this would be a good thing, but this freeway is closed until November. 2. It's outdated and so are the elevators and fixtures in the room. The carpets are stained and the fixtures in the room are a little dated, especially the vanity in the bathroom. 3. The rooms are hot - all the time - even in January / February. For some reason, the climate control in the rooms doesn't work very well. 4. The dual shower heads are a cool idea, but appear to be set up for someone who is 5 ft tall or less. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at this hotel for the right price. It's a great deal through priceline. The $200 a night you'll see on their site makes me laugh, however.
Ok, but a little disappointed
I will preface my review by saying that I stayed two nights and booked via Hotwire for $75 / night. The hotel is just average... not the usual luxury feel you expect from a Westin. They do have the heavenly beds & showers even though the shower was the source of A LOT of my problems. Check-in was smooth minus the fact that the female checking me in was not friendly at all. Thankfully, she was the only one who wasn't friendly during my 3 day / 2 night stay. I got to my room on the 7th floor and besides it being extremely hot (it was set at 73 degrees), everything looked good. I ventured down to the bar for dinner... the burger was great, the bartender was extremely friendly, and there seems to be a healthy number of friendly people who venture down from their rooms every night. The burger was huge and again, quite tasty. The high-speed internet is a little strange. I paid my $15 for access through noon the following day on Tuesday night and when I checked out on Thursday around 4pm, it was still working w / no additional fees. Not that I am complaining but I guess it could end up going south and not working to your advantage... keep an eye on it. Breakfast on Wednesday morning was average. The drinks (coffee, orange juice, etc.) are all bottomless which came in handy since I am a big ok & coffee drink but other than that it wasn't anything special. Now, the shower. The bathroom is a comfortable size, I have stayed in Westin's w / bigger bathrooms (i. e. Westin Grand in Washington, DC) but this was fine. The actual shower / tub was clearly not right for the hotel. You have to duck (I am 5' 11 ") to get your hair wet under the dual-shower heads. If you raise the shower head? You don't realize it until later but you just flooded the ENTIRE bathroom in about 2 minutes of the shower head being adjusted. I mentioned this to another hotel guest and they said the same exact thing happened to them. To me, this is completely unacceptable. The shower head should have been positioned better so an average height individual doesn't have to duck, strain, and crouch to wash their hair. The drain in the bathroom sink was as slow as can be. First, the stopper didn't work. Second, the sink filled up extremely fast and then took over 5 full minutes to completely clear out. Pretty inconvenient when you are trying to shave, etc. My second morning at the hotel I decided to just grab a bagel at the little shop next to the restaurant. The only problem? They were out of any bagels that I wanted and only had bran and banana muffins left. Thankfully, there is a Tim Horton's right down the street so I just stopped in there for breakfast. I was down there by 9am, they need to have a healthy stock of breakfast foods which they clearly did not. I was not given a mini-bar key at check-in and one of the nights when I returned late I needed a quick snack and the only place in the hotel to find something? The mini bar. Everything else is closed except for the bar / restaurant but again I just needed a quick snack. I had to call down for a key and they did bring it up quickly (under 5 minutes). Check-out was smooth and she even printed out my boarding pass for me. I wasn't sure if they had a business center and the materials they provide you in the room are slim. Most hotels will have menus for their restaurant (s), directions, etc. but in my binder there was limited info. Had I not gotten such a good rate via Hotwire and this hotel didn't have the Heavenly Beds and such friendly staff (from the doorman, to the bartender, to the maids) I would give it 1 or 2 star but those assets made the stay as pleasurable as possible with the little hiccups such as the shower issues, etc. The bed alone is worth at least 1 1 / 2 stars!!
Towers Towers Everywhere
Spent a week at this hotel (July 23 - 26, 2007) for business. The hotel seems to have been another chain at some point and Westin took it over. Its in the midst of a very large office park, which makes finding the hotel difficult. Its attached to all the other buildings of the park, and so parking is really bizarre, as mentioned in other postings. Further, if you give your co-worker the car and decide to walk, getting to other restaurants is difficult and isolated. If you decide to walk anywhere, rethink and stop. Instead, take the complimentary shuttle that runs until around 11:15 PM. The room was big and spacious. Although much like other reviews, the fixtures themselves were a little dated. I had a bad lamp which stayed broken through my stay. The showerheads were too low. But the desk was great, the bed was typical Westin (i. e. best beds in the business) and the towels were soft. Toiletries were good, but not as good as the W's Bliss line. I did not eat at the restaurant, but had a few beers in the bar. Nice place, well priced beer selection. The desk folks, and more importantly, the doorman, valet and shuttle drivers were very nice, gave great food recommendations, and gave great directions. In sum, the common areas could use some sprucing up, but this was a very pleasant stay.
