Where is the Lettuce in the Taco Salad

This local Mexican restaurant is usually well received by the residents. However, this time was under whelming. The taco salad was missing the lettuce. It was horrible with only hamburger, refried beans and topped with cheese, guacamole and sour cream! The taco dip was awesome with nice flavor and chunks of tomato and not too spicy hot! The chicken Casadia was ok and the shrimp was excellent. I would suggest that the owners review how they make taco salads and add lettuce!

Great find near Clemson!

Stopped for lunch while exploring the area. Tasty and truly authentic food and our server " Mari " was wonderful! She took time to answer our many questions and made our stop even better - AND she makes a dandy pina colada. Salsa bar with a decent selection, including tomatillo sauce. Out of the three Mexican spots we tried around Clemson, this is far and away the best. Highly recommend this place!

A nice surprise

Lunch service was prompt, but not rushed. They immediately brought us a bowl of chips and salsa along with the menus. I ordered the Cancun salad with lettuce, cooked shrimp, and mushrooms, tomatoes and melted cheese. It was delicious and some of my companions said they'd try one the next time they ate there. They ordered a taco salad, and a burrito. Prices were reasonable.

Loved it

Great salsa and chips prior to a meal + a great waitress always signals excellent Mexican food. They delivered on all. We had 10 guys that raved about all choices. And DO NOT MISS THE FLAN. That's worth visiting the restaurant by itself. Dining outside due to covid 19 was no problem. You'll like this joint.

Great menu, worth the wait

Menu very deep, many choices, service was friendly and quick. We went on a Saturday night and restaurant a little un-tidy, tables not wiped down, bathrooms a wreck but food was very good.

Camarónes Equivocado (shrimp done wrong)

Of the four of us, we ordered one order of Camarones Diablo, that would be Devil's Shrimp, and one order of Camarones Diablo medium Mild. When the waiter brought the food, we pointed out both plates were just shrimp, and that the order was Camarones Diablo. The waiter said " we have lots of hot sauces on the sauce tray, help yourself. You won't notice the difference. " Right. If we wanted Shrimp boring, we could have ordered it that way. To be told to go to the sauce tray, and we wouldn't know the difference... WTHeck? I paid for the meal, but I won't be back. The 30 year old women waitress was excellent, but she never came back to check the order after it was served by Mr I don't give a cr*p.

Great food great price

We really enjoyed our trip to Vaqueros. The food was great and service was excellent. Don't miss the salsa bar. It's fantastic!!!

Tasty food for the money

Relaxed atmosphere, good food and great salsa bar. Very friendly staff! Great place for lunch or dinner, close to Clemson and in the heart of downtown Pendleton.. Some outdoor seating facing the square.

Always a hearty meal with a nice price

Another great place on the square that is just 5 minutes from Clemson. Food is standard Mexican and affordable prices so we go now and then just to change up our meals. Always friends service.

Dont Bother if you are looking for authentic

My wife and I are always looking for authentic ethnic restaurants and were sadly disappointed here. They are probably real good if you want an americanized version of this type of food but it was very disappointing to us.

Should've Passed

My wife and I were at Clemson and looked up local restaurants and this one caught our eye because of some of the pictures posted online. We arrived and we seated quickly. We were the only people at the restaurant at the time. We had chips and refried beans placed on our table, but no greeting or any other information. I am used to receiving salsa and chips when going to a Mexican inspired restaurant, but they had a salsa bar that we weren't told about until after we ordered. The salsas were not labeled and was not appealing. Our order was taken and drinks served, but most of the staff were on their phones sitting at empty tables. Our food came quickly, but was rather bland and typical. Small portion of main dish filled in with beans and rice. The atmosphere was dead except for a tv playing the local news. Would not return.

