Fresh Jamaican food!

This hidden gem of a restaurant is super good! We drove by it and decided to give it a try, much to our pleasure. The food is fresh and well-cooked, the staff are super friendly, and the restaurant's ambiance is welcoming and non-stuffy. I really like the patties and the jerk chicken.

Truly Jamaican Cooking

Fantastic Jamaican cooking. The oxtail is so very good as well as the dumplings! 5* each. Takeout or eat in this is well worth seeking out if you enjoy truly authentic Jamaican food!

Shrimp Roti - Disappointment

I had the shrimp roti: AWFUL!!!! I have no idea what they used for flavoring and it was soupy! They separated the roti bread from the shrimp and the roti bread was like a dried out Mexican tortilla wrapped tightly in foil. The shrimp- which were farm raised- were small and flavorless and were thrown into a small container that was not spill-proof!!!! They had the nerve to charge $12 for it!!!!!! The coco bread was rock hard and smaller than other restaurants in the area. The plantains were overcooked, chewy and not sweet at all. What a waste of money! I don't understand all the hype about this place???? Won't be returning unless desperate.

Wow!

I don't usually write reviews but wow! The jerk chicken was one of the moistest pieces of meat I've ever had. The plantains were amazing and I've never had Coco bread and beef patties... So good. It was so good we talked about it for the rest of the night. And the woman serving us was so sweet! She knew we were in a rush and ran around to make everything happen. Even after we kept ordering more food (because it was so good). And prices were super reasonable. More food than I could eat and something to take home for less than $15. Definitely coming back and ordering in when I need some good cheap comfort food.

Not bad, but wish they had jerk pork

Came here for big take out orders a couple of times recently. There seems to usually be a crowd, but the line moves fast. We sampled the jerk chicken, goat curry, brown stew chicken and kingfish, along with the chicken patties and fruit cake. The rice was dry - maybe we would have asked for gravy? The jerk chicken had a great jerk flavor that permeated the chicken. The brown stew chicken was very flavorful, but mostly bones - not a lot of meat. Goat curry was delicious! Husband not crazy about the kingfish. Patties were great and fruit cake was out of this world delicious! Would go back, but big disappointment that jerk pork not on the menu. Can park out front or in the empty lot next door.

Good food and great people

Great place to pick up food that is slightly different than " the norm "... and the staff is absolutely amazing.

Authentic Jamaican

Dunns River was recommended by a Jamaican friend. We thought we knew good Jamaican food but were re-educated. Dunns River has a large menu, a nice place to sit down and a really good business, there was a continuous line for food while we were there. The jerk chicken was great and the plantains a great side. The conch soup that is served on Friday different than Bohemian conch chowder, it is good, different but good.

Restaurant Review

Authentic Jamaican cuisine, plentiful portions, mostly take-out atmosphere, but with seating for eat in guests.

Friday night take out

Good Jamaican food at a decent price not much more you can ask for. Curry chicken for me and jerk chicken for the wife. Really nice portions we both got a medium which was more than enough. The rr are sample portion size containers on the wall. If from out of town you're not going to eat in downtown Hartford but parking is right out front and it was a good experience. The line to order was long but service was quick and there wasny much of a wait for the food. I'll probably be in the area next year and this place will definitely be getting my business.

Best Jerked Chicken

Take it from a guy who knows food, this place worth the trip! Jerk chicken was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Seasoned perfect, plantains were great. Rice and beans done just right.

Loved everything!

Such a hearty delicious meal! Jerk chicken, oxtail beef, and curried goat to share among us. Jamaican music, a welcoming and helpful server with the most beautiful accent, and a relaxed atmosphere. Loved it all! The restaurant has table service and carryout. While we were there many people came in for to-go orders. It's a popular place!

GREAT FOOD

Stumbled across this (on Trip Advisor). Figured I haven't had Jamaican Food.. let's give it a try. Arrived on Sunday at 11am. Lots of people already there. Order at the counter A Medium was BIG. Jerk chicken was FANTASTIC. Just the right amount of spice. I also tried two bites of the sweet and sour chicken. They had lots of fish options.

Hidden gem in Hartford

I don't profess to be an expert on Jamaican food, so I can't speak to the authenticity of the food. I can, however, speak to it's deliciousness. I had the rasta pasta, and I couldn't believe how fresh and tasty it was. The vegetables were perfectly cooked... crisp and flavorful. The jerk chicken on top brought so much flavor to the whole dish, but this would actually still be great as a vegetarian option. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are large. There are a number of sizes available to fit all appetites.

Yummy Jerk Chicken. Generous Portions

Friendly people and fantastic food. Check them out! Travelling from Baltimore, MD to Chesterfield, NH. Will certainly return when homeward bound.

Authentic Jamaican Cusine

This restaurant is a hidden gem! The food is traditional Jamaican and the quality is superb! I chose take out because the sit down area is very small and exposed BUT if you get there early and can get a seat up front you should be fine. Their curried goat and jerk chicken is the best in the area. The serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Good food / very reasonable prices

We ate here twice. I had pepper steak the 1st time and jerk chicken the 2nd time. A small order is PLENTY of food. The food was good. The place is VERY busy. Service was good.

Loved the Jerk Chicken!

Authentic Jamaican food at last! I loved the Jerk chicken with rice and peas, plus plantains. I lived in JA for 5 years and I am always looking for authentic food, and now I have found it! Huge portions too, ordered the medium size, and took half of it home. Would definetely recommend it!

Awesome food cooked the right old fashioned JA way!!!!