Nice Hotel
We were able to book this hotel for $75 a night on Priceline which was a fantastic deal. We got a nice, very clean room with what looked like all new furniture and bedding. The design of the room was fantastic - beautiful lamps / curtains / bedding. Bathroom was spacious and well lit and the double shower head was a nice extra. A large makeup mirror, full power hairdryer (not one of those dinky ones) and bathrobe was provided. Room had a pleasant odor - I think they're pumping slightly scented air into the Westin's these days. My only complaint was that the bed was too comfy and it made waking up a little more difficult than usual. Housekeeping was very pleasant and so was the concierge. This hotel offers free covered parking and also makes it really easy to access the hotel from the parking deck. They also offered valet, but the self parking seemed just as convenient and the valet parking didn't seem to be covered. The hotel was very centrally located to downtown Detroit and its surrounding suburbs. It was only a couple of miles away from Franklin which has a wonderful cider house where you can go and get fresh hot cider and apple donuts during the apple picking season. There were also a lot of small eateries surrounding the hotel that you could easily walk to if you didn't have a car. Over-all a very nice stay.
Excellent!
First off, don't believe everything you read about this hotel (well, except this... ha.) I have stayed at this hotel four times and each time has been a pleasure. The staff is well trained and professional and the rooms are simply fabulous. I LOVE the decor; it seems so rich and inviting. The beds are also fantastic. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone who is staying in the Detroit area. Now, if there could only be a downtown Westin...
Extended Stay? Stay Away!
I stayed on business at the Westin Southfield over the course of a month. I was warned by co-workers that this hotel is horrible. However, since my job required me to be in the attached office complex, I decided to give it a try anyway. First impression, all in all not too bad. Hotel looked clean, staff was polite enough, no problems, attractive modern room, great bed, nice workout facility, etc. That was it, downhill from there. Aside from many nuissances with check-in: Week # 2 brought a broken office chair (broken to the point that when you sat on it you fell to the floor, no I'm not exaggerating, literally on your keister). They did not swap it out for two days! Week # 3 I was awaken in the middle of the night by a dripping sound. Turned out my bathroom leaked all over and part of my room flooded. No help from maintenance. Week # 4 I came back from a long day of work, dreaming about my heavenly bed. Get in the bed, only to find a hair extension end up on my arm... GROSS! I am a discriminating consumer, but I am by all means flexible and understand that everything can't be 100% perfect all the time. 3 out of 4 is pretty bad though! My last week, the front desk manager did leave a big bag of goodies for me and a personally written apology card (She was great). All-in-all I would not return here for any type of extended stay. If you need to be in the area for a day or two, take your chances for the convenience. Otherwise, GO ELSEWHERE! If I ever come back to Detroit, I will gladly suffer through rush hour.
Very good
I attended a wedding at the skyline club on Saturday August 23rd, and then stayed the night in room 436. All of the people that stayed over nght, had brunch in the Tango Room, a couple of us, icluding myselfnoticed picture's of the Manhatten skyline with the World Trade Center, Out of rspect for those who perished on that awful day, would you agree that the picture's be removed from the wall. Sincerely, Mr. John Felt
Not good
Stayed here for 3 nights on business. It was a poor excuse for a Westin. The hotel was so noisy that I begged them to give me a quiter room so I could get some sleep on my last night there. The staff was rude, especially in the restaurants, where the food was mediocre, too. The only really great Westin-caliber employee was a wonderful bellman who took the time to remember my name, and was there whenever I needed help. He was a shining star among the rubble. My allegiance to Starwood (I've been a Gold member for 17 years), is really starting to wane, even if it is supposedly the best program around.