Consistently rude service and mediocre TexMex food

About once a year, my wife and I forget our previous experiences in Vaqueros and return. Usually we get seated and sometimes get through at least part of our dinner before something happens that spoils the moment... Sometimes it's just slow, inattentive service; one time, it was the wait staff cranking up the TV and beginning to mop the dining room we were in. This last time, we walked in and were pointed to a booth beside a family with several children, a couple of which were crying / yelling. We asked to sit in the other room, where a couple of other tables were occupied and the manager refused to seat us there. I said that we really didn't want to have to listen to noisy children through our dinner. He said, " This is a restaurant. " That's it. No more second, third, fourth, or whatever count of chances we were up to. Never again! Pendleton needs a good Mexican restaurant (or Vaqueros needs new management) !

Best Mexican restaurant in the area

Vasqueros is by far the best Mexican food anywhere in the area. They have a great salsa bar and it complements the fresh made tortilla chips perfectly. So if you are in the Pendleton area do yourself a favor and stop in and get some great food with friendly, attentive hosts. You won't be disappointed.

Ordinary Mexican Restaurant

We usually meet at Vaqueros for tabulation of the Clemson Christmas Bird Count and the experience is always the same. Poor food and poor service! The California Burrito I had was ok, not much taste and the chicken was over cooked. The restaurant was not too busy but difficult to get any service from the wait staff. We need to try the restaurant sometime when we are not with a large group and see if the food and service are better.

Authentic Mexican food

Our family met local friends at this restaurant. The menu was extensive-maybe a bit too many choices. Our food was good. Very quick service. Our drinks were good, maybe not the best. Our dinner with drinks for seven was less than 70 dollars with a 20 percent tip!! One odd thing there was no salsa on the menu at all or served. Maybe I am used to Americanized Mexican?? Looking for Mexican in the middle of the south? Give it a try.

Meets and exceeds expectations

This is the best Mexican restaurant I have found in the area. An authentic Mexican restaurant with great variety in their menu. Very reasonable from a price standpoint. If you enjoy Mexican food, give this place a try.

Vaqueros Mexican Is Good

I had a bean burrito for lunch today with an extra side of quacamole. The guacamole went with the buritto and the chips and was worth the extra charge for it.

Fast, fresh mexican food, locally owned family run restaurant

This place is a gem for the Pendleton area. The restaurant is family owned and operated and they are long time supporters of the town and community. The food is always hot and freshly prepared. It is standard Americanized Mexican food with some real standouts. The chicken soup is amazing and is prepared fresh each day. There is a fresh salsa bar and they prepare each salsa daily from fresh ingredients. I often enjoy the chori-pollo or the cazuelon which is a lot of food for a hearty appetite. They offer a large menu and something for everyone's taste. They regularly have food and drink specials and there is plenty of seating.

2017-04-25 04:15:11

Mediocre, at best

The other two members of my party seemed to enjoy the food--at least they ate it--but I found it lacking in quality and flavor.

2017-04-23 14:21:59

Won't be back

Watch the owner? make the margarita mix and dilute it with quarts of water in a large 5 gallon bucket then dip quart pitcher directly into the mix to sit on the bar. The triple sec, tequila and grand Marnier was added of course but we didn't like seeing the water added and the fact the pitcher was being dipped and set on the bar. The surface of the bar was filthy and we waited quite a while to get served. The salsa bar need attention.

Off the Interstate, but nice

My wife and I were planning on having lunch at the Smoking Pig, only to discover it is not open on Mondays. We pressed on into Pendleton looking for the Palmetto Distillery only to discover they had closed their Pendleton location. Hungry and getting grumpy, we stumbled onto Vaqueros and decided to give it a try. Great decor and much larger than it looks from the outside, the restaurant was a pleasant surprise. The food was typical Mexican restaurant fare, nothing to brag about, and the service while adequate, did not make feel really welcome. My wife suspects her margarita was from a mix and the salsa tasted like something from a bottle. Reading my review, I now wonder why I gave Vaqueros 4 stars. I think it was the decor and the fact that it was the bright spot in a disappointing side trip. If you are in town, it is worth visiting. It is not worth the trip off I85.

Awesome Food!!!

Visited with some friends from work for lunch. Make sure you get some of the white ranchero sauce when you visit the salsa bar. It's OUTSTANDING!!!