Wow !!! We have been trying to find a REAL Jamaican cooking restaurant for years. The staff was wonderful / polite and friendly. Great service. The variety of dishes was also great. Perfectly placed right off the exit near the highway. Wished we had found this place sooner. We will definitely be back. Bogle clan 🇯🇲

Fantastic Jamaican food

We recently heard a out Dunns River so we decided to get take out for dinner. We were not disappointed. We had a fish dish, chicken, wings and the last meat pie available. Many delicious sides. Everything was delicious and everyone was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend paying Dunns River a visit for great Jamaican food in Hartford.

Terrific Jerk Hidden in Hartford

I was working nearby and needed something close and happened to pass by Dunns River and stopped in. Got the Jerk Chicken plate with rice and peas. It comes in three sizes and I got the small and it was more than enough. They were out of cocoa bread sadly, but the waitress did offer fried dumplings for free as a consolation. They were fine, but no cocoa bread. If you're in the mood for some fall off the bone jerk with a nice spice, then you should definitely stop by.

Get There Before the Patties Are Gone

I love the Curry Chicken here! My husband always get the Oxtail. Tough we've tried other items we always go back to what we love. Prices are really reasonable and portions are BIG. A varied selection of patty flavors, all are yummy and plantains delish. Very casual atmosphere have never eaten in have only taken home. We eat from there at least 3-4 times per month.

Ya Mon!!!

I am someone who grew up in a household where my mom (first generation emigrated from Jamaica to USA) cooked this type of food every single day throughout my childhood. And even in my young adult years, my mom still cooks like this during holidays (but has to scale back on the spices for my dad's sake), holding true to her Jamaican roots. That is what this food tastes like, authentic, " yaad style " cuisine cooked with lots of love. Not only is the service impeccable, there is a carry out option. The portions are so generous, a medium-sized dish will feed you for two days by yourself, or it can make for dinner for two. And if you opt for your own dish, for less than your typical take out meal (dinner for two costs close to $20) you will be well fed. Hands down this is unequivocally the best Jamaican restaurant this side of the river. If you want better food, you would have to go to Jamaica yourself (or come to my moms, but that isn't an option) !

Jamaican Cuisine at its BEST!

Not many Jamaican restaurants serve breakfast so finding one that does and does it well is a bonus. The atmosphere is very casual and the food is excellent, and the portion sizes are ample. You won't leave hungry. While we were there on Saturday, there was a steady stream of patrons, some opting to eat in the dining area but most were take-out. The menu was full of traditional Jamaican breakfast items with an extensive lunch and dinner menu and sides. Can't wait to go back!

Great Jamaican Food

Great Jamaican food. Had the oxtails and jerk chicken. Prices are reasonable and service is fast. Check it out if you get a chance.

Very Good Jamaican Food

Great Jamaican food near many other Jamaican restaurants. I have eaten here more times than i can count. My favorites are curry goat, oxtail, soup, and steamed fish. Also the $5 Fried Chicken with Stew Chicken Gravy has been a life saver on days where the family needed a cheap meal!

Like I went to Jamaica for dinner

This is quite possibly the best Jamaican food I've ever eaten and I been to Jamaica almost 90 times. This place is as authentic as it gets. If I moved to CT I'd be wanting to drive here every single day. Can't wait to go for breakfast tomorrow morning! My mouth is literally watering as I write this. The menu was large and you can get most meals with rice or boiled food like yam, sweet potato, dumpling, etc. so glad I now know about this place. It's mostly takeout but they got plenty of tables to eat in also. There were so many people coming and going during my short time here. Jamaicans everywhere! Lol. Seems like they stay open late and start serving early in the morning. Love, love, loved it!!! Wish I could give this place more than a rating of 5 because the quality is off the charts!!!

Home cooking Jamaican style

As my husband and his family are Jamaican, getting " Real " Jamaican cooking generally means visiting family. That said the food here is very close to family cooking. We frequently go there to get a meal to tempt his 100 year old Grandma to eat. She enjoys the food we get there and she is a TRUE Jamaican. We can recommend the restaurant as a place to eat in or take out. You will not be disappointed.

Don't miss Dunn's River

What a great place! Awesome food, lively atmosphere, and so graciously hospitable. There is a continuous line for take out, but treat yourself to the service: place your order, grab a cola champagne from the fridge, and take a seat. Awesome curried goat, braised oxtail, jerk chicken, rice and beans, plantain and other side dishes. Watch out for the bottled hot sauce- it is the real deal.

Very enjoyable meal

On my business trip this past weekend decided to driver over to CT before coming back to DC to visit a friend. I stopped in this restaurant because I love a nice Caribbean meal and was happy I did. It's not a fancy place but not a dump either. Very casual dinning with a lot of locals coming in and regulars at that. The waitress was very pleasant and friendly which means a great deal to me. The food came and was hot and TASTY very well cooked food. I live in the DC area and have tried many so called Caribbean restaurants and most lack the true authentic flavors. I wish the places in my area cooked food that good. The food not only tasted delicious but the presentation of the food was beautiful. I don't eat a lot of rice and asked for more steamed veggies and it was not a problem to get a huge plate of nicely steamed cabbage and carrots all with a smile. The rice was very nice and not dried out like most serve here. I love to travel as well as eat and I will be back Dunns River ready for more yummy food!!!

The best Caribbean food around

Well, it is small and usually crowded, but if you want the best Caribbean food around, this is the place. We will drive clear across town to this gem of a place. A must try is the curry or the eschovich fish! Curry goat is my favorite of all Nothing better than to wash it down with real sorrel! This place is authentic and not watered down to suit most Americans and that is why I love. As an American I want authentic ethnic food and this is the place fore really good Caribbean food.