Many stays at this sub-par hotel
I was a weekly guest at the Southfield Westin (3 nights a week from Jan 2004 through Mar 2004) and ended up disgusted with this hotel, subsequently having a lot to say in this review. I stayed here as it was closer to my place of work and for the Starwood points, but ended up going somewhere else. The front desk staff are friendly enough, however, my reservations on multiple times were not in order. The rooms are usually dirty; my last stay had the previous guest's food crumbs on the floor, two fruit flies and the previous guest's hair all over the bathroom floor. This was the only time I had insects in my room, but the overall lack of cleanliness (unvacuumed floors, dirty bathrooms) was commonplace. The beds are the standard Heavenly Bed and are fantastic for those loving soft, cushy beds. The food isn't bad, and I have to say, I enjoyed their sirloin burgers via room service. Room service can be spotty - sometimes it's great, but they forgot / lost my order twice and once brought up an incomplete breakfast order. The workout room is really nice compared to most other hotel workout rooms I've been in; four treadmills, free weights, a stationary bike among other equipment. They have TVs there, but I think you had to purchase headphones to listen (I recall a sign stating this, however I always used my own headphones / music source). Very nice locker rooms / sauna / steam rooms. If you do stay here, make sure to request a room that is not on the " Lodge / M10 " side (that's the highway the Westin sits right on) and also make sure to get one away from the elevators; it can be noisy. If your travel plans allow for it, I'd recommend staying at the Dearborn Hyatt; they're both in the same price range and the Hyatt is markedly better than this Westin (I've been staying at the Hyatt from Mar 2004 and will be there through Sept 2004).
whoah, unfair reviews
Spent 3 nights here for the Ryder cup and comments on this site had me leave home with low expectations.... our experience was just fine... rooms big and clean, baths updated and fresh, service people were great, James at the front door is a treasure, befriend him with a ten spot, it is the best investment you will ever make! The infrastructure of this property is old, the new paper, paint and carpet look good put do not mask the fact the shell is old... elevators a tad slow and creeky, but bar service was fine, eric and jennifer do a great job there and the breakfast omelets rival any we have ever had... the westin heavenly beds and showers are all in place... my room was on the highway side and if you closed the heavy drapes I could sleep just fine..... For a business stay of a few nights or an overnight for a family function I would highly recommend....
Not Up to Westin Standards
As a Platinum SPG Member, I stay at lots of Sheratons and Westins. This one was definitely on the lower end of the Westin chain. No club lounge, restaurant with no ambience, not adjacent to any restaurants or shopping. Room was clean and quiet. Parking was free. No place to sit or relax downstairs i the entrance area other than the bar. If there were other good choices around, I would choose them.
Allright, but NOT a 4 star hotel!
First this is NOT a four star hotel! I am usually a 2-3 star hotel type of person, I usually just like a nice bed and a clean room. I would give this place 3 stars, but heavens no not a four star rating. Got a great deal off hotwire for 75 bucks so I can't complain about the price (would have been erked if paid 150 bucks!). The good: It was clean, comfortable and the bed was awesome! The not so great: Elevators need an overhaul, toilet paper holder hanging off the wall, wall paper coming off the bathroom wall, plastic toilet seats - note all things that really didn't bother me, but makes the four star hotel rating a bit of an overexageration. Only thing that irritated me was the staff, some of the staff were very friendly and the other half were very rude. If you use hotwire & spend only 75 bucks for a night I don't think you will be dissapointed (that bed was great!) BUT don't expect 4 stars as they advertise. If you spend over a 150 bucks like the Westin advertises on their website thinking you are getting a 4 star hotel I think you will be dissapointed.
Good hotel near the Somerset Collection - perfect for Canadian shoppers
Whenever I cross the border from Ontario to Michigan to shop at the fabulous Somerset Collection, I stay at this hotel. The location is great, about 15 minutes from the mall, and easy to get to from Canada. On my most recent stay in November, I had a very large, clean and recently renovated room on the 4th floor. The staff was very helpful and directed me to a wonderful place for breakfast. As noted by many others, the hotel is located in an office park so it's not great for tourism. But if you're in the Detroit area for shopping or business, it's great.
Hotwire Price Makes Hotel Tolerable!
Our family of four stayed at this hotel October 4, 2008 thru October 7, 2008. We arrived at 2:30pm and were given room 719 which faces the highway and is just off of the elevators. The Good: Rooms are clean and has some sleek styling. However the room was somewhat " tired ". The pull out couch had stains on it. Some of the wallpaper had begun to peel in the bathroom. The shower head was yellowed white plastic. Parking is free HOWEVER there is / was major construction going on in the parking garage making parking quite a challange. Valet is $15.00 a day. Room service was surprisingly promt and came with the full white linen and rolling table. Tip: Order from the childrens menu. Everything is $5.00 and there is PLENTY of food. It was pretty tasty too. Note that the tip is already added as well as 18% tax and $3.50 delivery fee. The Bad: The woman who assigned us our room couldn't have been less interested in her job if she were a volunteer. No " hello ", " welcome ", etc. They automatically put a hold on our credit card of $60.00 for incedentals. She also failed to mention that you must put your room card in the elevator to get to the floors above the public rooms. Not a big deal unless you go downstairs without your key and can't get back to your room. Our room was not serviced on the first night until I called and requested it. It was finally serviced at 5:30pm and it was half hearted at best. The room service table sat outside our room for 24 hours. The t. v. channels are fuzzy. Final Impressions:' It is a safe hotel with O. K. amenities. It is designed to service the several business' surrounding the hotel. Absolutely average. DO NOT PAY Westin prices! Do it through PriceLine or HOTWIRE. We probably wouldn't stay there again.