Excellent salsa bar!!

We have been coming to this restaurant for years and just recently they added a salsa bar! Excellent!! We love Vaqueros' overall service, ambiance and food selection. Good margaritas too! Visit them on the square when you are in Pendleton! You won't regret it.

2016-06-15 23:48:33

Nice little Mexican cafe on The Square

The menu here is similar to many mexican restaurants in the area. What sets Vaqueros apart is their salsa bar with many choices of unlimited salsa which you can enjoy before your entree arrives. Smaller than most mexican restaurants but seldom really crowded.

Good Food on the Square

We asked a local about a good place for lunch and El Vaquero was recommended. Good call! My husband had the Chiles poblanos, which had chicken as well as cheese and he was impressed. I had the Quesadilla grande, which was basically a chicken fajita quesadilla with a cheese sauce on top. It was all good food and good value. They have a salsa bar.. which could have been spicier for our taste but there was a bottle of habanero sauce at the table for cranking it up if we had really thought that necessary.

Family Owned and operated plus very good food

I have been going to Vaqueros the past 3 yrs. Over the past few months they have updated the decor and the taste of the food. Before the food was hit or miss, but lately everything has been very good from the nachos, Chori Pollo, shrimp quesadilla, salsa, etc. The mugs for the beer are always frozen, which is a plus for me. They have Dos Equis, Bud Light, and Michelob ultra on draft. The service is usually fast, and the owner is always stopping the table to see if we need anything. To me it is now the best Mexican restaurant in the area. The prices are pretty normal for a Mexican restaurant.

Great Mexican food in Pendleton

They have very good food. Good, fast service. We've liked everything we've gotten there. Great place to eat in Pendleton.

great food

the food is really really good and it is really a family owned establishment i honestly would be back

2015-08-05 12:06:18

Very good Mexico food

Good food with a large selection. I work nearby and eat lunch here regularly. They also have a bar in the back that is good for an after-work get-together. The Texas Nachos are awesome.

2015-07-12 16:10:17

Really good!

We ordered the special fajitas for two and were not disappointed! It had beef, chicken, sausage, and shrimp! The service was prompt and good. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with a small outside section.

2015-07-01 16:56:46

Really want to support this restaurant, but

This place is consistent in its food - which is bland and uninspiring. I am guessing they prepare food ahead of time and my request for grilled onions added to a cheese quesadilla has only once resulted in onions on and not on a plate beside. I know it sounds picky, but how hard could this be - this is not a busy place. The waitress, who is the owner too, seems very unhappy and certainly not very accommodating or pleasant.

Like family

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant since moving into the area two years ago. All of the meals are well prepared with fresh ingredients. Owners and the staff are very nice and attentive. Margaritas are very tasty. Guacamole is nicely done. The menu is extensive and the prices are inexpensive. We have never been disappointed.

2014-11-14 12:13:36

This place is favorite of Clemson students- and ours too!

This place was great- a bit outside Clemson proper and so not crazy crowded on a football weekend. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we were served almost as we sat down. The margaritas were exactly as we like them. Food was authentic and cheap. Glad we finally tried it.

TYPICAL

Typical is the only real wortd necceasary, standard Americanized menu seems the numbers and order of the menus even match. service was stellarr and the restaurant had a good ambiance. once you past that your back to square one. not worth a second trip.

Great Beef Fajitas

Found this place a few weeks ago by chance while looking for something else nearby. Decided to give it a try. The salsa & chips was good. My favorite thing is the fajitas, Great!! We have already been back for more! Very friendly wait staff & owner.

Gone DownHill

I have been visiting this restaurant since it open. When it first opened it was excellent an I really enjoyed the food. Over the past few years they have Americanized there recipes and have taken a lot of the flavor out of the recipes. The tamales are made of chicken now instead of pork - bad move. I ask about that on my last visit and was told that the customers did not like the pork. I suspect it may be more cost. At any rate, I will not recommend the restaurant because they have lost the real Mexican flavor in their food. Also the salsa has no bit to it. Not liking the experience!