What a Pleasant Place! Two kids, two adults everyone loved it!
First off, this is a long review, because after reading all the reviews prior to our stay, I went over this hotel with a fine tooth comb. None of the complaints I read were found. Not one! It was a great stay with not one issue. Don't be afraid. Whatever problems were encountered by those who stayed prior to us have apparently been corrected. Our stay was so PLEASANT! Upon arrival at the hotel the doorman came right out to see if we wanted valet parking. This was no small matter due to the fact that it was 2 degrees and 2:15 in the morning. He was as happy as ever and so friendly. We waited a bit to check in as the desk people were busy checking in a small pack of sleepy HS hockey players who were very new to checking into a hotel on their own. Their chaperone had already checked in and gone up to his room. There were some credit card issues, as some had mom and dad's cards, but did not know what to do with them. Some had cash and needed a credit card for the incidental expenses like PPV movies etc... The Mgr. at the desk was so patient and respectful towards them all. Her patience was impressive. Once she finished with them, I was checked in within 5 minutes. I was pleased to sign the weekend policy which in a nut shell said " no wild parties or excessive noise or you will be evicted. The Mgr. said, " We do evict. " She was very friendly about it, but you could tell she was serious. This made me happy, as I knew my stay would not be interrupted by someone else's excessive " celebration. " We parked in the covered garage and both nights got a parking place close to the door going to the hotel. Valet parking is available, but we elected to use the free parking. We walked through a well lit carpeted hall with automatic doors and entered the hotel. Once we got in the elevator, which arrived in a reasonable amount of time, my kids were thrilled. There were buttons on both sides of the doors. That meant that they could both push the buttons! What a thrill! We arrived at out 10th floor room. The elevators were dated as some said, but I wasn't planning on sleeping in them and frankly, they were nostalgic. I liked the look! It added to the fun and prompted great conversation among our family along the " Remember when... " trail. The hallway was well lit and quiet. I thought it was elegantly simple with nice lines and curved hallways. There was one tray of room service dishes on the floor a bit up the hallway, but it was 2:30AM and that certainly didn't affect me or my family. I don't remember any carpet stains or imperfections, and even if there had been any, once again, I wasn't planning on sleeping in the hallway. Our room was easy to find. Our key card was easy to use and worked the first time. The room was a nice size. It had a very long sleek desk which was great. There was a closet and enough drawer space for our clothes. There was an iron and ironing board. The carpets were just fine. The bathroom was well lit and had all the amenities we would expect. There were plenty of thick thirsty towels. The shower worked fine, my husband is 5'8 " and had no complaints. On the back of the door hung a freshly laundered heavy bathrobe for anyone who wanted to use it. Additional robes were available at the desk. Nice touch as most of us cannot pack out thick robes for travel. The flat screen television was huge and beautiful and the kids enjoyed the Disney Channel. I liked the idea that the wet bar was locked and you had the option of declining the key upon check in. You don't miss what you don't see! The room was a but chilly, but then again it was 2 degrees outside, so I am not surprised. We turned the heat up to 75 and it was better. The heater was quiet and did not disturb our sleep at all. There was a cordless phone in the room. Wired Internet access was available in the room and wireless was available for $15 / day. If you wanted free wireless, it was available in their gorgeous lobby. The beds were clean and well made. They were very comfortable. The comforters were so nice to slide under as the weather was so bitterly cold! We slept well. It was quiet, as promised. The alarm clock was great. It had huge easy to read numbers, but didn't light up the whole room when the lights were out. Nice! We would have eaten there if we had the time. When we returned to our room on Saturday it had been serviced satisfactorily. The beds were made, the towels were replenished, and the amenities that had been used were refreshed. I loved the complimentary Starbucks coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated were available as well as tea. The coffee maker worked perfectly and they provided nice 12 oz. to go cups with spill proof tops. Very nice for those who stayed in the comfy bed too long. Also, there was a complimentary upscale bottled water that was very nice. On Saturday night, we had a chance to use the pool. It was so warm! I liked the fact that the hot tub was a sectioned off part of the pool. It allowed my husband and I to be close to the kids while they swam and still had them feeling like we were a part of what they were doing. The pool towels were like large bath sheets, not the tiny hand towels that many hotels provide. The pool was smaller, but even on a Saturday night, did not feel crowded. The fitness room is right near the pool and I think it's presence helped spread out the people. You can order food and drink poolside, as well. The pool room was clean and as soon as a large party left, there was someone in there gathering up the towels and tidying up. The pool room itself was plenty warm, also. No getting out of the pool and freezing. Yet, it was not so hot that people who were fully dressed were unable to sit and watch those who were swimming, as some members of one family was doing. The fitness room was very nice. Plenty of space, equipment and nicely lit. We did not eat in the restaurant, but took a peek and it seemed pleasant. All in all, this was a great hotel! We would stay again. Our checkout took 30 seconds and the bill was correct. I wish I had taken pictures. You would love this place and I learned it is being renovated beginning this month. Way to go Westin!
Not fabulous - Gym is disappointing!
Booked through corporate travel. Hotel photos didn't match the rooms. The gym was so sadly disappointing. Only one elliptical machine and it squeaks when you use it higher than level one. Of course you have to fight for it right before work in the morning. Rude service at the front desk when charges incorrectly applied to my account. Manager doesn't show up until 8am when I have to be in the office. He's probably at the spa. Front desk agent wouldn't page him.
Excellent place to stay in the Detroit area
We stayed here for 3 nights for a family wedding and were very pleased with the hotel. It is clean, upscale, recently renovated, with a 24-hour gym and lobby with nifty fountain. There are flat-screen TVs in the rooms. The reasons I did not give it 5 stars are as follows: 1) There is no fan in the bathrooms so the mirrors get fogged up after a shower 2) The pillows were flimsy but after 2 requests we were given new ones 3) The in-room safe did not work and despite my repeated requests to have it fixed, it did not work. I do know personnel came to the room to investigate but I had to leave my valuables in my children's safe down the hall, which was annoying and inconvenient.
Nothing wrong with this Hotel
We thoght that the Westin in Southfield was very nice. We travel alot and frequent mostly Starwood facilities. I swim everyday and found the pool at this hotel to be one of the cleanest I have used. It was very well maintained. Our room was clean and the only fault that I can write about would be that our room was not made up after being gone from 8:30a. m. to 2p. m. on a Saturday. It was promptly made up after we called the front desk.
A pleasant comfortable stay
I stayed with my family a few days before Memorial Day. I booked 2 DBL / DBL rooms for $109 / nt / rm directly on their website. Check in was reasonably smooth. Both rooms were spacious, clean, modern and comfortable. There was really nothing to complain about. Heavenly bed, power shower, etc. Called housekeeping for a few extra towels and got an arm load delivered within 10 minutes. All the front desk staff and bellmen were friendly. James was a real gem; he gave great directions and suggestions about places to eat and last minute shopping. The hotel was busy during the week with business travellers and again over the weekend with weddings and reunions. We had dinner at Tango the first night, it was just OK. The server was a little slow in refilling our drinks. I had no problems parking in the free garage; always found a spot near the walkway into the hotel. I used the elliptical and free weights in the gym every other day. Good facilities and the pool looked inviting. I was slightly bothered by not being able to hear the TV without their special head phones. I wouldn't hesitate to book here again.
Pretty Good
I stayed at this Westin for one night and I really didn't have many problems with it. The location is convenient being close to the interstate. The rooms were well appointed, clean, and spacious. The dual head showers were a nice touch. I checked in at 11:30 PM and the front desk staff were very friendly and quick to process my reservation. The weight room and pool were small but had enough equiptment including free weights. The only negative thing was the man in the gift shop was quite rude when I asked for change. But all in all, I had a good experience and would stay here again.
unpleasantly not surprised
I guess I wrote my previous review too soon!!!! I just reviewed my credit card statement to find that the Westin Southfield charged us for our breakfasts at $20 per person. The problem is that our rooms had breakfasts included. We asked 3 times to make sure the breakfasts were included: once at check-in, once at breakfast and once more at check-out. All 3 times we were told that it was included. And they stilled billed us. So now we are in fight to have them remove the charges and they are not cooperating. We will NEVER stay at this hotel again. Avoid at all costs!!!!
Not bad - but not up to Westin par, either
I got my room for $72 / night with Hotwire, which made my stay a great value. Clean, comfortable bed, courteous staff, prompt room service. On the down side, the carpeting was stained, the elevators were slow (I was told that one group became stuck in one while I was there), and my room had a slight musty odor. Had I paid normal Westin prices I would be extremely upset. However, for what I paid this was a great value. Definitely not up to the standards of what you would find at a Westin in New York, L. A, or Chicago, though.
Not A Real Westin
Whilst there's nothing really wrong with this hotel, it's certainly not really a Westin. It has Heavenly Beds (gorgeous) and the Heavenly Shower and accessories, but apart from that it's just a 4* business hotel which isn't really near anything except other businesses. Detroit doesn't really do taxis, so if you want to go somewhere you have to use a chauffered car and they certainly aren't cheap. There are no malls, shops or restaurants (apart from the hotel restaurant) anywhere close by. Had room service breakfast yesterday (can't find any sort of breakfast buffet in the hotel) and the dirty dishes were still in the hallway waiting to be collected at 7pm last night, as were the dishes of a number of other rooms on the floor. The food in the restaurants is okay and the portions are certainly HUGE (typical American style) but I wish they'd have smaller portions of better quality food. The staff are only average and the only person who cracks a smile is the doorman. The staff in the giftshop won't smile at you at all or engage in conversation as they're too busy watching TV. I'm guessing they're a third party concern. Housekeeping is also very slap dash. The rooms aren't really cleaned properly each day, though they're not dirty, just not the Westin standard. The turndown service seems to consist of them opening the door, throwing a " tomorrows weather forecast " card on your unmade bed and then leaving the room. There is a sign displayed behind the registration counter that this hotel is run under license from Westin, so let that be your warning. It's certainly not the Westin standards that we're used to (and we stay in them a lot, we're Platinum).
Lousy service
This hotel was the worst hotels i have stayed in for its price range I am a Starwood member and travel for work. I had to change rooms because the first one had stains all over the carpets. The staff was rude when i asked for a new room and told me they were busy and i would have to wait for a new room to be cleaned. This did not surprise me because the next day the room was not made up till after 3:00. We had freezing rain that night and they only salted the sidewalks after someone fell. The rooms are small and poorly cleaned. I will never stay at this place again
Overall pretty good, but not outstanding
Parts of the hotel are dated, but overall still a very nice place to stay. I got a very good rate and certainly do not have complaints. The bar served us a good lunch for a moderate price. The room was comfortable and well kept. The hallways, elevators, and elevator landings could use a remodel. I would not pay full price for this Westin.
Nice staff, good beds, everything else is blah
This is a decent Westin with nice beds, quiet rooms. The parking is free but weird. As soon as you see the Avis signs, park in a non-Avis spot. The Avis office is at the front of the parking lot entrance to the hotel. Internet is outrageously priced.. $15 / day. Food is not good.. you'll have to eat somewhere else.. but there are restaurants in close driving distance. nothing in walking distance
Just fine...
I ended up with the room for $79 through Hotwire and was terrified after reading the reviews here. I was pleasantly surprised when I got there, though. The hotel is in an office park with lots of free parking (stark contrast to the Chicago Westin where we stayed the night before). The lobby / elevators / etc arent incredible but were just fine, and the room was just as nice as the Chicago Westin. We were completely satisfied with the whole experience from beginning to end (outside of their nerve to charge $2 for a toll-free call).
Its Detroit - Whatdaya want
As someone who has stayed in numerous hotels in the Detroit vicinity, I have to give this one an above average score. That is mainly because most Detroit establishments, no matter what the good or service (and I use the term very loosely), are subpar compared with most other large cities in the country. I stayed there through the weekend of October 2, 2004. My room was clean and orderly upon check-in. I noticed no crumbs, bugs or stains anywhere in my room. In fact, I thought the contemporary furnishings were quite nice. The " Heavenly Bed " did in fact turn out to be extremely comfortable. The internet access worked as it should have and room service was much quicker than I expected. The hotel facilities are very well stocked, clean and accessible. There is a connected parking garage behind the hotel which I was not charged for. All in all, this Westin was the best hotel of this category I have ever stayed in near Detroit. To be fair, I must mention that in addition to having experienced numerous subpar " 3 and 4 star " hotels in the area, thanks to Priceline I only paid a total of $63 per night for my stay at this hotel. I would imagine that if I were silly enough to pay $150 or more per night for a hotel my expectations might be more extreme.
